Rufus Wainwright: Folkocracy Tour

Rufus Wainwright: Folkocracy Tour

Opening Act: Lucy Wainwright Roche

One of the great male vocalists and songwriters of his generation, Rufus Wainwright performs music from his new release Folkocracy, in which he revisits his roots of childhood summers spent at folk festivals and watching his famous family on stage. Featuring Lucy Wainwright Roche and Petra Haden on back-up vocals and a four-piece band, the Folkocracy tour showcases Wainwright’s extraordinary vocal range and depth of interpretation. “Nobody sings quite like Rufus Wainwright” – The New Yorker

Folkocracy is Rufus Wainwright revisiting his roots, of childhood summers spent at folk festivals and watching his famous family on stage. But it’s also the sound of an artist in the present using all he has learnt from conquering pop to opera and showtunes.

“I’ve shied away from folk in the past, preferring the worlds of opera and pop. But the fact is I’m from a bona fide folkocracy who mixed extensively with other folkocracies such as the Seegers and the Thompsons. As I hurtle towards 50, I’m back where it all began.”

The album, Rufus’ 12th studio album released on June 2nd, features and all-star cast of guests including Brandi Carlile, Chaka Khan, David Byrne, Anohni, Sheryl Crow, John Legend, Nicole Scherzinger and his family of course among others. The album is a bit of a 50th birthday present to himself, invite the singers you have always admired to come and join you in the process. “Getting lots of guests was a given from the start,” says Rufus. “The key to folk is community and sharing a stage. But I didn’t want to make a duets record. We rode a fine line – guests, not duets.”

For the tour he has assembled a four piece band of amazing musicians and two incredible back-up singers, his sister Lucy Wainwright Roche and Petra Haden who will sing the parts of most of the guests from the album.

The set list will contain almost all songs from the album. He chose those 15 songs with producer Mitchell Froom, some are bona fide folk songs like Peggy Seeger’s “Heading for Home” or Ewan MacColl’s “Alone” but others are Wainwright’s interpretation of what constitutes a folk song today like The Mama’s and The Papa’s “Twelve-Thirty”, his own “Going to a Town”, or Moondog’s “High on a Rocky Ledge” which he first heard on a sultry Hawaiian New Year’s Eve.

The concept of cover songs will continue for the rest of the set list, picking songs Rufus recorded for his audible original “Roadtrip Elegies” at LA’s legendary folk venue McCabe’s Guitar Store. Those songs accompanied a car ride that he took frequently as a child from his mother’s home in Montreal to his dad’s of New York. This time in his car was his shrink and the entire conversation was recorded with the songs illuminating important stops on memory lane.

This additional material will contain some new songs by Rufus along with covers of among others Bob Dylan, Mina, and the late Burt Bacharach who Wainwright described on his January 2023 tour with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta as the “greatest living American songwriter”.

Not many musicians have the vocal range and depth of interpretation that Wainwright possesses or as The New Yorker simply put it “Nobody sings quite like Rufus Wainwright”. Nobody gives live shows quite like Rufus either. Expect Folkocracy!

Album Review: Rufus Wainwright, ‘Folkocracy’

rufus wainwright folkocracy tour setlist

Rufus Wainwright turns 50 on July 22, and what better way to celebrate with an album that’s a tribute the folk music that’s shaped him.

In the spirit of folk music, Wainwright gathers members of his own family—sisters Martha Wainwright and Lucy Wainwright Roche , aunt Anna McGarrigle , cousin Lily Lanken —and his extended family of musicians—including Madison Cunningham, Brandi Carlile, Susanna Hoffs, Chris Stills, Andrew Bird, and Van Dyke Parks , among many others—to join him in delivering versions of folk classics this gorgeous soundscape.

The setting of many of the songs on the album is spare, allowing the gravity or the fragility or elation of the lyrics to saturate the soul. Cunningham joins Wainwright on the meditative version of Ewan MacColl ’s “Alone,” conveying the mournful character of the original, while Cunningham and John Legend join Wainwright on “Heading for Home,” an orchestral ode to the pleasures and pain of coming home in which banjo plunks alternate with soaring strings. Hoffs, Sheryl Crow, and Chris Stills join in on the upbeat version of John Phillips ’ “Twelve-Thirty (Young Girls Are Coming to the Canyon)”; Wainwright’s version captures the joy and innocence of Laurel Canyon.

In the poignant murder ballad “Down in the Willow Garden,” Carlile and Wainwright evoke the tender sorrow, aching regret, and pensive melancholy embedded in love and loss. Andrew Bird ’s old-time violin leads off Wainwright’s version of Neil Young ’s “Harvest,” a lilting, spacious take that features Greg Leisz ’s unfurling lap steel runs and Bird’s and Chris Stills’ harmonies. ANOHNI joins Wainwright on a poignant reworking of Wainwright’s own “Going to a Town,” while his sisters Martha and Lucy lend their voices to the gyspy music-inflected of the traditional lullaby “Hush Little Baby.”

The album closes with a stirring take on the traditional “Wild Mountain Thyme,” on which Wainwright shares vocals with his sisters, cousin, aunt, and close family friend Chaim Tannenbaum . It’s almost anthemic and a fitting close to an album that celebrates a community, family, and folk music.

Folkocracy is a fitting birthday gift for Wainwright to give to himself, and it’s a multi-faceted little musical gem to give to his fans to open as they celebrate with him and his membership in this long line of folk musicians, the “folkocracy.”

Rufus Wainwright: Folkocracy [Album Review]

Brian Q. Newcomb | June 8, 2023 June 8, 2023 | Reviews

Rufus Wainwright Folkocracy BMG [2023]

While it took him 25 years, after making sophisticated pop albums both of the classic past and more modern pop as well as exploring the world of opera and classical music, Rufus Wainwright, the child of two well-known folk artists and what he describes as “a bona fide folkocracy,” has finally gotten around to making his own bona fide folk album, his charmingly titled, 11 th album, Folkocracy . Famously the son of singer-songwriters Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarricle, who was in the popular Canadian folk duo with her sister Anna McGarricle. In his album bio, Wainwright reflects on growing up attending folk festivals and watching his famous family members perform alongside members of other folk family dynasties, The Seegers and The Thompsons. Turns out Teddy Thompson, an occasional collaborator of his, who is also the son of famous musicians Richard and Linda Thompson, had gathered his own ‘folkocracy’ together for the 2014 album, “ Family ,” but Wainwright has imagined a larger collection of collaborators, including John Legend, Chaka Khan, Sheryl Crow, and David Byrne as well as his singing sisters Martha Wainwright and Lucy Wainwright Roche.

Two of the folkiest of the 15 tracks here, are indeed genuine American folk classics, the omnipresent lullaby, “Hush Little Baby,” sung in familial harmony with his two sisters, Martha and Lucy, “papa’s gonna buy you a mockingbird.” But the album closes with “Wild Mountain Thyme,” sung again with his sisters and ups the ante with his late mother’s sister, Anna McGarricle playing on accordion and singing their singing partner Chaim Tannenbaum singing and playing banjo. It’s a lush, historic collaboration that points back to that larger family legacy and true “folkocracy” to which the nearly 50-year-old Wainwright has now chosen to celebrate.

But Wainwright’s not just tripping down memory lane, he resurrects a Southern folk traditional, “Cotton Eyed Joy,” delivered as a classic soul ballad with none other than Chaka Khan; and he gives an orchestrated duet delivery of “Heading for Home,” the original song by Peggy Seeger (Pete’s sister), trading vocal lines with John Legend while a banjo mixes with the orchestra. The album opens with “Alone,” an older Scottish folk song, written by Ewan McColl, who had been married to Peggy Seeger later in his life, Wainwright singing with female Americana vocalist and guitarist Madison Cunningham, who plays guitar on a handful of the other tracks as well. It’s worth taking note of Mitchell Froom’s production, who often leans toward a less is more approach that tends to serve these songs and Wainwright’s intent to a T. Froom has been closely associated with Crowded House of late, but he’s produced great albums for the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Los Lobos, Richard Thompson, Peter Case, and Maria McKee.

Two of the darker folk traditions get served up nicely. The murder ballad “Down in the Willow Garden,” is sung as sweetly as can be with Brandi Carlile, obscuring the dark narrative. While “High on a Rocky Ledge” is an original song by a blind New York City street-musician who was the “Viking of Sixth Avenue,” called Moondog, whose real name was Louis Hardin. Wainwright and veteran New Yorker David Byrne, sung like an English sonnet, “to my lady fair,” in a suicide pact, of course.

There are a couple of smart nods to the folk pop & rock movements of the late 60’s and early 70’s, worthy of note. Neil Young’s lovely “Harvest” gets CSN styled 3-part harmonies, Wainwright singing with Andrew Bird, who also plays some fine violin, and Chris Stills, none other than the son of Stephen. I know here in the post-modern world there’s little appreciation for irony, but as the song comes to its final lines, you have to think that Rufus is enjoying singing Neil’s line about “the promise of a man,” completely straight. Well, in his own way. Another nod goes to The Mama’s & The Papa’s on John Phillips’ “Twelve-Thirty (Young Girls Are Coming to the Canyon), getting the desired four-part harmonies again with Stills, but standing in for the Mama’s are Susanna Hoffs and Sheryl Crow, again to just lovely results.

And then as a reminder that he also has written songs that serve the tradition as well, Wainwright offers up one of his own compositions, “Going to a Town,” a sad song about the failure of the American dream, song again with a thoughtful duet partner, Anohni, the English-born trans singer. Going to the farthest reaches of America, Wainwright serves up the native folk of the Hawaiian Islands, where he now makes his home, acknowledging getting schooled in the native language to sing properly “Kaulana Na Pua,” where he’s joined by another native, Nicole Scherzinger who is also the lead singer with the Pussycat Dolls.

The remaining tracks find Wainwright serving up classics like “Shenandoah” and “Arthur McBride,” and then somehow manages to hum his way through Schubert’s “Nacht und Traume,” while “Black Gold” gets the full Van Dyke Parks treatment, with orchestration arranged as if it’s a tango set in the Old West, or actually at sea. There’s no doubt that Rufus Wainwright is an artist who committed to follow his own drummer, and he’s a fine, fine singer. Here he does more than pay his dues to the genetic and cultural world that set him on the path of musical artistry, he develops and expands the traditional roots music formula, proving that it not only has lasting value as a romantic reminder of what once was, but has found ways to reshape and reinvent ways that the folk music tradition remains as vital and relevant as the nightly news. Who could ask for more from a living legacy and a self-declared Folkocracy .

Rufus Wainwright Shares Star-Studded New Album 'Folkocracy'

Article contributed by big hassle media | published on friday, june 2, 2023.

rufus wainwright folkocracy tour setlist

Today 2x GRAMMY® Award-nominated singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright shares the eagerly-awaited new album FOLKOCRACY , available now at all DSPs and streaming services HERE . The star-studded collection of folk music reinventions arrives via BMG in a range of formats including digital download, CD, and vinyl.

"Folk music always has a menacing quality,” Wainwright explains. “It’s a genre that plays with both the light and the dark and the battle between those two. Unlike disco or most pop music, where you’re trying to create a whole new world that’s about escapism or crafting a fantasy land, folk music is rooted in the real, and therefore it’s timeless. It doesn’t belong to any particular era.” Rufus Wainwright in No Depression

Singles also include “Heading Home (feat. John Legend),” a joyous rendition of the Peggy Seeger folk standard, and “Harvest (feat. Andrew Bird & Chris Stills),” a reinterpretation of the Neil Young classic.

Wainwright – joined by a six-piece band and special guests including Chaka Khan, Van Dyke Parks, Susanna Hoffs, Lucy Wainwright Roche, Richard Parks, and Madison Cunningham – will celebrate Folkocracy with a one-night-only Release Day concert event set for Los Angeles, CA’s Walt Disney Concert Hall today, Friday, June 2. In addition, a wide range of international live dates is set through the summer, with diverse dates around the globe through late July. A full slate of North American, EU, and UK dates will be announced soon. For complete details and remaining ticket availability, please visit rufuswainwright.com/tour .

Folkocracy – which follows Wainwright’s most recent studio album, 2020’s GRAMMY® and Juno Award-nominated Unfollow The Rules – sees the critically acclaimed artist celebrating his upcoming 50th birthday by revisiting his roots, of childhood summers spent at folk festivals and watching his famous family on stage. Wainwright is joined on his journey into the past by an all-star cast of special guests that includes Brandi Carlile, John Legend, Chaka Khan, Nicole Scherzinger, Van Dyke Parks, and Madison Cunningham, to name only a few. The 15 songs featured on Folkocracy include folk standards from around the world along with a unique reframing of Franz Schubert’s “Nacht und Träume” as well as a spellbinding rerecording of his own “Going To A Town,” featuring his longtime friend ANOHNI. Highlights include the sensual “High On A Rocky Ledge (feat. David Byrne),” a gorgeous, expertly harmonized take on The Mamas & The Papas’ “Twelve-Thirty (Young Girls Are Coming To The Canyon)” featuring Sheryl Crow, Susannah Hoffs, and Chris Stills, and the album-closing “Wild Mountain Thyme,” a song Wainwright grew up singing with his sisters, Martha Wainwright and Lucy Wainwright Roche, both of whom join him on the new rendition along with aunt Anna McGarrigle, cousin Lily Lanken, and close family friend Chaim Tannenbaum, the latter playing Rufus’s late mother Kate McGarrigle’s iconic banjo.

“The older I get, the more I appreciate how valuable my folk knowledge is, to have had it ingrained in me as a child,” Wainwright says. “I’m from a bona fide folkocracy who mixed extensively with other folkocracies such as the Seegers and the Thompsons. I spun off into opera and pop. Now I’m back where it all began.”

On June 24, Round Records & ATO Records will release GarciaLive Volume Six: July 5, 1973 – Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders, the latest installment of the celebrated GarciaLive archival series. The three-CD set was recorded at the 200 capacity Lion’s Share club formerly located in the small town of San Anselmo, CA, just 20 miles north of San Francisco. The performance features Jerry Garcia performing with friend, mentor and legendary keyboardist/vocalist Merl Saunders. The duo is joined by drummer Bill Vitt and bassist John Kahn, who soon became a lifelong Garcia collaborator.

Pepsi Rock Series Handcrafted by American Metal

With Special Guest Lucy Wainwright Roche

About the artist.

Praised by the New York Times for his “genuine originality,” Rufus Wainwright has established himself as one of the great male vocalists, songwriters, and composers of his generation. He has released eleven studio albums, three live albums (including the Grammy-nominated Rufus Does Judy at Carnegie Hall ), and has collaborated with artists such as Elton John, Burt Bacharach, Miley Cyrus, Joni Mitchell, Billy Joel, and many others. He has also written two operas, numerous songs for movies and TV.

To celebrate his 50th birthday, he released his 12 th studio album of folk songs and duets featuring among others Chaka Khan, Sheryl Crow, Brandi Carlile, and John Legend.

For the tour he has assembled a four piece band of amazing musicians and two incredible back-up singers; his sister Lucy Wainwright Roche and Petra Haden who will sing the parts of most of the guests from the album.

Not many musicians have the vocal range and depth of interpretation that Wainwright possesses or as The New Yorker simply put it, “Nobody sings quite like Rufus Wainwright.”

What is the difference between these 2 Moscow metro tours on the same tour group page? One is less expensive than the other but both have positive reviews.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
