About Qatar Airways

Qatar airways fare classes, privilege club (elite status), how to earn qatar airways avios, how to redeem qatar airways avios for maximum value, qatar airways recapped.

If you want to fly internationally in style, Qatar Airways is a good choice. In 2023, it was awarded best business class in the world and second-best airline overall by Skytrax’s World Airline Awards, meaning you’re likely to have a stellar experience no matter which cabin you’re in.

Here's a look at Qatar Airways, its Privilege Club elite status program and the best ways to earn and redeem Avios for award flights on Qatar.

Qatar Airways, the national airline of Qatar, is based out of Hamad International airport in Doha. The Middle East carrier is a Oneworld alliance member and flies to more than 170 destinations in more than 80 countries, including a dozen destinations in the U.S.:

Chicago-O’Hare.

Dallas-Fort Worth.

Houston-Intercontinental.

Los Angeles.

New York-John F. Kennedy.

Philadelphia.

San Francisco.

Washington-Dulles.

Qatar Airways offers three cabins of service: economy, business and first. Additionally, each class is divided into “fare families” to give you flexibility when it comes to your travel needs. The more expensive the fare, the more amenities that will be included in the purchase price.

You can make a booking under the following Qatar fare families:

Economy class

Convenience.

This is what’s included in each economy fare type.

Business class

Here’s what’s included in each business fare type.

First class

The following are included in a first class elite fare ticket.

*Baggage piece allowance is applicable on flights to and from the Americas and flights from Africa.

The Privilege Club, Qatar’s loyalty program, has four membership tiers: Burgundy, Silver, Gold and Platinum. You automatically become a Burgundy member once you join the program.

After you sign up and start crediting paid flights to the program, you’ll earn Avios, which you can redeem for Qatar Airways flights as well as flights operated by partners. For example, you can transfer these Avios to British Airways and redeem them through the Executive Club program.

How to earn Privilege Club status

To move up the elite status ladder, you need to earn Qpoints, which you can earn by flying Qatar Airways or any Oneworld member airline.

What's the difference between Qpoints and Avios? QPoints are how you earn elite status, and don't post until you've completed an eligible flight. Meanwhile, Avios can be earned by spending on credit cards, flying, transferring between partners or booking flights (more on this below).

You have a 12-month period to qualify for status — it doesn’t have to be a calendar year. Once you qualify for status, you have another year or two to requalify and keep your status.

Here’s how many Qpoints you need to reach or retain Privilege Club elite status.

The requirements to requalify for status are a bit easier than they are to reach an elite tier initially.

However, you need to earn at least 20% of the required Qpoints by flying on Qatar Airways. Furthermore, at least four flight segments within the last 12 months or at least eight flight segments within the last 24 months must be flown on flights marketed or operated by Qatar. This means you can’t earn Privilege Club status by flying solely with other Oneworld members.

Privilege Club membership tiers

As a Privilege Club program member, you can enjoy the following perks with each status tier.

100% mileage per family member on all flights eligible for earning Avios.

100% mileage per family member on non-air partner transactions.

Eligible for Flexi awards.

Save 10% on seat selection fees.

Pay with Avios at Qatar Duty Free and Oryx Galleria stores.

Oneworld Ruby status.

25% tier bonus on eligible Qatar Airways flights.

Priority stand-by, check-in and boarding.

Save 20% on seat selection fees.

Extra baggage allowance of 33 pounds (15 kilograms) or one additional bag (depending on route).

Complimentary lounge access.

Oneworld Sapphire status.

75% tier bonus on eligible Qatar Airways flights.

100% mileage per family member on all eligible flights.

Complimentary access to preferred seats.

Extra baggage allowance of 44 pounds (20 kilograms) or one additional bag (depending on route).

40 Qcredits to redeem for seat upgrades, excess baggage and more.

Al Maha “meet and assist” service.

Discount on online redemptions.

Oneworld Emerald status.

100% tier bonus on eligible Qatar Airways flights.

Extra baggage allowance of 55 pounds (25 kilograms) or two additional bags (depending on route).

60 Qcredits to redeem for upgrades, excess baggage and more.

Avios don’t expire.

Privilege Club members earn Avios, which is the same currency shared by Aer Lingus AerClub, British Airways Executive Club, Iberia Plus and Vueling Club. You can transfer your Avios between all these programs at no cost.

Earn by flying

You can earn Qatar Airways Avios by flying Qatar and its Oneworld partners, such as American Airlines, Alaska Airlines and British Airways, to name a few.

In addition to Oneworld member airlines, you also can earn Avios by flying Qatar’s nonalliance partners, including:

Bangkok Airways.

JetBlue Airways.

LATAM Airlines.

Middle East Airlines.

S7 Airlines.

Virgin Australia.

The mileage earning rates vary depending on the class of service booked, the airline flown and your elite level in the Privilege Club program. To determine how many Avios you’ll earn on a specific flight, use Qatar’s mileage calculator .

Earn by transferring points

There aren’t any co-branded Qatar Airways credit cards available to U.S.-based flyers, but Qatar Privilege Club is a transfer partner of two bank programs: American Express Membership Rewards and Citi ThankYou Points . You can transfer both currencies at a ratio of 1:1. Terms apply.

Earn 80,000 Membership Rewards® Points after you spend $8,000 on purchases on your new Card in your first 6 months of Card Membership. Terms Apply.

If you collect Marriott Bonvoy points, you can transfer them to Privilege Club at a ratio of 3:1, with a bonus of 5,000 Avios for every 60,000 Marriott points transferred. This means that 60,000 Bonvoy points convert to 25,000 Qatar Airways Avios when transferred in one go.

It’s also possible to convert World of Hyatt points to Qatar Airways Avios. The points transfer at a rate of 2.5:1, with a bonus of 5,000 miles for every 50,000 World of Hyatt points converted, meaning you’ll end up with 25,000 Avios after transferring 50,000 Hyatt points.

Transfer Avios from Avios-earning partners

It’s possible to transfer Avios among all the loyalty programs that use Avios as their currency: Aer Lingus AerClub, British Airways Executive Club, Iberia Plus, Vueling Club and Qatar Privilege Club. The first step is to link your Privilege Club account to your British Airways Executive Club account.

Avios transfer at a ratio of 1:1 from either program and don’t have to be transferred in increments of 1,000. You could transfer as few as 1 Avios at a time if you wanted to.

At the moment, Qatar Avios can only be transferred to or from British Airways. If you need to move Iberia Plus Avios to Qatar, for example, you’d need to first transfer them to British Airways, then to Qatar.

» Learn more: Don't just redeem miles — redeem them wisely. Here's how

To redeem Qatar Airways Avios, you must be logged in to your Privilege Club account. The mileage rates depend on the route you fly and the class of service.

When pricing out award flights, make sure to select a standard redemption rate and not a Flexi rate, which requires double the Avios for the same itinerary.

U.S. to Qatar in business class

Business class award flights between Doha and its U.S. destinations start at 70,000 Avios with minimal taxes. Considering these flights last between 12 and nearly 16 hours, it’s a great redemption rate. You might even get lucky and fly one of the aircraft equipped with Qsuites , Qatar’s fancy business class pod.

Economy-class redemption rates on these routes start at 35,000 miles.

U.S. to the Maldives in business class

If you’re dreaming of flying all the way to the Maldives, an archipelago nation in South Asia, and in business class to boot, then Qatar has a great option for you. Another great redemption option is for flights between the U.S. and India.

A one-way flight from the U.S. to Delhi in Qatar’s business class requires 80,000 Avios, which is an excellent redemption rate if you can find it.

Qatar Airways and its Privilege Club loyalty program offers a lot of value to points and miles enthusiasts and die-hard loyalists alike. The redemption rates for premium service are quite reasonable, and, because of its membership in the Oneworld alliance and a few transfer partners, Avios aren’t difficult to obtain.

Qatar Airways, one of the leading airlines in the world, has implemented certain travel restrictions in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. These restrictions are designed to minimize the spread of the virus and ensure the safety of both passengers and crew members. Here are some of the current travel restrictions imposed by Qatar Airways:

  • Pre-travel requirements: Passengers are required to provide a negative COVID-19 test result, taken within a specified time frame before their departure. The specific time frame may vary depending on the destination, so it is important for travelers to check the requirements of their intended destination before flying. In addition, passengers may be required to fill out a health declaration form prior to travel.
  • Mandatory face masks: Qatar Airways has made it mandatory for all passengers and crew members to wear face masks throughout the journey. This includes wearing masks at the airport, during boarding, inflight, and while disembarking. Passengers are advised to bring their own masks, although the airline will provide masks to those who do not have one.
  • Limited onboard services: In order to minimize contact between passengers and crew, Qatar Airways has temporarily scaled back its inflight services. This may include reduced food and beverage options, limited duty-free sales, and suspension of certain onboard amenities. Passengers are encouraged to bring their own snacks and entertainment to ensure a comfortable journey.
  • Enhanced cleaning and disinfection: Qatar Airways has implemented enhanced cleaning and disinfection procedures on all its aircraft. High-touch surfaces such as armrests, tray tables, and seat belts are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected between flights. The airline also uses state-of-the-art HEPA air filters, which remove 99.97% of bacteria and viruses from the cabin air.
  • Travel restrictions to certain destinations: Qatar Airways operates flights to a wide range of destinations around the world. However, due to the constantly changing travel restrictions imposed by different countries, some destinations may be temporarily off-limits or require additional documentation, such as quarantine arrangements or proof of vaccination. Passengers are advised to check the latest travel advisories and entry requirements of their intended destination before booking their flight.

It is important for passengers to stay informed about these travel restrictions, as they are subject to change based on evolving global health situations. Qatar Airways is committed to prioritizing the safety and well-being of its passengers and will continue to monitor and follow all relevant guidelines and protocols. By adhering to these travel restrictions, passengers can have a safe and comfortable journey with Qatar Airways.

Qatar Airways, one of the major airlines in the world, operates flights to numerous destinations across the globe. However, there are certain countries or regions that have been banned from traveling with Qatar Airways due to various reasons. These restrictions may be temporary or permanent, depending on the situation in each country or region.

One example of a country that has been banned from traveling with Qatar Airways is Saudi Arabia. In June 2017, Saudi Arabia, along with several other Arab countries, imposed a blockade on Qatar. This blockade included a ban on all flights to and from Qatar, including Qatar Airways flights. As a result, Qatar Airways was forced to cancel many of its flights to Saudi Arabia and reroute its flights to avoid the countries involved in the blockade.

Another example is the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Following the blockade imposed by Saudi Arabia, the UAE also banned all flights to and from Qatar, including Qatar Airways flights. This meant that Qatar Airways had to reroute its flights and cancel its services to the UAE. The ban on Qatar Airways flights to the UAE is still in effect, and it remains unclear when it will be lifted.

Apart from the Middle East, there have been instances where Qatar Airways flights were temporarily banned from certain countries or regions due to diplomatic tensions or security concerns. For example, during the Gulf Crisis in 2017, the Maldives temporarily banned all flights and vessels from Qatar, including Qatar Airways flights. This ban was lifted after a few months when the tensions eased.

In some cases, countries may also impose restrictions on specific routes or destinations rather than banning Qatar Airways flights altogether. For instance, some countries in South Asia and Southeast Asia have restricted Qatar Airways flights from flying over their airspace due to political conflicts or security threats. These restrictions force Qatar Airways to take longer routes or make stopovers, which can inconvenience passengers and increase flight times.

It is important for travelers to stay updated on travel advisories and restrictions imposed by different countries and airlines. Qatar Airways provides regular updates on its website and through its customer service channels regarding any changes to its flight operations and destinations. It is advisable to check these updates before planning a trip with Qatar Airways or any other airline to avoid any unforeseen disruptions.

In conclusion, there are certain countries or regions that have been banned from traveling with Qatar Airways due to political conflicts, security concerns, or diplomatic tensions. Examples include Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and the Maldives. It is essential for travelers to stay informed about travel advisories and restrictions imposed by different countries and airlines to ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey.

The Current Status of Air Travel Restrictions in the United States

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Qatar Airways has implemented several requirements for passengers traveling on their flights to ensure the safety and well-being of all travelers. These requirements are in line with international health guidelines and aim to minimize the risk of COVID-19 transmission.

The first requirement for passengers traveling with Qatar Airways is to undergo a COVID-19 test prior to their departure. This test should be conducted within a specific timeframe before the flight, usually 48 to 72 hours. The test result should be negative in order for the passenger to be allowed to board the plane. This requirement is essential to prevent passengers who might be infected with COVID-19 from traveling and potentially spreading the virus to others.

Passengers are also required to wear a face mask throughout their journey, including at the airport and during the flight. Face masks should cover both the mouth and the nose and should be worn at all times, except when eating or drinking. This is an important measure to reduce the risk of respiratory droplets containing the virus from being transmitted from one person to another.

Furthermore, Qatar Airways has implemented enhanced cleaning and sanitization measures on all their aircraft. This includes thorough cleaning of all surfaces in the cabin, as well as the regular disinfection of commonly touched areas such as armrests, tray tables, and seatbelts. Passengers can be assured that the aircraft they are traveling on have been cleaned and sanitized in accordance with the highest hygiene standards.

To maintain physical distancing, Qatar Airways has also implemented measures such as reducing the number of passengers on each flight and reconfiguring the seating arrangement to allow for more space between passengers. This helps to minimize close contact between passengers and reduces the risk of virus transmission.

In addition to these requirements, Qatar Airways provides hygiene kits to all passengers. These kits include a face mask, gloves, and hand sanitizer, which passengers are encouraged to use throughout their journey. The airline also provides seat covers and a disposable bag for passengers to dispose of their used face masks and gloves.

It is important to note that these requirements may vary depending on the destination and local regulations. Passengers should check the latest information and guidelines provided by Qatar Airways and the relevant authorities of their destination before their journey.

In conclusion, Qatar Airways has implemented several requirements to ensure the safety of passengers traveling during the COVID-19 pandemic. These requirements include pre-departure COVID-19 testing, wearing face masks throughout the journey, enhanced cleaning and sanitization measures, physical distancing measures, and the provision of hygiene kits. By adhering to these requirements, passengers can travel with confidence knowing that their health and well-being are being prioritized.

Trump Contemplates Implementing Domestic Travel Restrictions Amidst COVID-19 Surge

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact travel worldwide, countries and airlines have implemented various quarantine measures to help control the spread of the virus. Qatar Airways, a renowned airline, has also put in place specific guidelines and regulations for passengers traveling with them.

To ensure the safety and well-being of its passengers, Qatar Airways has implemented a comprehensive set of quarantine measures. These measures are in line with the guidelines provided by the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and local health authorities.

Upon arrival at their destination, passengers traveling with Qatar Airways may be subject to health screenings. These screenings typically involve temperature checks and health questionnaires to assess the passenger's current health condition. Passengers who exhibit symptoms related to COVID-19 may be required to undergo further testing or be subjected to quarantine protocols.

In some cases, passengers arriving in certain countries may be required to undergo mandatory quarantine upon arrival. The duration of the quarantine period may vary depending on the country's regulations and guidelines. Passengers are advised to check the specific requirements of their destination before traveling.

To facilitate a smooth travel experience, Qatar Airways has made efforts to provide its passengers with up-to-date information regarding quarantine measures. They have implemented an online portal and mobile application where passengers can find the latest information on travel restrictions, quarantine policies, and health guidelines specific to their destination.

It is worth noting that the quarantine measures implemented by Qatar Airways are subject to change based on evolving circumstances and local health regulations. Therefore, passengers are advised to check the airline's website and official channels for the most accurate and up-to-date information before their journey.

Qatar Airways is committed to ensuring the health and safety of its passengers throughout their journey. The airline has invested in enhanced cleaning and sanitization measures onboard its aircraft and at its facilities. Additionally, they have implemented social distancing protocols, including seat blocking where feasible, to minimize contact between passengers.

In conclusion, Qatar Airways has implemented several quarantine measures for passengers traveling with them to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 transmission. These measures align with the guidelines set by international organizations and local health authorities. Passengers are encouraged to stay informed and comply with all the necessary requirements to ensure a safe and hassle-free journey.

Top 10 Countries without Quarantine Travel Restrictions

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, travel restrictions and requirements are subject to frequent changes. Qatar Airways is closely monitoring the situation and updating their travel policies in accordance with the guidelines and regulations established by local authorities and international organizations. It is important for travelers to stay informed and up to date on these changes before planning their trips.

Qatar Airways updates its travel restrictions regularly based on new information and developments regarding the pandemic. These updates can occur on a daily or weekly basis, depending on the evolving situation. The airline closely follows the guidelines set by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the World Health Organization (WHO), and local health authorities to ensure the safety of their passengers and crew.

To find the most up-to-date information regarding travel restrictions and requirements, passengers can visit Qatar Airways' official website. The website has a dedicated section for "Travel and Entry Requirements" where travelers can find specific information related to their destination. This section includes details about visa requirements, quarantine measures, COVID-19 testing guidelines, and other travel-related information. It is highly recommended to check this section frequently, as the information is subject to change.

Additionally, passengers can also contact Qatar Airways' customer service for further assistance and clarification. The airline's customer service representatives are trained to provide the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding travel restrictions. They can address any specific concerns or questions that passengers may have, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free travel experience.

To illustrate the frequency of these updates, let's consider a scenario where a passenger is planning a trip from Doha to London. Initially, there might be no travel restrictions in place, and the passenger can proceed with their travel plans. However, a few days before their departure, the local health authorities in London may implement new quarantine requirements for incoming travelers. In response, Qatar Airways will update their travel restrictions and inform passengers about the new requirements through their website and customer service channels. The passenger, staying informed, can then adjust their plans accordingly, allowing for a seamless journey.

In conclusion, Qatar Airways recognizes the importance of keeping travelers informed about the latest travel restrictions and requirements. They update their policies regularly and provide the most up-to-date information through their official website and customer service channels. It is recommended for passengers to stay updated by checking the Qatar Airways website frequently and contacting customer service if they have any specific concerns. By staying informed, travelers can ensure a safe and stress-free journey.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, most countries implemented special entry and exit restrictions. Qatar, being a highly visited destination, had imposed various measures from time to time to control the spread of the pandemic.

As the world cautiously emerges from the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic, nations are adapting their travel policies to align with evolving circumstances. The travel policy by Qatar’s Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) is reviewed from time to time, depending on the domestic and international situation.

This article explains everything about Qatar Travel and Quarantine rules in place now, including entry restrictions and eligibility for home quarantine.

Qatar Travel And Quarantine Updates

Protect yourself, current safety requirements.

On April 1, 2023, Qatar took a decisive step by lifting the last remaining COVID-19 travel restriction . This development signifies a promising shift in the global landscape, reflecting improved COVID-19 statuses in many parts of the world.

Travellers entering Qatar are no longer subject to COVID-19-related restrictions or requirements , offering a sense of relief and freedom to those eager to explore this vibrant destination.

The Ministry of Public Health in Qatar emphasizes the importance of maintaining vigilance in safeguarding health amidst the changing circumstances. While there are no longer specific travel restrictions, travellers are encouraged to adhere to standard infection prevention measures .

This includes staying updated on the latest COVID-19 developments, obtaining the updated COVID-19 booster vaccine, and monitoring both local and international updates on COVID-19 situations and requirements in their destination countries.

One notable aspect of Qatar’s policy is the requirement for everyone to wear a face mask when inside health facilities. This measure underscores the nation’s commitment to prioritizing public health and safety, even as travel restrictions ease. Visitors are expected to respect this requirement and adhere to it diligently during their stay in Qatar.

For those planning a trip to Qatar, the updated travel and return policy offers a welcome reassurance. Hi Prakash, Covid vaccination is not required for Hayya Card visitors.

I am an unvaccinated passenger from Denmark transiting Qatar to Manila, do I need to show antigen test result}

Hi Luna, Covid test is not required for transit passengers through Doha. You need to do it only if the Philippines require that. Please check the arrival requirements for the Philippines.

Hi I am a GCC resident with Indian Nationality. I need to travel for 2 weeks to DOHA for work. Do I need ehteraz approval to travel. I applied 4 days, still under process. Shall I travel without approval?

Hi Shams, Ehteraz approval is optional for GCC residents. If your profession is on the approved list you can travel without Ehteraz approval. If you are not sure, you can confirm your eligibility by calling +974-4406 9999.

My husband and I are flying London to Doha to stay with our daughter on 23rd October. Do we need a hotel booking to travel or to obtain visa on arrival?

Hi Audrey, As a hotel reservation is a requirement by rule, your airline will ask for it. So it is better to book a hotel and cancel after you arrive.

My colleagues want to travel to Doha to work on a project, they are GCC Indian Residents. Can you please advise about the visa procedure?

Hi Usman, For GCC Resident Visit Visa, please check the requirements and profession list: https://www.dohaguides.com/qatar-visa-on-arrival-for-gcc-residents/

Hi there. We are a family of 5. Husband, wife and 3 young children under 5 with a planned overnight stopover at a hotel in Doha prior to travelling to london. I am considered fully vaccinated however we have just found my wife isn’t because she had her 2nd dose of phizer >9 months ago. She is booked to get her phizer booster tomorrow. We fly the day after tomorrow. I thought this doesn’t make her vaccination status effective for 14 days but read here that for phizer it’s instant. Is this correct and where is that outline please? Is there an option for my wife to do 1 night hotel quarantine before travelling to UK so she can get the connecting flight? Thank you!!

Hi Adam, Please call the government helpline at +974-4406 9999 to check about the vaccination requirement. Also, make sure to apply for Ehteraz pre-travel approval immediately and do the RT-PCR test (48 hours before travel) or Antigen test (24 hours before travel).

why I can not book quarantine for september?

Hi Jasil, Discover Qatar hasn’t yet opened the bookings for September.

Hi , My self and my wife are resident of Qatar and are fully vaccinated . We are travelling back to Qatar from India on 15th August . My son is below 18 Years and his 2nd dose ( Pfizer) has been administrated before 12 months. In such case, does he have to go for home or hotel quarantine ? We will be doing PCR test before travel. Kindly advise as it is very urgent please. Thanks & Regards

Hi Azad, The validity of the 2nd dose is nine months. In this case, your son is considered unvaccinated. We assume he is above 12 years. a) If you are coming from a Red Health country, he needs five days of HOTEL quarantine, a PCR test before arrival and Rapid Antigen Test on day 5. b) If you are coming from a Standard Health country, he needs five days of home quarantine; a PCR test is not required before travel, but he needs a PCR test within 24 hours of arrival, plus a Rapid Antigen Test on day 5 of home quarantine.

hello . . .

i will reach Doha by next Friday … Visa on arrivals for GCC resident …

i have taken 2 doses of Pfiezer ( June 2021 ) so should i do PCR as 9 month over … to avoid quarantine ….

Hi Abdul Majeed, You would be considered unvaccinated as it is over 9 months since 2nd dose. You will need Ehteraz approval, PCR testing, five days of quarantine and an Antigen test on day 5. To avoid quarantine you need to take a booster dose.

thanks for your reply .. . .

I can travel immediately after the booster dose or also some days should be pass over ….

For Pfizer, Moderna, and Astra Zenica, you can travel immediately. For J&J, it is after seven days. For Siopharm, Sinovac, Sputnik, and Covaxin it is after 14 days.

Hello, I will arrive in Doha at 5:20 am on a flight from Egypt. How will my 1-day quarantine work? As I arrive very early, will I be able to go to the quarantine hotel room? Will I have to take a Rapid Antigen Test to get out of quarantine? When? Thank you.

Hi Carol, Please check the check-in time with your hotel. Normally this is from 2 or 3 pm. If there are enough free rooms, they may allow you to check in early. As your arrival is early morning, you need to discuss this with your hotel.

Are Red List countries based on nationality or place of origin? We are from a country with standard health measures but will be in Nepal prior to our visit to Qatar. Will we need to quarantine on arrival?

Hi Kyle, The classification is based on the country of departure. Vaccinated visitors arriving from Nepal will be subject to 1-day hotel quarantine. If you are a resident, you are exempted from quarantine. In either case, you need to do an antigen test upon arrival.

Routine vaccines

Recommendations.

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include

  • Chickenpox (Varicella)
  • Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis
  • Flu (influenza)
  • Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR)

Immunization schedules

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

COVID-19 vaccine

Hepatitis A

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Qatar.

Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series.

Travelers allergic to a vaccine component or who are younger than 6 months should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Unvaccinated travelers who are over 40 years old, immunocompromised, or have chronic medical conditions planning to depart to a risk area in less than 2 weeks should get the initial dose of vaccine and at the same appointment receive immune globulin.

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

All international travelers should be fully vaccinated against measles with the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, including an early dose for infants 6–11 months, according to  CDC’s measles vaccination recommendations for international travel .

Measles (Rubeola) - CDC Yellow Book

Rabid dogs are commonly found in Qatar. However, if you are bitten or scratched by a dog or other mammal while in Qatar, rabies treatment is often available.

Consider rabies vaccination before your trip if your activities mean you will be around dogs or wildlife.

Travelers more likely to encounter rabid animals include

  • Campers, adventure travelers, or cave explorers (spelunkers)
  • Veterinarians, animal handlers, field biologists, or laboratory workers handling animal specimens
  • Visitors to rural areas

Since children are more likely to be bitten or scratched by a dog or other animals, consider rabies vaccination for children traveling to Qatar.

Rabies - CDC Yellow Book

Recommended for most travelers, especially those staying with friends or relatives or visiting smaller cities or rural areas.

Learn actions you can take to stay healthy and safe on your trip. Vaccines cannot protect you from many diseases in Qatar, so your behaviors are important.

Eat and drink safely

Food and water standards around the world vary based on the destination. Standards may also differ within a country and risk may change depending on activity type (e.g., hiking versus business trip). You can learn more about safe food and drink choices when traveling by accessing the resources below.

  • Choose Safe Food and Drinks When Traveling
  • Water Treatment Options When Hiking, Camping or Traveling
  • Global Water, Sanitation and Hygiene | Healthy Water
  • Avoid Contaminated Water During Travel

You can also visit the Department of State Country Information Pages for additional information about food and water safety.

Prevent bug bites

Bugs (like mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas) can spread a number of diseases in Qatar. Many of these diseases cannot be prevented with a vaccine or medicine. You can reduce your risk by taking steps to prevent bug bites.

What can I do to prevent bug bites?

  • Cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats.
  • Use an appropriate insect repellent (see below).
  • Use permethrin-treated clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents). Do not use permethrin directly on skin.
  • Stay and sleep in air-conditioned or screened rooms.
  • Use a bed net if the area where you are sleeping is exposed to the outdoors.

What type of insect repellent should I use?

  • FOR PROTECTION AGAINST TICKS AND MOSQUITOES: Use a repellent that contains 20% or more DEET for protection that lasts up to several hours.
  • Picaridin (also known as KBR 3023, Bayrepel, and icaridin)
  • Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or para-menthane-diol (PMD)
  • 2-undecanone
  • Always use insect repellent as directed.

What should I do if I am bitten by bugs?

  • Avoid scratching bug bites, and apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to reduce the itching.
  • Check your entire body for ticks after outdoor activity. Be sure to remove ticks properly.

What can I do to avoid bed bugs?

Although bed bugs do not carry disease, they are an annoyance. See our information page about avoiding bug bites for some easy tips to avoid them. For more information on bed bugs, see Bed Bugs .

For more detailed information on avoiding bug bites, see Avoid Bug Bites .

Stay safe outdoors

If your travel plans in Qatar include outdoor activities, take these steps to stay safe and healthy during your trip.

  • Stay alert to changing weather conditions and adjust your plans if conditions become unsafe.
  • Prepare for activities by wearing the right clothes and packing protective items, such as bug spray, sunscreen, and a basic first aid kit.
  • Consider learning basic first aid and CPR before travel. Bring a travel health kit with items appropriate for your activities.
  • If you are outside for many hours in heat, eat salty snacks and drink water to stay hydrated and replace salt lost through sweating.
  • Protect yourself from UV radiation : use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, wear protective clothing, and seek shade during the hottest time of day (10 a.m.–4 p.m.).
  • Be especially careful during summer months and at high elevation. Because sunlight reflects off snow, sand, and water, sun exposure may be increased during activities like skiing, swimming, and sailing.
  • Very cold temperatures can be dangerous. Dress in layers and cover heads, hands, and feet properly if you are visiting a cold location.

Stay safe around water

  • Swim only in designated swimming areas. Obey lifeguards and warning flags on beaches.
  • Practice safe boating—follow all boating safety laws, do not drink alcohol if driving a boat, and always wear a life jacket.
  • Do not dive into shallow water.
  • Do not swim in freshwater in developing areas or where sanitation is poor.
  • Avoid swallowing water when swimming. Untreated water can carry germs that make you sick.
  • To prevent infections, wear shoes on beaches where there may be animal waste.

Keep away from animals

Most animals avoid people, but they may attack if they feel threatened, are protecting their young or territory, or if they are injured or ill. Animal bites and scratches can lead to serious diseases such as rabies.

Follow these tips to protect yourself:

  • Do not touch or feed any animals you do not know.
  • Do not allow animals to lick open wounds, and do not get animal saliva in your eyes or mouth.
  • Avoid rodents and their urine and feces.
  • Traveling pets should be supervised closely and not allowed to come in contact with local animals.
  • If you wake in a room with a bat, seek medical care immediately. Bat bites may be hard to see.

All animals can pose a threat, but be extra careful around dogs, bats, monkeys, sea animals such as jellyfish, and snakes. If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, immediately:

  • Wash the wound with soap and clean water.
  • Go to a doctor right away.
  • Tell your doctor about your injury when you get back to the United States.

Consider buying medical evacuation insurance. Rabies is a deadly disease that must be treated quickly, and treatment may not be available in some countries.

Reduce your exposure to germs

Follow these tips to avoid getting sick or spreading illness to others while traveling:

  • Wash your hands often, especially before eating.
  • If soap and water aren’t available, clean hands with hand sanitizer (containing at least 60% alcohol).
  • Don’t touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. If you need to touch your face, make sure your hands are clean.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
  • Try to avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • If you are sick, stay home or in your hotel room, unless you need medical care.

Avoid sharing body fluids

Diseases can be spread through body fluids, such as saliva, blood, vomit, and semen.

Protect yourself:

  • Use latex condoms correctly.
  • Do not inject drugs.
  • Limit alcohol consumption. People take more risks when intoxicated.
  • Do not share needles or any devices that can break the skin. That includes needles for tattoos, piercings, and acupuncture.
  • If you receive medical or dental care, make sure the equipment is disinfected or sanitized.

Know how to get medical care while traveling

Plan for how you will get health care during your trip, should the need arise:

  • Carry a list of local doctors and hospitals at your destination.
  • Review your health insurance plan to determine what medical services it would cover during your trip. Consider purchasing travel health and medical evacuation insurance.
  • Carry a card that identifies, in the local language, your blood type, chronic conditions or serious allergies, and the generic names of any medications you take.
  • Some prescription drugs may be illegal in other countries. Call Qatar’s embassy to verify that all of your prescription(s) are legal to bring with you.
  • Bring all the medicines (including over-the-counter medicines) you think you might need during your trip, including extra in case of travel delays. Ask your doctor to help you get prescriptions filled early if you need to.

Many foreign hospitals and clinics are accredited by the Joint Commission International. A list of accredited facilities is available at their website ( www.jointcommissioninternational.org ).

In some countries, medicine (prescription and over-the-counter) may be substandard or counterfeit. Bring the medicines you will need from the United States to avoid having to buy them at your destination.

Select safe transportation

Motor vehicle crashes are the #1 killer of healthy US citizens in foreign countries.

In many places cars, buses, large trucks, rickshaws, bikes, people on foot, and even animals share the same lanes of traffic, increasing the risk for crashes.

Be smart when you are traveling on foot.

  • Use sidewalks and marked crosswalks.
  • Pay attention to the traffic around you, especially in crowded areas.
  • Remember, people on foot do not always have the right of way in other countries.

Riding/Driving

Choose a safe vehicle.

  • Choose official taxis or public transportation, such as trains and buses.
  • Ride only in cars that have seatbelts.
  • Avoid overcrowded, overloaded, top-heavy buses and minivans.
  • Avoid riding on motorcycles or motorbikes, especially motorbike taxis. (Many crashes are caused by inexperienced motorbike drivers.)
  • Choose newer vehicles—they may have more safety features, such as airbags, and be more reliable.
  • Choose larger vehicles, which may provide more protection in crashes.

Think about the driver.

  • Do not drive after drinking alcohol or ride with someone who has been drinking.
  • Consider hiring a licensed, trained driver familiar with the area.
  • Arrange payment before departing.

Follow basic safety tips.

  • Wear a seatbelt at all times.
  • Sit in the back seat of cars and taxis.
  • When on motorbikes or bicycles, always wear a helmet. (Bring a helmet from home, if needed.)
  • Avoid driving at night; street lighting in certain parts of Qatar may be poor.
  • Do not use a cell phone or text while driving (illegal in many countries).
  • Travel during daylight hours only, especially in rural areas.
  • If you choose to drive a vehicle in Qatar, learn the local traffic laws and have the proper paperwork.
  • Get any driving permits and insurance you may need. Get an International Driving Permit (IDP). Carry the IDP and a US-issued driver's license at all times.
  • Check with your auto insurance policy's international coverage, and get more coverage if needed. Make sure you have liability insurance.
  • Avoid using local, unscheduled aircraft.
  • If possible, fly on larger planes (more than 30 seats); larger airplanes are more likely to have regular safety inspections.
  • Try to schedule flights during daylight hours and in good weather.

Medical Evacuation Insurance

If you are seriously injured, emergency care may not be available or may not meet US standards. Trauma care centers are uncommon outside urban areas. Having medical evacuation insurance can be helpful for these reasons.

Maintain personal security

Use the same common sense traveling overseas that you would at home, and always stay alert and aware of your surroundings.

Before you leave

  • Research your destination(s), including local laws, customs, and culture.
  • Monitor travel advisories and alerts and read travel tips from the US Department of State.
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) .
  • Leave a copy of your itinerary, contact information, credit cards, and passport with someone at home.
  • Pack as light as possible, and leave at home any item you could not replace.

While at your destination(s)

  • Carry contact information for the nearest US embassy or consulate .
  • Carry a photocopy of your passport and entry stamp; leave the actual passport securely in your hotel.
  • Follow all local laws and social customs.
  • Do not wear expensive clothing or jewelry.
  • Always keep hotel doors locked, and store valuables in secure areas.
  • If possible, choose hotel rooms between the 2nd and 6th floors.

Healthy Travel Packing List

Use the Healthy Travel Packing List for Qatar for a list of health-related items to consider packing for your trip. Talk to your doctor about which items are most important for you.

Why does CDC recommend packing these health-related items?

It’s best to be prepared to prevent and treat common illnesses and injuries. Some supplies and medicines may be difficult to find at your destination, may have different names, or may have different ingredients than what you normally use.

If you are not feeling well after your trip, you may need to see a doctor. If you need help finding a travel medicine specialist, see Find a Clinic . Be sure to tell your doctor about your travel, including where you went and what you did on your trip. Also tell your doctor if you were bitten or scratched by an animal while traveling.

For more information on what to do if you are sick after your trip, see Getting Sick after Travel .

I imagine the issue is with the availability of seat selection rather than the seats being sold out. I would roll up to the check-in counter at the airport as early as possible.

"I tried checking in online and it says its unavailable for this booking."

My guess is that SQ staff at the check in counters would like to verify/check your travel documents/visas, etc. so I wouldn't be too worried. Unfortunately, you will probably miss out on choosing better seats.

Ahh okay..that's a shame. Bit annoyed but will try and sort by going early to airport. Thank you.

Correction:

Sorry, I meant QR as SQ stands for Singapore A1rlines.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Tourist visas:  When traveling on a U.S. tourist passport, travelers may obtain a free visa upon arrival, if they have six-months validity in their passport and a return or onward ticket. The visa is valid for 30 days from the date of issuance and entitles the holder to spend up to 30 days in Qatar, or multiple entries during the 30-day validity. It may be extended for a further 30 days. See the Government of Qatar’s website for  visa information .

Former Residency Permit Holders:  Former resident permit holders seeking to return to Qatar should carry a “no objection letter” issued by their former sponsor.

For further information on residence permits, see the  Qatari government  or  U.S. Embassy website .

Exit Permits:

  • Exit permits are no longer required for U.S. citizens working in Qatar, with the exception of employees deemed “essential” by their employers, who must still be granted an exit permit.
  • If you owe money, you will be barred from exiting Qatar. Qatari banks place holds on accounts to ensure all debts are paid before you leave.
  • U.S. citizens with family residence visas do not need an exit permit. However, a family member who sponsors their dependents (usually the person employed in Qatar) can elect to receive instant notification if dependents attempt to depart the country.

Qatar does not recognize dual nationality.  If you hold Qatari citizenship, Qatari law requires that you enter and exit on your Qatari passport. Qatari authorities may confiscate your U.S. passport if you hold Qatari/U.S. dual nationality. Should this happen, contact the U.S. Embassy. The seizure does not constitute loss of U.S. citizenship.

Military Personnel  should consult the Department of Defense Foreign Clearance Guide before traveling, since different entry/exit requirements may apply. For further information, call the Host Nation Coordination Cell of the 379 th  Air Expeditionary Wing at 011-974-5551-0815.

Some restrictions  exist for foreign residents of Qatar who test positive for certain communicable diseases, including HIV/AIDs. Medical exams are required for individuals seeking residency in Qatar, but not for transit passengers or short-term visitors.  Qatari authorities will not bar HIV-positive temporary visitors from entry to Qatar based on their health status.  However, Qatar denies residency and employment to HIV or tuberculosis-positive applicants (among other communicable diseases).  Short-term visitors to Qatar with medications on their person are advised to carry a copy of their prescriptions. Please verify this information with the  Embassy of Qatar  before you travel.

Customs  regulations prohibit the import of alcohol over the duty-free cap, narcotics, pork products, weapons or weapons-related articles (hand cuffs, laser pointers, etc.), drones, professional photography equipment to include telescopic lenses, as well as pornographic or sexually-related materials.

See Qatar’s  website  for specific information regarding customs requirements.

Find information on  dual nationality ,  prevention of international child abduction  and  customs regulations  on our websites.

Safety and Security

Terrorism:  Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad.  Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, and vehicles – to target crowds more effectively target crowds.  Frequently, their aim is unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as:

  • High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)
  • Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
  • Places of worship
  • Schools
  • Parks
  • Shopping malls and markets
  • Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

For more information, see our Terrorism page.

Exercise normal precautions in Qatar.  See our Travel Advisory for more information. Safety Precautions:

  • Practice personal security measures at all times.
  • Keep a low profile.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and local events.
  • Stay alert in locations frequented by Westerners.
  • Monitor local media broadcasts and consular messages.
  • Vary travel routes and times when possible.
  • Be extra vigilant when frequenting banks or ATMs.

Areas to Avoid:

  • Large crowds and demonstrations in case of unrest
  • Labor or work camps located outside of cities and major industrial areas.  These areas are highly congested with limited physical and hygiene standards.

Crime : The crime rate in Qatar is generally low. Incidents of violence and petty theft are rare but do occur.  There is a large police presence throughout the country.

International Financial Scams: See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  webpages for information on scams.

Victims of Crime : Report crimes to the local police at 999 and contact the U.S. Embassy at + (974) 4496-6000.  Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime.

Victims of Sexual Assault:  Sexual relations outside of marriage are illegal in Qatar and subject to criminal prosecution. Instances can result in arrest, fines, imprisonment, and deportation.  If a U.S. citizen is a victim of sexual assault in Qatar, we strongly encourage you to contact the U.S. Embassy immediately, prior to contacting the local authorities.

Domestic Violence:  U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are strongly urged to contact the Embassy immediately at + (974) 4496-6000 for assistance. Victims may also seek medical care through Hamad Hospital emergency room at 16060 or +(974) 4439-5777 if you are calling from overseas.

  • Help you find appropriate medical care
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police
  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent
  • Provide general information regarding the victim’s role during the local investigation   and following its conclusion Provide
  • Provide a list of  local attorneys
  • Provide our information on  victim’s compensation programs in the U.S.
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution
  • Help you arrange flights home
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport
  • Assist in the birth or death of a U.S. Citizen

See our webpage on help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

Information on local resources and assistance can be found on the Protection and Social Rehabilitation Centre website and through their hotline: 6693-3999, 6693-3108, or 6693-3919.

Tourism : The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders are generally unable to access areas outside of major cities and to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Exit bans prevent those faced with legal proceedings from leaving Qatar until their case is abandoned or resolved.  This can take months or years. The Government of Qatar does not offer any social support for individuals under exit bans.

Reasons for exit bans can include:

  • Labor or financial disputes
  • Personal debt (including bounced checks, credit card debt, and bank loans)
  • Outstanding contracts or leases
  • Traffic fines
  • Pending legal matters, including cases related to gestures or behavior reported by Qataris that are viewed as “offensive.”

U.S. citizens have been subjected to exit bans and/or placed in prison pending payment of debts.

Always carry a copy of your passport for proof of identity, or authorities may detain you for questioning.

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be arrested, deported, or imprisoned.  Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the U.S., regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  Department of Justice  website.

Criminal penalties for certain offenses are much harsher than those in the U.S.:

  • Incidents involving obscene language, gestures, or insulting comments often result in arrest, imprisonment, and/or fines.
  • Alcohol-Related Offenses, including public intoxication, can result in severe penalties such as arrest, heavy fines, imprisonment, and/or deportation.  Qatar maintains a zero-tolerance policy against drinking and driving.
  • Use of Illegal Drugs can result in long jail sentences and steep fines.

Arrest Notification:  Qatari authorities do not routinely notify the U.S. Embassy of a U.S. citizen’s arrest. If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. If you are not allowed to do so, ask a friend or family member to contact the U.S. Embassy.  See our  webpage  for further information.

For more serious crimes, Qatari authorities may not allow U.S. Embassy officials to visit until the initial interrogation is completed.

Qatari police sometimes arrest U.S. citizens without providing access to legal counsel.  You could be arrested for being a:

  • Potential witness to a crime (including traffic accidents involving injuries; slander, traffic arguments, etc.)
  • Relative of a suspect
  • Criminal Suspect

If arrested—regardless of the charge—you may spend 1-2 nights in jail before a hearing takes place. Once arrested, only the Qatari Public Prosecution and Courts have the authority to grant a release.

See our  webpage  for further information.

Qatari law favors employers over employees.  In the event of a contract or employment dispute, Qatari authorities refer to the Arabic language of a contract. Employees have limited recourse if their employer terminates a contract early. If a sponsor files a complaint against an employee who departed Qatar, the employee may be barred from returning to Qatar, even on a tourist or airport visa. Many terminated U.S. citizens have been barred from departing Qatar because of pre-existing debt.

Despite recent legal changes, transferring employment prior to the end of a contract often requires the permission of the previous employer and is subject to approval by the Ministry of the Interior. Additional mechanisms for transferring employers exist through the Ministry of Interior in cases such as bankruptcy, abuse, or repeated failure to pay an employee on time.

Drug Use: Most drugs that are illegal in the United States are also illegal in Qatar, including marijuana/THC, CBD products, and vape products. The potential consequences for use or possession may be harsh.

Clothing : Many public areas in Qatar have dress codes that require both men and women cover shoulders, chests, stomachs, and knees, and that tight leggings be covered by a long shirt or dress. Attire standards can vary between neighborhoods and facilities.  Faith-Based Travelers:  Religion is a very sensitive issue in Qatar; treat any discussions on religion with care and caution. The law provides for a prison sentence of up to seven years for defaming, desecrating, or committing blasphemy against Islam, Christianity, or Judaism. Public worship by non-Islamic faiths and atheism are illegal and subject to prosecution.

Proselytizing is against the law.  Attempts to covert a member of another religion or even “share your faith” can be considered “proselytizing.” Penalties cancan include deportation or imprisonment.

While you may import religious material for personal use,  bringing religious materials into the country for proselytizing purposes is prohibited.

Charitable activities, both religious and non-religious, must be approved in advance by the Ministry of Social Affairs.

See our following webpages for details:

LGBTQI+ Travelers:  Same-sex sexual relations between men are illegal, even if consensual. Penalties include lashing, lengthy prison sentences and/or deportation.

There is no law criminalizing same-sex sexual relations between women, though cultural norms are conservative.

Businesses are prohibited from selling and individuals are prohibited from distributing rainbow colored merchandise.

See our  LGBTI Travel Information  page and section 6 of our  Human Rights report  for further details.

Travelers with Disabilities: The law in Qatar prohibits discrimination against persons with physical, sensory, intellectual, or mental disabilities, the law is not enforced.  Social acceptance of persons with disabilities in public is not as prevalent as in the in the United States.  Expect accessibility to be limited in public transportation, lodging, communication/information, and general infrastructure.

Students : See our  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers:  Unaccompanied expatriate women may be verbally and/or physically harassed. In deference to Islamic culture, avoid wearing sleeveless shirts, halter-tops, or shorts. Only wear athletic clothing in public when engaged in sports activities.

See our travel tips for  Women Travelers .

Journalists : Journalists, including independent content creators and vloggers, need specific visas and permissions to use photography and videography equipment, or to conduct interviews or reporting within Qatar. There is no legal guarantee of press freedom or freedom of expression in Qatar.

Photography : Photographing local people in Qatar, particularly women, is illegal without permission.

COVID-19 Testing:  COVID-19 tests are available from many local medical providers and hospitals. Testing is paid for by the individual or, in some instances, their insurance plan or employer. Private hospitals charge QR 50 - 160 test. Test results are usually provided by email, but some clinics require you to pick up the travel certificate in person. Please refer to the Ministry of Public Health’s webpage for additional information.

COVID-19 Vaccines:   The COVID-19 vaccine is available for U.S. citizens to receive in Qatar. Please refer to the Ministry of Public Health’s webpage for additional information.

Visit the FDA's website to learn more about FDA-approved vaccines in the United States.

Modern medical facilities and Western-style pharmacies are available. Doctors and hospitals expect immediate cash payment for health services.

For information on the Qatari national healthcare system, see the  Qatar Ministry of Health website .

For emergency services in Qatar, dial 999.

Ambulance services are widely available.

We do not pay medical bills.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance:  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See  our webpage  for more information on insurance coverage. Visit the  U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  for more information on the type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Some prescription medications from the United States are unavailable or restricted in Qatar, for example, stimulants, strong pain medications, and some medications used by HIV+ patients. Check with the  Qatari customs authority  on proper travel procedures and the  Ministry of Public Health  to ensure the medication is legal in Qatar. Discuss a health care plan with your doctor before you travel.

Contraceptives, Pregnancy, and Prenatal Care:  Sexual intercourse outside of marriage is illegal in Qatar.  As such, pregnant women must present a marriage certificate to receive prenatal care at medical facilities in Qatar.  Unmarried pregnant women should consult the U.S. Embassy prior to pursuing prenatal care in Qatar. Contraceptives are available over the counter with no prescription required. Emergency contraceptives are not available. We advise all travelers to plan accordingly.

Vaccinations : Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Further Health Information:

  • World Health Organization
  • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  (CDC)

Air Quality:  Air quality is poor in Qatar, with frequent dust and particle pollution. Members of sensitive groups may experience more serious health effects. Visit  AirNow Department of State  for information on air quality at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

The U.S. Embassy maintains a  list of doctors and hospitals . We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety: For current traffic regulations, see the  Ministry of Interior’s Traffic Police  website.

Driving:  The legal minimum driving age is 18.  Holders of a U.S. issued driver’s license can drive in Qatar for two weeks, but most car rental agencies require an international driver’s license. Three-month Temporary Licenses are available.  International Driving Licenses are valid in Qatar for six months from the date of arrival.  Resident expatriates should apply for a full Qatari license. If you are caught operating a vehicle without a valid license, penalties can be severe.  For more information, see the Qatari Traffic Services website .

Traffic accidents  are one of the leading causes of death in Qatar. The extensive use of roundabouts, numerous road construction projects, and high-speed driving can be challenging. In rural areas, poor lighting, wandering camels, and roads without shoulders create hazards.  If you are in an accident without a license, any insurance may be held invalid, and you could be left with extensive bills and legal charges.

Avoid arguments over traffic incidents . Qatari citizens who feel insulted can file a police complaint that can result in your arrest and overnight detention. Drivers are liable for persons injured in a traffic accident. Local police have held U.S. citizens overnight while ascertaining the extent of injuries.

Traffic Fines:  Please be aware that traffic offenses are easily captured via well-placed cameras and the fines can be expensive. Unpaid traffic fines can result in an exit ban until reconciled.

Public Transportation:  Regulated and registered taxi services (Uber, Karwa, Fox Transportation, and Careem) are widely available and generally safe to use. The Embassy recommends you avoid use unlicensed taxi operators or drivers who approach you and attempt to solicit business. Do not allow the driver to pick up additional passengers along the way. To avoid cultural misunderstandings, females traveling alone should always sit in the back (never the front) seat.

Qatar Rail : The Doha Metro is safe, modern, and inexpensive.

Mowasalat Public Bus : Laborers and construction workers predominantly use this mode of public transportation. The front seats in the buses are generally reserved for women and children. The U.S. Embassy recommends the use of regulated taxi services rather than public buses.

See our  Road Safety page  for more information.

Aviation Safety Oversight:  The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the government of Qatar’s Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Qatar’s air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the  FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel:  Mariners planning travel to Qatar should also check for  U.S. maritime advisories and alerts . Information may also be posted to the  U.S. Coast Guard homeport website , and the NGA broadcast warnings .

Here are some Qatar Airways Travel Requirements

Essentials for a passport.

Your passport is your most important travel companion. Bring one that is still valid and has plenty of life left in it be sure to plan as some destinations require additional validity above your travel dates. The helpful website of Qatar Airways walks you through the requirements of each country regarding the length of validity of a passport.

Travel Visa

Avoid the lines! In Qatar, certain lucky nationalities can enter without a visa. Before you even book, check the list on the Qatar Airways website. Others, do not be alarmed! For a planned visa, visit the closest Qatari embassy or use Qatar Airways face mask policy the convenient e-Visa option. Passengers on the transit system? Fears about obtaining a visa will go away if you stay airside.

Health Checkpoints

COVID-19 guidelines? Always developing? Do not be alarmed. Use official sources at your destination and the travel alerts provided by Qatar Airways to stay informed. Pre-departure PCR tests may be required by certain nations, even for fully vaccinated individuals. Qatar Airways travel requirements for pregnant passengers

Qatar Airways travel requirements for pregnant passengers

1. Consulting Your Doctor

Before you book your flight , consult your doctor. Their expert opinion on your specific pregnancy and planned journey length will determine your general ability to fly with Qatar Airways. Remember that they are always concerned with your well-being and the health of your unborn child. Never be afraid to discuss any concerns or questions you may have; their advice is invaluable.

2. Pregnancy Stage Restrictions

Qatar Airways has a strict policy against accepting passengers who are more than 36 weeks pregnant for your and your baby’s safety. This restriction is in place to reduce the risks associated with flying in the later stages. If you are unsure of your gestational age or have any questions about this policy, please contact the airline or your doctor for clarification.

3. Documentation Requirement

Your specific situation and stage of pregnancy may require you to provide a medical certificate issued no later than ten days before your departure. Consider this the formal go-ahead to travel from your doctor. Essential information such as your name, date of birth, estimated due date, baby’s gestation age, and confirmation of a healthy single or simple multiple pregnancy are usually included in the certificate. Above all, it reflects the opinion of your physician that you are well enough to travel for the duration of the trip, including the return flight. Recall that having this documentation is easy.

4. Multiple Pregnancies: Extra Care Needed

There are extra factors to consider while carrying twins or multiple happy babies. Qatar Airlines may impose earlier travel restrictions for multiple pregnancies depending on your doctor’s assessment. You must speak with a doctor and contact the airline directly to find out the exact policies and procedures that apply to your particular circumstance.

5. High-Risk Pregnancies

It may be necessary to obtain additional medical clearances or restrictions if your doctor determines that your pregnancy is high-risk. This emphasizes how crucial it is to keep lines of communication open with Qatar Airways and the doctor who treats you. Please feel free to share any important details or worries you may have. Together, they can design a trip itinerary that puts your safety first and reduces any possible hazards.

Qatar Airways Face Mask Policy

During the ongoing pandemic, Qatar Airways’ current face mask policy is intended to put the health and safety of both passengers and crew members first. Below is a summary of the main ideas

Mandatory Masking

  • Who : All passengers on Qatar Airways flights, regardless of age, destination, or vaccination status, are required to wear face masks. All passengers, including children with certain exceptions and adults, are subject to this policy.
  • When : Masks must be utilized from the time of check-in until the time of departure. It is acceptable to take off the mask for brief periods to perform necessary tasks like eating or taking medication, but you must quickly replace it.
  • Where : For maximum protection, the mask needs to fit comfortably over your mouth and nose.

Acceptable Mask Types

Masks that are approved: For maximum safety, only specific types of masks are allowed by Qatar Airways. Among them are:

  • Medical masks are disposable, everyday masks used for medical purposes.
  • Surgical masks : stronger than standard medical masks, these masks provide better filters.
  • High-efficiency respirators that offer substantial protection against airborne particles are KN95/N95 respirators.
  • KF94 masks are the South Korean version of KN95 masks, which follow to the same filtration requirements.

Popular Destinations and Their Specific Requirements

Qatar Airways

As of this moment, Qatar Airways requires travellers to be completely immunized against COVID-19 with an approved vaccine for the majority of European nations. Depending on the nation in question and your immunization history, additional testing requirements might be necessary.

Middle East

Depending on the destination, there are different travel requirements for the Middle East. For example, Dubai now demands that not vaccinated travellers submit to a negative PCR test upon arrival, and Qatar requires unvaccinated travellers to remain in hotel quarantine.

Asia’s countries have different travel regulations, just like the Middle East’s. For example, Thailand does not impose quarantine on travellers who are vaccinated, whereas Vietnam may demand testing upon arrival.

There may be more strict travel regulations for locations in Africa. Regardless of vaccination status, some nations, like Kenya, may require a negative pre-departure test and a rapid antigen test upon arrival.

The Americas entry requirements are also different. For example, the United States accepts visitors who are completely vaccinated and have a valid ESTA authorization, whereas Canada may demand additional testing for those who are not.
