Review | OMS IQ Lite CB Signature wing
1 October 2018 6 minutes
By Mark 'Crowley' Russell
OMS has been a mainstay of the technical diving arena for a long time, producing robust and sturdy gear designed for the hardcore diving of deep wrecks and caves that recreational divers fear to – and will probably never – tread.
As a result, brands like OMS hover on the periphery of the recreational diver’s awareness. Many don’t recognise the name at all, and those that do might dismiss it as complicated and slightly mysterious equipment for dedicated technical divers only. Which I think is a bit of a shame. From a business perspective, recreational diving vastly outweighs tech in terms of numbers, yet it remains largely untapped by technical manufacturers.
The debate between rec versus tech will continue long after the cows have come home, binge-watched all of Netflix and gone to bed. In the last decade or so, however, there have been some serious attempts to bridge the gap which, much as I’m not a techie, I think is a good thing.
Hybrid BCDs, rear-inflation jackets with minimal – or no – bladder presence at the sides have become more commonplace. There have also been some ‘hybrids’ approaching from the other direction: wings that are pre-packaged with harnesses and some of the creature comforts – integrated weight pouches, for example – that recreational divers appreciate. As the recreational world dips its toes into tech, so tech manufacturers are dabbling in gear that recreational divers will enjoy.
The IQ Lite is just such a product. It has a harness that won’t frustrate novices who’ve just finished their entry level course in a jacket-style BCD, a doughnut-style wing of a size which doesn’t make you feel like you’re dangling from an inverted RIB, an integrated quick-release weight system and padded cummerbund, all in a well-designed and aesthetically pleasing piece of kit.
OMS IQ Lite first impressions
When I first received the IQ Lite, I did exactly what it said on the tin and put it on straight out of the bag. The fit was excellent, with minimal fiddling and – being a regular jacket-wearing recreational diver – I felt quite at home.
The IQ Lite has a standard Velcro cummerbund, which I like. Partly because I’m rather soft around the middle and partly just because I like them – because I’m a jacket-wearing recreational diver. All the clips are standard pinch-clips and the crotch strap – which isn’t really necessary for a comfortable fit, but very useful – was easily adjustable while wearing the BCD, rather than having to repeatedly doff and don the wing while fiddling in between. It has a very well apportioned ring at the front which became the designated holder of my camera’s lanyard. There are four, very solid D-rings available for clipping, one on each shoulder and one on each of the integrated weight pockets.
Fixing it to a tank was as straightforward as any other BCD. There are two tank straps with very solid rubber anti-slip pads and tank stabilizers built into the rear. The cam bands did rotate a little as I tightened everything up, but then I just rotated them straight back out again.
Donning the whole setup was as easy as could be, with the easy-to-adjust straps and the soft, padded backpack making the whole thing very, very comfortable indeed. The Performance Mono Wing (available in 12.5kg or 14.5kg lift sizes) with which the harness is packaged as standard is compact and unobtrusive.
I have always had reservations about integrated weights. I don’t like them in jacket style BCDs, mostly because I find that the weight is postioned too far away from my body, and also because they fall out. Without the extra padding of the bladder at the sides, however, ‘hybrid’ designs effectively place the weights on the sides of the belly strap. This is the case with the IQ Lite, and I found the body proximity much more agreeable as a result.
I wasn’t sure about the merits of weight pockets with the opening at the bottom. Not really from a safety perspective, since the weights would be most likely to fall out before you jump, or just after you land in the water. This would be more of an inconvenience rather than dangerous, but my feet were a little nervous. The IQ Lite’s pockets, however, are very secure. So secure that when I first tried to pull them out, I thought they might be stuck. A short, sharp tug pulled them free with ease, and once they were filled with lead and back in place, I no longer had any concerns that they would break free. Pulling them out and replacing them underwater took little effort. They are fairly small but will easily hold a 2kg block each, possibly 3kg if it’s a single piece of lead, although I would stop at 2kg.
In the water
At the surface, face-planting is somewhat inevitable when fully inflated (I did a lot of inflating and face-planting to check), but since that’s fairly normal for wings (and a lot of jackets), it’s nothing that can’t be fixed by a bit of deflation and leaning back. Those with less diving experience – and none with wings – should spend some time practicing, but that’s standard, basic advice for potential customers, rather than any issue with the product itself.
The inflator/deflator mechanism is excellent. It is solid, precise and positive. I was less happy with the dump valve at the end of the corrugated hose, however. Possibly because there is a lot of movement at the top of the wing between pulling on the hose and it actually operating. I tugged a few times at the surface and then switched to the deflator. The dump works fine, eventually, but nothing beats a corded shoulder dump.
I do have an issue with the kidney dump valve, of which there is only one, located on the left-hand side. It works perfectly well, but I think all BCDs should have at least one dump valve on either side. I know that techies prefer a left-hand rear dump valve, but I think that there is an important reason why BCDs targeted at recreational divers should have one on the right.
In the short-hose recreational world, in an out-of-air situation and diving with a standard recreational setup, the octopus comes over your right shoulder when you donate to the out-of-air diver. Ascent is a standard ‘look up, raise hose, deflate and swim up’, while holding on to each other.
If, however, you have to move through the water horizontally to a safe exit point, the out-of-air diver (who might also be somewhat panicked) is on your left-hand side, and standard practice is to hold on to their tank valve with your left hand. This doesn’t completely eliminate the possibility of the donor diver using a left-sided kidney dump, and of course it’s also possible to dump with the deflator hose using your right hand, but it is far, far easier to dump air, if necessary, using a right-hand-side dump valve (my preference is for the kidney). This also removes the possibility of dislodging the octopus as you reach for the deflator hose.
The argument about long hose primaries and bungees is another debate that will keep the cows awake long after they’ve come home, but the point is moot. Without a monumental paradigm shift in the recreational world, that’s how it is. It is my considered opinion, after having dealt with this situation both for real and for training purposes, that there should be a means of rapidly dumping air, top or bottom, on both sides of a buoyancy control device.
Now that I’ve said my piece, everything else about the IQ Lite underwater is top-notch. Thanks to the padding of the backpack and harness it is very comfortable in the water, and there is very little movement in different positions.
I am a three-dimensional diver and I spend a lot of time upside down. Partly because it’s a super useful position for taking photographs without lying in the coral, but mostly just because I like being upside down. There was no slipping of harness and tank, and when I could be bothered to be horizontal for a while, the classic wing design kept everything in trim, with the exception of my hair.
The IQ-Lite is a fine piece of apparatus. It’s made by a tech-oriented manufacturer but as I mentioned in the introduction, even novice recreational divers will feel at home wearing it. I think dedicated techies will be looking at something a little more technically dedicated, but I think it would be an excellent choice for recreational divers who might fancy a bit of limited tech on the side (and possibly vice versa). At just over 3kg in dry weight with small-profile packing, it’s an excellent choice for travellers.
Price-wise I think it’s a little expensive, but I don’t think it’s overpriced, if that makes sense. I made 18 dives over six days and – with the exception of the lack of a right-rear dump valve – I really enjoyed wearing it. I would highly recommend that divers who may not be familiar with the OMS brand at least try one on for size.

The best selection of oms diving equipment.
The OMS Deep Ocean Wing 2.0 has internal retraction bands. The retraction straps (tension straps) can be adjusted so that buoyancy of 22.2 kg - 27.2 kg can be generated. Thus, the OMS Wingbladder 2.0 is suitable for diving from mono and double bottles.
The OMS Deep Ocean Wing 2.0 is a wing that can be used for almost all configurations. The corrugated tube can be used on the right or left. There are also three quick drains (1x above and 2x below) on the wing.
The outer bladder of the wing is made of 1000 denier nylon on the outside and a TPU-laminated liner on the inside to prevent punctures, cracks or damage from salt water or chlorine. The inner bladder is made of polyurethane material and the seams are ultrasonically welded. The water drainage spouts at the bottom of the wing are reinforced with a second material ring.
- Internal bungees provide volumes from 22.2 kg to 27.2 kg
- OMS Deep Ocean 2.0 in donut style
- 3 quick drains (1x above and 2x below)
- Material: Outside 1000 denier nylon, inside polyurethane
- Ultrasonic welded seams - very robust and durable
- Can be used with single bottles and double tanks

Just to let you know OMS has redesigned there single tank wings they're now a full oval wing. They look very nice and have little tacoing
Captain CaveMan
dive rite also makes a nice travel wing called venture wing. its nice 40lb lift and its very lite and it has a nylon cover over the blader
I have the OMS travel wing (32#) and the Dive Rite Venture wing (30#)...I love both of them equally...I'd recommend either one... Both wings are actually doughnut shaped (not horseshoe).... I've never used Oxycheq but I've only heard good things about them.

We provide authentic, informative and memorable tour packages and city tours, at very competitive prices. Visit Moscow Tours are available not only in Moscow, but also in other cities: Saint Petersburg, Kazan, Suzdal and Sergiev Posad. We also organise customised individual programs tailored just for you.
Our guests come in large groups, small private groups, as couples or as single travellers. We take care of and treat our guests with respect in a friendly and warm family environment. We show people our beautiful cities with passion and deep knowledge of their history, culture and traditions.
Our guides are extremely hospitable, helpful and well-informed. They are simply the best because only by providing the best services can we make the world fall in love with Russia. And we are very happy when our guests say that they will definitely come back to Russia and that they will tell all their friends how great Russia is! That is what inspires us to put even more dedication and hard work into our tours, knowing that what we do is positive and meaningful.
Our classic tours include tours of Moscow and Saint Petersburg, two main Russian cities.
Moscow is a big and busy megalopolis and Russia’s capital city, where more than 12 million people live and work. Our capital city is happening place; it is mysterious, elegant, luxurious, fashionable, clean and bright, with its unique legends, traditions and events. It is with great pride that we show the Red Square and the Kremlin, our Underground and Tretyakovskaya Gallery, among other stunning attractions.
Saint Petersburg is our second capital, the second largest city in the Russian Federation. This wonderful city has a strong and lively aristocratic spirit, uniquely Russian royal architecture, magnificent museums and theatres. Saint Petersburg bears the royal heritage of Russia, which can be felt in its air, its streets, parks, monuments, museums and citizens. In Saint Petersburg tours, we will take you to the Hermitage, Peter and Paul Fortress, Faberge Museum and Orthodox Cathedrals. We’re sure you will love it!
If you have a few more days to spare, venture into the dreamy Russian countryside in Suzdal or Sergiev Posad. Suzdal is a small town with a population of about ten thousand people, situated on less than 15 square kilometres. This tiny area is home to 53 historic cathedrals, five monasteries and a kremlin. Church domes are visible like mushrooms from anywhere and everywhere in the town like in a fairy tale. No wonder Suzdal is called the ‘Town Museum”. It is definitely worth visiting!
Just try any of Visit Moscow Tours’ tour packages or any individual city tour, and we promise that you will want to come back to Russia again. Russia is huge with countless amazing places to visit. There are so many unique experiences to be had and energies to be felt that one tour is definitely not enough to explore this vast land. It is also a very safe destination to travel, and we have a tradition of warm hospitality. Our people adore and take care of visitors as our own guests, and even if they do not know your language very well, they still try to be helpful and hospitable.
Our guides will show you the most interesting attractions and historical places, taking you on a journey to the past to enjoy stories of medieval times, the Romanov monarchy, the Soviet Era. And of course, we will show you the contemporary life of our country through authentic local experiences.
We look forward to meeting you soon!

WWII Aviation's Stealth Pioneers: Unveiling the Horten Ho 229's Legacy
Posted: April 28, 2024 | Last updated: April 28, 2024
Developed by Nazi Germany during the twilight years of the Second World War, the Horten Ho 229 was a technological marvel that sparked discussions and debates that last to this day.
Recognized as the first pure-flying wing aircraft powered by jets, the Ho 229 was a brainchild of the Horten brothers—Reimar and Walter—who aimed to revolutionize aerial combat with their innovative design.
The aircraft's legacy is tainted by its origins yet is undeniably linked to the advancement of stealth technology in modern aviation.
The Ho 229 V3, the third prototype in the series and the only surviving example of this groundbreaking design was captured by US forces in April 1945 at the Gothaer Waggonfabrik factory.
It was intended to serve as the testbed for production models, boasting two 30 mm cannons and the potential to carry a 1,000 kg bomb load. Despite never reaching completion, the V3's design and purported capabilities were remarkable for its time. The aircraft is now a display piece at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., signifying a pivotal moment in aeronautical engineering.
The aircraft's development was part of a rapid innovation effort by the Luftwaffe, largely driven by their quest to find an edge in air superiority as the Allies advanced. It was an answer to the call for a "3×1000" fast bomber—an aircraft that could carry up to 1,000 kg of bombs, with a range of 1,000 km, and a speed of up to 1,000 km/h. This project later morphed into the Emergency Fighter Program in 1944, which sought to defend the Reich with more efficient fighter designs.
The Ho 229 possessed several characteristics that set it apart from other aircraft of the era. Its "pure" flying wing design aimed to minimize drag and maximize lift and aerodynamic capabilities. The aircraft’s unique shape and construction materials, including the use of wood mixed with charcoal and glue for some parts, played a role in early discussions about its stealth characteristics.
The flying wing design aircraft, unlike traditional planes with a noticeable fuselage and tail, does not have a fuselage, with the wing serving as the main structure of the plane. This design allows the aircraft to operate in stealth mode as no tail fins reflect radar waves, making the Ho 229 difficult to detect on radar. The Horten brothers were not the inventors of the flying wing design. Northrop later constructed a prototype for a flying wing bomber capable of bombing Nazi Europe from North America in case Britain was captured. The significance of this achievement has sparked debate, but it represents an early indication of the development of what would eventually evolve into stealth technology.
In 2008, Northrop Grumman constructed a full-scale Ho-229 aircraft model to measure its radar signature and determine its level of stealthiness. The model excluded engines and the metal frame. Findings indicated that at the HF/VHF frequencies employed by British Chain Home radars, the frontal RCS of the Ho-229 would be approximately 4 dB lower than that of a Messerschmidt Bf 109 fighter. This suggests that the radar signature of the Ho-229 was akin to that of conventional aircraft of similar size.

Is It Safe in Moscow?
Stanislav Solntsev / Getty Images
When you visit Moscow , Russia, you’re seeing one of the world’s largest, and most expensive, capital cities . While there is a history of violent crime against foreign journalists and aid personnel in Russia, a trip to Moscow is usually safe for mainstream travelers. Most tourists in Moscow only face potential issues with petty crime, though terrorism is also a concern. Visitors should stick to the principal tourist areas and abide by the local security advice.
Travel Advisories
- The U.S. Department of State urges travelers to avoid travel to Russia because of COVID-19 and to "exercise increased caution due to terrorism, harassment, and the arbitrary enforcement of local laws."
- Anyone exploring more of Russia should avoid "The North Caucasus, including Chechnya and Mount Elbrus, due to terrorism, kidnapping, and risk of civil unrest." Also, travelers should stay away from "Crimea due to Russia’s occupation of the Ukrainian territory and abuses by its occupying authorities."
- Canada states travelers should use a high degree of caution in Russia due to the threat of terrorism and crime.
Is Moscow Dangerous?
The Moscow city center is typically safe. In general, the closer you are to the Kremlin , the better. Travelers mainly need to be aware of their surroundings and look out for petty crime. Be especially careful in tourist areas such as Arbat Street and crowded places like the Moscow Metro transit system. The suburbs are also generally fine, though it is advised to stay away from Maryino and Perovo districts.
Terrorism has occurred in the Moscow area, leading authorities to increase security measures. Be more careful at tourist and transportation hubs, places of worship, government buildings, schools, airports, crowds, open markets, and additional tourist sites.
Pickpockets and purse snatching happen often in Russia, perpetrated by groups of children and teenagers who distract tourists to get their wallets and credit cards. Beware of people asking you for help, who then trick you into their scheme. Don’t expect a backpack to be a safe bag bet; instead, invest in something that you can clutch close to your body or purchase a money belt . Always diversify, storing some money in a separate location so that if you are pickpocketed, you'll have cash elsewhere. Keep an eye out for thieves in public transportation, underground walkways, tourist spots, restaurants, hotel rooms and homes, restaurants, and markets.
Is Moscow Safe for Solo Travelers?
Large cities like Moscow in Russia are overall fairly safe if you are traveling alone, and the Moscow Metro public transit is a secure and easy way to get around. But it is still a good idea to follow basic precautions as in any destination. Avoid exploring alone at night, especially in bad areas. You may want to learn some basic Russian phrases or bring a dictionary, as many locals don't speak English. However, in case you need any help, there are tourist police that speak English. Also, exploring with other trusted travelers and locals or on professional tours is often a good way to feel safe.
Is Moscow Safe for Female Travelers?
Catcalling and street harassment are infrequent in Moscow and the rest of Russia and females traveling alone don't usually have problems. There are plenty of police officers on the streets as well. Still, it serves to stick to Moscow's well-lit, public areas, avoid solo night walks, and use your instincts. Women frequenting bars may take receive some friendly attention. Females can wear whatever they want, but those entering Orthodox churches will be required to cover up. Though women in Russia are independent, domestic violence and other inequality issues take place regularly.
Safety Tips for LGBTQ+ Travelers
Russia is not known as a gay-friendly country. However, Moscow is one of the more welcoming cities with a blooming LGBTQ+ community and many friendly restaurants, bars, clubs, and other venues. Hate crimes in Russia have increased since the 2013 anti-gay propaganda law. Openly LGBTQ+ tourists in this conservative country may experience homophobic remarks, discrimination, or even violence, especially if traveling with a partner. Also, while women hold hands or hug publicly—whether romantically involved or not—men should avoid public displays of affection to prevent being insulted or other issues.
Safety Tips for BIPOC Travelers
Moscow and other big cities in Russia have sizable populations of various cultures, so discrimination against BIPOC travelers is rarer than in other parts of the country where it can become dangerous. Some people living in Russia who are Black, Asian, Jewish, and from other backgrounds have experienced racial discrimination and violence. Tourists won't usually experience overt racism but may be the recipients of some stares. If anyone should bother you, be polite and resist being taunted into physically defending yourself.
Safety Tips for Travelers
Travelers should consider the following general tips when visiting:
- It's best not to drink the tap water. If you do, boil it before drinking, though showering is safe and the amount used to brush teeth is generally not harmful. Mineral water is widely drunk, especially at restaurants, and if you prefer not to have it carbonated ask for “ voda byez gaz” (water without gas).
- If you need emergency assistance in case of fire, terrorism, medical issues, or more, dial 112 in Russia for bilingual operators.
- Be judicious about taking photographs, especially of police or officials. This can potentially bring unwanted attention to yourself by members of law enforcement who won’t mind asking to see your passport. Also avoid snapping photos of official-looking buildings, such as embassies and government headquarters.
- Carry your passport in as secure a manner as possible. If you get stopped for any reason by the police, they can fine or arrest you if you don't have the document with you. Also, keep photocopies of your passport, the page on which your travel visa appears, and any other documents that relate to your stay in Russia.
- Use official taxis only and steer clear of illegal taxi companies, especially at night. Ask your hotel to call a reputable taxi company.
