Finding over 50 ski trips

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Growing older doesn’t have to mean giving up on exciting sports holidays. Pack your skis and start planning a thrilling break. Skiing is an excellent way to enjoy the fun of adrenaline-inducing exercise all the while appreciating gorgeous mountain views – what’s not to love?

If you’re keen to hit the slopes but don’t know where to find the right balance of excitement and comfort, get started with our guide to the best skiing holiday resources for the over 50s. You’re sure to find the perfect trip in no time.

Discovering the joys of skiing

Skiing and snowboarding are becoming increasingly popular among older enthusiasts, with Snowshoe Mountain claiming that baby boomers are making a comeback on the slopes. When you think of the exhilaration of whizzing down a slope as well as all of the health benefits of this fun sport – not to mention the beautiful locations and cosy chalets – the rise in the number of older skiers is no real surprise.

Joining a skiing club

A good place to find a dedicated group of older skiers is through the ARPSki over 50s ski club . Founded in 1997, the club has a nationwide membership and organises five or six skiing trips to comfortable chalets and suitable slopes every year. The Ski Club of Great Britain also offers a huge number of holidays all geared towards skiers who’re a little older – and you can choose from a trip to gentle slopes to a more challenging terrain depending on your skill level. Have a look at their Peak Experience packages and see if they have the perfect, pre-organised holiday for you.

Ski holidays are also often an excellent choice for single travellers, as they offer entertainment and fun trips to help you get to know your travelling companions. Check out some of the options available from Piste Pals , a ski company that helps you enjoy solo skiing trips all over the world.

When you’re looking to be inspired by the location, be sure to check out The Independent’s guide to the world’s best ski slopes . The Telegraph has also put together a comprehensive list of different ski holidays , including a profile for older skiers – well worth a look if you want to think outside the box for your next trip. Don’t forget to also sort out travel insurance as soon as you’ve booked your trip. Insuring your sports holiday when you’re over 50 can sometimes be a little tricky, so give yourself plenty of time to pick the right policy and have a read of our guide to getting the best holiday insurance

Ultimate Singles Ski Holiday Guide

By: Author Amanda OBrien

Posted on Last updated: 17/02/2024

Planning the perfect singles holiday is no easy feat. The only person you have to bounce ideas off is yourself. Plus, you get to make all the decisions. The world is your oyster and this is the best opportunity to tailor the ideal holiday for yourself.

Skiing, and all the mountain top feasting, is a pretty social endeavour. And too often we find ourselves holding back on adventures because family and friends aren’t able to accompany us. But there is no reason why you can’t have the most amazing singles ski holiday. Socializing included!

Are you itching to get into that sweet powder snow? Or want to try skiing for the first time? This solo ski guide is going to help you do just that.

Packed with tips for a singles ski getaway and top destination choices, you’ll be in the mountains in no time.

5 Top Tips for Planning a Solo Ski Holiday

solo skier in green jacket looking over snowy mountains

If you’ve decided to take the leap and plan a singles ski holiday – bravo! It can be daunting to head out on holiday by yourself. But there are a few things you can do to make it as care-free and fun as possible.

Check out my 5 tips for organizing a fantastic solo ski holiday.

1.    Book a Solo Ski Trip with an Operator

Planning a ski holiday can be a lot of work, especially with no one else to share the responsibility. Equipment hire, accommodation, lift passes and trying to squish your huge ski jacket into your bag can be  a schlep.

For a hassle-free experience and the opportunity to meet a cool group of single skiers, book a holiday with a solo-friendly tour operator. There are a number of excellent singles operators who specialize in tailor-made adventures on the slopes through singles travel groups.

2.    Book a Group Ski Lesson

Of course, this tip is aimed at beginners or people wanting to improve their technique. This is an excellent way to make friends on the slopes and find out some expert tips about the best runs.

Group lessons are not only a social experience, but they’re also much cheaper than private lessons. You can spend the pennies you save drinking an après-ski drink with your newly made friends.

3.    Get Networking

There are plenty of awesome apps, social networking platforms and forums that you can use to connect with like-minded skiers in the mountains. The most obvious one is Facebook, which has a host of ski groups and forums. This is a great way to reach out to people who are in the same area as you.

Check out some singles travel groups to chat with like-minded people, get inspiration and possibly even meet up!

4.    Keep Your Safety in Mind

One of the biggest benefits of skiing with friends is having a safety net in case of emergencies. Even the most experienced skiers should avoid going off-piste alone. Sticking to prepared ski runs ensures that someone will be close by if an accident happens.

Give the front desk of your hotel your number and let them know that you’ll check in with them at the end of the day. The staff will then know to take action if they don’t hear from you. Likewise, you should keep the emergency number of the mountain rescue service if you happen to get lost.

5.    Carefully Consider Destination & Accommodation

Before you book a holiday, think about what you want to get out of this trip. Are you looking for a relaxing holiday with a lot of ‘me time’ and some skiing in between? Do you want a social scene and a typical après-ski holiday? Have you got a tight budget or the desire to lavish yourself in luxury?

There are many unbelievable skiing destinations and accommodation options to suit every travellers needs. Taking the time to figure out your desires and the best destination will guarantee a fantastic singles ski holiday.

Best Singles Ski Holiday Destinations in Europe

If you’ve decided what you want to get out of your ski holiday, this mini destination guide will be the final piece of the puzzle.

Maybe you’re still not sure whether you want to be dancing to electronic music in your ski boots or getting a facial after a day on the slopes? These destinations will give you some inspiration.

Here are my top picks for European solo skiing destinations and the best accommodations in them.

1. Chamonix, France – a Luxury Getaway

There is absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t spoil yourself with all the finest things on a solo trip. If anything, it’s even more reason to have some pampered ‘me-time’.

This world-renowned ski resort sits at the base of Mont Blanc , the highest peak in the Alps. The mountain views are unparalleled and the ski-in ski-out accommodation options are an absolute treat.

For fabulous luxury accommodation designed for singles, try out Cold Fusion’s latest chalet – Chalet Arberons , 5 miles south of Chamonix. It is a ski-in ski-out property which is ideal as you can avoid long queues for the chairlifts and cramped busses. The chalet is kitted out with sauna, jacuzzi and outdoor hot tub, perfect for unwinding at the end of the day.

The surrounding village is picturesque and has everything you need. Bars, restaurants and shops are all within walking distance.

2. Bad Hofgastein, Austria – Intermediate Spa & Ski Holiday

Chances are that you have never heard of this massive ski area and that’s not surprising. Bad Hofgastein flies under the radar of ski destinations despite having 155 miles of off-piste across the Gastein Valley.

This makes it a perfect spot for intermediate skiers who crave a sense of adventure. And those who love a soak in natural thermal pools after a day of skiing.

The spa town is full of activities besides skiing, which is great for a singles trip. It has less of a ski-resort feel and more of a bustling atmosphere with a beautiful valley setting. If you’re someone who wants to enjoy other activities, this is a good choice.

Hotel Alpenhof is an excellent place for solo travellers as they have single rooms and you don’t have to worry about pesky supplement charges. It’s also a 5-minute walk to the Alpentherme Gastein thermal pools and has a sauna and on-site massages.

3. Sauze d’Oulx, Italy – Après-Ski Vacation

The Milky Way Ski area has some pretty amazing skiing areas and resorts. Sauze d’Oulx is definitely the liveliest of villages along this way and is an up and coming après-ski destination.

Not only does it offer  amazing ski runs, but there are also countless bars, clubs and restaurants to party the night away. It is a beautiful combination of a traditional Italian village laced with a vibrant international skiing scene.

Hotel Stella Alpina is perfectly placed in the heart of the village, with the Via Lattea ski lift right next to it. You can roll out of bed, nursing a bit of a hangover, and head right out onto the slopes.

With an on-site restaurant and continental breakfast, you’ll be adequately fueled and ready to dance till you drop.

4. Itter, Austria – Budget Ski Trip

Skiing is a notoriously expensive hobby and a ski holiday can rack up quite the bill. But Itter is definitely one of the most affordable skiing spots in Europe. It is a great destination for beginners and has a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.

Itter is part of the wider SkiWelt area and lift passes grant access throughout the region. So once you’ve gotten comfortable on the gentle slopes surrounding Itter, you can head further out for more of a challenge.

Keep your costs down by staying at Apartment-Pension Schmiedererhof . It is simple accommodation with everything you need. A massive bonus is that the lift pass is included in the seasonal prices and there is a 5% discount on ski lessons.

There is a free ski bus to and from the slopes and guests receive free entry to the Panorama Badewelt, with indoor and outdoor pools.

If you’re looking for an organised skiing trip specifically for singles check out Mark Warner Holidays . Several friends of mine have been on Mark Warner ski trips as singles and had a great time. And they have chosen to take Mark Warner ski trips again the following year – the ultimate sign of a good holiday.

Get Ready for Your Singles Ski Holiday

Can you smell that fresh mountain air and taste that après-ski drink? Venture out into the world of solo skiing and imagine the experiences that await. Whether you’re a skiing fanatic or a newbie, you have the opportunity to meet a bunch of people through classes, online groups and tours.

If you’re looking to chill out in luxury or party like a bundled-up rockstar, there is a destination fit for you. Pack your bags, don your thermals, squeeze on some ski socks and enjoy an awesome singles ski holiday.

I have to agree that the Chamonix region is one of the best! To be fair, skiing in any of the French resorts is amazing, and the people there are very welcoming to solo skiiers too - I'm sure you could just walk into an apres-ski in one of the restaurants and join a party! (Not during Covid, of course!)

Hi Maria - yes good point re Chamonix and skiing in general at the moment - hopefully this will apply again when the pandemic is over!

Waterproof ski jacket

Waterproof ski trousers

Ski gloves or mittens

Ski socks (comfortable feet are essential when skiing and so it is worth investing in a few good pairs of socks)

Thermal base layers (it is advisable to layer your clothing when skiing so that you can remove layers if you become too hot and replace them when needed)

Light fleeces/jumpers (to layer over a base layer and under your ski jacket) – thick jumpers can be bulky and restrict movement when worn under a ski jacket

Warm hat (we recommend wearing a helmet when skiing, but this can be hired in resort)

Goggles and good quality sunglasses (the sun is extremely powerful in the mountains and the reflection off the snow can be very strong on the eyes)

Sunscreen/block for the face and neck

Winter insurance – it is essential that your travel insurance covers you for winter sports

Single Ski Holidays

If you are an adventure seeker when it comes to skiing and like to hit the slopes alone or it's a sport where you dedicate time for yourself, then solo ski holidays are not to be missed.

Reach destinations you hadn’t perhaps considered before when travelling with others. Singles ski holidays provide you with so many opportunities, from a schedule designed solely around you due to the freedom a solo ski holiday provides. To the chance to make new friends as you mingle during après hour or buddy up during your ski lesson.

Solo ski holidays

The freedom:

  • Plan your own schedule for the week so every day of skiing is centred around what you want to gain from it - whether you fancy a ski lesson in the morning, to finish early and enjoy some afternoon après with newly made friends or you want to head out for a full day on the slopes - time is yours.
  • Take a break as and when you like, you are on your own time so if you fancy a mountain side coffee break or to finish the slopes in time for a leisurely lunch in resort , then the choice is yours.
  • Dine every day at your favourite cuisine stops. No need to worry about pleasing a group, the choice is yours. Meaning if you want to try a new place for dinner every night, you can or if you find the best meal in town, you can dine there every night.

Discovery & Growth:

  • Go at your own speed when solo skiing. There is no pressure to keep pace (or slow down) when it’s all about your own skills. Plan your preferred routes each day and enjoy the chance to discover new runs.
  • Perfect your skills in your own time, find that run that you feel challenges you and master it. There is no time pressure as it’s only you, so you can ascend, ski and repeat until you feel confident. If you need a little advice or would like to learn some new ski skills, you can opt to book a private ski lesson, just one to one with a ski instructor.
  • Choose your activities based on what you want to achieve from your week on the slopes. You may be there to push your limits and hit the slopes every day. You could also be looking to branch out and try a bit of cross-country skiing or a snowboarding lesson - you create the schedule as a solo skiing.

Meet & Mingle:

  • Solo skiing doesn’t mean you have to hit the mountains alone, joining a ski guiding tour is a great way to ski with others, enjoy guided routes and have company when pausing for lunch.
  • If you are new to skiing or snowboarding, then joining a ski school for some group lessons is the best choice. Not only can you learn from your instructor but also from others in the group, as well as meet some friendly faces each day who you then may spend your afternoons mastering the slopes with.
  • The great thing about the sport of skiing is the large après ski culture . No matter the resort you’ve chosen for your solo ski escape, there is always a chance to mingle over drinks, often starting in the afternoon and carrying on until the early hours. You will always find a bar, hotel lobby or even nightclub with plenty of like minded travellers.
  • Accommodation options can also offer a great way to meet like minded skiers. Opting to stay in our catered chalets with others gives you a chance to enjoy breakfast with conversation and evenings discussing routes.

Solo ski deals:

  • Solo skiing doesn't need to cost you more, which is often the preconception but not always the case.
  • Inghams offers a selection of single skier accommodation with no supplement for travelling solo as part of the ski package.
  • See in the table below some of the destinations you can find these solo ski deals.

Why book a singles holidays in your 50s

When we reach our 50s we often feel more content and enriched than when we were partying away in our 20s. We know what we want. We have a treasure chest of valuable experiences. Travelling in your 50s offers a world of opportunities. We choose where to go and what to do on holiday.

If you have children, they are probably grown up now and living independent lives. In our 50s, we have achieved a certain standard of living and feel like this is our time: We want to focus on ourselves and enjoy life. We also have more time as we no longer juggle work and bringing up young children, and we have less financial pressure than in our 30s and 40s. So now is our time to go to interesting and new destinations, with other travellers of our own age.

Joining a group holiday for singles over 50 is a new experience for many, but we can assure you that it is the best choice you can make. People are friendlier than you might expect and you can enjoy the company of other travellers of your age, exchange life experiences and make new friends. You might have spent the last 20 years travelling with your children and putting your children’s needs first. And let’s face it, most children are not interested in extensive sightseeing and you cannot embark on a wine tasting evening in the company of young children. So now is the time to visit all the places you always wanted to see and join all the activities and cultural offerings that will have been unsuitable on a holiday with young children.

The line's two newest vessels, Celebrity Beyond and Celebrity Ascent (set to debut in late 2023), each boast 32 single staterooms with an Infinite Veranda. In addition, Celebrity Apex has 24 solo cabins, and Celebrity Edge features 16 staterooms for individual guests. These one-person accommodations offer a minimum of 131 square feet of space and the same upscale amenities you'll find in other category staterooms on their ships. Solo guests can look for special promotions where the single supplement is waived on select Celebrity voyages throughout the year.

Once on board the vessel, check out the daily program for activities conducive to meeting others – like wine tastings, cocktail-making classes and more. You'll also enjoy thrilling top-notch entertainment around the ship in The Theatre, The Club and Eden. A few popular cruises for singles are the line's Caribbean and Mexico itineraries on Celebrity Beyond.

The hip vibe on board the adults-only Virgin Voyages ships is ideal for solo cruisers looking to meet other travelers. Its superyacht-style ships – Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady – offer 40 interior cabins ranging in size from 105 to 177 square feet. There are also six Sea View staterooms with portholes boasting between 130 to 190 square feet of space. These Insider and Sea View cabins are designed and priced for single travelers, with amenities like high-tech mood lighting and roomy rain showers. The line also runs promotions where solo cruisers can book double occupancy staterooms without paying a single supplement.

Activities and festival-like entertainment around the ships foster fast friendships. Diners will enjoy the interactive experience at Gunbae, the lively Korean barbecue venue. The "grog walk" is a fun pub stroll where solo sailors can join fellow mates while sipping and snacking their way through all the signature bars. For even more fun, check out the evening shipwide events such as the themed Scarlet Party, which features live music and immersive experiences. The line also hosts meetups for singles throughout each voyage.
