The Rolling Stones’ Tour Of The Americas ’75 was huge, seeing the band play to over a million people.

The Rolling Stones Performing Live at the Tour of the Americas 75

The Rolling Stones ’ Tour of the Americas ‘75 has been called “Pomp Rock,” and justifiably so. While the band’s previous tour of North America in the early 70s was big, this one was massive; one of the largest tours undertaken by a band to that point.

It was dubbed The Tour Of the Americas, as the band originally planned to play some South American dates – where they’d never played before – beginning in Mexico City on August 7, before playing Rio De Janeiro, São Paulo, and closing the tour on August 31 in Caracas, Venezuela. Unfortunately, those plans never came quite together, and it would be over twenty years before the Stones finally played in South America.

At the shows that did happen, the Stones ended up playing to over a million people (1,101,800) at 45 shows in 26 cities in 21 states (plus Washington D.C. and Canada). The tour grossed in excess of $10 million, a far cry from that first US tour that had opened almost 11 years ago, to the day, in San Bernardino.

The tour opened in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where the group gave two performances at the State University. 15,000 fans, at each show, watched Ronnie Wood’s first gigs with the band.

Somewhat appropriately, given the tour’s title, the band entered the stage each night to Aaron Copland’s, “Fanfare For the Common Man.” The Stones were augmented throughout the tour by Billy Preston (organ and Piano) and Ollie E. Brown (percussion); Billy did two of his own songs during the Stones set (“That’s Life” and “Outta Space”).

Robin Wagner designed the ten ton stage set in the shape of a lotus flower. A more sophisticated version was used at the larger venues, where the petals were raised and lowered hydraulically. Over 300 lights enhanced the whole effect, which – at this point – was a record for any band.

As Britain’s Daily Mirror memorably reported on the stage show this way: “Mick burst back into the limelight – sitting astride a giant penis. The 20-foot-high sex symbol appeared through a hole in the stage. Mick circled the huge phallus and finally straddled it before it sank from sight. Eight tons of speakers blasted out a sound that could be heard two miles away.”

While no new material was debuted on tour, the compilation album Made in the Shade was released to capitalize on the tour’s publicity. During the tour, several guest musicians joined The Stones on stage: Eric Clapton played on the encore one night in Madison Square Gardens; Carlos Santana played “Sympathy For The Devil” on another night, while Elton John stayed on stage for ten songs at Fort Collins, Colorado.

The Rolling Stones - Sympathy For The Devil (Official Lyric Video)

The support bands throughout the tour, meanwhile, were rather incredible: The Meters, J Geils Band, The Gap Band, Rufus, Montrose, Trapeze, Tower of Power, Charlie Daniels Band, Atlanta Rhythm Section, The Commodores , Bobby Womack, and The Eagles all performed opening duties for The Stones.

The tour ended at Rich Stadium in Buffalo, New York, on August 8, 1975. The opening acts for this particular gig were the Outlaws and Bobby Womack. Describing The Stones performance that night, one journalist wrote: “The show was nearly perfect. Charlie Watts kept his incredible pulse beat going without working up a sweat and Keith Richard will never play better than he did. Wood is as much Jagger’s foil as Keith’s. Jagger kicks, pokes and prods him, yanking him across the stage like a puppet, pretending to attack him savagely.”

It would be another three years until The Stones again toured America, and that one would be a much smaller affair.

I think Bobby Womack opened at Rich Stadium with the Outlaws as well. The house was probably closer to 80,000 that night.

You do realize Mexico is part of North America right? No need to mention those dates as part of the dates that fell through during the TOTA.

I saw them in San Antonio for a few songs. A friend and I were stationed at Lackland Air Force Base following basic training and had to be back to the barracks by 11. After asking a cop where we could get tickets, we scalped a couple from this beautiful woman wearing an orange caveman bikini for $20. We proceeded to the Hilton Palacio on the Riverwalk for a beer or two before the show when Jagger and Preston walked past the bar. We chased after them and I got Mick’s autograph, which I still have. Jagger was already fried. I don’t remember who opened, only that I felt sorry for them because everyone was yelling for the Stones. I read later that the woman in the bikini had snuck into the hotel and found her way to Mick’s room.

I was at the Buffalo show too. There was also an intermission “act” that consisted of some daredevil crawling into a wooden box and blowing himself up??

I was at the Milwaukee show at the outdoor county stadium with The Eagles, and the next week caught both nights at the Chicago Stadium, don’t remember who backed up.Awesome, legendary experience!!!

Rocking the Americas: The Rolling Stones’ Tour of 1975 in Photos

In the annals of rock ‘n’ roll, there are legendary tours that have taken on a life of their own, and The Rolling Stones ’ Tour of the Americas in 1975 is certainly one of them. It was a tour that saw one of the most iconic rock bands of all time taking on a new member, introducing a new stage persona, and embarking on a wild journey across North and South America. Let’s roll back the years and revisit this significant milestone in the history of The Rolling Stones.

A Band in Transition

The 1975 tour was a pivotal moment for The Rolling Stones. It marked the first time the band toured with guitarist Ronnie Wood, who had recently replaced Mick Taylor. While Taylor’s departure had initially caused some anxiety among fans, Wood quickly proved himself to be a more than capable replacement. His chemistry with the band, both on and off the stage, was palpable, and it wasn’t long before he became an integral part of the Stones’ sound and identity.

A New Stage Persona

The tour also marked the introduction of a new stage persona for lead singer Mick Jagger. Donning a series of elaborate costumes and embracing a flamboyant performance style, Jagger commanded the stage with an unprecedented level of theatricality. He was no longer just a rock singer; he was a performer in the truest sense of the word. This transformation added a new layer to The Rolling Stones’ live performances and made the 1975 tour a visual spectacle as much as a musical one.

Touring the Americas

The Tour of the Americas saw The Rolling Stones playing in stadiums across North and South America, bringing their unique brand of rock ‘n’ roll to hundreds of thousands of fans. From the concrete jungles of New York to the vibrant landscapes of Brazil, the Stones left no stone unturned.

Each concert was an event, with the band playing a mix of their greatest hits and new songs from their then-recently released album, “It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll”. The response from the fans was overwhelming, further cementing The Rolling Stones’ status as one of the greatest rock bands in history.

The Legacy of the Tour

The Tour of the Americas ’75 was more than just a series of concerts; it was a defining moment in The Rolling Stones’ career. It helped to establish the band’s reputation as a dynamic live act and set a new standard for rock ‘n’ roll performances. Even today, the tour is remembered as one of the band’s most iconic outings.

Beyond its significance to The Rolling Stones, the tour also had a profound impact on the music industry. It demonstrated the potential of rock concerts as major events capable of filling stadiums, paving the way for the large-scale rock tours that have since become commonplace.

Relive the exhilarating energy and infectious rhythm of The Rolling Stones’ Tour of the Americas ’75 through these stunning stunning photos. These captivating images not only capture the electrifying performances of the iconic band but also showcase the vibrant and enthusiastic audiences that made each show an unforgettable experience.

Very cool! Good work, I really enjoyed reading this!

rolling stones on tour 1975

Hi from Las Vegas (for now,) Just wanted to let you know that this 'Concert Stage Design' blog is really cool. It seems that you unfortunately have not not been able to keep it updated? I want to say that I, and my friends that I've passed your link on to really enjoy the work you have done. If you are thinking it has been under appreciated, please don't! Would love to see what other great stage 'history' you have to share. Just a kind couple of words from a 48 year old Stones/Bowie/General R&R fan, who has always been fascinated by innovative stage design.... Thanks, Mike M.

Hi Mike Thanks for the comment, I am glad you enjoyed reading my blog. After neglecting it for a year I am ready to get back into it, so thanks for your support.- -Ben

My first concert EVER... TOTA MSG 75 NYC... with the African drummers baging for an hour before the show.... I was fifteen...

rolling stones on tour 1975

Helluva a concert intro, Kevin. I was also at MSG in '75. And thank you to Ben for this page - it brings back memories. And speaking of memories, I thought I remember the phallus also blowing confetti into the audience. But my memories may be as foggy as the air was at the time...

rolling stones on tour 1975

I was at the MSG show of this tour, and everything documented here is just as I remember it! the relentless keenignof the the steel drummers as they emerged and slowly circled the stage....the lavender fabric "cup" of the inverted lotus being drawn up slowly as the thrumb-BOP!! thrumb-ba-dum-BOP opening chords of "honky tonk women" blasted out from SOMEwhere in there; mick up on the point as the "petals" unfolded, mirror flashes of light off the big panels of shiny metal covering their undersides..charlie revealed, up on a platform, as the lavender sheet lifted clear..star fucker! sympathy for the devil!! I never had such a blast at a rock show. I'm so glad my dad could push past his loathing of all the dirt and psychedelia of the 60s/70s musical revolution to get seats for my friends and I to see this show!

rolling stones on tour 1975

What a sensational blog! I've just flicked through the TOTA stage. I'm hoping to find some images of the 1972 stage because it, at the time was revolutionary and the lighting and sound was by far the best 'on the road' that year.

rolling stones on tour 1975

Just found this site, so have to jump in with thank you for spot on accuracy. Did not remember the eagles, the Christmas lights, but at msg on Tues night show over 6y sections walked the isles, jump starting false momentum. One of the best waiting time ever. Shows first chords after 9:15. Top 3 shows ever for me,43 years ago to the month...

Thank you, awesome descriptions brought thoughts back to show. Had forgotten eagles, remember Christmas lights, and several sections of calypso band walking isles building up false monentum. 8pm show was rocking with expectation, and a bit of nyc attitude that this better be good for keeping us waiting...Well after 9, calypso synced in front of stage, house lights shut, and since that moment, I have been a stones fan

It was my good fortune to have lived in Newburgh NY in the summer of 1975. These stages were constructed an d tested inside an airport hanger at the defunct Edwards Air Force base on the outskirts of town. A few teens discovered the goings on and soon the hanger was surrounded with fans by the hundreds each night as the band and guests were flown in to practice with the new stages and lighting. It was like being invited to a free concert every night. Wild Horses became my all time favorite stones tune during that time after watching it performed there. I don’t know that any live concert could top that very special experience.

PMC, that is an awesome story!! Did you happen to take any photos? Did you ever see any other bands rehearse there?

1975’s rolling stones tour photos: “rocking the americas”.

' src=

In the annals of rock ‘n’ roll, there are legendary tours that have taken on a life of their own, and The Rolling Stones’ Tour of the Americas in 1975 is certainly one of them.

No one rocks like The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger, band thrill on Hackney Diamonds Tour

H OUSTON − It’s not only stunning, but it's somewhat miraculous that more than 60 years after their first tour, the Rolling Stones are still filling stadiums.

It’s even more head-spinning to realize that along with their treasured hits, the Rolling Stones are enhancing their set list with a trio of songs from last year’s well-received “Hackney Diamonds” – their first album of original material in 18 years and the impetus for this 16-city tour.

We’d call it a victory lap, but frontman Mick Jagger is better suited for marathons.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

At the kickoff Sunday at NRG Stadium in Houston, the core triumvirate of Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood – along with their supporting cast of exceptional musicians and singers – hit the massive stage to the sounds of Richards’ slashing out the riff of, fittingly, “Start Me Up.”

Jagger, the nimble CEO of Stones Inc., peacocked in a silver shimmering jacket, his elastic legs a mere pedestal for his rotating torso.

Richards, still owning his disheveled pirate look with a knit cap and multicolored scarf dangling from his hip, and Wood, grinning continuously and occasionally scampering down the lengthy catwalk, retained their roles as faithful consiglieres.

There isn’t a patch of smooth facial skin among them (Jagger and Richards are 80 and Wood is 76). But with the energy to plow through an 18-song, two-hour set – yes, shorter than previous Stones shows, but still fulfilling – no one is looking to crown them pageant winners.

While the band needed a couple of songs to fully find their groove – the striding cadence of a reworked “Get Off Of My Cloud” and a ramshackle “Rocks Off” felt curious rather than robust – Jagger compensated with his riveting presence and still-supple vocals.

Along with the “Hackney Diamonds” songs plucked for their major live debuts (the band played a few of the new tracks at an intimate New York club gig in October ), including the feisty “ Angry ” and encore of gospelized “ Sweet Sounds of Heaven ,” the 1966 tune “ Out of Time ” also received its U.S. debut. The band revived it last year during some performances for the overseas Sixty tour.

“I don’t think you really knew it, but you got to know it,” Jagger said with a smile after leading the nearly full stadium through the arm-waving chorus.

As typical for a Rolling Stones production, the stage ran the width of the stadium, blanketed with screens beaming images of the band with magnificent clarity. Close-ups of drummer Steve Jordan, who assumed rhythm duties after the death of original drummer Charlie Watts in 2021, joyfully thundering through the gem “ Paint It, Black ” and birthday boy Chuck Leavell ripping out a fleet-fingered solo on his Yamaha keyboard on “Honky Tonk Women” offered fans a peek at the magic happening a few feet behind Jagger and Co.

During the always-visceral “ Sympathy for the Devil ,” as serpents and fire crawled across the screens, Jagger prowled through the sinister groove, augmented by percussion provided by background vocalist Bernard Fowler and chunky bass lines from Darryl Jones.

Keyboardist Matt Clifford added French horn to “ You Can’t Always Get What You Want ” as Jagger, playing an acoustic guitar, strolled through the message of acquiescence that escalated into a gospel throwdown.

The horn duo of Karl Denson and Tim Ries coated many familiar anthems – “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and “Miss You” among them – with their rich brass sounds. But, as fans have realized over the decades, the ominous “Gimme Shelter” remains a centerpiece of any Rolling Stones concert, and Jagger has a new onstage playmate in powerhouse background vocalist Chanel Haynes.

The woman who starred as Tina Turner in the West End musical of Turner’s life and officially became part of the band last year steamrolled through “Gimme Shelter” with a voice blaring attitude and vigor. As she and Jagger strolled the catwalk, sharing vocals and chemistry, Jagger wisely backed off a couple of times, allowing Haynes to unleash her theatrical verve.

But this is still Jagger’s circus, and whether he’s bobbing like a jittery prizefighter or wiggling his shoulders like the world’s most slender Chippendales dancer, he is an octogenarian who captivates.

The band has enlisted various openers throughout the tour. In Houston, blues-rock guitar ace – and Texas native – Gary Clark Jr. landed the opening-night slot and for 45 minutes enchanted the mostly full stadium.

With a large band – five musicians, three background vocalists – behind him, Clark was the epitome of cool in dark shades and a bandanna as he took the stage with “Maktub” from his recently released fourth album, “JPEG Raw.”

Clark is a big name for an opener (then again, it is the Rolling Stones) and he used his time well with massive licks on the crunch rockers “Bright Lights” and “This is Who We Are,” with singer Naala joining him.

The soul-inflected “Feed the Babies” seared as a set highlight as the singer/guitarist displayed sizzling playing and a breezy vibe for the crowd.

The Rolling Stones show no signs of slowing down as they begin their latest tour

The Rolling Stones are showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon

HOUSTON -- Time marches on and all good things must come to an end. But don’t tell that to The Rolling Stones.

What many believe to be the greatest rock ’n’ roll band in the world showed no signs of slowing down anytime soon as they kicked off their latest tour Sunday night at Houston’s NRG Stadium.

The Stones have been touring for more than 60 years. Frontman Mick Jagger and lead guitarist Keith Richards are both 80, with guitarist Ronnie Wood not far behind at 76. Their tour is being sponsored in part by AARP.

But during a vibrant two-hour show, the Stones played with the energy of band that was on tour for the first time.

“It’s great to be back in the Lone Star State,” Jagger told the packed stadium, filled with longtime fans, many wearing faded concert shirts from previous tours.

Jagger often strutted up and down the stage with seemingly boundless energy while Richards and Wood played many familiar guitar riffs beloved by fans. Jagger often led the audience in sing-alongs.

“The energy level is up and it’s always up with them. The age doesn’t show,” Dale Skjerseth, the Stones’ production director, said Friday before the concert.

The Stones have hit the road to support the release of their latest album, “Hackney Diamonds,” the band’s first record of original music since 2005.

Houston was the first stop on the band’s 16-city tour across the U.S. and Canada. Other cities on the tour include New Orleans, Philadelphia and Vancouver, British Columbia. The tour ends on July 17 in Santa Clara, California.

During Sunday's 18-song concert set list, the Stones played several tracks off the new record, including lead single “Angry.” They also played classics including “Sympathy for the Devil,” “Gimme Shelter,” Honky Tonk Women” and “Start Me Up.”

After playing “Beast of Burden,” Jagger said that concertgoers in Houston had voted to include it on the set list.

“You can’t go wrong with that,” one man in the audience could be heard screaming.

The Stones also played some unexpected choices, including “Rocks Off,” from their 1972 double album “Exile on Main St.” and “Out of Time,” a 1966 song that Jagger said during the concert had not ever been played by the band in the U.S.

With the 2021 death of drummer Charlie Watts, the Stones are now comprised of the core trio of Jagger, Richards and Wood. On Sunday, they were backed by various musicians including two keyboardists, a new drummer, backup singers and a brass section.

While the stage was surrounded by a large collection of video screens projecting images throughout the show, the main focus of the concert was the band and their songs

Before Sunday’s concert, Jagger spent time on Friday touring NASA’s Johnson Space Center in suburban Houston, posting photos on his Instagram account of him with astronauts inside Mission Control.

“I had an amazing trip to the space center,” Jagger said.

When asked if the band might be thinking about retiring, Skjerseth said he doubts that will happen.

“This is not the end. They’re very enthused,” he said.

This story has been updated to correct a song title to “Gimme Shelter,” not “Gimmer Shelter.”

Rolling Stones Kick-Start ‘Hackney Diamonds’ Tour With Thrilling Houston Concert

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Over the past couple of decades, the Rolling Stones have looked for any reason to hit the road besides the release of a new album of original songs. They’ve launched tours celebrating their 50th anniversary, reissues of select archival records, the 2016 covers LP Blue & Lonesome , and their 60th anniversary. Some years they headed out on the stadium circuit for no particular reason whatsoever, knowing a Stones tour is a major event in and of itself.

The first step was Houston’s NRG Stadium on Sunday night. After a strong opening set by Gary Clark Jr. that centered around his new LP, JPEG Raw , the band took the stage to the familiar opening notes of “Start Me Up.” This is the first time Mick Jagger has faced a stadium crowd since his 80th birthday last year, but his voice and body seem like they stopped aging sometime around Steel Wheels . It’s almost impossible to fully believe until you see it in person. (“People say Joe Biden is too old to be president,” an elderly woman behind me said early in the night. “They need to look at Mick!”)

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

He wasn’t kidding. The 1965 Aftermath track wasn’t played live once until their 2022 European tour, and this was the first time it crossed the Atlantic. But it’s not something you hear much on classic rock radio, and the audience reaction was pretty muted at first. “I don’t think you really knew it,” Jagger said at the end. “But you got to know it as it went along.”

The Hackney Diamonds portion of the evening began at this point with leadoff single “Angry,” which popped onstage much like it did during their surprise album release show at the New York club Racket last year. “Beast of Burden” won the fan vote for the night, and it provided veteran backup Stones singer Bernard Fowler with a much-deserved spotlight moment. “You’ve got one more vote in November,” Jagger said. “Don’t forget to vote then too. What to play now? Something old … something new.”

Rolling Stones Unveil 'Hackney Diamonds' Edition of Band's Crossfire Hurricane Rum

Neil young stuns at 2024 tour launch, unveils lost 'cortez the killer' verse, billie eilish, lorde, green day among artists to sign letter in support of ticketing reform act.

At the midway point of every Rolling Stones concert in recent memory, Jagger introduces the band one by one before heading offstage so Keith Richards can sing a couple of songs. For some reason, perhaps to squeeze more new songs into the set without cutting any of the standards, Richards was limited to just a single tune. He made it count by singing 1981’s “Little T & A” for the first time since 2016, though it was disappointing he didn’t get a chance to break out “Tell Me Straight” from Hackney Diamonds . It feels inevitable that’ll happen before this tour ends.

Jagger returned for “Sympathy for the Devil” and “Gimme Shelter,” which gave new background singer Chanel Haynes a chance to emerge from the wings and show off her stunning pipes. She first entered Stones World in 2022 when Sasha Allen, their previous background singer, couldn’t make a Milan show. Haynes was playing the lead role in the West End musical Tina at the time, and she parachuted in at the last second to save the show. This frustrated the producers of Tina , who fired her for handing the show off to her understudy that night when she wasn’t ill, but it impressed the Stones enough to hire her for this tour.

The main set wrapped up with “Honky Tonk Women,” “Miss You,” “Paint It Black,” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” These are songs they’ve done hundreds and hundreds of times for good reason. The hardcores may yearn for deeper cuts like “Memory Motel” or “Moonlight Mile,” but Jagger knows they’d cause many people to sit down and start scrolling through Instagram. And when you have a song like “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” in your repertoire, you simply have to play it every time you do a gig.

“Sweet Sounds of Heaven,” one of the finest songs on Hackney Diamonds , kicked off the brief encore set. If it wasn’t challenging enough to channel Merry Clayton a few songs back, Haynes had to now deliver Lady Gaga’s soaring vocal parts from the original recording. Unsurprisingly, she crushed it. For a moment, it really felt like witnessing a scene from some alternate-universe version of A Star Is Born.

The night closed out with a joyous “Satisfaction,” meaning they played just three songs from Hackney Diamonds. That’s typical for a tour in support of a latter-day Rolling Stones album, but this one really deserved more. They dropped “Midnight Rambler,” one of the Richards songs, and the acoustic set to make room for the three new ones in the show, but it be worth further restructuring to squeeze in “Whole Wide World,” “Bite My Head Off,” and “Tell Me Straight.” These are stellar songs that deserve a spot in the set, even if it means tossing aside “Paint It Black” or “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” sometimes.
