Ferries and cruises from Portsmouth

Portsmouth is Hampshire’s second largest city, and the UK’s only island city, so as you might expect it is big and bold and vibrant and full of life.

This is not a place to visit if you are looking for a peaceful countryside retreat, but if you want somewhere with a bit of life and soul (a lot of life and soul!) then Portsmouth is where you should go.

👍 Hear about the deals first - click here and follow my Mini Cruise Addict page on Facebook (opens in new window).

Located on England’s south coast, Portsmouth boasts theatres, live music venues, art galleries, museums, two cathedrals, nightclubs, restaurants, and even a number of different festivals, depending on what time of the year you decide to visit.

Portsmouth itself was founded in 1180 by merchant Jean De Gisors. He could see the importance of the location regarding a port there, so he built a town around it for his workers to make it easier for them to work the long, hard days he wanted them to. A market soon sprang up and eventually other merchants moved in and the town expanded.

Portsmouth Historical Dockyard, the Portsmouth Museum, the D-Day Museum, Spitbank Fort, Gunwharf Quay (for shopping), and Cumberland House Natural History Museum are just a few of the many and varied activities to experience and places to visit in this most astonishing of cities.

You’ll be surprised at just how much you can see during a short cruise. Whether you opt for two, three or four nights away, make the most of your free time by exploring Europe ’s most spectacular cities, and unwinding on a comfortable, luxurious ship.

Why book a short cruise?

To really make the most of your long weekend, a cruise is an excellent choice. Unlike other methods of travel, a cruise allows you to enjoy every minute of your holiday, from the moment you board the ship. The journey really is half the fun of cruising, and travelling to your destination will be just as memorable as your time in the ports.

Amsterdam Canal

It’s a wonderful way to spend a weekend

There’s no flying involved on a short cruise.

Short cruises will particularly appeal to those who are tired of the rigmarole of checking in for a flight and waiting in a drab airport lounge. With a mini cruise , all you need to do is travel to your nearest port for sailings from the UK, and let the captain whisk you away on a weekend adventure. You can cruise from Southampton , Portsmouth , Liverpool , Newcastle and many more.

Hamburg

You can tick one or two destinations off your bucket list

Many people believe that a short cruise doesn’t allow much time to explore new destinations. However, during a two or three-night mini cruise, you can wander the streets of Bruges or visit the colourful capital of Guernsey. You could navigate the canals of Amsterdam, or admire the architecture of Antwerp . If you don’t quite have a week to spend, you could book a four-night short cruise, allowing you to add a couple of extra destinations to your itinerary, or enjoy a leisurely cruise on the River Seine to see Paris. It really is up to you!

Short cruises offer excellent value

Short cruises lasting two to three nights can cost less than £200 per person. This not only includes sleek and spacious accommodation on award-winning cruise lines, it also comprises access to swimming pools, delicious meals at a variety of restaurants, entertainment, dance classes and even access to the sports deck. Guests can get so much for their money by opting for a short break.

They’re perfect for city lovers

Of all the short break cruise itineraries on offer, many, including holidays with P&O Cruises , stop at some of Europe’s most beautiful cities. The likes of Paris, Hamburg , Amsterdam , Bruges, St Peter Port and Antwerp are all popular ports of call on short cruises. So if you find yourself longing for a weekend in the city, but also enjoy the luxury of travelling on a spectacular cruise ship, a short cruise offers the best of both worlds. The best short cruises for a mini-break with a difference

Everything you need to know about mini-cruises and the ones to book for 2021

best short cruises

Whether you're short on time or simply fancy taking an alternative mini-break, a short cruise could be the answer to getting back into the world and enjoy the luxuries of a cruise ship along the way.

You might be a first-timer looking to try cruising, or a seasoned cruiser opting for a short but sweet trip this time - whatever your reason for considering a short cruise holiday, you'll want to read on to find out everything you need to know about mini-cruises and the best ones to take this year.

What is a short cruise, or mini-cruise?

In a nutshell, a short cruise is a cruise holiday under seven nights. It could be anything from a one-night cruise to a long weekend cruise or five days of exploring a number of destinations - or no places at all.

The typical duration of a mini-cruise is between two and four nights, and often includes one or two ports of call.

A short cruise could take you to somewhere beautiful or nowhere, which would mean no stop offs, allowing you to admire a location from the ship and make the most of the on-board experiences.

What are the benefits of taking a mini-cruise?

Ideal for dipping your toes into the world of cruising if you're a newbie, a mini-cruise is an excellent way to get a feel for holidays at sea. If you've been cruising for years but usually find yourself venturing to far-flung places, a short cruise is a terrific way to explore somewhere closer to home, or simply treat yourself to a few nights on a state-of-the-art ship before holidays abroad are allowed again.

There are many advantages to taking a mini-cruise. For those who have little time for a holiday, a mini-cruise provides another way for you to spend a long weekend, especially if you don't fancy a hotel or self-catering break.

Another benefit is that short cruises are affordable, giving you a purse-friendly option if you love cruises but your budget doesn't stretch to a fortnight in the Caribbean or Asia. You'll find many two-night cruises available for under £300, which is cheaper than some hotel stays in the UK!

What's the best way to plan a short cruise?

The beauty of a shorter sailing is that you don't need to invest as much time, energy and money when it comes to planning, compared to when you're booking a seven or 14-night escape.

Planning ahead is always advisable to bag the cabin type of your choice, get a table at the top restaurants or experience the theatre show of your choice, but mini- cruises aren't just for early birds. There are last-minute short cruises available if you're looking to book a quick getaway at home this summer.

Which cruise lines offer mini-cruises?

You'll find the likes of Princess Cruises , Fred.Olsen Cruise Lines , P&O Cruises , Cunard and MSC Cruises operating mini-cruises that take you around the UK, to Northern Europe, Spain, France, or nowhere at all so they can show off their fantastic on-board facilities, which can range from sparkling spas to top-notch dining.

New cruise line Tradewind Voyages also offers short cruises for exploring various regions of the UK this summer, while Virgin Voyages has launched long weekends from Portsmouth that allow you to get a taste of its stylish new ship this August.

What are the best mini-cruises?

We've done all the searching to bring you the best short cruises to book this year. Whether you're looking to discover more of the UK this summer or see the twinkling lights of Belgium's Christmas markets, you've come to the right place.

Here are the best mini-cruises for 2021.

See Dorset and spend five days being entertained with Princess Cruises

best short cruises

This summer, Princess Cruises is launching a selection of Summer Seacations , so you can spend between three and seven nights sailing around Southampton while you experience the excellent entertainment, stylish dining and spa facilities on board. The short cruises will take place from July and September, allowing you to soak up the summer sun on a romantic break or a family getaway kids will love.

Try the five-day cruise on the sleek Sky Princess, which stops at Portland for you to spend a day in Dorset, from £549. During the short sailing, you won't want to miss the incredible restaurants and West End-style theatre shows. Plus, there are plenty of activities to keep children entertained if you're travelling as a family.

Spend four days browsing Belgium and Holland's Christmas markets with Cunard

best short cruises

Christmas is a fantastic time of year for a short cruise, when you can see the twinkling lights of Europe's prettiest cities and do your Christmas shopping. Cunard offers one of the loveliest end of year sailings, with its four-day round trip from Southampton to Belgium and Holland.

Priced from £479, the mini-cruise takes you to vibrant Rotterdam, before you visit chocolate haven Bruges. While travelling on the Queen Victoria, you can watch impressive live music performances, tuck into afternoon tea and attend the cruise line's famous gala balls.

Go for five days of eco-luxury on the UK's east coast with Tradewind Voyages

sustainable cruise ship from tradewind voyages, golden horizon

If discovering the beauty of Britain by sea wasn't exciting enough, this summer you can do it from Tradewind Voyages' new eco-luxury cruise ship, Golden Horizon.

Travelling from Harwich to Leith, you'll spend five days exploring Whitby, Newcastle and Edinburgh, from £1,049. Your time on the world's largest square-rigged sailing vessel, which is 70% powered by nature, could be spent unwinding in the spa or three pools, or relaxing in the piano bar. There's amazing dining to experience, too.

Sail to south Cornwall on a three-day cruise with P&O Cruises

best short cruises

Set sail for Dorset's Jurassic coastline and the Cornish coast this summer as you get to know the UK from the water with P&O Cruises. Departing from Southampton on a three-day cruise, from £249, you'll have plenty of time to drink in sea views and enjoy the restaurants, pools and spa on Britannia.

There are comfortable, air-conditioned cabins, as well as food, dance classes, the children's club, entertainment and the gym included. A family-friendly way to experience the south coast this summer, Britannia has plenty on board for travellers of all ages.

Everything You Need to Know About British Isles and Ireland Cruises

short cruises portsmouth

The British Isles, including England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and all the offshore islands, and Ireland offers an enormously varied cruise experience.

Beautiful coastlines are punctuated by historic ports and cities — including Cork , Liverpool and Dover — leading to castles and stately homes rich in culture and heritage. There's rolling green countryside filled with chocolate box villages, rolling vineyards and dramatic mountain landscapes, plus traditional pubs and exciting capital cities like London , Edinburgh, Dublin and Belfast.

Outlying islands include diverse destinations like the Isle of Man, off northwest England; the Outer Hebrides, the Orkney Isles and Shetland Isles , off Scotland; and the Channel Islands, self-governing British Crown dependencies near France, which include Guernsey . The unspoiled Isles of Scilly are a thrilling place to visit on a cruise, too, with gin-clear waters and sandy coves, lying off Cornwall in the southwest of England.

From the best time to take a cruise to the kind of itineraries you can expect and the cruise lines sailing, here's everything you need to know about a British Isles and Ireland cruises.

A Seasonal Guide to British Isles and Ireland Cruises

White Cliffs of Dover

With four distinct seasons, the British Isles and Ireland are best seen in spring through to autumn (fall), though most cruises depart in summer, when temperatures can reach 90°F, but generally average 75°F.

Spring (March, April and May) is generally mild and a beautiful time to see the countryside in full bloom and to visit towns and attractions when they're less crowded. In cities, in the countryside and on the coast, cherry blossom, wisteria, blue bells and wild garlic are blooming, though the weather is often wet, with April showers prevalent.

Summer (June, July and August) is the peak vacation period with the warmest weather. Days are long from May until late summer, with darkness falling well after 9 p.m. Pub beer gardens fill, garden estates are filled with beautiful flowers and beaches around the islands fill.

Fall, or autumn (September, October and November), sees fewer British Isles and Ireland cruises, though there are still itineraries available in October into early November, when the countryside is lit up with orange, red and yellow tints. Winter (December, January and February) is the coldest season and very few if any cruises operate round-Britain at this time.

Mainstream, Luxury and Even Expeditions Cruise Lines Offer British Isles & Ireland Cruises

Hebridean Sky

Take your pick from a wide range of ships of all shapes and sizes sail that around the British Isles and Ireland. Most tend to be midsize and small ships and Southampton , Britain's largest cruise port, offers the widest choice of itineraries. This south of England cruise port and is home to British lines Cunard and P&O Cruises (though they are owned by American cruise giant Carnival Corp.), which offer a classic British cruise experience.

Other British lines sailing the British Isles and Ireland includes Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines , Saga Cruises and Ambassador Cruise Line , including sailings from Dover and London Tilbury .

Upscale lines include Hebridean Island Cruises , specializing in luxury small-ship sailing around Scotland and the Scottish isles, and Silversea , Regent Seven Seas and Oceania offers around-Britain voyage.

Other lines operating cruises around the British Isles and Ireland include big names such as Princess Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line and Celebrity Cruises . Hurtigruten , Aurora Expeditions and Noble Caledonia also offer British Isles cruises, while The Majestic Line also specializes in small ship sailing around Scotland and the Scottish isles.

British Isles & Ireland Cruise Itineraries

Kirkwall (Photo:johnbraid/Shutterstock)

A full British Isles and Ireland cruise is typically 14 nights, with shorter variations from three nights that might skip on Ireland or stick to a swathe of the UK, rather than all of the British Isles. You'll find five- seven-, 10- and 12-night variations also available.

The compact nature of the British Isles and Ireland means you'll never have more than two sea days on longer cruises, with a maximum of one day at sea on shorter itineraries, leaving plenty of time to explore the ports of call.

Mini cruises :  Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines is the main line that offers regular short break sailings, including roundtrip voyages from Liverpool focusing on either Scotland or Ireland. Keep an eye out for lines that occasionally fill the gap between longer overseas sailings by offering short voyages, such as a three-night sailing from Liverpool and around the coast of Scotland to Newcastle.

Scotland : It's famous for dramatic landscapes of lochs, mountains and heather-covered moorland, coupled with a fascinating history and prized whiskies. Three- to 10-night Scotland trips with companies like Hebridean Island Cruises and The Majestic Line take in inspiring destinations, including the Isle of Jura, where the 200 residents are outnumbered by more than 5,000 deer, and Skye, famous for its connection with Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Round-Britain : Most lines offer 7-10-night itineraries that circumnavigate Britain and include a visit to one or more outlying islands. For example, Saga's cruise from Tilbury call at Belfast in Northern Ireland, with its maritime history, the Isles of Scilly lying off the coast of Cornwall on the southernmost tip of England — which have some of the highest concentrations of prehistoric remains in Britain — and the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea, which has its own language, Manx (although everyone speaks English).

British Isles & Ireland : A 13- or 14-night itinerary, generally departing from London Tilbury, Dover, Southampton or Portsmouth, covers all the highlights. Following the east coast, cruises sail north to Edinburgh and the Scottish Highlands, which are home to fabulous castles, before moving to the Orkney Islands and Glasgow on the west coast. Sailing south to Liverpool, these itineraries will then take in Dublin and Cork, where passengers can kiss the legendary stone at Blarney Castle to be blessed with the gift of eloquence.

British Isles & Ireland Cruise Port Highlights

Titanic Museum Belfast

British Isles and Ireland ports of call range from major cities on the respective mainlands to small islands with villages fit for a postcard.

Highlights include London, Edinburgh , Glasgow, Belfast and Cork, each with excellent museums, shopping, thriving food scenes and some of the world's best pubs. There's more. Liverpool has a fantastic museum and cultural scene; in Dover you have the spectacular White Cliffs and access to some fantastic vineyards in the Garden of England (Kent). While the Orkney Islands and Scilly offers show-stopping nature, including a wealth of marine and bird life.

Essential Tips for Passengers on a British Isles & Ireland Cruise

Portsmouth, UK (Photo: stocker1970/Shutterstock)

British weather can be unpredictable . Whatever the season, there's always the chance of a rain shower, so don't forget an umbrella or purchase an inexpensive one upon arrival and a light rain jacket. The south of England's weather can vary considerable from say, the Scottish Highlands and islands, so you may need to get creative with layers. It's not uncommon for example for beaches and city parks to fill with sunbathers on the south coast and in London, Oxford and Bath, whereas you might be in for a more windswept beach walk in the far north.

Consider school holiday periods . If you prefer to travel in the company of other adults, check out British school vacation and half term dates in advance. While holiday dates can vary slightly from school to school, they are usually in late May, late July through to the first week of September and mid-October.

Alternatively, book with adult-only lines like Saga, or lines such as Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines and Ambassador Cruise Line that attract seniors and more mature passengers. The Majestic Line and Hebridean Island Cruises do not accept children under the age of 12 and 9, respectively.

Check inclusions and currency . Lines that mostly cater to British passengers, including  P&O Cruises and Saga, include tips in the fare. On others, such as Fred. Olsen, gratuities are not included, though they are low. On ships operated by all of these lines, onboard prices are in pounds sterling. On lines that are not based in the U.K. the onboard currency will be Euros or U.S. dollars. On land, the British pound is used in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and the Euro in the Republic of Ireland.

Tower Bridge raised for as passing cruise ship

"Onshore tipping isn't expected in the U.K." is somewhat of a myth . While it's fair to say the U.K. and Ireland do not have the same tipping culture as in the United States, most restaurants expect a small gratuity gesture. Almost all restaurants in the British capital, London, will add a 12.5 to 15 percent service charge. It's less common outside of London, but it does happen and when it is not included, it's still fine to tip in the region of 12.5 to 15 percent.

Bartenders in pubs and bars don't expect to be tipped. However, if you've developed a rapport with the bartender or have received exceptional service, you can show your appreciation by saying "and one for yourself," which is an offer to buy him or her a drink. Usually the bartender will take the money as a gratuity, rather than pouring a drink.

Consider the distance from the port to the destination . By this, we mean Cobh into Cork (15 miles) and London Tilbury into London (27 miles). It's also 26 miles from Greenock into Glasgow and 15. miles from Rosyth into the center of Edinburgh. If you're making plans independently, consider how long it will take you to return to your cruise ship.

How To Plan A Romantic Getaway In Portsmouth, New Hampshire

C harming local shops, delicious culinary options, painterly sunsets, historic buildings, and a walkable downtown along the beautiful Piscataqua River make Portsmouth, New Hampshire, a fun getaway destination. By simply adding a few couple-focused itinerary experiences, it is easy to plan a romantic Portsmouth interlude.

Some information in this piece was obtained during a sponsored press trip, but all recommendations are my own.

Romantic Stay In Portsmouth, New Hampshire

The most important part of a romantic getaway is booking the right hotel. When looking for a romantic hotel, you want to consider the ease of your stay. The hotel should be beautiful, that’s a given. You should be able to walk out of the door, preferably hand-in-hand, and enjoy the quaint charm of the city. A personalized romance hotel package easily enhances your special stay.

The Residence Inn Portsmouth Downtown/Waterfront offers all these experiences and more. With a pre-stay call to the hotel, you can easily set up a custom-room romance setup to surprise your special someone. Steps from the front door are all the waterfront restaurants and pubs. It also offers easy access for strolling the brick sidewalks to meander to and around the downtown shops and eateries.

Pro Tip: Valet your car and enjoy your Portsmouth getaway on foot — no parking worries.

Sunset Cruise

Sunsets are intrinsically romantic and sunset sails with your favorite someone set an alluring tone for the evening. Portsmouth Harbor Cruises offers a 1.5-hour sunset cruise around Portsmouth Harbor and the Piscataqua River. On a perfect night, the sun sets red, orange, and pink, decorating the sky with a kaleidoscope of color. Set your camera on night mode to capture the stunning light and dancing reflections off the water.

As you return to the dock, the city lights, framed by one of the river-crossing bridges, imparts a warm, twinkling glow of possibilities.

Pro Tip: Portsmouth Harbor Cruises operates out of a small shack in the harbor section of the waterfront — between the working harbor and the waterfront restaurants and bars.

Dining In Portsmouth, New Hampshire

After your romantic sunset cruise, enjoy a table for two at one of Portsmouth’s many restaurant options. From brew-pub hopping to spectacular views of the city and harbor to charming coffee shops, you will find lots of great eats in Portsmouth.

Rooftop At The Envio

Elegant yet cozy, the Rooftop at The Envio is a fantastic choice for a dinner for two. Enjoy dinner on the porch or cocktails on the rooftop deck. Rooftop at The Envio is perched high above Portsmouth offering one of the best panoramic views of the city.

The Envio Shrimp Cocktail is a perfect starter — jumbo shrimp with a not-too-spicy Bloody Mary cocktail sauce and a smooth honey lemon aioli. A New England coastal classic, dive into Envio’s Grand Maine Lobster Roll — succulent lobster tossed in a lemon mayonnaise on a perfectly toasted brioche bun. Turf lovers will enjoy the Korean barbecued boneless short rib with tamari lime carrots, broccolini, and bamboo sticky rice.

Pro Tip: Secure reservations for after your sunset cruise. Envio is a just short walk from where the cruise docks.

Thirsty Moose Taphouse

If your dining style is a sports bar tavern, then the Thirsty Moose Taphouse is the place for your romantic dinner. Great pub grub is served up in the large, open dining room surrounded by wall-to-wall televisions projecting all the games all the time.

Pizzas, burgers, sandwiches, and other traditional pub bites grace the extensive menu. A delicious and “healthy” starter, the fried brussel sprouts are coated with red pear, gorgonzola, bacon, and balsamic glaze. Another great starter are the prime rib sliders smothered in caramelized onions and horseradish sour cream sauce for the win. An alternative to their yummy pizzas and burgers, a tasty entrée is the Create Your Own Mac & Cheese. Fun add-ons like pulled pork, hot dogs, steak tips, or buffalo chicken make it uniquely your own.

With dozens of regional beers on tap, it is fun to taste test your way to a favorite brew.

Popovers On The Square

A leisurely brunch is key to every romantic getaway. Downtown, Popovers On The Square serves delectable breakfast and brunch items to satisfy the morning hangries. Thick French toast sticks are served with whipped cream, fresh berries, and New Hampshire maple syrup. Classic brunch fare, the smoked salmon plate served with cream cheese, pickled red onions, and a popover is delicious.

Don’t neglect to try the namesake popovers with creamy maple butter.

Strawbery Banke Museum

History buffs will enjoy Portsmouth’s Strawbery Banke Museum — a living museum of collected homes in the Puddle Dock neighborhood. The museum’s buildings and artifacts date from when the Indigenous Abenaki people settled the area to present day life. Buildings were collected and moved to Puddle Dock, allowing the museum to showcase the changing day-to-day lives of early settlers through historic exhibits and costumed docents.

Buildings from a wide timeline include the Goodwin Mansion circa 1811, the Penhallow House circa 1750, the Lowd House circa 1810, and the Reproduction Wigwam built in 2021. Beautiful heirloom gardens, herb gardens, and historical landscapes bring an artistic and practical touch to the museum grounds.

Pro Tip: The museum is a 15-minute walk from downtown Portsmouth through a charming old neighborhood.

Prescott Park

After your visit to the Strawbery Banke Museum, head toward the waterfront to enjoy Prescott Park . Ten acres of landscaped garden beds, sculptures, and park benches; it is a lovely spot to hold hands and stroll along the meandering pathways.

Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion

Part of the New Hampshire State Park system, the Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion was home to New Hampshire’s first governor, Benning Wentworth. The massive 40-room mansion sits on the banks of Little Harbor. For a small fee, you can visit the interior of the mansion and garner a peek into the aristocratic life of Colonial New England.

For some fresh air and sunshine, take the easy 1.5-mile hike on the Little Harbor Loop Trail , which takes you through Creek Farm and the Portsmouth Conservation Land woodlands and waterfront.

Shopping for a memento of your wonderful getaway with your favorite person reflects your personality as a couple. The perfect souvenir could be fine jewelry from Market Square Jewelers or Springer’s Jewelers . Foodies will go wild over the selection of finishing salts at Salt Cellar . Explore a few unique flavor-enhancers like Cyprus Black Sea Salt, Ginger Root Sea Salt, Porcini Mushroom Sea Salt, Icelandic Licorice Sea Salt, and other mind bending flavors. During your walk through downtown, you will discover independent antique shops, galleries, boutiques, and bookstores.

The Hill is a small section of Portsmouth where 17th- and 18th-century historic homes in the Italian North End neighborhood faced the urban renewal fight and won several victories. Much of the neighborhood fell to the modern-day projects that make Portsmouth the vibrant city it is today. Several of the historic buildings were moved to the Strawbery Banke Museum. Some were left standing and are still privately owned, while others have been reimagined into businesses.

Portsmouth Road Trip

Portsmouth is between Boston, Massachusetts, to the south and Bangor, Maine, to the north. It is close to vibrant and picturesque coastal cities. If you have a few more days to extend your getaway, consider a Boston to Bangor road trip. A fun short trip from Portsmouth is to Freeport , Maine, home of the L.L. Bean flagship store.

The Fall Guy does not fall short

short cruises portsmouth

In “The Fall Guy,” Ryan Gosling trades his dream house (Barbie) for the sandy shores, embodying the quintessential beach vibe. However, in “The Fall Guy,” his playground is the world of stunts, and he excels in this new gig.

Gosling seamlessly transitions from his Oscar-nominated Ken role to Colt Seavers, an embattled Everyman who endures a 12-story fall, crashes through glass, and executes an epic car jump, among other daring feats in the breezy delight of “Fall Guy.”

Under the direction of David Leitch, a former stunt double for the likes of Brad Pitt, the 1980s Lee Majors TV show undergoes a transformation into an action-comedy homage to the unsung heroes of the stunt world. Gosling and Emily Blunt

sparkle as amiable exes who find themselves reunited under extraordinary circumstances.

“I’m not the hero of this story. I’m just the stunt guy,” muses Colt Seavers (Gosling) in voiceover, introducing us to his world. Widely considered Hollywood’s premier stuntman, Colt’s career hits a snag when a stunt goes horribly wrong, leaving him with a broken back and a fractured love life.

A year later, Colt is down on his luck, parking cars as a valet at a burrito joint when a call from producer Gail Meyer (Hannah Waddingham) changes his fortunes. Jody, now a rising director, needs Colt in Sydney for her ambitious sci-fi epic “Metalstorm.” However, upon his arrival, Colt discovers that Jody neither requested nor wants his presence.

Despite the rocky start, Colt’s skills are soon put to the test as he’s tasked with finding Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), an A-list actor who has mysteriously vanished. Alongside his friend and stunt coordinator Dan Tucker (Winston Duke), Colt embarks on a wild adventure that involves going undercover, encountering shady characters, and even teaming up with a French-speaking dog.

As Colt delves deeper into the mystery surrounding Tom’s disappearance, he finds himself entangled in a web of deceit and danger, where nothing is as it seems. With each twist and turn of the plot, Colt must rely on his wit, resourcefulness, and sheer determination to uncover the truth and bring Tom home.

Amidst the heart-pounding action and pulse-pounding excitement, “The Fall Guy” also explores themes of friendship, loyalty, and the power of redemption. As Colt navigates the treacherous world of Hollywood, he learns valuable lessons about trust, forgiveness, and the true meaning of heroism.

With its exhilarating action sequences, charismatic performances, and witty dialogue, “The Fall Guy” is a rollicking adventure that will keep audiences entertained from start to finish. Gosling’s portrayal of Colt Seavers is a tour de force, showcasing the actor’s versatility and magnetic screen presence.

For fans of the original TV series and newcomers alike, “The Fall Guy” offers a fresh and exciting take on the beloved characters, while paying homage to the spirit of the original. With its blend of humor, heart, and high-octane thrills, this is one action-comedy that delivers on all fronts. GO SEE THIS FILM! 4 ½ stars out of 5

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

short cruises portsmouth

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea on Monday test-fired suspected short-range ballistic missiles into the sea, the country’s neighbors said, as speculation swirled that it could soon launch a banned satellite into orbit.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the weapons launched from the North’s capital region flew about 300 kilometers (185 miles) before crashing in the waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan. The ranges suggest the weapons could likely target sites in South Korea.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff strongly condemned the launches, saying they were a “clear provocation” that threatens peace on the Korean Peninsula. It said it will maintain readiness to “overwhelmingly” respond to North Korean provocations in step with its military alliance with the United States.

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi told reporters that North Korea launched at least one ballistic missile that flew 250 kilometers (155 miles) at a maximum altitude of about 50 kilometers (30 miles). He said that North Korea’s repeated missiles tests and other provocative actions threaten the peace and safety of Japan, the region and the international community.

Japan’s coast guard urged ships to use caution against falling objects, but there were no immediate reports of damage.

North Korea in recent months has maintained an accelerated pace in weapons testing as it continues to expand its military capabilities while diplomacy with the United States and South Korea remained stalled. Observers say North Korea likely believes an upgraded weapons arsenal would give it leverage to win greater concessions from the U.S. if negotiations resume.

North Korea said Saturday that it tested a “super-large” cruise missile warhead and a new anti-aircraft missile in a western coastal area earlier last week. In early April, North Korea also test-launched what it called a solid-fuel intermediate-range missile with hypersonic warhead capabilities, a weapon that experts say is meant to attack remote targets in the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam and beyond.

In past years, North Korea has test-fired nuclear-capable missiles designed to strike sites in South Korea, Japan and the mainland U.S. Many experts say North Korea already possesses nuclear missiles that can reach all of South Korea and Japan, but it has yet to develop functioning intercontinental ballistic missiles that can travel to the continental U.S.

In response to North Korea’s evolving nuclear threats, the United States and South Korea have been strengthening their bilateral military drills and trilateral exercises with Japan. On Monday, the chairman of South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, Kim Myung-soo, met with U.S. Space Command Commander Stephen N. Waiting for discussions on countering North Korean threats, according to South Korea’s military.

Some experts say North Korea could launch its second spy satellite this month to mark a key anniversary such as the April 15 birthday of its founder Kim Il Sung, the late grandfather of leader Kim Jong Un, or the April 25 founding anniversary of a predecessor of the North’s military.

U.N. Security Council resolutions ban North Korea from launching both ballistic missiles and satellites. The world body considers a satellite launch a test of its prohibited ballistic missile technology.

South Korea’s military said Monday that it had detected evidence that North Korea is preparing for a spy satellite launch but there are no signs that it’s imminent.

Last November, North Korea placed what it called its first military spy satellite into orbit, though there are widespread doubts about its capability. In late December, Kim Jong Un said North Korea would launch three additional military spy satellites in 2024.

Associated Press writer Mari Yamaguchi in Tokyo contributed to this report.
