Description

Ubaye  is a region definitely worth of a visit in the French Alps. Located between Mercantour, Queyras and Val Maïra, this site will provide the ground for great adventures!

It's in fact a wild region, and the landscapes are breathtaking. The  Chambeyron  is the main massif, with beautiful rocks and large slopes. But the terrain is much more varied than that!

A unique stay far from the crowded ski resorts, but with a warm welcome and delicious food. Indeed, ski touring in Ubaye means loving adventures. You will often feel like you are one of the first people to explore this land. Besides, the region is quite sunny, making our days even more enjoyable.

I have already planned some trips that you will find below. But if you want, I can also organize the trip in a different date.

Ubaye valley - Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence

Nestled between Provence and Mercantour, the Ubaye valley, whose chief town is the welcoming Barcelonnette , is a popular destination for outdoor activities. Wild and unspoiled, this area of glacial origin, dominated by mountains of over 3,000 metres, is a delight for fans of hiking, skiing and canoeing. In the Upper Ubaye area, nature lovers absolutely must make the wonderful hike to the beautiful Neufs Couleurs lake situated 2,841 metres above sea level.

The Ubaye valley will also delight fans of heritage buildings, with the beautiful Romanesque church of Saint-Paul-sur-Ubaye , the impressive little Châtelet bridge suspended over narrow gorges, the hilltop fort of Tournoux and Abriès mill in Jausiers .

In a nutshell

Never heard of the Ubaye valley ? Don't worry,  it’s a well kept secret, and as we’re kind, we’ll let you tag along. A largely unspoilt region with views that’ll take your breath away, this area is located between the Mercantour, the Queyras and the Val Maïra. The icing on the cake is the Chambeyron mountain range with an array of colours of rugged terrain mixing dolomitic and quartzite rock.

Far away from the hustle and bustle of any ski station, the Ubaye valley marches at its own beat in the Alps of upper Provence. Snowfalls coming from the East are often very generous. You'll get a warm welcome, accomodation is comfortable and food is good. Skiing in the Ubaye valley is for those who love adventure, choose one specific itinerary rather than another one at the last minute, and definitely for those who like being spoilt. Once you’ve climbed skied one mountain you’ll want to ski as far as the eye can see. You'll most definitely have the impression you're the first to have siked here. Are you in for it ? Then follow us !

Friends, family or just colleagues at work ?

You wish to customize one of our trips, among friends and at your own convenience ? No problem, contact us so we can adapt a trip to suit you, right down to the last detail ! Our trips are tailor-made so giving you what you want is as easy as 123.

Equipment - clothing & gear

Make sure to wear bright colours, it's good for the soul and gives photos a funky edge !

Skiing material (all in excellent condition)

  • Ski touring skis with appropriate bindings. We recommend freeride type skis so you can enjoy skiing powdery descents and skiing on all types of snow
  • Ski crampons (i.e. "couteaux")
  • Ski touring boots
  • Avalanche kit: transceiver, shovel and probe (please let us know if you have your own, if not we lend them for free)
  • 35 litre backpack

Security advice: avalanche airbag backpacks are highly recommended .

They help to stay on the surface in case of avalanche and minimize the risk of burial. Our guides use them and we highly recommend you to opt for high quality and reliable gear. If you don't have an avalanche airbag we rent them out at a very competitive price.

If you don't have the adequate equipment for the trip, don’t worry and travel light: we rent out the required gear and hand it over at the start of the trip ! Our equipment is relatively new, if not brand new, of good quality and adapted to your choice of activity.

Prices of rental equipment during the entire trip (these competitive prices only take into account the number of days of the trip):

You can choose to rent equipment when booking your trip, or lateron by clicking on “my account”. If any of the equipment that you’ve chosen is out of stock you’ll be notified and reimbursed.

This list of clothes is designed to give you an idea of clothes it may be a good to have with you. By no means do you need to have the latest brands or the latest gear, but if you need to renew your wardrobe, this guide would be a good start.

  • Warm hat or buff/scarf
  • Ski goggles (2 pairs) and sunglasses: UV factory 4 protective lenses. Photochromic glasses adapt to light intensity and are very useful
  • Helmet (strongly recommended)
  • Under layer: breathable long sleeved tops to maintain heat. A tip: merino wool is breathable and has anti-bacterial properties and is therefore less likely to smell as opposed to synthetic fabrics. Take this into consideration if you need to update your wardrobe.
  • Middle layer: a light polar or synthetic jacket for an extra layer of heat during breaks
  • Outer layer: a Gore-tex or similar type of jacket with a breathable waterproof membrane. Make sure it's lightweight and compact so it doesn't take up too much space in your backpack
  • Bottom layer: trousers with a breathable waterproof membrane (Gore Tex or similar) with long side zips allowing air to flow, recommended on climbs
  • Hands: light fleece or soft shell gloves, a pair of silk glove liners to go underneath, warm gloves with a breathable and waterproof membrane. Mittens are always a good idea for really cold days of for those of you who feel the cold
  • Swimming gear: it takes up such little space, it would be a shame not to bring it just in case. Avoid swimming shorts or bermudas, they are not usually allowed.
  • Ski socks: merino wool socks are breathable and have anti-bacterial properties and are less likely to smell as opposed to those made of synthetic fabrics. Think about them if you need to stock up.
  • Slippers / Crocs recommended for evening wear.

  • Check that you have the right equipment
  • Take spare batteries and a charger for your electronic devices (camera, video recorder, tracking devices etc)
  • Bring some cash and your credit card
  • Leave in a good frame of mind: we're going to have a great time even if we happen to not make it to the summit !
  • Before leaving: water the plants, empty the rubbish bin, turn off water and gas, and tell your partner that you're going to have a good time (please not by text message), that you've well deserved... If you don't follow the latter recommendation, you'll most probably kick yourself when you get back !

The Ubaye valley is located in the heart of the Southern Alps. The region is influenced by the Alps and the Mediterranean. The Ubaye valley offers idyllic landscapes: ancient churches, hamlets, fields, forests, snowy summits.

An exceptional natural space

To the north of the Mercantour National Natural Park , the Ubaye Valley is a natural area of great beauty and is home to a wide variety of wildlife. Chamois, ibexes and mouflons frolic in the steep mountain reliefs, while wild boars prefer wooded areas. In the mountain pastures, as danger approaches, marmots whistle before reaching their burrows. Wolves, who came from Italy, have regained possession of their former territories and have settled in the Ubaye valley. If you are lucky enough, you might observe one of them.

Many birds of prey can be observed in the sky such as the golden eagle or the bearded vulture . The particular climatic and geological influences of the Ubaye valley have enabled the development of an exceptional flora. In the Lauzanier valley, for example, the Eryngium blooms. It is an endemic species that has been saved from extinction at the very last moment.

The high valley of the Ubaye is partly located in the Mercantour National Natural Park, in the towns of Jausiers, Meyronnes or Larche. The fauna and flora are protected.

Numerous hiking trails

The Ubaye’s sunny climate and sumptuous landscapes attract walking enthusiasts every year. The marked trails offer numerous itineraries accessible to all: easy walks for families or more difficult day or multi-day hikes for seasoned hikers.

You can hike to the summits or to many different lakes such as the Lac des Sagnes in Jausiers, the Lac Noir in Lauzet Ubaye, the Eaux Tortes of the Vallon du Laverq in Méolans Revel. The most experienced can reach the Brec de Chambeyron, which peaks at an altitude of 3,389 meters and requires the use of a rope for rappelling.

You can buy a hiking guide or the IGN 3540OT map to discover the main marked hiking trails and itineraries around Barcelonnette and in the Ubaye valley.

Nature and outdoor activities

Hiking is not the only outdoor activity that can be enjoyed in the Ubaye valley.

When it gets sunny, cycling enthusiasts will discover the roads and passes of the Southern Alps. Peaking at 1,911 meters, the Larche pass can be ascended rather easily from Les Gleizolles with a difference in altitude of 682 meters for an average slope of 4,24%. From Les Gleizolles, cyclists can also get to the Col de Vars, which peaks at 2108 meters. A difference in altitude of 798 meters for an average slope of 5,66% requires the cyclists to have trained. The most experienced sportsmen and women can ride to the Bonette-Restefond pass, which culminates at 2,802 meters. It is the highest road pass in France and has been ridden by Tour de France champions. From Jausiers, the cyclists face a 1,589-meter difference in altitude, for an average slope of 6,62%.

Mountain biking is also very popular. In summer, several mountain resorts offer packages that allow you to take the ski lifts with your bike, for a sporty descent rich in thrills.

Saint-Vincent-les-Forts benefits from a particular aerology, which makes it THE spot to go paragliding in France and in Europe. Experience there a first flight in a tandem paraglider, with a qualified instructor. Alpine cliffs also attract climbing enthusiasts who have the choice between climbing routes or via ferrata.

Each year, whitewater sports attract a growing number of tourists who are looking for thrill and new challenges. You can practice canyoning, rafting or canoeing. You can also go swimming or practice many water activities at the Serre-Ponçon lake such as boat or stand-up paddle, towed buoy or jet-ski session.

Barcelonnette: Mexico in Ubaye

“Capital” of the Ubaye valley, Barcelonnette has a remarkable architectural heritage that testifies to its astonishing history. In the past centuries, many people left the valley for the “New World” and more precisely Mexico. When they got rich, they returned to the country where they built sumptuous Mexican-style villas .

Barcelonnette is the epicenter of the whole valley. The squares and streets are full of stores and a market takes place on Wednesday and Saturday. Every year, music is in the spotlight with the Jazz Festival in July and the Latin-Mexican festivities in August.

Located at 1,130 meters above sea level, Barcelonnette is surrounded by spectacular peaks. On the slopes, one can observe different types of alpine vegetation: cultivated fields at the bottom of the valley, forests, mountain pastures and rocky chaos at high altitude.

  • Tourism in Barcelonnette

A remarkable architectural heritage

The Mexican villas are not the only architectural treasures of the valley. Discover the mountain heritage of the hamlets and villages, home to churches and chapels with sober and elegant lines, wash houses, fountains and sundials.

On the border between France and Italy, the Ubaye has long been a disputed territory that needed to be protected. Numerous fortifications were built all along the valley. The fort of Tournoux, located in the communes of Condamine-Châtelard and Saint-Paul-sur-Ubaye, is made of several remarkable works spread over 700 meters of difference in height. This tourist attraction is one of the best examples of the fortresses built in the Southern Alps in the XIXth century.

Five museums and ecomuseums are scattered throughout the Ubaye valley and allow you to meet the women and men who have lived there for centuries and have made this territory a unique and welcoming place.

Ski resorts and winter sports

The Ubaye valley is also home to several ski resorts. Snow and winter sport enthusiasts can choose between:

  • Pra Loup , one of the most famous ski resorts in the region. The “Espace Lumière” ski area offers 180 kilometers of slopes.
  • Le Sauze : 65 kilometers of slopes.
  • Sainte-Anne : 35 kilometers of slopes.
  • The small family resort of Val d’Oronaye – Larche is ideal for families.

You can also enjoy cross-country skiing or snowshoeing on the numerous marked itineraries. The Ubaye is also a perfect playground for ski touring or ice climbing.

Couple summit skiing

Alpine ski touring

What does an alpine ski tour involve.

A alpine ski tour, or “radonnée,” involves ascending a mountain with the help of skis or a splitboard. Using climbing skins attached to the skis, you can walk uphill without the risk of sliding backwards. When you finally reach the summit of the mountain, you remove the climbing skins, leaving you with only a fantastic descent in (hopefully) untouched powder snow. If you haven’t done alpine ski touring before, we recommend starting with a course or guided ski tour, as there can be a risk of avalanches in some cases. You need to be confident navigating the mountain and have a good understanding of avalanches, including avalanche equipment. STF’s mountain stations offer courses for both beginners and experienced ski mountaineers.

The right of public access.

Swedish mountains are open to all. If you want to reach the summit, the only obstacles are your energy and motivation. However, there are some things worth keeping in mind.

often requires slightly more consideration. In areas with reindeer husbandry, for example, you should keep dogs on a leash at all times of the year. At higher elevations with deep snow, it is possible to ski everywhere without any risk of damaging sensitive land. The only thing to remember is that you must not break off any branches or damage snow-free rock slabs.

The mountains are home to many national parks and nature reserves, where the right of public access is sometimes extended and sometimes restricted. This may mean, for example, that it is forbidden to light fires or take a dog with you. In some places, camping is forbidden, while in others, the allowed duration of a camping stay is longer than what is permitted outside of the national parks. STF hosts at our mountain stations will be happy to help you with information about the regulations that apply.

If you stop for a break, have a good look around before continuing to make sure that you haven’t left any rubbish.

Tips for alpine ski touring

  • Choose the right skis for your tour. Ski equipment comes in various brands, features, and designs. Consider renting so that you know it’s tailored for the activity. Most mountain stations offer equipment rentals, and as an STF member, you can often get a discount on rentals.  It is important to wear a helmet when alpine ski touring as it is for all types of skiing. Make sure that all members of the group have a set of safety equipment.
  • You’ll need a backpack with a capacity of 35-45 liters. In it, pack a map, compass, a first aid kit, sunscreen as well as safety equipment like a transceiver, shovel, avalanche probe, helmet, and windproof sack.
  • Dress in layers and avoid overdressing when you set out because you’ll quickly warm up going uphill. Choose base layers and socks made of wool or synthetic materials to stay warm even when sweating. Over the base layer (and possibly a sweater), wear your transceiver. Shell garments protect against the sun and wind while allowing mobility, but pack warmer insulation clothing in down or fleece to put on when taking breaks on the mountain. A neck gaiter (buff) is handy to have around your neck or head. Protect your eyes with sunglasses or ski goggles.
  • Bring a bigger supply of food and drinks than you might use, just in case of an emergency.
  • It’s crucial to plan your trip well before setting off. Really consider your and your group’s abilities and experience. Avoid going on tours alone and leave a travel itinerary so someone knows your destination, departure time, and estimated return time.
  • Stay updated on reindeer herding activities in the area you’re in. In late winter, reindeer migrate to their summer grazing areas, so be careful not to disturb the reindeer herds. Also, ensure there’s a sufficient snow cover to prevent damaging sensitive ground when skiing.
  • Mountain weather can change rapidly. Always check the weather forecast one more time before heading out. It’s essential to be aware of avalanche forecasts, navigation, and to have a good understanding of avalanche safety equipment.
  • For those who typically snowboard, consider using a splitboard as an alternative. Instead of regular ski touring skis, you can choose this board, which can be split in the middle. This way, you have touring skis for the ascent and can assemble them into a single board for the descent.
