Seattle Wine Tours Comparison

Kristin’s tips for your wine tour.

Here are some *hopefully* helpful tips from yours truly to keep in mind while planning your wine-tasting trip from Seattle.

  • ⏰ Book as soon as you can: While I’m also one to procrastinate, I recommend booking or at least reserving a ✨ refundabl e tour ✨ you’re interested. These tours fill up fast, and if your travel dates don’t work out or something comes up, you can cancel 24 before the tour and get a refund!
  • 📝 Write down your requests: If you have any dietary restrictions or want to tour a specific winery, make sure to write that down as you make your reservation! Most tour guides will do their best to accommodate you!
  • 🥾 Wear Closed-Toed Shoes: Between the fickle weather and the possibility of walking on uneven ground (guaranteed if you’re visiting Snoqualmie Falls), be sure to wear comfortable, close-toed shoes! No one wants to start the day with a fall!

A picture of one of the rooms that you'll walk through on the Underground tour through Seattle.

  • ☔️ Dress for rain or shine! As mentioned above, the weather can change on a dime, I recommend bringing sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen, a light rain jacket (at least), and maybe a good travel-sized umbrella !
  • 💸 Small Cash: I recommend bringing $10 – $20 USD to tip your tour guide(s). That said, if you don’t have small cash on you, you can likely Venmo, Zelle, or Cash App. That’s what I did when I had an amazingly charismatic guide for the Underground Tour of Seattle and had no small bills on me! 🙂

How to Do Your Own Seattle Wine Tour

It’s no secret that Seattle isn’t the cheapest or most budget-friendly destination to visit. And after looking at some of the tours, you may be thinking, “Holy crap, some of these tours are expensive! I can’t afford this!” Unfortunately, some of the wine-tasting experiences may indeed be out of your budget. But, that doesn’t mean that you can’t do an independent wine-tasting tour around Seattle! Below, I’ll detail two ways I would recommend going about this.

Wine Tasting With a Rental Car

The first option is to rent a car . Public transportation from the city to the wineries in Woodinville is limited, making a car the most convenient mode of transport. I recommend doing this with Discover Cars as that’s what I’ve had positive experiences with and they offer convenient pick-up options from Sea-Tac Airport. With your rental car, you can do a tour of the Woodinville wineries! Seriously, there are an abundance of wineries to choose from, so you’re sure to find someone that suits your palate!

A picture of the scenic roads at the foothills of the Cascades outside of Seattle. You can create your own wine tour from Seattle with a car.

And a lesser-known secret for saving money is to purchase a Passport to Woodinville Wine Country ! Essentially, it’s a virtual pass that grants you access to tailored tours and discounted tastings across the wine country. The passes are instantly delivered via text message or email. Once you purchase your pass, you just need to check the operating hours of the various tasting rooms for participating wineries (subject to change) and show up during those hours. Then, you show the staff your pass, and you’ll be good to go! This is a budget-friendly option and great if you’re traveling with a small group of 4-5 people since you can split gas and rental expenses ! Plus, it gives you the flexibility to linger at the wineries that catch your interest and explore at your own pace!

Wine Tasting Without a Rental Car

Now, let’s say you can’t get a rental car or simply don’t want to go through the rental process. Another option is to do a little wine tour within Seattle itself… This isn’t ideal since you won’t get to roam around the vineyards that exist outside the metropolitan area. But, there are a couple of cellars and tasting rooms available that are close enough to the downtown area, which is nothing to turn up your nose to. You can find these tasting rooms around SODO, which is about 10 minutes South of downtown Seattle.

A picture of downtown Seattle with lots of trees adorned with autumn-colored leaves.

Specific places I recommend checking out are Rotie Cellars and Latta Wines ! These are both pretty highly rated and you’ll find a wide array of wines offered there. Also, if you purchase a bottle from Rotie Cellars, they’ll give you a tasting for free, which is always welcomed :’). Another spot to check out in the area is Slight of Hand Cellars . It’s newer and has a fun ambiance that mixes wine and music. Just beware, the wine-tasting experience is on the pricier side, but I’ve heard that most people say it’s worth it!

Seattle Wineries Map

Below is a little map that you can interact and navigate around with. It includes most of the places mentioned throughout the post, so it’ll hopefully assist you in finding your footing in the city! The orange pins are two wineries that are crowd-favorites in Woodinville and worth stopping by. Meanwhile, the purple pines represent tasting rooms in SODO. Lastly, the red pin is Snoqualmie Falls, which several of the tours mentioned above include as a stop!

Seattle Wine Tours: FAQ

The Seattle wine tours above range from ~$115 USD for the large-group tours to ~$950 USD for the exclusive, private tours. Beware, prices often change depending on demand and the season.

Yes! There is a wine country near Seattle — it’s called Woodinville! This area is filled with 120+ different wineries and wine-tasting rooms. For those without a private car, you’ll need to rent a car , take an Uber, or join a tour to visit the Woodinville wineries.

The Woodinville wine region is about 20 miles (32km) or a 30-minute drive NE from Seattle.

While Seattle is not a wine-producing region itself, it’s close to Woodinville, which is known for producing exceptional red and white varietals. The most famous winery in the region is Chateau Ste. Michelle . They opened to the public in 1976 and were instrumental in putting Washington on the wine map! Today, they welcome over 200,000 visitors per year and you’ll notice that most of the tours stop by here!

The best wine tasting in the city is around Sodo, which is about 10 minutes South of downtown Seattle.

The best time of the year for wine tours is the Fall! Based on my multiple trips to Seattle, there are fewer crowds in autumn and the natural scenery looks spectacular! Of course, though, there are higher chances of rain!

Our tour driver, Cathy, was great! Punctual, knowledgeable, friendly and a safe driver. She was flexible and accommodating. Joe was helpful with the booking process. He helped us wineries that fit our needs. Pickup and drop off at our Airbnb. Cathy was helpful with our wine purchases. Would recommend this tour service. Worth every penny.

Whether you're a company owner/planner or a traveler looking for a great time, great pricing value, no planning required on your end, this is the company to use for a wine tour. I ended up taking out my executive management team that runs our mortgage company, and this trip was planned last minute as far as the wine portion was considered; not only were they able to get us fitted in as scheduled. They also had a perfect itinerary for the goal in mind. There were three stops, and each visit got a little bit better and better, and the finale did not disappoint. Each one treated us like VIPs, ensuring that we had the best experience and knew that we were coming ahead of us getting there. In addition, we were able to add on additional purchases that each stop if we opted to, such as a bottle to be shipped home or snacks desired for the wine. Joe was our main point of contact to get the tour scheduled, and Kal was our chauffeur. I do want to point out a few details about Kal! Chauffeurs will make or break your tour experience, and Kal absolutely knocked it out of the park! Incredibly accommodating, always paying attention, no rush, and ensured that we get the best out of the experience with the wineries and other Seattle WA trivia & history. Truly a professional! Thanks again, Seattle wine tours; I appreciate the absolute success!

If you like/love wine and you're in Seattle, you should make a reservation with Joe to do a wine tour. Joe will ask you some questions so he can plan your tour appropriately, if you have preferred wineries you want to visit just let him know and he'll work with you on the plan. We did a wine tour including a stop at Snoqualmie Falls. Joe scheduled us for four wineries but since we were a little tipsy after the third tasting room we decided to forego the last winery and our chauffeur Michael was more than gracious about granting our request. Michael was great - he was super sweet, accommodating, drove nicely, and told us about the history of places as we drove by. I also really appreciated that he always told us where he'd be and that he was just a phone call away if/when we needed him. His professionalism was comforting. I will be recommending Seattle Wine Tours to everyone I know going there (if they drink wine)! :O)

I give Seattle Wine Tours 5 out of 5 stars mainly because of the exemplary service we received from our tour guide and driver "Big" John. He was awesome. Seattle Wine Tours offers various wine tasting and wine tour packages across the state of Washington. Our group of 10 reserved a Friday afternoon tour in August 2015 and was hooked up with Big John. Staying within city limits, we booked the Seattle tour which included stops in SoDo, the South of Downtown neighborhood in Seattle's Industrial District, plus a stop at Kerry Park at Queen Anne Hill to take in breathtaking views of the city and bay. The tour lasted roughly 4 hours. John was pretty much our personal chauffeur for the afternoon. He was professional, personable, and knowledgeable. If I recall correctly, Seattle Wine Tours is associated with a Seattle limousine service (I think they're called Bayview Limousine) which John also works for. He's driven A-list celebrities and professional athletes around the Seattle metro for decades. We arranged for John to pick us up at our lunch restaurant in Ballard. He then helped take us on a couple impromptu errands we need to get done in the neighborhood (technically not part of the tour) before we hit the interstate and headed south to our first stop. Here are the places we hit: 1. Westland Distillery (American single malt whiskey) 2. Charles Smith Wines Jet City 2a. Cowgirls Espresso (Seattle location #1) 3. Georgetown Brewing Company 4. Kerry Park Ours was not strictly a wine tour. We tried whiskey, wine, coffee, and beer, and ended the afternoon at one of Seattle's most scenic spots. Overall, I think our group had a great time except for stop #2 at Charles Smith Wines Jet City. Several guys in the group complained about the poor service at Charles Smith Wines and they also thought the tastings were a rip-off. Perhaps Seattle Wine Tours should consider finding a better stop. Westland Distillery was the longest stop on our tour because it included a tour of the distillery followed by a whiskey tasting. The smell at Westland Distillery was so strong that one of the guys in our group had to sit out of that portion of the tour. Since our group was a bachelor party, John suggested a stop at Cowgirls Espresso. It's conveniently located next door to Charles Smith Wines Jet City. Our group is from the east coast and Cowgirls Espresso was our introduction to the bikini barista concept. This concept originated in Seattle and basically consists of drive-thru coffee shacks staffed by attractive, scantily-clad, bikini-wearing ladies. Everyone seemed to like Georgetown Brewing Company. This appeared to be a popular local spot for growlers and growler refills. The free beer tasting bar was a hit. Before taking us home, John unexpectedly took us to Kerry Park. I say "unexpectedly" because none of us had an itinerary for the day's activities so we didn't know what to expect. I suspect this may be a regular stop on the tour. We were stoked when the van pulled up to the park. John helped take group photos of us in front of the downtown Seattle skyline, Elliott Bay, the West Seattle Peninsula, and Mount Rainier. We rode in a brand new, comfy and spacious, 14-passenger Ford Transit van. It was great. John allowed us to play our own music by connecting one of our phones to the van's auxiliary audio. He also had ice cold bottles of water for us in a cooler if we needed them. In the end, I was very happy with John and Seattle Wine Tours. He showed our group a good time. He was flexible and I enjoyed listening to his entertaining and enlightening stories between stops.

We had such a great time with Jim on our wine tour. We booked our private van tour about a month in advance for a party of 8. Our guide/driver arrived at our hotel 10 minutes early and waited patiently at each stop for us while we wine tasted and toured. They made appointments for us at Novelty Hill/Januik and at JM cellars. They also arranged for a tour at Chateau St Michele and stopped Sumerian brewing company for food/beer. Finally, we visited Snoqualmie Falls and was brought back to downtown Seattle. Everything was perfectly timed and tailored to our group's needs. Would definitely recommend this experience to anyone visiting the Seattle area!

I highly recommend Seattle Wine Tours. They are exemplary at all they do, from setting up the tour to ensuring everything goes smoothly. Their prices are extremely fair. I worked with Joe to drill down logistics and it is clear that he knows the Seattle wine scene in and out - he had specific insights into which wineries matched what the group was looking for in both vintage and ambiance. Mary, our driver, was a consummate professional who is great at driving but also keeping to the itinerary (something that those who have wine tours below know is quite difficult). I cannot think of one negative about the experience.

I booked a birthday trip to Woodinville for 14 of us. Two of us were celebrating birthdays. It was a wonderful day and everyone in our group had an amazing time!! Kathryn was absolutely wonderful! She arrived a little early (which was appreciated) and we set off on our day. We visited three wineries that were totally ready and prepared for our party. She did an excellent job with not rushing us but still keeping us on schedule. It was easy moving from one place to the next and the day flew by! Some of the wineries are more spread out, so transportation was nice to have. I would absolutely do this again and several people in my group said the same. Booking was easy and every part of the process was seamless. I highly recommend this tour guide service!! My only complaint, which is more on the winery than the tour, is the tasting fee was higher since we were in a group at one of the wineries. We would have been fine not having the private area with a higher cost--if that was the reason.

What an amazing experience! We rented a 10 person limo for my Bachelorette wine tasting the weekend before my wedding. Joe the owner was so responsive and such a pleasure to work with. He answered all of my questions and helped me coordinate a day of fun. Michael our chauffeur was wonderful! Very helpful. Limo was new and clean. Cups were provided for us. We brought our own champagne and flutes to sip in between rides. I suggest you have them pick you up in the Woodinville area so you spend more time going to the winery's vs driving in the car. 11/10 experience and will book again!

Traveled to Seattle 10/3-10/6 and my husband hired this service to take us to some wineries on 10/4. Had a great time, Kathy was our driver and she was super knowledgeable about Seattle and the wine region around there. Had a great experience. Didn't get to all the wineries that we planned but we were enjoying one longer than expected, but that was ok. Never felt rushed. Joe the owner of Seattle Wine Tours seems like a great person and enjoys what he does. Would recommend their service

We booked Seattle Wine Tours for our girlfriends Bachelorette. Coming up from Canada, we did not know what to expect in the realm of wine tours within the city of Seattle. It was honestly our favourite day and we couldn't have had the experience that we did without our exceptional driver, BOB!! He was beyond professional, ensured we stayed on schedule, snapped all the necessary photos and was truly one of the best drivers and tour guides I have ever experienced. We may be hiring him again internationally for the next event! Thank you Bob! And thank you Seattle Wine Tours for giving your Canadian neighbours an experience to never forget!

Woodinville Wine Country

Getting Around Woodinville

With over 120 wineries and four distinct wine districts, Woodinville Wine Country presents a mind-boggling array of options. To help make your trip easier, we’ve compiled the best options for making your way from one taste to another.

ARRIVE BY CAR, PROCEED ON FOOT

Getting to Woodinville by car is an easy drive from almost anywhere in the Greater Seattle Area, with easy access from I-405, WA-522, and WA-520. Uber and Lyft services are available here, and larger venues and events offer designated pick-up and drop-off lots. Most of the wine districts are walkable, so plan your day around one district, park once, and spend the day strolling and sipping.

TWO-WHEELING IT

Biking is one the easiest, most enjoyable ways to get around wine country. The Hollywood and West Valley districts are easily accessible by bicycle from both the Burke-Gilman and Sammamish River trails. Parking the car at Bothell Landing (where there’s a convenient LimeBike station) it’s a flat, three-mile ride along the river to Woodinville. Coming from the Eastside, park at Marymoor Park in Redmond and pedal through the Sammamish Valley to the Hollywood District. Another option is to bring your bike aboard Metro Transit, get off at the Woodinville Park & Ride, and pedal from there.

Take your mind off the road and put it squarely on the reserve by leaving the driving and parking to one of our local wine tour professionals. Fewer vehicle worries and a seasoned guide to the best wine experiences can make all the difference between a good and a great day of tasting. Take a look at our tour providers that offer a variety of options – from private town car to shuttle bus or even a 15-person party bike – to create your ultimate tasting tour.
