Gay "Sides": How Language Frees Us to be Ourselves

• Research finds that of all sexual behaviors that occurred during gay men's last sexual event, those involving the anus were the least common.

The gay male dating app, Grindr, recently added the sexual preference I created beyond just top, bottom, and vers when it comes to gay men engaging in intercourse: "side." People often ask me why I created a new term. Here is why.

We humans are funny about naming stuff, aren’t we? It’s almost as though something doesn’t exist unless we name it. When we don’t give a name or title to some type of behavior, it only exists in the shadows, spoken about in whispers, if at all. But when we name it, we bring it into the light, into our conversations, and it becomes real.

That’s what happened in 2013 when, in an article I wrote for the Huffington Post, “Guys on the Side,” I created the term “side” for gay men who aren’t into being a “top” or a “bottom” or practicing anal penetration. The top is the one who penetrates, and the bottom is the one who receives it. Why? Because up until that time in the gay community, having “real sex” was only about penetration. And in most gay male circles, this is still the case. It is a cultural norm. There is no acknowledgment of another way in which we expressed our erotic desires and had satisfying sex. Anything else wasn’t considered “normal.”

The term “Side” was created when in 2010, I was talking with some colleagues about “tops” (gay men who prefer the insertive role during penetration) and “bottoms” (gay men who prefer the receptive role during penetration) and outed myself for being a gay man who doesn’t engage in anal intercourse at all. I joked, “Boxes have a bottom and a top—why can’t men like me be sides? Why don’t we have sides in this discussion?”

We all laughed, but I got to thinking about this later and realized I was tired of feeling guilty, as though I was an oddball because I’ve never had penetrative sex. People even called me a “virgin” because I wasn’t into anal, and it felt to me like an insult. Being a “top,” “bottom,” or “vers” (short for "versatile," or someone who could go either way) were the only acceptable models in the gay community, and I felt dissed for not fitting into the mold. But as I’ve said and taught for many years, sex is what you think sex is, not what some outside person says it is.

Before writing the 2013 article I searched everywhere I could, but never found anyone else using the term “side.” Then when the article started to get spread around, I was amazed at the hundreds of emails I was getting from guys telling me how grateful they were that someone validated their sexual behavior, and how it made them feel empowered. About a year and a half ago I formed a Facebook group called “Side Guys” and some of the guys in the group started a petition to Grindr, the gay dating app, to add “side” to their list of preferred positions and filters. And now that Grindr has updated its settings, gay men are adding it as a sexual position to their app self-identifying as a side.

Terms are even being created in Spanish, French, and in Asian languages. Mike Henry, a comedian and sex educator, recently created a humorous short video around the theme of “Sides.” I couldn’t be prouder.

History of Individuals and Couples Not Engaging in Penetration

“Side” behavior isn’t something new. It’s been around forever—but we just didn’t have a snappy term to describe it in the gay community.

By the 1980s the term “outercourse” began being used to describe sexual activity between people that doesn’t involve vaginal or anal penetration. The practice of outercourse largely gained popularity due to the growing awareness that people needed to practice safe sex and was mostly applied to heterosexual couplings.

Back in 2011, an article was published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine i n which researchers surveyed 25,000 gay and bisexual men in America about their most recent sexual encounters, and only 36 percent said they had bottomed, and 34 percent said they had topped. Nearly 65 percent of gay and bisexual men didn’t have intercourse as part of their most recent sexual experience at all. The lead author of the study, Joshua Rosenberger, said: “Of all sexual behaviors that men reported occurring during their last sexual event, those involving the anus were the least common.” According to this research, “sides” appear to be the majority.

I can practically hear the groans out there—people saying, “What? Another name? This is getting out of hand!” But think about it. Terminology always evolves as we discover more. We wouldn’t use a medical manual from the 1950s or before when researching how to treat a problem. (Leeches, anyone?) The more we discover, the more we come up with new names for things, and this is true of sexuality as well.

Since “sides” has been acknowledged out there, people have added to the definition and naming many sub-varieties in the category. A side can be a cisgender male, a transgender male (transman), or an intersex male. In addition, a side can be a masculine male, a feminine male, a nonbinary male, or an androgynous male.

Furthermore, a side can be a gay male, a bisexual male, a pansexual male, or fall under the ace umbrella (asexual male/graysexual male/demisexual male, etc.). It is not true that sides are automatically asexual. While they can be, the misconception is that sides are not having sex because they are not engaging in intercourse—however, they are engaging in everything else sexual with other people.

Welcome to the "Sideverse"

A side can have multiple sub-descriptions, including:

• 100% Side: A side who may have engaged in anal sex or anal play in the past, but now prefers to exclusively engage in non-penetrative sex. This may be due to pain associated with anal sex called Anodyspareunia, or severe and frequent painful receptive sex (PRAI)
• Power Side: A side who likes taking charge of a sexual situation.
• Passive Side: A side who likes someone else to take charge in a sexual situation.
• Dom Side: A side who prefers to be dominant during sex.
• Sub Side: A side who prefers to submit, i.e., to be dominated.
• Switch Side: A side who may be a Dom with one partner, and a Sub with another (or even with the same partner).
• Frot Side: A side who likes to engage in frottage, a male-to-male sexual activity that usually involves direct penis-to-penis contact. It can involve one’s hand, trying to bring the two together for pleasure, but isn’t always a necessity in the act.
• Top Side: A side who prefers the insertive role in occasional anal play or anal sex. In addition, he can even be a Dom (dominant) Top Side, a Sub (submissive) Top Side, or a Switch Top Side (switching between being dominant and submissive).
• Bottom Side: A side who prefers the receptive role in occasional anal play or anal sex. In addition, he can even be a Sub (submissive) Bottom Side, a Dom (dominant) Bottom Side, or a Switch Bottom Side (switching between being dominant and submissive).
• Vers Side: A side who has no preferences regarding anal sex role in occasional anal play or anal sex.
• Side-ish//Sometimes a Side/Mostly a Side: A side who occasionally engages in anal sex or anal play.
• Oral Side: A side who likes oral sex. This can include blowjobs (fellatio), rimjobs (analingus), and/or cunnilingus (in the case of pre-op or no-op transmen, or sides who are bisexual/pansexual).
• Gold Star/Orthodox Side: A side who has never engaged in anal sex or anal play in the past. And if and when he does, the “gold star” won’t apply anymore.

It is important to remember that in all these categories, side is the main preference. So, all you “sides” out there, take a victory lap and stand tall (or lie down) for who you are. And don’t let anyone tell you that you’re a “virgin” or aren’t having “real” sex. You’re a “side guy.”

Hi everybody! I'd need your help to translate (and to understand what it means!!) "side trip". The complete sentence is as follows: Reimbursement for any expenses for “side trips” It is included in a company's policy. Thanks a lot!

Hi, You live in Rome and you have to do a business trip to Florence. You drive up the A1 and you see the sign to Deruta, and you decide that you'd like to buy some ceramiche, and you do so. Your "main trip" is to Florence, your "side trip" is to Deruta. I found "side-trip" untranslated in the middle of Italian sentences which makes me think that there might not be a common form in Italian. Maybe: ???? viaggio secondario viaggetto/ietto ????

I spoke to Briggs & Reiley CEO Richard Krulik about what makes a good carry-on and listed the best carry-on luggage to buy now. Krulik only provided general shopping guidance, he did not make any product recommendations.

Spinner wheels: "You want smooth wheels since that makes a huge difference when you're rolling the bag through a very long terminal," says Krulik. 360-degree spinner wheels are the best as they can rotate in any direction and will glide smoothly at the airport or train station.

Additional pockets: "A front pocket is always a real plus on a carry-on because you may want quick access to a magazine or a light jacket," says Krulik. Some carry-ons also have extra back pockets.

Telescopic handle: "You also want a firm solid handle that's not flimsy or wobbly," says Krulik. An adjustable handle is also important as we're all different heights, he adds.

Locks: You must buy a carry-on with built-in locks or lockable ones. TSA-approved locks can help keep your bag safe on the off chance that you need to check it in at the gate. You can also use your carry-on to hold travel documents instead of using the safe in your hotel room.

Durability: Ballistic nylon is the strongest and most long-lasting durable material, according to Krulik. That said, reinforced polyester is also a great option if you're looking for hard-sided luggage says Krulik. Before you shop, also make sure to look at a brand's testing requirements. Brands will usually test the bag's wheels on uneven surfaces to see how they hold up, and check how strong the outer shell is by subjecting the bags to drop tests.

Style: This depends on personal preference. Maybe you want a monogrammed travel suitcase or a bag that stands out from the rest - maybe in a pastel color? You'll want to think of your bag as an accessory, says Krulik. Keep your personal style in mind when you shop.

Size: Every airplane has different carry-on requirements, that said most domestic airlines require that your carry-on be 22 inches x 14 inches x 9 inches in size. International airlines are a bit different, while many follow the same domestic rules, some airlines prefer carry-ons only to be under 22 inches tall. Either way, check your chosen airline's baggage size requirements before purchasing any of the below.

Samsonite is a brand I swear by, having owned their luggage pretty much my entire adult life. The Proxis is one of their newer collections and a great option if you prefer hard-sided luggage. It has dual spinner wheels for maneuverability, an adjustable aluminum handle and a rugged exterior that won't get bumped or bruised during your travels. It also has a USB port, in case you want to charge any devices and a TSA-approved lock for safety. The interior has mesh pockets for additional storage and cross straps to hold your garments. Since this is a smart suitcase, you may have to remove the installed battery during security check, so keep that extra step in mind.

Briggs & Riley Essential Expandable Carry-On

Briggs & Riley makes some of my favorite carry-ons and I love them for their lifetime warranty - if you break a zip or see a dent in your suitcase, you can send the suitcase to the brand to have it repaired for free. This particular option is available in three colors and can also be monogrammed, making it easy to identify in a sea of similar-looking luggage. It has a TSA-approved lock and features the brand's flagship expandable and compression technology which allows your suitcase to hold more, without increasing its dimensions. The handle is adjustable too, and there is a carry handle on top, on the bottom and on its sides. There is also a built-in garment folder to make packing easier and zipped pockets on the interior for any essentials.

This aesthetic carry-on is one of my favorites as it stands out from the other options on this list. It has a durable polycarbonate hard shell build and is available in multiple colors. It has spinner wheels like our other options and also has top and side carry handles. It also has TSA locks and is expandable just in case you need to fit more in. The interior has compression straps to hold your clothes, and also a separate pocket where you can store dirty clothes or undergarments. While it doesn't have an exterior pocket, it does come with an additional small pocket on the interior that is designed to hold any small valuables.

Terra 45L Carry-On Luggage

This is the best combination of both soft-side and hard-side luggage. It's made from polyester and polycarbonate. It has 360-degree spinner wheels like the other options and also has multiple exterior pockets for any travel documents or essentials. It has a designated laptop compartment, is expandable and also has a water-resistant exterior - perfect for unpredictable weather. The inside has compression straps and mesh pockets for storage. Plus, the product is made from recycled bottles, making this one of the most sustainable items on this list.

Wrangler Smart Luggage

This budget-friendly carry-on sets itself apart thanks to its convenient cup holder attached to the bag. It also has multidirectional spinner wheels, top and side handles and is expandable, if needed. It even features a phone holder and also has a USB port option for your devices. The interior has one large zipped pocket and a side with compression straps. It's the most basic interior layout compared to the other options, but at its price, it's still one of the best carry-ons you can buy.

Away is another great luggage brand and they make both carry-on suitcases and duffel bags. The Weekender is a great pick for short trips and can hold a 15-inch laptop plus multiple changes of clothes. It has a detachable shoulder strap for comfort and a water-resistant design that's built to last. The interior has mesh pockets and a detachable key clip to help keep your everyday essentials organized. Right now, you can shop it in four colors.

Is hard-side or soft-side luggage better?

Soft-side luggage is less susceptible to getting scratched up, according to Krulik. That said, one isn't really better than the other, it's more a matter of personal preference. Soft-side luggage also has tons of additional front and back pockets for storage, which is not common on hard-side luggage. If you're packing items that are fragile, a hard-side option is better, according to Krulik.

How can I efficiently pack my carry-on?

"One of the things that I think people don't realize is every time you make a fold in your clothes, it's adding bulk to what you're packing," says Krulik. Fold your shirts in half instead of threes, he adds. "Secondly, there's dead space inside those shoes that you're packing." Stuff them with travel shampoo bottles or anything else that fits says Krulik. Finally, if you have an expandable suitcase, make sure you avoid expanding it till the end of your trip. "If I go with a maximum bag that's stuffed to the limits, I have no place to put anything that I might want to buy on the trip."

Sunderland Women are in London today, for the final game of the Women’s Championship season at Crystal Palace, and after suffering a defeat to Charlton last time out, the Lasses are now out of the title race.

Mathematically, Charlton could still do it, but that would require a Palace loss at the minimum, and for the Addicks to beat Southampton 22-0, so it’s unlikely!

In her press conference, Mel Reay expressed pride at the team’s performances this year but also reflected on last Sunday’s match and the need for improvement.

The team is focused on keeping a clean sheet so that Claudia Moan, crowned ‘player of the season’ by the Sunderland Women’s Supporter’s Group, will win the Golden Glove award.

The reverse fixture against Palace in September ended in a 1-1 draw, with a Brianna Westrup goal in the ninetieth minute.

Mollie Rouse didn’t play for the Lasses against Charlton and may be a doubt for today’s fixture. Otherwise, a fully fit squad is expected to be available.

Palace’s Elise Hughes, the league’s top scorer, ruptured her ACL against Lewes and is unable to play against us.

Our hosts also have an unfortunate habit of dropping points against top sides this season, having lost to Charlton twice, Southampton once and drawn against ourselves. That said, they’ve won their last four games in impressive fashion, with eleven goals scored and only one conceded.

Should the Lasses win and Charlton lose or draw to Southampton, we’ll finish second in the table, and if Sunderland and Charlton both win, the Lasses will finish third.

Conversely, if Sunderland draw or lose and Charlton lose, we’ll finish fourth with Southampton taking third place.

Regardless of our final position, the team has performed magnificently and have established a strong foundation for future promotion. The continued success of the youth sides and the expectation of this summer’s transfer window mean that we can expect the team to grow in strength.

71-year-old fisherman who disappeared found tangled in barbed wire with dog by his side

A 71-year-old's dog proved to truly be man's best friend this week when his faithful companion remained by his side after he got tangled in barbed wire and stayed trapped for more than two days.

South Carolina resident Billy Wayne Kearse disappeared from his home on April 16 after heading out for a fishing trip with his chihuahua, Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller told USA TODAY Tuesday.

Kearse is from the city of Gaffney in upstate South Carolina about 50 miles southwest of Charlotte.

On Thursday about 11 a.m., the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office received a call from two friends saying they had been riding around searching for Kearse and found his fishing tackle box.

That same day, deputies responded to the area where the man's fishing gear was found and, after a search, discovered Kearse tangled in barbed wire with his dog nearby. 

"He got stuck trying to climb over the fence and got hung on the barbed wire as it wrapped around his ankle," Mueller explained.

After deputies freed him, Kearse was transported him by medical helicopter to a hospital to be treated for dehydration, officials reported.

"The dog would not come to the officers and ran away from them but was back at the home when officers arrived to notify the family we had located their loved one," Mueller said.

Sheriff: Missing man still hospitalized but expected to recover

Mueller said Kearse remained in the hospital on Tuesday but was improving daily and his prognosis for recovery "looks very good."

"We are grateful for the two citizens who were aware of the search efforts last night to locate the missing person and who continued checking their property this morning and notified us after locating the fishing tackle box," Mueller wrote in a news release. "Their efforts put us in the right location and subsequently officers were successful in locating him. Now we all pray for his recovery!"
