Revisiting Shantiniketan – a complete 2 days itinerary

Weekend Getaways from Kolkata , West Bengal

Shantiniketan West Bengal

Last Updated on: Sep 11, 2022

What is so special about Shantiniketan? Is it the love for the Bard that lures people into the land of rangamati (red soil) and Palash ful (flame of the forest flower)? Or is it the serenity and simple beauty of the place that attracts travellers like us to go back there time and again? I had wanted to visit Bolpur – Shantiniketan since the time I started understanding Sahaj Path and could recite “ Pujarini ” and “ Karna-Kunti Sangbad ” at one go. For the uninitiated, Pujarini and Karna-Kunti Sangbad are two very famous Bengali poem pieces written by Rabindra Nath Tagore . But I could only visit Shantiniketan for the first time during one Basanta Utsav (Holi) two years back.

Shantiniketan Travel Guide

Visiting Shantiniketan during the Basanta Utsav is no doubt a great experience. But that was a rushed visit. Our heart longed for another trip to Shantiniketan. And this time we decided to explore the place during the monsoon. We heard Shantiniketan is absolutely mesmerizing when it rains. Well, rains do have that nature to make a place look gorgeous. Only when you have to go for work while it is raining, it does become a bit of a headache!

Khoai Shantiniketan Sonajhuri Haat Bolpur (2)

If you arrive at Shantiniketan on a Saturday, then the only thing you should do that day is to go and explore the Khoai Shanibarer Haat (the local Saturday market) at Sonajhuri. As it is the forest of Saal ( Shorea robusta ) looks and feels incredibly romantic, the colourful market is set amidst the forest making it even more attractive. Occasionally, we could hear the soulful Baul songs or see the tribals dancing to the beating of drums. There is nothing to not like here.

Shantiniketan Travel Guide Khoai

And then there were the numerous makeshift shops. The locals from the surrounding villages as well as Ahmadpur, Sainthia and other places bring their merchandise to sell. Sarees, Kurtas, dresses, skirts, jewelleries and other trinkets – there were so many things on display; and so were local handicrafts and handlooms. Roaming around the local market and admiring everything on display took most of our time. We returned to our hotels after dusk.

Day 2 and this day we decided to explore Shantiniketan a bit better. Our first stop for the day was the Kopai River . And it was then when the rains came pouring. Well, as I said before, rains have the power to make a place looks breathtaking. And the place too became extraordinary! Next, our Toto driver took us to the Baha’s village. A Bengali daily soap was being shot at this location and now it has become a tourist spot. We were not quite interested in visiting it, but our Toto driver anyhow took us there. Imagine the reach of television!

Next, we went to see the Buddha Vihar . This is something which I did not expect at all. A giant white Buddha statue stood in a small surrounded area. The place is not much old. And then we visited Amar Kutir , a co-operative society for the rural development of the surrounding areas.

Amar Kutir is a fascinating place. We saw how they make those famous Shantiniketan handbags. So much labour and precision go into making such designer leather crafts. We visited the Batik factory to see the process of colouring and printing batik. It was great to see how a white cloth was finally transformed into a colourful dress material. There is a shop and showroom at Amar Kutir complex where you can buy souvenirs.

Amar Kutir Shantiniketan Travel Guide

Our next stop was Srijani Shilpa Gram Complex . It is a huge complex beautifully decorated with replicas of houses of the eastern and northeastern states of India. This complex is developed and maintained by EZCC (Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre) and various cultural programmes and concerts are held here. You can spend some time here at the Srijani Complex. There is no dearth of greenery here.

Shantiniketan Travel Guide

This concluded our trip of Bolpur – Shantiniketan. We had visited the Vishwa Bharati University before and so did not go there again. We still had time and so we went to Surul, a small village. The main attraction of Surul is the SarkarBari also known as the Surul Rajbari. The history of Surul Sarkar family can be traced back to 300 years. The Sarkar Rajbari was built by Srinivas Sarkar in 1750. The Sarkar Bari is known for their 250 years old Durga Puja celebrations. Beside the Sarkar mansion, there is a temple complex. The temple has some fine terracotta works, though they are all dilapidated now.

It was afternoon and also the time for our return journey. We were back at Bolpur Railway station ready to return to our homes and get back to our daily routine. It was a short trip to the heart of Bengal, but it did give our hearts immense pleasure.

Some tips for a perfect weekend at Shantiniketan

If you are coming from Kolkata (which is most probable) either reach on Friday night or Saturday morning. We are giving a tentative itinerary that might help you.

Day 1: If you are visiting Shantiniketan for the first time, visit Viswa Bharati University in the morning. Have a tryst with Tagore and his abode. Visit the Uttarayan Complex, Rabindra Bhavan Museum, Upasana Griha, Chhatimtala. You can also walk around the various departments of Viswa Bharati University.

Assuming it is Saturday, in the afternoon visit the Khoai Saturday local market. Otherwise, you can just visit the Sonajhuri forest.

Day 2: Start with a visit to the Kopai River followed by Kankalitala Temple, one of the 51 Shakti-Peeths of Hindus. If you visit the Kankalitala temple, then do stop at Adityapur village. Then visit Amar Kuthi and finally Srijani Shilpa Gram Complex. If you are interested in the heritage of Bengal, then do give a visit to Surul as well. You will finish the entire tour by afternoon, so you can return by any evening train from Bolpur-Shantiniketan.

How to reach Shantiniketan

Shantiniketan is nearly 200 km from Kolkata. The nearest railway head is Bolpur-Shantiniketan. You will get many trains from Howrah to Bolpur. You can also come by road from Kolkata.

Where to stay at Shantiniketan

Shantiniketan has many hotels, resorts and homestays. You can stay near the main town. But we would recommend you to stay near Prantik or Sonajhuri. The place is close to nature and is blissful.

Shantiniketan is a popular weekend destination from Kolkata. It is better to book your accommodation from before. Please be aware that during the season time like Basanta Utsav and Poush Mela, Shantiniketan gets very crowded and it finding a proper accommodation becomes difficult. Hotels get booked from quite early and prices are also quite high during these time.

Some other tips

If you have not brought your own car, then you can roam around all the places in and around Shantiniketan in a Toto (e-rickshaw).

Hire a guide for seeing around Viswa Bharati.

Try to stay near Sonajhuri or Prantik.

Eat at Ram-Shyam Hotel at Sonajhuri. It has delectable Bengali cuisines on offer.

Pick up some souvenirs from Khoai Haat.

Here are some other pictures to fuel your wanderlust!

Best Shantiniketan Tour Guide in Budget

Chatimtala, Shantiniketan Tour Guide

Bolpur also referred to as Shantiniketan is one of the most popular weekend trip destinations in West Bengal. In Bengali, Shantiniketan means house of peace and the majority of Bolpur is so calm that you will enjoy every bit of nature. Be it cultural programs, haat, Arts, or majestic Visva Bharati University, Shantiniketan always feels homely.

In this detailed Shantiniketan tour guide, we will discuss key aspects like accommodation in Shantiniketan, places to visit, how to reach Bolpur, etc.

How to Reach Shantiniketan

Bolpur is easily accessible by train and road from Kolkata. A faster and hassle-free option will be to board a train from either Howrah or Sealdah. However, you can also enjoy a long drive or take a bus to reach Bolpur (200 Kilometers) within four hours. Enroute you may taste famous Shaktigarh’s Langcha.

Hotels in Shantiniketan

Likewise any other popular tourist destination, Bolpur has a wide variety of accommodation options available in every price range based on location, coziness, and amenities. A typical roadside lodge can charge you Rs. 300 for a single bedroom while a moderate hotel/lodge with better amenities and location can charge Rs. 800. It all depends on what you need. Generally, a clean standard double bedroom will cost anywhere between Rs. 800 (Non/AC) to Rs. 1500 (AC). You can choose between Resorts, Luxurious hotels, Budget hotels, Holiday Homes and Homestays.

  • Budget hotels at Bolpur – Nirala Lodge, Ashirbad Lodge, VIP Guest House, etc.
  • Luxurious accommodation in Bolpur – Hotel Royal Bengal, Shantiniketan Tourist Lodge
  • Homestays in Shantiniketan – Monpakhi, Chaiti, Krishna Chura, etc.

Notes: Bolpur celebrates “Poush Mela” (Last 10 days of December) and “Basanta Utsav” (Holi) every year on a very large scale. Thousands of people gather at that time, so all the services like accommodation, transportation, and food generally become very very expensive.

Food Options in Bolpur

Bolpur is certainly not famous for food. But if you love authentic Bengali cuisine there are a few places (little overpriced) you can visit like Ghore Baire, Panchabanjan, Sonajhuri, etc. Also, you will get the other cuisines like Mughal, Chinese very easily in restaurants like 9X9, Green Chilies, etc. Even typical budget Bengali meals are also available in roadside stalls or food hotels. I will be sharing my experience about the 9X9 and Ghore Baire restaurant shortly in a different post.

Local Sightseeing in Shantiniketan Tour

Bolpur is mainly known for its natural beauty, Shri Rabindranath Tagore and Rangamati (Reddish Soil). During this Shantiniketan tour, you will enjoy the cool breeze, lots of greeneries more than the local sightseeing points.

Visva Bharati University

Unlike any other university, this institution only focuses on Arts, Literature, and Culture since its early days. On 22nd December 1901, this University was started with only 5 students in one of the grounds underneath trees. Gradually it became one of the most prestigious universities in India and get recognized internationally too. Still, students take their class in the open sky, under trees. Most of the visiting spots open at around 1 PM every day except Wednesday and Thursday.

Rabindra Bhawan Museum

Shri Rabindranath Tagore used to live in one of the buildings namely Rabindra Bhawan. Currently converted into a well-equipped gallery cum museum even his used car is on display. Shri Rabindranath Tagore’s writings including noble winning “Gitanjali” & its multilingual editions, arts, used materials, family details, and achievements are showcased here.

Rabindra Bhawan Museum, Viswa Bharati University, Shantiniketan

Rabindra Bhawan Museum Timings and Entry Fee

There is an entry ticket of Rs. 50 for general, Rs. 300 for foreigners and Rs. 10 for Students to enter the museum. This museum remains open from 10 AM to 6 PM (Wednesday and Thursday closed). Facilities like cloakroom, car parking, toilet, drinking water are available. Also, remember to keep this ticket until you enter Shantiniketan Griha.

Note: You are permitted to click pictures inside the museum but not selfies or any person. Using flash is strictly prohibited. In addition, please maintain silence inside.

Few more interesting places to see like Shantiniketan Griha, Chatimtala, Aurobinda Griha, Upasana Griha, and many more small but significant places. You should get yourself a guide for Rs. 100 – 200 to know the hidden facts and history about this place.

Pro Tips – Please clearly discuss all the places guide will take you and also bargain beforehand.

Shantiniketan Griha, Viswa Bharati University, Shantiniketan

Kopai River ViewPoint

Although this place is getting narrower day by day, still it holds at least a satisfying beauty during sunset and cloudy days.

Kopai River View Point, Shantiniketan

Shanibarer Haat or Khoai Haat

This haat is one of the most attractive points of the Shantiniketan tour for fashion & handicraft lovers at Bolpur, Shantiniketan. You can get traditional Khes & Kantha Stitch sarees and Kurtis. Also, the marvelous handwork items like jewelry, poem frames, bags, etc. are available at the cheapest rates. You can do a little bargain too. If possible try to purchase stuff from this haat or Biswa Bangla Haat at Prantik to help the sellers rather than stores in Bolpur market area. This weekly (only Saturday) haat starts at around 3 PM till sunset.

Kankalitala Mandir

It is one of the 51 Shakti Peeth. As per mythology, the bone of goddess Sati dropped here. This temple is considered as a Hindu religious place. Every Tuesday, Saturday, and Sunday many people gather for Puja.

Kankalitala Mandir, Shantiniketan

You can also visit Deer Park (Ballabhpur Wildlife Sanctuary), Srijani Shilpagram, Prantik Biswa Bangla Haat, Bakreswar and Mama Bhagne Pahar.

Transportation in Bolpur

Bolpur has almost every kind of transportation like e-rickshaw (Toto), auto, rented car, and bus. I personally prefer e-rickshaw because of less fare and its eco-friendly operations. Nature alongside the road is worth watching from a relatively slow-moving vehicle. Although if you are in a rush and looking for a faster alternative, a rented car will be the perfect fit.

Suggested itineraries for Shantiniketan Tour

  • 1st Day: Reach Bolpur by 9 to 10 AM. Rest for an hour then leave for Mama Bhagne Pahar and Bakreswar.
  • 2nd Day: Local Sightseeing includes Srijani Shilpagram, Kankalitala, Kopai viewpoint, Prantik, Vishwa Bharati University, Deer Park and Shanibarer Haat.
  • 3rd Day: Return Back.

Alternatively, if you have less time, you can return back on Day 2. Otherwise, extend your Shantiniketan tour to one day more. So, you can visit Massanjore, Tarapith, and Nalhatiswari Temple.

Basanta Utsav, meaning the ‘celebration of spring,’ marks the vibrant season of Dol Utsav in the Bengali calendar, specifically during Falgun and Chaitra. Nature adorns itself with the colorful blossoms of Palash, Shimul, and other flowers during this time. The tradition of celebrating the spring festival in Bengal was inaugurated by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore at Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan. While similar to Holi, Basanta Utsav distinguishes itself with its graceful festivities. The fervent celebration takes place on Dol Purnima, the Full Moon day of Falgun. The day begins with a lively procession featuring long musical dances, followed by performances of Tagore’s music, rhymes, and dances by students from various departments. Dressed in yellow (basanti), symbolizing the vibrancy of spring, boys and girls elegantly welcome the season of hope. As the day progresses, both students and teachers participate in applying colored powders, known as abeer (abhor), on each other. This colorful tradition transforms the university premises into a lively canvas of hues. Visitors are warmly welcomed and encouraged to partake in the festive spirit. The air is not only filled with a myriad of vivacious colors but also with the essence of joy and hope, creating a delightful atmosphere. In the evening, students from Sangit Bhavana at Visva-Bharati present selected dance dramas by Tagore, adding an artistic touch to the festivities..

Poush Mela: The festival of music and craft, Posh Mela is organised between December and January. It is celebrated on the Foundation Day of the University.

Best Time to Visit Shantiniketan

The ethnicity of this place can be best in its attribute during mid-august-march. It is better to avoid this place in peak summers, because of the scorching sun.

This place is the ideal spot for different festivals starting from Poush Mela in winters. Dol Utsav in the spring.

These two time periods are apt to visit there. People are willing to see the crowd in a festive mood. They can enjoy the local fair, where artisans display the handicraft items.

Surely you won’t be tired of shopping after heavy bargaining. Most importantly visitors of these periods are advised to pre-book the hotels 1-2 months earlier to avoid unnecessary rush. Winters is no doubt one of the best time to visit this place for a trip.

It is also suggested to avoid the rainy season and summer. Because of the muddy slippery roads and the roughness of hot sun. If you want to feel nature from indoors. Then there is no reason to stop yourself to be the witness of the magical transformation of the greenery.

Concluding Thoughts

As you can see the place has lots to offer to the tourists that are looking to explore new places as well as to tourists who want to spend a few days in quiet and unwind. The unique bond between nature and culture is what woos tourists for decades now.

If you are reading this blog and are yet to visit the places, we believe you must have this as your next tour plan. Only when you go, you will know how well the name ‘Shantiniketan’ resonates with the meaning of the name. That is the abode of peace.

Santiniketan: all you need to know to go

By Anubhuti Krishna

Shantiniketan

Santiniketan is known world over for its contribution to education, arts, and literature, but Rabindranath Tagore's town in Bholpur, West Bengal is much more than that. While the Visva-Bharati University that is located in the town brings in the young crowds, Santiniketan's origins date back to 1883. It was then that Rabrindranath's father, Debendranath Tagore built a home/gurukul for spiritual and meditative purposes. He found the area exceptionally peaceful and called his home Santiniketan, the abode of peace. Rabindranath Tagore later lived in the same house, before going on to establish the university and build many more homes in the vicinity. Like his father, he had also found peace here, and used it to create Nobel Prize winning literature and art. The entire area of home, town and university is commonly referred to as Santiniketan.

Much has changed since then, but the soul of Tagore and his work still lives on. With instagrammable spots, quiet bookstores, quaint cafés, colourful bazaars, sparkling rivulets and golden forests, there is a lot to do and see in the seemingly small town. Here's how you can make the most of your trip to Santiniketan.

How to get to Santiniketan

Santiniketan is well connected by rail and road from Kolkata. The train journey is short and scenic, and is best enjoyed via a non-ac coach to enjoy the local food, music, and sometimes, shopping too. It is best to reserve your seats a few weeks in advance. Best trains: Ganadevta Express (13017), Kavi Guru Express (13016).

The road from Kolkata to Santiniketan is well laid and it takes about three hours to get here should you decide to drive. Within the town, e-rickshaws called Totos, take you everywhere. They can be found easily and are quite reasonable. Most drivers offer to show you around and stay with you for the whole day for a price of Rs500-600. You can also hire a bike and peddle around the town and onward to Sonajhuri Khoai Forest and Kopai River. The town is best explored on foot, to soak in all the local delights.

What to see and do in Santiniketan

Begin your day at Uttarayan Complex where Udyan, Konark, Shyamali, Punasche, and Udichi, five houses built during different phases of Rabindranath Tagore's life stand proud. The sixth, Bichitra, built by his son in 1961, was inaugurated by Jawaharlal Nehru. It serves as a library and museum with Tagore's manuscript, title deeds, letters, pictures and paintings. His awards are displayed here too. At a close distance, Tagore's car, a black Humber can also be seen. Fascinated tourists peeping through the windows, discussing Tagore's life with great passion are also a sight to behold.

Vishva Bharati university campus, the most important place in town, opens for visitors after 1pm. There are no guides but some students do offer to show you around for a small fee. The university offers a range of courses across fields, but is most famous for Sangeet Bhavan, the music department, and Kala Bhavan, the arts department. Famous alumni include former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Nobel laureate and economist Amartya Sen, filmmaker Satyajit Ray and Maharani Gayatri Devi.

Chhatimtala, the birthplace of the Santiniketan gurukul, Upasanagriha, a prayer house made with Belgium glass and a marble floor, Santiniketan, the original home built by Debendranath Tagore in 1863 and Amrakunja, the open air class rooms, are some interesting places to see on the campus. The arts department, Kala Bhavan, is a must visit. Wandering through its dusty path, you can witness works of some of India's most renowned artists and watch students engrossed in creating their own masterpieces.

Lipi's Pottery Studio, close to the Kopai river, is hard to locate but worth getting lost for. Run by Lipi Biswas in her mud and thatch home, it is home to exquisite modern stoneware made entirely by the locals. Khoai Boner Annya Haat, the Saturday market by the river in Sonajhuri Forest, is a must visit too. Every Saturday, craftsmen from adjoining villages collect and display their wares. It is a great place to shop directly from artisans at throwaway prices and is high on local culture.

Where to eat in Santiniketan

Banalakshmi, located a few kilometres off the main town, is popular for its authentic Bengali menu. Kasahara, located inside the Sangeet Bhavan in Vishva Bharati campus, is a great choice for lunch. Set up in 2015 by Debojit Roy, the café is a tribute to Kim Taro Kasahara, a Japanese artist known for his relentless contribution to Santiniketan. The café serves up everything from Bengali meals to Chinese cuisine. Trust us, you wont be disappointed. Tanzil Café, on the main Bolpur road, is a delight to hang out in the evenings and has a beautiful boutique attached to it.

When to visit Santiniketan

Santiniketan is popular all year round, but the best time to go is between September to March. This is also when the town hosts fairs and festivals and its narrow streets are filled with travellers, tourists and students. Craftsmen, musicians, singers and artists assemble from all over Bengal to showcase their skills and trains full of Tagore's devotees make way into the town.

Poush Mela—known for its celebration of music and crafts—is celebrated between the months of December and January, and the Basant Festival in March, during Holi.

Where to stay in Santiniketan

Santiniketan has something for everyone—quaint home-stays, government run tourist houses, small budget hotels, and quiet guesthouses. Most are reasonably priced and are available for booking online.

The best time to visit is during the monsoon and winter seasons. The light rain and the pleasant cool breeze make it a really peaceful combination to visit Shantiniketan. It is the perfect weather for reflection and meditation. Summer is the most inconvenient season to visit Shantiniketan. This is due to the fact that humidity rises during this season as well as the temperature goes up as well. This makes the trip unbearable for the tourists.

Places To Visit In Tour To Shantiniketan

You should be able to hear Shantiniketan calling your name right about now if you wish to experience the joy that art brings to life. Here are the top 5 locations to visit during travel to Shantiniketan:

The Tagore House

This is where the big guy himself hides out. It was constructed by his father and has a sizable, expansive property with well-kept fields encircling the main house. Built in the traditional Bengali style, it features rooms filled with artwork, some of which are empty, and some of which hold everyday items. The Tagore House is the greatest spot to go if you want to see how the great author dealt with the difficulties of everyday life. It is advised to rent a car to explore Shantiniketan, and you can speak to the locals to learn fascinating stories about the various locations.

Shantiniketan's marketing director and history encyclopaedia are both Amar Kutir. It contains a wide variety of items, many of which are hand-stitched, cloth- or lac-made, vibrantly coloured, and mostly used for apparel or home décor and display. Additionally, it serves as a history museum with real artefacts on show. The most significant missing piece is that, contrary to common assumption, Tagore never had absolutely anything to do with the organisations participating in the Indian National Independence uprising.

Kala Bhavan

The internationally renowned educational institution Viswabharati, which Tagore founded, has an art division. When you first enter the building, you will be struck by the electrically created front images. These striking black and white patterns with Aztec-inspired designs that clash with the surrounding surroundings will captivate you like nothing else. With important supporters from all around the world, Kala Bhavan is a well-known location for the instruction of young people in the arts. It should be on tour itineraries because it is adjacent to the Viswabharathi campus.

The Rabindra Bharati Museum

Your artistic, Tagore-hunting holiday comes to an appropriate, pleasant conclusion with this. The art collections in the Rabindra Bharati Museum are as genuine and varied as they come, and they also include collections of songs, poems, and written documents. Manuscripts are also present. This boasts of being one of the most remarkable Tagore effect collection mansions available. It is situated on expansive grounds, large like everything here, and decorated in the same Bengali Zamindari style. Visit here if you want to learn about historical architecture, art, and get a little inner serenity and satisfaction.

Updated: Friday, April 12, 9 a.m. ET: Sunny and dry conditions are forecast throughout the day with a high temperature in the low 70s. Breezy conditions this morning, turning windy by midday with westerly wind gusts of 30-35 mph. Isolated higher peak gusts between 35-40 mph cannot be ruled out between 3-6 p.m.. After a cool start Saturday morning, temperatures will rebound nicely this weekend with highs in the mid 70s Saturday and mid 80s on Sunday amid plentiful sunshine.

Updated: Thursday, April 11, 7:51 p.m. ET: The first round of the Masters has been suspended due to darkness. Round 1 will resume on Friday at 7:50 a.m. with Round 2 tee times beginning as scheduled at 8 a.m.

Updated: Thursday, April 11, 8:11 a.m. ET: First-round tee times are set to begin at 10:30 a.m. off the first tee due to overnight and morning rain.

After a morning of monitoring strong storms that have affected states from Texas to Florida, Masters officials announced the gates will open to the patrons at 9:30 a.m., and honorary starters Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tom Watson will tee off at 10:10, followed by the first tee time in the 89-player field, Jake Knapp and Erik van Rooyen at 10:30.

According to weather.com, thunderstorms are possible around 8:30 a.m., with potentially strong, gusty winds.

Updated: Thursday, April 11, 7 a.m. ET: First-round tee times will be delayed at least an hour because of morning rain. "We continue to monitor the weather closely," read a post from the tournament on X. "Gate openings and tee times have been delayed until further notice. The first round will not begin before 9 a.m."

According to weather.com, it is expected to be cloudy from 7-8 a.m. but there is a chance of scattered thunderstorms from 8-10 a.m.

Updated: Wednesday, April 10 7 p.m. ET : The Masters has issued a weather update, noting that patron admission will be delayed Thursday due to adverse weather conditions expected overnight and into the morning.

"Due to forecasted weather on Thursday, we have decided to delay all gate openings in the morning," the Masters posted on X, formerly Twitter. "All Masters free parking will be closed until further notice while gate openings are delayed. Further updates will be shared no later than 5 a.m. via Masters.com and social channels."

Updated: Wednesday, April 10 10 a.m. ET: AUGUSTA, Ga. – The first round of the 88th Masters Tournament could be affected by inclement weather as dangerous conditions are predicted to arrive early Thursday.

There’s a 90% chance of showers and thunderstorms prior to 1 p.m., with wind gusts of 40-45 mph between 8 a.m. ET and noon. That would create potentially dangerous conditions and push back tee times, possibly bringing Friday into play for the conclusion of Round 1.

Last year’s Masters was also affected by weather, with second-round play pushed to Saturday and third-round play pushed to Sunday, when eventual winner Jon Rahm and co-runner-up Brooks Koepka played 30 holes.

Severe weather began slamming the southern United States on Tuesday night, continued into Wednesday and was expected to reach the Augusta area first thing Thursday.

According to the Masters Tournament weather update:

“A cold front is forecast to bring a band of rain and scattered thunderstorms through the region between 6 a.m.-1 p.m. ET Thursday. Heavy rainfall and occasional wind gusts of 40-45 mph are anticipated over this period. A lull in precipitation should occur behind the cold front between 1-4 p.m. ET before scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms drift back into the region for the late afternoon and evening hours.

“Windy conditions persist Friday under mostly sunny skies as a dry and stable airmass settles into the area. Mostly sunny skies can be expected through the weekend with west to southwesterly winds in the 7-15 mph range.”

  • Thursday: Mostly cloudy with a 90% chance of showers and thunderstorms prior to 1 p.m. ET. Partly cloudy with a 40% chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms after 4 p.m. Forecast rainfall: 1-1 1/2 inches. Wind gusts of 40-45 mph between 8 a.m.-noon. Low: 65F High: 77F Winds: S shifting SW 15-25; gusts 30-35 mph.
  • Friday: Mostly sunny and windy. Noticeably less humid. Low: 54F High: 72F Winds: W 15-20; gusts 30 mph.
  • Saturday: Mostly sunny and warm. Low: 49F High: 78F Winds: WNW turning W 7-15 mph.
  • Sunday: Mostly sunny and warm. Low: 53F High: 84F Winds: W turning SW 7-15 mph.

The Masters has dealt with its share of weather conditions in recent years. The final round of Tiger Woods’ iconic 2019 victory came hours earlier than scheduled to avoid impending storms. Last year’s leaders played 30 holes on Sunday as storms wiped out much of the third round.

This year’s Masters is largely devoid of rainy conditions, with Thursday as the lone exception. According to the official Augusta National weather forecast, there is an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms on Thursday, with an expected rainfall of 1.00-1.50 inches.

“Isolated light showers are possible Tuesday and Wednesday before rain and thunderstorms arrive early Thursday and continue throughout the morning hours. A cold front is expected to pass through in the early afternoon, with diminishing precipitation chances for the remainder of Thursday. Thunderstorm wind gusts of 40-45 mph will be possible,” the official forecast stated.

Conditions are expected to clear up by Thursday afternoon and stay dry through the rest of the tournament. Here’s a day-by-day breakdown of the official Augusta National weather forecast:

  • Monday: Mostly sunny. Low: 48F High: 79F Winds: S 7-10 mph
  • Tuesday : Cloudy with a 25% chance of light showers. Low: 58F High: 77F Winds: SSE 5-10 mph
  • Wednesday : Cloudy with a 20% chance of light showers during the day and a 70% chance of showers and thunderstorms after midnight. Low: 62F High: 80F Winds: S-SE 10-15, gusts up to 20 mph
  • Thursday : Mostly cloudy with an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Windy. Forecast rainfall: 1.00-1.50” Low: 65F High: 78F Winds: S shifting SW 15-20 gusts up to 30 mph
  • Friday : Mostly sunny and windy; noticeably less humid. Low: 56F High: 73F Winds: WNW 15-20 gusts up to 30 mph
  • Saturday : Mostly sunny and warm. Low: 50F High: 78F Winds: WNW turning W 7-12 mph
  • Sunday*: Mostly cloudy. Low: 61F: High 82F Winds: SW 6-13 mph, gusts of 17 mph
