Utah tabbed to host first PGA Tour event since the 1960s

The PGA Tour will host a new event in Utah beginning in 2024. In an announcement on Friday, the tour said it is ending a six-decade hiatus from the Beehive State, as the Black Desert Championship is scheduled to launch in the fall of next year.

“We are thrilled to partner with Black Desert Resort in bringing PGA Tour golf to the state of Utah,” PGA Tour President Tyler Dennis stated in a news release Friday morning. “In introducing the PGA Tour to a new market, we look forward to collaborating with the Black Desert Resort team in their vision for professional golf in the Greater Zion community.”

The Black Desert Resort is located in ivins, Utah, about nine miles west of downtown St. George and about 40 miles from Zion National Park. The 650-acre resort is part of a $2 billion development currently under construction.

Additionally, the LPGA is expected to hold an event at the Black Desert Resort in 2025. Both tournaments are expected to be played on the resort’s new course, which opened in May and was designed by the late Tom Weiskopf in collaboration with architect Phil Smith.

The tour last visited Utah in 1963 with the Salt Lake Invitational at Salt Lake Country Club, where Tommy Jacobs was the winner.

Under the tour’s new restructured schedule the fall portion of the calendar will be used to determine status for this outside the FedEx Cup top 70.

Black Desert Resort is on a roll.

Literally, Black Desert Resort gained a giant piece of momentum for the new course located next to Entrada Golf Club in southern Utah.

It just opened in May.  

In the past 20 days, the Black Desert track landed a 2025 LPGA Tour event and a PGA Tour stop, the first Tour stop for Utah in 60 years.

The PGA Tour announced Friday that Utah’s newest golf course will host the Black Desert Championship in 2024. It will be part of the FedEx Cup fall series. In other words, many of the best golfers in the world will target Utah to chase Cup points.

This is huge.

The course hasn’t even cut its grass more than a few dozen times this summer and the world’s best players can now put two professional events on their calendar.

This is a home run for Utah, for golf in the state, and for Black Desert Resort, located in Ivins.

If you thought it was already hard to get tee times in southern Utah, just wait. The world will get a peek of Black Desert’s pristine and immaculate fairways and greens cut out of a beautiful lava field and word will spread about play all over the St. George area.

“Oh, this is big time,” said St. George director of golf Colby Cowan. 

“I mean, I think we’ll see big things happen around here because of it. I don’t think we fully understand the impact it’s going to have on our area and all golf courses. I mean, it’s going to elevate it to where people are going to be looking at St. George and Washington County as a true golf destination and getaway. 

“I think you can see some people saying, ‘Hey, let’s go to Bandon Dunes and the next year we’ve got to hit up St. George again.’ Everything is really gonna change the complexity of golf down here entirely. It’s a new set of eyes on all of our golf courses. I mean, it’s gonna help raise the tide a little bit. We’re all gonna benefit from it greatly and it’s going to make us work harder to make things better.”

In early May, I had the chance to play some of the holes at Black Desert. It was eye-popping, challenging, yet fair. The rough is minimal because of the wide fairways and the lava rock fields that line the entire layout. No question the layout can be set up to challenge the world’s best from the tips.

It is estimated the financial impact to the area will be more than $60 million. Black Desert Resort, when all phases are complete, is destined to be the largest resort in Utah — bigger than any ski resort. A hotel, shops, condos, spas, pools and the golf course will make it a destination stop for sure.

Covering the event as media or attending the event as a fan will be an interesting addition to the Utah sports scene.  

“Black Desert Resort has quickly made a huge impact on Utah golf history, already having announced an Epson Tour event, the Black Desert Resort Championship, this fall at Soldier Hollow Golf Course in Midway and bringing an LPGA Tour championship to St. George in 2025,” remarked Randy Dodson, publisher of Fairways Magazine, the official publication of the Utah Golf Association.

“With today’s announcement of a PGA Tour event in the fall of 2024, Black Desert Resort has reestablished Utah’s significance in professional tour golf, all at a time when the game of golf in Utah has seen significant growth. Junior golfers and even casual golf fans will now have a chance to see the world’s best golfers in person. And by the way, the golf course itself is a must-play.”

The Senior PGA Tour, now the Champions Tour, used to conduct a stop in Park City at Jeremy Ranch and we’d see some of the legends of the game. Then we had the Champions Challenge at Thanksgiving Point, which featured a lot of father-son combinations of senior pros, including hall of famers Johnny Miller, Billy Casper, Jack Nicklaus and many others.

But this Black Rock Championship event is a long-overdue call from the PGA Tour itself. The last time we had a Tour event was the Utah Open back in 1963 at the Salt Lake Country Club when Tommy Jacobs earned the trophy.

The folks at Black Desert Resort should be extremely satisfied. Tour officials dropped in for a visit, toured the course, viewed the resort hotel plans, and bit. It’s a giant compliment to all involved.

It says a lot about Tom Weiskopf’s design, located in a beautiful setting in our red rock country.

PGA golfers are adding this Utah resort to their 2024 tour schedules

After 60 years, professional golf is returning to Utah.

The PGA Tour has decided to follow suit with the LPGA and add a stop in the Beehive State. In 2024, Utah's Black Desert Resort will join the ranks of storied PGA courses like Pebble Beach and Augusta National by hosting a FedEx Cup competition. The biggest names in golf will descend upon Ivins to compete at the brand-new resort set against a backdrop of Utah's famous red rock.

If you're not familiar with the golf world, this is a very big deal. Utah Governor Spencer Cox emphasized the importance at a press conference in St. George announcing this milestone.

"To get the best golfers in the world here, that's something we haven't been able to do. And now we're doing it," Cox told St. George News . "I mean, a year from now we're going to have the best golfers in the world right here in Utah. To have Black Desert be a special place that can host both [the PGA and LPGA] is something really special for southern Utah."

About the Black Desert Championship

Both the LPGA and PGA events will bear the same name: the Black Desert Championship . The date of the event is yet to be determined but it will be part of FedEx Cup Fall, meaning fans can expect the competition to debut sometime during autumn 2024.

It is the first time PGA Tour golf will be played in Utah since 1963, when the state hosted the Utah Open Invitational.

The 2024 Black Desert Championship will be televised on Golf Channel, Peacock and PGA TOUR LIVE on ESPN+. Worldwide exposure from the Black Desert Championships is expected to shine a light on southern Utah's fabulous golf scene and bring visitors and fans from all over the globe.

A stunning course in Southern Utah

Black Desert Resort stands alone in its unique aesthetic—lush emerald fairways surrounded by ancient black lava fields, all set against a stunning backdrop of Southern Utah red rock.

Famed golf course designer Tom Weiskopf created the par-72 course that prioritizes playability, featuring generously wide fairways ranging from 70 to 100 yards. New Utah golf course lures PGA Tour back to the state for its first event in 60 years

Ivins • After a six-decade hiatus, the PGA Tour is finally returning to Utah and will bring many of the world’s top golfers and a global television audience with it.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox will join PGA Tour representatives at Black Desert Resort at noon today to announce the upcoming debut of the Black Desert Championship, which is expected to take place in the fall of 2024. The actual date of the event will be determined later.

“We are thrilled to partner with Black Desert Resort in bringing PGA Tour golf to the state of Utah,” PGA Tour President Tyler Dennis stated in a news release Friday morning. “In introducing the PGA Tour to a new market, we look forward to collaborating with the Black Desert Resort team in their vision for professional golf in the Greater Zion community.”

The new championship will be the first PGA Tour event in Utah since Tommy Jacobs beat Don January by a single stroke to win the 1963 Utah Open Invitational at the Salt Lake Country Club.

“We look forward to showing the world our beautiful home,” Cox told The Tribune via email.

The Black Desert Championship will be part of the PGA Tour’s 2024 FedExCup Fall, which starts in September of that year. The purse for the event is expected to be in the millions of dollars and the winner will be awarded 500 FedExCup points, according to the four-year agreement reached by the resort and tour officials.

The men’s event will be one of two professional golf events at the 650-acre resort, a $2 billion-plus development under construction in Ivins about 9 miles west of downtown St. George. The resort will also host an LPGA Tour event slated to debut in 2025.

There are only two other resorts in the country — The Ritz-Carlton Naples, Tiburón in Florida and Pebble Beach in California — that host both PGA Tour and LPGA events. Patrick Manning, the managing partner of Black Desert Resort, said the men’s event will be an economic boon.

“We are projecting somewhere between a $50 million and $70 million annual economic impact to the Greater Zion Region,” he said.

Both events will be played on the resort’s par-72 golf course, which opened in May and was the last of 73 courses designed by late golfing great Tom Weiskopf in collaboration with architect Phil Smith. The course, with its verdant greens tucked between black lava rock and framed by redrock cliffs, prompted Smith to liken the resort to Hawaii and Arizona all rolled into one.

“Black Desert is like Kona meets Sedona,” Manning said Smith told him during a visit Wednesday.

Others are also giving the resort kudos. Manning was at the resort with Cox recently as two golf-course raters with Golfweek magazine walked off the 18th hole in their direction.

“One one the raters looked at the other and said, ‘I’ve rated over 720 courses, and this is the best,’” Manning recalled. “The governor asked me, ‘Did you pay him to say that?’ I said ‘No, but I’m not above it.’”

News about the PGA Tour’s return to Utah is generating buzz in the state’s golfing community. Hall of Fame golfer Johnny Miller, who retired as NBC’s lead golf analyst in 2018, said marquee events like the Black Desert Championship are putting Utah on the map.

“This is great news,” he said. “Utah is definitely producing a lot of good players and has a lot of great golf courses. A lot of the pros vacation in Utah, and they obviously like what they see.”

Former Utah Gov. Gary Herbert, an avid golfer who has played on Black Desert’s course, echoed Miller’s excitement.

“This is tremendous news for the Utah golf community,” Herbert said, adding the PGA Tour is a nice complement to the Utah Jazz and all the other sporting events in the state. “The Utah Sports Commission’s slogan is ‘Utah is the state of sport.’ I’ve always said that it is not just a slogan, it is a lifestyle.”

The event will be broadcast nationally on Golf Channel, Peacock, PGA Tour Live and ESPN+. Internationally, coverage of the tour reaches more than 200 countries and territories in 26 languages via 44 broadcast and digital partners. Events can also be accessed on a variety of social media channels, including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, according to tour officials.

Not only will Black Desert Championship showcase the Greater Zion Region, Ivins Mayor Chris Hart said it will raise his small city’s profile as well.

“PGA — pretty great announcement,” Hart quipped. “Placing this event in Ivins is really a shot in the arm for the emerging resort destination community we are trying to be.”

Tuesday AM headlines: Utahans are warned to beware of scam PGA Tour ticket sells

Beware of scam tickets for PGA Tour in Utah

The Black Desert Resort is warning the public of scam websites claiming to sell tickets to a PGA Tour event in Utah this fall.

The popular PGA Tour hasn't been to Utah in 60 years, but this October, its holding five days of golfing events with the PGA Black Desert Championship.

The resort announced on Monday that VIP experiences and packages were available for the event. That same day, some attendees started buying regular tickets to the event — but official tickets don’t go on sale until June.

Black Desert warned against these scamming websites and urged everyone to only purchase tickets through their official ticketing website, which can be found at blackdesertevents.com .

According to Experian , if you are scammed into giving your credit card information or login credentials for financial accounts, including on a website, you should call your banks and credit card companies immediately to cancel those cards and receive new ones. They also recommend checking recent transactions to be sure you recognize them and to flag any fraudulent ones you find.

Utah could change rules on international students in high school sports

Utah’s policies on international students in high school sports could change as early as next year.

The Utah High School Activities Association has proposed increasing restrictions on F-1 visa students in high school sports. The move was prompted by seeing rules in surrounding states and hearing concerns about international recruiting.

Under the proposed law, schools with F-1 visa players would have three options. They could go independent and create their own schedule; let F-1 students play varsity games but give up the school’s ability to compete in postseason games; or only allow F-1 students to play sub-varsity.

The proposed bylaw is still being discussed and will go through the Executive Committee for possible changes before the Board of Trustees meets on May 1.

Draper clarifies ‘misperceptions’ a year after two houses collapsed

It’s been a year since two Draper homes slid off a cliff into the canyon below, causing the evacuation of nearby residents.

Draper City has released an update to residents, claiming there were “possible misperceptions” and inaccurate reporting about the incident.

The city clarified they never owned or sold the land to the developer, Edge Homes, who they claim had the responsibility of investigating what caused the homes to collapse.

Draper also emphasized all the public infrastructure and homes in the subdivision were inspected and met code standards at the time, and that the engineered fill where the collapse happened was inspected by professionals hired by Edge Homes.

Following the incident, Edge Homes has said they’re working with homeowners to provide compensation such as paying for relocation expenses.

Panguitch Lake reopened to fishing two weeks after crack found in dam

Two weeks after concerns of a possible dam failure, Panguitch Lake has reopened to fishing.

It was closed on April 10 after a large crack was found in the Panguitch Lake Dam that led to concerns of possible dam collapse.

On Monday, fishing was allowed once again on the lake, though officials are still asking people to stay away from the area surrounding the dam.

After efforts to reduce the water level on the lake, the Department of Public Safety said that as of Monday, the water level has dropped over twenty-six inches. Water is still leaking, but the agency says it has decreased dramatically.

Officials have also said that despite the cracks, complete dam failure is not likely.

JOHNSTON, R.I. and  NORTON, Mass. (April 22, 2024) –  The LPGA and FM Global announced today that tickets are now on sale for the 2024 FM Global Championship at TPC Boston. From Aug. 29 to Sept. 1, the 2024 FM Global Championship will feature a field of 144 players competing for a $3.5 million purse, one of the largest prize funds on the LPGA Tour outside of the majors and tour championship.

“We are excited to host the inaugural FM Global Championship and welcome the LPGA’s amazing athletes and fans to New England,” said David Johnson, senior vice president, chief client experience officer at FM Global. “With four days of thrilling competition scheduled, TPC Boston will be the place to be over Labor Day weekend this year.”

Tickets are available for purchase at  SeatGeek.com .  Daily general admission tickets  are $54, with  weekly general admission passes  available for $118. For an elevated competition experience, Champions Club packages, which include a parking pass, start at $385 for  daily admission  and $1,420 for  weekly access . The Champions Club at the 16th green will provide incredible views of the featured par-3 hole, along with access to shared food and beverage service, which includes light bites, afternoon snacks, water, soft drinks, beer and wine, as well as access to upgraded restroom facilities.

Additionally, a special Inside-the-Ropes experience is available for $1,500. This unique opportunity allows two guests to walk inside the ropes with a featured group during a competition round. The experience also includes access to the Champions Club and general parking.   In partnership with SERVPRO, the LPGA is pleased to offer both current and former members of the U.S. Military and certain guests complimentary grounds tickets regardless of sell-out.  Click here for information on military tickets.  SERVPRO is also the Official Mulligan Partner and Official Cleanup and Restoration Company of the LPGA.

Finally, volunteer opportunities are available for fans who want to participate in the week’s festivities. The inaugural event is seeking more than 550 volunteers to fill roles on 20 different committees, including Marshals, Standard Bearers, Walking Scorers and Hospitality. While some committees require golf knowledge, there are plenty of opportunities that require no golf knowledge or experience.  Click here for more information.

The 2024 FM Global Championship marks the LPGA Tour’s return to New England for the first time since the 2004 U.S. Women’s Open, held at Orchards Golf Club in South Hadley, Massachusetts, and won by Meg Mallon. The last time the Tour competed in the greater Boston area was 1997, when Liselotte Neumann won the Welch’s Championship at Blue Hill Country Club in Canton. Other notable women’s golf events held in Massachusetts include the 1954 and 1984 U.S. Women’s Opens at Salem Country Club in Peabody, the 1967-1968 and 1970-1974 KPMG Women’s PGA Championships at Pleasant Valley Country Club in Sutton, and the 1960 U.S. Women’s Open at Worcester Country Club in Worcester.

TPC Boston, located 25 miles south of Boston, opened in 2002 with an original layout by Arnold Palmer, followed by a 2007 redesign by Gil Hanse and Brad Faxon. The course has hosted 17 PGA Tour events, including the Deutsche Bank Championship, the Dell Technologies Championship and The Northern Trust. The 2024 FM Global Championship will be the first professional women’s competition held at TPC Boston.
