Star Trek: Spock's 15 Best Quotes, Ranked

Spock is one of the most notable figures within the Star Trek franchise, and his philosophy on life and logic brings timeless wisdom to all.

Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek : The Original Series introduced excited science-fiction fans to the iconic duo Spock and Kirk . Often at odds with one another because of how vastly their point of view differed, Spock's logic paired well with Kirk's impetuous nature, provoking thoughtful commentary and hilarious banter. There was a definite sense of balance between them, with each man poised at opposite sides of the spectrum, but they almost always found common ground when necessary.

Leonard Nimoy's portrayal of the half-human, half-Vulcan was iconic. Spock paved the way for the creation of numerous characters as the Star Trek franchise began to expand. His influence over the development of the android artificial intelligence Data (Brent Spiner) in The Next Generation is clear in Data's curiosity about human nature. He can be seen also be seen in Voyager 's holo-physician, The Doctor (Robert Picardo), who employed an acerbic bedside manner and logic for problem-solving the crew sometimes lacked. Deep Space 9 's changeling Chief of Security, Odo (Rene Aubergenois), carried himself with a similar sense of rigidity. While each of them shared personality traits with Spock, one of the most prominent similarities they shared was the perspective of an outsider--always viewing humanity, judging and trying to understand its nature.

With Leonard Nimoy's passing, his legacy as Spock carries on through actors like Zachary Quinto and Ethan Peck. Quinto gave voice to Vulcan logic in the Star Trek reboot films directed by J.J. Abrams, while Peck portrays young Spock in Discovery and Strange New Worlds . Nimoy set the foundation, establishing an unforgettable character who spoke volumes on the nature of humanity over the years.

Spock's unique view on life, humanity, and most especially his fellow crew mates sometimes led to strained relationships. Therein lay his deepest observations and wittiest banter. Spock fought hard to deny the human side of his nature, and all too often his read on the people around him only furthered his desire to forget that despite being raised on Vulcan, he was still part-human himself.

15 "It is more rational to sacrifice one life than six, Doctor."

Logic and rationale were at the forefront of everything Spock adhered to, which often made it hard for the people around him to relate. It was easy for him to make judgment calls that would give others pause as they weighed it all out because in his mind the right answer was always the logical one. Even when it came to having to sacrifice lives, he was quick to point out something that would become a standard Star Trek philosophy: the needs of the many far outweigh the needs of the few or the one.

It is a logical observation, to be sure, but in the 1967 episode "The Galileo 7," Dr. McCoy can't wrap his head around Spock's rational response. What McCoy more than likely struggled with was how quick and easy it was for Spock to decide another's fate, even it was rational.

14 "I am frequently appalled by the low regard you Earthmen have for life."

In that same 1967 episode that provoked Spock's quick reaction to saving the many over the one, he also made note of how appalling he found the human disregard for life itself. This prompted an eventual debate about their responsibility to weigh all components before making rash judgments and decisions when his crewmates Gaetano and Boma suggest destroying the antropoids that have stranded them. This episode provided a lot of insight into how the people Spock worked with every day viewed him. They found his cold rationale to be unnerving, but in the end, he made the most sound decisions to display his respect for life as a whole.

13 "Evil does seem to maintain power by suppressing the truth."

When Spock and the crew bring a group of children suffering from amnesia aboard the Enterprise in Season 3, Episode 4, "And the Children Shall Lead," McCoy discovers that they've all blocked out the details of specific events, including what happened to their parents. While trying to make sense of not only what happened, but why those specific memories were wiped, Spock recognizes evil's inclination to avoid outright lying by withholding information entirely. So long as those they wish to control don't know all the facts, they will go on believing whatever they are told.

After the children become possessed by the dark spirit that destroyed their lives, Spock shows them footage of what really happened. Learning the truth broke the entity's hold over them, allowing them to finally grieve for what they'd lost. This is definitely a piece of wisdom that carries over into the world, encouraging everyone to seek the truth and find the facts before committing to another's beliefs or will.

12 "Vulcans never bluff."

In the 1966 episode " The Doomsday Machine ," Spock finds himself pushed out of the command position Kirk left him in when he refuses to attack a massive planet killer. Decker, the man who took over, eventually provoked Spock's ire after Kirk found out what was going on. Insisting that Decker step down, he challenges Spock's authority and accuses him of bluffing. Spock's claim that Vulcans don't bluff may be somewhat exaggerated, but their reputation for keeping a cool head in the face of adversity certainly makes his words believable. There's a chance he was bluffing, but how would one actually know?

11 "...The female capacity to avoid a direct answer to any question."

The 1960s were a much different time, but Star Trek did attempt to at least given women equal opportunities aboard the Enterprise. On the other hand, the show often portrayed them in a narrow minded light. Like Spock noting his failure to understand why it was so hard for women to directly answer a question when asked. At the time, a joke like that might be easily overlooked as just women and those pesky feminine wiles of theirs. Today it wouldn't stand. Spock may have been half-Vulcan, but his half-human side didn't always prevent him from adopting a poor view on females.

10 "Captain, you almost make me believe in luck."

Luck is entirely illogical, according to Spock. Those who put their stock in luck are asking to be let down, but Captain Kirk's quick wit and ability to find his way out of a tight spot are often inspired. Even Spock can't help but admire the captain, confessing that the ease with which he solves a major problem in Season 1, Episode 23, "A Taste of Armageddon," is almost enough to make him believe in the possibility of luck itself.

9 "If I were human, I believe my response would be 'Go to hell'."

In Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country , Spock finds himself questioning whether age has made him and Kirk too rigid and set in their ways to be useful. When Uhura tells him that they are to return the Enterprise to dock, so she can be decommissioned, he lets himself give in to his human side by telling authority to go to hell. Even after all those years out there among the stars, Spock still struggled to accept that a part of him was human, clinging almost desperately to his Vulcan half. This rare moment in which he relents is proof enough that neither he nor Kirk are too old to keep going as long as it takes.

8 "Logic is the beginning of wisdom. Not the end."

Another bit of wisdom from the 1991 film, The Undiscovered Country , Spock finds himself face to face with his own Vulcan apprentice, Valeris, who turns out to be an assassin working against the Enterprise. Much of the original Star Trek saw Starfleet in constant, tense negotiations with the Klingons. Given their nature, Valeris didn't believe peace with them to be logical, and given the Klingon nature, perhaps her viewpoint was logical. But as Spock pointed out, logic is just the beginning when it comes to making wise decisions. One can't rely on that alone to determine outcomes.

7 "It is the lot of man to strive, no matter how content he is."

Even in the proposed future, with humankind out gallivanting among the stars, Spock observes their ever-present sense of ambition. No matter how far humanity comes, or how much they achieve, there is a constant push to do more, receive more, and strive for more. Perhaps slowing down and taking stock in one's contentment would grant a new perspective, one in which they don't need to strive ever onward, but it's hard to imagine. Humanity reached for the stars and grasped onto them, but there must be more and they will find it.

6 "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few."

As mentioned previously, this philosophy became a focal point for Star Trek as a whole. No matter where the journey takes a crew, they will always face situations that require this reminder. The number of people out there among the stars who are perfectly content to destroy an entire world or system to save just one person is greater than one might imagine. The idea of losing a single loved one is painful, but setting aside that pain and embracing logic has the power to preserve the continued growth and expansion of life overall.

5 "Insufficient facts always invite danger."

Kirk didn't become captain because he was impetuous, but he did have a tendency to charge in first and ask questions later. Fortunately, he had Spock by his side to remind him to take care. Charging into a situation without all the facts is dangerous. While Kirk may like to laugh in the face of danger, it's definitely been a source of trouble for him throughout his career. It likely would have been a lot worse if not for Spock.

4 "Men sometimes see exactly what they wish to see."

In the most critical moments, it's far too easy to overlook what's right there and see what one wants instead. How often did Spock see only what he wanted to see? Perhaps while looking in the mirror, seeing only the Vulcan side of himself, ignoring the human.

Despite his wise observations on human nature, Spock had flaws of his own. It would be easy for him to see his humanity reflected in his faults, but a good many of them boiled down to his Vulcan nature. It would be difficult, if not impossible, for him to ever admit that.

3 "It is curious how often you humans manage to obtain..."

Spock isn't the only living being to observe how often humans wind up getting exactly what they don't want. He noted how curious it seemed, "How often you humans manage to obtain that which you do not want." It goes hand in hand with humanity's lot in life to strive. In some ways, it's an afterthought on being "careful what you wish for," though it's likely Spock would note that wishes had nothing to do with the outcome.

2 "One man cannot summon the future..."

Mankind spends a lot of time thinking about the future, wishing it would hurry up and start happening now. But that's as illogical as it is impossible. While there are definitely some parallels between Vulcan logic and Zen philosophy, Spock's advice is about as Zen as it comes. "One man cannot summon the future, but one man can change the present." If things aren't going the way one wants, looking to the future won't make change happen. Focusing on the moment, the now, is the only way to provoke the changes one wants to see in their life.

1 "Live long and prosper."

Of the many logical and wise things Spock said over his many years in Starfleet, the one he remains most remembered for are the words spoken with the Vulcan salute. Hand raised, middle and ring fingers parted in a V, it almost always accompanied the words, "Live long and prosper." Translated into Vulcan, the phrase, " dif-tor heh smusma ," is often coupled with the words, "peace and long life".

It wasn't Spock, or even Leonard Nimoy, who originally coined the phrase. The inspiration came from a number of places, including an old Egyptian blessing, the Bible, William Shakespeare, and Stephen Crane. These days, when people hear those words the first person who comes to mind is Spock, and given the impact his character has had on generations of Trekkies, chances are that isn't going to change anytime soon.

Star Trek Quotes: Leonard Nimoy’s Best Spock Quotes

Kirk loses his son but regains his best friend in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock . After being reborn, advancing to middle age and undergoing a Vulcan ceremony to retrieve his aura, Spock meets Kirk again, but doesn’t remember him. He asks why the admiral would risk the lives of his crew to save him, and Kirk turns Spock’s famous logic on its head: “The needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many.” There’s a pause, and Spock begins reciting lines from the end of Wrath of Khan before saying “Your name is Jim.” Cue one of the most endearing Trek moments ever as the rest of the crew runs to embrace Spock.

Leonard Nimoy died at 83 Friday , leaving behind a body of work spanning decades.

For nearly 50 years, Star Trek ’s Spock has been the most prominent philosopher in movies and television, mixing the logical mind of Sherlock Holmes and the inspirational messages of ancient proverbs.

In memory of Nimoy, let’s take a look back at 10 of Spock’s finest quotes.

10. “May I say that I have not thoroughly enjoyed serving with humans? I find their illogic and foolish emotions a constant irritant.” – Star Trek , season 3, episode 7 (“Day of the Dove,” 1968)

9. “Computers make excellent and efficient servants, but I have no wish to serve under them.” – Star Trek , season 2, episode 24 (“The Ultimate Computer,” 1968)

8. “Insufficient facts always invite danger.” – Star Trek , season 1, episode 24 (“Space Seed,” 1968)

7. “In critical moments, men sometimes see exactly what they wish to see.” – Star Trek , season 3, episode 9 (“The Tholian Web,” 1968)

6. “After a time, you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing after all as wanting. It is not logical, but is often true.” – Star Trek , season 2, episode 1 (“Amok Time,” 1968)

5. “Without followers, evil cannot spread.” – Star Trek , season 3, episode 5, (“And the Children Shall Lead,” 1968)

4. “When you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.” – Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country , 1991

3. “I could not deprive you of the revelation of all that you could accomplish together, of a friendship that will define you both in ways you cannot yet realize.” – Star Trek , 2009

Nimoy’s Spock spoke these words to a younger version of himself ( Zachary Quinto ), explaining why he asked young Kirk ( Chris Pine ) not to reveal his existence. It is among the most poignant summaries of the Kirk-Spock relationship in Trek lore.

2. “Live long and prosper.” – First spoken in Star Trek , season 2, episode 1 (“Amok Time,” 1968)

In the interview above, Nimoy revealed his Jewish heritage influenced the famous Vulcan benediction.

1. “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.” – Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , 1982

Spock shared this philosophy with Kirk earlier in the film, and later used it to explain why he sacrificed his own life to save the Enterprise. The line is possibly the most famous in Trek history.

Spock Quotes

The Most Memorable Star Trek Quotes from Spock

Spock is a character in the Star Trek series, played by late actor Leonard Nimoy. He first appeared in the Star Trek Series originally serving as the first officer of the starship USS Enterprise and science officer and later as the commanding officer of two iterations of this vessel.

Mr. Spock’s mixed human-Vulcan heritages act as a crucial plot element in numerous character’s appearances. He together with Dr. Leonard Bones McCoy and Captain James T. Kirk, is one of the three main characters in the Star Trek Series original and its films.

The 79 aired episodes of this series presented a positive view of life in the future since it traced the crew’s vision to explore and comprehend the strange new worlds and seek out new civilizations and new life where man had not gone before.

The original Star Trek series enjoyed incredible success and eventually launched an animation series between 1973-1975 and many spin-off television series. Mr. Spock is perfect for the character of half-human, half-alien, and the commander of the spacecraft USS enterprise. Below are his often dead-pan quotes loved by  Star Trek fans everywhere.

“Humans do have an amazing capacity for believing what they choose and excluding that which is painful.”– Spock

“When you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.”– Spock

“I’m frequently appalled by the low regard you Earthmen have for life.”– Spock

“After a time, you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing after all as wanting. It is not logical, but is often true.”– Spock

Star Trek: Spock's Best Quotes Not From The Original Series

Star Trek fans, both new and old, may remember some of these Spock quotes.

  • Spock's line, "I Have Been And Always Shall Be Your Friend," in Star Trek 2: The Wrath Of Khan, reflects the close bond between Spock and Kirk.
  • In Star Trek: The Original Series - Season 1, Episode 17, "Squire Of Gothos," Spock objects to intellect without discipline and power without constructive purpose.
  • Spock's line, "We Have Only Now," in Star Trek: Discovery Season 2, Episode 11, "Perpetual Infinity," brings a grounded perspective amidst the show's time-travel and futuristic elements.

The first Star Trek episodes aired in 1966, and Spock was there from the very beginning. Spock was one of the few characters that survived the transition from pilot to regular show when the entire cast was either rotated into another role or cut out completely for the official start of Season One.

Star Trek: Spock's Best Friends, Ranked

Repository of Vulcan wisdom, theme character, and best friend to James Kirk, Spock has been memed, parodied, and quoted at various times. There are whole pages of his memorable lines throughout the decades and the actors who have played him, and every single one of them are fascinating.

"I Have Been And Always Shall Be Your Friend."

Star trek 2: the wrath of khan (1982).

Lest it be forgotten that some of the earliest examples of "shipping," now a common practice, took place between the two main characters of the classic Star Trek show. This emotional scene at the end of The Wrath Of Khan at least confirmed that the two were very close friends.

This line returns in the next movie, not only when Sarek joins minds with Kirk in an early scene but also at the end, repeated by Spock upon his return. It wasn't just the repetition that fused this quote into the minds of the movie-going public but also its tear-jerking sincerity.

"We Have Only Now."

Star trek: discovery season 2, episode 11 "perpetual infinity" (2019).

When modern shows include Spock as a character, it's often as his younger self, partly because that was a time in his life when the movies or vintage shows never addressed in detail. His adventures with Michael Burnham remain classified in later years, a neat explanation as to why they were never discussed during his years on the Enterprise.

15 Spock Memes Only True Star Trek Fans Will Understand

This quote is memorable because of how ironic it is to appear in an episode entitled "Perpetual Infinity." It's a spin on the axiom "no time like the present" in a situation where nothing exists but the present, forever. In a show that includes spore drives, wormholes, and red angels from the future, Spock grounds the action and adventure with this simple truth.

"Logic Is The Beginning Of Wisdom...Not The End."

Star trek 6: the undiscovered country (1991).

Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country was the last feature film to include the cast from The Original Series . The plot of Star Trek 6 is more about political intrigue than fighting, and reflects some of the real-world events of the early 1990s, primarily the fall of the Soviet Union.

Star Trek: Spock's Biggest Mistakes & Failures

The plot of the movie starts with the impending destruction of the Klingon homeworld. In this scene, Spock is conversing with a fellow Vulcan and his favorite student, Valeris, and they seem to be on opposing sides of the important political issue of the day. Should Klingons be allowed to settle among the same races that they were trying to conquer only months ago? Valeris suggests the solution should be determined by logical means alone and Spock politely disagrees with this quote.

"Council, Ministers, I Must Decline."

Star trek (2009).

Star Trek (2009) was a new take on the younger days of the TOS characters, but this time in an alternate reality, although some of the canon events are the same. The moment when Spock refuses admission to the Vulcan Science Academy and opts to join Starfleet instead is one of the pivotal moments of the movie, and it was the first time this moment appeared on film after being referenced on several occasions.

The incident was serious enough to estrange Spock from his father for several years, according to the lore of the vintage series, and the way it's played out in the Kelvin Universe, it's easy to see why. Zachary Quinto expresses Spock's defiance by keeping it all inside, but at the same time expresses exactly how he feels, and caps it off with a sarcastic farewell - "Live long and prosper."

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

Leonard Nimoy, best known for his role as Mr. Spock on the iconic classic sci-fi series Star Trek , truly did "live long and prosper." The prolific, multi-talented actor, director, photographer, singer and poet passed away this morning at his Los Angeles home. He died of complications from end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He was 83.

The Boston-born entertainer and philanthropist -- who garnered an active and devoted fan base worldwide for his stoic portrayal of officer Spock on TV starting in the ' 60s and in several subsequent Star Trek movies -- was also revered for his commitment to furthering several charitable causes .

During a vibrant, accomplished acting career that spanned a year shy of six and a half decades on the stage and screen, Nimoy remained active in supporting the American Cancer Society, the American Foundation for Equal Rights, Beit T'Shuvah and March of Dimes. In 2003, Nimoy and his second wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, cousin of film director Michael Bay, launched The Nimoy Foundation , a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting visual artists. He was also a proponent of same-sex marriage and of embracing all body sizes and types, having published The Full Body Project (Five Ties Publishing, 2007) . The book features artful photographs of nude full-bodied women in repose that he himself snapped.

Nimoy, a first-generation American fluent in Yiddish, whose parents were Jewish immigrants from the Ukraine, came to reject, and then later embrace his fame for playing a half-human, half-alien "Vulcan." The Army veteran and published author eventually made a comeback as the unflaggingly rational, sharp-eared hybrid in several top-grossing recent Star Trek movies.

In remembrance of Nimoy's indelible imprint on the entertainment industry, his passion for the arts and his crusade for equal rights for all, here are 10 of his most memorable quotes, both as the split finger-saluting Spock and as himself:

4. "You know, for a long time I have been of the opinion that artists don't necessarily know what they're doing. You don't necessarily know what kind of universal concept you're tapping into." — Leonard Nimoy

Spock Quotes: 10 Best Leonard Nimoy Sayings As 'Star Trek' Vulcan

Abigail Elise

Leonard Nimoy, the actor who portrayed Spock in the “Star Trek” television series, passed away at 83 on Friday. The popular Boston-born poet, singer, photographer and film director died from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which he believed was the result of his cigarette smoking habit. Nimoy had quit three decades ago.

Nimoy’s depiction of Spock was his most iconic role. The actor portrayed the half-human, half-Vulcan character flawlessly, effectively bringing logic and depth to the part. Nimoy’s Spock was wise, intelligent and insightful, and he often said brilliant things. Check out our list of some of Spock’s best quotes:

“I’ve never understood the female capacity to avoid a direct answer to any question.” – “This Side of Paradise,” 1967

“If there are self-made purgatories, then we all have to live in them. Mine can be no worse than someone else's.” – “This Side of Paradise,” 1967

“After a time, you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing after all as wanting. It is not logical, but it is often true.” – “Amok Time,” 1967

“Speed is essential.” – “Who Mourns for Adonais?” 1967

“May I say that I have not thoroughly enjoyed serving with humans? I find their illogic and foolish emotions a constant irritant.” – “Day of the Dove,” 1968

"You Earth people glorify organized violence for 40 centuries, but you imprison those who employ it privately.” – “Dagger of the Mind,” 1966

“Evil does seek to maintain power by suppressing the truth.” – “And the Children Shall Lead,” 1968

“No one can guarantee the actions of another.” – “Day of the Dove,” 1968

“I have noted that the healthy release of emotion is frequently very unhealthy for those closest to you.” – “Plato’s Stepchildren,” 1968

“We must acknowledge once and for all that the purpose of diplomacy is to prolong a crisis.” – “The Mark of Gideon,” 1969

Spock's Brain

Spock's Brain

  • Kara : Brain and brain! What is *brain*? It is Controller, is it not?
  • Dr. McCoy : Yes. Yes, in a way, it is. The human brain controls the individual's functions.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : [ with dawning realization ] Bones... Scotty... Spock's... brain... controls.
  • Dr. McCoy : I'll never live this down - this Vulcan is telling *me* how to operate.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : [ regarding Spock ] You've got him on complete life support. Was he dead?
  • Dr. McCoy : He was worse than dead.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : What do you mean?
  • Dr. McCoy : Jim...
  • Captain James T. Kirk : Come on, Bones, what's the mystery?
  • Dr. McCoy : His brain is gone.
  • [ repeated line ]
  • Captain James T. Kirk : What have you done with Spock's brain?
  • Uhura : What would they want with Mr. Spock's brain? What use is it? WHY do they want it?
  • Luma : You are not Eymorg, you are not Morg. What are you?
  • Dr. McCoy : Jim - it's no use. You'll get nothing out of that one. Hers is the mind of a child.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : We came to put you back. Where are you?
  • Mr. Spock : [ voice ] Back where?
  • Captain James T. Kirk : Back into your body. We brought it along with us.
  • Mr. Spock : [ voice ] Thoughtful, Captain, but probably impractical. While I might trust the Doctor to remove a splinter, or lance a boil, I do not believe he has the knowledge to restore a brain.
  • [ last lines ]
  • [ McCoy has restored Spock's brain ]
  • Captain James T. Kirk : How do you feel, Spock?
  • Mr. Spock : On the whole, Captain, I believe I am quite fit. It's fascinating. A remarkable example of a retrograde civilization. At the peak, advanced beyond any of our capabilities, and now operating at this primitive level which you saw. And it all began thousands of years ago, when a glacial age reoccurred. You see, this underground complex was developed for the women. The men remained above, and a male-female schism took place. A fascinating cultural development of a kind which has...
  • Dr. McCoy : I knew it was wrong. I shouldn't have done it.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : What's that?
  • Dr. McCoy : I should have never reconnected his mouth.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : Well, we took the risk, Doctor.
  • Mr. Spock : [ unfazed by the interruption ] As I was saying, a fascinating cultural development of the kind which hasn't been seen in ages. The last such occurrence took place on old Earth, when the Romans were warring...
  • [ Kirk, McCoy and Scotty are in an elevator that descends abruptly ]
  • Dr. McCoy : Call Chekov and tell him to send my stomach down!
  • Dr. McCoy : Vulcan physiology limits what I can do. Spock's body is much more dependent on that tremendous brain for life support.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : Then we'll have to take him with us.
  • Dr. McCoy : Take him... take him where?
  • Captain James T. Kirk : In search of his brain, Doctor.
  • Dr. McCoy : Where are you going to look for Spock's brain? How're you gonna find it?
  • Captain James T. Kirk : I'll find it.
  • Dr. McCoy : Even if you do, I can't restore it. I don't have the medical technique.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : It was taken out. It can be put back in.
  • Dr. McCoy : But I don't know how!
  • Captain James T. Kirk : The thief that took it has the knowledge. I'll FORCE it out of her!
  • Captain James T. Kirk : Show us the three Class M planets, Mr. Chekov.
  • Chekov : The one on the left, number 3, it rates letter B on the industrial scale.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : Earth equivalent approximately... 1485.
  • Chekov : Yes, sir. Second planet Class M, number 4, rates letter G.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : The year 2030.
  • Sulu : But that ship, Captain, either was many years ahead of us, or it was the most incredible design fluke in history.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : Third Class M planet, Mr. Chekov?
  • Chekov : Number 6. No sign of industrial development. At last report, in a glacial age. Sapient life plentiful, but on a most primitive level.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : Now, as I understand it, Mr. Chekov, there are three Class M planets...
  • Chekov : Yes, sir.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : ...not one of which is capable of launching an interstellar flight...
  • Chekov : No, sir.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : ...yet one of them accomplished it.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : Thank you, Mr. Chekov.
  • Creature : You... are not the Others?
  • Captain James T. Kirk : No. We come from a far place. We are men.
  • Creature : Men?
  • Captain James T. Kirk : Like yourselves.
  • Creature : You are small. Like the Others.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : Who are the Others?
  • Creature : The givers of pain... and delight.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : A dead and buried city... on a planet in a glacial age.
  • Chekov : And the male humanoid who doesn't know the meaning of the word "female".
  • Scott : "Pain and delight", he said up above.
  • Dr. McCoy : I'm sure you noticed the 'delight'-aspect of this place.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : Yes, I certainly did notice those delightful aspects.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : This fellow is keeping us from our property.
  • Scott : Well, isn't there a way to correct that situation?
  • Captain James T. Kirk : I certainly think that science might provide an answer.
  • Dr. McCoy : It does, Captain.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : Agreed, Doctor.
  • [ they take on the guards in a surprise attack ]
  • Mr. Spock : [ voice ] Captain, there is a definite pleasurable experience connected with the hearing of your voice.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : Spock, you're in a black box tied in with light rays into a complex control panel.
  • Mr. Spock : [ voice ] Fascinating.
  • Kara : You must not take the Controller away. We will all die! The Controller is young and, and powerful. Perfect!
  • Mr. Spock : [ voice ] How very flattering.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : You'll be without your Controller for the first time; but... you'll be much better off, I think.
  • Kara : We will die!
  • Captain James T. Kirk : No. You'll live, and develop, as you should have. All this shouldn't have been done for you. Now the women here below and the men here above will control together.
  • Kara : They will not help us without the pain.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : There are other ways. You'll discover them.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : [ Kirk and a landing party have beamed down to a planet in search of Spock's brain ] Life form readings, Mr. Spock? -
  • [ realizes his mistake ]
  • Captain James T. Kirk : - Mr. Scott?
  • Dr. McCoy : His body lives, the autonomic functions continue. But there is no mind.
  • Sulu : That ship, Captain, either was many years ahead of us, or it was the most incredible design fluke in history.
  • Sulu : Ship's Log, Lieutenant Sulu recording. I am holding the Enterprise in orbit about planet Sigma Draconis VII. Captain Kirk's hunch that Spock's brain is on this planet appears to be correct. Ensign Chekov remains on the surface, to act as liaison between the Captain and the Enterprise.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : [ after the fight ] Science will triumph.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : From the very first, I appreciated your ability.
  • Kara : Good, Captain Kirk. Then you will also appreciate that without the Teacher, I would not have the knowledge to use that which you have thoughtfully provided.
  • [ she suddenly produces a phaser and aims it at Kirk ]
  • Scott : That phaser is set to kill.
  • Dr. McCoy : [ after acquiring knowledge from the Teacher ] Of course. Of course. A child could do it. A child could do it.
  • Dr. McCoy : I'm trying to thread a needle with a sledgehammer.
  • Scott : Captain, that power we picked up above - we're gettin' closer.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : A lot of it?
  • Scott : Enough to push this planet out of orbit.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : What source?
  • Scott : Either a nuclear pile a hundred miles across or...
  • Captain James T. Kirk : Or what?
  • Scott : Ion power.
  • Mr. Spock : [ voice ] I seem to have a body which stretches into infinity.
  • Scott : Body? Why, ya have *none*.
  • Mr. Spock : Then, what am I?
  • Dr. McCoy : You are a disembodied brain.
  • Mr. Spock : Fascinating. It could explain much, Doctor. My medulla oblongata is hard at work apparently breathing, apparently pumping blood, apparently maintaining a normal physiologic temperature.
  • Creature : Your words say nothing.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : No one may kill a man! Not for any purpose. It cannot be condoned.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : Readout, Mr. Chekov.
  • Chekov : No structures, Captain. No mechanized objects that I can read, no surface consumption, no generation of energy. Atmosphere is perfectly all right, of course. Temperature, a high maximum of 40 - livable.
  • Captain James T. Kirk : [ regarding Chekov ] You have a thick skin.

Star Trek: Leonard "Bones" McCoy's 10 Best Quotes

"Bones" McCoy, Chief Medical Officer aboard the USS Enterprise, has some of the funniest, thought-provoking one-liners in the Star Trek franchise.

In 1966, DeForest Kelley embarked on a three-year journey aboard the starship Enterprise as Star Trek 's Leonard McCoy, one of the most iconic characters in the franchise. Over the course of three seasons and 79 episodes, "Bones" gifted audiences with some fantastic, memorable quotes. While McCoy's popularity is often overshadowed by Kirk and Spock, there's no denying that the grumpy doctor was essential in making the trio a team like no other.

Reliable and experienced, McCoy managed to keep his crewmates in top shape and accompany his commanding officer on dangerous missions at the same time, imparting his wit and wisdom whenever there was trouble on the horizon.

10 "In All The Universe, Three Million Galaxies Like This, And In All Of That... And Perhaps More... Only One Of Each Of Us."

One of Kirk's closest friends and colleagues, McCoy often acted as the captain's advisor and sounding board during the Enterprise's most desperate times. When the starship found itself up against a Romulan warship during the celebrated episode "Balance of Terror," McCoy tried to encourage Kirk while the latter debated how to proceed.

After Kirk confessed he felt burdened by his current responsibility, McCoy wisely reminded him that in the vastness of the galaxy there was only one James T. Kirk, and he should make sure not to destroy him.

9 "Monsters Come In Many Forms. Do You Know The Greatest Monster Of Them All? Guilt."

As the Enterprise's Chief Medical Officer, McCoy was in charge of assessing the crew's physical and mental health, sometimes having to take drastic measures to save his crewmates from themselves. In "Obsession," Kirk was consumed by his desire to destroy a strange, murderous cloud that he had failed to eradicate in his youth, causing the rest of his crew to perish.

McCoy noticed that Kirk's obsession seemed to be rooted in his guilty conscience, calling it the "greatest monster of all" before questioning whether Kirk was fit to stay in command.

8 "A Cage Is A Cage, Jim."

Despite holding Kirk in great esteem, McCoy was never shy to contradict him and give him a different perspective to consider. In "Dagger of the Mind," after Kirk expressed his interest in Dr. Tristan Adams—a renowned psychologist who had revolutionized prisons into hospitals—McCoy carefully reminded him that things may have changed, but a cage was still a cage.

Related: 10 Star Trek Actors Who Played More Than One Role

Ultimately, McCoy was proven right when Dr. Van Gelder, one of Adams's associates, infiltrated the Enterprise and revealed the horrors Adams constantly inflicted on the inmates.

7 "The Chain Of Command Is Often A Noose."

In "The Conscience of the King," Kirk suspected one of the Shakespearean actors aboard the Enterprise might actually be Kodos, the ex-governor of Tarsus IV who had mass-murdered almost his entire colony. As Kirk endeavored to investigate and protect his crew, his strange actions alerted Spock and led him to consult with McCoy.

When asked about Kirk's decision to send Lieutenant Riley back to engineering, a surprising choice given he'd just been transferred, McCoy simply replied that the chain of command was usually a noose and Kirk must have had his reasons for doing so. McCoy often spoke his mind, but he also respected the hierarchy of the Enterprise.

6 "Compassion. That's The One Thing No Machine Ever Had. Maybe It's The One Thing That Keeps Men Ahead Of Them."

Created during the technological boom of the 1960s, Star Trek often discussed the merits and disadvantages of computers in relation to mankind. In episode 53, "The Ultimate Computer," Kirk was temporarily replaced by an uber computer that seemed capable of taking over his role as captain.

After the computer attacked fellow Starfleet ships and shut itself down, McCoy explained that despite its high-tech, it lacked the compassion that kept humanity ahead of any machine. Star Trek was equally of its era and ahead if its time. It was thought-provoking, and "Bones" provided many memorable quotes that forced the viewers to stop and wonder.

5 "I'm Trying To Thank You, You Pointed-Eared Hobgoblin!"

Despite bickering more often than not, McCoy and Spock had absolute respect for one another as Kirk's friends and as two of Starfleet's finest . When Spock saved McCoy from certain death at the hands of a gladiator in "Bread and Circuses," the doctor struggled to thank him as Spock inspects their holding cell.

Various attempts later, McCoy couldn't take more of Spock's logical responses and called him a "pointed-eared hobgoblin." He then tried to break through Spock's aloof exterior by appealing to his humanity, suggesting that Spock might be more afraid of "living" than he let on.

4 "If You Treat Her Like A Lady, She'll Always Bring You Home."

Almost twenty years since the cancellation of The Original Series, Star Trek returned to the small screen with The New Generation in the late 1980s. DeForest Kelley made a cameo appearance in the new series' first episode, "Encounter at Farpoint," as a symbolic passing of the baton for the brand-new crew of the Enterprise.

Related: Live Long & Prosper: 10 Best Quotes From Star Trek's Spock

As an Admiral, a much older McCoy toured the Enterprise-D alongside Data, comparing the android's speech patterns and lack of emotion to a Vulcan's. Just before leaving, McCoy advised Data to treat the Enterprise "like a lady" and she'll always bring the crew home.

3 "The Release Of Emotions, Mr. Spock, Is What Keeps Us Healthy—Emotionally Healthy, That Is."

In "Plato's Stepchildren," the Enterprise found itself up against a race of psychic aliens who followed Plato's teachings. Shortly after being captured by them, Spock was forced to let go of his Vulcan stoicism when he was psychically tortured to show extreme emotions.

Spock was understandably humiliated by the display. To appease him, McCoy mentioned that releasing emotions is what keeps people emotionally healthy, but Spock simply replied that, in his experience, doing so always ends up being 'unhealthy' for those closest to him.

2 "A Man Who Holds That Much Power, Even With The Best Intentions, Just Can't Resist The Urge To Play God."

Since joining the Enterprise, McCoy visited dozens of civilizations ruled by unjust leaders who were corrupted by their own greed. He encountered one of them in "Patterns of Force" when the Enterprise was sent on a rescue mission to the planet Ekos. To the crew's complete shock, its society had modeled itself after Nazi Germany and was led by the man they'd been sent to recover, John Gill.

RELATED: 10 Best Uhura Moments In Star Trek, Ranked

Later in the episode, McCoy explained that, despite Gill's best intentions to organize the Ekosians' chaotic civilization, he eventually succumbed to his absolute power because he couldn't resist the urge to play god.

1 "I'm A Doctor, Not An Engineer!"

McCoy's well-known catchphrase had many variations, but none was as iconic as the one he uttered in the emblematic "Mirror, Mirror" . When Kirk, McCoy, Uhura, and Scotty accidentally switched places with their counterparts from a parallel universe, they tried to find a way back home without revealing themselves as impostors.

Their only option was to tamper with the transporter and beam back to their reality, so Scotty requested some help from McCoy. The doctor reminded them of his profession, specifically denying his expertise in engineering, but helped Scotty and his crew anyway.

Star Trek: 5 Actors Who Almost Played Spock Instead Of Leonard Nimoy

E ven to the uninitiated, Leonard Nimoy's Spock has long served as the face of the "Star Trek" franchise. Reflecting on the iconic character while speaking with  Variety  about  "Strange New Worlds," the most recent Spock actor, Ethan Peck , recalled his own experience flashing the Vulcan's signature hand sign on his grade school playground as a kid. "When I thought of 'Star Trek,' I thought of Spock. And now I'm him," the actor mused. "It's crazy."

Like Zachary Quinto before him, Peck landed the gig in part because of his passable resemblance to Nimoy's O.G. Vulcan. Despite creator Gene Roddenberry's conviction that the actor would be perfect for the role, he was one of a handful of aspiring Vulcans in the running. According to William Shatner's account in the memoir "Star Trek Memories,"  NBC required Roddenberry to consider a handful of other actors for the role before landing on Nimoy. And judging by the lineup, Captain Kirk's favorite bromance could have looked a lot different.

Actors who were seriously considered for -- or even offered -- the role include character actor Rex Holman ("Escape to Witch Mountain"), Victor Lundin (Gene from "The Theory of Everything"), Michael Dunn ("The Wild, Wild West" TV series),  Martin Landau, whose many well-known roles include Bela Lugosi in "Ed Wood,"  and even DeForest Kelley, who ended up playing the ship's doctor, Leonard "Bones" McCoy.

Roddenberry Wanted Nimoy, But NBC Wanted Someone Else

As recounted in  Marc Cushman's book, "These Are the Voyages: TOS, Season One," Spock had been on Gene Roddenberry's mind early in the "Star Trek" pilot creation process. For suggestions on casting the ship's first officer, he had turned to Gary Lockwood, who played the lead in Roddenberry's 1963 TV military drama series "The Lieutenant." When the actor recommended Roddenberry cast someone "who was really good, but ... had kind of a strange face," Majel Barrett — Roddenberry's wife and then-future Trek legend — immediately reminded him of Nimoy.

But NBC had their own guy in mind to play the Vulcan — namely, Martin Landau. By the time he was offered the role of Spock, Landau had racked up a number of TV and film roles, including appearances on "The Twilight Zone," "Wagon Train," "Gunsmoke," and "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour." Around the same time the actor was offered the role of Spock, he had been up for a role in the spy series "Mission Impossible" as master of disguise Rollin Hand.

For Landau, turning down the space series was a no-brainer. In 1986, the actor told  Starlog,  "I can't play wooden. It's the antithesis of why I became an actor," adding that "newscasters are more emotional than Spock." Instead, he went for the spy gig — a role that earned him a Golden Globe in 1968.

DeForest Kelley Turned Down The Role

Dishing in Allan Asherman's  "The Star Trek Interview Book,"  Roddenberry said Michael Dunn, a 3' 10" actor whose best-known role was as Dr. Miguelito Loveless on "The Wild, Wild West," was also considered for the part. "I wanted Spock to look different and be different, and yes, to make a statement about being an outsider looking in," Roddenberry explained. Ultimately, the franchise creator felt the role needed someone more conventionally attractive to a weekly TV audience, concluding, "It was the right choice for the time." Dunn did, however, end up making an appearance on "Star Trek" in one of the series' most notorious episodes, "Plato's Stepchildren."

Victor Lundin, who played one of the first Klingons in "Star Trek" in "Errand of Mercy," also auditioned for Spock. In 2001, he told the  Chicago Reader,  "If you look at my ears you can see why. I would've saved them millions in makeup." According to Lundin, he was just too much of a beefcake to play the Vulcan at the time, noting, "I was very buff in those days." Also considered for the role was Rex Holman, who would finally get his turn with the franchise in "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier."

But for many Trekkies, the most surprising Spock revelation is that DeForest Kelley read for the role as the Enterprise's Vulcan science officer. Kelley detailed his near-Spock experience in  "From Sawdust to Stardust: The Biography of DeForest Kelley, Star Trek's Dr. McCoy."  Recalling a lunch meeting with Roddenberry, Kelley recounted, "He described this character, this alien with the ears, and he asked me how I felt about playing it." However , the idea of playing a Vulcan didn't sit well with him. "No, Gene, really, I don't want to do it," he recalled, answering in a tone similar to that of his  sarcastic Enterprise doctor, Bones .

The most misquoted star wars lines.

While Star Wars has countless very quotable lines throughout its movies and TV shows, several of the most popular quotes are frequently misspoken.

  • Star Wars has several iconic lines that are often misquoted.
  • Misquoting Obi-Wan's many excellent lines alters the intent behind them, reflecting a different meaning.
  • Darth Vader's most quoted line is also his most misquoted.

Star Wars has had many truly incredible lines over the years, but these 10 are frequently misquoted. Star Wars movies and TV shows have delivered innumerable iconic lines that have made their way into broader popular culture for decades. While several excellent quotes do come from the earliest Star Wars movies, plenty of the franchise's profound lines span the full Star Wars timeline , including more recent additions to Star Wars TV shows .

However, even some of Star Wars' best movies have lines that frequently get misquoted. In fact, even among the best Star Wars quotes , several lines are often misspoken. Of all the Star Wars quotes that tend to get mixed up, these 10 are the most significant.

The 10 Most Iconic Star Wars Quotes From A New Hope

10 "we are still flying half a ship", obi-wan kenobi in star wars: episode iii - revenge of the sith, obi-wan kenobi.

In Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith , Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi believe they are rescuing Chancellor Palpatine from General Grievous and Count Dooku. In reality, of course, this was all yet another ploy by Palpatine to convincingly act as the innocent Senate leader forced to participate in a war rather than a Sith Lord orchestrating it. While they are successful in this rescue, it requires them to land a ship that is quite literally falling apart.

In a classically cheeky tone, Obi-Wan says, "Don't worry; we are still flying half a ship." Because it is such a quintessential Obi-Wan line, this is frequently quoted. However, it often gets repeated as "We still have half a ship." Although a small difference, this misquote detracts a bit somewhat from Obi-Wan's style, which is at once polite and sarcastic.

9 "So This Is How Liberty Dies... With Thunderous Applause"

Padmé amidala in star wars: episode iii - revenge of the sith, padmé amidala.

Padmé Amidala's grave commentary on the implications of Palpatine's declaration that he was establishing an Empire in Revenge of the Sith has become famous within the Star Wars franchise. As she and Bail Organa sit and listen to Palpatine explain his version of what happened with the Jedi and announce his claim to an Imperial throne, Padmé says, "So this is how liberty dies. With thunderous applause." Interestingly, many say they distinctly remember the language being "This is how democracy dies."

Perhaps because of this Mandela effect, the line is often misquoted using the word democracy rather than liberty. This is a particularly fascinating switch because the words, although related, do imply something slightly different. While democracy seems to be more of a political assessment, liberty seems to better represent the loss of general freedom. Ultimately, this choice instead means that Padmé accurately predicted what was to come with the Empire .

10 Star Wars Quotes That Prove Padmé Amidala Is The Franchise's Smartest Character

8 "it's over, anakin. i have the high ground".

The dialogue between Obi-Wan and Anakin in Revenge of the Sith during their battle on Mustafar has become some of the best-known dialogue in the entire franchise. From Anakin's dramatic speech about his recent accomplishments for his new Empire to Obi-Wan making using an absolute to say only Sith use absolutes, the scenes are filled with fan-favorite lines. However, one of the most treasured among those lines is often misspoken.

Although the warning that Obi-Wan gives to Anakin about not trying to jump is frequently repeated simply as "I have the high ground, Anakin," the true line is, "It's over, Anakin. I have the high ground." Again, while this may seem small and insignificant, it actually does carry a different meaning. By telling Anakin that the fight was over, Obi-Wan was, in a sense, trying to avoid killing him. Although that is essentially what he was sent there by Yoda to do, he wanted to give Anakin a way out of death.

By telling Anakin that the fight was over, Obi-Wan was, in a sense, trying to avoid killing him.

7 "Wherever I Go, He Goes"

Din djarin in the mandalorian.

The relationship between Din Djarin and Grogu throughout The Mandalorian has certainly captured hearts. Although Grogu was very much a mystery at first, audiences were compelled by Din Djarin's unwavering commitment to protect him. Now, following The Mandalorian season 3 ending , this has only become even better, with Din Djarin formally adopting Grogu.

However, one of the sweetest lines between Din Djarin and Grogu is often slightly misquoted. In The Mandalorian , Din Djarin says, "Wherever I go, he goes." Typically, this line is slightly misspoken as "Where he goes, I go." This is yet another interesting comparison because, in this case, the misquote seemingly makes more sense. Much of The Mandalorian is Din Djarin trying to keep Grogu safe and in his care, so it would arguably make more sense for Din Djarin to phrase it that way, implying that he follows Grogu.

Everything We Know About The Mandalorian & Grogu Movie

6 "if you strike me down, i shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine", obi-wan kenobi in a new hope.

Yet another Obi-Wan line that gets slightly misquoted is one of Sir Alec Guinness' most iconic in the role. In Obi-Wan's fight with Darth Vader in A New Hope , Obi-Wan seems completely unafraid. In the face of possible death, he simply says, "If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine."

This quote is frequently instead stated as, "Strike me down, and I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine." Again, part of what the misspoken line loses is Obi-Wan's unique way of speaking, which is often more eloquent. However, this alteration also changes the meaning slightly. In the correct version in A New Hope , Obi-Wan's language again becomes more like a warning to Anakin/Darth Vader of what will happen if he makes the wrong choice. In the misquote, it seems nearly as though Obi-Wan is goading Vader.

5 "Shut Down All The Garbage Mashers!"

Luke skywalker in a new hope, luke skywalker.

One of the funniest Star Wars lines that gets misquoted occurs in A New Hope as Luke desperately attempts to get C-3PO to turn off the trash compactors. At that moment, Luke, Princess Leia, and Han Solo are all about to be crushed to death while on the Death Star. The scene, widely known as the trash compactor scene, is precisely where the mix-up stems from. Remarkably, in the scene, Luke doesn't ask for C-3PO to turn off the trash compactors, nor does he otherwise say trash compactor.

Instead, Luke refers to the machines they are trapped inside as "garbage mashers." This is a shocking difference, particularly because that term isn't the one that most would think of regarding either that Star Wars scene in particular or the real-life equivalent. Perhaps precisely for that reason, this scene is often misquoted to reflect the term trash compactor rather than garbage masher.

4 "The Force Will Be With You, Always"

Because Obi-Wan Kenobi is so wise and powerful in A New Hope and because he introduces Luke (and, by extension, the audience) to the Force, he is often attributed with the franchise's first "May the Force be with you." However, in A New Hope , Obi-Wan never says those words. What he actually says to Luke is "The Force will be with you, always."

Of course, since then, not only has Obi-Wan said the line countless times, but also, so have myriad other Star Wars characters. In fact, this line has become so prominent in the franchise that it became the origin of Star Wars Day, May the 4th. Now, "May the Force be with you" is a standard salutation. It remains the case nevertheless, though, that Obi-Wan cannot be credited with the first use of the phrase in Star Wars .

3 "I Have A Very Bad Feeling About This"

Very similar to Obi-Wan's mistaken credit with "May the Force be with you," Luke Skywalker is often identified as the first Star Wars character to say "I've got a bad feeling about this." For all intents and purposes, this is true. In A New Hope , Han Solo, Chewbacca, Luke, and Obi-Wan approach the Death Star. When Obi-Wan explains that what they are seeing is not a moon but is instead a space station, Luke says, "I have a very bad feeling about this."

This is another example of a very minor shift between the misquote and the actual quote, but given that "I've got a bad feeling about this" is the most quoted and is connected with this moment in A New Hope , this does reflect a slight error. In truth, it's Han who gives that exact expression later in the movie. Now, many variations have been introduced, most recently in Ahsoka , which abbreviated the phrase to just, "I have a bad feeling."

2 "I'd Just As Soon Kiss A Wookiee"

Princess leia in the empire strikes back, leia organa.

Han and Leia's banter with one another has become a very beloved part of the original Star Wars trilogy, particularly in The Empire Strikes Back . As the two developed more romantic feelings, their antagonism toward one another only grew. One of the most referenced lines amid these spats is Leia's assertion, "I'd just as soon kiss a Wookiee," following Han's insinuation that Leia would like to kiss him.

This quip is also typically shortened, often to "I'd rather kiss a Wookiee." This alteration makes sense given it's quicker and easier to say. However, like Obi-Wan's, the longer, more poetic versions of Leia's snarky remarks give them some of their weight . While she took quite a few jabs throughout the original trilogy, they were always delivered with true wit, and the actual quote from The Empire Strikes Back is no exception.

1 "No, I Am Your Father"

Darth vader in the empire strikes back, anakin skywalker/darth vader.

Of course, the biggest misquote of them all is Darth Vader's reveal that he is Luke's father. Throughout pop culture, the line has been repeated as "Luke, I am your father." However, the actual line is "No. I am your father." This is another funny one in that some will swear to the original being Luke rather than "no," another clear Mandela effect.

Given that this is one of the biggest plot twists in Star Wars , if not in all of cinema history, it's a bit surprising that it's misspoken so frequently. However, this iconic line from The Empire Strikes Back is just one of many examples of Star Wars lines that often get misquoted. All in all, these 10 examples reflect some of the most prominent misquotes of Star Wars lines, the biggest inarguably being the inclusion of Luke's name in Darth Vader's incredible reveal that Luke is his son.
