New Zealand: South Island Encompassed
Great trip, highly recommend as a fun way to see the South Island.
- Sightseeing
Southern Voyager
This tour with Wild Kiwi went great. We had an awesome Tour Guide (Robbie),a very chill and organized guy, and all things went very smoothly. We did visit the best spots in the south island and had a huge amount of optional activities to choose from. It was a small group, and each person managed to choose their activities and still enjoy our time together in the visit and sightseeing beautiful New Zealand. Would definitely recommend.
New Zealand South Island Express
Great tour! We got to see so many places in such a short amount of time, and I had a great time. Made some friends during the whole time! Will be heading to see the North Island next year! I’m already looking forward to exploring! ????????
- In-depth Cultural
Great tour! Tom was great the first week and Robbie was great the second week! An amazing two weeks!
NZ Adventure South
Not too bad, just Nomad’s hostel was bad
NZ Adventure 17 Day
An absolutely amazing experience with the best group leader. We faced quite a few challenges during the South Island tour due to extreme weather, but Emily always went above and beyond to make sure we’d all still have the best experience possible. No matter what was thrown at us Emily was there to reassure us, adapt & improvise and make us laugh
- Hiking & Trekking
Queenstown Southern Loop
Although Rod, the driver was very nice I felt that Intrepid had not organised the tour as well as previous Intrepid tours I have done. It was very overpriced for what was provided. The van had a broken seat belt attachment with a sharp edge which ruined a down jacket I had bought for the trip. I have asked Intrepid about it but received no reply.
New Zealand Journey National Geographic Journeys
The trip fulfilled my expectations; a good introduction to New Zealand, including both North and South islands. The trip was very well organised; even an enforced change of itinerary was handled seamlessly.

NEW ZEALAND – 10 Days Highlights of North and South Islands
New Zealand and my itinerary was perfect! I had to be efficient since I only had 10 days and wanted to see both islands of NZ. The Highlights Tour put together by Bucket List Tours was exactly what I was hoping for and it exceeded my expectations. Before leaving the US, Bucket List Tours connected with me and made sure we were able to communicate throughout my trip via WhatsApp. And that was super helpful since there were a number of times where I was able to clarify logistical items on the itinerary to ensure such things as being at the right pickup locations for scheduled day tours. Bucket Lisr Tours was always very responsive and helped me do everything I had on my list for New Zealand. I would highly recommend Bucket List Tours to anyone and am already planning on using them again in the future!
New Zealand – South Island Multisport
Overall is good. The issue is that it was advertised for ages between 12+ to 99. This age group is definitely too broad. My husband and I are in our 70's, but the rest of the group (14) were between 30-50. Although we are outdoor individuals who can hike and cycle for several hours, we were definitely slower than our younger companions. Our interests during these activities re. history/fauna etc... were also not that of the other travelers. Our guide was caught between the needs to ensure safety of 2 separate groups which we felt was unfair to him. Otherwise, itinerary, guide's knowledge and organization were very good.
- Wine tasting
Ultimate South Island Adventure
Well organized trip with great guides that hit many of the highlights of the South Island, which deserves its reputation for awesome scenery. Active but not overly strenuous hiking.
What people love about New Zealand South Island Tours
Excellent tour. Definitely recommend
One of the best experiences of my life, made possible by the incredibly talented and charismatic Daisy! This was well organized with all of the logistics taken care of for you while having the freedom to pick what activities interest you most. The group setting was fun and a nice bonding expensive of people from around the world. Some of the hostel stays were great, some were just ok, but all were clean and had the essentials.
Great tour! We got to see so many places in such a short amount of time, and I had a great time. Made some friends during the whole time! Will be heading to see the North Island next year! I’m already looking forward to exploring! ??

6 Tips for Planning a 10-Day or 12-Day Trip to the South Island
- Allow an extra day or two for your trip to the South Island, so that you can include your travel time to and from your tour’s starting point, as well as allow yourself to get over the jet lag
- Pack light : don’t be the one with extra suitcases that everyone has to make room for! See our New Zealand Packing List for more packing tips.
- Use websites like TourRadar to compare tour companies and find the perfect fit for you. Another advantage to these websites is that they have standard cancellation policies should your plans change
- Decide on a few optional activities before your trip so you are able to budget correctly
- On a similar note, allow room in your budget for meals , if your tour does not include every meal – see How Much Does a Trip to New Zealand Cost? for the typical cost of food in New Zealand.
- Ask if your chosen tour company has a Facebook Group ! That way, you can connect with other travellers who will be on the same tour.

New Zealand South Island Hiking Tour itinerary Request full itinerary
Arrive independently in Blenheim, in the Marlborough wine country. Please arrive no later than 1:30 pm. (there is a flight from Auckland which arrives at 1:30 pm). We will meet you at the airport (whenever you arrive before 13:30) and transfer you to Picton harbour for a light lunch and then a boat transfer to beautiful Furneaux lodge. There is time for a swim or a short stroll along the coastal path before dinner on the terrace of the historic homestead building. There are many flights from Auckland and Christchurch to Blenheim. Overnight Furneaux Lodge in luxury waterfront suites. Endeavour Inlet. Airport transfer, overnight, and all meals included.
Today you begin the Queen Charlotte walking track, a relatively easy but long walk amongst the splendid bays and inlets of the Marlborough Sounds. The track is unique for its stunning coastal views, historical landmarks, and wonderful variety of native bush and birdlife. The terrain is undulating with hills ranging from sea level to 400 m (1,200 ft). Most of the track is wide and all major streams have been bridged. We begin our walk from Ship Cove, where Captain Cook rested and replenished during his three historic voyages to the South Pacific in the 1770s. Upon arrival at Furneaux Lodge, enjoy a cold drink on the terrace, or borrow a sea kayak for a paddle along Endeavour inlet. Walking Distance: 18 km (11 mi), about 4.5 - 5 hours of walking. We start the day with a short boat transfer to access the trailhead. 2nd night at Furneaux Lodge in luxury waterfront suites. Overnight and all meals included.
Exit the Queen Charlotte track via water taxi back to the mainland. Time for a "flat white" in Picton village before a 2-hour van transfer to Kaikoura. A beautiful 6 km (3.5 mi) walk along the coast allows us to stretch our legs before continuing along this super scenic stretch of coast which features the towering peaks of the Seaward Kaikoura range on one side and the shimmering blue waters of the Pacific on the other. We soon arrive at the Ngaroma Beach House, a simple but comfortable house located 20 m (60 ft) from the shore that was originally built as the farm's “Shearers Quarters.” We are now on a private farm track, created by two neighbouring "run-holders" to diversify their farm income. We are joined for dinner by Heather and Bruce, the owners of the Ngaroma farm. They are lovely hosts and they share with us some local lore about this isolated farm and their life here. Walking distance: 6 km (3.5 mi) for Kaikoura walk, and as many as you like along the beach. Overnight at the Ngaroma Beach House, a farm cottage with separate rooms but shared WC and shower facilities. Overnight and all meals included.
After a hearty farm-style breakfast we set off on today’s adventure. The “trail” starts along the beach and passes beneath cliffs embedded with 8,000-year-old tree stumps and fossils. You may see seals or dolphins playing in the surf, but chances are you will be too busy beachcombing as the sand reveals lots of natural treasures! Enjoy a picnic lunch at the Circle Shelter nestled amongst coastal bush before climbing up some high terraces for immense views up and down the uninhabited coast. The trail then turns inland and weaves its way through covenanted land that is returning to native bush and forest. Fantails and Bellbirds provide a natural soundtrack as we head for the Medina homestead where we spend the night. We will be joined by farm owners Sally and David who share many colourful stories about their 50+ plus years living a unique lifestyle on this land. We again enjoy a delicious home-cooked meal prepared with T.L.C by Sally and David’s daughter. Walking Distance: 13 km (8 mi). Overnight at Medina homestead featuring a charming 100-year-old all-wood "Shearers Quarters" and “Garden cottage.” Private rooms but shared WC and shower facilities. Overnight and all meals included.
Our day starts with a long but gradual climb up a ridge line through native forest and pine plantations. We emerge above the bush line and are rewarded with a spectacular view over rolling hills to the jagged peaks of the Seaward Kaikoura range. Stop for lunch at a hut perched high above the valley, and in some cases, above the soft, fluffy sea mist that burns away during the morning. A gradual descent brings us back to the Ngaroma beach hut where we rest and enjoy a glass of homemade lemonade before hopping into the van for a scenic two-hour transfer to Christchurch. Overnight in Sumner, Christchurch’s popular beach and surf area. We stay in a small contemporary four-star hotel that is in the heart of Sumner village and a 2-minute walk to the beach. Walking Distance : 11 km (7 mi). Four star hotel. Overnight and all meals included.
This morning we walk along Christchurch's spectacular crater rim walkway. True to its name, it follows the rim of the ancient and now extinct volcanic crater which gave birth to Banks Peninsula, an area of 1,150 square km (440 sq.mi.). We start with a short van ride to Lyttelton and leave the historic port on foot to climb 400 m (1,200 ft) for fabulous views of Christchurch city to the north and Whakaraupo Bay and Banks Peninsula to the south. Fantastic panoramas abound as we walk through open country to eventually descend the historic bridle path which in pioneer days connected Christchurch settlement with Lyttleton harbour. Lunch today is at Eruption Brewery, Lyttelton’s excellent craft brewery which also serves up tasty food on their rooftop terrace. After lunch, you have the choice of a gorgeous walk along the wild bluffs of Godley Head, or to return to Sumner and hit the beach. 2nd overnight at four star hotel in Sumner. Walking Distance: 12 km (8 mi) in the morning & 6 km (4 mi) in the afternoon. Hotel and all meals included.
This morning you have some free time to explore central Christchurch. We have developed a self-guided “urban hike” which hits the highlights of the city. You can enjoy the magnificent botanical gardens, peruse many of the excellent galleries, or chill out in one of Christchurch’s many cafés. After a lunch of your choice (not included) we leave Christchurch and head south to the "Mackenzie country," a unique environment of harsh winters, hot summers, and mountainous terrain which produces the finest Merino wool in the world. We arrive around 4 pm at the historic Grampians Station where we have permission to do a walk into the foothills around the farm. You are rewarded with incredible views of Mount Cook, New Zealand's highest mountain, and the snow-capped peaks of its adjacent rivals. We descend down to the shearers’ quarters to enjoy the sunset view and a cold drink with owner Eve Hope who will give you some insights into the challenges of running a 50,000 acre Merino sheep station. We stay tonight at nearby Tekapo settlement, a small community situated on the edge of a glacial lake where the Southern Alps provide a dramatic backdrop.
Tonight our accommodation is in a very comfortable five-bedroom and bathroom holiday home. Dinner is family style at the dining room table. After dinner it's time to look to the heavens because Tekapo is located in the heart of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. This 4,300 sq.km (1,660 sq.mi.) area is the southern hemisphere’s sole dark sky reserve and one of only eight in the world. Light pollution is strictly controlled to provide a unique and unforgettable star-gazing experience. Overnight Tekapo house. Walking distance : 8 km (5 mi) in the morning and 4 km (3 mi) in the afternoon. Drive time 3.5 hours. Overnight, breakfast, and dinner included. Lunch not included.
After breakfast head west towards the “Main Divide,” the imposing wall of mountains that runs north-south along the western edge of the South Island. We stop at a farm gate and start our walk along a 4x4 track that enters Braemar station. Permission has been granted to access this spectacular property that overlooks the emerald waters of Lake Pukaki. An hour and a half into the walk we are joined by owner Julia Mackenzie who tells us the fascinating history of the farm as well as the joys and challenges of “high country life.” Our hike finishes at the Braemar homestead where Julia invites us into her kitchen for a delicious home-cooked lunch. The nearby snow-capped peak of Mount Cook is visible from the kitchen window. The afternoon walk takes us along the edge of the braided Tasman river with magnificent views of Mount Cook and the Mueller glacier. Return to Tekapo for a second night at our comfortable home in the village.. Walking distance : 10 km (6 mi) in the morning and 6 km (4 mi) in the afternoon. Overnight and all meals included.
Say goodbye to the Mackenzie country as we head south along the celebrated scenic drive through the Lindis Pass to Queenstown. During the drive we will stop for a 45-minute easy walk along the edge of stunning Lake Pukaki. We stop for a delicious lunch near Arrowtown at Akarua winery. This afternoon you will experience an exhilarating jet-boat ride through the canyons of the Shotover River before checking into our four-star hotel in Queenstown. Enjoy a late afternoon walk along the shore of Lake Wakatipu to take in the views onto "The Remarkables," the aptly named mountain range that lines the eastern shore of the lake. Queenstown has been blessed with splendid natural beauty but it also features some of the best restaurants in New Zealand. Tonight is a free-night so you can dine where you please. There is much to choose from, including Michelin-starred chef Josh Emmet's "Rata" restaurant. Drive time: 3.5 – 4 hours. Overnight in Queenstown at four-star hotel. Hotel, breakfast, and lunch included. Dinner not included.
Today is chock-o-block with stunning scenery. This morning we take a high-wing propeller aircraft flight from Queenstown over the magnificent mountains, waterfalls, lakes, and fiords of Fiordland National Park. We land at the head of Milford Sound to board a launch to cruise the full length of the fjord to the base of Mitre peak, whose 1,683 m (5,551 ft) spire rises straight from the sea. Return to Queenstown by scenic flight over the world-famous Milford Track and Sutherland Falls. The excursion lasts 4 hours so we’ll be back in Queenstown in time for lunch followed by some free time, so you can choose to chill out by the lake, enjoy a spa treatment, or try a parachute jump, or a bungee jump, or white-water rafting! Your Customwalks guide will happily accompany you on a serene walk that skirts the turquoise waters of Lake Wakatipu and features the craggy peaks of the Remarkables range. Queenstown is not only famous for its scenery and adventure sports, but also for the excellent wines that come from the “Central Otago” wine-growing region. Before dinner you can visit an ingenious wine bar where you can sample some of the highest-rated Pinots on the planet. Tonight is another “free night” dinner in Queenstown. 2nd Overnight Queenstown in four-star hotel . Hotel, breakfast and lunch included. Dinner not included.
We have an early departure from Queenstown to access the start of the Routeburn Track, one of New Zealand's GREAT WALKS. The track passes through two national parks, Fiordland and Mount Aspiring, and is part of a UNESCO World Heritage area. You will be walking amongst mountainous peaks, sheer rock faces, alpine basins, pristine lakes, cascading waterfalls, luxuriant forest, and aquamarine rivers. The track is equipped with several huts and shelters but you will be staying both nights in luxury lodges where you can enjoy a hot shower, clean towels, crisp linen and a three-course meal, not to mention a cold beer at the end of the day. We will be joining other like-minded hikers on this route, and you will have an additional four guides to look after you on the trail. Today's hike starts with a climb up a wide path to Key Summit for a huge vista. Here you can sit among the alpine flora and gaze down upon three valleys from which water flows to three different coasts. You then descend to the Lake Howden hut for a hot drink and picnic lunch before gradually climbing through a lush silver beech forest to the base of Earland Falls. You will look over the Hollyford Valley to the ice-capped Darran Mountains before descending to the lodge at Lake Mackenzie. Morning bus transfer: 3 hours. Walking Distance 15 km (9 mi). Overnight Lake Mackenzie. Hotel and all meals included.
Wake up this morning to a chorus of native birds then enjoy a hearty breakfast before seting out for one of the most scenic alpine walks in the world. You leave the ancient forest draped in moss and lichen and enter the world of daisies, buttercups, gentians and edelweiss as you gain altitude. At the top of the pass, revel in a full vista of the Darran Mountains across the Hollyford Valley, which slices through Fiordland to the distant Tasman Sea at Martin's Bay. On a clear day you can see the white froth from the rollers breaking on the coast. Lunch is at Harris Saddle hut, where flush toilets are available (this is sophisticated hiking!) in addition to the awesome panorama. A gradual descent takes you into the upper basins of the Routeburn Valley with towering mountains above you. We sleep tonight at the beautifully located Routeburn Falls Lodge. Chances are you will get a visit from a Kia, the world's only Alpine Parrot, and surely the cheekiest too. Walking Distance: 15 km (9 mi). Overnight Routeburn Falls. Hotel and all meals included.
A leisurely and easy hike this morning leads us along the banks of an emerald green stream. The track continues to shadow the river as it roars through a magnificent gorge before plunging beneath the unyielding rocks at the Sump. From here it is a gentle walk through the beech forest to the Road End at Routeburn flats where the bus takes us to Glenorchy pub for a welcome drink before the 45-minute drive to Queenstown. We get back to Queenstown around mid-afternoon so you have time to relax and pack, or explore more of Queenstown village before dinner at Eckhardt’s Grill, one of Queenstown’s premier restaurants. Walking Distance: 10 km (6 mi). Overnight, and all meals included.
The tour has ended. Sorry! Many people choose to pick up a rental car in Queenstown to continue their explorations of the South Island, others spend an extra night in Queenstown, while others fly out today. There are regular flights from Queenstown to Christchurch, Auckland, Wellington, Sydney, and Melbourne. Your guide will help you make arrangements to get to the airport
On the last three days we walk the Routeburn Track, one of New Zealand’s “Great Walks,” and as such the government has invested in upgrading the trail to make it safe and well maintained. This allows people without mountaineering and bush skills to experience the beauty of this high alpine area. The government maintains four huts along the route for backpackers, and has also given concessions for two luxury lodges to be built along the track. This means you don’t have to carry food and bedding for three days of hiking. It also means you get a comfortable bed, clean linen and towels, a hot shower, and a three-course meal at the end of the day, even in this remote alpine setting.
Please note that there are rooms with en suite WC and shower available, which are the rooms that we book, but if you want to save a little money you can stay in a four-person room with shower and WC facilities around the corner. The en suite rooms sell out quickly, and are allotted on a "first come, first served" basis.
You have to carry with you your clothes for three days of hiking, and a picnic lunch which is provided each morning. Your daypack will thus be slightly heavier than what you are used to since you’ll have to carry a change of clothes and some flip flops or light shoes for post-hike relaxing and evening wear. The evening scene is very, very casual. During the Routeburn portion of the tour we will be joining other like-minded hikers on this route, and we will have an additional four guides to look after us on the trail.
Single Supplement: This is a bit complex. Read carefully! Single supplement: $750 USD The single supplement is for single occupancy in Furneaux Lodge (2 nights), Christchurch (2 nights), Tekapo (2 nights), and Queenstown (3 nights). If there are rooms available for single occupancy during the two nights during the Kaikoura farm track, you may also get single occupancy there, but you may have to share a twin room since there are only 5 rooms available in total. The Routeburn Track segment: Single rooms are very rarely available during the two nights on the Routeburn track. You can request a single room with private ensuite WC and shower, and if they are available a further $630 USD is required for those two nights. If a twin share is not available during the Routeburn section of the tour (if there isn't another single on the trip, for example) and we are unable to provide a twin room with ensuite WC and shower, you will share a quadruple room with WC and shower facilities down the corridor. If you are in a quadruple room you will receive a $250 USD discount on the single supplement. To recap: a) Base single supplement is $750 USD, single occupancy for 9 nights but with a twin share during the Routeburn Track (2 nights), and maybe a twin share during the Kaikoura Track (2 nights) b) Base single supplement $750 USD + Routeburn Track single occupancy room with ensuite WC and shower $630 USD = Total supplement $1,280, and you may have to share during the Kaikoura Track (2 nights) c) Base single supplement $750 USD minus discount of $250 USD if you opt for -- or are required to -- share a quadruple room during the Routeburn Track Segment = $400 USD single supplement including the discount for sharing a quadruple room on the Routeburn Track.
Activity Level 3 = Moderate: In general: This is a Moderate tour for fit hikers, and will be a little challenging but do-able for less fit hikers. Terrain : Rolling to hilly terrain with frequent climbs and descents, often over rocky terrain. May have some short, relatively steep climbs and descents. Actual walking time: between 2 - 5 hours per day, mostly in the morning but also in the afternoon. Distances: Usually between 8 - 12 km (5 - 7 mi). Max distance is 14 km (8 mi). Surfaces: Trails consist mainly of compact earth and/or gravel and sometimes gravel roads, with occasional rocky and uneven trails Footing: Good, but on occasion you have to pay attention to where and how you place your feet. Proper hiking shoes with thick soles with good treads are required. Sport sandals, running shoes and tennis shoes are not adequate. Specifics: We designed this trip to explore the best of the South Island. As a result, we have to spend more time than we usually like transfering by van. On some days we walk for a half-day and then have an afternoon transfer (the longest one is 3.5 hours). The first day has the longest hike (18 kms/11.5 miles) along good, wide trails on rolling coastal terrain, so it's not too demanding. The paths on the Routeburn track are good, but we'll be in the mountains so you should expect sustained climbs and descents, but never too difficult. Please see the supplemental information below about the Routeburn Track. Hiking Poles: Recommended but not required, but if you habitually use hiking poles then you will find them helpful Compared to the Cinque Terre: These tours are easier than the hikes in the Cinque Terre Other : This tour is appropriate for fit, first-time “hikers” who enjoy walking and who have good balance Moderate Tours: Tuscany Chianti, Dordogne Walk, Sicily Walk, Spain Andalusia, Lake Como Hike, and Corsica Hike
Getting There: the trip starts on February 15 (2021) with your independent arrival at our pre-booked hotel in Blenheim, which is well connected by air with Auckland, Christchurch, and Wellington. See this website for handy information on getting to New Zealand, with links to all airports and airlines.
Air: You can fly directly into the Woodbourne Airport, which is only 8 km from Blenheim. Air New Zealand has up to four flights a day from Auckland, eight flights from Wellington and three flights daily from Christchurch. See all flight schedules and shuttle booking at the airport’s website .
Getting Away at the End of the Trip: the trip ends after breakfast on Sunday February 28, 2021 in Queenstown. There are international flights between Queenstown and four Australian cities (Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast), operated by Air New Zealand, Jetstar, Qantas and Virgin Australia. Domestic flights are operated by Air New Zealand and Jetstar, linking Queenstown with Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. There are several flights a day to all of these destinations, so consult the airport’s website or your favorite airline for current schedules. If you book a trip with us you will receive detailed information about how to get to the start of your trip, or e-mail us with any specific travel questions.
What an incredible trip! The scenery was spectacular but the knowledgeable guides and the chance to share meals with locals made the experience that much more meaningful. The variety of hikes was impressive - I particularly enjoyed the alpine terrain around Mt Aspiring, although I won't easily forget walking along the stunning Kaikoura coast and exploring the fern forests in the Sounds via the Queen Charlotte track. Hat tip to the leaders for navigating and smoothly resolving unforeseen logistical challenges (two weather events and a vehicle malfunction). Five stars!
This hiking tour was incredible! No crowds, excellent walks, wonderful food, well planned, beautiful scenery, excellent local guides, wonderful people, quaint accommodations, good wine, beautiful skies. I would go again in a heart beat!
What an introduction to the South Island of New Zealand. Each part of the trip was unique and beautiful. We had a few schedule changes, but the changes were all wonderful. This trip had it all: tropical forests with unique tree ferns, fine dining, the alps, rustic lodges on sheep stations with locally grown lamb for dinner. We hiked in some of the most remote areas of the South Island. We also got to visit Christchurch and see the recovery since the 2011 earthquake.I can't say enough good things about our guides and dinner hosts. This was my second Customwalks hike and I can't wait for the next one!
I really enjoyed the local content that was part of the itinerary. This included day walks on isolated beaches with abundant wild life, including seals, and paths up into the high country on sheep stations, ending up back at the Shearers’ Quarters, where accommodation was adequate . On these days, dinner and breakfast were supplied by the landowner who joined us for meals, a glass of wine and contributed local knowledge. The Milford flight to and from Queenstown was definitely a highlight, and we ‘lucked out’ with the weather, which can be very unpredictable. The 3 days and 2 nights on the Routeburne Track were fabulous days, with stunning scenery, and an average degree of difficulty. The optional hikes were challenging! This experience highlighted how committed the NZ Government is to eradicating invasive species and protecting their parks. Restaurant choices were excellent, and the wines wonderful. Packed lunches were more than adequate. It was an excellent idea to take along a cooler, Esky, chilly bin. Accommodation overall was good. The van was comfortable and roomy, and no drives were more than 4 hours, with coffee and lunch stops in nifty little cafes along the way. All the guides were excellent company, well organized and able to rapidly adapt to a change in plans or weather. I would do it again in a heartbeat, and my heartbeat has been around for a few years.
This NZ walking tour was incredibly well planned to really see and appreciate a lot of NZ in just 12 days. I especially liked meeting the people who owned and operated the sheep stations that we stayed overnight and had dinner with, this was a very unique opportunity to learn more about NZ first hand from natives and gain access to some beautiful beaches to walk along. Our guides Bill and Brett were exceptional having extensive first hand knowledge of the places visited and their great company and sense of humor was key to spending so much time together. This is my third Customwalks walking tour and will not be my last, I like their style and plan to walk through my retirement with Customwalks! With regards to the NZ walk I really loved that we got to see the Milford Sound area by both air and sea, which was great as the tour only allowed for hiking the Routeburn Track in that region; so beautiful! I would definitely recommend this tour and others.
Wonderful trip in a lovely country! Especially enjoyed the visits with the sheep farmers and the incredible scenery everywhere. The Routeburn Trek was an experience not to be missed and so glad we did it. The hikes were very challenging though and as one of the oldest on the trip was glad to know my younger traveling mates were also challenged. We were blessed with good weather for the most part and company was fabulous as well as the guides. Much to remember and relish!
Beautiful Country. Especially like the Routeburn trek and visits to the home farms.
My first time in New Zealand--great introduction to a beautiful place. The trip included varied landscapes and hiking experiences including the Queen Charlotte Track, Kaikoura Coast Track, and the Routeburn Track and well as walks in farmland and areas where the native vegetation is being restored. Accommodations, food and logistics were excellent. A good hiking experience.
This trip provided a great overview of the South Island of New Zealand from the north to the south. The lush sub tropical rain forest of the Queen Charolette Track, the mountainous Roteburn Track, the Kaikoura Coast Track and the Grampians Sheep farm were all marvelous examples of the varied habitats in New Zealand. The hikes were moderate and within the abilities of those that enjoy hiking. Food was excellent, guides were knowledgeable and personable providing insight into the New Zealand way.

As a general rule, November to April are the most ideal months for travelling in New Zealand’s stunning outdoors. One of the most important things travellers need to know about the New Zealand climate is that it’s a maritime climate, as opposed to the continental climate typical of larger landmasses.
Thanks to its position in the path of the ‘Roaring 40s’ and mountainous terrain, New Zealand’s weather can frequently change with amazing rapidity. Because the weather can change so unexpectedly you should be prepared for sudden changes in temperature and weather conditions. This basically means having a good waterproof jacket and some warm clothing. You don’t need to bring your winter wardrobe but a good fleece/jumper and good thermals are a must.
The temperature during the South Island summers range from 10-30 ºC, with a pleasant 40- 50% humidity. Higher altitudes are always considerably cooler and snowfall is not uncommon even in summer. The Southern Alps act as a barrier to the moisture laden winds coming west across the Tasman Sea, creating a wet climate on the west side of the mountains and a drier climate on the east side. The geography also creates a wind pattern, which can in summer be very hot, dry and fierce. Maximum temperatures we may encounter range up to 30°C. Minimum temperatures expected in the Southern Alps in Summer time are around -5°C. Weather is an integral facet of any mountain range and getting to understand and work with this major environmental factor is what will make you more prepared for your tour – any questions about what to expect on your tour talk to one of our sales team.
New Zealand is +12 hours ahead of UTC/GMT
New Zealand has 3 official languages: English, Maori and New Zealand Sign Language.
New Zealand’s multi-ethnic society means that around 150 additional languages are spoken by different communities.
Maori language takes its roots from Eastern Polynesia, however, following settlement in New Zealand by Polynesian groups from the 13th century, Maori developed as a unique language distinct from other Polynesian languages. At the time of New Zealand’s 2013 Census, there were 148,395 Maori language speakers. Maori language is spoken mainly in the North Island, where the bulk of New Zealand’s Maori population resides.
New Zealand Dollar
There are opportunities to change money at banks during the tour or you may wish to change it when arriving at the airport.
In some of the rural areas that we visit there aren’t any banks and sometimes when there is a bank it could be shut when we arrive.
ATM machines are widespread throughout New Zealand, except when travelling through rural areas such as the West Coast.
Visa and Master card are the most widely accepted credit cards and we would recommend them for most expenses. American Express has limited use in NZ and it is only accepted in some centres.
A currency converter you may find helpful is www.xe.com.
International Dialing Code
Electricity in New Zealand is 230 Volts, at 50 hertz. The most common pin type is I. (Aust - 3 flat prong).

South Island, New Zealand
The Southern Alps are the backbone of New Zealand's South Island. The snow-capped mountain range features several glaciers and New Zealand’s highest peak - Aoraki-Mt Cook – along with dramatic alpine valleys that are home to the country’s best walking trails and ski fields. The Routeburn and Milford Track - two of New Zealand’s Great Walks - offer the best tramping in New Zealand in our view, showcasing the Fiordland and Mt Aspiring National Parks. Nearby, Queenstown and Wanaka are home to world-class ski resorts, Cardrona and the Remarkables. Heli experiences and expedition cruises into Milford Sound depart from Queenstown, Te Anau and Milford and are recommended inclusions on any bucket-list South Island itinerary. Many guests also visit the Marlborough region on their South Island journey to sample New Zealand's famous Sauvignon Blanc and hike the iconic Abel Tasman or Queen Charlotte Track. The diversity of natural landscapes on the South Island combined with the exceptional standard of its luxury lodges, makes it the ultimate adventure travel destination.

Straight Talk
We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
New Zealand's West Coast is a unique destination with a pristine lush green environment, thanks to its climate. Due to frequent rain it's sometimes called the Wet Coast, so make sure you pack rain gear!
In order to access the most scenic routes and significant points of interest on this trip, strategic shuttles are incorporated into several days of our itinerary. Most will be limited to an hour or so at a time, but on some days you can expect to spend a bit more time in the shuttle—though always to reach a worthwhile destination!
While our hotels are some of the finest in New Zealand, the relaxed Kiwi approach to service is reflected in the hotels on this trip—they are down-to-earth, without a lot of bells and whistles, and may not offer the level of customer service that you might be used to.

World Heritage Day-by-Day Itinerary
Christchurch Hike Arthurs Pass
Lunch Dinner
Day 1 – Arrive in Christchurch and Hike Arthur’s Pass National Park
After meeting your Trails guide and fellow travellers, we set off from Christchurch for the impressive Canterbury High Country. We’ll dust off any cobwebs with a refreshing but relaxed hike in beautiful Arthur’s Pass National Park, before continuing to the remote West Coast where we’ll stop in Punakaiki, home of the aptly named Pancake Rocks. After a delicious meal, you’ll spend the night in comfortable accommodation with the sound of crashing waves lulling you to sleep.
Hiking in Arthur’s Pass National Park
Breathe in the fresh mountain air as we stretch our legs in one of New Zealand’s incredibly scenic National Parks. The majestic Southern Alps run like a backbone down the South Island, dividing it east and west into two distinct regions, with Arthur’s Pass serving as its gateway. This afternoon we’ll follow a flowing river to its source, the cascading water of the dramatic Devils Punchbowl Falls. With views up to Mount Rolleston and the permanent glaciers that carve their way down the mountain faces, this hike is a perfect introduction to your small group walking tour and New Zealand's beauty.
Tonight we stay at Punakaiki Resort*
Punakaiki Hiking
Breakfast Lunch Dinner
Day 2 – Explore the Nile River and Hike Paparoa National Park
Today we’ll discover one of New Zealand’s most untouched areas. With its towering limestone cliffs and lush vegetation, this area feels like something straight out of Jurassic Park. Today we’ll hike a fantastic track through Paparoa National Park, as well as check out the blowholes and limestone formations of the Pancake Rocks. This afternoon you have the option to explore the national park further on the Cave Creek trail. Or if you’d prefer, take a relaxing stroll along Punakaiki Beach – be sure to keep an eye out for pods of Hectors dolphins playing in the waves!
Explore Paparoa National Park
Limestone and eons of time are responsible for most of Paparoa National Park’s impressive landscape. For thousands of years, water ran over the relatively soft rock forming a topography known as karst. Characterized by deep river canyons, sculpted mountain ridges and an extensive network of caves and sinkholes, Paparoa’s landscape is covered in a lush layer of thick green rainforest. We’ll hike on the Porarari Track this morning through Paparoa National Park, a visually rich area made up of dense sub-tropical forest and limestone cliff gorges. You’ll also have the chance to check out an interesting geographical phenomenon in the town of Punakaiki – the curious looking but aptly named Pancake Rocks. The surge of the incoming sea is forced into chambers creating a geyser-like explosion through rock blowholes. The unusual limestone formations, overlaid with soft mud and clay, have been forged over millions of years by the immense pressure of the sea, wind and rain, creating the pancake effect we see today.
Tonight we stay at Punakaiki Resort again*
West Coast Kayak Okarito Lagoon
Franz Josef
Day 3 – West Coast and Kayaking on Okarito Lagoon
It’s an enjoyable journey this morning as we travel down the coast to the tiny township of Okarito. Along the way, there’s panoramic views of the Southern Alps, virgin West Coast rainforest and rugged Tasman Sea coastline. Home to New Zealand’s largest coastal lagoon, the best way to appreciate Okarito is by kayak. Accompanied by specialist local guides, enjoy the majestic views and abundant birdlife. If you’d like to head out walking this afternoon, there’s a fantastic trail on our doorstep providing elevated views of the coastline. We’ll overnight in the nearby township of Franz Josef Glacier.
Guided Kayaking on Okarito Lagoon
Gliding across the waters of Okarito Lagoon in a kayak is undoubtedly the most peaceful way to enjoy this spectacular coastal wetland. Okarito is known for its outstanding population of birdlife, over 70 species of birds have been recorded here. The lagoon is a common feeding ground for kotuku (white heron) and royal spoonbill, both of which breed in the nearby Waitangiroto Nature Reserve. Quietly paddling around this tranquil waterway, with the mighty Southern Alps as our backdrop, you’ll have the best chance of observing the birdlife in their natural habitat, without disturbing them.
Tonight we stay at Scenic Hotel Franz Josef*
West Coast Glaciers & Southern Alps
Day 4 – Glacier Country & Mt Aspiring National Park
Keep your camera handy today to capture the picture-perfect views of Lake Matheson and Franz Josef Glacier’s terminal face, as we continue our Journey along the West Coast to our third National Park of the trip, Mount Aspiring. You’ll sleep soundly tonight in the relaxed lakeside town of Wanaka.
Lake Matheson Track
Today we'll walk on the Lake Matheson Track where you'll enjoy stunning views of Aoraki/Mt Cook and our towering Southern Alps. Renowned for its glassy still waters you'll enjoy spectacular mirror-like reflections across Lake Matheson as we make our way through native forest and learn about the fascinating glacial history of the area.
The Haast Pass, Mount Aspiring National Park and the Wanaka Lakes
As we make our way down the coast and inland, the stunning views continue. Once over the Haast Pass, the landscape changes dramatically as we head into the mountains. Linking the West Coast to Central Otago, this pass was used by early Maori on Pounamu (jade) gathering expeditions. We follow the Haast River into Mount Aspiring National Park and the Wanaka Lakes area to continue our luxury walking tour of New Zealand.
Tonight we stay at Edgewater Resort*
Wanaka Mou Waho Island
Day 5 – Lake Wanaka Boat Cruise and Hike in Mou Waho Island Wildlife Reserve
This morning we’ll cruise across picturesque Lake Wanaka to the tiny island wildlife sanctuary of Mou Waho. Guided by an experienced ecologist, we’ll explore one of the most magical spots on the South Island. In the afternoon we’ll take in more breath-taking views as we make our way over the Crown Range to the alpine resort town of Queenstown, where we’ll stay for the next three nights.
Lake Wanaka Cruise & Island Wildlife Walk
Close to the centre of Lake Wanaka is Mou Waho Island Nature Reserve, accessible by a 35-minute boat ride. Accompanied by our favourite eco warrior and long-time local guide, we’ll walk a well-formed track that gently climbs through native bush to the top of Tyrwhitt Peak. Just before the top we come to Arethusa Pool, a small lake on the island, with yet more islands in it – very intriguing. From our vantage point there’s a sweeping 360-degree view of Lake Wanaka and the surrounding mountains and valleys.
The Cardrona Valley and Queenstown
Our afternoon drive takes us through the Cardrona Valley and over the Crown Range, down into the Wakatipu Basin. Prepare to be wowed as we wind our way down the mountain road and towards the bustling hub of Queenstown on the shores of Lake Wakatipu.
Tonight we stay at Queenstown Ramada Central*
Glenorchy Hike Routeburn Track
Breakfast Lunch
Day 6 – Hike the famed Routeburn Track
This morning we travel to Glenorchy at the top of the lake following the shoreline road - a journey regularly voted one of the best drives in the world. And you can’t help but see why, the views are captivating. We have the whole day to wend our way on the Routeburn Track, one of New Zealand’s nine ‘Great Walks’. There are different options available depending on how far you’d like to hike. We’ll head back at the end of the day for our next night in Queenstown.
Hiking on the famous Routeburn Track
Today will be one of the hiking highlights of the trip, as we walk a section of the famous Routeburn Track. Once on the trail your guides will lead you through lush beech forest (Lord of the Rings fans might spot some familiar landscapes from the movies around here). The track meanders alongside the clear waters of the river and down into the meadows of Routeburn Flats – the perfect spot for a picnic lunch.
As with all our hikes, there’s lots of flexibility. If you want to push yourself and really get your pulse pumping, or you’d rather just enjoy a relaxed hike on the flat trail, there are options to suit. No matter what you decide, the views will be equally magnificent.
Tonight we stay at Queenstown Ramada Central again*
Queenstown Free day to explore
Day 7 – Explore Queenstown
Today you’ll be spoilt for choice in the ‘Adventure Capital of the World’, Queenstown. A world-class mountain resort nestled on the shores of the sleeping giant, Lake Wakatipu. The activity options here are endless; on land, water and even in the air – relaxing also permitted, of course!
There’s something for everyone, from adrenalin activities like bungy jumping and jet boat rides, to more gentle pursuits such as wine tasting, a round of golf or a spa treatment. Famous as a winter ski destination, Queenstown is equally magnificent in spring, summer and autumn. Today is yours to make the most of what Queenstown has to offer, your guides will be able to point you in the right direction to ensure you do. After a day spent soaking it all up, you’ll enjoy a third night in your Queenstown lakeside accommodation.
Fiordland National Park Hollyford Track
Martins Bay Lodge
Day 8 – Fiordland Experience: Scenic helicopter ride to Martins Bay, jetboat and explore Long Reef seal colony
Today is the day that you’ll forevermore recall the moment someone mentions New Zealand. Moody and dramatic, Milford Sound is simply stunning and offers what is surely the most spectacular fiord scenery in the southern hemisphere. We’ll start our morning with an extraordinary drive through diverse landscapes with incredible views. The Eglington Valley, our first glimpse of the Hollyford, the Divide and the Homer Tunnel are just some of the highlights on this journey. You'll get a chance to explore the Milford Sound foreshore before we are whisked away in a helicopter to Martins Bay.
Helicopter ride to Martins Lodge, jetboat and explore Long Reef seal colony
Flying over Milford Sound you’ll see massive vertical granite walls rising from the sea and waterfalls cascading either side as you fly into stunning Martins Bay for your exclusive group experience. We’ll then hike to the Long Reef seal colony where we can view the New Zealand fur seals at close quarters. If we are lucky, we may even catch a glimpse of the rare Fiordland crested penguin. Then we’ll jump onboard a jetboat for an exhilarating end to our day and a short ride to tonight’s exclusive accommodation nestled in the wilderness. On arrival, we’ll be greeted by our wonderful lodge hosts who will be preparing an incredible three-course meal for us to indulge in. After you dine, our host will tell you all about your serene surroundings and the exciting day ahead of you tomorrow.
Tonight we stay at Martins Bay Lodge*
Hollyford Track Hiking & Jetboat Ride
Day 9 – Fiordland Experience: Jetboat Lake McKerrow and hike the Hollyford Track
Regarded by many as New Zealand’s most beautiful wilderness valley, this is the perfect setting for another incredible walking experience. Our Fiordland Experience continues today with a jetboat across Lake McKerrow and up the Hollyford River before your expert Hollyford guide leads you off on your day’s hiking through the World Heritage beauty of the Hollyford Track.
Hiking on the Hollyford Track
The Hollyford Track is the only major track in Fiordland that is consistently at a low altitude, undulating gently through native forests, beside picturesque lakes and roaring waterfalls as we shadow the swift, clear waters of the Hollyford River. Naturally spectacular, this valley has an unparalleled diversity of vegetation and wildlife with 1,000-year-old giant rimu trees, ancient beech forest, intricate ferns, crimson southern rata, and emerald mosses and lichens of the under-story. Our private Hollyford Expert on hand to point out each precious piece of nature completely enriches the experience.
We’ll spend the day walking out of the valley along the beautiful Hollyford Track. This evening, we’ll return to civilisation, spending the night in Te Anau.
Doubtful Sound Cruise Doubtful Sound
Day 10 – Fiordland Experience: Doubtful Sound Cruise
Today we'll journey across Lake Manapouri, over the breathtaking Wilmot Pass and into the heart of Fiordland National Park. Spanning a staggering 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the head of the fiord to the Tasman Sea, Doubtful Sound is the deepest of New Zealand’s 14 fiords and one of the most spectacular.
Doubtful Sound Cruise
Doubtful Sound is known as Patea to the Maori people - meaning ‘place of silence’. On your nature cruise of the fiord, you'll find silence amongst a dramatic landscape with echoing birdsong or cascading waterfalls the only sound to break the stillness. With no road to the fiord, the experience of getting to Doubtful Sound is an adventure in itself. We'll firstly board a boat to cruise across the peaceful Lake Manapouri before crossing Wilmot Pass and descending into Doubtful Sound where we'll take our nature cruise. This is your chance to learn more about the unique Fiordland environment from your Doubtful Sound nature guide on board while enjoying the sights, sounds and wildlife of the fiord. This evening we'll retire to our hotel for some delicious kai (the Maori word for food) and a well-earned rest.
Tonight we stay at Distinction Te Anau*
Mackenzie Country Gibbston Valley
Mt Cook Village
Day 11 – Gibbston Valley, High Country Lakes, Aoraki/Mount Cook
After a relaxed start this morning, we'll make our way to the gorgeous mountain setting of Gibbston Valley, where we'll enjoy a selection of locally-produced wines and a leisurely lunch. This afternoon we’ll journey to the heart of the Southern Alps, Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, an area of vast snow-covered mountains and glacier-fed lakes. We’ll then stay the night in our most famous mountain hotel, the Hermitage at Mount Cook.
Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park
This National Park is truly a jewel in New Zealand’s crown. Named in honour of our highest peak, the majestic mountains tower above bright turquoise lakes surrounded by vast fields of golden tussock. With a settlement population of less than 100 people and building restrictions enforced, Aoraki/Mount Cook offers not only a feast for the eyes, but a rare tranquillity that soothes the soul.
Tonight we stay at The Hermitage Hotel*
Aoraki/Mount Cook Your choice
Mount Cook Village
Day 12 – Glacier Boat Tour and options in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park
The last full day on your New Zealand luxury walking tour will be one of the most unforgettable. Home to not only our highest and most sacred mountain, Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park boasts a further 19 peaks topping over 3000 metres. After a scenic glacier boat tour this morning, options this afternoon include hiking, exploring the village or a glacier heli-hike for truly mind-blowing views. Whichever option you choose you won’t be disappointed. After a full day of activities, we’ll meet up and return to the Hermitage Hotel for our final dinner together and a chance to trade stories from the day. Your last night of the trip will be a memorable evening as you look back on your adventure and the places you’ve travelled.
Glacier boat and Hiking in Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park
Some of New Zealand’s best alpine hikes are found here. Surrounded by the peaks where Edmund Hillary honed his mountaineering skills before successfully summiting Mount Everest with Tenzing Norgay in 1953, you’ll want to explore for yourself. Mount Cook, or Aoraki “the Cloud Piercer” as named by the Maori people, stands proudly at its heart raising up to the imposing height of 3724 metres (over 12,000 feet). The glacier boat cruise this morning takes us across the terminal lake to the ancient ice face of the Tasman Glacier, affording us incredible up-close views – keep your camera at the ready!
Tonight we stay at The Hermitage Hotel again*
Walk the Hooker Valley Track
This is one of the South Island's most popular trails in glacier country. When you look down from the impressive swing bridges down to the rushing river below that leads you all the way to an alpine lake complete with icebergs, you'll understand why. For flower lovers, the Hooker Valley is one of the best places to see Mount Cook lilies in season.
Free time around Mt Cook Village
Today is a great opportunity to explore on your own. Visit the museum and planetarium in the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre, take some short walks or just soak in the views with a coffee and a book.
Day 12 Optional Add-ons
Below are some of the optional add-ons you can also enjoy:
Glacier heli-hiking
Climb aboard a chopper and land high up on the Tasman Glacier, where you’ll don crampons and explore the dramatic ice caves and clear blue glacial shards with a specialist guide.
Mackenzie Country Lake Tekapo
Finish the trip in Christchurch
Day 13 – Tekapo and the Mackenzie Country, Depart Christchurch
Enjoy your final taste of the incredible Mackenzie Country scenery as we make our way back to the city of Christchurch. The unreal colours of Lakes Pukaki and Tekapo contrast against our highest peaks in the distance, creating the perfect backdrop for photos you’ll treasure in years to come. After 13 days of extraordinary experiences, adventures, friendship and fun, we’ll say our goodbyes with drop-offs at Christchurch airport or your city accommodation. You’ll leave feeling refreshed and satisfied in the knowledge that you’ve made the very most of your time in New Zealand.
*For logistical reasons, we may make small changes to our itineraries or accommodation from time to time.

Will I have WiFi or internet access throughout the trip?
Yes – we are well connected in New Zealand! You will have access to the internet, at your accommodation whether free or for a small fee, during 11 of your 12 nights on your World Heritage Trip. While New Zealand is quite tech savvy the wifi at some accommodation may not be of the speed you are used to back home. Due to its remote location, there is no internet connection or cellphone reception the night we stay at Martin's Bay Lodge in Fiordland. Your guides and lodge hosts will have a satellite phone to access outside assistance if they need to.
How far in advance should I book my World Heritage Walking Tour?
Due to the permits required to access the UNESCO World Heritage areas of New Zealand we have a limited number of World Heritage Walking Tour departures. It's normal for guests to book on our World Heritage Walking Tour 12 months in advance. To make planning your trip go as smoothly as possible we suggest you book your tour first, before you book any flights to New Zealand.
Tell me about your safety standards
Safety is always our top priority. We take great pride in our impeccable safety record and our safety management plans. Your Trip Director is a highly experienced outdoors professional who is first aid qualified and fully equipped with a satellite phone, personal locator beacon and first aid kit. Airfares to and from New Zealand. Airfares between the North and South Island of New Zealand if you are joining our Sweet North trip. Airport transfers. Travel insurance. Visas. Non-alcoholic or alcoholic beverages.
Why do you run the World Heritage Walking Tour in two different directions?
Our World Heritage Walking Tour is very popular and we often run two trips departing on the same date, with no more than 14 guests on any one trip. This trip has been carefully crafted to give you exclusive access to New Zealand's best walks, activities, and accommodations. By running one trip eastbound and the other westbound we are able to give every guest this exclusive experience. The published itinerary is the westbound trip, though it doesn't matter which direction you go as both trips start and finish in Christchurch and the itineraries are identical, they just run in opposite directions. If for any reason you would like to be on a particular departure direction then just let us know.
What kind of people will be on my World Heritage Walking Tour?
Our guests are like-minded people from Australia, the UK, Canada and America, and come from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. On average, we have a 50/50 split between men and women, with several single travellers on each trip as well as couples and friends travelling together.
If you would like to see the actual people that come on our World Heritage walking tour, check out our photo gallery .
Do I have to pay extra if I'm travelling by myself?
There is no additional charge for solo travellers on our trips. If you are a solo traveller, as many of our guests are, we will team you up with another solo traveller of the same sex to share with for the duration of your trip. If you would like to guarantee your own room as a solo traveller, then there is the option to pay a solo supplement.
Do you need any outdoors experience for the World Heritage Walking Tour?
You certainly don’t need any technical outdoors experience to enjoy your New Zealand Trails trip. If you enjoy being out and about in the outdoors and are a generally active person who enjoys hobbies like walking, cycling, golf, tennis or dancing then you will have no problems at all with the walks and activities on your trip.
The kayaking activity on your trip is suitable for beginners and is in a calm lagoon. There’s no need for you to have ever been kayaking before. You will be in double sea kayaks, which are very stable. A specialist kayak guide will teach you everything you need to know before you head out and will be with you out on the water.
How many people will be on my trip?
We run small-group tours, so along with your guides, there are typically 12-15 guests in your group. We have found keeping our group sizes small is the perfect way to make sure everyone has the best time.
Can you help with pre/post-trip accommodation and flights?
Yes, we can! Our dedicated Guest Services team member Becky will be here to help every step of the way. She can advise you on which flights you should book to ensure you arrive for your trip on time, the best accommodation for you pre and post-trip and everything in between. She’s here to make sure your travel experience is seamless and stress-free.
What does going on a guided trip entail?
Coming on a guided trip with us means we take care of everything! Our small group tours have a maximum of 14 guests per trip along with your local, New Zealand guide and are designed to make it easy, fun and safe for you to explore on your New Zealand trip of a lifetime.
Before your trip: You’ll have a dedicated guest service team member to assist you every step of the way. From advising what you should pack to choosing the best flights to arrive for your trip on time and helping organize pre and post-trip accommodation. No matter when you book or how far in advance you plan your travel, our team is here to help.
During your trip: On your trip, you’ll have a dedicated local New Zealand guide who will take care of everything. They provide food, snacks and safety information, as well as arrange all of your activities and make sure you get where you need to be safely and on time. They’ll also share their extensive knowledge of our country and culture and provide flexibility so you can enjoy New Zealand at the pace that’s right for you. Along the way, you'll also have specialised local guides that will join you for hikes and activities. These local guides add an extra depth of knowledge to the areas that we visit.
After your trip: Your dedicated guest service team member will be there to support you. From helping book accommodation and advising on the best flights to sharing local knowledge on other activities you might enjoy or the best places to eat. You’ll also receive all the photos from your trip that your guides have collected along the way so you can cherish the memories of your adventure.
How do we get around New Zealand? What happens with my luggage?
On day one of your trip, your guides will pick you up from either our joining hotel or the airport in a late-model Mercedes Benz Sprinter. This will be your vehicle for the duration of the trip and your luggage will travel with you in the luggage compartment. Each day we'll drive between 0.5 and 3 hours to reach our next destination. Our trips are carefully planned to give you the most time exploring the outdoors and any travel is always broken up with hikes, activities and coffee/bathroom breaks. You'll bring your small day pack with you inside the vehicle, with just your hiking essentials (jacket, water bottle, sun hat etc) and will be all you will need to carry with you when you are out exploring. Your luggage will stay in the vehicle until we reach our accommodation for the evening.
If you are joining us on both a Sweet North and a South Island trip, it is a very easy to transition between the South and North Islands. Our national airline Air New Zealand operates several flights a day between Auckland and Queenstown or Christchurch. We leave the flights for you to organise so that you can choose where you would like to spend any extra time between your trips and the time that suits your plans. If you have any questions about the timings for your trips, or you would like any help at all, just ask us!
