Round the World Tickets: The Ultimate Guide (Updated 2024)

reddit world travel

Y ou've probably heard about round the world tickets, a one-stop shop approach to cross-continental flying. But let's be real: it's never been easier to book flight tickets yourself, and round the world tickets are pricey. So why do people book round the world tickets, and are they  actually worth the cost?

The quick answer is, it depends . If you're pressed for time, have a seriously fixed itinerary with many international stops to make, it can be cost-wise. However, if you have a whimsical, budget-conscious trip in mind, or are focusing on just one part of the world, there are cheaper options out there that you should know about  (like finding fares yourself on Skyscanner on Kiwi.com ).

So, here's everything you need to know about round the world tickets, followed by our DIY approach that could save you even more money!

How do Round The World tickets work?

Round the world (RTW) tickets are flight packages that let you visit a number of destinations around the world for one price. These tickets are offered by airline alliances like SkyTeam, Oneworld, and Star Alliance. All the flights in your itinerary must be served by airlines within the chosen alliance.

RTW tickets require you to select your destinations and departure dates in advance. This means you prepay for the pass and book all of your flights before your trip. Note: you don't have to actually fly “around the world” with these tickets , they're also sold as multi-city flights, continent-based travel, or by miles.

The perk of RTW tickets is the ability to book all flights at once at a discounted price, plus ensures a mass accumulation of frequent flyer miles since you'll only be flying partner airlines. You can even purchase part or all of your RTW ticket with relevant miles, where permitted.

How to book a round the world ticket

Round the world tickets can be purchased directly with airline alliances or via  travel agents .

Airline Alliances

  • OneWorld Alliance
  • Star Alliance

Each alliance offers an online trip planner that allows you to put in every stop of your itinerary and get a price quote. It also makes it easy to work around the restrictions of round the world tickets, warning you when your planned route doesn't meet the requirements. All alliances offer online booking, or you can call one of the participating alliance airlines directly.

Travel Agents

  • AirTreks (U.S. – our top choice & has 32+ years experience in RTW planning)
  • Liberty Travel (U.S.)
  • Flight Centre ( Australia , U.K. , Canada )
  • RoundAbout Travel (Australia)
  • Student Flights (Australia)
  • A travel agent local to you

Travel agents have exclusive access to flight deals, plus receive discounts accessible only via their IATA code. They also save a great deal of time and money whilst adhering to your budget and needs. Find an agency that specializes in round the world tickets, so they're aware of the restrictions and can secure the best price.

What are the restrictions and/or setbacks?

RTW tickets often more expensive than a DIY approach (covered later), especially given they exclude budget airlines. Furthermore, there are restrictions to follow, so ensure you've read the fine print. Such restrictions typically include:

  • A minimum number of flights to book (typically three), as well as a maximum
  • Flights usually must be within the same airline alliance. This can sometimes result in obscure stopovers to stay with partner alliances.
  • Restrictions on the direction of travel (e.g. East to West only) and/or requiring you to cross both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans at least once
  • All flights must end in the city you started from and connect from city-to-city (i.e. you can't fly into London, then take a train to fly out of Paris)
  • A minimum number of stopovers
  • Additional surcharges for itinerary changes and/or flying to certain destinations
  • Missing a flight in your itinerary could result in the remaining flights being cancelled, even if days or weeks away

Whew! Though there are many restrictions, most will come up when making your booking . Simply use the round the world ticket planners provided by each alliance, put in your desired destinations, and the options and costs will be presented automatically.

The alternative: book separate flights yourself

The value of a round the world ticket depends on the route you're taking and the flexibility needed. More often than not, you'll find it's cheaper, easier, and more flexible to book your own round the world trip online across several bookings using multi-destination flight search engines like Kiwi.com  and Skyscanner . You also can mix and match airlines, and aren't confined by the restrictions that accompany an actual RTW ticket.

Credit card points programs also allow multi-city flight bookings, effectively allowing you to book your own round the world trip via points or a combination of cash and points. You can readily rack up a significant amount of miles just by hitting the minimum spend within a set time. The Chase Sapphire Preferred is our top pick as a beginner card. On hitting its minimum spend, you can earn up to 60,000 points worth $750 – more than enough for an international flight .

Flight deal subscriptions like Scotts Cheap Flights compile discounted airfare to your inbox, based on the desired departure airports. Whilst this doesn't include RTW flights, this could help you cover some of the legs of your trip, as it has majorly discounted international flights departing the U.S. For those outside America, similar services exist in the U.K. ( Jack's Flight Club ) and Canada ( Next Departure ).

The only major drawbacks with booking a RTW ticket yourself is the time and patience needed to make the booking. Additionally, you may end up with frequent flyer miles spread across a variety of programs, without enough miles in any program to use them. Most likely though, you'll come out ahead financially doing it yourself.

How to book your own round the world trip

Kiwi.com  and Skyscanner are the two flight search engines we recommend for booking your own tickets for a round the world trip. They include budget airlines and let you search multi-destination flights, letting you see prices for your entire itinerary at once.

The key difference between the two is that Skyscanner prefers results from partner airlines , while Kiwi.com will always  mix and match airlines (including budget airlines) for the cheapest price . Either booking site can be beneficial depending on your trip, so to get the best price, be sure to compare results and follow these tips:

  • Experiment with  the order of your destinations for the best price. Just because a flight is shorter doesn't mean it will be cheaper.
  • Experiment with the  dates of each flight . This can be time consuming, but if you're dedicated, you can shave hundreds of dollars off your total cost by simply finding the cheapest dates for each flight.
  • Multi-city and  return flights are often better value than booking many one-way flights when they can all be fulfilled by the same airline/alliance. For example, Virgin Atlantic has routes from New York to London, London to Shanghai, and Shanghai to New York, so making one multi-city booking with this single airline will be cheaper than several individual bookings with different airlines.
  • Skyscanner prefers partner airlines that can fulfil the entire itinerary you submit, which doesn't always get you the best price on complex itineraries. So if you have a lot of destinations, split your searches into 3-4 destinations at a time . For example, instead of submitting New York > London  > Paris > Beijing > New York as a single search, try searching New York > London > Paris as one search, and Paris > Prague > Beijing > New York as a second search. You don't have to worry about this on Kiwi.com , which always mixes and matches airlines to get the best results.

So, what's the cheapest option?

In our tests, the DIY approach is always cheaper, but it depends on the kind of trip you're taking. Round the world tickets can cost anywhere from $1,500 USD to $20,000 USD . The price varies greatly, and depends on your departure point, number of flights, distance flown, continents flown to, and flight class.

On the other hand, regular flight ticket prices are all over the map, dependent mostly on supply and demand. Sometimes a flight across continents can be even cheaper than a flight within your own country. Since regular flight tickets include budget airlines , sale and error fares , and you can still take advantage of discounts with partner airlines,  booking your own flight tickets has always been cheaper for us .

The only way to know for sure is to compare. Use the links provided in this guide and see what gives you the best result!

A Thrifty Case Study: A Round the World Trip from New York City

As an example, let's find the best price for the following round the world trip:  New York City > London > Paris > Prague > Beijing > Hong Kong > New York City . We want to go in  April and May , and we are booking now in  January . We'll start on Tuesday, April 10, and schedule each consecutive flight for the following Tuesday.

Option 1: A round the world travel agent

reddit world travel

Booking with AirTreks also gives you a team with over 32 years of experience in RTW planning, all your tickets in one spot (instead of many confusing separate bookings), 24/7 support, and better routes (less layover time, more baggage, etc.) If you do find a cheaper fare yourself, let them know – AirTreks tells us they're confident they could beat it!

Option 2: A round the world ticket booked directly with airline alliances

Putting in the same itinerary into each of the airline alliances' round the world trip planner gives us the following totals:

  • OneWorld: $3,738.86 USD
  • SkyTeam: $3,904.28 USD
  • Star Alliance: $4,543.84 USD

Not exactly thrifty, and up to 3x the advertised price of the travel agent! True round the world tickets require strategic planning, so using a travel agent's expertise can save you time and money. But let's take a look at booking regular airline tickets yourself…

Oneworld

Option 3: Book your own tickets using Kiwi.com and Skyscanner

Using the Kiwi.com multicity search feature, we enter our full itinerary, and within minutes, we have a variety of options from $1,390 – $1,434 USD .

reddit world travel

As we mentioned, Skyscanner usually just shows results from  partner airlines that can fulfill a ticket for the entire route. This route is pretty complex, and it's unlikely one airline alliance could fulfill it all, so let's  break it up .

After half an hour of trying different combinations of multi-city and one-way searches, the cheapest combination I could find for these dates was

reddit world travel

  • New York City > London > Paris > Prague: $390 USD
  • Prague > Beijing: $283 USD
  • Beijing > Hong Kong: $119 USD
  • Hong Kong > New York City: $493 USD
  • TOTAL TRIP COST: $1,285 USD

This is the cheapest option, beating Kiwi.com by only $105. What's going on here? In short, trial and error. The first batch of airlines aren't partners, but Skyscanner sometimes lets you mix and match airlines by using Kiwi.com for booking. And although there are partner airlines to fulfill the rest of the route, Hong Kong Airlines is an independent budget airline with competitive pricing, so it ended up being cheaper to book the flights separately in order to include their fares.

You can take this even further by testing different dates in your itinerary, as well as the order of your flights. As you can see, the process can be time consuming, but a little time rewards you with hundreds or thousands of dollars saved!

Airport Round the World Ticket

What are the alternatives?

Regional flight passes.

While not a round the world ticket in itself, this type of flight pass might be more sensible for your trip, depending whether you'll be flying a lot in one region versus globally. For instance, if you are planning to take more flights around South America than across continents, then you may be better off investing in one of their regional passes (check our guide here ).

Some examples of regional flight passes include:

  • OneWorld single-continent passes: available for Africa, Asia, Japan, Australia & New Zealand, Malaysia, South America, Europe, North America, Middle East, South Asian Sub-Continent
  • OneWorld multi-continent passes: rather than flying all the way around the world, these passes let you fly in a circle around one smaller area of the world
  • SkyTeam regional passes : available for Asia & Southwest Pacific, Africa, Asia, Europe, Greater China, Russia, and USA & Canada
  • Independent airline passes in South America : these work within specific South American countries (check our comprehensive list and guide here )
  • Qantas Explorer pass : a flight pass for exploring Australia and New Zealand

Building your own stopover

A stopover – that is, an extended layover where you can actually leave the airport for 1 or more days or weeks – can be added for cheap or free to any trip, all by yourself. Our how-to guide here explains exactly how to do this.

Essentially, you find a flight fare that includes a layover, but instead of rushing to your connecting flight, you spend days or weeks in the layover destination, visiting 2 destinations for the price of 1. Whether you go round the world or not, it's a great way to squeeze more travel value out of your flight costs.

So, is a round the world ticket worth it?

In short, for most travellers, the answer is probably no. There are a certain set of criteria where it could be more cost-effective, and some travellers may prefer the ease of having all of their tickets booked in one pass anyway. However, the fixed timing, many restrictions, and high price are likely to be unappealing to those who are seeking a thriftier approach, especially when it's so easy to book yourself for less with Kiwi.com and Skyscanner .

The Thrifty Gist

  • Round the world tickets are usually pricier than self-booking, but offer peace of mind and a pre-set itinerary
  • A dedicated RTW agent such as AirTreks can save you a lot of time, with the added benefit of 24/7 support, having all of your flights in one place, established airlines with shorter routes, and over 32 years of experience in RTW planning. AirTreks tells us they're confident they could beat the other prices in this post, so if you find a cheaper fare yourself, let them know!
  • Round the world tickets can be booked with airline alliances or travel agents, while self-booking regular flight tickets can be booked using the multi-destination features of Skyscanner and Kiwi.com
  • Self-booking is usually the cheapest approach to a round the world trip, but can also be more tedious
  • Reasons to self-book include the abundance of available error/sale fares , budget airlines, the ease with which self-booking can be done, and that stopovers can easily be added to any trip

Skyteam RTW tickets are not available currently, and haven’t been since the start of COVID. The Star Alliance RTW business ticket I just booked was half the price of using the DIY method.

Reddit Is The Ultimate Travel Guide: How To Use It To Plan Your Next Trip

Brittany Levine Beckman

When my husband and I started planning a Hawaii vacation, we sat on the couch, laptops at the ready, our fingertips tap-dancing across our keyboards. We both knew exactly where to start: Reddit.

We divided and conquered. He scoured for dive sites and shops to check out. I looked for what else we should do when we weren't floating under the deep blue sea. That's how I discovered a farm that lets you milk a goat and an app that narrates your drive through a winding road known for beautiful views, but a treacherous climb.

Reddit lets you take travel planning a step further than most guidebooks, introducing you to locals or past visitors who will appraise your itinerary, offer unexpected suggestions, and provide up-to-date information. You can dig deep into specifics and learn whether to hike a certain trail in the rain, buy a certain SIM card at the airport, or avoid a bus line that doesn't work in the afternoons.

But you have to enjoy the hunt — and play by a few rules.

How to begin

Before you start asking people to share hidden gems in Paris or debate whether you should travel to New York or Portland for a long weekend, lurk a little. Check out the local subreddit of the place you want to go; there are often also tourism subreddits for specific locales. (For the uninitiated, subreddits are Reddit's topic-specific forums.)

My first stops for my Hawaii planning were subs focused on Maui and Hawaii visitors . I also searched "maui to do," "maui tips," and "maui hiking" from the search bar on Reddit's homepage. Reddit search leaves a lot to be desired, but it'll do if you have the patience to scroll for awhile. You may have better luck using Google to do a site search for Reddit and specific keywords.

Once you've done a bit of homework, go ahead and write your first post. But make sure to be specific. A big faux pas on travel-related posts is being too vague, said Lili Armstrong, a subreddit moderator. She's seen people post questions about what they should do in Asia with no details about which countries they were interested in, their budget, or their hobbies.

"For me, I really love museums, and if I say 'Hey, I'm going to be going to this city, what are some great museums?' There's gonna be someone else out there who loves museums, and because you gave that insight, they're gonna give you a very detailed post that you wouldn't have gotten if you hadn't said that," said the 33-year-old from Colorado.

And yes, travel-loving Redditors will write thorough responses. When Armstrong was planning a trip to Egypt, she posted a handful of questions to Reddit and received more than 30 detailed responses, from suggestions about what to do to cultural guidance. Before a recent weekend trip to Los Angeles, she shared where she was planning to stay and was warned that the traffic would be horrendous there so she picked another neighborhood.

She also looks at local subs for posts about weekly events like concerts, craft fairs, or farmer's markets.

A helpful supplement

Reddit can also supplement your other research. Faye Boyer, a 22-year-old from Georgia, likes to check out TripAdvisor and Expedia to find inexpensive places to stay, but she's skeptical of their rating and review systems. Once she finds somewhere she thinks may work, she'll write a post in a local sub asking if people have been there before or know anything about it.

"I don't normally trust those websites because if you see they have 4.2 stars, how many of those are actually authentic? How many of those are people who stayed there or employees who were told to write a good review," she explained.

A few years ago, Boyer was planning a trip to Ireland with her mother, and they were considering staying at a carriage house they'd found online. But the inn had very few reviews on other travel sites. When she asked Redditors if anyone had visited it before, she got enthusiastic responses.

"Everybody's like, 'yes, it's great, it's awesome,' and we went and stayed there and it really was," she said.

"One of the things I asked is: I would be a single female alone in a foreign country, how do I do this safely?"

Boyer is currently planning a return trip to Ireland, but this time she'll be traveling solo. She again went to Reddit and asked what route she should take, which hostels she should avoid, and how she could get around. She's also found the Ireland sub helpful for posting her itineraries so others can comment on whether they're overly ambitious or fill in any gaps.

"I was looking to see if anybody who's in Ireland could push me in a certain direction, so I knew I would get some of the best advice there. One of the things I asked is: I would be a single female alone in a foreign country, how do I do this safely? Is hitchhiking an option, is a bus an option? Everyone was like do not hitchhike."

While Armstrong, who also runs a travel blog , had tried using TripAdvisor forums, she found they weren't as active as Reddit. In addition to Reddit, the voracious planner also reads travel books and blogs.

I'm the same way. I tend to read about places to visit on a blog or news site and then search for specifics on Reddit. For example, I learned about that winding road I mentioned earlier, the Road to Hana, on another site, but it was on Reddit where I read about honking when rounding curves, where to get coconut ice cream along the way, and that we should download an app to narrate our journey.

A few years ago, I traveled to Iceland with my husband. We bought a Lonely Planet book but also turned to Reddit for advice. That's how we found a post listing free hot springs. At one of them, which was about a 10-minute walk off the road and near a glistening river, we were the only ones. Someone had also linked to a map they made of their trip around the country, which we downloaded through Maps.me to use offline during our weeklong road trip.

Giving back

Many travel junkies — I'm one of them — will shower anyone who'll listen with a stream of recommendations. Reddit's like that, but to the nth degree. Travel-related and location-related subs are filled with people who want to learn and share their experiences. You can lurk on Reddit, but you're expected to join in, too.

When Boyer saw someone seeking advice on where to ask their girlfriend to marry them while visiting Ireland, she jumped at the chance to suggest some of her favorite vistas, parks, and gardens, adding photos and weather information.

"People are very generous," she said. "If you ask a genuine question, they’re not gonna beat you down for it."

"Our communities really want to help you."

While most respondents are helpful, this is the internet, and every now and then someone may be snarky or trolly. Ignore it and don't take it personally. For every irksome poster, there are plenty more who actually want to help.

Reddit's travel troves aren't just for extremely-online millennials, either. Many of the regulars in the sub Armstrong moderates are older than her, and love to needle her for it. While a separate solo travel sub skews younger, she's also seen people ask about traveling on their own in their 50s and 60s and whether they could still stay at a hostel in their 40s. To which, she opined, of course you can.

If you savor spending hours panning for travel gold — and are comfortable talking to faceless strangers, then add Reddit to your vacation research repertoire. As Armstrong said, "our communities really want to help you."

So How Much Does A Round The World Trip Actually Cost?

Zach Johnston

Has the travel bug bit you yet ? Do you read all the articles about the people tossing in the towel at work and hitting the road ? Do you think ‘f*ck it! I’mma do it!’ and then have the cold hard reality of cost wash away all those wanderlust dreams ? You’re not alone .

Traveling costs money . Transportation, visas, shots, insurance, beds, food, doing almost anything of interest all add up really quick when you’re on the road. It can be daunting ; a deal breaker. The money has to be there . No one, ever, travels for completely free (even the people who advertise their free-wheeling jaunts around the world are often churning those free flights from tens-of-thousands already spent on previous flights and credit card purchases).

One Redditor cut through all the wanderlust and cut right to the chase by asking, “I know there is a wealth of individual trips on here but thought it would be great to get a general conversation going on the subject. What were your costs…?”

Reddit nomads responded with honest reflections and raw numbers about how much they’re actually spending on the road, and how they can pull off dropping $20,000 (a very rough average from responders) on a round the world trip.

Travelers started by responding with straight talk about how much they spent per day and where that money went.

My wife and I did Switzerland, Croatia, Italy, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, and Mexico for 8 months. I believe we spent about 200 Canadian (approx. $150 USD) per day between the two of us. I believe we spent $6000 on activities in NZ. Even the cheap countries were expensive because we just did cooler stuff. Cranked out 70 scuba dives for example.

Another traveler spent nearly a year on the road and came close to spending what is a year’s salary for some.

In 2009/2010, I traveled for 11 months. SE Asia & China & Nepal/India & Egypt/Syria/Lebanon/Jordan/Israel & Kenya/Rwanda/Uganda/South Africa/Mozambique. Great trip and did most of it solo as well. I don’t remember exactly how much it cost and I don’t know if I ever really full accounted for everything but I think it came out to around 25,000 Canadian (approx. $19,000 USD).

The $20,000 price tag became the mean number throughout the posts . The real variation came in where it was that money was coming from and what costs could be avoided.

I did a 333-day RTW trip two years ago. Total of 26 non-US countries. Cost was approximately $20k/person (went with my girlfriend-at-the-time, now ex). That’s all-inclusive, with flights and also some pre-trip supplies like a new laptop and travel packs. One big cost-saver was using travel hacking to accumulate miles before the trip (see /r/churning). The main tickets were round-the-world tickets with 15 international stops. It was just $550/person, which was purely taxes and airport fees – the rest was paid on points. I was also fortunate enough to have a flexible job that let me work while on-the-go. I worked 10-15 hours/week doing programming work. This was enough income that I barely had to dip into savings.

There was a fair amount of travelers pointing out their daily totals — which is super enticing when you think about a number that’s very low. But even for these travelers their yearly total is still $22,958.50…

I’ve been traveling non-stop for 2 years now. My GF Just finished our year-end expense report and we came to a total of $31.45 per day including all planes/trains/hotels/food… everything. We didn’t live cheaply, we eat out three times a day stay in 2-3 star hotels and go on adventures twice a week. It’s a matter of using Credit Card miles wisely, hotel deals/ points, couchsurfing occasionally and choosing budget friendly locations. We especially loved eastern europe and south east asia for their mix of ease and value. It doesn’t take much money to do this if you’re smart, but it does take work to find the best deals and stay this low.

It became clear that, as with all things, you get what you are willing to pay for .

I did 6 months in 2008. Went through Africa, the Middle East, a little bit in Europe, southeast Asia, and New Zealand. I think it was around $25,000. It could have been done cheaper, but I splurged on some things. I don’t want to discourage someone who wants to do a similar trip but has nowhere near the savings.

There was a telling direct response positing what it is you can actually do in some places if you’re only spending pennies per day to be there…

You make an important point. I met a bunch of people who loved to brag about how cheaply they had done it. I met a guy in Zambia who loved to tell everyone he was living on less than $10 a day. Good for him but he isn’t seeing or doing anything other than eating bread and smoking weed.

A little advice and price check was offered from someone currently on the road and how they were making it happen — the last paragraph being a crucial morsel of information.

We’re 8 months in to 13 months total. So far (in order) – Japan, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, Costa Rica (friend wedding), Thailand, Philippines, Bali, Singapore, Kuala Lampur, Thailand again, and now currently in Vietnam. We have just a couple more weeks, then headed to Dubai and finishing up our last few months in Europe. We are on a $175/day budget. That does NOT include airfare, buses, or trains that get us from one place to another. I spent A LOT of time researching budget before leaving. This is definitely a higher budget than most from what I research but so far we are 8 months in and very close to our budget. For some perspective, my wife and I are 31 and 32. We had saved for the trip but I also have a side business that has been taking off so we’re making solid money on the road. I also had a high paying job prior to leaving.

Finally one intrepid traveler broke down his philosophy for pricing out his trips section by section . He also points out that our tastes and desires in why we travel in the first place change as we grow and mature. Overall, it’s a good reminder of where and how to start.

A month in Europe as a 19 year old cost me less than $1000 because I would sleep anywhere and was more about partying than even going to the Louvre. I literally went to Paris and didn’t even go to the Louvre cause I didn’t care. I would rather drink a beer in front of the Eiffel Tower than climb the thing back then. A month in Europe as an adult though costs me at least twice that. I’m going to be heading out for a 6 month trip through East Africa and into Jordan and Israel and my budget is about $35,000 for 2 of us. If I compare this to my last trip to Africa though where I spend about 1/3 of that though I’m planning on about 5 times as many activities. We’re going to do basically whatever we want and that part of the world has expensive activities. First things first you gotta figure out airfare. Google’s flight matrix is the best way to do this but also subscribe to some of the newsletters out there from people who do some serious airfare deal hunting. Next you gotta figure out your visa costs. You’re most likely going to want to leave home with this in cash, some of your visas already in your passport, plus some passport photos. You might want to factor in the cost of your passport as well. If you’re a dual national factor in the costs to renew both and protip it’s way cheaper to renew a passport in the country of origin. I just renewed my European passport in South America and it cost 5x as much. It would have made more sense to renew the passport 2 years early. Then start figuring that you’re going to need on average at least $50-$60/day for accommodation, food, and transportation. The world is a big place so in some places this will also take care of activities but in others you gotta tack on an activities budget. If you want to scuba dive anywhere in the world that’s going to cost you $100 a day for example and an open water course is $400. You might need to factor in immunizations. In the US they rob you blind for some of the required shots. Yellow fever almost cost me ~$270 but the pharmacist who gave me the shot fudged it somehow with my insurance company. I found out later though that you can get the shot for free in many places. My girlfriend got it for free at the Bogota Airport for example. Anti-malarials I’ve always found to be cheaper on route. Basically everything is cheaper outside of the US for healthcare so watch your costs here. Travel insurance is another expense. It’s totally worth it. You’re almost guaranteed to use it on a long trip. I’ve needed it every time but in most cases was too lazy to file the paperwork for $100 but on this last trip I did since the bill was more than my premium and it made sense. There’s so many variables. I probably wouldn’t even begin to look at a RTW trip without having at least a couple thousand dollars for airfare, a thousand dollars for visas, the funds for travel insurance, whatever it costs you for a physical and immunizations, plus $50/day. I then add on funds for the big ticket activities. Then you should have a slush fund for emergencies. This might just mean having a credit card with you. At least for me I generally have a budget but come home with money left over. Some countries, like Laos, will cost you less than $1000 per month. Others like Norway will cost you 3 times that.

Ironically, he could have gotten into the Louvre for free when he was 19…

World Nomads Travel Insurance Review: Is it Worth The Cost?

Meg Lee

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

What does World Nomads travel insurance cover?

World nomads single trip plans, which world nomads insurance plan is best for me, can you buy world nomads travel insurance online, what isn’t covered, is world nomads insurance worth it.

World Nomads

  • Travelers can extend coverage mid-trip.
  • The standard plan covers up to $300,000 in emergency evacuation costs.
  • Plans automatically cover 200+ adventurous activities.
  • No Cancel For Any Reason upgrades are available.
  • No pre-existing medical condition waivers are available.

World Nomads offers the Standard and Explorer travel insurance plans and excels in sports/activity related travel insurance coverage while offering solid trip delay, baggage delay and lost luggage protections.

The provider offers insurance plans for travel to nearly any country and is available to residents of most countries. In the U.S., World Nomads policies are administered by Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, a Fortune 100 company offering various types of insurance and financial products.

Here’s what you need to know about World Nomads travel insurance to help you decide which plan makes sense for your trip.

Before you buy a plan, check to see if you already have coverage through a premium travel credit card , and if so, verify whether those limits are sufficient. If they are, standalone emergency medical coverage may be adequate as the travel insurance provided by credit card often excludes healthcare expenses or offers a low limit (the Chase Sapphire Reserve® is one of the few cards to offer emergency medical and dental, however coverage is capped at $2,500 ).

World Nomads offers different coverage levels for its travel insurance options, but both qualify as single trip plans.

Single trip plans are designed for individuals who are leaving their home, visiting another destination (or destinations) and returning home. These travel insurance plans are the most comprehensive and provide benefits like trip cancellation, trip interruption and medical coverage.

World Nomads is unique amongst other providers as it is a good fit for adventurous travelers. Its plans automatically include coverage for over 200+ activities, including skiing , rafting, backpacking and bouldering. Note that extreme sports are not covered.

All plans include trip protection, emergency medical insurance , emergency evacuation and coverage to protect your gear.

World Nomads offers two plans, with the latter offering higher limits and additional adventure sports coverage.

The plans can be purchased for trip duration up to a maximum 180 days, and you can extend your coverage mid-trip. The price of the policy will depend on the duration of the trip and the countries that you're visiting.

To see the cost of the insurance plan, you will need to input your trip details, your age and state of residence. Unlike many other insurers, you do not need to include the cost of your trip when searching for a World Nomads policy because trip cancellation and interruption benefits are capped at a specific dollar amount rather than a percentage of money spent.

We input a sample trip of a two-week vacation in December 2023 to Italy by a 30-year-old from Illinois.

World Nomads single trip plan cost

Here are some example World Nomads insurance costs based on our example trip.

world nomads travel insurance costs

Standard Plan

The Standard Plan ($86) is a good choice for those who are satisfied with trip cancellation and interruption coverage of $2,500 or less, do not need rental car damage protection, find the limits to be sufficient and do not need coverage for certain adventure sports.

However, this plan still shines in sports coverage, covering activities like wind surfing and bungee jumping, which are seldom covered by travel insurance companies. A full list of covered sports by plan type is available on the World Nomads site.

Explorer Plan

The Explorer Plan ($155) includes all the benefits of the Standard Plan along with higher limits, rental car damage insurance (in the states where it is available) and adventure sports (e.g., skydiving, heli skiing) coverage.

This choice is also good for those whose trips costs less than $10,000 as this is the maximum trip cancellation and interruption protection.

A Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) upgrade is not offered by World Nomads. If this option is a must, look for a travel insurance company that offers CFAR.

Selecting the appropriate plan for your travels involves understanding which coverage you’d like on the trip.

If you have a premium travel card : If you have a premium travel card that offers an adequate amount of trip cancellation / interruption benefits, you may only need to get a standalone emergency health care policy. For example, The Business Platinum Card® from American Express offers $10,000 per trip and $20,000 per year in trip cancellation benefits . Terms apply. Only the Explorer Plan ($10,000) has a comparable level of trip cancellation protection. Terms apply.

If the coverage provided by your card isn’t adequate or applicable: If you don’t have a premium travel credit card , the coverage provided by your card isn’t sufficient or you didn’t use the card to pay for your trip, then a comprehensive insurance plan like the Standard or Explorer plan might be the best choice.

More chill travelers: If you don’t need adventure sports coverage and your trip costs less than $2,500 (or you already have trip cancellation / interruption benefits from your credit card), the Standard Plan would be sufficient.

Trip insurance plans are filled with exclusions, so you’ll want to pay attention to what is and isn’t covered so there aren’t any surprises. Here are some exclusions you can expect from World Nomads:

Pre-existing conditions: If you’ve sought treatment for any illness or condition in the 90-day period preceding the start of the policy and then seek medical care for the same illness/condition, you may be on the hook for the bill since World Nomads does not cover pre-existing conditions.

Intentional acts: Losses sustained from self-harm, intoxication, drug use or criminal activity are not covered.

Travelers with pre-existing conditions might consider policies from providers like Travel Guard by AIG or Allianz .

World Nomads has been offering insurance since 2002. The company is well established and offers two single trip travel insurance policies to fit many different needs.

Both plans offered by World Nomads include trip cancellation, interruption and delays; emergency accident and sickness medical expenses; emergency evacuation; repatriation of remains; non-medical emergency transportation; baggage and personal effects; baggage delay for outward journeys; rental car damage in certain locations; accidental death and dismemberment; Generali Global Assistance; and adventure sports and activities.

World Nomads does not include Cancel For Any Reason coverage, even as an add on.

You will need to file a claim with the insurer after you’ve incurred costs related to a covered expense. If the claim is approved, you will receive a reimbursement. In some instances, such as baggage delay, World Nomads pays you a fixed amount per day rather than 100% coverage for costs incurred.

World Nomads offers some good travel insurance plans for adventurous, single-trip travelers. This is also a good fit for anyone who is uncertain about their trip length (since you can add coverage during your vacation).

Insurance can be extended mid-trip.

You can insure trips up to 180 days in length — which makes it an attractive option for digital nomads .

Adventure sports coverage is more robust than many other plans.

Simple choice of two plans.

Extreme sports are not covered.

There is no annual plan option. A policy ends once you return within 100 miles of home, even if you’re only home briefly as part of a long trip.

Regardless of your trip cost, trip cancellation and interruption coverage is capped at a dollar amount rather than as a percentage of trip cost. The Standard Plan and Explorer Plan cover trips up to $2,500 and $10,000, respectively. If you’re going on a more expensive trip, you won’t be able to protect the entire trip.

You must be 70 years old or younger to qualify for coverage.

Personal Details Of Thousands Of Qantas Passengers Exposed Due To Glitch

Qantas recommended that customers log out and log in to their Qantas Frequent Flyer account

Personal details of thousands of Qantas customers were made public on Wednesday via the airline's app, in a major glitch. Many frequent fliers posted on social media that they were seeing other passengers' names, accounts, flight plans, points, and boarding passes, Guardian reported.

One user wrote on X, ''Hey @Qantas, I'm pretty sure whatever app issue this warning is about is not entirely resolved because every time I refresh I've got someone else's name, point balance, and status…''

A Qantas spokesperson said current investigations indicate that it was caused by a technology issue and may have been related to recent system changes.

''We apologise to customers impacted by the issue with the Qantas app this morning, which has now been resolved. Current investigations indicate that it was caused by a technology issue and may have been related to recent system changes. At this stage, there is no indication of a cyber security incident,'' the carrier said in a statement.

''The issue was isolated to the Qantas app with some frequent flyers able to see the travel information of other customers, including name, upcoming flight details, points balance and status. No further personal or financial information was shared and customers would not have been able to transfer or use the Qantas Points of other frequent flyers. We're not aware of any customers travelling with incorrect boarding passes,'' the statement added.

In a late afternoon announcement, the airline said the Qantas app was ''currently stable and operating normally following an issue with its homepage today.''

Among those able to access the pre-sale are American Express cardholders. Starting on Friday, May 3 at 12 p.m. ET, tickets will go on sale to the general public on Ticketmaster. Historically, Billie Eilish tickets are snapped up pretty quickly, so fans will want to be waiting in the queue as soon as the sale starts.

Listings for Eilish's shows through resale websites like StubHub and Vivid Seats popped up before the pre-sale started. People are welcome to browse those sites as well, although those tickets are not guaranteed yet.

For the "Hit Me Hard and Soft" world tour, tickets on many dates are not eligible for transfer outside the official Ticketmaster Face Value Exchange program. States like New York, Illinois, Colorado, Virginia, Utah, and Connecticut have laws that don't limit ticket resale, so people can purchase tickets through resale websites for concerts in those regions. For shows outside those states, you'll probably want to stick with buying from the Ticketmaster Face Value Exchange if you cannot get your hands on original standard tickets during the initial sale.

How much are Billie Eilish tickets?

Original Billie Eilish ticket prices vary depending on the date and location within a venue. While Ticketmaster hasn't listed any prices yet, the Heritage Bank Center website (which will host Eilish's Cincinnati, Ohio show on November 8) shared a range of prices. According to the venue's website , tickets start at $59.50 and go up to $499.50.

25 People 'Too Smart' For This World

Posted: May 2, 2024 | Last updated: May 2, 2024

<p>Some people just don't know how to interact with the rest of the world, because they are too smart for it, of course. Some people put everything on their intelligence, and while it's good to wanna learn more and pursue knowledge, some people are a little too loud about it. It's pretty cringeworthy to see someone brag about their IQ to the world. Furthermore, it's even worse to see them brag about how smart they are, then subsequently put down everyone else who is so much dumber and plainer than them.</p> <p>It's just so hard for these self-proclaimed geniuses to live in a world full of normal people. Reddit's /r/iamverysmart is a subreddit dedicated to collecting embarrassing accounts of these 'very smart' people making sure everyone else knows how smart they are. Whether these folks are truly as intelligent as they make themselves out to be or not… who knows?</p>
