Sheep Shearing Demo

During the months from July to September we shear all our sheep with the hand shears which is the traditional way of sheep shearing. This was a terrific outdoor experience, walking along the cliffs and talking with Pat! The views were terrific!! The ever changing scenes as the ocean fog come in and out, the bashing Atlantic waves- these are things you cannot experience by just going to the Cliffs of Mohr center, along with hords of other people. Please note that this briskly paced walk has a very steep incline at the end. If your balance is questionable or your knees are mildly arthritic- strongly recommend bringing poles. He now farms there and his farm actually borders the Atlantic. He led us on an incredible hike, sometimes a little slippery and muddy but he made sure we alll stayed focused. I couldn’t imagine any tour bus will ever show you the views we got from this particular hike. It took about 4 hours in total. Well worth it. Read more Written October 4, 2023
  • AsItSeemsToMe 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A Good Walk with a Good Guide. It was great to walk with Pat. He is very knowledgeable about the scenery and added his local insight to everything we saw. He is very passionate about the history, his community, and the scenery along the cliffs. He provided plenty of time at each stop to take photos and look around. While he says he isn't a photographer, he can certainly point out sights and angles to get some good shots. In the end, Pat was not a tour guide but more like a friend you just met showing around his home turf. A good walk, a good guide, and someone you'd be glad to meet in the local pub for a pint. The hike along the cliffs from Doolin to the visitor center (4.3 miles) was filled with adventure and great local storytelling. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing the area in relative seclusion with our tour companions from South Africa. We took many photos that we would have never had the opportunity to take without Pats guidance. Our guide Tony was an excellent driver and provided wonderful commentary and history throughout the day. We had plenty of time at each stop and never felt rushed as you often feel on the big-bus tours. We like to walk a lot and this tour allowed plenty of opportunity for that. We got in 3+ miles, but there was no requirement to walk so this tour would work for people who want less walking too. We had a great lunch at a pub and still lots of time to see Kylemore Abbey with all its sites. Read more Written September 19, 2023
  • jeffersond603 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A must-do in Doolin! What a great way to see the cliffs as you pass by acres of farmland and old stone walls. It is a fairly strenuous hike that goes up about 800 vertical feet but it is invigorating and all in our group made it up without an issue. There are plenty of opportunities for breaks whenever you need them. This tour gives you a completely different perspective than simply driving to the visitor's center, and the background information provided by our guide, Ollie, was fascinating. The best part of traveling is to immerse yourself in your destination, and this tour does that perfectly. Visit a traditional working Connemara mountain sheep farm, meet the farmer and view a skilled sheepdog demonstration, a sheep shearing demonstration and a traditional turf cutting demonstration. Available all year. Min 1 Max 50.

Come take an authentic look at farm life in Ireland. This sheep farm is a traditional working Connemara mountain farm which has been in the same family for generations. It has approximately 200 ewes and lambs who roam freely in the mountains overlooking Killary Fjord. On arrival visitors are met by Tom the farmer and have the option to be outfitted with outdoor footwear and rainwear supplied by the farm. Tom starts off the farm tour with a sheepdog herding demonstration. These extremely smart dogs are trained from puppies and it is incredible to watch them in action! In the summer months (July to September), Tom shears the sheep by traditional methods with hand shears. It is an old farm tradition not often seen anymore. The tour also includes a picturesque country walk through the farm grounds, with sweeping views of Killary Fjord and the mountain ranges beyond. The sheep dog demos are all year round and the tour includes a demo of traditional peat/bog cutting. Try your hand at bog-cutting using the slean (turf spade), a centuries-old practice of harvesting peat to heat homes. If there are lambs about (and there usually are), you can count on a few needing bottle-feeding. You’re welcome to lend a hand!

Wicklow & Glendalough with Sheep Farm visit One-day tour

Our partner: Irish Day Tours

Description

Our day tour to Wicklow departs from Suffolk Street outside the Old stone church in Dublin. We begin our journey southwards, traveling up past the Blessington lakes. Our first stop is Baltinglass where you will have half an hour to grab a coffee and have a good browse around the 12 Century abbey founded by Dermot Mac Murrough the then King of Leinster. This is a fantastic ruin with a combination of Cistercian and Irish Romanesque architecture. The arches are the Abbeys most prominent feature with alternate round and square pillars. Explore the ruins and discover some intricate carvings.

Experience the working side of Wicklow with a visit to a working Irish sheep farm. Meet your friendly local farmer Ed who will introduce you to his life, from the diverse farming practices of sheep farming  to organic vegetable growing. The highlight of this stop is a sheepdog exhibition where farmer Ed will coral the sheep with his trusty border collies. We are the only tour company that introduces you to the real working and living side of Wicklow!

After a scenic rural drive we stop off in Laragh at Lynham's of Laragh for lunch. You couldn’t have lunch in a more perfect setting. (Lunch is not included)

We then visit the beautiful valley and Monastic site of Glendalough.  Here was where Saint Kevin settled in the 6th Century, evidence of which still can be seen via 10th/ 11th Century monastic site perched between the hills. Explore the monastic site and take in your surroundings and let your spirit run free. Here you get 1.5 hours to discover the area, before we continue our journey.

We continue on our route heading back to Dublin through the scenic Sally Gap, journeying along the military road which was built after the 1798 rebellion in an attempt to flush out the rebels who were in hiding in the Wicklow mountains. Take your picture at the P.S. I Love you bridge and see Lough Tay – aptly called the Guinness Lake - while surrounded with blanket bog and mountain peaks which are drenched in green and yellow in the summer and pink and purple in the autumn.

Amongst the Farms and Forests of Ireland, there are Ancient Stones and Crosses, Magnificent Castles and Monasteries; the sheep graze along mountain trails and the farmer enjoys live music and a pint in the local pub. Agri Tours are happy to provide these authentic Irish experiences while you visiting Irish Farms.

Your Tour Your Way

Our Testimonials

Ireland West Farm Stay Review

Georgeanne & Lauren

United states .

We spent the afternoon with Eddie Joe on a visit to his working farm in Ireland learning about the animals and crops and peat bogs, and with his neighbour learning about sheep and sheep herding. We were actually mucking about in the fields with them, had tea and felt like part of the family. It was such a rare and unique Irish experience! I highly recommend Ireland West Private Farm Stay if you want an unforgettable, one-of-a-kind experience on an Irish working farm.

Irish farm stay accommodation

The Cappolla Family,

A huge highlight of our visit to Ireland was the last day of our tour, when we spent the day at Ireland West Luxury Farm Stay in Co. Mayo. We spent the morning on the farm, visiting with animals and then learning about the peat bog on a tour of the Irish farm. We even got to cut peat and stack it to dry. Then we spent time with a blacksmith (Patrick at 9ironscraft) who made a fireplace poker with our sons, and then a 9 irons amulet with all of us shaping some of the pieces. Finally we had an Irish farm tour and tasting with the local cheese maker-all in all a really wonderful final day.
