silver cross travel cot review

Designed in contemporary silver grey, the Silver Cross Dream Sleeper looks every inch the modern travel cot. It’s easy to use and includes a bassinette for newborns, making it a great cot for the price.

The Silver Cross Dream Sleeper boats a lightweight frame and comfortable fabrics designed to give baby a more peaceful night's sleep. The removable bassinette provides a raised sleep level for younger babies as well as doubling up as a changing surface. It is relatively simple to put up and down and is therefore equally as useful as a day-to-day playpen. The cot also has a matching carrying bag aimed at making it easier to transport.

What we love

This is a great-looking travel cot, in a cool unisex colour that’s subtle enough to fit with pretty much any décor. It’s very easy to use and not too heavy, a real plus when you’ve got lots of other stuff to pack. For newborns there’s a bassinette that raises the level of the mattress so you don’t have to lean down too far when laying him down to sleep; this also doubles as a handy changing area. The bassinette may not be used for long, but it’s a useful accessory while it lasts and its inclusion makes this a good-value travel cot. You can use it until your baby is about three months old. Without this, it’s also a handy playpen, for those days when you need to do things without having to check that your baby is exploring places you’d rather he didn’t.

Opening it up is simple, as the sides and end straighten in a flash and a push down on the base makes everything secure. The mattress can be secured to the base with the Velcro straps to ensure that your baby won’t be able to lift it up then pinch his fingers when it falls back down again. The mattress offers more padding than most travel cots, so a good night’s sleep should be on the cards and the protector is removable for easy cleaning.

Mesh windows on three sides mean you can see in and your baby can see out – their curvy shape is not mere decoration (though it looks great), but an attempt to give the optimum level of shade and visibility. One end has a zip-up pocket for storage, also in the same curvy shape. Folding the Dream Sleeper away is a fairly standard process: press the button in the centre of the sides and ends, pull the lever in the base (this is a little like opening a giant drinks can) and fold everything together so it can be enclosed by the mattress and stowed in the carry bag. Weighing in at just 7kg, it’s eminently portable, so will present no problems when being lifted in and out of the car and carried upstairs.

What to watch out for

The luxurious padding around the top of the buggy looks and feels great, but is liable to get dirty quickly and is not removable so a bit of a challenge to keep clean. Although light, it seems quite bulky when folded, and the pocket at the end is a triumph of style over function – its shape and size make it difficult to store many items.

Who is the Silver Cross Dream Sleeper best for?

Parents seeking classic style and ease of use at a good price will love this.

MadeForMums verdict

A contemporary travel cot to please the style aficionados, although it offers much the same features as other cots at this level. Good value as it includes the bassinette, but this is only worthwhile if you’re buying for a newborn.

Deborah Cicurel

The Voyager Co-Sleeper, by renowned British baby brand Silver Cross, is a great option for parents who want a portable, practical yet aesthetically pleasing bedside crib with lots of added extras for a reasonable price.

The crib has seven adjustable height positions, a handy storage shelf and an incline setting to help babies suffering with congestion, colic and reflux. It also has a really quick and easy compact fold and comes with an included travel bag, and lockable swivel wheels, to make it super-simple to transport with you for evenings or weekends away.

The Voyager Co-Sleeper was tested by Jo Adnitt, who is mum to Elara, 14 weeks. She was impressed by the look and feel of the Voyager, as well as its many features, and voted it the best bedside crib overall.

'Silver Cross is primarily known as a heritage British manufacturer of luxury prams and pushchairs, but they also have an extensive range of furniture and car seats,' she told us.   The Voyager Co-Sleeper is their bedside crib offering with the high-end finish that you expect of the brand at a price point that feels more competitive than some of the other well-known luxury co-sleepers.'

Silver Cross Voyager Co-Sleeper

Star rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Weighs: 11kg | Age: From birth

With a simple, unobtrusive structure and calming grey marl fabrics, the Silver Cross Voyager will slot seamlessly into any nursery or bedroom. It has mesh side panels to help airflow in and out of the crib, as well as allowing parents to see their little ones. It also has a useful storage shelf so you can grab essentials in the middle of the night.

Jo appreciated the sleek look of the crib and found the storage shelf very handy. 'The grey woven fabric and white mesh is thick and durable,' she explained. 'It's classic and sleek and is neutral enough to look good in most bedrooms. If space is an issue, the fact the crib doesn't have big feet that need to slot under the bed is a bonus - and yet it still pulls flush to the bedside. Underneath the bed, the flat mesh storage shelf is handy for keeping blankets, nappies, muslins, and so on.'

Jo found it very easy to assemble, taking it from the box to fully built in just 15 minutes. She found the portability of the crib a huge selling point. 'When it arrived, the crib was neatly packaged in a flat box ready to construct at home,' she says. 'The frame comes in three main parts that are easy to fold out, held together with a mesh shelf underneath.   Whilst a lot of co-sleepers claim to be portable, the Voyager was a simple case of clicking, zipping and locking pieces into place and I had it built within 15 minutes. Many co-sleepers claim to double as travel cots but most are so fiddly that parents just wouldn't bother.'

As a travel cot, our tester found the Silver Cross Voyager genuinely simple to construct and deconstruct. 'It folds easily in on itself and fits neatly in the waterproof travel bag,' adds Jo.

Comfort and features

The Voyager has an impressive list of features, including swivel wheels that help you rock baby to sleep, an incline setting, and a quick and easy fold with an included travel bag. Jo appreciated all its features and found it comfortable to use for both baby and parents. ' There are seven height settings allowing you to adjust the cot to most bed heights as well as tilting it on an incline which can help babies with reflux,' she says. 'Comfort is king for babies and the foam mattress is plush and luxurious, and thicker and softer than most other co-sleeper or travel cot mattresses.'

The wheels are also a useful extra feature - which Jo thinks reflects the quality of Silver Cross workmanship and design. 'As with Silver Cross prams, the Voyager wheels are incredibly sturdy, each with a locking footbrake and they're incredibly easy to steer,' she added. 'The fact the crib is on four wheels means that not only can you rock baby to sleep at night like a pram, but it is also really easy to push between rooms which is particularly handy if you live in a flat.'

Value for money

The Silver Cross Voyager isn’t the cheapest bedside crib you can buy, but Jo feels it reflects 'brilliant' value for money based on its functionality and how easy it is to use. 'The Voyager is especially fantastic value for money for any parent wanting a co-sleeper that doubles as a travel cot,' she says. 'It provides comfort, quality, and a sleek but simple-to-use design. The fact that it's on wheels and can help rock your baby to sleep at night is the icing on the cake.'

Our tester also felt that details such as the thickness of the mattress, and the fact that the crib has wheels, made it stand out from its similarly-priced rivals. ' As a premium co-sleeper, the Voyager holds its own against any of the other luxury rivals on the market,' she adds. 'The deep foam mattress is supportive but soft and the fabrics are durable yet stylish.   Although it doesn't have a built-in rocking mechanism, the smooth gliding wheels allow you to rock your baby to sleep - as well as they would in a classic Silver Cross pram.'

Is this lightweight and foldable cot the answer to your travel needs? Find out in T3's Micralite Sleep&Go Travel Cot review

Micralite Sleep&Go Travel Cot

The Micralite Sleep&Go Travel Cot is no doubt a quality product. It's versatile, easy to use, and durable enough to withstand everything travel can throw at it. I love how easy the folding mechanism is, how thick the mattress feels, and the ability to use it as a playpen. If you're looking for a highly-functional travel cot that will withstand many years of family trips – the Micralite Sleep&Go Travel Cot is an excellent choice.

Spencer Hart

The Sleep&Go Travel Cot is a well-designed piece of kit that hopes to make travelling with little ones a breeze. It sets itself apart from rivals by being adaptable: it's a travel cot one minute, playpen the next, and can even transform into a newborn co-sleeper. Perhaps best of all, it's able to transform between these functions in seconds thanks to its innovative all-in-one frame.

The Sleep&Go Travel Cot is created by Micralite, a sister brand of Silver Cross, that prides itself on putting functionality at its core. The brand's products are designed to go anywhere, with light and compact designs making them easy to use.

As an avid traveller, I couldn't wait to review Micralite's Sleep&Go Travel Cot, which folds up in seconds and comes with its own carry case.

With an RRP of £150, it sits firmly in the upper-mid-range price category, with durable materials and a solid build, but does it deserve a place in T3's best travel cot guide? Read on to find out…

Micralite Sleep&Go Travel Cot

Micralite Sleep&Go Travel Cot review: Setup

The Micralite Sleep&Go Travel Cot is, minus removing a few plastic bags, ready to use straight out of the box. Even as a relative newbie I was able to set the cot up in a matter of seconds.

This is mainly down to the all-in-one frame, which you simply remove from the zip-up travel bag, unfold lengthways, and then bring out the legs until you hear a satisfying click.

There is no screwing involved and no tent poles to connect – everything is already attached to the frame. I found that really useful, as it means you can't lose anything. Also, the last thing you want to be doing after a long day of travelling is read an instruction manual and figure out if you should be using a B1 bolt or B2. Thankfully the Sleep&Go is as idiot-proof as they come.

Things get a little more fiddly when it comes to the newborn insert, as this requires you to line up a zip and attach the mattress with four toggles. Even then, it doesn't take long, and you can have the whole thing put together in as little as two minutes.

The instructions are a series of images that are easy to follow, though, in practice, I doubt you'll need them.

Micralite Sleep&Go Travel Cot

Micralite Sleep&Go Travel Cot review: Design

As I stated at the beginning of this review, Micralite's designs are functional and durable – that can clearly be seen with the Sleep&Go Travel Cot.

The carry bag is very no-nonsense. It's made from a thick, black fabric that won't damage or mark. It's not the most luxe material out there, but it is clearly very durable.

The bag is big enough that getting everything back into it (the frame, newborn insert, and mattress) isn't a problem.

When folded the Sleep&Go measures 88 x 34 x 17cm, so it's not the most compact model on the market. Essentially you're trading absolute compactness for ease of use.

At 6.25kg, this travel cot isn't too heavy, although it's not the lightest model out there either. I found the large handles on the bag make it easy to carry, although I would appreciate some padding on the handles if I was carrying it for a long time.

Obviously, we've already touched on the main part of the design in the previous section – the quick and easy all-in-one folding frame.

Once unfolded the travel cot measures 112cm x 80cm x 67cm, which is a decent size and larger than many of its premium rivals. It's certified for overnight sleeping, so you can rest safe in the knowledge that your baby is safe.

The mattress is surprisingly thick at 3cm, although it does feel on the firm side.

It's covered in wipe-clean polyester, as is the frame around the top of the cot. This fabric feels thick and durable. It's worth noting, however, that the fabrics can't be machine washed, so you'll have to stick to spot cleaning.

I really like that one of the sides unzips. This turns it into useful storage if you're using the newborn insert or a playpen if you've got a toddler.

My main complaint about the design is that the Sleep&Go is only available in this graphite/black colourway. While this is practical, it would have been nice to see some brighter colour options here.

Micralite Sleep&Go Travel Cot

Micralite Sleep&Go Travel Cot review: Use

Okay, so if you've got this far then you know the Sleep&Go Travel Cot is easy to assemble, but what is it like to actually use?

I found the newborn insert the perfect height and size, making it easy to put a little one in (and lift them out again). It feels sturdy and features mesh panels so you can see your baby from the side if the cot is next to your bed.

As a travel cot, it's perfect.

I wouldn't really recommend it as a full-time co-sleeper though, as it doesn't feature a fold-down panel and the angled shape means it won't fit right up against a bed.

When it comes to folding the Sleep&Go down again, it's a little more tricky than putting it up, with some small buttons on each corner that collapse the legs. It takes a little bit of getting used to, but once you've done it a few times you'll be able to have the cot folded and in the bag within five minutes – which is very useful if you're rushing to the airport for your return flight.

Micralite Sleep&Go Travel Cot

Micralite Sleep&Go Travel Cot review: Verdict

The Micralite Sleep&Go Travel Cot is no doubt a quality product. It's versatile, easy to use, and durable enough to withstand everything travel can throw at it. I love how easy the folding mechanism is, and how thick the mattress feels. I also think the ability to use it as a playpen (or extra storage) is incredibly useful. I do wish it was available in brighter colours, and that it was a little easier to clean, but if you're looking for a highly-functional travel cot that will withstand many years of family trips – the Micralite Sleep&Go Travel Cot is an excellent choice.

Best travel cots 2023: Comfortable cribs for babies and toddlers

silver cross travel cot review

Travelling with your baby? Ensure everyone enjoys a good night’s sleep with the best travel cots

If you’ve recently had a baby, then the thrilling thought of travelling anywhere, let alone abroad, is precisely why you began your search for the best travel cot. Buy the right one, and you’ll be journeying once more, on UK holidays or overseas, visiting relatives overnight, or dropping off your baby to a friend while you and your partner enjoy a much-needed date night. For all those scenarios, a good-quality travel cot guarantees that your baby gets a comfortable night’s sleep.

Investing in a good-quality travel cot needn’t cost a fortune, however. How much you spend will depend on your requirements: do you need an all-singing, all-dancing cot; or a simple pop-up model that’s easy to use?

These days, many hotels and holiday homes supply cots; but buying your own means you can be confident in its quality, and your baby will be comfortable and relaxed in their own familiar cot, even when they’re in new surroundings.

You’ll find our top picks in the At a glance list below followed by a handy explanation of all the key features to look out for in our buying guide. If you want a little more information before buying, then you’ll find a wider selection of bite-size reviews a little further down the page.

How to choose the best travel cot for your child

There are some key questions to consider when buying a travel cot. Obviously, it needs to be appropriate for the age and size of your child, but you’ll also want to take note of how portable it is, how quickly it can be assembled – and how much you want to spend.

Are travel cots suitable for newborns?

Most travel cots will be just fine for newborn infants, but you may prefer to get a smaller bassinet that’s specifically designed for young babies. This is because it’s easier to put down a baby in a higher bassinet – babies develop what’s known as the Moro reflex, which causes their arms to jump if they think they’re being dropped; this could be felt if placing them lower down into a travel cot. In addition, a bassinet feels more enclosed and cosy.

You can also now pick up bedside cribs that can double up as travel cots. As you’d imagine, these will be more expensive, but it does mean you’re buying just one item rather than two.

Can a travel cot double as a playpen?

Indeed. Spending a little more on a travel cot that doubles as a playpen will increase its use, delivering value for money. Look for models that have four, rather than two, mesh sides to give you and your baby a better view. A travel cot can also function as somewhere safe to put your crawling, or walking, whirlwind while you grab a snack or go to the loo.

READ NEXT:  The best baby cot to buy

What else do I need to consider?

Make sure you have all the necessary accoutrements. All the travel cots on our list are supplied with a mattress, but sheets aren’t included. You could use a pillowcase, but you may prefer a fitted sheet, and this may be available as an optional extra.

How we test travel cots

At Expert Reviews, we know that not all products are created equal, nor can they be judged on price and brand alone. This is the reason we test every product we recommend, so we can get first-hand experience of how it performs in real life. To put together this roundup of the best travel cots, each model has been assembled by the reviews, and out through its paces with their own children. As well as considering the age and size of child for which each cot is suitable, we consider how portable it is, how quickly and easily it can be assembled, and how much it costs. We also judge the comfort of each mattress by considering how well a child has slept on them, along with the overall design. At the end of each review, you’ll find a quick-view set of details including the age range for which a cot is suitable, its weight, assembly time and cleaning instructions.

The best travel cots you can buy in 2023

1. bugaboo stardust: best travel cot for comfort and convenience.

silver cross travel cot review

Renowned, and highly regarded, for its range of car seats and stylish strollers (you can read more about these in our best pushchair guide ), Bugaboo recently branched out with its first travel cot: the Bugaboo Stardust. It’s pricey, just like the rest of the Bugaboo range, but that’s the only negative. It tops our list of the best travel cots because it combines style, function, and comfort in ways we haven’t seen before.

First – and this is a gamechanger – it “pops” open, in the same way that a pop-up tent would, and similarly folds down in seconds at the touch of a button. It can also be folded and unfolded without removing the mattress, and the buttons are sensibly and safely positioned out of reach of your child.

While many travel cots either come without a mattress or ship with a thin, uncomfortable bit of material, the Bugaboo Stardust comes with a built-in, multi-layered mattress that’s lightweight and comfortable. It can be raised via a zip-in bed insert, and this transforms the cot into a bassinet that’s perfect for newborns or younger babies.

The pop-up design means that there’s no fiddly assembly required. There are no special techniques to master, nor do you have to rely on separate sections all clipping and locking into place. It folds down into one piece that’s carried in a Velcro-closing bag that’s also included in the box.

Factor in all of its features, and the included extras, and the £225 price doesn’t seem quite so extortionate. In fact, we don’t think you can really put a price on just how easy and quick the Stardust is to use.

Key features – Age range: 0-24 months; Weight: 6.7kg; Cleaning: Hand-washable fabric; Time to assemble: 1 second

2. Silver Cross Slumber: Best lightweight travel cot

Price when reviewed: £165 | Check price at Silver Cross

best travel cot - silver slumber cot

Silver Cross’s Slumber travel cot is contemporary and lightweight, with a pop-up design that can be assembled in seconds. It now comes with the newborn insert that sits at bed height and can be used with or without. This cot looks great, so we had no issue having it out in our living room for downstairs naps through a period of some noisy building work being carried out. Plus, it also doubles up as a great playpen, featuring a padded top rail and zip-down side.

Let’s be honest, babies don’t always sleep particularly well in travel cots, but we were pleasantly surprised during testing, as baby enjoyed a restful couple of nights on a recent trip to the grandparents. The Silver Cross Slumber is lightweight, too, so would be ideal for taking on holiday to create somewhere safe for baby to play in a villa or hotel room.

Key features – Age: 0-3 years; Weight: 7.7kg; Cleaning: Sponge clean; Time to assemble: 5 minutes

3. Tutti Bambini CoZee: Best travel cot for style

silver cross travel cot review

The Cozee Luxe is the latest update on Tutti Bambini’s Cozee bedside crib . Slightly bigger, it comes with more premium finishings than the original. It’s beautifully made, featuring soft quilted sides, a cotton lining, and sheer mesh sides that will keep baby visible at all times. It also has gold-tone-tipped walnut legs that add to its luxury finish.

The side can be easily zipped down so you can lift baby in and out of the bed for feeds during the night, or zipped up during nap times. The lining can also be removed and washed in the machine, which is always handy with a newborn baby.

Assembly proved quick and easy: it probably took us no more time than the 60 seconds suggested by the brand. This feels like a quality cot that we would be more than happy to have as a permanent by-the-side bed; it doesn’t feel at all flimsy in the way some travel cots do. If your baby regularly stay at the grandparents or a friend’s house, this would be a lovely option to keep out permanently.

Key features  – Age range: 0-6 months; Weight: 11.4kg; Cleaning: Inner lining and mattress cover are machine washable; Time to assemble: 60 seconds

4. nuna sena aire: best travel cot/playpen hybrid.

best travel cot Nuna Sena Aire

Nuna’s solution is more expensive and heavier, but comes with plenty of great features and more spacious dimensions of 103 x 76 x 73cm (LWH) – which means there’s more room to sleep and play.

The zigzag leg-folding design is super easy to use; folding it up is particularly satisfying, requiring a simple lifting of the strap in the centre of the cot. Like magic, it folds up into a very compact size, although you do have to wrap the mattress around the outside before putting it all in the carry bag.

The stylish cot is available in two colours, Charcoal (pictured) or Frost, and features an “Advanced air design”, including mesh sides to ensure airflow is optimal and safe. It’s sturdier than most, with skid-proof feet and padded edges.

Suitable from birth, the raised bassinet mode is super useful and can be quickly unzipped when you want to move the mattress to a lower position. The mattress itself sports a triple-layered mesh design and the internal boards are removable, so that the cover can be machine-washed and dried.

Key details – Age range: Birth to 15kg; Weight: 12.3kg; Cleaning: Spot-clean, air-dry mattress cover is both washing machine and dryer safe; Time to assemble: 1 second fold/unfold

5. Joie Excursion: Best travel cot for value for money

silver cross travel cot review

It isn’t the most compact, lightweight or easy to put together model in this list, but the Joie Excursion Change & Bounce gets a special shout-out for offering great value for money. In addition to the sturdy, well-built travel cot itself, this good-looking setup comes with a full-size bassinet (that clips on and off easily), a changing table and a bouncer, all included in the price. What’s more, the bouncer can be used either on top of the cot or standalone, as can the changing mat.

As with all of Joie’s baby products, the Excursion Change & Bounce is highly practical. Although a little fiddly to set up and use, once you’ve mastered it, you’ll wonder how you ever did without the added extras. The travel cot itself sports an ultra-secure frame with exposed tubing, plus two built-in wheels to help you easily move it around a room. A mesh lining on all four sides means the Change & Bounce can double up as a playpen, plus it has an elevated, draught-resistant base, and comes with a carry bag for storage.

On the side of the cot is a sound and light attachment that vibrates. It plays five classical lullabies and five nature sounds, plus there’s a nightlight that offers three brightness settings. The bouncer adds a toy bar with two soft toys and a five-point harness. We’ve found ourselves using the BabyBjörn for the odd night away and this fantastic travel cot for longer holidays.

Key features –   Age range: 0-4 years; Weight: 16.49kg; Cleaning: Hand-washable fabric; Time to assemble: 5 minutes

6. BabyBjörn Travel Cot: Best luxury travel cot

best travel cot babybjorn light

BabyBjörn gear isn’t cheap, and the fitted organic sheet adds an extra £20 to this already pricey travel cot. But if you’re willing to pay, it won’t disappoint. The travel cot takes mere seconds to assemble: the legs drop and lock as you open it, after which the mattress drops in.

The mattress is thick and soft, it’s fully washable and it looks good, too. Available in two colours, the mesh sides ensure good ventilation for baby and all-round visibility for parents. We bought this travel cot on the premise that once our little one started roaming around, it would make a safe playpen for him, too. The angle of the legs deliver good stability, even if your toddler leans on the travel cot’s sides as he grows.

One slight downside is the length of the drop when placing your baby into the cot at bedtime. It isn’t a huge problem, but note that this travel cot doesn’t come with a bassinet attachment – so, if you’re short, placing a 10kg child down into it can prove tricky. This isn’t a reason not to buy this travel cot, just something to consider.

Key features – Age: 0-3 years; Weight: 6kg; Cleaning: Machine-washable fabric; Time to assemble: 15 seconds

Check price at BabyBjörn

7. Red Kite Sleeptight Travel Cot: Best budget travel cot

silver cross travel cot review

This may not be the lightest or most attractive travel cot here, but it does the job for a fraction of the cost of other models. It does come with its own mattress, although some parents may prefer to buy an additional mattress (around £20) since the one included is quite thin. Setting the cot up and packing it away again can be a bit of a challenge – make sure you follow the instructions carefully – but the sturdy, steel-framed design is reassuringly stable once erected.

There are no bells and whistles here; just the cot, a mattress and a bag. You’ll need to pick up a sheet for the mattress, too, which is available to buy for around £13. If you’re not someone who will be travelling too often with baby, or are on a tight budget, this cot will serve its purpose.

Key features – Age: 0-3 years; Weight: 8.5kg; Cleaning: Sponge clean; Time to assemble: 1 minute

This score is made up of a combination of performance (70%) and ease of use (30%). Our observations are based on the latest voluntary Australian standard AS/NZS 2195:2010. Recommended portacots pass all safety requirements such as suffocation risks. Lower-scoring models (in the 60–69% range) are worth considering if they meet all key safety requirements. They may fail some minor points such as finger entrapment hazards.

Based on tests to the latest Australian standard for portable cots, AS/NZS 2195:2010, which goes above mandatory requirements. Supplied accessories such as bassinets and change tables are also assessed and factored into the score. The lower the score, the more significant the safety failures we found. Check the 'Bad points' for each portacot in our comparison table for details of any failures and manufacturer responses.

We assess how easy the portable cots are to set up, pack away and store.

Whether the portacot passed the most important safety tests of the voluntary Australian Standard, AS/NZS 2195:2010, which goes above mandatory requirements. Tests include having breathable mesh on all sides, and no suffocation or strangulation hazards. Some models that pass key tests still have some minor failures and therefore aren't fully recommended, but are still worth considering.

The cot's dimensions when folded up and in its carry bag (if applicable).

A pocket on the cot end for storing small items.

Wheels or castors make the cot easier to move, though some are light enough to move short distances without them.

Most models with wheels have lockable brakes on them. If not, they might instead have two non-wheeled legs which help stop the cot sliding about.

A mesh cover to keep insects away from your baby.

The base can be set to a higher position, suitable for a sleeping infant up to about six months of age.

It didn’t take long for Silver Cross to join the brands offering co-sleepers. And as the bedside crib seems to be phasing out the Moses basket, or certainly becoming a strong contender, most well-known baby brands have something to offer in this department.

The voyager co-sleeper sits in Silver Cross’s new division of products, the essentials collection, which is currently a small offering with the buffet high chair and an essentials textiles collection, which includes a hooded towel, wash cloths and cot bed sheets.

Perhaps best known for its regal heritage hand-crafted coach prams, the Balmoral and the Kensington, in the past few years, Silver Cross has broadened its offering, adding car seats and babywear. The essentials collection feels rather a departure for the brand that offers heritage prams. It has a reputation that spans more than 140 years in the nursery business and has a longstanding royal following alongside praise from many celebrities.

But while we know Silver Cross impresses in the pushchair department, (the Silver Cross wave beat the iCandy peach in our head to head), does the voyager co-sleeper live up to the same quality? We, plus our 14-week-old helper, put the voyager through its paces to see if it's worth the £200 price tag.

Silver Cross voyager co-sleeper

Silver Cross .jpg

Buy now £199, Silvercrossbaby.com

Dimensions : L 101cm x W 61cm x H 67-84.5cm

Weight: 11kg

Usage: Suitable from birth to 9kg (approximately six months)

From taking the voyager co-sleeper out of the box to it being ready for a baby took 16 minutes, and that included putting on one of its cot bed sheets ( £19.99, Silvercrossbaby.com ) on the mattress. It's really a case of clicking bits in place, attaching the wheels, and zipping the cot fabrics into the frame. Our only slight niggle was with zipping up the front of the cot, as there are two zips, one each side, to allow the front to drop down. Zipping up the first side is fine, but as the fabric tightens it means the other side will require a bit of brute force.

Assembled, this product weighs 11kg, which makes it feel sturdy enough to be a safe space for baby to sleep, yet not too hefty to move. But parents' backs will be grateful for the four swivel wheels, which allow you to move it about with ease. They're of course lockable (simply push down the lock with your feet).

As with any drop-down side, it takes a few goes before it becomes effortless. Our biggest gripe is the aforementioned stiff zip, as unclipping the front rail is simple and intuitive. The Velcro tabs at the bottom of the cot ensure the folded-down side doesn't flap around and keeps things looking tidy. Once you've got the hang of it, being able to feed baby without leaving the bed is a true godsend.

There are seven adjustable height positions. While some options on the market have more settings than this, they're not really necessary, as this covers the majority of differing bed heights. For safety reasons, you'll need to align at least 1cm below your mattress, and you can easily work through the seven height adjustments by pushing in the buttons on the inside of the frame.

These don't have to be pressed simultaneously, which is useful if you don't have the arm span to do so. This also means you can use the height adjustments to create an incline, which is thought to help babies suffering with congestion and reflux.

We were also impressed with how this co-sleeper attaches to the bed, as there are discreet holes in the bottom of the crib unit, and you can loop it around the bed frame. This includes divan beds, which isn't possible for all co-sleepers.

The voyager only has a useful life of around six months. Although this is standard for most co-sleepers, there are some brands that have an extra few months usage, but that would impact the product's portability which, in our opinion, is more useful.

As you'd expect with a name like voyager, this product isn't expected to stand still, and the quick and easy compact folding is probably its most standout feature. While many co-sleepers are designed to be travel-friendly, including travel bags and claiming easy fold etc, the Voyager really is a doddle to fold away and then quickly spring back into action again.

Read more: 13 best cot beds that are a long-term sleep solution

You only need to remove the storage shelf and then it folds down on itself. In contrast, many similar products require removal of the legs, unzipping and taking many pieces apart. The voyager is not dissimilar to the build of a portable massage table and that's seriously impressive: the convenience means parents have their travel cot (until baby's six months old) sorted, too. Of course, nobody wants to sign up for carrying 11kg of product, even if the included travel bag is well designed, but for taking in and out of the car and carrying short distances, this is a great option.

It's not an easy task to get a practical product that is fit for purpose and attractive too. As a brand, Silver Cross famously produces easy-on-the-eye kit, and while we don't think this is the most attractive co-sleeper on the market, it's no eye sore. The plush marl grey fabrics are unlikely to clash with any decor, are nicely padded and also wonderfully neutral, making it a strong unisex option. It's also easy to keep up appearances as you can unzip the cot fabrics and wash at 30C.

The frame complements the fabrics in a darker metal, and there's a Silver Cross badge on either side. It's nice to have the option of a shelf to place easy-to-reach essentials like nappies, muslins and blankets, but as this is exposed it can soon look cluttered, so a built-in basket would be our preference.

The deep foam mattress is one of the best we've seen for a co-sleeper. It's firm but feels supportive, and our 14-week-old tester hasn't shown any aversion to it. The mesh panels on both sides of the crib maximise the air flow available, which is important as babies can't regulate their own temperature like adults can. The mattress is 84cm long by 51.5cm wide, so baby has plenty of kicking space, too.

The verdict: Silver Cross voyager co-sleeper

Parents who are likely to travel a lot during baby's first six months should seriously consider Silver Cross' voyager as it's a co-sleeper and travel cot in one. Many products that try to brand themselves as “portable” fall short in other departments, but the voyager is a solid all-rounder, as well as being super travel friendly.

For just shy of £200, parents essentially have a safe, comfortable and convenient sleeping space for baby whether at home or away, and that makes it well worth its price tag. It's not as beautiful as some of the wooden options on the market, but if you're expecting to be a family on the move with a young baby in tow, you'll want this by your side.

Customer reviews.

Super easy to use, including the pack up. It’s also lightweight and portable. Not big and bulky.

So easy to set up and pack down. Love that it has the bassinet part and you just use a normal size bassinet protector and sheet. Our daughter settled and slept so well in travel cot.

I bought this cot due to it being the safest cot as rated by choice and not only is it safe but it’s stylish and so easy to put together and pack back up!

Needs to fold up into a shorter pack - for travel

Great travel cot, sturdy, super easy to set up! My only fault is that the matress lies on the floor so when setting up on wooden or lino floors, it might get a bit more drafty/cold, but i suppose thats also the benefit of the cot doubling as a play pen. :)

Love love love it and now I have one at our home little G.Baby can sleep over anytime

Super easy to put together and bub slept like a dream the whole time we were away.

Silver Cross Westport Cot Bed review

silver-cross-westport-cot-bed

A comfortable bed for your baby and toddler is extremely important for helping them to sleep soundly through the night, but it's also important that they are safe when they're sleeping too, which is where the Silver Cross Westport Cot Bed ticks all the boxes. Not only does it look beautiful in a nursery, but it is designed to make sure that your baby is safe and comfortable when they sleep too.

With three heights to set your little ones bed, as well as the option to convert it into a toddler bed, the Silver Cross Westport grows with your child, looks stylish and is safe and sturdy.

I tested the cot bed with my 17 month old daughter, and also used the Silver Cross True Fit toddler mattress . This review will be updated once the toddler-bed has been tested.

1. Silver Cross Westport Cot Bed

Westport-Cot-Bed

www.silvercrossbaby.com

  • Grows with your baby
  • Easy to build
  • Heavy to move

Key features

Solid oak feet and finishes: the cot beds feet stick out at a slight angle for a more contemporary look to other cot beds, but it also makes the bed feel more secure. Whilst they also look small compared to the size of the bed, they are extremely sturdy and when my daughter bounced in the bed it didn't move.

The solid oak frame also adds a scandi-design to it and makes it look and feel more sturdy than all-white cot beds.

Three base heights: suitable for newborns until the age of at least four, the Westport cot bed has an adjustable height setting. With three slots in the headboard and baseboard, the base of the bed can be unscrewed and move up and down to the appropriate height, and then screwed back in.

As my daughter can stand up, we tested the cot bed on its lowest height setting and the top of the bed comes just below her shoulders. In her last cot bed on the lowest setting, she could easily tilt herself over the side of the bed, whereas in this one she can't.

silver cross travel cot review

Converts to toddler bed: the Westport Cot Bed comes with a smaller head board and base board, so that when your little one is ready to move into their big, you can remove the sides and ends to make it look a more stylish toddler bed. This is one feature that sets it apart from other cot beds, as often the ends remain higher and the bed feels more enclosed, and doesn't look as good.

Testing the Silver Cross Westport Cot Bed

Performance.

One thing that has always worried me about cot beds and when my children can stand is them climbing out. With her last cot, my daughter figured out pretty early on that if she leaned over the side enough, she could climb out and that is exactly what she has done for a few months when she's woken from a nap.

That can be pretty scary as a parent and we've had to move quicker than her when she wakes up so that she's safe, however with the West Port Cot Bed, we haven't had any issues with her trying to climb out. The sides of the cot are high enough that they come up to her armpits, not her waist, so when she leans on the side she isn't at risk of falling out.

The height can be a little bit restrictive while on the lowest setting and laying her down when she's asleep and I have to lean over a little bit more than the previous cot we had, but it's an incredibly small problem compared to knowing my daughter is extremely safe in her bed even when she's awake.

It lives up to every expectation of a cot bed. It didn't move when attempting to wobble and the sides wouldn't rattle when my daughter would hold onto them in a morning. She could sleep comfortably on a mattress that fit the cot bed, rather than having gaps down the side.

silver cross travel cot review

Using the bed itself, once my partner helped me to move it, we found that it did everything that a cot bed should. It provided a safe sleeping space for our daughter, with high sides to help prevent her being able to climb out.

When my daughter does shuffle around the cot, I've noticed that it doesn't move with her whereas our last one would rock slightly and occasionally knock against the wall. I think this reinforces the fact that the bed is extremely sturdy and I wasn't worried that the screws would loosen and make the support of them bed weak.

The base of the cot bed is really supportive too, and I have sat inside the cot to test it's strength and it didn't creak or give any impression that I was testing the limit of the cot bed even when climbing in and out. It also felt supportive for myself.

The Westport Cot Bed was easy to build, with clear instructions to follow.

I found when building the cot bed everything slotted together perfectly, making the process a lot quicker. The sides were also easy to attach, however connecting the last side to the rest of the bed is definitely a two person job, as the cot bed is heavy.

I timed myself to see how long it would take to build the cot bed, and it took 45 minutes to build it up until the last step of connecting the side, which took an extra 30 minutes by myself. This would definitely have been quicker with someone helping me.

The bed itself is also really heavy once built, and I wouldn't recommend attempting to move, or help to move it when pregnant.

silver cross travel cot review

Final Verdict

Overall, I think the Silver Cross Westport is a great choice for a cot bed. In terms of design, the bed itself is extremely is eye catching and would suit most nursery styles. I love that even with the bold solid oak features, the bed has a lovely scandi-design to it.

As mentioned previously, I wouldn't build the bed by myself again and would wait for my partner to help put it together, or at least get help for the final steps when the bed is heavier.

If I'm being extremely critical, while I love the height of the bed for my daughter too, it could be a struggle for people laying their baby down. I am 5ft 7 and have to stretch a little bit to lean over the sides, so some people might need a little stool to support them with laying their baby down. However, I would definitely prefer the height knowing that my daughter is safe!

The Silver Cross Westport Cot Bed is gorgeous and sturdy and I believe is the perfect bed for my daughter and personal style preference. I think it will be really hard to find another bed that I genuinely love as much.

What mattress do I need?

As the cot bed dimensions at 140 X 70cm, you will need a baby or toddler mattress of the same size to fit the bed. Along with the Westport Cot Bed, I tested the TrueFit Superior Mattress.

2. TrueFit Superior Mattress

true-fit-superior-mattress

Description

The TrueFit Superior mattress is designed to fit perfectly in the cot bed, ensuring that no gaps are left at the edges. It's dual-sided, making it perfect for babies and potty-training toddlers.

  • Comfortable
  • Distributes weight evenly
  • Breathable and hypo-allergenic
  • TrueFit design
  • Removable washable cover

The mattress itself felt really firm when it arrived, however my daughter finds it extremely comfortable and I've also noticed that she fidgets a lot less in her sleep. It fits really snug into the cot, with no gaps around the edges which makes me feel reassured that she's safe when sleeping and if she does wriggle around.

When should you adjust the cot height?

Your cot will remain on the highest setting up until when your baby starts to roll , which typically happens from the earliest of four months, up to six months old.

Then once they start pushing themselves onto their hands and knees and trying to hold onto the side, you would lower the bed to its lowest setting.

Frequently asked questions

Our frequently asked questions

Do you make a buggy board for the Coast?

Yes. The Coast Ride-On Board connects easily to your pushchair with no extra fixings required. It also has a handy strap which attaches to the basket, so the board can be stored neatly when not in use.

When should I move my baby from the carrycot to the seat unit?

We would suggest the seat unit is used from 6 months onwards. However, we're aware children grow at different rates and use of the seat unit pre 6 months would be down to parental discretion. We would always advise that the carrycot be used for as long as possible.

What is the height of the seat?

The height of the seat on Coast is 58.5cm

Is there a compatible parasol?

Yes. Coast is compatible with our Universal Travel System Parasol. It clicks on and off with a simple push button mechanism, and the flexible design allows you to move it into any position.

Is Coast a Tandem Pram?

No. Coast is only available as a single pram and cannot be used with a second seat unit.

Ticket prices for the Trans-Siberian Railway also depend on the current ruble exchange rate.

Is the Trans-Siberian Railway expensive?

Before starting on your Trans-Siberian Railway adventure you naturally want to know what the entire trip will cost. Although this sounds like a simple question, it is pretty difficult to answer. The Trans-Siberian Railway price of travel depends on the following factors:

  • Which travel class do I want to use? The price for a first class ticket is about three times the price of a 3rd class ticket
  • Am I willing to buy the tickets myself and assume responsibility for the organisation of the trip?
  • How many stopovers do I want to make? The more breaks, the higher the total price.
  • What sort of accommodation do I want? Will it be a luxury hotel or will a hostel dormitory be sufficient?
  • What tours and excursions would I like to go on?
  • What is the current exchange rate for rubles?

Basically, everything from a luxury to a budget holiday is available. If you buy yourself a 3rd Class nonstop ticket at the counter, a few hundred Euros will cover the price. All you will experience is a week on the Trans-Siberian train and will see nothing of the cities on the way. There is, however, any amount of room for upward expansion. Everyone makes different choices about which aspects they are willing to spend money on. I personally prefer to save money on accommodation and railcar class, visit as many cities and do as many trips as possible. To enable better classification of your travel expenses I have contrasted two typical traveler types. In the third column you can calculate the total cost of your own journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that these are only rough estimations and not exact prices.

The all-in costs seem fairly high at first. However, they cover everything and it is quite a long journey taking four weeks. Many people forget to consider that when looking at the list. We should also deduct the running costs for food and leisure at home. I think most visitors to this page will classify themselves somewhere between the two categories, that is around the € 2,000 – € 2,500 range. When comparing these prices with other travel packages, you get the impression that it is hardly worthwhile travelling individually on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that most packages last no more than 14 days and you are herded like cattle through the most beautiful locations.

If you spend less time on the Trans-Siberian Railway you will, of course, pay less. I chose this particular travel length because I prefer not to do things by halves. If you fulfill your dream of travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway, enjoy it and don’t rush things. But it’s up to you, of course. Try playing around with the form a bit to find the appropriate price for your trip.
