Set sail on board Sydney's very own authentic pirate ship for a truly unique and hilarious adventure. Sing a sea shanty and keep a look out for the buried treasure as the sails are hoisted on a search for wealth beyond your wildest dreams. Witness the treachery of a bounty-hungry crew and the brutality of a malicious captain as he draws his sword to battle for control of his ship. Session Length

• This experience is 1.5 hours in duration
• Sailing schedule from 12:00pm until 1:30pm
• Available on selected days only
• Boarding time is 15 minutes before departure

Important Information

• The supplier only caters for vegetarian and gluten free. Strictly no BYO.
• You must be 18 years of age and present a valid ID in order to consume alcohol.

Cancellation

• Change your booking up to 48 hours before the start time of your experience
• Changes are not permitted within 48 hours of your experience
• Late arrivals or no shows may result in you forfeiting your experience

Numbers on the Day

Minimum of 10 and a maximum of 50 participants.

The ship is covered and will sail in wet weather. Please bring wet weather gear if it looks like rain. If weather conditions or other factors cause the Master to cancel the sail, a rain check for another voyage will be issued.

Smart casual wear is fine, please consider the weather on the day. We suggest soft low heel shoes and a warm jacket. You are welcome to bring a small cushion if required. White shirts or pants might not be a great idea and no sharp heeled shoes.

A Tall Ship Family Pirate Cruise on Sydney Harbour – Updates

Aaarrrr me hearties… no seriously, you need to get right into piratical mindset, this is a family cruise with a seriously fun theme.

Many children were already dressed as pirates when we arrived at Campbell Cove, Circular Quay to step aboard our fine vessel, the Southern Swan.

 Actually, heaps of the parents were too.

The captain of the vessel looks the part.

So did the cabin boy, and it was he who introduced us to the ship and explained what would happen on our cruise around Sydney Harbour.

And it was he who organised the mutiny!

The kids had heaps of fun play acting and exploring the bowels of the ship on a treasure hunt.

For myself, man I love being on a ship and an old wooden one is a special thrill. My Dad had a wooden yacht and when we were kids we spent our summer holidays sailing up and down the West Coast of Scotland.

So I loved all the detail on the ship, the creak of the sails and the salty tang of it all.

This beautiful three-masted ship is named the Southern Swan. She was built in Denmark in 1922 and worked purely under sail around the chilly waters of the Baltic and over to Greenland for 27 years. That’s quite a thought isn’t it?

In 1986 she took part in the First Fleet Re-Enactment, arriving in Sydney on 26th January 1988. Since then she has been based in Sydney and was bought in 2007 by the warne and Woods family who own Sydney Tall Ships.

Being aboard brought back so many memories of my sailing holidays in Scotland.

It used to be me pulling up sails when I was a kid… not as big as these though!

Of course, being on the Harbour, just motoring and then sailing around was a delight in itself.

 Really, you wouldn’t be dead for quids, would you?

The Mast Climb On A Tall Ship

Dexbox14 asked if he could climb the mast. I said ‘go for it’ and paid the extra cost joyfully.

He was strapped into a safety harness and then he swarmed up the ratlines at speed. 

Dex spent ages up in the crows nest – what a fantastic thing for any young person to do. What a view of Sydney – and the world – from up there.

Why didn’t I go up there?  Next time!

Many moons ago, we did a weekend away to Broken Bay on that boat, with a group of friends – it was really great. I recently took the kids on the sunset cruise – motor out the heads then sail back in. It was such a lovely thing to do. Great for the adults, and the kids liked the ‘pirate’ ship experience. It wasn’t a pirate theme, but I sold them that idea anyway!

What an awesome adventure! This is definitely on my list of things to do. My daughter would love it, she is quite obsessed by pirates! Though I won’t be going up to the crows nest. I am way to scared of heights for that!

We got to go on the tall ships when they were in Perth Mr 5 had a ball. But how much better was it to actually sail out on one of the ships – let alone on Sydney Harbour.

What an awesome day out! I’m told I was dragged thru the Tall Ships when they were in Sydney Harbour for the bicentenary when I was all of about 7, but I don’t remember it. WIll file this one away in my brain for when my girls are a bit older. Miss 5 would walk the plank for sure right now!

A STAR OF THE SEA Søren Larsen, built in 1949, was one of the last fully traditional, cargo carrying sailing ships made for Baltic Trade. She was lovingly restored and re-rigged by the Davies family in 1978 to the graceful 19th century Brigantine she is today.

Søren Larsen has featured in Films & T.V. ‘The Onedin Line’, ‘French Lieutenant’s Woman’ and ‘Shackleton’ to name a few. In 1982, during the filming of Shackleton, she became the first wooden sailing ship to reach Arctic Greenland in 70 years. In 1991 she was the first British Tallship to round Cape Horn in 68 years.

Søren Larsen was the Flagship of the First Fleet Re-enactment Voyage. She led a fleet of 7 square riggers on an ambitious eight-month journey from Portsmouth to Sydney.

THE GRACEFUL “PIRATE” SHIP Southern Swan at over 100 years old and looking better with age. She’s been there & done that. Previously named ‘Our Svanen’, Southern Swan was built in Denmark in 1922. She has had a unique nautical history. Originally configured as a three-masted schooner, she sailed Baltic trade routes as a cargo vessel, including charters for Tuborg brewery until 1969.

In 1969, she was purchased as a private vessel by the Havers family and extensively refitted to handle larger and longer ocean voyages. She then sailed extensively for the Canadian Naval Cadets for nine years.

Southern Swan has stared in several films, including ‘Rite of Passage’, ‘Angels of the Deep’, ‘The Catalpa Rescue’ and ‘Darwin’s Brave New World’.

Southern Swan was the first vessel to sign up to make the voyage from England to Australia in 1988, and take part in the famous Australian Bicentennial First Fleet Re-enactment.

A REAL, RED, LITTLE BEAUTY. Coral Trekker is a square-rigged, wooden tall ship with distinctive rusty red sails. 1939 saw the keel laid, then the Second World War began. With a delayed start due to the war, the infamous Norwegian Adventures, who wrote the book “Ho Ho” sailed her to New Zealand and then planted their own anchors ashore.

Coral Trekker was then sold into the fishing industry. As a strong sea vessel, she was one of the only vessels that could reach the ‘Whahini’ passenger ferry that sunk in heavy weather, saving many lives. To acknowledge her heroism a Bay in the Snares group of Islands, off New Zealand’s coast is named after her original name “Ho Ho 2”.

Coral Trekker was refitted by “Australian Himalayan Expeditions” as a square-rigged ketch in preparation for The First Fleet Reenactment. Renamed “Coral Trekker”, she spent twenty-five years in the Whitsundays before moving to Sydney; here she attends east coast festivals, is involved in maritime training and also does daily sails and charters on Sydney Harbour.
