4 Day - Northern Lights, Snæfellsnes & Glacier Lagoon

Our first and second days were to tour West Coast and Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Our guide/driver was knowledgeable and took us to see all the points of interest. On the second morning, due to the weather condition we started at midday, he still got us to see every thing on the itinerary. On the first night we stayed late to look for northern lights until past midnight, the guide was with us the whole time checking on the forecast. Because of the not so perfect condition, we didn't see the lights after all. The second part was to the South Coast, Ice Cave, Skaftafell and Jokulsarlon Ice Lagoon. We had a different guide/driver. On his first day, we visited waterfalls, etc. and he managed taking us to Jokulsarlon Ice Lagoon to see the ice crystals on the beach. He announced that the Ice Cave tour was cancelled due to water in the cave and told us that we should request refund by the company. He said the next day, due to storm coming we had to leave the hotel by 7:30, going back straight to Reykjavik. That night when asked about chance to see northern lights, our tour guide said that he would pay attention to it until 11 before going to bed, but for any questions we could find him in his room before 11. He just pointed out a general direction for us but didn't tell us the exact location we should go to look for the lights. At 10:30 that night, we finally got to see the lights albeit a little late to catch the best part when we heard noise in the hallway and followed people from other tour groups to the right spot. Our impression was that our guide was not interested in helping us to view the northern lights although the northern lights were the main attraction for this particular tour and clearly the occurrence of the lights had been forecasted for the time. We understand that northern lights are natural phenomenon and we may not be able to see it on our tour but when there was forecast for it, our tour guide should really helping us to look for it or give us detailed direction for the exact location to view.

From Copenhagen to Helsinki Tour

From Copenhagen to Helsinki

We enjoyed the tour, overall. We considered it a taste of Scandinavia. There wasn't enough time in Oslo to experience it at all, and we were definitely rushed through other cities. But we knew this going in. The guides on the buses did n excellent job of providing information in a variety of languages. We really enjoyed the various tours on the water, from taking a cruise across a fjord, to the car ferry, to the overnight ferry on the Baltic Sea. The only drawback is that we were on a bus for many hours, many days, hardly anyone wore masks, and some people were coughing. In the end, I tested positive for COVID two nights before the trip ended, and my husband and I had to leave the tour and isolate ourselves in the hotel room. It ruined the rest of our vacation. I would urge Europamundo to be more careful about COVID and require masks on the bus.

Absolute North

We did see a LOT, but there was way too much bus time with not much time in the locations. Too many people on the bus and didn't really appreciate the tour being multilingual, we thought we were booking an English tour. Also didn't like having 3 different guides. Our last guide really didn't do much. But, again, we did see

Highlights of Scandinavia (12 Days)

Excellent experience, very good organization, the Director GORAN excellent person very concerned and very human, very nice hotels and excellent breakfast as well as dinners, the whole program was fulfilled, recommended 100%.

Scandinavia Explorer Tour

Scandinavia Explorer

This trip gives a wide range of experiences. Different countries: Norway, Sweden, Finland. Different types of transport: boat, ship, train, tram, bus, bike. Different types of location: cities, countryside, lakes, fjords. Different activities: historical tours, hiking, scenic tours, sampling local foods, bob sledding. Our guide Sigrid, from Norway, was outstanding. Very organised, spoke many languages, excellent knowledge of the areas we were exploring and so much more, good sense of humour, caring, joined in and shared her passion of Scandanavia. There were so many wow moments on this trip especially the amazing views. The sight of the Fjords and tyke snow capped mounds will live on in my memory forever. 5am amazing experience.

Grand Scandinavia (Classic, 20 Days)

A fantastic trip, our guide Greg and driver Zolton were exceptional. I have done many trips with Insight and as well as many, many with other companies but have to say Greg Colgin went out of his way making my trip one of the best ever. A very attentive Tour Director and attention to details the best. As for Zoltan this is the second trip I have travelled with him as driver, a driver I Trust and feel safe with and a man that goes out of his way to make our experience even better. A lovely clean coach each day with beautifully cleaned windows is always a plus. As for Insight I just love the roomy coaches with extra leg space.

A Taste of Scandinavia

Nikolai was FANTASTIC!!!! He was a great tour leader. The tour took us to many places and he educated us well. However, just a few negative comments. The hotels were not satisfactory ....I am used to better hotels when I travel. Carrying my luggage throughout the tour was very burdensome. I am an older person, and although I am in great shape, I did not want to be responsible for carrying my luggage everywhere. There was an 89 year old man on our trip. He had a real hard time catching up. I usually go on escorted tours where my luggage, and everything else, is handled by the guides, not by me. I loved the places that wer went to and overall I would suggest people take Tourradar and Intrepid if they don't mind doing some of the labor involved.

Copenhagen to Helsinki Tour

Copenhagen to Helsinki

I was disappointed the coach driver had to take 48 hours off the last two days of my trip because just when I was tired out I had to walk a lot and take public transportation.????

Scandinavia Highlights – Denmark Norway Sweden Finland

What people love about nordic / scandinavia tours.

Great tour, short but hit all the places that were on the initinery and the pick up from the hotel was very swift and easy. The guides for the 2 trips were friendly. I love how Mahlia (or Maria?) added her personal touch and stories to the pitch on the bus. I had a great trip in Iceland and want to come back again in different seasons.
I was worried about the culturally mixed tour clients due to some negative reviews from previous clients. But I enjoyed the experiences of mixing with participants from Mexico and the Philippines. Yes sometimes bilingual guides’ presentations were not clear, and I had to ask for clarifications. Hotels were better than I had expected from the reviews; except in one-hotel the lightening was so bd
Lovely places to see. Tour experience was great. We had wonderful times.

1. Which destinations can I explore with Nordic Visitor?

Nordic Visitor can plan your trip to the following countries in Europe:

  • •  Iceland
  • •  Scotland
  • •  Ireland
  • • The UK
  • •  Norway
  • • Switzerland
  • •  Sweden
  • •  Finland
  • •  Denmark
  • •  Greenland

We also offer Northern Europe packages in the following destinations:

  • •  Scandinavia – a group of countries, comprising Norway, Sweden and Denmark
  • • The Alps – visit Austria, Germany and Switzerland on an Alpine getaway
  • •  Lapland – a region spanning the northern reaches of Sweden and Finland
  • •  Svalbard – a remote Norwegian archipelago located in the Arctic Circle

2. What is the difference between Scandinavia and the Nordics?

The term "Scandinavia" commonly refers to Norway, Sweden and Denmark. " Nordic countries " is used definitively for Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland. This also includes their associated territories of: Svalbard, Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and the Åland Islands.

You may have guessed from our name that we originated as a Nordic travel agency. We now also specialise in Scotland and Ireland, two Celtic countries that are close to the Nordics.

3. Which Nordic country should I visit?

All of the Nordic countries are worth visiting at least once in your lifetime! Essentially, where to go in the Nordics depends on the sort of sights and experiences you’re looking for on your next getaway.

If it’s volcanoes and glaciers you seek, opt for a trip to Iceland. This island country will mesmerise you with its geysers, ice caves, black sand beaches, waterfalls, and so much more.

In Norway, the country with the longest coastline in Europe, you can expect a land of majestic mountains and fjords. Meanwhile, Denmark flaunts one of the world’s coolest capitals, Copenhagen, awash with cobblestone streets and first-class restaurants.

As for Sweden, you could soak up trendy cities, picturesque countryside and sandy beaches in the south of the country. Or head north during the winter months to experience the snow-laden scenery of Lapland, a region that Sweden shares with Finland.

For a Nordic aurora borealis tour , the top places to go are Iceland, Northern Norway, Lapland, and Svalbard. They are all located within or very close to the Arctic Circle, near the North Pole, where northern lights activity occurs. Here you have the best chances of witnessing this natural phenomenon in the Nordics.

Read this guide to the Nordic countries to help you choose where to visit.

4. How do you travel between Nordic countries?

As the Nordics are neighbouring countries, situated in Northern Europe, you can travel easily between them.

The Scandinavian nations, in particular, are very well connected with rail, road, sea and air links. You could drive, fly or take the train between Sweden, Denmark and Norway, and travel by ferry between the latter two countries. There’s also a Baltic cruise connection between Helsinki, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden.

Iceland, on the other hand, is located further away from the other Nordic nations. So if you want to explore Scandinavia and Iceland on a Nordic combination trip , the most convenient way to travel between them is by flying. The flight time from Bergen, Norway to Reykjavík, Iceland is 2 hours 15 minutes.

5. What is the best month to visit the Nordics?

The best month to explore the Nordics varies based on what you want to see and do. As these countries are located in the Northern Hemisphere, summer is from April to September, and winter is between October and March. Each season has its own appeal and reasons to visit.

For mild temperatures, long daylight hours, and green scenery, opt for a summer tour in the Nordics . This time of year is best for enjoying the outdoors and activities like hiking. Plus, if you travel to the northernmost parts of the Nordics, you’ll witness the midnight sun phenomenon.

The months of June, July and August are the most popular, as it’s when you get the best weather and summer holidays. April, May and September make up the “shoulder season”, and it’s an ideal time to travel in the Nordics if you’d prefer to be around fewer visitors.

A winter Nordic tour , on the other hand, offers different kinds of experiences. Think landscapes draped in frost, activities in the snow, and festive vibes. What’s more, as the night skies are darker for longer in winter, you have better chances of seeing the northern lights.

9. Why use Nordic Visitor instead of booking everything myself?

At Nordic Visitor, we’ll save you time and effort by planning your getaway for you, based on your needs and requests.

When you arrange your trip yourself, you have to carry out all the research and book all parts of your tour separately. If you need to make changes to your itinerary, you have to do all the legwork yourself.

Nordic Visitor takes care of everything on your behalf, based on your needs and requests, so you can relax and look forward to your trip.

Our travel experts will design your route, planned in a way that’s both comfortable and convenient. For example, they’ll ensure you don’t cover the same stretch of road twice unnecessarily. They’ll also book you into high-quality accommodation, and share all their insider tips with you.

This means you can leave all the hassle of trip-planning to the experts, who are based in Iceland, Scotland and Sweden. They know our destinations inside out, so you can rely on them to incorporate the best sights and hidden gems that you wouldn’t otherwise know about.

What’s more, you get access to our 24/7 helpline during your trip. Should you need any support, we are only a call away. And if you need to make changes to your itinerary for any reason, you can leave all of that to us as well.

We understand the importance of having a clean, comfortable and friendly place to lay your head after an exciting day of exploring. To ensure you get the best experience, we use our in-depth local knowledge to handpick the most suitable accommodation for you.

The hotels and guesthouses we feature in our tours are all highly rated by visitors. Our local experts have carefully selected each accommodation partner for their exceptional standards of quality, location and character.

As we have regional offices across the destinations we specialise in, we have close connections with our suppliers and we visit them regularly. This is why we are confident that the accommodation on your trip with us will meet or even exceed your expectations.

11. Will Nordic Visitor customise my tour?

Yes, you can easily customise your tour online. Add extra nights, upgrades and day trips to your liking as you go through the booking steps. If you’d like to make your itinerary more bespoke, don’t hesitate to speak to your dedicated travel consultant.

They will gladly tailor your tour to suit your tastes and preferences. You may have particular interests in mind, such as northern lights, hiking, photography or history. Perhaps there are certain places that hold special significance to you.

If you’re travelling to Europe with kids , your personal consultant will make sure every part of your itinerary is suitable for the whole family. Or if you’re on a honeymoon or anniversary trip in Europe , they’ll happily add romantic touches to make your couples break extra special.

Most of our travel styles are flexible. But bear in mind that small group packages are a little different, as you are on a fixed itinerary for the duration of the guided tour. However, you can add extra nights to the beginning or end of your trip.

12. Can I choose the arrival date?

You can choose from a wide range of arrival dates depending on the package and season you are interested in. All of our tours are available to purchase online, so pick the best date for you from the availability calendar.

If your travel plans have changed and you want to amend your arrival date, contact your travel consultant to rearrange your booking.

13. Will Nordic Visitor book my flights?

Return flights to your destination are not included in our packages. This gives you greater flexibility and allows you to save money by using your airline miles or taking advantage of airfare sales.

14. When should I book my flight tickets?

We’d advise that you look over flights for timings and dates, but hold off purchasing until you’ve booked your preferred tour. Once you’ve had a confirmation email from your personal travel consultant, you should then choose and pay for your flights.

Nordic Visitor packages come with daily itineraries and all of your accommodation organised for you. So once you have all of the arrangements confirmed, you can make an informed choice on your flight times. If you have any questions, you can always contact your consultant for advice.

15. What should I pack for my trip?

During your time in Northern Europe, you’ll be discovering new cities, towns and countryside. And with time spent outdoors, it’s best to be prepared for all kinds of weather.

Here’s our recommended packing list for visiting Northern Europe:

It’s good to know that when you choose Nordic Visitor, you can Book With Confidence , safe in the knowledge that your payments are protected. If you want to know more about our processes and payment details, check out our booking terms and FAQs .

1. Is it safe to travel to Iceland?

Iceland is a very safe place to visit. You’ll find it’s a peaceful country with one of the lowest crime rates in the world. And it’s good to know that Iceland has excellent, modern healthcare services.

As you may already know, Iceland does have active volcanoes but eruptions occur once every 4 years on average. There’s also minor seismic activity on the island, but noticeable earthquakes are rare and the Icelandic Met Office keeps a good eye on these.

Your dedicated, Iceland-based travel consultant will stay on top of these matters, as well as changing weather reports, to keep you safe on your journey. Don’t hesitate to ask the locals for directions or advice either, as Icelanders are used to travellers and tend to be helpful.

For the latest visitor guidance, you can check this Iceland travel update or read our blog: Is Iceland safe to visit ?

2. What language do people speak in Iceland?

Icelandic is the official language of Iceland . It derives from a North Germanic language similar to Old Norse that has changed little since the Viking times. You’ll get by very easily with English in Iceland though, as most locals speak it. Many are multilingual in other Nordic or European languages as well.

If you want to learn some local lingo, then here are some basic words and phrases to practise:

  • Já = Yes
  • Góðan daginn / Góðan dag = Good day
  • Gott kvöld = Good evening
  • Hæ / Halló = Hi / Hello
  • Bless = Goodbye
  • Takk = Thank you

3. What is the best time of year to go to Iceland?

The best time to visit Iceland depends on the attractions, regions and activities you want to experience.

For instance, you’ll have milder temperatures and longer daylight hours in the summer compared to the winter, which means more opportunities to explore.

With better weather, you can access remote regions – like the Westfjords and central highlands – between May and September. The mountain roads here close in winter as driving conditions are too difficult.

This makes Iceland summer tours ideal if you’d like to spend lots of time outdoors, discovering the island’s many natural wonders. It’s also the best time to see wildlife, like puffins and whales, and to enjoy activities like hiking.

On the other hand, if you’re keen to chase the northern lights, you’ll have a better chance of seeing them if you visit Iceland in winter . The reason is that the nights are long between October and April, so you’ll have more hours of darkness to spot the colours of the aurora.

Time your Iceland trip for the winter months, and you’ll also get to soak up landscapes draped in frost and snow. You may wish to discover Iceland at Christmas or New Year to revel in the festive atmosphere.

For more advice on when to go, check out these guides:

  • Best time to visit Iceland
  • Iceland in summer
  • Iceland in winter

4. When and where can you see the northern lights in Iceland?

The best time to take a northern lights tour in Iceland is during the winter season, between October and April. At this time of year, you have a higher chance of spotting the aurora borealis because the nights are dark enough to see the lights shine and flicker.

For the best chance of viewing the aurora borealis, visit secluded areas away from the light pollution of towns and cities. The darker conditions will allow you to make out the colours of the northern lights more vividly.

Read these guides for more information about the aurora borealis:

  • What are the northern lights?
  • How to see the aurora borealis
  • Best times and places to see the northern lights in Iceland

5. How many days do I need to visit Iceland?

There is so much to see and do in Iceland that you should decide your trip duration according to how many days or weeks you have to spare.

For a short break in Iceland, your best bet is to explore Reykjavík and the surroundings. Within 4 days you could visit the capital’s many museums, shops, galleries and restaurants. There are thermal pools to swim in and festive markets at Christmastime.

You could also see top sights like Gullfoss waterfall, Þingvellir National Park, and the Geysir geothermal area, which includes the hot spring Strokkur. These are all part of the Golden Circle driving route in the south. You can experience the Golden Circle on a day trip from the capital, or over the course of a few days.

Or extend your itinerary and see more of South Iceland . In 7 days you’d get to visit black sand beaches, glaciers, and other breathtaking natural attractions that Iceland’s south coast is known for. Don’t miss the chance to bathe in the mineral-rich waters of the Blue Lagoon, an inviting geothermal pool.

Another great option is to visit West Iceland . Enjoy a northern lights adventure in the remote Westfjords, or head to the Snæfellsnes peninsula.

Called “Iceland in miniature”, the Snæfellsnes peninsula is just 90 kilometres (56 miles) long and has a bit of everything. Discover volcanoes, lava fields, waterfalls, hot springs and fishing villages here.

If you have between 10 days and 2 weeks to spare, then you’ll get to see the many beautiful corners of Iceland. As well as the southern and western regions, you can explore East Iceland and visit North Iceland too by travelling the country’s Ring Road.

Venture east to admire fjords and gaze upon the mighty Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, where icebergs float on the blue waters. Continue north to Akureyri and the Lake Mývatn area to marvel at the Krafla volcano, mud pools and craters. You can warm up with a dip in the Mývatn Nature Baths.

Essentially, the more days you have to spend in Iceland then the more you will get to experience. In winter you’ll also increase your chances of spotting the northern lights!

Check out our blog for inspiration on how many days to spend in Iceland .

6. What are the best things to do in Iceland?

Iceland may be small, but it packs a punch with its wild scenery, intriguing culture and mind-boggling natural wonders. Here are some of the top things to do in Iceland :

  • Marvel at waterfalls
  • Hike in national parks
  • Dip in hot springs and pools
  • Hunt for the northern lights
  • Walk along black sand beaches
  • Taste Icelandic cuisine
  • Admire glacier lagoons
  • Venture into ice caves or lava tunnels
  • Learn about Icelandic legends
  • Look for whales and puffins
  • See geothermal wonders and volcanoes
  • Go horse riding

Read more on our blog about the best Iceland tours to add to your itinerary .

7. What’s the best way to travel in Iceland?

The best way to explore Iceland depends on what you wish to do and how flexible you’d like the tours to be.

Iceland self-drive packages are ideal if you want to set the pace and travel independently. On a road trip, you can take your time discovering top sights and explore off the beaten track. You also have more flexible timings and the freedom to go further afield for excursions and restaurants.

Another excellent way to travel is with a knowledgeable guide and a small group of fellow travellers. Nordic Visitor’s escorted group tours of Iceland give you the opportunity to learn from a local. They’ll take you to each attraction and share their knowledge and favourite spots.

Nordic Visitor only organises small minibus tours with a maximum of 16 people. This ensures you have a more relaxed and personal experience compared to large coach trips. This is a popular choice for our many solo guests and for those who don’t feel comfortable driving.

If you want something exclusive and would prefer to travel alone or with friends or family members, then choose from our privately guided tours of Iceland . You’ll have a local guide all to yourselves for a more personal experience.

Or you could pick an Iceland multi-day package : a city stay with quality-tested accommodation and activities arranged each day. You’ll get to enjoy guided excursions with local experts, but then have free days to explore on your own.

If you want more information, contact our Iceland team and they will help you decide which travel style would suit you best.

8. Who are Nordic Visitor’s Iceland travel experts?

Nordic Visitor is proud to be a local tour operator in Iceland. Reykjavík – the capital city – is where we are headquartered, and it is where the company was founded in 2002. Our Iceland travel agents are based here and have extensively explored the country.

You’ll be assigned a dedicated travel consultant who will use their in-depth knowledge to arrange your Iceland tour for you. They’ll share personal recommendations and can customise your itinerary to match your particular interests.

We recommend that you check flights for timings and dates, but do not purchase them until you’ve booked your Nordic Visitor tour.

18. What to pack for Iceland?

Due to its northerly location, Iceland’s climate is cool. And as you’ll probably want to spend time outdoors on your trip, it’s best to be prepared for all kinds of weather.

Here’s our recommended packing list for Iceland :

  • Walking boots or shoes with good grip
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Insulated jacket
  • Woollen or fleece jumpers
  • Thermal base layers
  • Warm hat, scarf and gloves
  • Warm hiking socks
  • Quick-drying travel towel

You can read more about what to wear in Iceland on our experts’ blog.

I have been searching on line for train tickets for russia, mongolia etc and have come across a website for a company called Nordic Travel. They are offering good rates for train tickets and I am wondering if anyone has done business with them before. I am nervous about faxing forms with my credit card details to unknown travel agents.

nordic travel group

A close friend to me has done business with them, and as far as I am concerned they are very serious. He used them for travel tours to Karelia to see this former swedish-finnish area.

Thank you Baggen for your quick reply. I have heard so many stories about rip offs in Russia that I have become wary but I am pleased to hear that someone has had good dealings with them.

Hello, we are looking to book with Nordic Travel too and wondered if you did book with them in the end? If so, how did it go?

Moscow Travel Group Meeting

Our meeting day is almost here! This Saturday, 20 April, we'll be meeting at One World Cafe, 533 South Main Street, Moscow from 10:30-1:00. We meet in the "back room" and have RS maps, guide books and other travel goodies spread out on the table. Bring your travel stories, travel questions and handy travel tips! If you're interested in travel, you're welcome! And the million Euro question is, "who's coming?"

S & M will be there.

I am iffy...Saturday is Troy Clean-up Day and the guys from the Fire Dept will come around and collect stuff for a dump run for a donation. (Well worth it!) Not sure what time they will be by, but we've got stuff from Mom and Dad's that needs hauling away. Hopefully they will come around early! We will miss May's meeting because we will be doing the RS Heart of Italy! Yea!!

I'll have to call the Fire Dept to ask them to get to your place early, Pam! We'll want to hear more about your upcoming RS tour. Will Rog and Cinda be tied up with the Fire Dept too? Glad Monte and Sharon will be there. Anyone else?

I think Hedy will be there.

Maybe Sharon and I could tell about how much fun it is to drive across the Great Basin for the umpteenth time, where to stay, what to eat, how to stay awake.

So everyone should get large coffees? I am thirsty already.

That's Hedley ;-)

@ Eileen, no, she's not Hedley Lamarr but our very own Hedy Lamarr! @ Pam, but if everyone has large coffees and is super-hyper, I won't be able to get a word in edge-wise. We also have to be out of the "back room" before dark!

I was hoping Monte would bring maps of the Great Basin to show us where to stop and where to eat. I think we have about determined we can put the stuff curbside and leave it and make the donation to the Fire Dept later. If it stops raining, I'll pull it out this afternoon. I had another bad dream about packing...dreamed I spilled coffee on the white shirt I was taking and had to run a bleach wash at the last minute before I could pack. I will wear a dark shirt to tomorrow's meeting because it seems like there will be a lot of coffee around!

Just don't eat the beans....

Nigel, PLEASE, this isn't California. We excercise some restraint!

Yes, Pam, you will need to wear a dark shirt! I've heard that there's a lot of spilling going on in the neighborhood of our back room! Maybe we should all bring a change of clothes in our day packs. See you there!

I'll be wearing new travel pants. If anything gets spilled on them I'll just hang them up to dry. Its supposed to take less than an hour.
