The Ultimate Two Week Travel Itinerary for Kenya And Tanzania

Kenya and Tanzania are at the top of the bucket list for many people and perhaps the first things that come to mind when you think of a “safari”. Surreal landscapes, towering mountains, warm culture, and the most fantastic safaris African offer are just a few things you can expect from these two countries. The Masai Mara and Serengeti are also home to the Great Migration where millions of Wildebeests and Zebras cross from one reserve to the other attracting lurking predators making for the best safari experience you can imagine.

As Kenya and Tanzania share a border, it is very feasible to do the two countries together as part of the same trip. Like my two weeks spent in Peru and Bolivia , two weeks in Kenya and Tanzania is also a tight squeeze. You’ll be on the go constantly but you will end up seeing the main highlights of the two countries. I would recommend at least 4 weeks to see the two countries but that’s not the world we live in and who has 4 weeks off to travel somewhere??

In addition, this post will feature two itineraries: budget+midrange, and luxury (near the end of the post).

Where I went in Kenya and Tanzania

I came to East Africa in September which was at the tail end of the migration. The heart of the migration is in the month of August. I still was able to witness an insane amount of wildlife although not the crossing of the wildebeests. Expect to pay much higher rates during this period and be prepared to book accommodations well in advance!

Kenya and Tanzania share the same seasons. The dry season running from June to October offers the best game viewing in both countries. The rainy season runs from Dec to Apr with shoulder seasons in between.

In total, this itinerary is perfect for anyone with  14-16 days  to see both countries. These are the highlights of the trip

• Ngorongoro Crater

If these places ring a bell and sound like the places you want to visit, this is the perfect itinerary for you! I did my trip in that specific order but it is easy to mix and match depending on what you want to see.

Zanzibar is a beach destination and if this isn’t your jam, then consider doing a hike up Mount Kilimanjaro after the safaris in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. Alternatively, the beaches around Mombasa, Kenya are just as pristine as Zanzibar but at a fraction of the costs and tourist numbers.

I did the entire trip on an overland tour with Acacia Africa. An overland trip will be more expensive than doing it yourself but I’d highly recommend them if you are one or two people and you don’t want the hassle of planning the trip. In addition, you get to meet some amazing people that will keep you entertained the entire trip. This itinerary focuses on those that are not planning to do an overland tour! Is Kenya and Tanzania Safe to Travel?

This is a common question I always get about traveling through Africa. It’s not unfounded as you’re constantly being bombarded by the media in Western countries about crime statistics, poverty, political unrest and the like.

I’ve traveled extensively all around Africa and it’s like any other developing part of the world I’ve been to. There are some sketchy pockets but the vast majority of the country is completely fine. This is like  every country I’ve ever been to , first world or third world. Like South Africa’s safety  or Egypt’s safety , the big cities see more crime, and potential for crime picks up at night time. Avoid flashing the cash, reciprocate the friendly attitudes of the locals, try the local food and drinks, and you’ll be fine.

Visas for Kenya and Tanzania

Visas for the two countries can be purchased at the border or airport and do not require any preparation before hand. The Kenyan visa costs  $50 USD . Make sure your USD bills are crisp, post 2006 bills. They will turn away bills with wear and tear without hesitation.

For Tanzania, the fee is  $100 USD  for American citizens. All other Western countries (UK, EU, AU, CA etc.) will pay  $50 USD.  Not sure why Americans have to pay more here but perhaps something to do with reciprocation.

As of 2016, Tanzania has pulled out of the East Africa Visa which let people travel Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda on one visa for $100 USD. If you are planning to visit Uganda or Rwanda after this trip, it will make sense to purchase the East Africa Visa. Otherwise, it’s more economical to just purchase the Kenyan visa by itself.

Budget vs Not Budget Travel in Kenya and Tanzania

Africa is not a cheap place to travel with the exception of South Africa (which is very easy and cheap to travel through) . Sure the locals live off next to nothing but you’re not coming here to live like a local. You’re coming here to go on a safari and do touristy things. These safari experiences have long been catered to older wealthier retirees with money to spend.

Unlike South Africa’s Kruger which has accommodation and safari options in all price ranges, the offerings are much more scarce in Kenya and Tanzania.

For budget travelers, you can expect to stay in a tent if you want to keep costs below $100 a night. If you can spend $200-$400, you can expect to stay in a modest permanent tent with some amenities in place.

For luxury travelers , you can easily spend over $1,000 a night for a ridiculous 5* all inclusive lodge that has more amenities than you could ever imagine.

Full Kenya and Tanzania Itinerary

The Itinerary starts in Nairobi, the defacto International Hub of Eastern Africa. Nairobi’s International airport is world class and flights from all around the world come here. It’s most likely that the cheapest and easiest flights you can find will arrive here.

From Nairobi, head to the Masai Mara for an epic 3 day/2 night Big 5 safari in one of the most epic game reserves in Africa. Return to Nairobi before either taking the bus to Arusha or flying to Kilimanjaro. From these towns, an even more epic safari to the Serengeti for 3 days/2 nights and Ngorongoro Crater for 2 days/1 night awaits.

Then you will return to either Arusha or Kilimanjaro. A flight to Zanzibar is in order after this where you’ll spend the next 5-6 nights in paradise.

Day 1-2: Explore Nairobi

My flight landed in Nairobi around noon time. Because there is so much to do in this itinerary, I would elect to spend less time in Kenya’s capital and more time seeing the game reserves. There are plenty of things to do in Nairobi for tourists but like most African capitals, it is hectic and not a picturesque place. But like most African capitals, once you dedicate the time and effort to exploring the town (and meeting some cool locals), the place really opens up and is actually quite fun. For the purpose of this itinerary which is focused on tourism, Nairobi will just be a stopover before the Masai Mara.

As I had my whole afternoon to explore at my leisure, I went to the Giraffe Center. I very much enjoyed my visit here to learn and interact with giraffes. It is about 45 minutes from the downtown area but with  Uber readily available in Nairobi nowadays, it is very easy and incredibly affordable to visit. For a 40 minute Uber ride to the Giraffe Sanctuary, expect to pay under 1,000 shillings. The entrance fee for the Giraffe Sanctuary is 1,000 shillings.

From the Giraffe Sanctuary, have dinner at the famous Carnivore restaurant. This is a Brazilian Churascarria style restaurant that serves many different cuts of meat. Unlike the Carnivore in Johannesburg , this location does  not serve any game meats.

Where to stay in Nairobi:  For budget travelers, I recommend the Wildebeest Eco Camp  and for middle end accommodation, I recommend  Salmiya Place.

Day 2-4: Masai Mara

Finally, on to the good stuff! From Nairobi, it’s time to visit the famous Masai Mara. During July and August, if luck is on your side, you may be able to see the Great Migration. Literally millions of Wildebeests and Zebras cross from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara to seek new food sources. Lions and other predators follow suit making this a prime time to view the Big 5 in action!

There are hundreds of tour companies in Nairobi that will offer to book your Masai Mara tour. You can join an overland tour like  Acacia Africa  or  Nomad  or  G Adventures , where you you will travel in a truck for the next two weeks visiting the highlights I have mentioned. You’ll also meet other travelers which can and will make the trip a lot more enjoyable!

Booking a Masai Mara Safari

Booking a safari to the Masai Mara can be complicated. You need to book your accommodation in the Masai Mara, but this usually doesn’t include game drives (unless you’re staying in a luxury lodge) which will cost extra but that’s the whole point of coming here so you’ll want to pay for this. You will also need to book a car transfer from Nairobi. My advice? Book everything all in one.

My preferred choice of accommodation on a budget is  Mara Explorers Camp and Backpackers which is next door to the  Enkolong Camp , another good option. The rates at these places are all inclusive of meals which are basic but still tasty. For a tent, expect to pay 5000 shillings a night per person and up to 8000 shillings a night for a little cottage. The best option is just to book their safari packages which include accommodation, food, transfer to and from Nairobi, and all game drives. These normally run $400-$500 per person for 3 days and 2 nights.

The schedule works like such:

• Pick up early in the morning from Nairobi
• Arrive in Masai Mara in the afternoon, just in time for a sunset drive
• Full day game drive on day 2
• Morning game drive on day 3 before arriving back in Nairobi at 17:00-18:00h

Where to stay in Masai Mara:  For budget travelers, Mara Explorers Camp and Backpackers Lodge , or Enkolong Camp . For midrange travelers, the Sekenani Camp.

Day 5: Nairobi to Arusha

After returning from an amazing Masai Mara safari, the next step is to reach Arusha, the gateway to Tanzania’s Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. From Nairobi, there are numerous bus companies that make the journey to Arusha.

There are two companies I have experience with, Riverside Shuttle and Marangu Shuttles.  The cost for this transfer is $25-$30 USD one way. They will pick you up from your accommodation in Nairobi as well. The vans/buses that they use are actually quite comfortable.

The Namanga border crossing can be quite a disaster at times but overall, the journey will take 4-6 hours depending on traffic on the road and at the border. Remember to have USD cash ready for the Tanzanian visa.

US Citizens need to pay $100 USD while other Western countries pay $50. Make sure the cash bills are crisp without any wear and tear.

What to do in Arusha

The transfer arrives in Arusha in the early afternoon. This is too late to go to the Serengeti right away as those trips only leave in the mornings (like in the Masai Mara). Don’t worry, there is plenty in Arusha to occupy you for a half day.

Accommodations in Arusha are in abundance and fairly cheap. I would recommend staying at the  White House of Tanzania  which is run by an amazing family. Loads of travelers stay here before going to the Serengeti which makes for a fun place to meet people.

Go for a Masai village walk here which is quite interesting and insightful. I loved my stay in Arusha and could have used another day to be honest. The food in town is delicious and the views of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance is stunning as well!

Day 6-8: Serengeti Safari

Having been to a dozen different major game reserves on the continent, the Serengeti is firmly at the number 1 spot. The sheer abundance of wildlife here is stunning as I saw the Big5 within an hour, and the landscape is as picturesque as you can imagine. It’s the first image that comes to mind when you think of a safari. The Lion King movie is based off the Serengeti after all which is perhaps why the Serengeti comes to mind first for so many people.

Like the Masai Mara, the Serengeti is also expensive and the options are few. You can either do a camping safari for budget prices, or spring out for the ultra luxury lodges that can eclipse prices of $2,000 per night. There are various mid range options as well for $250-400 a night which I would highly recommend doing if you can swing it!

I would recommend 2 nights in the Serengeti and 1 night in the Ngorongoro Crater for a total of 4 days and 3 nights for the two parks. The Serengeti is 6-8 hours west of Arusha and the Ngorongoro Crater is 4-5 hours west of Arusha. It is very common to do these two parks on the same trip as they are both along the same road.

Where to stay in the Serengeti:  For budget travelers, you will likely be staying at a campsite within the outer ring of the park (still inside the park) as a part of a budget safari tour. For mid range, stay at the  Mbalageti Serengeti Camp.

Day 8-9: Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro crater is next up on the itinerary. This is one of my favorite places in Tanzania and the game viewing is spectacular. It’s much smaller than the Serengeti so one significant game drive is enough to get a feel for the area. Most tours will spent just 1 night in the Ngorongoro crater with a long game drive in the morning.

Due to its size and its crater shape, there are many animals densely packed in allowing for some fantastic game viewing. There are not many options to stay here, and everyone that is camping will be staying at the Ngorongoro Simba Campsite  which I found nice enough. If you want something a little nicer that is not camping, try the Rhino Lodge which is about $300 per night.

Where to stay in Ngorongoro Crater: For budget travelers, you’ll likely be staying in the  Ngorongoro Simba Campsite.  For midrange travelers, I recommend the  Pembani Rhotia

Day 10: Getting to Zanzibar from Arusha

From Arusha, there are two ways to get to Zanzibar; take a bus to Dar Es Salaam and then a ferry to Zanzibar, or fly. While the traditional backpacker way would be to take a bus and the ferry, I’m here to say that flying is the much better option.

Firstly, the bus ride from Arusha to Dar Es Salaam is long and arduous. The total journey time is 10-12 hours. Then you’ll have to overnight in Dar Es Salaam or a nearby town before taking the ferry to Zanzibar the following day. There are some cool little towns around Dar Es Salaam like Bagamoyo but it’s not worth the trouble to go all the way there just to stay a night. While the journey by road does offer some fantastic scenery and rustic experiences of the Tanzanian country-side, your precious time is much better spent Zanzibar with just two weeks!

Therefore, I would highly recommend taking a 1 hr flight from Kilimanjaro Airport or Arusha Airport to Zanzibar. Numerous airlines make the flight (Air Tanzania, Precision Air, ZanAir). These flights cost $100-$150 for a one way flight from Kilimanjaro and slightly more from Arusha.

For comparison, the bus from Arusha to Dar Es Salaam is $25. You’ll also need to pay to get to the bus station in Arusha and then to get to your guesthouse when you arrive in Dar Es Salaam, so add another $15 to that price and you get $40 for the bus transfer. The ferry from Dar Es Salaam to Zanzibar is $35 one way so the total cost to get from Arusha to Zanzibar is at least $75 USD.

That’s not a big savings when you compare it to a flight!

Day 10-15: Stone Town and Zanzibar

The last part of the trip is enjoying the culture and pristine beaches of Zanzibar. You can’t go wrong with any itinerary in Zanzibar to be honest but do know that the island itself is very large and getting around is expensive. Having a plan of attack is definitely necessary. With 5 nights, you can adequately explore a bit of the island.

Stone Town, Zanzibar City

Stone Town is the starting point for most visitors to Zanzibar. It’s the largest city on Zanzibar Island and is one of the most fascinating cities in Africa. It reminds me a bit of Ilha De Mozambique . Spices from all around the world were brought to Zanzibar in the old days and are harvested to this day. It’s also a giant melting pot of cultures as African, Arabian, and Indian all converge on one island. The result is some incredibly unique and delicious food.

There are no nice beaches in Stone Town but the food and cultural experience alone is worth at least a night. If you’re looking for a budget trip to Zanzibar, I would stay 2 nights in Stone Town to explore the markets, go on a Spice Tour, and visit the historic sites like the slave markets. Then spend 3 nights in a beach destination like Nungwi or Kendwa

Beaches in Zanzibar

Zanzibar is perhaps known for two things: Pristine Indian ocean beaches and the birthplace of Freddy Mercury. Focusing on the beaches part, Zanzibar has a long coastline of turquoise waters and white sandy beaches. The resorts are scattered all along Zanzibar’s coast with the highest concentration on the eastern part of the island.

The whole Eastern side of the island is one long atoll reef. Like the Quirimbas Archipelago in Mozambique , the tide movements are quite drastic. In the mornings, it’s possible to walk out a half kilometer on the sandy beach.

Zanzibar has fantastic scuba diving and snorkeling, as well as a myriad of other water activities on tap like kitesurfing, windsurfing, the Safari Blue day trip, and the ultra famous Rock Restaurant.

Where to stay in Zanzibar:  For budget travelers, Garden Beach Bungalows, Sagando, and Paje hotels can be booked for under $50/night. For a slightly better experience, I’d recommend Queen of Sheba, Zanzistar, and Mnana Beach Bungalows. You can find rooms at these mid-range accommodations for around $100 a night.

For a higher price range, stay at the Dreams of Zanzibar Hotel in the Northeast area of Kiwengwa. You can get an all inclusive stay for 2 people for $300-350 a night. The food here was absolutely fantastic and the rooms were a treat especially after 10 days of (not so difficult) camping.

Here is a day by day breakdown of my two week Kenya and Tanzania itinerary.

Luxury Travel Itinerary For Kenya and Tanzania

Luxury travel around Kenya and Tanzania is a whole different ballgame. You may as well disregard everything above this section! If you’re going on a honeymoon or if money is of no object (or both), this is the itinerary for you.

There will be no 7 hour car rides or waiting 2 hours at the border for no reason other than it just being Africa. No tents with sleeping bags, and certainly no drop toilets. For luxury safari seekers, this is the perfect itinerary for you. Note that it is of course possible to combine elements of a luxury trip with a more budget trip, it all just depends on how much money you want to spend.

Flying everywhere in Kenya and Tanzania

Believe it or not, there are actually flights from Nairobi to the Masai Mara, the Mara to the Serengeti, the Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater, and from the crater to Arusha or Kilimanjaro. Technically, you do  not need to take any bus rides in Kenya and Tanzania if you don’t want to. Not a single one!  Safari Link  is a charter airline that flies within Kenya to all the little airstrips in the Masai Mara.  Coastal Aviation is its counterpart in Tanzania.

Fly from Nairobi to the Masai Mara

Instead of the grueling 7 hour drive from Nairobi to the Masai Mara, take a flight with Safari Link airlines instead. From Nairobi, there are two daily flights to the Masai Mara. Your lodge will pick you up from the airstrip when you arrive. Expect to pay around $200 USD for a one way flight.

Fly from the Masai Mara to the Serengeti

This one is a bit trickier. There are no direct roads leading from the Mara to the Serengeti even though it might look like it does on a map. For the average traveler, getting from the Masai mara to the Serengeti involves going back to Nairobi, taking a bus to Arusha, and then a transfer to the Serengeti the following day. All in all, about 2 full days of travel.

Alternatively, you can fly from the Masai Mara back to Nairobi, and take another flight to Kilimanjaro Airport. Kilimanjaro airport is the larger more central airport in Tanzania (about 1 hour east of Arusha). There are multiple daily flights from Nairobi to Kilimanjaro airport. From Kilimanjaro Airport, take a land transfer to the Serengeti (7-8 hours).

This is all a lot of work. There must be a way to just fly direct from the Masai Mara to the Serengeti right? The answer is  yes .

Coastal Aviation in conjunction with  Safari Link offers flights between the two reserves. From the Masai Mara, take a Safari Link flight to Migori Airstrip , which is the border town of Kenya and Tanzania. From Migori, you’ll take a car transfer to Tarime, Tanzania which is included in the price of the airfare. Similar to crossing the Peru-Bolivia border , Safari link can only operate in Kenya and Coastal Aviation only in Tanzania.

From Tarime, take the Coastal Aviation flight to Arusha. There are numerous airstrips within the Serengeti where different ultra luxury lodges reside, and this Coastal Aviation flight stops at each of them like a bus.

Fly from the Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Crater

Continue with Coastal Aviation and take the flight to Lake Manyara where your lodge in the Ngorongoro crater will pick you up. It’s a 1 hour car transfer from Lake Manyara airport to the Ngorongoro Crater.

Fly from the Ngorongoro Crater to Zanzibar

From Lake Manyara, take Coastal Aviation to Arusha or Kilimanjaro. Both airports offer regular daily transfers to Zanzibar. You also don’t need to continue flying with Coastal Aviation if you don’t want but it might be easier just to continue with them all the way to Zanzibar.

Luxury Lodge Options in Kenya and Tanzania

There are so many expensive lodging options that anyone not planning a luxury trip will be sad to read this section. You have been warned. I will list the options by luxury ($350-$1,000 a night for two people) and ultra luxury (Over $1,000 a night for two people).

Note that the Serengeti is absolutely massive and if you are targeting a visit during the migration months, I would recommend staying in the Northern section of the Serengeti. This is where all the action will be as the herds migrate from the Serengeti into the Masai Mara.

Wow! This is so detailed and helpful! I’ve always just considered choosing between Kenya or Tanzania. Both countries have their own unique attractions. I think in the end it all boils down to what you are really up for during the trip. I hear if you’re leaning towards a vibrant city nightlife coupled with amazing natural landmarks then Kenya is the place to be. But if you’re more into enjoying the vast wilderness and wildlife plus a relaxing time at the beach then Tanzania is ideal. I guess getting to enjoy the best of both would definitely be ideal, just like how you did it.

I would agree with that! Nairobi definitely has a vibrant city life and the Serengeti in Tanzania for me is the ultimate wildlife experience.

The Tanzanian government has been leaning towards Southern Africa than East Africa. This also makes it difficult for Kenya tour vehicles with Kenyan registration plates to enter Tanzania parks.

That is interesting to hear! So do you think the chances that Tanzania resumes their participation in the East Africa Visa is slim?

Yeah i wouldn’t count on it. Last year a group of maasai herdsmen crossed over from Kenya to Tanzania and their cows were seized and auctioned. You gotta remember these borders are really just on the map in most areas so its hard to even know where Kenya ends and Tanzania begins.

After breakfast you will travel from the Tarangire Area to the Lake Manyara National Park. The park is known for its over 400 bird species, primate-filled forests and grassy plains. A large area of the park is covered by the alkaline Lake Manyara, the seasonal breeding grounds for large colonies of flamingos and many more waterfowls. The park is also home to giraffes, hippos, wildebeests, impalas and groups of noisy monkeys and baboons. After an extensive game drive, you will travel to Karatu in the Ngorongoro highlands. After your arrival, there might be time for an optional walk in the coffee plantations to learn more about coffee production. You will spend the night at one of the three beautifully located Tanganyika Wilderness Adventure Lodges

If you travel during the Great Migration season (between late July to September), you might be lucky to witness the herds crossing the area. This is an ecosystem of vast grasslands prowled by cheetah, peppered with acacia thickets in which leopards lurk, and divided by the Mara, Sand and Talek rivers.

The Masai Mara is a big cat territory, with healthy populations of lion, leopard and cheetah. There are elephant, buffalo and rhino, completing the Big 5, plus nearly 500 recorded bird species to spot. You will enjoy some amazing wildlife viewing, and delicious meals.

In addition of the game drives, we have included 1 night drive and 1 walking safari during your stay. Throughout the year, Tarangire is home to large herds of elephants and buffalo and a high concentration of big cats. There are also animals such as wild dogs, kudu, oryx and gerenuks that won’t be found in the north of Tanzania. And for birders, there are more than 550 species, many of which are attracted to the park’s swamps.

Back at camp, your private deck is the perfect place to sit with a cold drink and enjoy the stillness and serenity of the African bush.

Your stay includes your meals, the selected in-house activities at Gibb's and we have included a full day game drive in the Ngorongoro Crater. The Crater boasts approximately 25 000 large animals and has one of the densest populations of lions anywhere in Tanzania. You will be collected from the farm early in the morning in closed safari vehicle with a pop-up roof for 360° views.

Back at Gibb's where you will be encouraged to immerse in the rhythms of the farm and enjoy a sense of tranquility and well-being. Awaken to the sound of bird call and while-away the days sipping on freshly roasted coffee grown on the farm.

After breakfast, transfer to the airstrip for the flight to the North of the Serengeti. This area has amazing wildlife all year long, and typically receives the migrating herds from end of June to September, depending on the weather pattern.

Once the migrating herds have travelled back to the southern Serengeti in December, you can experience much more privacy with fewer tourists and vehicles around the national park. This is the period of time when safari veterans like to visit and enjoy having these vast plains to themselves. There is still have plenty of wildlife around, including lions and cheetahs. You might see elephants and rhinos and even leopards lurking in the riverine forests.

Back at camp, Sayari’s rim-flow pool is set between natural rock formations for guests to cool off in while watching elephants or zebras ambling past camp. After a dip, treat yourself to a beer at the Serengeti’s first solar-powered microbrewery before an afternoon game drive and sundowners around the campfire.

Day 2 Nairobi/Lake Nakuru National Park

Depart early for Lake Nakuru, known for harbouring flocks of pink flamingos and a rich variety of bird species. Arrive at our safari lodge inside Lake Nakuru National Park in time for lunch, and seek out the resident rhinos on a late afternoon wildlife drive.

Set out on morning and afternoon safaris through the picturesque park, searching for buffalo, impalas, lions, and more; and drive along the salty shores of Lake Nakuru to discover a mind-boggling variety of birds.

Day 4 Lake Nakuru National Park/Lake Naivasha

This morning attend a talk given by a representative of the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS)—a government institution dedicated to managing the country’s wildlife—about the issues surrounding poaching and wildlife conservation. Later head south through the Great Rift Valley to Lake Naivasha, a large freshwater lake surrounded by grassy banks and olive trees. Cruise the lake on a boat, watching for hippos and buffalo; and peer through your binoculars to spot lovebirds, ibis, and the African fish eagle. Step ashore at Crescent Island—a peaceful wildlife sanctuary located in the middle of the lake— and enjoy a guided stroll in search of wildebeest, zebras, and giraffes.

Travel to the legendary Masai Mara National Reserve and settle into our comfortable tented camp, located in the heart of the reserve. Head out for an afternoon safari through vast, acacia-dotted plains, driving past throngs of wildebeest, zebra, and giraffes; and keep an eye out for lions, elephants, and the rest of the African “big five.” In the evening, relax at the camp and enjoy scenic views of the rolling plains.

Day 6 Masai Mara

Venture out on an early morning safari to track the animals that traversed the savanna during the night. View ungulates like Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelles, topi and eland antelopes—as well as their stealthy predators—at one of their most active times of the day. Continue your exploration on a late afternoon safari, discovering the timeless landscapes of Masai Mara.

Day 7 Masai Mara/Nairobi

Witness a breathtaking sunrise over the savanna during your final safari in Masai Mara, and head back to Nairobi. Stop en route at Café Ubuntu, a G Adventures–supported Planeterra project that trains and employs local women and mothers of children with disabilities. Café Ubuntu is an oasis with delicious organic food, hospitable staff, and a relaxing atmosphere based in Maai Mahiu. It is a beacon for tourists who drive through the area each year on their way to the famous Maasai Mara conservancy. Learn about how the initiative empowers the community, visit the craft centre to meet some of the women who create the wares sold there, and then sit down for a delicious farm-to-table lunch. Options range from breakfast tacos, soups, and salads, to freshly made pizzas, curry dishes, and burritos.

Day 8 Nairobi/Arusha

Fly to Arusha, gateway to the Serengeti and the northern parks of Tanzania, and settle into your lodge.

Day 9 Arusha/Lake Manyara National Park

This morning, make your way to Mto wa Mbu village, a vibrant settlement of Tanzania’s diverse tribal groups. Take a guided walk through the village, visiting the local market and meeting artisans in their workshops; then sit down for a traditional lunch with a local family. Continue to the Rift Valley escarpment and settle into our safari camp, located at the edge of Lake Manyara National Park. Set out on our first safari drive to discover East Africa’s legendary wildlife, searching for lions, elephants, hippos, giraffes, and more.

Day 10 Lake Manyara National Park/Serengeti National Park

Travel through the breathtaking Rift Valley en route to our safari camp in Serengeti National Park. Enjoy a stop along the way at the Olduvai Gorge Museum and Visitor’s Centre—located near the site where National Geographic archaeologists Louis and Mary Leakey discovered early hominid fossils and stone tools in 1960. From here, continue to the world-famous Serengeti National Park and head out on a late afternoon safari drive across the Serengeti Plain, keeping an eye out for grazing giraffes, lounging lions, and herds of antelope in the golden light.

Day 11 Serengeti National Park

Immerse yourself in the splendor of the Serengeti, one of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife reserves. Discover the park’s iconic creatures when you set out in a 4x4 on morning and afternoon safaris through the golden grasslands. With luck, spot all of Africa’s “big five”—lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo. Later, visit the Serengeti Wildlife Research Centre, and enjoy a talk by one of the visiting researchers.

Day 12 Serengeti National Park/Ngorongoro

Depart from the Serengeti early and travel across the vast savanna to the Ngorongoro Conservation area. Spanning more than 20 kilometres in diameter, the Ngorongoro Crater is the largest non-flooded caldera in the world and is inhabited by some 25,000 animals. Set out on a full-day safari drive into the Ngorongoro Crater and observe the biodiversity and resident wild animals in this incredibly important location to the conservation and protection of global wildlife. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the heart of the world’s largest caldera surrounded by Ngorongoro’s flora and fauna. Then, travel to our accommodations in Pembeni for dinner and a relaxing overnight stay in a pristine wilderness setting.

Day 13 Ngorongoro/Arusha

Leave Ngorongoro behind this morning and travel from our lodge in Pembeni to a Maasai village. Here, we learn about the G Adventures–supported Clean Cookstoves Project, dedicated to providing clean-burning cookstoves to Maasai communities throughout Tanzania. Enjoy a presentation by a Maasai woman on the impact of the project, and take a guided tour of the village, visiting traditional homes or bomas and helping build a new stove. Continue to Arusha stopping en route for lunch. Spend the remainder of the day in the safari capital city of Tanzania, at your own leisure.

Imagínese, las infinitas manadas de ñus que fluyen desde el Serengeti de Tanzania, cruzando hacia el Masai Mara de Kenia. Sea testigo de las magníficas familias de elefantes en el Parque Amboseli marchando por la llanura, a la sombra del imponente monte Kilimanjaro. Llegada al aeropuerto internacional Jomo Kenyatta de Nairobi. El guía de Sensation of Africa en Kenia os dará una calurosa bienvenida en nombre de todo el equipo y os trasladará a vuestro hotel en Nairobi, asistidos para el check-in. Alojamiento y desayuno en DoubleTree by Hilton o similar.

Después del desayuno, nuestro guía estará en vuestro hotel listo para partir hacia el Parque Nacional del Lago Nakuru, donde llegaremos a media mañana y continuaremos el safari hasta el mediodía. El lago Nakuru se denominó “santuario de aves” en 1960 y más tarde en 1968 se declaró Parque Nacional. El parque tiene la población de rinocerontes más grande de Kenia. La superficie del lago Nakuru ocupa un tercio del parque. Es compatible con una densa floración de Cyanophyta spirulina platensis de color verde azulado, de la que deriva su color y es una fuente de alimento para los flamencos. Durante la temporada alta, miles de flamencos y pelícanos se congregan en el lago para alimentarse. Cena y alojamiento en Flamingo Hill Tented Camp o similar.

Este día completo es para disfrutarlo con safaris de mañana y tarde en el Parque Nacional de Masai Mara, una de las mejores reservas de vida salvaje de África mundialmente conocida. A pesar de que comprende solo el 0,01% de la superficie terrestre de África, en total más del 25% de los mamíferos más grandes del continente se pueden encontrar aquí. Hoy, después del desayuno, saldremos de safari por la mañana con nuestro almuerzo de picnic haciendo ruta hacia Isibania, la frontera de Kenia y Tanzania. Allí nos encontraremos con nuestro guía de safari de Sensation of Africa en Tanzania. Nos dirigiremos al alojamiento en el Serengeti donde podremos pasar la tarde nadando en la piscina mientras disfrutamos de la naturaleza observando algunos animales salvajes como elefantes y otros en la distancia. Cena y alojamiento en Simba Lodge Serengeti o similar.

Después del desayuno, llegaremos a la puerta de Ikoma para comenzar nuestro safari hacia el centro del Serengeti, donde disfrutaremos de un almuerzo tipo picnic y continuaremos con el safari hacia nuestro alojamiento. Este es el Parque Nacional más importante del continente africano con más de 14700 km² y probablemente el más famoso a nivel mundial. El parque alberga la segunda mayor migración de mamíferos terrestres del mundo y no solo es una de las Siete Maravillas Naturales de África, sino también una de las Diez Maravillas Naturales del mundo. Disfrutaremos de los safaris de mañana y tarde en el corazón de África salvaje, el Parque Nacional del Serengeti, donde podremos observar diferentes kopjes y una llanura interminable donde veremos: guepardos cazando con una aceleración de más de 100 km/h, leones en manadas o en acción, leopardos en los árboles, grandes mamíferos como elefantes y jirafas, cebras y ñus, muchos antílopes y cientos de especies de aves diferentes. Cena y alojamiento en Wildlife Lodge.

Temprano por la mañana partiremos hacia las tierras altas de Ngorongoro y descendemos 610metros hasta el suelo del famoso Cráter del Ngorongoro, donde las laderas volcánicas albergan a más de 25000 animales. Observaremos esta área mágica desde el bosque hasta la llanura, desde pequeños lagos salados hasta otros de agua dulce, aunque es raro verlo, el Cráter del Ngorongoro es el mejor lugar para ver el rinoceronte negro. Almorzaremos en el área de picnic mientras observaremos pájaros coloridos como los magníficos estorninos o las grullas de corona gris. Luego ascenderemos al atardecer hacia nuestro alojamiento en Karatu. Cena y alojamiento en Wildlife Lodge Manyara.

Después del desayuno, nos dirigiremos al lago Eyasi para realizar actividades culturales, donde visitaremos las tribus Hadzabe y Datoga, que son comunidades tradicionales que se encuentran en Tanzania con una forma de vida muy especial. Los indígenas Hadza, conocidos como Hadzabe son cazadores recolectores nómadas que usan arco y flechas, es mucho más que visitar una tribu… !es toda una experiencia africana! Aprenderemos sobre su estilo de vida y mucho más. Por la tarde disfrutaremos viendo a los flamencos y otras aves acuáticas mientras el sol se pone en el lago Eyasi. Esta mañana nos dirigiremos a Arusha con nuestro almuerzo tipo picnic y con tiempo suficiente para pasear viendo tiendas de regalos y recuerdos antes de llegar a vuestro alojamiento (alojamiento y desayuno incluidos).

Traslado al aeropuerto para tomar el vuelo a vuestro próximo destino o extender las vacaciones relajándose en las playas del archipiélago de Zanzíbar.

Maravillas de kenia y tanzania.

El viaje empieza en Kenia, el país de los safaris. La primera toma de contacto con el país será su capital, Nairobi. Desde ahí partiremos a la reserva de Samburu, donde haremos nuestro primer safari. ¡Y qué primer safari! En ese parque natural se encuentran algunas de las especies más raras, como la zebra real o la gacela jirafa. De ahí saldremos hacia los montes Aberdare, uno de los macizos montañosos más espectaculares. Dormirás en hoteles integrados completamente en la naturaleza, desde donde podrás observar cómo la fauna salvaje se acerca a las charcas a saciar la sed. Te fascinará el océano rosa de flamencos en el lago Nakuru o los cinco hábitats del Parque Masaai Mara. Allí, por cierto, se encuentran los Big Five (“los 5 grandes”), que son ni más ni menos que los cinco grandes mamíferos de la sabana: el león, el leopardo, el elefante, el búfalo africano y el rinoceronte negro. Y por supuesto, el parque Amboseli, a los pies del Kilimanjaro, el pico más alto del continente africano, que preside la sabana con sus nieves perpetuas.

La aventura continuará en Tanzania, el país situado al sur de Kenia. El cráter del Ngorongoro es un espectáculo en sí mismo. Un cráter gigantesco donde algunos de los animales más difíciles de observar del mundo han hecho su hábitat. Solo esa visita ya justificaría el viaje. Muchas de las escenas paisajísticas de Memorias de África se grabaron ahí. Pero no solo de Ngorongoro vive Tanzania. Visitaremos también otra de sus más preciadas joyas: el parque Tarangire, donde se encuentra la colonia de 3.000 elefantes, la más numerosa del mundo. Recorriendo la orilla del río que divide esta preciosa reserva, observarás en su elemento a leones, jirafas, cebras y otras especies que hasta ahora solo veías en la televisión. ¡Déjate cautivar por África!

Probablemente no hayas tenido nunca una granja en África, pero con la visita al Museo Karen Blixen podrás acercarte a la experiencia de lo que pudo ser eso a principios del siglo XX. La baronesa Blixen, fallecida en 1962, fue la autora de la novela “Out of Africa”, traducida al español como “Memorias de África”, en la que se basó la película del mismo nombre. El centro neurálgico del museo es la casa original en la que vivió la autora, antes de dejar el país tras una serie de tragedias personales. Situada efectivamente a los pies de las mismísimas colinas de Ngong, deambular por sus maravillosos jardines y entre el mobiliario original de la baronesa es un auténtico placer, y no solo para los enamorados de la novela. Eso sí, ten en cuenta que la película se filmó en una casa cercana, no en la original, así que no te sorprendas si las cosas son algo distintas a lo que viste en la pantalla. No muy lejos del lugar está la tumba de Denys Finch-Hatton, el amante de la baronesa fallecido trágicamente en un accidente de avión.

El cazador Denys Finch-Hatton era británico, pero en la película Memorias de África lo hicieron americano porque Robert Redford no acababa de lograr el acento británico perfecto. Y antes de ofrecer el papel de la Baronesa Blixen a Meryl Streep, los productores tantearon a Audrey Hepburn, que entonces tenía 56 años.

El tren que aparece en la película se construyó específicamente para la filmación, al no quedar ya trenes de ese tipo en Kenia en 1985. El tren se puede visitar en el Museo del Ferrocarril de Nairobi.

A menos de una hora de Nairobi, en Limuru, está la plantación de té Kiambethu, testimonio vivo de un pasado que ya dejó de ser. Adquirida en 1910 por la familia McDonnell y situada a 2.200 metros de altura, en esta granja se cultivó por primera vez té en Kenia de forma comercial. Hoy en día, tras cinco generaciones, los McDonnell siguen gestionándola y el té es una de las principales exportaciones del país. Una visita guiada por esta granja te sumergirá en un mundo de ensueño. Empieza todo, como no podía ser de otra forma, con una degustación de té, mientras te explicarán todo el proceso y ritual de elaboración del té. Después, empezarás un paseo por el bosque indígena adyacente y por la plantación, donde un guía local te explicará todos los secretos y curiosidades. No te extrañe si alguno de los numerosos monos Colobus que campan a sus anchas por ahí te observa con curiosidad. ¡No les molestes, están en su casa! Y a continuación, disfruta de un aperitivo con vistas a las colinas de Ngong, justo antes de una deliciosa comida preparada con ingredientes de la zona.

No te puedes perder el cráter del Menengai. Situado en las afueras de Karuru, desde ahí se puede contemplar una de las vistas más impresionantes de Kenia. Además, cuenta con multitud de leyendas y creencias locales, a cada cual más sorprendente. Para empezar, ya te avisamos que el paisaje te dejará sin palabras. Estamos hablando del segundo mayor cráter del planeta, a 2.500 metros del nivel del mar y con unas vistas espectaculares al lago Nakuru. Repleto de bosque, verde y exuberante, cuenta con una de las floras y faunas más exóticas del mundo. El mono Vervet, la misteriosa águila cafre, el miniantílope conocido como dicdic de Kirk… Pero el cráter de Menengai es eso y mucho más. La mitología que rodea al lugar lo ha convertido en punto de peregrinación: almas guerreras del pasado que se aparecen en busca del paraíso, el diablo montado en una motocicleta, seres espirituales que cuidan la tierra o un paraguas volador que se alza desde el suelo del cráter cuando llueve. ¿Te lo vas a perder?

La popularidad del Menengai ha facilitado que se trate de una zona cómoda para visitar. Cuenta con muchos recorridos trazados para hacer a pie o en bici, zonas de avistamiento de pájaros, áreas de picnic para descansar, etc.

Que Nairobi es una ciudad rebosante de vida, de ruidos, de olores, de tráfico… suponemos que ya lo sabes. Lo que igual te sorprende es que a apenas quince minutos del barrio financiero te espera uno de los secretos mejores guardados por los locales: el bosque Karura. Un pequeño oasis en el que dejarás de oír el ruido de los coches para adentrarte en un mar verde de paz y tranquilidad. Atravesado por tres ríos y con una cascada de 15 metros de altura, el bosque Karura cuenta con una selva de bambú, un humedal y un enrevesado sistema de cuevas, en el que los guerreros Mau Mau se escondían de los colonos británicos. Alquíla una bicicleta en el mismo parque, o recórrelo andando. Busca una sombra, saca el picnic y mientras lo degustas disfruta de la fauna y flora del lugar. Árboles nativos centenarios, cientos de especies de aves, murciélagos, antílopes, etc.

Tras la independencia de Kenia en los años sesenta, en plena ola de corrupción y burbuja inmobiliaria, el futuro del bosque Karura estuvo en serio peligro. Sin embargo, la activista política y ecologista Wangari Muta Maathai, Nobel de la Paz en el año 2004, luchó activamente para mantener la continuación del parque y ganó. Y hoy, el bosque Karura es uno de los lugares favoritos de los locales para olvidarse de la rutina y disfrutar del fin de semana.

Sí. Seguro que ya te lo imaginabas, pero Kenia es más que una fauna y una flora espectaculares. Su gente hospitalaria y alegre, sus colores, sus olores, sus sabores… Una especie de gran caos en el que cuando parece que no hay solución posible, esta siempre aparece, como por arte de magia. ¿Y qué mejor forma de sumergirte en ese océano de sensaciones que a través de sus principales mercados?. Te sugerimos una ruta con varias opciones. Elige uno, el que te coja más a mano, o visítalos todos ¡No te arrepentirás! Para empezar, tienes el mercado de Nairobi, en el distrito financiero de la ciudad. Es un edificio art-decó en el que podrás comprar desde bisutería a flores, pasando por carne y pescado. Ten en cuenta también que los principales centros comerciales organizan cada fin de semana mercadillos con artesanía típica masái. Los más famosos son los del Yaya, Prestige, Junction y Village Market. Allí podrás encontrar figuritas, pinturas, máscaras, lámparas… Pero si, por ejemplo, prefieres arte africano contemporáneo, tu lugar es el centro de arte Kuona Trust. Allí tienen su taller los artistas locales más en boga. Podrás adquirir sus obras hechas a base de vidrio, madera, chapa… ¡Una experiencia distinta y única!

En los mercados el regateo es absolutamente necesario. Cuenta con que el primer precio que piden los mercaderes por sus productos suele ser más del doble del precio local. El mercado de Nairobi se encuentra en Koinange St, City Centre; y Kuona Trust en Denis Pritt Rd.

Los nueve volcanes que forman parte del parque natural del Ngorongoro debieron convertir esta zona de África en una de las más convulsas del planeta. Este magnífico escenario natural combina bosques, lagos y salinas que se pueden apreciar visualmente desde todos los puntos de vista del cráter y desde lo alto de sus paredes, de más de 60 metros de altura.

Tras decenas de miles de años, el resultado de continuas erupciones ha conformado un paraje sencillamente espectacular. Visitarás un cráter de 20 kilómetros de diámetro que alberga a más de 25.000 animales. Antílopes, elefantes, leones, girafas, leopardos… En el Ngorongoro se encuentran algunas de las razas más extraordinarias y, lamentablemente, en peligro de extinción. Por ejemplo, el majestuoso e imponente rinoceronte negro. Y que no te extrañe si te encuentras con algún pastor de la tribu de los Masái pastoreando sus rebaños, un grupo étnico ataviado con túnicas rojas y con unos llamativos collares de marfil. ¡Esto es África! Sube hasta arriba y observa el horizonte. Disfruta de la sabana infinita. Y si encima coincide con un amanecer o un atardecer, con sus amarillos, naranjas y ocres pintados en el cielo, respira hondo y considérate uno de los seres más afortunados del planeta.

El cráter que vas a visitar, junto con la Garganta Oldupai, también allí, es uno de los sitios más bellos y con más renombre mundial de Tanzania. En esta famosa garganta se encuentran algunos de los yacimientos paleontológicos más importantes del mundo. De hecho, se la conoce como la “cuna de la humanidad”.

La zona está declarada como patrimonio cultural y natural debido a que en ella se han encontrado huellas y restos de Homo Habilis.

El parque natural del lago Manyara es una experiencia única e inolvidable. Es un solo parque natural, pero alberga en su interior once ecosistemas distintos que le otorgan una diversidad de flora y fauna sin parangón. Aquí encontrarás desde frondosas selvas a humedales, pasando por extensa y vasta sabana africana. Y todo en apenas 330 kilómetros cuadrados, incluidos los 200 kilómetros cuadrados que ocupa el lago que da nombre a todo el entorno. Bajo el talud occidental del Valle del Rift, aquí encontrarás babuinos, monos verdes, hipopótamos, cebras, ñus y aves de mil plumajes. Si vas entre diciembre y marzo, podrás observar un océano rosa: ¡las decenas de miles de flamencos que pasan el invierno en el lago! Pero uno de los platos fuertes del lugar son los leones. ¿A que no sabías que en algunos hábitats excepcionales, los leones trepan por los árboles? Efectivamente, el parque del Manyara es uno de ellos. Los expertos no se ponen de acuerdo. ¿lo hacen para combatir el calor? ¿la humedad? ¿los insectos? Pero aquí podrás contemplar una de las escenas más espectaculares de la naturaleza: los leones descansando plácidamente sobre las ramas de las acacias de copa plana. ¡Prepara tu cámara!

Aunque el parque es siempre un espectáculo, la mejor época para visitarlo es durante la estación seca, de junio a septiembre. Es entonces cuando se observan mayor cantidad de animales y, además, la cantidad de mosquitos es bastante menor. El tiempo de visita aproximado es de entorno a la hora y media.

Sí, claro que cuando uno va a Tanzania lo que espera es llenar el zurrón de experiencias e imágenes inolvidables. Leones, jirafas, rinocerontes, baobabs centenarios… Pero no puedes olvidarte de una de las mejores formas de conocer un país, su cultura y sus gentes: ¡la gastronomía! No esperes platos muy elaborados o rebuscados. La cocina tanzana se basa en un principio que seguro que compartes: materia prima de primera calidad. La carne de antílope, de ñu o de búfalo te sorprenderá por su sabor y textura. La forma más auténtica de tomarla es cocinada a la brasa, con un buen fuego de madera. Tampoco te pierdas sus kebabs, adaptados al estilo keniata y que están buenísimos. Habitualmente se hacen con carne de cordero especiada, acompañada de arroz y verduras. Y tampoco puedes dejar pasar la oportunidad de probar la legendaria tarta de pimienta: carne de ternera picada, cebolla, nuez moscada, cúrcuma y, como su propio nombre indica, tres tipos de pimienta. Otro de los platos típicos es el elugali, un puré de mandioca que se sirve con un guiso de carne y verduras. Pero tampoco te olvides del marisco. ¿Qué tal unos langostinos gigantes o una langosta de Zanzíbar? Acompáñalos de ensaladas de fruta fresca con papaya, coco, plátano, batata y manzana… ¡De 10! Y por supuesto, también hay vinos regionales que debes probar, como el Dodoma Pink y Red. Y si te van las emociones más fuertes, dale una oportunidad al elkibgayi -una mezcla de ginebra y vodka- o el licor de coco Afrikoko.

Ten en cuenta que la mayoría de bebidas se sirven del tiempo o ligeramente frescas, pero no frías. El agua debe ser siempre mineral y –importante- embotellada. Ante la duda de su procedencia, nunca añadas hielos de agua a tus bebidas.

La deliciosa gastronomía keniana ofrece multitud de platos ricos en sabor y tradición. La comida nacional por excelencia es el nyama choma, carne a la barbacoa, generalmente de ternera, salpimentada y acompañada de sabroso plátano frito o patatas. Para los más atrevidos también se elabora con carne de antílope, cocodrilo, cebra y ñu, que contrasta fuertemente con la comida tradicional española. La tilapia pescada en el lago Victoria es cocinada a la brasa obteniendo un plato jugoso y lleno de sabor con guarnición de ensalada o verduras. Alimentos sencillos como maíz, patatas y guisantes se unen para dar lugar al mukimo, comida típica de la tribu kikuyus. Elaborado con carne guisada sorprende con la mezcla de sabores. Todo un deleite para el paladar, la comida keniana, con influencia de las tribus y de elementos gastronómicos hindúes ofrece un fuerte contraste con la comida mediterránea a la que estamos acostumbrados.

La gastronomía tanzana se caracteriza por el consumo de pescado en la costa y carne en zonas del interior. Platos sencillos contrastan con la gran calidad de la materia prima con la que se realizan.

Las jugosas carnes a la brasa de búfalo, ñu y antílope son un reto gastronómico para el paladar español. Cordero, pollo, cerdo o ternera conforman una carta de carnes más conocidas para el viajero.Con gran influencia del islam, la cocina tanzana goza de sabrosos acompañamientos de arroz o verduras condimentados con exóticas especias. Las salsas elaboradas a base de curry y leche de coco cierran una carta diferenciada por las explosiones de sabor que hacen disfrutar a las papilas gustativas.

En Kenia existe una gran variedad de productos artesanales. Pasear por los mercados y encontrar cestas pintadas a mano, figuras talladas en madera, joyas de piedras semipreciosas y ropajes con múltiples colores resultará fácil a lo largo de todo el país. Se pueden comprar cuencos y bolsos de rafia, objetos producidos en hojas de banana como recuerdo del país, así como kangas, tela tradicional keniana para la mujer, para un vestido. En Kenia el regateo es muy típico por lo que si compramos más de un producto en un establecimiento podemos negociar el precio con el vendedor y llegar a un acuerdo.

La artesanía Masai constituye uno de los grandes reclamos para los viajeros en los mercados locales del país.

Escudos, lanzas y ornamentos realizados por las propias tribus son los recuerdos más demandados del país por los turistas. Tallas de manera, joyas, cestos de mimbre y cerámica conforman los puestos tradicionales de las calles. Las piedras preciosas o semipreciosas tales como zafiros, rubíes, malaquitas o tanzanitas se pueden adquirir en joyerías y así deslumbrar a todo aquel que las porta. Prendas de vestir, como el mítico kikoi repleto de fuertes colores que los hombres se visten, hacen de los mercados lugares únicos donde disfrutar de la cultura africana.

Los ciudadanos españoles necesitan un visado para viajar a Kenia . Los menores de 16 años están exentos de pagar el visado, bastará con presentar en el aeropuerto el pasaporte para su sellado. El visado necesario estará disponible vía online (e-Visa) o bien se emite en cualquier embajada o alta comisión de Kenia. También podrá expedirse en los puntos de entrada a Kenia. El visado de entrada única para turistas tiene una validez de 90 días. Para conseguirlo es necesario una fotografía tamaño pasaporte, una copia de la reserva del vuelo y el pasaporte con una validez de al menos 6 meses y dos páginas en blanco. Para cualquier duda se pueden poner en contacto con la embajada de Kenia en España.

Para entrar a Tanzania necesitas tener un pasaporte válido por al menos los siguientes 6 meses y un visado de turista. Si eres de un país europeo, excepto de Malta o Chipre, deberás sacarte un visado de turista.

La moneda oficial de Kenia es el chelín keniano (KES). Para realizar el cambio de divisa acuda a los principales bancos, oficinas de cambio u hoteles autorizados. Los aeropuertos internacionales poseen bancos abiertos las 24 horas del día.

La moneda oficial en Tanzania es el Chelín Tanzano (TSH). Debido a los niveles de pobreza en estos países, el turismo es un gran generador de riqueza para el país, pero atención, si vas a comprar en tiendas locales es normal que se requiera regatear para conseguir un precio que se aproxime al precio justo. Las propinas varían por servicios. En los restaurantes no es obligatoria la propina, pero sí está bien vista. Puede llegar a ser que en los restaurantes de lujo te incluyan la propina dentro de la cuenta. En los safaris y los treking guiados es común dar propina a los guías, portadores y equipo. En cuanto a los taxistas, no es común dar propina, a no ser que sea un taxi de largo recorrido.

En Kenia no existe límite establecido en la importación o exportación de la moneda local o extranjera. Para cantidades superiores a 500.000 KES o 4.000€ se requiere la autorización del Banco Central.

En Kenia no existen vacunas obligatorias para los españoles. Las recomendadas en este país son la fiebre amarilla, hepatitis A y B, tétanos-difteria, polio y enfermedad meningocócica. Se recomienda tomar medidas profilácticas contra la malaria. En el caso de estar en contacto directo con animales salvajes también se recomienda la vacunación contra la rabia. Recientemente se han dado casos de cólera en la capital, por lo que se recomienda tomar algunas precauciones, se recomienda solo beber agua embotellada y no ingerir hielo si se desconoce su procedencia. También se ha de evitar la fruta, verdura y alimentos crudos en los restaurantes y hoteles. En caso de comprar frutas y verduras, lavarlas bien antes de comer. Antes de realizar el viaje se recomienda contratar un seguro médico privado internacional con gran cobertura ya que en el caso de que sea necesario los traslados a los hospitales son muy difíciles y caros.

Tanto que tengas actualizadas todas las vacunas que te corresponden y tomes las medidas de precaución adecuadas, no deberías tener mayor problema viajando a Tanzania (por favor, consulta la página de asuntos exteriores para ver la lista de vacunas que corresponden). A pesar de que en Tanzania existen amplia variedad de enfermedades tropicales, las más comunes son la diarrea y catarros ocasionados por el cambio de clima y los hábitos alimenticios. La única excepción a la que tendrás que prestar especial atención es el caso de la Malaria debido a su riesgo potencial a lo largo y ancho de todo el país. Otro riesgo común al que tendrás que prestar atención es a los accidentes de tráfico, por lo que te recomendamos no viajar al anochecer y utilizar siempre autobuses o transporte privado para minimizar los riesgos. Recomendamos a todos los viajeros llevar un pequeño botiquín de primeros auxilios para evitar contratiempos en caso de necesitarlos.

La corriente eléctrica en Kenia es de 110/240 voltios a 50 Hz. Los enchufes son de tipo G por lo que necesitaremos un adaptador para la clavija.

En Tanzania el voltaje utilizado es 230V con una frecuencia de 50hz. Allí utilizan clavijas del tipo G y D, por lo que necesitarás un adaptador válido en Reino Unido, aunque, afortunadamente no necesitarás un conversor debido a un voltaje similar entre España y Tanzania.

La cobertura telefónica de Kenia es irregular en función de las zonas. En las reservas y parques naturales no hay cobertura, mientras que en los lodges y campamentos hay una señal mejor. Se recomienda verificar con su compañía telefónica la tarifa de roaming que tiene establecida. Otra opción es comprar una tarjeta prepago en el aeropuerto o en las ciudades para regular el gasto telefónico. El wifi también es irregular debido a las infraestructuras deficientes del país. Los hoteles de Nairobi y zonas de costa con un nivel medio-alto disponen de conexión en sus bares y zonas comunes.

En las grandes ciudades de Tanzania es muy común que encuentres WIFI para conectar con familiares y amigos, sin embargo, una vez adentrado dentro de un safari, la aventura comienza. Pon el teléfono en modo avión y disfruta de las mejores fotos que ofrecen los espectaculares atardeceres en Tanzania, ya que el acceso a internet es muy limitado, casi inexistente.

Las zonas de altitud baja, a lo largo de la costa, tienen un clima tropical, húmedo y caluroso. En la zona de meseta y tierras más altas, el clima es templado con fuertes lluvias. Las lluvias largas tienen lugar de abril a junio y las lluvias cortas en el mes de octubre. La temperatura media de Kenia es de 25,5 grados.

Tanzania es de clima tropical por lo que hay que tener en cuenta las épocas de lluvias a la hora de planificar tu viaje al África Oriental. Existen ligeras diferencias entre Tanzania septentrional y meridional, pero por lo general todo se considera clima Tropical. Salvando las diferencias entre interior y costa.

La temporada lluviosa o comúnmente llamada en swahili “masika”, lluvias largas, suele comenzar en marzo y acabar a principios de junio. Durante esta temporada los caminos suelen estar embarrados y es más difícil divisar fauna salvaje al aire libre por lo que hay mayor disponibilidad en alojamientos y safaris. Además, existe otra temporada lluviosa, llamada “vuli”, o lluvias cortas, que corresponde a los meses de octubre a diciembre. Esta época coincide con temporada media y puede ser un buen momento para ir a la zona Norte de Tanzania.

La temporada alta suele coincidir con la estación seca que dura desde junio a septiembre cuando el clima es un poco más templado y seco, en la que los hoteles están llenos y los precios son algo elevados. Además, debido al clima, es más sencillo avistar animales salvajes junto a los laguillos que se forman en la sabana. La otra temporada seca es de diciembre a febrero y es cuando el clima es más caluroso, soleado y seco. ¡El mejor momento para una aventura de safari que nunca se te olvidará!

En Kenia es delito fotografiar al presidente, instalaciones militares, televisión nacional, comisarías de policía así como a los agentes y en los aeropuertos. En caso de duda, evita tomar fotos a cualquier edificio gubernamental. En algunas tribus locales, como los Masais, también se ha de pedir permiso antes de sacar fotografías.

En cuanto a los seguros de viaje, te recomendamos mirar si tu seguro pagará directamente a los servicios médicos o si tendrás que pagar tú y luego te reembolsarán el dinero. Esta información es importante ya que deberás disponer de efectivo suficiente, ya que la mayoría de profesionales de la salud en Tanzania esperan que el pago se realice en efectivo en el momento de la intervención.

Asegúrate también de que tu seguro cubrirá cualquier transporte de emergencia que se necesite, tanto hasta la capital más cercana posible o, preferiblemente, un transporte de vuelta a tu país con tratamientos médicos incluidos.

Temporada de migración en el Serengueti (Kenia y Tanzania): La migración de ñus y cebras en el Serengueti es un espectáculo impresionante. Ocurre principalmente de junio a septiembre, cuando los animales se desplazan desde el Serengueti hacia el Masái Mara en Kenia. Es un momento ideal para presenciar la caza y los cruces de ríos llenos de cocodrilos.

Temporada seca (de diciembre a febrero y de junio a octubre): Durante la temporada seca, la vegetación es menos densa, lo que facilita la observación de la fauna. Los animales tienden a concentrarse alrededor de fuentes de agua, lo que facilita su avistamiento.

Las opciones que disponemos en cuanto al alojamiento son variadas desde el más aventurero que es el safari en camping , combinar camping con hoteles o lodges, o hacer el safari en lodges y dentro de este útimo grupo existen los lodges standard, los lodges medios y los lodges de lujo. Los lodges son hoteles enclavados en un medio natural, las construcciones suelen ser de cabañas no superando en ningún caso Las dos alturas y con unas decoraciones de acuerdo con el medio natural donde se encuentran. Otra categoría son los tented lodges que son similares a los lodges con la diferencia de que la habitación es una tienda de campaña de unos 25-30 m2. Kenya o Tanzania. ¿En qué lugar voy a ver más animales?

Si nuestro plan es realizar un safari  lo normal es preguntarse, ¿cómo es un safari? ¿Dónde voy a ver más animales? ¿Se pondrán los big five delante de mi cámara?

Para ver animales en Kenya querremos visitar los territorios de Samburu, Nakuru, Masai Mara y Amboseli. Para ver animales en Tanzania , los mejores lugares serán Tarangire, Lago Manyara, Serengeti y Ngorongoro, nuestras zonas predilectas.

Los animales no están limitados por fronteras, y en el caso de la migración entre Kenya y Tanzania, atraviesan libremente de un país a otro.

Cualquiera de estos destinos será satisfactorio, independientemente de la época del año , pero la clave principal es saber en qué lugar están las grandes manadas de herbívoros en el momento de nuestro viaje. Hablamos de la Gran Migración, que regula el paso cíclico de las manadas de un país a otro, de Kenya a Tanzania. Esta información añade valor al viaje, y aunque es imposible anticipar al 100% el momento en que cruzan el río Mara (un espectáculo mayúsculo), el éxito de la expedición estará asegurado.

Un espectáculo impresionante que resalta la movilidad y la libertad de la vida salvaje.

Hay otros parques, menos visitados y conocidos tanto en Kenya (Tsavo y Meru) como en Tanzania (Selous Mikumi y Ruaha) pero puesto que la presencia humana los ahuyenta, el avistamiento de animales es más dificultoso.

La Gran Migración, rebaños infinitos de ñus y cebras

El movimiento masivo de animales es un ciclo infinito que no se detiene. Las lluvias y los pastos que riegan marcan el ritmo de este gigantesco éxodo de vida animal. Es uno de los mayores espectáculos de la vida salvaje en el continente africano. Hay un movimiento constante de grandes herbívoros acompañados o recibidos en cada parque  por depredadores hambrientos.

La Gran Migración es una peregrinación circular sin inicio ni final. Los animales van viajando en el sentido de las agujas del reloj desde el área de conservación del Ngorongoro al Parque del Serengueti, desplazándose hacia el norte con destino al Parque de Masai Mara, en Kenya ; regresando a Tanzania por la parte oriental del Serengeti y completando el ciclo en las llanuras de Ndutu, al pie del Ngorongoro.

Así pues, acertar en elegir la zona oportuna en los meses adecuados va a permitir añadir un valor extra al viaje soñado y es lo que recomendamos asegurar consultando a los expertos en la materia. Toma nota también de las normas a seguir en un safari para sacar el máximo partido de la experiencia.

Hay más turismo en Kenia que en Tanzania, ¿o no?

En términos de turismo, Kenia históricamente ha atraído a más visitantes que Tanzania, gracias a destinos emblemáticos como el Masai Mara y la costa de Kenia. Conforme pasan los años parece que el número de visitantes se va igualando a ambos lados de la frontera. En Tanzania los parques del norte han visto como aumenta su afluencia, precisamente bajo la etiqueta de menos concurridos.

Tanzania ha ganado popularidad debido al Serengeti, al Monte Kilimanjaro, la montaña más alta de África, que atrae a muchos excursionistas y alpinistas cada año, y al Cráter de Ngorongoro, un lugar único que alberga una concentración excepcionalmente alta de vida silvestre.

Hay que saber que el Parque de Serengeti supera en 10 veces la extensión de la Reserva Masai Mara, por lo que matemáticamente la proporción de visitantes por kilómetro es sensiblemente inferior. Esta menor densidad de visitantes, y sus vehículos 4×4 o camiones adaptados, se pone de manifiesto y se nota en los game drives .

Alojamiento en la sabana africana

La afluencia superior de turismo conlleva también una mayor oferta de servicios en Kenia , con una mayor tradición y calidad. Esto no quiere decir que en Tanzania no encontraremos un buen hotel o un buen lodge, pero aquellos que busquen servicios de alto nivel deben saber que son más escasos en Tanzania.

Kenia dispone de una mayor variedad de alojamientos y mejores precios; incluso los lugares de acampada están acondicionados en mejores condiciones. Y para aquellos capaces de afrontar el precio de la exclusividad, en las concesiones privadas se encuentran algunos de los alojamientos más espectaculares de todo el continente. Un viaje a Kenia puede ser de corte exclusivo y elevadas atenciones.

Las playas del Océano Índico

Una vez más los dos países coinciden; ambos comparten hermosas playas bañadas por las aguas del Océano Índico. En Kenia destacamos la pequeña isla de Lamu y el litoral cercano a la ciudad de Mombasa.

Por contra en Tanzania tenemos una isla que es un destino turístico por si misma. Y es que las aguas turquesas de  Zanzíbar tienen fama a escala planetaria. En este apartado sobre la costa y las playas nos inclinamos abiertamente por Tanzania . Tanto es así que en muchas de nuestras propuestas, ya sea un safari o la ascensión al Kilimanjaro , recomendamos finalizar el viaje con una escala a Zanzíbar.

¿Es más barato Kenia o Tanzania?

Primero vamos a establecer algunos criterios para poder saber qué es lo que pagamos en un safari , dejando la duración del viaje como variable por definir. En primer lugar está el transporte. Es muy distinto el coste de un 4×4 o el precio de un camión que se puede repartir entre más viajeros. Otro componente a valorar es el tipo de alojamiento que contratemos, que se puede mover entre acampada, lodges, o luxury tented camps. Y para terminar, mencionar que una buena parte del presupuesto de un safari será la partida destinada a abonar las tasas de los parques y reservas que visitaremos.

Con todas estas consideraciones previas, y comparando viajes con un mismo nivel de servicios, según nuestra experiencia la opción de Kenia resulta sensiblemente más económica.

Pueblos Masai y Lago Natron. Más allá de un «clásico safari»

No todos los viajes a Tanzania o a Kenia tienen que estar exclusivamente centrados en un safari. Se entiende que un viaje a esta zona africana no finalizará sin al menos una jornada de safari en alguno de sus famosos parques, pero hay mucho más que ver y alternativas para el viajero inquieto. Un buen ejemplo es el Lago Natron y el volcán Ol Doinyo Lengai, lugar sagrado de los Masai. Es una excelente alternativa o complemento, pues acercarnos a esta zona permite adentrarse en los territorios de los Masai que no han tenido tanto contacto con el turismo. Muchas aldeas bordean los caminos y el ganado, fuente de riqueza principal, pasta en las laderas de la gran montaña sagrada de los Masai.

El Lago Natron, muy cerca de la frontera con Kenia , sorprende por el color de sus aguas salobres pobladas de algas rojizas. Miles de flamenco han adoptado el mismo color en su plumaje, dibujando una escena digna de los mejores documentales. La época de las lluvias marca el ciclo de todas las criaturas a kilómetros a la redonda con la subida del nivel de las aguas y la renovación de la vida.

Buenas tardes, Estamos pensando en hacer un safari el año próximo, con fecha de inicio aproximada el 4 de noviembre de 2024 y alrededor de 10-15 días. ¿Qué destino nos recomendáis y qué parques naturales? (nuestra idea es Kenya o Tanzania pero estamos abiertos a propuestas) Muchas gracias!

Safari en Kenia o Tanzania: 10 puntos para decidir

Decidir si hacer un  safari en Kenia o Tanzania  suele ser una de las primeras dudas que se tienen al plantearse realizar un viaje de estas características. Tanto Kenia como Tanzania son dos de los países más emblemáticos cuando se habla de la sabana africana y de los grandes mamíferos como leones o elefantes.  Dos opciones excelentes para disfrutar de la emoción de un safari .

Ambos países comparten el ecosistema Serengeti-Mara, el territorio de la gran migración. Sólo los animales, que no entienden de fronteras, pueden moverse libremente entre la Reserva Nacional del Masai Mara (Kenia) y el Parque Nacional del Serengeti (Tanzania). En coche está prohibido ir de un país a otro por dentro de este ecosistema, por lo que hay que conducir casi 15 horas para pasar de una reserva a la otra. Por eso, en muchos casos es mejor decidir entre hacer un safari en Kenia o Tanzania en lugar de querer visitar los dos países en un mismo viaje.

10 Aspectos para valorar si realizar un safari en Kenia o Tanzania

1. ¿se pueden ver más animales durante un safari en kenia o tanzania.

Haciendo un safari en Kenia o Tanzania la  observación de fauna está asegurada . En ambos países hay alguna de las reservas más excepcionales de África y se pueden tener avistamientos memorables.

En Kenia, la Reserva Nacional del Masai Mara tiene una  densidad de animales impresionante . Durante los safaris por la reserva se ven animales constantemente y es muy habitual ver leones. También en la reserva Ol Pejeta Conservancy es sorprendente la abundancia de animales.

Por otra parte, en Tanzania, el Cráter del Ngorongoro es el área donde existe una mayor densidad de animales, con unos 25.000 mamíferos en menos de 264 m². Los  safaris allí son extraordinarios . Sin embargo, en el Parque Nacional del Serengeti, dada su enorme extensión, la fauna está mucho más dispersa. Así pues, durante los safaris pueden pasar ratos en los que haya pocos avistamientos.

Si yo tuviera que elegir entre hacer un  safari en Kenia o Tanzania  valorando únicamente la cantidad de animales que se pueden ver, escogería Kenia.

2. Safari en Kenia o Tanzania: ¿Dónde es más económico?

Teniendo en cuenta que la experiencia de hacer un safari en Kenia o Tanzania es bastante similar, el  factor económico  acaba siendo determinante para elegir uno u otro país.

Para quienes viajan en solitario o en pareja y buscan el safari más económico posible,  Tanzania es mejor . Muchas agencias organizan safaris con grupos de seis personas, en los que se hace camping en el interior de los parques nacionales. Esto abarata bastante los costes. Además, dormir en una tienda de campaña en el interior de las reservas es una experiencia muy auténtica y emocionante.

Por otra parte, si se quiere realizar un safari privado y con alojamientos de clase media, entonces hay poca diferencia entre Kenia o Tanzania. Quizás en  Kenia haya más variedad de alojamientos , pero Tanzania durante los últimos años también ha evolucionado mucho en este aspecto.

3. ¿Se pueden visitar más reservas en Kenia o Tanzania?

Durante los recorridos más habituales por Kenia se acostumbra a visitar el Parque Nacional del Lago Nakuru, el Parque Nacional de Ambosseli, el Lago Naivasha y la Reserva Nacional del Masai Mara. También puede añadirse fácilmente al itinerario la Reserva Nacional de Samburu u Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

En Tanzania, lo más usual es hacer safaris por el norte del país. Allí se incluye el Parque Nacional Tarangire, el Parque Nacional del Lago Manyara, el Cráter del Ngorongoro y el Parque Nacional del Serengeti. Además, se pueden visitar otras zonas no tan enfocadas a la observación de fauna, como el Lago Natron o el Kilimanjaro (para realizar la ascensión se necesitan al menos unos 6 días).

Desde mi punto de vista,  en Kenia hay más diversidad de paisajes y ecosistemas en los circuitos habituales . Sin embargo,  en Tanzania se pueden realizar actividades más diversas durante los viajes . Además, también se pueden hacer safaris por el sur del país, una zona mucho menos turística donde hay reservas apasionantes como el Parque Nacional Nyerere, el Parque Nacional Ruaha y el Parque Nacional Mikumi. Además, en Tanzania también se pueden ver chimpancés salvajes en el Parque Nacional Mahale Mountains (sobre todo de junio a noviembre).

4. ¿Cuál de los dos países es más salvaje?

Kenia es un país con una infraestructura y promoción turística más desarrollada que en Tanzania. Esto hace que, sobre todo durante la temporada alta (especialmente de julio a septiembre) haya muchos más turistas y que, en algunos casos, pueda haber masificaciones  (sobre todo en el Masai Mara).

En cambio, cuando se hace un  safari en Tanzania, la sensación de encontrarse en una zona salvaje y prístina está mucho más presente. Sobre todo cuando se recorre el Parque Nacional del Serengeti, que tiene una extensión de casi 15.000 km² y que, para llegar hasta allí, es necesario atravesar primero el Área de Conservación del Ngorongoro.

5. ¿Dónde se pueden ver los animales de más cerca?

Cuando se piensa en hacer un  safari en Kenia o Tanzania , normalmente se sueña con ver a los animales pasando cerca del vehículo. Aunque la mayoría de los animales ignoran completamente los coches, poder verlos de cerca depende de la suerte. Está prohibido conducir por fuera de los caminos y, por tanto, sólo se ven a los animales de cerca cuando éstos se encuentran caminando o descansando en las pistas que recorren el parque.

Sin embargo, durante mi  viaje a Kenia por libre  pude comprobar que en Kenia normalmente se pueden ver a los animales de más cerca que a Tanzania. Sobre todo cuando se compara al Masai Mara y al Serengeti. Esto se debe a que la reserva del  Masai Mara es mucho más pequeña y hay muchos más caminos que la recorren, por lo que las probabilidades de que algún camino pase cerca de los animales son más altas.

6. ¿Es más seguro Kenia o Tanzania?

Hacer un safari en Kenia o Tanzania es una actividad bastante segura . Aunque estos dos países no gozan de las mejores condiciones de seguridad y es importante informarse antes de cualquier viaje, las reservas naturales suelen ser zonas muy seguras.

Actualmente, se considera que  viajar a Tanzania  es ligeramente más seguro que Kenia. Sin embargo, la diferencia es mínima y no debería ser un condicionante relevante a la hora de planificar un safari.

7. ¿Dónde se puede ver la gran migración?

La  gran migración de ñus  a lo largo del ecosistema Serengeti-Mara es un  ciclo infinito , en el que millones de ñus (y también cebras) se mueven en busca de pastos frescos para alimentarse. Los animales se mueven en el sentido de las agujas del reloj, pasando de la Reserva Nacional del Masai Mara (Kenia) al Parque Nacional Serengeti (Tanzania), y continuando hasta la zona del Lago Ndutu en el Área de Conservación del Ngorongoro ( Tanzania). Luego suben de nuevo por las llanuras del Parque Nacional Serengeti para llegar de nuevo al Masai Mara.

Si se quiere ver el espectáculo de la gran migración, la mejor zona dependerá de la época del año:

–  Enero : Los ñus comienzan a llegar al sur del Área de Conservación del Ngorongoro.

–  Febrero-Marzo : Los ñus se concentran en el área del Lago Ndutu, al sur del Área Conservación del Ngorongoro. Durante estos meses se produce el  calving , que es el nacimiento de medio millón de ñus.

–  Abril-Mayo : Los ñus comienzan a ir hacia el norte, y se pueden encontrar grandes concentraciones de estos animales en el centro y oeste del Parque Nacional Serengeti.

–  Junio-Julio : La mayoría de ñus se agrupan en el centro del Serengeti y comienzan a avanzar hacia el norte, en dirección al Masai Mara.

–  Agosto-Septiembre : A principios de agosto los ñus llegan al norte del Serengeti. Entonces empiezan a producirse los famosos y dramáticos cruces del río Mara y Talek. Por tanto, la gran migración llega al Masai Mara (Kenia) a lo largo del mes de Agosto. Durante septiembre es el mejor momento para ver la gran migración en Kenia.

–  Octubre-Noviembre : A principios de octubre la gran migración comienza de nuevo el camino hacia Tanzania. Durante estos meses, el norte del Parque Nacional Serengeti es la mejor zona en la que ver este espectáculo. A mediados de noviembre, los grandes grupos de ñus suelen encontrarse en el centro del Serengeti, en el área de Seronera.

–  Diciembre : A medida que avanza el mes de diciembre los ñus atraviesan el sur del Parque Nacional Serengeti para llegar hasta el Lago Ndutu.

8. ¿Son mejores los alojamientos en Kenia o Tanzania?

En Kenia hay una infraestructura de alojamientos algo más amplia que en Tanzania . Esto también está relacionado con la accesibilidad de los parques.

Por ejemplo, el Parque Nacional Serengeti es una zona  muy alejada de cualquier población , por lo que el número de lodges es más reducido y muchos de ellos son mucho más exclusivos. Reservarlos también puede ser más complicado, ya que solo aceptan reservas directas y pagos mediante transferencia.

En el caso de Kenia, las reservas más populares están cerca de pueblos. Esto hace que, aparte de poder dormir en el interior de las reservas, también se pueda pasar la noche en los pueblos, donde los alojamientos son más económicos.

9. ¿Dónde es más fácil ver los Big five ?

Si uno de los objetivos de hacer un  safari en Kenia o Tanzania  es ver a los  big five  (elefante, león, leopardo, búfalo y rinoceronte)  Kenia es ligeramente mejor . Sobre todo en lo que se refiere a la observación de rinocerontes.

Ver  elefantes  está prácticamente asegurando tanto en Kenia como en Tanzania. Es frecuente verlos en el Masai Mara, en el Parque Nacional Samburu, en el Parque Nacional Serengeti y en el Parque Nacional Terengeri.

Los  leones  son uno de los grandes protagonistas en la Reserva Nacional del Masai Mara y en el Parque Nacional Serengeti. Así pues, ambos países son una buena opción para poder admirar a estos fascinantes felinos.

Ver  leopardos siempre es más complicado, y el componente suerte juega un papel fundamental. Las probabilidades de verlos en Kenia o Tanzania son bastante similares. Masai Mara y Serengeti son dos de las mejores zonas donde buscarlos. Pero en Kenia, la Reserva Nacional de Samburu también tiene fama de ser una buena área donde buscar leopardos.

Los  búfalos  también son sencillos de ver tanto en las reservas kenianas como en las tanzanas.

En cuanto al  rinoceronte , en Kenia hay algunas de las mejores reservas del este de África donde ver a estos fascinantes animales. Especialmente  Ol Pejeta Conservancy  y el Parque Nacional del Lago Nakuru son excepcionales por la observación de rinocerontes. En Tanzania, lo habitual es ver a rinocerontes negros en el Cráter del Ngorongoro, pero no siempre se tiene la suerte de encontrarlos.

10. Safari en Kenia o Tanzania: ¿en qué destino es más fácil viajar por libre?

Aunque no sea el más frecuente, se puede  viajar por libre tanto a Kenia como a Tanzania . Si no se tiene demasiada experiencia, la opción que yo recomiendo es la de  alquilar un coche con conductor .

En el ámbito logístico es algo más sencillo organizar un  viaje a Kenia por libre . Por un lado, porque la mayoría de alojamientos aparecen en  Booking.com  y pueden reservarse fácilmente. Además, no es necesario adquirir ningún permiso previamente, y todo se puede pagar en la entrada de los parques nacionales.

En el caso de  viajar a Tanzania por libre , la reserva de algunos alojamientos puede ser algo más complicada, aunque tampoco es un gran problema. Otro inconveniente es que para poder hacer un safari por el Cráter del Ngorongoro es necesario pagar  295 dólares por vehículo (independientemente del número de viajeros). Además, el permiso de entrada en el área de conservación del Ngorongoro no se puede adquirir y pagar en la puerta de entrada al área de conservación, sino que debe realizarse previamente en Arusha. Es un proceso algo complejo y normalmente es mejor intentar gestionarlo a través de la agencia del coche de alquiler.

Agencias locales recomandadas para hacer un safari en Kenia o Tanzania

Decidas realizar un  viaje a Kenia o Tanzania  la experiencia será extraordinaria. Si no quieres ir por libre, una buena opción es  organizar el viaje con alguna agencia local . Es una alternativa más económica y más beneficiosa para la gente local.

A través del portal  Safaribookings.com se puede comparar las ofertas e itinerarios. Hay opciones que incluyen una ruta combinando Kenia y Tanzania, aunque yo creo que en los viajes de menos de 10 días es mejor visitar únicamente uno de los dos países .

En caso de viajar a Kenia, algunas de las agencias locales mejor valoradas:

–  Jocky Tours and Safaris . Una de las agencias mejor valoradas por viajes de presupuesto bajo o medio.

–  Axis Africa Expedition & Safaris . Una buena opción para organizar safaris privados de presupuesto medio.

–  Big Mac Africa Safaris . Es una buena alternativa si se quiere realizar un viaje por libre alquilando un coche con conductor. Es la opción que yo escogí.

Si vas a Tanzania, te recomiendo mirar las ofertas de estas agencias:

–  Meru Slopes Tours & Safaris . Ofrecen tours económicos en grupo y también safaris privados. Yo hice un safari de seis días en grupo y la experiencia fue muy buena.

–  Safari Soles . Una agencia local, especializada en safaris privados y personalizados.

–  Suricata Safaris . Esta agencia tanzana es una de las mejor valoradas. Ofrecen safaris en grupo y también rutas privadas por presupuestos de rango medio.

Safari en Kenia o Tanzania: ¿Cuál escogería yo?

Partiendo de la premisa de que tanto Kenia como Tanzania son dos destinos excepcionales, si yo tuviera que escoger uno de los dos destinos  posiblemente me decantaría por Kenia, pero evitando los meses de julio, agosto y septiembre .

En Kenia quedé enamorado de la  Reserva Nacional de Samburu , el ecosistema semiárido de esta zona es muy diferente a todo lo que había visto. También me pareció extraordinario hacer un  safari en el Masai Mara , sobre todo para ver felinos. Yo hice el viaje a Kenia por libre durante el mes de febrero.

En cambio,  si hiciera un safari durante julio, agosto o septiembre preferiría ir a Tanzania , aunque esto implicara no ver la gran migración. El Parque Nacional del Serengeti es mucho más extenso y no existe tanta acumulación de vehículos.

También,  durante el mes de febrero, Tanzania es un destino insuperable  si se puede visitar la zona del  Lago Ndutu . Durante el período del  calving  se ven muchísimos depredadores por esta zona y, consecuentemente, hay muchas escenas de acción. El inconveniente es que en el área del lago Ndutu no se puede realizar camping y todos los alojamientos son de rango medio o alto.
