Cycling’s Most Emasculating Tradition: The Toy Lion Trophy

It's not exactly the Stanley Cup, but there's a reason why all Tour de France stage winners receive a stuffed lion on the podium.

You’ll never see Peyton Manning triumphantly holding up a Mickey Mouse doll after winning the Super Bowl. Or Lebron James cuddling a teddy bear after winning the NBA Finals. No. Those dudes hold up trophies. Big-ass, sterling silver trophies.

So what’s the deal with giving cutesy stuffed lions to Tour de France stage winners? What do the cyclists do with them? Cut the heads off and mount them like hunting trophies? Stick them in a glass case so they won’t get mixed up with their kids’ Beanie Boos ? Snuggle with them for good luck?

What gives, cycling? What’s the deal with the weirdly infantile tradition that will surely play out again at this year’s Tour?

Turns out plenty of cycling forum users have their own theories. Perhaps ergogenic drugs are delivered inside the lion, right under the WADA officials’ noses. Or, as Nigel-YZ1 wrote on cyclechat.net , cyclists get the toy “to hold in front of themselves to avoid the more revealing pics of them in lycra making a scandal in the tabloids.”

Plausible theories, cycling enthusiasts. But the lion was actually the mascot of longtime Tour de France title sponsor Crédit Lyonnais. According to French sports magazine L’Équipe , the bank has been handing out the fluffy lions at the Tour since 1987. Forty-five of the little guys attend the Tour each year, with one distributed to each day’s winner and the rest closely guarded to avoid loss or (zut alors!) theft.

A few years ago, L’Équipe writes , marketing execs at the bank decided the lions were outdated and thought about replacing them with a more traditional big-ass trophy—particularly becuase the lion is no longer the bank’s mascot. (“It was a bit aggressive,” Crédit Lyonnais PR man Arnaud Loubier told PEZ Cycling News .) But common sense prevailed (“le bon sens a prévalu”) and the officials stuck with the stuffed prizes.

Crédit Lyonnais sponsorship exec Sophie Moressee-Pichot says you shouldn’t see cyclists at any other race holding up the stuffed lion, even though the bank sponsors several other events that Le Tour’s production company—the ASO—puts on, including Paris-Nice, Criterium International, Paris-Roubaix, Tour de Picardie, Tour de Languedoc-Roussillon, Tour de L’Avenir, and Tour of Burkina Faso. The bank only uses the lion at the Tour de France.

With Crédit Lyonnais signed on through 2018 as a TdF sponsor, expect to see more champion cyclists holding up stuffed lions for years to come.

What's with the stuffed animals...

...they give the yellow jersey holder after each stage? It seems a little incongruous. "You're leading the most brutal sporting event on the planet...so here's a stuffed lion!" You're thoughts?

The race is sponsored by Credit Lyonnais. The lion is advertising for them.

The Giro was much better. The race was sponsored by a cheese consortium (Parmagiana Reggiano?) so they all got a nice silver cheese spade for the win. Useful and attractive.

i love the lion. my wife says we should get one for our kid, as it is his favorite part of the race. i told her she married the wrong guy if she expects me to come home with one.

As for Tugboat, he's been making himself busy by chewing the daylights out of one of the Credit Lyonnais lions CSC-Tiscali was given while leading the team competition during the early stages of the race. He kind of made the executive decision that one of my three miniature lions would become a dog toy. He has yet to put it down. He's even sleeping on it like it's some kind of pillow. Normally, Tugboat likes to go to town on his toys until he can get the stuffing out of them. So, I'm going to have to keep an eye on him with the lion. Because you can't get a replacement model at Petco. Click to expand...

I've bid on several of the lions on Ebay, but they all go for more than I want to pay. All of them have gone for over $100. One on Ebay right now is over $300.

Tour de France green jersey with Irishman after 31 years – News Shorts

Poels powers through injuries as most combative, riders baffled on 'easy day' for stage 5

Tour de France 2020 107th Edition 5th stage Gap Privas 183 km 02092020 Sam Bennett IRL Deceuninck Quick Step photo POOL David StockmanBelgaBettiniPhoto2020

Sam Bennett ( Deceuninck-QuickStep ) has been proud to wear his Irish national champion's kit at this year's Tour de France, but after sprinting to a third place finish on stage 5 from Gap to Privas on Wednesday, he was just as happy to switch it out for the green jersey. He became the first Irishman in 31 years to wear the points classification prize – the last being Sean Kelly in 1989.

"I think there will be a big buzz [at home in Ireland]," said Kelly, who retired in 1994 with 193 career victories, on the Eurosport broadcast. "A lot was expected of Bennett going into this Tour. He's been talked up a lot going for stages and the green jersey. Now he's got the green jersey, so it's always a great thing for cycling back in Ireland. There is a big buzz on, and that will boost it that bit more."

Bennett took maximum points at the intermediate sprint bonus in L'Epine after 47.5 kilometres of racing on Wednesday, giving him the edge over Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe), who could only manage fourth. In the second sprint, Bennett was again ahead of Sagan for two more points. At the finish in Privas, Bennett's final push put him in front of Sagan on the line, securing the final podium spot behind stage winner Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) and runner-up Cees Bol (Sunweb).

"It's a special moment in my career to hold the green jersey for at least a day. To follow in their [Sean Kelly and 1987 Tour winner Stephen Roche's] footsteps is something quite amazing. I'm really proud to do it, and proud to be here in the national champion's jersey and represent Ireland," Bennett said to Flobikes after the stage.

Bennett's achievements at this year's Tour are getting attention. Former Tour de France winner and television commentator Bradley Wiggins was impressed by today's strong moves by the Irishman.

"He's got a realistic chance of winning this competition now. He's probably the fastest in the race, along with Caleb Ewan [Lotto Soudal]," Wiggins said on Eurosport . "But great for Bennett. There's a new added pressure now that when you take that green jersey, what becomes your priority? Winning stages or racking up points?"

Battered Poels selected as most combative

Meet the most combative rider of the day. 👊🏆 @Wout.Poels, we're super proud of you. Despite the injuries sustained on stage 1, you keep pushing. #whereiswout #smilingisforfree #RideAsOne #TDF2020 ⁣ 📸 @BettiniPhoto and @cyclingimages Team Bahrain McLaren A photo posted by @bahrainmclaren on Sep 2, 2020 at 12:42pm PDT

Four days after a nasty crash on stage 1 in Nice, Wout Poels has continued riding for his Bahrain McLaren team with a broken rib and a lung contusion. After the finish in Privas on stage 5, he was recognised as the most combative rider, getting respect from many inside and outside the peloton.

Former professional cyclist Bram Tankink, who raced with a broken rib during his career, spoke highly of his fellow Dutchman.

"After 10 days, the fracture will heal itself. Then a little more space is created. Then you have to hope that it stays together," said Tankink on 1limburg.nl , recalling that after more than a week with a broken rib, there is still pain. "I coughed once and I couldn't move anymore and my rib came loose. Every movement hurt like hell after that."

Despite any pain or discomfort, Poels was not the last rider across the line on Wednesday, finishing in 168th place out of 172 positions, seven minutes off the winning pace set by Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma).

Peloton comes to rare consensus on 'strange' Tour de France stage

It is rare that the professional peloton can agree on how anything happens in the sport, but there was unanimous opinion about stage 5 of the Tour de France: it was strange. When race director Christian Prudhomme dropped the flag at kilometre zero, nobody attacked. And nobody attacked the entire stage.

Matt White, head sports director of Mitchelton-Scott, said he couldn't recall ever seeing a Tour de France stage without a single breakaway.

"But it's not a normal TDF. It's been an aggressive first week, but normally the invited teams and the local teams are always interested in putting someone up the road. There was none of that today. It was a pretty calm stage until the last hour of racing, when nerves and wind and going into certain towns amped up the anxiety and the pace was very fast going into the finish."

Simon Geschke (CCC Team) was especially flummoxed, writing on Twitter: "Let's put it this way – today you could have ridden with no problems until 60km before the finish. In jeans and a t-shirt. I had an average heart rate of 113."

Astana's sport manager Dmitriy Fofonov said his team was solely focused on protecting Miguel Angel Lopez, rather than going with any attacks.

"Indeed, it was quite a strange stage with no breakaway, but all the teams were worried about the wind in the final, so, maybe, every team decided to protect their leaders rather than to try to do something in the break," Fofonov said on the team's website. "However, it was one more day at the Tour de France, and for us it went pretty good. Another important stage is waiting for us tomorrow, so let's see what happens there."

For the EF Pro Cycling squad, rider Jens Keukeleire said it's not normal to have such an easy day in the Tour de France, but that the hectic finishes always make up for it.

"I was actually wondering why we were going so hard because there wasn't a breakaway that we had to catch, but it was just that everyone wanted to be in a good position. You saw about 10 kilometres from the finish that we hit a left corner and some guys got dropped, and there was still a big group in the front. If you're not paying attention, you can get dropped there," said Keukeleire, who won a stage at the Vuelta a España in 2016.

"I think we did well and were all in a good position there, and didn't lose any time today," he said, with EF team leader Rigoberto Uran moving into 14th place in the general classification after the stage.

Grand Tour veteran Matthieu Ladagnous of Groupama-FDJ blamed the difficulty of the opening stages, as well as the upcoming days of climbing.

"We've had four difficult first stages, and everyone was probably tired," Ladagnous said. "There are also four difficult stages left before the rest day, and two tough weeks after that. If we can get some calm days, we are not going to say no. Apparently, everyone was fine with it as there was no breakaway."

Michał Kwiatkowski (Ineos Grenadiers) wrote on Twitter (see below) that no one was brave enough on Wednesday to go in a breakaway, but that they'll try again on the next stage: "No hope for breakaways before, so no surprise there wasn't anyone brave enough today. Eat (not so much), ride, sleep repeat once again."

Maxoo – the official mascot of the Tour de France

skoda stuffed animal tour de france

From a young age, MAX loved to explore the roads, valleys and summits by bike as he travelled to pick up his father. Together they would sit and watch the sun, as MAX listened to his father’s marvellous stories. As a result, he developed extraordinary cycling skills… One day, the Tour de France came to town. Initially, it was the delightful surprise that captured MAXOO’s attention, from the cluster of motorhomes setting up by the side of the road to the procession of klaxons and happy laughter. But when he saw the Tour de France structures being set up, with the emblem of a cyclist on a bicycle with a sun wheel rising into the sky, he was struck by a revelation! The next day, when the winner of the stage crossed the finish line in his yellow leader’s jersey to the sound of a cheering crowd won over by his courage and determination, MAXOO’s conversion was complete; he instantly became a lifelong fan!

A Primer on the Red Škoda ENYAQ iV, the Tour de France’s Leading Car

A Primer on the Red Škoda ENYAQ iV, the Tour de France’s Leading Car

Besides the Arc de Triomphe, the winding mountain climbs, and, of course, the peloton, the striking red leading car is one of the most characteristic symbols of the La Grande Boucle. Traditionally found at the launch of each stage and the tip of the peloton, the Tour director’s car serves as a ‘mobile captain’s bridge’ and is essential for the race’s organisational efforts. Let’s take a closer look!

The leading cars are basically headquarters on four wheels with one essential job: to chauffeur around the Tour directors. This year, it’s Christian Prudhomme and, after a 33-year hiatus, also a Tour de France Femmes director, Marion Rousse. In 2020, Škoda, the Tour’s sponsor for nearly two decades, introduced the all-electric Škoda ENYAQ iV as the leading car, the model being fresh off the assembly line at the time. As a harbinger of change, the ENYAQ iV was not only the first all-electric vehicle to lead the Tour de France peloton, but also Škoda’s first model using the modular electrification toolkit (MEB) as a powertrain in a bid for sustainability. After the initial run proved successful, the ENYAQ iV replaced the traditional leading Škoda SUPERBs for good.

The manufacturing of the leading cars falls into the “top secret” category, but we were lucky enough to learn a few details last year . The cars’ transformation takes place near Mladá Boleslav, the Czech Republic, under the skilled hands of Mr. Martin Smutný and others at Best Modell, a small specialised workshop. The changes the vehicles undergo before gaining their honourable role aren’t just cosmetic, although the external add-ons – the ‘Velvet Red’ paint job, the banners and decals, the yellow attachment above the windscreen, the six antennas – are usually the details you notice first.

In the workshop, the cars are stripped to the bone, rewired, reupholstered and fitted with a panoramic, retractable sunroof, a two-way radio and a communication console found between the car’s front seats, along with a mini-fridge for two bottles of Champagne accompanied by unique 3D-printed glass holders, and extra batteries to power all this additional hardware. The sunroof, which the builders say is the trickiest part to make, is used by the directors, who stand and wave the starting flag at ‘Kilometre Zero’ and also observe the peloton.

ENYAQ iV

Circling back to the built-in radio, it’s probably the most important piece of equipment that the cars carry. At an event of such massive proportions, communication is key. The race directors use the radio to receive race information and to communicate with their marshals (who also ride in ‘Velvet Red’ ENYAQ iVs ), as well as neutral support cars, and the individual team cars to give orders, advice and, if needed, the permission to break rank. The last situation happens when a rider has mechanical issues, has been injured (or sometimes both) and needs swift assistance. Since the riders’ starting positions in each stage depend on the current points and running order of their teams, a low ranking might mean a team car very far away from a rider in trouble. If requested, the Tour directors can give team cars permission to speed ahead to the rescue.

Last but not least, the leading cars serve as the representative office where the Tour directors receive their esteemed VIP guests, including the French president. Thanks to the abovementioned Champagne fridge and holders, they can treat their lucky visitors to a one-of-a-kind sightseeing tour of the, well, Tour, accompanied by refreshments.

With the Tour de France (1–24 July) underway and the Tour de France Femmes (24–31 July) coming soon, we are elated to get twice as much action this year. We hope you’ll join us in the grandest celebration of our beloved sport!

Eksklusiv Part of the Tour-kollektion

We Love Cycling

The skoda superb tour de france edition is based on the superb outdoor, and celebrates the famous cycle race.

Although the Skoda Superb Tour De France comes with a load of equipment, it looks pricey next to the basic Outdoor model. If cycling is your thing, we’d save the cash and fit a top-of-the-range bike rack to a standard Skoda estate.

The Tour de France is cycling’s most famous event, and one of its main sponsors, Skoda, is celebrating the race by releasing this Skoda Superb Tour De France edition.

The car is based on the Superb Outdoor and builds on the already generous spec by adding a host of extras for the cycle enthusiasts. Like all Outdoor models, it’s only available with four-wheel drive – with the TdF model mated to a 138bhp 2.0-litre TDI engine and six-speed manual gearbox.

It’s as smooth as ever, with pretty generous fuel economy, too. Motorway cruising is a strong point, with decent refinement and a nice cushioned ride. In short, it’s as good as any other Superb.

Outside you get a choice of white, red or blue paint in tribute to the French flag and some subtle Tour de France badging. Our car came with a useful roof-mounted bike rack, but all models come with a clever internal racking system and a set of cheap and cheerful waterproof seat covers to protect the standard leather trim.

The Superb also gets dual-zone air-con, 18-inch alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, sat-nav and DAB radio.

The Tour de France edition costs almost £1,500 more than the equivalent Superb Outdoor, and will cost exactly the same to run thanks to identical economy and emissons. While the equipment list is extensive, it’ll only really appeal to die-hard cycling fans – so unless your name is Bradley Wiggins or Chris Hoy, we’d save the cash and spend the difference on a new bike with a few choice extras.

During this time he has covered a huge amount of news and reviews for Auto Express, as well as being the face of Carbuyer and DrivingElectric on Youtube. 10 Things You Should Know about the Tour de France

10 Things You Should Know about the Tour de France

Going to the Tour de France for the first time this year? Or keen to impress others with your knowledge of La Grande Boucle? Afraid of missing out on something important? Read the best tips that you won’t hear on TV.

Black-line

When you watch the race on television, you have a perfect overview of how it is unfolding, you can see who’s leading, you count the spacing, and you know about every puncture and duel. Stuck in a crowd by the track somewhere in France , however, you know nothing about the race. The situation has changed with smartphones and high-speed internet, but honestly – who wants to be staring at their phone in a crowd of hyped-up spectators? On the other hand, besides soaking up the inimitable atmosphere, you will witness things the TV can never convey. For example, you will see how fascinatingly fast the leading cyclists are. That hill on the route that you rode up sweating like crazy yesterday? You’ll see the cyclists tackle it at the speed of a motorcycle. The energy they put into the race is contagious. Only here will you understand that professional cyclists are an explosive cocktail of self-flagellation, renunciation and euphoria.

expectation-vs-reality

Anyone who has been to the Tour de France knows that no matter how big a flag they take to France, there will always be someone else right by with a bigger one. At the beginning, the audience is split into hardcore fans, who wear special costumes that they’ve been preparing for at least half a year, and civilian spectators who could easily be mistaken for visitors to the Louvre. Yet as the day wears on, the difference blurs. Everyone who comes along gets sucked in by the atmosphere and wants to join the vortex of excitement. This is crowned by the caravan of advertising floats, transforming the people along the official route into a thousand-headed cheering audience of cyclist ultras.

flags-and-other-accessories-1

Who would not want to bring home a  trophy from the Tour de France to display on the mantelpiece? Well, we will sadly have to disappoint all eager collectors. A tossed water bottle is a rarity, and even if one of the racers does drop one, you’d have to be very lucky to get there first. Getting your hands on any other authentic collectible is just wishful thinking. Don’t count on taking home a torn jersey, a wet raincoat or a crooked wheel rim cast off by the roadside; nothing like that happens. Fortunately, most of the audience’s thirst for such objects is slated by the caravan of floats passing through the route before the actual race.

Trophies

One survey confirmed that up to 39% of spectators look forward to the caravan of floats more than the race. The caravan is as important to the Tour de France as the Alpine passes. It passes the route of each stage a few hours before the peloton. Sponsors fall over each other to see who can come up with a creatively dressed-up car that will attract most spectators. The convoy is accompanied by music and dancers and can easily be compared to Love Parade. Merchandise rains on the spectators, leaving no one without a jersey, cap, key ring, stuffed toy, chocolate, shopping bag, parade stick with the name of a favourite rider, bidon, protein stick or other similar gifts.

Sponsors-Caravan-

The presence of the French police is often infuriating. Regardless of whether you’re driving or walking, the police will often block your way and not let you through. Sometimes they close entire neighbourhoods without any evident reason. Worse, it seems that the police refuse to accept the fact that languages other than French are spoken in the world. But don’t judge them too harshly. As a beetle in the crowd, you have no idea how tough it is to control dozens, or even hundreds of thousands of spectators so that paramedics can make their way through whatever the situation and no one poses a risk to the race itself. This would not be possible without the police. You just have to accept it.

Police

You’re in France, so food paradise – like Eden just before the snake descended from the tree and tempted Eve with the apple. Taking food with you, then, might sound like a deadly sin... Wrong! In big cities this might not be a problem, but in small mountain villages, the shops and restaurants are designed to accommodate a few hundred locals, not hordes of thousands. On top of that, they’re strict about their opening hours and on Sunday everything is closed. Anyone who wants to survive the hours of waiting for the arrival of the peloton should pack as if they were on an expedition to the South Pole. Experienced Tour de France fans know that, besides having the itinerary on them, they also need large supplies of food, drinks, toiletries, a chair, a blanket, a raincoat, a parasol...

Food-and-drink

Consider yourself warned – you will wait for absolutely everything. You will wait in traffic jams and just to get into the car park. You will slowly be moved along by the crowd until you find somewhere to anchor yourselves by the road and wait for ages until anything happens. The most spectacular places to watch the race, such as the Col du Tourmalet pass and the Col du Galibier pass, the Mont Ventoux climb, and the famous Mur de Bretagne “wall", will become impregnable fortresses during the races. Even if the peloton does not pass until late afternoon, you must get there early in the morning. You can forget about comfort, taking toddlers with you could lead to a visit from the social, and the loo is au naturel in the nearby forest. On the other hand, the atmosphere is thrilling. Even those who are here for the first time, and perhaps dragged along with the family, often get swallowed up by it. People are entranced, and although they come from different countries and often can’t understand each other, they are always able to communicate, simply because they want to. The Pyrenees, the doglegs leading to Alpe d’Huez, and the final straight on the Champs-Élysées will captivate you.

Waiting

Camper vans are just as much a symbol of the Tour de France as fans holding flags and painting their faces in their national colours. Anyone who owns a camper van is king. However, it is necessary to arrive well in advance of the itinerary. An experienced traveller and his house on wheels will have to get to their spot three or four days before the contestants to find a decent place to park. The time left before the race is spent barbequing, downing cans of beer, opening wine bottles and watching the race on a large-screen television positioned in front of the vehicle. On the day of the race, they turn it round so that everyone who comes along can watch as they surround the camper vans on all sides. As soon as the whizz of the peloton is gone, they quickly toss the folding chairs into the camper van, pack up the TV and grill, and hurry to the next destination, which is usually a stage that takes place at least four more days in advance. Two hours after the race, you would hardly know that thousands of people had been there just a short while ago.

Caravans-edited

The Tour de France is an extraordinary opportunity to try out what it is like to ride the routes of the stages where the professionals battle it out. Even a couple of hours before the expected peloton arrives you can jump on your bike and pedal away. If you’re athletic, you’ll enjoy the same spectator reception during heavy climbs as the big stars. Excited fans will act as if they had no idea you’re not Chris Froome climbing on your bike.

Cyclists

The Tour de France is a massive national holiday in France. Suddenly, they turn a blind eye – you can leave your car almost anywhere, and if the camps are full, locals will even look the other way if you decide to camp at the roundabout or on their front lawn. Some might even come to offer you a glass of their homemade wine.

15 years of partnership between the Tour de France and ŠKODA

white-line-stripe

This is carmaker ŠKODA’s 15th year as the general sponsor of the Tour de France, the legendary annual cycling race. Besides laying on a large fleet of cars, ŠKODA also designs the winners’ trophies. This year, the designers have teamed up with Bohemian glassmakers to produce 60 cm tall trophies weighing in at 4 kg for the champions of the 105th Tour de France. In the 2018 event, the racers have to surmount 3,351 extremely tough kilometres over 21 stages.

ŠKODA, as an official partner, will supply 250 cars for the race. In addition to ŠKODA OCTAVIAs, the fleet also includes the SUVs ŠKODA KAROQ and KODIAQ and the ŠKODA SUPERB sedan. A ŠKODA service team will prep all the cars so that they are in perfect condition before each stage.
