Driving from California to Georgia: Top 5 Places to Visit

map, tourist, frugal road trip tips

Driving From California to Georgia

Driving from California to Georgia or Georgia to California is something I have a lot of experience with. I was one of those kids in school who had not grown up next door to my classmates because my parents decided to move our family across the country.

At the time, I hated the process of it because what kid likes being the new kid? Especially when nearly everyone else used regional slang words that I was not familiar with.

I was born in California in a small city called Bakersfield but moved to Atlanta, Georgia around the age of seven. The culture between the two places is extremely different, and a fair amount of people in Georgia speak with a deep accent.

As I got older, I grew to love the city of Atlanta, and I now consider it my home. Now that I am an adult, Atlanta is what I claim in terms of my place of residence, but I still have family in Bakersfield, so I visit there frequently and in some ways, I consider it home too.

Over the years of commuting to and from Atlanta and Bakersfield by plane, bus, and car, I have visited a good number of cities throughout the journey.

Now, if you are flying between the two states, it can take only four or five hours to arrive, but if you are driving, it can take up to 32 hours. Just make sure you take your time to arrive safely, and practice defensive driving. If someone else causes a wreck somewhere along the way and you need help recovering damages, you can contact a car crash attorney .

Spending a day and a half inside of a car sounds extremely daunting, but if you pace yourself and make pit-stops along the way, the journey can turn into an amazing road trip. It can even be cost-efficient if you can find cheap insurance in Fresno, California .

From my experience, here are five of the best places to visit while driving from California to Georgia.

Driving from California to Georgia, pier 39, San Francisco

Pier 39 in San Francisco, California

Pier 39 is a shopping center and frequently visited tourist attraction in San Francisco. It is built on a pier on the coast of the city. Since it is built on a pier, the views are absolutely breathtaking.

While shopping, playing in the arcade, or enjoying various kinds of food at cheap prices, you will be looking out at blue waters and mountain ridges.

What makes Pier 39 one of the most exhilarating places for me is the fact that it has a great view of the infamous Alcatraz prison.

If you are standing in the right spot on a clear day, you can look out and see the historical prison. Alcatraz is a prison located on the secluded island of the same name. This prison was a maximum-security prison that housed some of the most dangerous individuals.

It is rumored that the prison closed because of the disappearance of Frank Morris and the Anglin Brothers. You may have seen the movie “The Great Escape” which is based on the attempt of these men to break out of Alcatraz.

If you are feeling adventurous during your travels, visiting the prison on a tour can be a thrilling experience, especially if you do the haunted night tour.

The Alamo, Living in San Antionio

The Alamo in San Antonio, Texas

If you are taking this trip solo and happen to be doing so while riding a motorcycle, you can ride down Route 66 and see some hot spots that are popular on this highway.

Route 66 stretched from California to Chicago, crossing over eight states total. One of those states is Texas, where the Alamo is located.

The Alamo is considered to be at the heart of San Antonio and is a historic landmark because it was an important battle for Texans fighting for Independence from Mexico. The architect of the monument is also worth seeing face to face.

Aside from this historical monument, you can also visit the riverwalk. The riverwalk is also a tourist hotspot because its style embodies the essence of Venice, Italy which can be seen most clearly in the riverboat rides in between elongated buildings.

Driving from California to Georgia, Beale Street, Memphis, Tennessee

Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee

While San Antonio’s riverwalk is reminiscent of Venice, Italy, Beale Street in Memphis embodies the essence of black culture and entrepreneurship.

Beale Street was the district for black citizens in Memphis where clubs, restaurants, and shops were opened and run by African Americans.

Many people visit Beale Street for the food and the music, as it is known as being one of the best places for blues music in America.

While visiting Beale Street, you can also visit the Civil Rights Museum, Memphis Rock ‘N’ Soul Museum, Hard Rock Cafe, Memphis Music Record Shop, and other attractions that are steps away.

driving from California to Georgia, new Orleans, louisiana, swamp

Cajun Swamp Tour in New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans, Louisiana is most famous for its yearly Mardi Gras festival. The festival lasts for about a weekend and consists of parades, parties, live music, bands, dancing in the streets, and other events that locals throw during the festival.

Unless you are making your New Orleans pit stop during Mardi Gras, you can visit the French quarter just for the sake of experiencing the culture.

The city is best known for its jazz and cajun style cuisine. In addition to those attractions, they have various swamp tours that you can take. The city of New Orleans is a lively city, so there is always a fun place to go to enjoy music and great food.

World of coca-cola, atlanta, georgia

World of Coke in Atlanta, Georgia

Before you reach the downtown of the city of Atlanta, you can make a pit stop to the Blue Ridge Mountains, find a nice campground, and enjoy mountain views.

The Blue Ridge mountains are not considered one of the best places to camp, but it is a great place to unwind and enjoy nature.

As you come down the mountain and make your way into the city of Atlanta, you will find there are various attractions within the downtown area.

Within the same few blocks, you can visit the Georgia Aquarium, Atlanta History Center, MLK Center and museum, and the World of Coke.

Atlanta is known for its Southern hospitality, Southern cooking, and diverse musical heritage, so it will not be hard for you to find a good bar with some good wings. It’s the perfect ending to a three day tour driving from California to Georgia.

Cross Country Road Trip – California to Georgia

road trip

After selling most of what we owned we packed up everything that was left into our truck and hit the road! We absolutely love San Diego but are excited to take some time off from the 9 to 5 to travel full time. We much prefer planes to driving but we decided to spread it out over 10 days to do a cross country road trip the right way.

Day 1: San Diego to the Grand Canyon and then up to Page, Arizona

We didn’t plan accordingly for the time change and sunset time so we left San Diego around 5am and headed for the Grand Canyon. We were planning on having one last delicious acai bowl from The Mad Beet but unfortunately we did not have time. We stopped on Route 66 for a bit to really get the USA road trip feel. It was pretty touristy and has definitely seen better days, but it was a fun stop nonetheless. I downloaded an app,  Roadside America , which shows you where cheesy stops are located along the way, but there were in-app purchases to see every state’s attractions so I only downloaded the SouthWest. For a cheesy Americana feel, be sure to stop at  The Roadkill Cafe . We didn’t eat here but bought some funny gifts at the gift shop.

Read about our amazing Grand Canyon experience here.

After visiting the Grand Canyon we drove 2 brutal hours to Page, Arizona so we could get an early start the next day. We stayed at the Best Western Plus at Lake Powell which was nice and included free breakfast.

Day 2: Page, Arizona to Zion National Park in Utah

We woke up early in Page to head to Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend before departing to Zion. Northern Arizona is gorgeous! The canyon colors are unreal.

Read about our awesome tour of Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend here.

Day 3: Spent the day at Zion National Park

Zion National Park is hands down the prettiest place we’ve ever been. We hiked all day and camped under the stars at our adorable campsite.

Read more about our incredible Zion trip here.

Day 4: Zion to Denver with a pit stop at Bryce Canyon National Park

After an incredible two days in Zion we were still in the hiking mood so we stopped by Bryce Canyon. We didn’t have much time so we did the Navajo Loop Trail. This is the best way to see the most of Bryce with the least amount of time. The rock formations are super cool and we got to see them in all three stages of erosion.

bryce canyon Cross Country Road Trip

We spent about 2 hours at Bryce Canyon before heading to Denver (another brutal drive) to stay with our friend, Ryan. Somewhere in the middle of Utah we got stuck in a cattle traffic jam! You cant make this stuff up.

Day 5: Spent the day in Denver

We watched some Georgia football at Park Burger Rino and went to a Halloween party. We also stopped by 10 Barrel Brewing for a tasting and had some cocktails at the funky Millers and Rossi art bar . This one reminded us of Fábrica de Arte Cubano.

Day 6: Denver to Lincoln, Nebraska with a pit stop in Fort Collins

We stopped in Fort Collins to visit Grant’s Aunt Nikki and Uncle Al and then we headed to Lincoln (not too bad of a drive, despite horrible food options) to stay with our friend, Alexis.

Day 7: Spent the day in Lincoln

We shopped and ate our way through Lincoln. Believe it or not, Lincoln knows Indian food! The Oven is a must eat and after dinner head over to The Other Room, a speakeasy with delicious cocktails and a cozy living room feel.

Day 8: Lincoln to St. Louis with a pit stop in Kansas City, Kansas

We had to stop in Kansas City for delicious BBQ at the highly awarded  Joe’s Kansas City BBQ . It is literally in a gas station but oh so good. Anthony Bourdain recommended and Davises approved. Seriously the best ribs ever (and we have tried a lot!) We quickly figured out that Kansas City is one city split between Kansas and Missouri, who knew!?

Joe's KC BBQ

We also passed through Iowa and Illinois on our way. On Halloween night we were in St. Louis and had some surprisingly good food. We loved Taste , a romantic spot for tapas and cocktails.

St. Louis Arch

Day 9: St. Louis to Nashville

This one was an easy drive. We went through Kentucky which was so beautiful with the fall leaves changing. Then we headed to Nashville for music, food, and to stay with our friend Jeff.

Read about all of Nashville’s amazing food here.

Day 10: Nashville to Hiram, Georgia

Before departing Nashville we visited the Country Music Hall of Fame  which had an amazing Loretta Lynn exhibit (my country music idol) and then headed the 4 short hours to our final destination of the cross country road trip, Hiram, which is my hometown.

We’ll be spending November with friends and family in Georgia and Florida before embarking on our big adventure!

Georgia to California: Cross-Country Road Trip Itinerary

road trip from california to georgia

On November 1st, my best friend and I drove across the country and created a detailed itinerary for you road-trip loving and adventure seeking humans.

DAY 1 : Atlanta, GA – Alabama – Mississippi – Tennessee – North Little Rock, AR

The first 2 days of this drive were definitely not as scenic as the last two. Flat highway and Georgia trees covered most of this first day. Since Memphis was too close to stop in for the night, considering we wanted to make it to CA in 4 days, we decided to stop there for lunch! We yelped and found a delicious local sandwich place called Pops Deli that was known for its Philly Cheesesteaks and a touch of southern love. It was a quick drive off of the Interstate and had plenty of grass for us to let the pups out of the car.

The AR state line we crossed was over a river and the sign was a pretty sight in a beautiful bridge. Throughout this drive we chatted and listened to the perfect playlist that Halle & her husband, Matt, made together. I will list some of the artists from this playlist at the end of the post.

We arrived at our cute North Little Rock Airbnb around 6 that night and headed out for some yummy Mexican and margs that night (however the restaurant was not memorable enough for us to remember it’s name). The apartment was perfect for our dogs and was in walking distance from a great view of Little Rock.

DAY 2 : North Little Rock, AR – Oklahoma – Amarillo, TX

road trip from california to georgia

We unfortunately got rear ended the night we arrived into Little Rock, which put a slight damper on our exploration of Little Rock. But with a little help from Starbucks, and the cutest local diner called  Littlefields Cafe , we got everything sorted out with insurance and got on the road around noon. In order to pass the time we looked up fun bff questions to ask each other and to keep our minds off of the driving! We were excited to get to Amarillo and see what they had to offer, but since we got a late start, we had to leave that for the next morning. Not to mention we were pretty exhausted.  We got to our Amarillo Airbnb and it was the cutest home with absolutely everything we needed. It had separate bedrooms and they even left complimentary refreshments for us. Including wine and beer 😉 We were grateful for the space for the dogs and for their hospitality. This Airbnb was Halleson’s favorite from the trip!

DAY 3 : Amarillo, TX – New Mexico – Flagstaff, AZ

We woke up refreshed and headed to Target in Amarillo for some necessities. It isn’t a roadtrip without a Target run, amiright? Our first excursion from the road was to the Cadillac Ranch, which was just minutes from our Amarillo Airbnb. It was windy and chilly but an exciting stop for us.

We then got back on the road towards Arizona and the Painted Desert/Petrified Forrest National Park. Our indie playlist was perfect for this desert ride and we enjoyed the scenery pretty much the entire drive. We asked each other more questions, talked a bunch, and took in the world that was passing by us at 100 MPH (sorry Mom).

We got to the Painted Desert in the knick of time – only an hour to spare. And we used every second of it! We arrived at the portion of the national park that was deemed “The Painted Desert” and got out and began to explore. Halleson started climbing in and I was hesitant, but soon followed her. We got some incredible shots and it was really a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

road trip from california to georgia

We got to Flagstaff once it was already pitch black outside, which led to us being super sketched out by our Flagstaff Airbnb because it was a ranch home and the drive up was unpaved and very poorly lit. In the daylight however, this Airbnb was absolutely stunning. The view from the porch took my breath away and it felt like we had been transported to a scene from a movie. It was my favorite from the trip!

Once we had arrived at the ranch and unloaded the dogs, we went out to find food. While I was attending to the dogs, Halle was looking up places to eat and reading over recommendations from our host. We decided on a place called Diablo Burgers and wow, we were in for a treat. We got there and the bartender told us that it was shared seating aka you sit where you can and it doesn’t matter who is next to you! A cool concept that required a little too much socializing for our worn out minds, but again, a super cool concept. These ginormous, mouth watering burgers were served on english muffins with the most fresh and delightfully seasoned french fries I had ever consumed. It was not a cheap stop for dinner, but WOW was it worth it. It was named USA Today’s best burger in Arizona for a reason. My mouth is watering as I am writing this and remembering how delicious it was. Once we finished at Diablo’s, we wandered around a little shopping area in Downtown Flagstaff and stumbled upon a shop called PJ Chilcottage and it was the perfect mix of handmade items and Flagstaff souvenirs that were not super mainstream.

DAY 4 : Flagstaff, AZ – Newport Beach, Californa

The morning of the 4th day, we were ready to hit the road and see the Grand Canyon. We made a pit stop at a cute, cozy coffee shop called Late for the Train and grabbed our morning fuel. We began to drive towards the Grand Canyon and we drove through national park upon national park, admiring the beauty that surrounded us. Looking back, I wish that we would have stopped to capture the huge trees and beautiful mountains that were certainly picturesque, but I think that there are some things that are meant to just be experienced.

road trip from california to georgia

We arrived at the Grand Canyon, parked the car, and headed to the South Rim. It is indescribable how beautiful the view is. Pictures don’t do it complete justice, but we sure tried.

road trip from california to georgia

After our stop at the Grand Canyon that ended way too quickly, we got back into the car and settled in for the remainder of our trip. Newport had been a far off idea when we started, and we were almost there! In order to save time and make up for the time we had spent at the Grand Canyon, we didn’t stop much on the last day. Except for when we were almost out of gas and there was no gas station in sight so we had to stop at the nearest one and it was FIVE DOLLARS A GALLON. Yup, you read that right. It was pretty crazy.

We arrived in Newport Beach that night and Halleson helped me settle into my new home! It was a whirlwind of a trip, and I would go back to the beginning in a heartbeat.

I’m planning on moving to California to Georgia and would love to ask you come questions!

Loved the post!

So glad you loved it! You can DM me on insta @MadisonCrowley or shoot me an email at [email protected] 😊

Hello. I enjoyed the story also. I too am looking to relocate to California from Ga and intend on driving to Cali mid November. We would love to stop by the Grand Canyon as well. Please share the timing it took you’ll to make the travel and did you’ll book in advance for the several Airbnb’s? I was thinking on locating Military bases along the way for a night over (as I am am Army retiree) thanks

Hi there! It took us about 4 days and yes we booked the Airbnb’s in advance! It was a fantastic trip that I suggest to anyone. Looking up Military bases sounds like an awesome alternative as well.

So glad you loved the blog post, best of luck during your travels!

My husband and I are moving from Georgia to California too. We are leaving after Thanksgiving. Email me at [email protected] .

This is great to hear! I wish you the best of luck on your move! Let me know if there are any questions that I can help you with.

Loved your blog. We’re planning a round trip car trip with our dog from Georgia to California soon, too. Could you please send me the details of the Airbnb’s you stayed at? They all sounded great. Thanks in advance.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate this 🙂 Each of the Airbnb’s we stayed at are linked in this blog post. You can click each of the titles and it will take you to each individual Airbnb!

Would you suggest this trip as opposed to a European vacation for my high school graduate? I am curious as to what you think would be the most fun for a kid who isn’t into museums!

Hi Leigh! Thank you so much for stopping by my blog and thank you for your question! I have been on this trip, obviously, and on a European vacation and I would 100% recommend going on the European vacation over this. This is something that you can do whenever, for less money, with your friends, much easier than going to Europe. Europe is definitely a once in a lifetime experience, and if your parents are offering to gift you that trip for your high school graduation, I would definitely accept that from them. You can fit so much into a European adventure and I think that will be an incredible experience for you.

Thanks so much for reaching out! Can’t wait to hear what you decide 🙂

Road Trip from Atlanta to Los Angeles

If you are looking for the ultimate cross-country adventure across several states, major cities, stunning parks and incredible landmarks, then the epic drive from Atlanta to Los Angeles is the perfect trip for you. Full of fun, adventure and beautiful scenery - what more could you want?

The 2,690-mile road trip from Atlanta to Los Angeles takes 41 hours to drive. Key stops include Nashville, Memphis, Las Vegas, Albuquerque, Austin, San Diego and New Orleans, as well as Death Valley National Park, Zion National Park and Grand Canyon.

To help you plan your trip we've come up with the best routes and places to stop overnight, as well as our favorite places to visit and the best time of year to make the trip from Atlanta to Los Angeles.

How far is Los Angeles from Atlanta, and how long will the road trip take?

There's no hiding from the fact that the road trip from Atlanta to Los Angeles is a long way. While there are several different ways you can take, our recommendation is to head either further north or south, to make the best of the cities and attractions on offer along the way.

The quickest of the two heads north to pass through Nevada and Utah. Spanning a distance of 2,690 miles, this option will take you at least 41 hours to drive and that's without any stops along the way.

Our Southern Route, which takes you through the state of Louisiana amongst others, is only slightly longer at 2,800 miles and will take 44 hours of non-stop driving before you reach Los Angeles.

You'll need at least a week to best enjoy this epic trip. This way you can break up the journey into more manageable chunks and include some of the detours to the nearby national parks, such as Zion and Death Valley.

Zion National Park, USA with bright fall scenery along the Angel's Landing trail, looking down to the grass and valley below and taken on a sunny day.

Best road trip route from Atlanta to Los Angeles

Both route options on this road trip from Atlanta to Los Angeles will offer city vibes! There are so many amazing stops to make on both routes, that there are going to be plenty of things to do and see whichever direction you decide to follow.

Our Northern Route passes some of the major US cities and national parks. You'll see unique sights of buildings and cars sticking out of the ground as well as the famous Sin City.

Passing through Tennessee, you'll get the chance to follow in the famous musicians' footsteps in the cities of Nashville and Memphis. But it's not all about the bright lights, the Northern Route also takes you into the wilderness at the Petrified Forest National Park, plus you'll get to visit the epic Grand Canyon.

If Southern America appeals, with its sandy beaches, then you should consider our alternative route. Still passing through some major cities, including the wonderful New Orleans, Houston and San Diego, this route gives a bit of southern charm to your drive.

There are still plenty of national parks on this route, including White Sands National Park, De Soto National Forest as well as the incredible Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Though be prepared, the additional beach stops will mean a long drive through Texas which can feel tedious.

With a fantastic choice between two amazing routes, both offering a similar amount of great attractions and cities, your choice between the two will ultimately come down to which places are still on your bucket list yet to be ticked off.

Santa Monica Beach, Los Angeles, California, USA on a warm sunny day with the beach in the foreground, palm trees in the distance and mountains beyond that.

The Northern Route

Begin your trip by taking Interstate 75 (I-75) north from Atlanta, driving through Marietta and a short detour from Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests. Continue on this road until you reach Exit 2 where you'll take Interstate (I-24) West for the next stretch.

The interstate will take you to your first major stop in Nashville, a great city for music history and great vibes. When you leave, you'll need to follow Interstate 40 (I-40) west, passing through several towns as well as Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge.

The next stretch will take you to Memphis, another great music city that famously houses the studio Elvis Presley recorded in. When you're ready to leave, you'll carry on I-40 west to Little Rock, a great option for an overnight stop on this route.

Continue on I-40 driving through Arkansas, you'll follow the river and pass near the entrance to Ozark-St. Francis National Forest before crossing into the state of Oklahoma.

Still on I-40, you'll arrive at Oklahoma City, another great place to explore. Continue on the same interstate heading west before crossing into Texas. As the desert landscape changes the scenery of your drive, you'll soon arrive at Amarillo.

Follow I-40 through several more towns, including Santa Rose before you arrive at Albuquerque; a great option for another overnight rest and to enjoy the scenery and nearby attractions.

Continue west after your stay and pass by Bluewater Lake State Park before crossing into Arizona. You'll need to take exit 286 to follow US-180 to the Petrified Forest National Park, a short but scenic detour to a unique park.

Back on I-40, continue west to Exit 211 where you'll join US-89. Follow this road past Wupatki National Monument, making a stop to visit the incredible Grand Canyon National Park. For a longer stop, you could stay at nearby Flagstaff.

Retrace your drive back to US-89 and head north, following the road past Vermilion Cliffs National Monument and into the state of Utah. At Mt Carmel Junction, switch to UT-9, stopping at Springdale to visit the stung Zion National Park.

Continue on UT-9 until you join Interstate 15 (I-15) South, following it past Red Cliffs National Conservation Area and across into Nevada. Make a short detour to visit the Valley of Fire State Park, before following the interstate to Las Vegas where you can also visit the nearby Red Rock Canyon.

When you leave the city, you'll need to follow US-95 north before taking NV-374 south and then CA-190, turning right to visit Death Valley National Park along the way.

Head south on US-395 before following CA-14 in Cantil as you drive through Lancaster and between Angeles National Forest and Castaic Lake State Recreation Area. Take Exit 1A to join Interstate 5 (I-5) which you will then follow the rest of your way to Los Angeles.

Angeles National Forest, California, USA from Strawberry Peak Trail overlooking the green mountains into the distance on a sunny clear day.

The Southern Route

Our Southern Route will see you take Interstate 75 out of Atlanta, before following Interstate 85 (I-85) South all the way to Montgomery. Leave the city on Interstate 65 (I-65), still heading south to Exit 69 and take US-29, passing close to Blackwater River State Forest.

Take Exit 12 to Interstate 10 (I-10) and follow it for a short drive to Exit 3, before arriving at Pensacola in Florida, a beautiful spot with stunning beaches. The next stretch will follow the coast west on FL-292 and pass through Orange Beach to Gulf Shores.

Get on US-98 before taking I-10 west and cross Mobile Bay. Follow the signs for US-45 before joining US-98. Continue on this road as you cross into Mississippi, taking MS-29 and stopping at De Soto National Forest for a walk and stretch of your legs.

Merge with Interstate 59 (I-59) at Poplarville, and head south alongside Pearl River Wildlife Management Area. You'll cross Lake Pontchartrain on I-10 and arrive at New Orleans, a great point for an overnight stop to enjoy this incredible city.

Once you're ready to leave, get back on I-10 this time heading west, passing Lake Maurepas to the city of Baton Rogue. Still on the same interstate, drive alongside Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge and pass by Lafayette.

Continue on I-10 west, stopping if you'd like to visit several wildlife refuges along the way. You'll arrive at Beaumont, before passing several towns and Trinity Bay. The interstate will take you to Houston, another overnight stop option.

Stay on I-10 until you reach Exit 695 when you'll leave to follow State Highway 71 west and TX-21 all the way to Austin in Texas. After visiting the city, you'll join I-35 south to San Antonio.

The next stretch is the longest with few attractions along the way. Continue on I-10 west until you eventually reach Exit 140A. From here take TX-54 north to US-62 east where you can visit Guadalupe Mountains National Park (which makes the long drive worth for the best views).

On leaving, follow US-180/US-62 west to just before El Paso, taking the Boulevard to Exit 24B and then joining US-54 East. Next, follow US-70 west, making a pitstop to visit the surreal White Sands National Park along the way.

Continue on US-70 until rejoining I-10 west. Follow the interstate as far as Benson, where you can stop to visit Coronado National Forest, before continuing onwards to the city of Tucson in Arizona. This is a great base for exploring the nearby mountains and parks.

Still heading west on I-10, you'll pass Picacho Peak State Park before arriving in Phoenix. Leave the city on the same interstate to Exit 112 and join AZ-85 south before merging with I-8 west. Continue on this road as you cross into the state of California.

Follow Interstate 8 (I-8) through Cuyamaca Rancho State Park to exit 14B at La Mesa. Join CA-94 to San Diego as you rejoin the coast. You'll then take I-5 North, passing several beaches all the way to Los Angeles.

Best places to stop between Atlanta and Los Angeles

A road trip of this magnitude will need several overnight stops along the way between Atlanta and Los Angeles in order to get plenty of rest and be able to enjoy the attractions.

Thankfully both routes pass through a huge choice of fantastic cities along the way. Of all the spectacular places, here are some of our favorites.

A mountain retreat at Little Rock

Set a third of the way to Los Angeles on the Northern Route sits the city of Little Rock. Not only is this a great place to visit, but it's also the last city you'll visit before Albuquerque and you'll be driving through it anyway, so it won't add any extra miles to your already long trip.

Little Rock, Arkansas, USA skyline on the river at twilight.

Located along the Arkansas River, the capital of Arkansas is known for its stunning nearby sites including Pinnacle Mountain State Park, a 2,300-acre park featuring Pinnacle Mountain and surrounded by the bottomlands of the Big Maumelle and Little Maumelle rivers.

If you're looking for an indoor attraction, Little Rock is also home to the Museum of Discovery, a great attraction for all ages (especially little ones), it focuses on STEM education with interactive exhibits throughout.

After taking in all that this great city has to offer, a stop at Little Rock Marriott is highly recommended . Adjacent to the Old State House Museum and less than a 5-minute drive to the Arkansas Arts Centre, this 4-star hotel features an onsite bar and restaurant.

The updated rooms make this a homey environment to relax in. As this isn't a huge city, you can really enjoy some downtime in the resort before another busy travel day tomorrow. Get your rest, you'll need it!

Reach new heights in Albuquerque

Further along the Northern Route and about two-thirds to Los Angeles is Albuquerque in New Mexico. After driving the long distance through the Texas Panhandle, the city of Albuquerque is a great place to rest overnight before tackling the national parks the next day.

Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA taken at sunset in a valley on the scenic drive from Albuquerque New Mexico to Santa Fe, trees and fields in the distance.

Made famous thanks to its siesta of color at the International Balloon Fiesta, an event which sees hundreds of hot air balloons take to the skies in a two-week stretch at the beginning of October, Albuquerque offers plenty to keep any visitor entertained.

Other than its popular fiesta, there's nearby Petroglyph National Monument to explore. This volcanic basalt escarpment stretches seventeen miles along Albuquerque, while the Western edge of the grounds contains a chain of fascinating examples of dormant fissure volcanoes.

But for the best views for miles, you've got to take a ride on the Sandia Peak Tramway which takes you to the ridge line of the Sandia Mountains. It's the longest aerial tram in the US and is the best way to take in the incredible landscape.

If you are looking for a great stopover close to some of the top attractions, then El Vado Motel ticks plenty of boxes . This modern hotel is packed with historic charm and in a great location. The seasonal outdoor swimming pool is a real plus, and great way to cool off after a busy day exploring.

Only a short 5-minute drive from some of the popular sites including Albuquerque BioPark Botanic Garden and New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, it makes it a great base to see what Albuquerque has to offer.

An out-of-this-world experience in Houston

If you've instead opted to follow the Southern Route, then a stop in Houston is a great idea. Located a third of the way to your destination and as one of the cities you'll pass on this trip, Houston makes a great longer stay.

Houston, Texas, USA with the city skyline in daytime in the background and a green grass park in the foreground against a blue sky.

Known as being the world capital of space exploration, there's so much to see in this city that will blow your mind. Make sure to stop at the Johnson Space Center which displays over 400 space artefacts including multiple space capsules.

For something less space-themed, how about a day trip to Galveston Island? Just an hour away from Houston sits an island with an amusement park, beaches and lots of restaurants.

To really complete your visit to Houston, we cannot recommend the Four Seasons Hotel enough . Located in the city center, this 5-star hotel features a full-service spa and onsite restaurant so you can get that massage and nice dinner that's absolutely necessary during a road trip.

The Four Seasons has everything you need onsite so there's no reason for you to even want to leave. If you want to venture out, the Theatre District and the Museum District are just a walk away. There are plenty of things to do in Houston; relax first and explore later.

A spot of luxury in El Paso

For a later stop on the Southern Route and two-thirds of the way to Los Angeles, our final recommendation is to plan a stay in El Paso. After driving through the entire state of Texas, this fabulous city rest will be just what you need to rest and recover.

Southern Rocky Mountains in El Paso, Texas, USA taken with desert mountains at sunrise at the area is known as Castner Range.

After a quick bite to eat when you arrive downtown, you can take a walk around the El Paso Zoo and Botanical Gardens where you'll find over 220 species at this 35-acre zoo - some of which are critically endangered. They also have a sea lion exhibit that hosts daily shows.

For something a bit more physical you can explore Franklin Mountains State Park. One of the largest urban parks in the US lying completely within city limits, it's open for hiking, mountain biking, picnicking and scenic drives. You can also enjoy views year-round.

For a touch of luxury, Stanton House El Paso is the resort for you . 24-hour room service, an onsite bar, restaurant, spa and a terrace are all on offer at this 4-star hotel.

Whether you want to relax in your room with room service, enjoy great views on the terrace with a cocktail, or enjoy a massage, this hotel has you covered.

You're also just a short walk from the El Paso Museum of Art or you can drive across the border into Mexico (just remember to bring your passport). This is a great place to finish off your drive across the great state of Texas.

Best time to go on a road trip from Atlanta to Los Angeles

Los Angeles is definitely a year-round destination. As a coastal city, you'll experience moderate temperatures all year round with sunshine most days of the year and an average temperature of a comfortable 71 degrees Fahrenheit.

Summer is the busiest time in LA, as it's the time the city most packed with tourists. They're flocking to the beaches (we would, too) for some summer fun and that makes this an expensive time to visit. But if you want that iconic, hot LA summer, this is the perfect opportunity.

The temperature during the summer usually averages in the low 80 degrees Fahrenheit, so it's perfect for a beach day, going to the pier, or roller skating along the esplanade. But if you want a quieter road trip, winter could be your ally.

While it comes with a significant increase in rainy days, the weather in winter is still comfortable with mild-to-warm temperatures. During the day it averages temperatures of the high 60s to low 70s, while at night it does drop to the high 40s and low 50s.

It might not be the best time for a dip in the ocean, but any other outdoor activity can still be enjoyed. This is also the cheapest time to travel to LA so if you're looking for celebrity-spotting on a budget, this is the best time to go.

In the spring and fall, there may be some rainy days or a random cold front, but there is still plenty to enjoy. Temperatures range from the low 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit, much more pleasant than the weather of the scorching summer.

How about visiting during a popular festival, or two? LA, as you'd expect, has a full annual calendar of events from the Golden Globe Awards in January to the Emmy Awards in October. Don't miss the opportunity to attend the iconic and famous Coachella Music Festival in April.

Georgia is full of adventure: from mountains to historical sites, unique towns, bustling cities, scenic byways, and more, your trip is bound to be exciting!

Below we are listing some of the “must-sees” for your Georgia itinerary. Make sure to stop and explore these sites if they interest you, but don’t be afraid to keep your personal timeline in mind when planning this trip!

With that being said, get the car ready to go with some travel snacks and your best playlist of podcasts and songs– you are in for a wild exploration on your Georgia road trip!

Don’t forget to check out our list of the Best Things To Do In Georgia!

The stunning mountains and fall trees of Georgia

The Ultimate Georgia Road Trip

Getting to georgia.

If you have to fly into Georgia to begin your Georgia road trip, we recommend flying into Atlanta Airport. Not only is this airport large and accommodating, offering flight carriers such as United Airlines, Delta, and more, but they also are a great hub that many cities fly too, like Tampa, Phoenix, Philadelphia, and more!

The Atlanta Airport can be a bit big and scary to navigate (with lots of shopping and dining experiences!), but it is always bustling and full of people already on an adventure, and we think starting here is a great starting point for you! Flights can be a bit more expensive to Atlanta, but make sure to check your carrier, as who you fly with can affect the prices. And even consider driving into the city if you’re coming in from a nearby state: it may be a bit cheaper!

Atlanta Georgia is a beautiful, modern city.

Getting Around Georgia

The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport features a rental car center (RCC) on-site so you can easily start your Georgia road trip the second you get off your flight and into a car! This RCC is a one-stop facility that houses 13 rental car brands, such as Enterprise Alamo, Budget Car Rental, and more.

To get to the RCC, just take the SkyTrain! The RCC is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week for your convenience. We recommend possibly renting a car that will be more spacious for your comfort, and looking at gas mileage too! You don’t want to constantly be adding gas stations to your Georgia itinerary, so maybe save those fancy sport car rentals for another trip!

The roads in Georgia can be city like and busy, or winding and true to country back roads depending where you are!

Stop 1: Downtown Atlanta, Georgia

Since you’re flying into Atlanta, it only seems fair to use this as your starting point for your Georgia road trip! Atlanta is a big city, with lots to do, so make sure to pace yourself as you explore some cool (and slightly touristy things) like The Georgia Aquarium or the World of Coca-Cola.

The Atlanta Botanical Gardens are 30 acres of plants, statues, and fountains, and Centennial Olympic Park is the site of the 1996 Olympics. There are also cool tours, like the CNN Studio Tour , where you can go behind the TV news network.

Or if you’re looking for more outdoorsy or historical type things to explore, Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park is the birthplace, family church, and tomb of King, and the High Museum of Art features a diverse art collection. The close-by Piedmont Park is also lush and green and has farmers’ markets all the time.

But whatever you decide to do in Atlanta, it will make for a great start for your Georgia road trip, especially now there are so many things to add to your Georgia itinerary in just one city!

Stop 2: Cloudland Canyon State Park

Now that your road trip in Georgia has officially begun, you’re going to head northwest toward the Cloudland Canyon State Park from Atlanta. This natural park is on the western edge of the famous Lookout Mountain and is well known for Sitton Gulch Creek that cuts through the mountain in a deep gorge.

The Sitton Gulch Trail runs parallel to the creek, which you can easily follow, but be careful of the strewn boulder’s nearby. You can also add Waterfalls Trail to your Georgia itinerary, which is a short, steep trail that features stairs that go into the canyon.

If you go down the Waterfalls Trail, you can find Cherokee Falls and Hemlock Falls , which are great for settling and relaxing and watching water cascade into pools. Sitton’s Cave is also close by too, featuring gorgeous mineral formations that are a must-see for your Georgia road trip!

Yonah Mountain is most famous for Yonah Mountain Trail , which takes hikers through a rocky, wildflower-filled forest. Climbing this mountain offers it’s great Yonah Summit views, and there are great campsites close by.

Yonah rises from the foothills of the southern Appalachian Mountains and just skyward. These incredible, steep climbs are one of Georgia’s most popular trails, and the rolling landscape from the views are worth every stop. Be warned though, this is a moderately strenuous hike due to its upward nature, so be prepared! And watch out for those extreme drop-offs!

Helen is a mountain town known for its vineyards and Bavarian-Style buildings. Since this town is in the heart of it all, there is so much to do: Unicoi State Park is close by and has a lake as well as campsites where you can relax and spend some time. There are also trails that run through the Chattahoochee National Forest to to Anna Ruby and Rave Cliff Waterfalls that you can explore.

If you want to fish for trout, Dukes Creek is in a nearby state park, and the Hardman Farm State Historic Site is home to the Nacoochee Indian Mound burial site.  Helen is also a great lodging town with cute and quaint shops and restaurants– all one of a kind!

Stop 5: Tallulah Gorge State Park

As you continue on your road trip in Georgia, we next recommend stopping by Tallulah Gorge State Park , a 2,689-acre park with waterfalls, gorges, rivers, and more. This park is arguably most famous for the Tallulah Gorge (hence its name), as the Tallulah River cuts through rock to create a stunning canyon you can look over from a suspension bridge.

Visitors also love to visit Hurricane Falls here, where they can get closer to the canyon on different sets of trails. Lake Tugalo is also close by, and this features a lot of outdoor recreation, like fishing, kayaking, and camping near the edge of the water.

Many people love to take the Tallulah Gorge Rim Trail to get the direct view of the Tallulah falls dam, and along the way, they stop by Ocean Falls and L’Ea d’Or Falls to rest and relish in the sound of crashing water and natural beauty. This is truly one of the coolest places to stop on your Georgia road trip!

Savannah , Georgia is your next stop on your Georgia Road Trip (and warning, will be the longest stretch of your road trip- but we promise it is totally worth it!). This coastal city is famous for its historic district that is filled with cobblestoned squares and parks like Forsyth Park that are surrounded by giant oak trees covered in Spanish moss.

Savannah is great because it has fantastic landscapes, well-preserved architecture, and vibrant history. From visiting the Birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low , the creator of Girl Scouts, to walking through Savannah’s Telfair Museum , you can experience history and art at the same time.

There are also great trolley tours to take you through the city. Old Town Trolley Tours can offer great overviews of Savanah, and you’ll be able to stop and weave through historic buildings that feature shops and restaurants along River Street .

Stop 7: Jekyll Island State Park

After spending some time in Savannah, head toward Jekyll Island State Park as part of your road trip in Georgia! This state-managed island offers a variety of recreational activities, great photography spots, and more.

We highly recommend checking out Driftwood Beach in particular: this beach is known for its numerous driftwood trees that are scattered around the shore, and give off a looming presence during sunset– perfect for photo ops! The St. Simons Lighthouse Museum is also great for exploring as historic property.

St. Andrews Beach features picnic areas for relaxing afternoons, and if you find yourself exploring the Historic District , also make sure to check out their unique Trail System too! Or if you’re feeling more outdoorsy, the Great Dunes Park and Neptune Park are great for relaxing with their pools, slides, and loungers. You must add this to your Georgia itinerary!

After checking out Jekyll State Park, plan your visit to Okefenokee Swamp Park as a part of your Georgia road trip! This refuge has SO much to see, including multiple historic cites, and is known as the “Land of the Trembling Earth.”

When visiting, you can check out the Chesser Island Homestead , or go down a drive on Swamp Island Drive , which is 7.5 miles long, so you can walk it too if you’re feeling adventurous! The Wildnerness Canoe Trails let you explore the 120 miles of water trails in the swamp.

The Upland Discovery Trail lets you walk through pines and palmettos to experience the true wildlife of this beautiful park: here you will find woodpeckers, warblers, and white-tailed deer. This trail is about 9 miles in length, and easy for exploration.

Although some may not want to add a swamp to their Georgia itinerary, this shallow wetland is the largest blackwater swamp in North America. It features uniquely gorgeous views and wildlife, so we suggest checking it out!

Radium Springs is famous as being a part of the “Seven Natural Wonders of Georgia” so of course, we had to add it to your Georgia road trip. This is the largest natural spring in the state, and it is well known for its deep blue waters.

The Springs flow at 70,000 gallons per minute and empty into the river, which you can walk along. There is also a complex and extensive cavern system underneath the blue water that is ripe for exploration.

Unfortunately, the water is a constant 68 degrees– too cold to swim in during your road trip in Georgia– but you can stroll through the Courtyard where the old Radium Springs Casino once was and admire the waters as well as the flora from recently renovated terraces and gazebos!

Providence Canyon State Park is an outdoor recreational area that features over 1,000 acres in southwest Georgia. Most famously, this park is home to Providence Canyon , which is referred to as “Little Grand Canyon” and is also a part of the Seven Natural Wonders of Georgia.

At this state park, there are also 2 picnic shelters, 9 campsites, a museum and a visitor center to prepare you for your stay! But even when you’re not camping, the nearby Hannahatchee Creek, Flint RiverQuarium , and Lake Walter F. George are ripe for exploration.

However, before you go explore around the canyon itself, make sure to take in the massive gullies this natural wonder. You can enjoy views from a Rim Trai l and immerse yourself in the soil that is pink, orange, red and purple. This spot is truly magical for photographs: between the canyon and the rare Plumleaf Azalea that grows here, you’ll want to add it to your Georgia itinerary at least for a photo op.

This city is full of cool things to do: from the National Civil War Naval Museum that displays warships, to the Coca-Cola Space Science Center that features immersive theatre and observatories, you won’t be bored in this city!

There is also the National Infantry Museum that you can check out, but we reckoned taking some time to explore the Chattahoochee River Walk and the Columbus Botanical Gardens to really appreciate the views of this historic place!

road trip from california to georgia

Only 3 major routes: I-40, 20 or 10.

I-40 is good until Albuquerque, then less eventful.

I-10 closer to Gulf of Mexico.

I-20 if you want to drive through Dallas.

I would consider doing an I-40/10 combo. These are what I like:

First use I-40.

Grand Canyon

Meteor Crater

Scandia Mountain (tram ride)

then take I-25 south to join I-10

White Sand Monument

San Antonio

Houston/Galveston

New Orleans

Note that this drive is a 3-day straight drive. You have 10 days, you can sight see a bit but may not have enough time to cover everything on your wish list. You need to short-list and pick some.

Looking for a way to avoid mountains on a long road trip? Find alternate routes that are smoother and explore ways to bypass the Rocky Mountains or cut through on major highways. An easier drive will have less elevation change and avoid small roads that may climb to high altitude.

Google maps can show you the elevation for a bike route, but if you're planning a cross country road trip in an RV, you may want to explore the flattest travel routes across America in any state or country. Check out the flattest state in the U.S.

You can also use this site to find the highest elevation point in any city, state, or country. Check the "steepness" score to find interesting uphill hikes to summit, hilly streets to drive, or the fastest downhill mountain biking trails.

Solar eclipse 2024: Follow the path of totality

Solar eclipse, what you need to know to watch monday's total solar eclipse.

The NPR Network

A stunning celestial event is visible across the country Monday, when the moon crosses directly in front of the sun: a total solar eclipse. For those in the path of totality, there will be a few brief moments when the moon completely covers the sun and the world becomes dark.

Traveling for totality? Skip ahead.

This will be the last chance to catch a total solar eclipse in the continental U.S. for about 20 years, so here's what you need to know to safely enjoy!

When is the eclipse?

April 8, 2024 there will be a total solar eclipse that crosses from the Pacific coast of Mexico through the United States.

What is totality and why it matters

According to NASA , totality will start around 11:07 a.m. PDT/1:07 EDT in Mexico and leave Maine at around 1:30 pm PDT/3:30 pm EDT.

Here's what time the eclipse will be visible in your region

Here's what time the eclipse will be visible in your region

Check out this table for when the partial eclipse and totality are visible in each region or check by zip code here.

A partial solar eclipse will be visible across the contiguous United States, so even if you're not directly in the path, you should be able to see something special, weather permitting.

Unable to get to totality? We'll be sharing highlights here from across the NPR Network throughout the day Monday if you can't see it in real time.

Where to see totality?

More than 30 million people live in the path of totality for Monday's eclipse, and many more in nearby areas.

Here's what we know about Monday's weather forecast.

Why totality matters

As NPR's Neil Greenfieldboyce explains , "During a total eclipse, the sky darkens suddenly and dramatically . The temperature drops. Stars come out. Beautiful colors appear around the horizon. And the once-familiar sun becomes a black void in the sky surrounded by the glowing corona — that's the ghostly white ring that is the sun's atmosphere."

For April's eclipse, going from 'meh' to 'OMG' might mean just driving across town

Eclipse Science

For april's eclipse, going from 'meh' to 'omg' might mean just driving across town.

A partial eclipse, while still a fun experience, is hardly as dramatic. Those with a view of the partial eclipse will see crescent-shaped shadows like those seen here in 2017.

How to watch safely

If you plan to look directly at the eclipse (partial or totality), you're going to need eclipse glasses handy because looking directly at the sun without proper protection ( traditional sunglasses don't count! ) can be harmful to your eyes.

The perfect celestial soundtrack to the total solar eclipse

The perfect celestial soundtrack to the total solar eclipse

As NPR's Joe Hernandez explains, "Proper eye protection must be worn throughout a total solar eclipse — except for the roughly 3 1/2 to 4 minutes when the moon fully obscures the sun, a brief period known as 'totality.' (You will need to take your glasses off during totality to actually see it.)"

If you don't have access to eclipse glasses, you can get crafty with things you have around the house ( like some of us did back in 2017!) More on that here.

Traveling for totality?

The celestial event is driving a ton of domestic travel to the path of totality. If you're headed out of town to view the eclipse, here are some NPR Network resources for areas in the path of totality:

Texas The path of totality crosses through the Lone Star State, with some areas expecting a possible influx of visitors in the hundreds of thousands to catch prime viewing. Our member stations across the state have gathered local resources to help you navigate the region and the eclipse!

  • San Antonio: Check out the latest from Texas Public Radio
  • Dallas: Explore KERA's coverage for the latest
  • Austin: Head to KUT for the best local resources

Arkansas The eclipse will be cutting through the state, putting Little Rock in the path of totality. Check out Little Rock Public Radio for local resources.

The southwestern edge of the state will be well-positioned to witness the total solar eclipse this year. Kentucky Public Radio is covering the eclipse throughout the region, from Kentuckiana eclipse mania to the University of Louisville's free class about the celestial event. Keep an eye on WKMS for the latest local updates.

Missouri The southeastern corner of the state will be in the path of totality, crossing across towns like Whitewater and Ste. Genevieve. Head to St. Louis Public Radio for local coverage and resources. Illinois Carbondale seems to have won the eclipse lottery, being in the path of totality both in 2017 and for this year's eclipse . For resources from across the state, check out Illinois Public Media .

Indiana A huge portion of the state will be within the path of totality, giving cities across Indiana, including Bloomington and Indianapolis, prime viewing of the eclipse.

  • Bloomington: Check out Indiana Public Media
  • Indianapolis: Head to WFYI for the latest
  • Fort Wayne: Just north of the path of totality, WBOI has resources for the Allen County area

Ohio The Buckeye State is getting bisected by this year's path of totality, plunging a number of the state's most populous areas into darkness for a few minutes on Monday.

  • Cleveland: Head to Ideastream Public Media for the latest.
  • Columbus: With the capital city just south of totality, head to WOSU for regional resources.
  • Cincinnati: Totality will just miss the border town. Here are some tips from WVXU on how to navigate the eclipse in the region.

Pennsylvania Only the northwestern-most corner of the state will catch totality, with views from the lakeside in Erie being particularly well-positioned for a stunning viewing experience. WESA has more from across the region.

Plan to watch the eclipse from a wild mountain summit? Be ready for harsh conditions

New York Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Plattsburgh will fall under the path of totality on Monday. If you're planning to travel to the region for the best views, here are some local resources to stay safe and informed:

  • Buffalo: Head to WBFO for the latest
  • Syracuse: WAER has more on plans in the Salt City
  • North Country: NCPR has the latest from across the region, as well as information on local viewing events to check out

Vermont The Green Mountain State will see totality across its most populous region, including Burlington and Montpelier, as well as the Northeast Kingdom on the Canadian border. Vermont Public has everything you need to know to navigate your time in the region to enjoy the eclipse safely. New Hampshire The northernmost region of the Granite State will be in the path of totality, providing prime viewing to those in Coos County. NHPR has info on local events, travel updates as well as special coverage with New Hampshire Public Television. Maine The last state in the path of totality in the U.S., much of Northern Maine will be positioned for prime viewing. The rural region is preparing for an influx of visitors, and safety officials are encouraging visitors and locals alike to be prepared. Maine Public will be covering the eclipse and has everything you need to know to navigate the region safely.

How to document the eclipse safely

With the ease of cell photography , it can be tempting to reach for your phone to document the eclipse and the moments of totality, but make sure to do so safely.

As NPR's Scott Neuman explains , "For starters, you'll need to wear eclipse glasses or similar protective eye gear while aiming your camera or even just observing the eclipse."

Feeling ambitious? Here are a few more tips.

Or if you're not inclined to capture the moment visually, you lean into some other forms of creative expression. Indiana, for example, has named Linda Neal Reising the official poet in the state for this year's eclipse.

As former NPR reporter and eclipse superfan David Baron shared with Life Kit , viewing totality "[is] like you've left the solar system and are looking back from some other world."

So consider focusing on being present in the moment to enjoy the celestial spectacle.

  • Plan to wander into the wild for the best view? Here are some tips from outdoor experts.
  • Tips from Bill Nye on the best ways to enjoy the eclipse.

NPR will be sharing highlights here from across the NPR Network throughout the day Monday if you're unable to get out and see it in real time. NPR's Emily Alfin Johnson compiled these resources.
