Star Trek: Armada Borg assimilation fun thrill in contract to Picard season 2 Borg Queen Agnes P Jurati

Forget Picard’s New Borg, Star Trek: Armada Made Assimilation a Thrill

Image of Chris McMullen

Star Trek: Picard season 2 may have done something a little different with the Borg , but as Star Trek: Armada proves, you can’t beat a bit of good old-fashioned assimilation.

It might not seem like fun when you’re on the receiving end, but this turn-of-the-millennium RTS is so much better when you’re the Borg. I’m not talking about the single-player campaign so much, although it’s fun to conquer Earth, even if the game does undo it almost immediately after.

No, I’m referring to Star Trek: Armada ’s skirmish / multiplayer mode. As the Borg, you can conquer the Federation, and no one’s there to tell you it’s not canon. Assimilating your foes is the perfect way to rub it in. Why? Because instead of a pile of space debris, your enemy’s ship — or ships — now serve you and can be tasked with annihilating their former comrades.

You do have to work your way up to it, constructing the various tech nodes and manufacturing stations that let you build a Borg Cube or four. They’re not as massive as they are in the series, presumably for the sake of balance, but just watching them glide through space always makes me grin.

Then the assimilation starts. Lock a cube’s tractor beam onto a ship and a sinister green beam grabs the vessel. Provided the vessel doesn’t break away or annihilate you first, it’ll eventually be in your power.

Star Trek: Armada Borg assimilation fun thrill in contract to Picard season 2 Borg Queen Agnes P Jurati

What’s especially pleasing is that it’s the same ship; it doesn’t magically morph into another Borg cube. Instead, parts of it are covered in Borg technology, just enough to underline your victory.

So if it’s a Galaxy-class ship like the Enterprise , (Each in-game ship has a name.) it joins your, er, armada, assimilated crew and all. Admittedly, I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of corrupting former enemies — Dungeon Keeper , for example, lets you enslave former enemies. Is that a little messed up? Yes. Am I a terrible person? Also yes.

Even before you do anything with them, it’s satisfying to watch the vessel just sitting there. Even if you’ve not bagged the Enterprise , rather something smaller, it’ll still have you grinning. And then, when you ask an assimilated vessel to move, it’s a Borg voice that emanates from its corrupted hull.

Finally, you get to experience the mustache-twirling joy of sending those same Borgified ships back to your enemy. The last time I played Star Trek: Armada , I chose a map with wormholes, and I’m so very glad I did.

Every now and then a small Federation ship would swing by, taking the long way round. Once I’d remembered I could order my Borg not to blow it up and manually assimilated it, I got into the habit of sending them back through the wormhole. Computer opponents may not get frightened, but in my head, they were shaking in terror as their former friends paid them a visit, eyepieces and egg whisks attached. And if your Borgified vessel is destroyed — well, it’s not like it cost you anything to build.

Star Trek: Armada Borg assimilation fun thrill in contract to Picard season 2 Borg Queen Agnes P Jurati

If you’re thinking that assimilating enemies seems like a sure-fire way to steamroller your enemies, there’s a catch, something that stops the Borg from being too overpowered. Assimilation is slower than just blasting an enemy to oblivion, and since battles can be pretty frenzied, with multiple ships involved, it also means exposing your vessel to concentrated fire.

So, as Star Trek: Armada ’s Borg commander, you have to decide whether it’s worth the benefit and buzz of assimilating your enemy. I’ve lost more than a few skirmish matches because I was determined to capture rather than kill. I wanted my enemy to know how thoroughly I’d beaten them, and my arrogance was my downfall. But, hey, there are always more Borg.

At least, there is in Star Trek: Armada — the signs are that Picard’s new Borg won’t be appearing in season 3 and that the current Borg Queen isn’t signed up. The old Borg are still out there somewhere, according to season 2 showrunner Terry Matalas , but I doubt we’ll see them anytime soon.

So why not hop over to GOG, pick up Star Trek: Armada , and make the Borg Queen proud?

Assimilate. It. All.

Borg Assimilator Dreadnought Carriers are commonly tasked with establishing Collective control over planets, but their true specialization is in technology capture. Their Assimilation Probes and on-board processing facilities allow for rapid seizure, capture, and disassembly of enemy vessels. This created an unusual opportunity for the Alliance – while most Borg technology is deeply morally unsettling, these vessels have proven an ability to remove an enemy ship from the fight while preserving most of its crew. By deploying Assimilation Probes to physically attach to defeated enemy vessels, the process of core breach can be arrested, and the ships later flown to safety or simply disassembled, their crews impounded for the duration of hostilities. The sheer amount of Alliance technology required to keep the Borg vessel somewhat functional outside the collective has attached Miracle Worker status to the ship, and while strange, the ability to command a flotilla of assimilated vessels as hangar craft has attracted many a captain to this experimental program. This brand new Borg ship, based on the design from the classic PC Game Star Trek: Armada, is coming to the Infinity Lock Box tomorrow!

Console - Universal – Disassemble and Analyze

This mechanism holds an enemy starship in place while samples are extracted, draining shields, dealing Kinetic Damage, and providing the starship a stacking bonus to Critical Chance for a moderate duration. It can be used repeatedly, storing up to 4 charges and generating a new charge every 30 seconds, but its true power comes from its use on friendly assimilated vessels.<br><br>When used on a friendly assimilated vessel, such as one captured by an Assimilation Probe, the bonus to Critical Chance is instead granted to all Hangar Pets controlled by the equipped vessel, the duration is permanent until map move, and it stacks up to 86 times. Assimilated vessels grants two stacks plus an additional stack per Hangar Pet Rank, up to a possible total of seven stacks. Assimilation Probes retain their Rank during this process and are able to assimilate additional vessels afterward, but other forms of assimilated vessels (such as those captured by Nanite Torpedoes, etc) are completely disassembled by the process.

This console additionally provides a passive bonus to Hull Restoration, Critical Chance and Hangar Pet Critical Chance.

Starship Trait – Targeted Excision

After achieving level 5 in your Borg Assimilator Dreadnought Carrier, you will unlock the Vanguard Shield Shaping starship trait. While this trait is slotted, activating Beams: Overload or Cannons: Rapid Fire activates rank I versions of both abilities on your hangar pets.

Borg Assimilator Probes (Frigates)

The Borg Assimilator Dreadnought Carrier has two hangar bays equipped with a Borg Assimilation Probes, drill-shaped vessels equipped with multiple Assimilated Plasma Beam Arrays. When they defeat an enemy, they are capable of drilling into its hull, preventing core breach and assimilating the vessel. Advanced and Elite versions of these powerful frigates can be obtained from the Dilithium Store and the Fleet Starbase, respectively. Assimilating a Foe grants increasing Base Damage bonuses based on Foe size, from +25% for frigates to +100% for dreadnoughts.

Notes [ | ]

  • New episode released as part of Season Nine: A New Accord on April 22, 2014 and integrated into the revamped episode Borg Advance , combining the previous episodes Borg Collective and Undine Advance .
  • Assimilation is a significantly reworked version of the previous Undine Advance mission “Assimilation (Undine Advance)” . It includes a complete revamp of the Borg Cube interiors used in the two ground sections The Cube (replacing The Maze ) and Guinea Pigs , removing all Assimilated Undine Guards and many Partially Assimilated Undine from the latter section.
  • The original The Impossible accolade – requiring to scan eight Partially Assimilated Undine – has been replaced with a much simpler, single scan in the fourth room of the Cube, during the Guinea Pigs section.
  • The original Assimilated story accolade given on the space map has been replaced with a new Assimilated general accolade, for becoming assimilated by the Borg on any Borg ground map.
  • If you are quick enough, after you disconnect the Undine from the Borg devices you can actually revive them as they count as downed allies. They don't do anything though, just stand there and sniff the air.
  • At the end of the mission, your objective is to destroy the Borg cube but the Undine will do it for you.
  • There's a minor Easter egg in this mission. When you arrive in the room that contains the Undine parts in vats, if you move near any of them with Borg eyes parts installed and swing your camera so that it's as if you're looking away from the head, its eyes will light up red:

Update 65: Gorn Invasion, Pt 1

By rebekah 9 April 2024

star trek armada assimilation

For the first time since it’s initial appearance in 2022, Strange New Worlds is making a comeback in Star Trek Fleet Command. This month’s content focuses on the benefits of PvP engagement, alliance cooperation, and new PvE challenges.

Update 65 Includes:

  • New Building: The War Room
  • New Gorn Hunter Hostiles
  • New Officers
  • New Missions
  • New Refits, Forbidden Tech, and Artifacts
  • New Cosmetics
  • New Battle Pass

The War Room

star trek armada assimilation

Following the Mission chain: Show Us Your Mettle , this Klingon themed “War Room” aims to reward players for Alliance PvP engagement. By unlocking Milestones, players will receive keys to unlock “Warchests” and earn great rewards. The rewards increase permanently by upgrading the building Level!

PvP Points are rewarded for battles (won or lost) and materials stolen. A 2 time multiplier will be added for actions in Territory Systems, and 3 times as many for Infinite Incursions. As you progress through the milestones, you’ll claim keys to unlock Warchests, and within them you’ll find the upgrade tokens ( Emblems of Honor ) needed to continue upgrading.

star trek armada assimilation

Rewards can include:

  • Basic and Σ Resources
  • Emblems of Honor
  • Seals of Ko’tal (unlocks the exclusive Tactical Warmonger Research Node)

In addition, the building provides the following Buffs:

  • War Room Shield Health: 20% -> 3200%
  • War Room Officer Stats: 10% -> 2250%
  • War Room Isolytic Damage: 0.50% -> 50%

The War Room is meant to help players receive additional resources in game, and it will continue to be updated over time to keep rewards relevant.

Check out this video about the War Room from Logan Starks, Product Manager, as well as this blog for more information.

Gorn Hunter Hostiles

In the vast expanse of the Star Trek universe, the Gorn have shown time and time again that they are beings not easily trifled with.

In “Strange New Worlds,” the crew of the USS Enterprise have found themselves face-to-face with these creatures on more than one account, proving that they are not merely adversaries to be overcome, but also provide a glimpse into the complexities of interspecies relations.

star trek armada assimilation

These Gorn Hunter Hostiles deal Isolytic damage and are immune to all non-Isolytic sources of damage, resulting in great rewards. We know PvP is not for everyone, so the team has approached these hostiles a bit differently. These hostiles provide players with a new way to use Isolytic damage and gain Artifacts, Officers, faction credits, and more. This includes the new artifacts launched last month in Update 64 and officers from both Voyager and Ent E.

To read more about these hostiles and where to find them, check out this separate article here.

In addition, the payout for six of the exBorg bundles increased significantly. Check out the new values below.

Galactic Recruit Assimilation Arc officers (Hugh, Ghalenar, Borg Queen, Dezoc, Gossa) are now replaced by Lower Decks 2 officers.

Following the structure of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, the missions will be “episodic,” each having their own self-contained story. Our narrative team is looking forward to sharing these stories with you in 25 new missions, including 4 sets of Core Missions released weekly, encompassing 5 episodic stories, and 5 missions to introduce the War Room.

Core SNW: The Meaning in the Message

5 Missions | Level 34+

The Fay (Q’nuz) – an alien race resembling elves – live to sow confusion between races, seeding space with beacons that flood planetary media systems with incendiary propaganda.

Core SNW: More Than Flying

An Andorian ambassador on route to rendezvous with the Enterprise has been kidnapped by a group of Klingons in an effort to destabilize the Federation.

Core SNW: Slay It Again, Sam

When the Gorn have a scent, they do not let it go. That’s bad enough if just one of them has it, but if you’ve caught the attention of an entire nest, you can pretty much kiss your existence goodbye. So when Sam Kirk finds himself cut off from the Enterprise and hunted by a group of five Gorn, he’s as sure as anyone can be that he’s a dead man. Fortunately for him, the Independent Commander is in the area and ready to lend a hand. They offer to return Sam to the Enterprise, but Sam doesn’t want to endanger the rest of his crew. Maia works out that if they can deal with each Gorn one by one, Sam Kirk might live to see another day.

Core SNW: Red Tape

The Enterprise crew’s diplomacy skills are requested in a system where bureaucracy is valued above all else. What begins as a simple mission snowballs into a series of comical hoops that the crew must jump through. The mission is put in jeopardy when La’an inadvertently insults the culture’s bureaucratic process, and the crew must de-escalate the situation before it turns into an all-out conflict.

Warchest Introduction: Show Us Your Mettle

The Commander hears about an exclusive Klingon society that runs tournaments and provides hefty rewards for the most honorable – and fearsome – of warriors. Unlock the War Room by completing these missions!

Assimilation

Borg drone 1, tactical cube 138

Kathryn Janeway being assimilated

Assimilation was the process by which the Borg added new members and new technology to the Collective .

Borg assimilation was predatory; every species the Borg encountered was assessed to determine whether its biological and/or technological distinctiveness was considered "worthy of being added to the Collective's perfection". If found to be so, the species was set upon and forcibly assimilated; the Collective considered the species' will in the matter "irrelevant". ( TNG : " Q Who ", " The Best of Both Worlds "; VOY : " Mortal Coil ", et al. ) When a species was assimilated, their neural pathways were restructured to link them to a single collective mind , the hive, and to augment their bodies with cybernetic technology . The end result was them becoming drones . ( VOY : " Drone ")

By the 2370s , the Borg had assimilated thousands of species. As of the 24th century , the only species known to have been considered unworthy of assimilation were the Kazon , as the Borg believed that assimilating them would detract from their goal of becoming perfect. ( VOY : " Drone ", " Mortal Coil ")

Nanoprobes in action

Assimilation in progress: Borg nanoprobes assimilate blood cells

The Borg generally did not assimilate individuals, and instead preferred to target larger groups such as the crews of starships and the populations of planets . When in the presence of a small number of individuals, Borg drones would ignore them altogether. This policy would remain in effect until an individual demonstrated some quality found worthy by the Collective, or posed a threat to Borg activities. For example, when the USS Raven was first detected by a Borg vessel it was disregarded. By the time the Raven was detected a second time, its crew had developed technologies to elude Borg sensors, making them a more worthy target. ( VOY : " Dark Frontier ")

The Borg made exceptions and assimilated individuals when circumstances required it, as when they chose Jean-Luc Picard to serve as an intermediary in 2366 , or to allow a small party of drones to bolster their ranks. ( TNG : " The Best of Both Worlds "; Star Trek: First Contact )

When engaging a starship, a Borg vessel presumed tactical superiority and locked onto it with a tractor beam . With the target immobilized, the Borg defeated its shields and either extracted sections of the ship with a cutting beam , transported drones to key areas, or both. ( TNG : " Q Who ")

Borg assimilating Enterprise-E corridor

A group of drones assimilating the interiors of the USS Enterprise -E

With the crew of a vessel assimilated or otherwise subdued, the Borg stripped the ship down for parts to incorporate into their own technology. If possible the assimilated ship was towed into a hangar aboard the attacking Borg ship. ( VOY : " Dark Frontier ", " Collective ") It was rare for the Borg to keep an assimilated vessel intact, except in instances where a Borg crew was forced to abandon their own ship and commandeer their victims' ship. ( Star Trek: First Contact ; VOY : " Scorpion, Part II "; ENT : " Regeneration ")

Faced with an entire fleet, as in the Battle of Wolf 359 , the Borg were willing to destroy individual ships outright, although some might have been spared for assimilation. ( TNG : " The Best of Both Worlds, Part II ")

The Collective typically did not seek out individuals or starships, assimilating them only as encountered. It was only known to actively target worlds and civilizations, ranging from small colonies to the entire realm of fluidic space . ( TNG : " The Best of Both Worlds "; VOY : " Scorpion, Part II ") The tactics of these large-scale assimilation missions varied. An entire fleet was dispatched to assimilate Species 116 , but on two occasions, a single ship was assigned to conquer the entire Federation . If the Borg did not choose to hold an assimilated planet, they removed its populace and any artificial structures from the surface. Alternately, they could maintain a presence on the planet, terraforming its environment to meet their needs. ( TNG : " The Best of Both Worlds ", Star Trek: First Contact , VOY : " Dark Frontier ")

The Borg had a standard set of hails which were sent to those targeted for assimilation. The actual wording varied, but the hails almost always included the following information:

  • Self identification (" We are the Borg. ")
  • Intention to assimilate the target (" You will be assimilated ", " Existence as you know it is over ")
  • The futility of attempted resistance by the target (" Resistance is futile ")

The following were known Borg hails:

  • " You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile. " ( ENT : " Regeneration ")
  • " I am Locutus of Borg. Resistance is futile. Your life as it has been is over. From this time forward, you will service us. " ( TNG : " The Best of Both Worlds ")
  • " We are the Borg. Lower your shields and surrender your ships. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile. " ( Star Trek: First Contact )
  • " We are the Borg. Existence, as you know it, is over. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Resistance is futile. " ( VOY : " Scorpion ")
  • " We are the Borg. Your biological and technological distinctiveness will be added to our own. Resistance is futile. " ( VOY : " Collective ")
  • " We are the Borg. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile. " ( VOY : " Dark Frontier ", " Scorpion ")

Technique [ ]

Stage 1: The victim is injected with nanoprobes.

Little was known about the Borg assimilation technique prior to 2368 . Observations since that time demonstrated that the Borg assimilated an individual by projecting a pair of assimilation tubules into the victim's neck, injecting nanoprobes into the bloodstream that began connecting the new drone to the hive mind . This was accomplished the moment a Borg drone was within arm's reach of the target. ( Star Trek: First Contact ; VOY : " Survival Instinct "; ENT : " Regeneration ")

During initial stages of assimilation, Borg nanoprobes began attaching themselves to the victim's red blood cells, allowing them to circulate throughout the body. ( VOY : " Scorpion ") Within minutes, the nanoprobes spread visibly through the capillaries of the victim's skin. The victim, at this point, still retained his or her individuality and had virtually none of the Borg's standard array of defenses. Left unchecked, the nanoprobes soon begin self-replicating and producing larger constructs that form the necessary Borg implants. The body was also injected with stabilizing metals such as lithium so the body can handle nanoprobes. Seven of Nine could remember the smell and taste of the metals. ( PIC : " Mercy ") Among the first major structures assembled was the neural transceiver , allowing the Collective to tap into the victim's mind and usurp control of his or her body. A vocal subprocessor was also installed. By this time, the new drone's skin coloration had changed to a pale gray and mottled as some small implants began to emerge inside and outside the body. In some cases, the skin and face became at least slightly deformed due to the implants growing in and on the body. ( Star Trek: First Contact ; ENT : " Regeneration "; VOY : " Unimatrix Zero, Part II ") The drone was then taken to a Borg facility to have larger implants surgically installed, including tools, weapons and exoplating. ( VOY : " Unimatrix Zero ")

According to Jean-Luc Picard , when it comes to the assimilation of an individual's mind, the process can take hours for a newcomer, as the Borg have to learn the victim's mind. However, if an ex-Borg were to be assimilated again, their mind would be taken in seconds, as the Borg already know the ex-Borg's mind. ( PIC : " Assimilation ")

In a daydream of The Doctor 's, the Borg were able to conduct assimilation by penetrating the defenses of a vessel with an " assimilation virus ," the effects of which were nearly instantaneous. ( VOY : " Tinker Tenor Doctor Spy ")

DNA modifications [ ]

Moreover, all Borg drones underwent minor genetic alterations to allow a seamless integration of their cybernetic components into their biology when assimilated. Thirty-five years after Picard's own assimilation as Locutus of Borg , it was found that the modifications of his DNA were in fact a little more extensive than usual. It altered part of his brain, making him a receiver for the Collective. This explained, how years after he was rescued from the Borg, Picard could still hear them without Borg implants. This alteration would later be misdiagnosed as Irumodic Syndrome and ultimately killed Picard. His son, Jack Crusher , also inherited the Borg alteration, but became a transmitter, rather than a receiver. After Picard's mind was transferred into a Golem , his corpse was stored by Dr. Altan Soong following the discovery of the anomaly in his parietal lobe .

A renegade group of Changelings , bent on getting revenge against the Federation after the Dominion War , teamed up with the weakened Borg Queen . In 2401 , the Changelings stole Picard's body and extracted the Borg DNA from his brain. They then infiltrated Starfleet, planting the DNA into the system architecture code of the fleet transporters. This meant that anyone, from any species, who used the transporters would have this bit of Borg DNA added into their genetic code. However, only the crewmembers whose brain had not yet fully developed, which for humans was under the age of 25, could be affected. When the Borg Queen assimilated Jack and hooked him up to a beacon, they were able to send a signal that instantly assimilated everyone who had their brain altered. ( PIC : " Vox ")

Treatment and defenses [ ]

Methods for preventing or overcoming Borg assimilation are of paramount importance to cultures that refuse to abandon members of their society captured by the Collective.

In 2153 , Phlox determined that exposing himself to omicron particles could disable the nanoprobes injected into his body by drones using technology originating in 2373 . This method was uniquely applicable to Phlox due to his Denobulan physiology and his immune system , which made him unusually resistant to assimilation. ( ENT : " Regeneration ")

The most basic, and arguably most practical remedy was to euthanize the intended victim either prior to or in the early minutes of assimilation, before the nanoprobes could install standard Borg defenses. During the Borg's raid of the USS Enterprise -E , Captain Picard saw this approach to be the lesser of two evils, believing his assimilated crewmen were irrecoverable under the circumstances and better off dying as individuals than living as drones. ( Star Trek: First Contact )

When rescuing Picard himself in 2367 , the crew of the USS Enterprise -D were not under direct attack by the Borg and therefore had the luxury of considering other options. Upon connecting his neural net to Picard's Borg implants, Lt. Commander Data was able to isolate Picard's individual mind from the Collective. Disconnecting Picard from his implants was considered a risky procedure, but upon the destruction of the cube that assimilated him the Collective lost its hold on him. Physical recovery was swift, although the psychological trauma was more severe. ( TNG : " The Best of Both Worlds, Part II ", " Family ") While the implants were removed, sufficient physical alterations lingered such that Picard could still perceive the Collective many years later. ( Star Trek: First Contact )

In 2368 a Borg cube was disabled in an electrokinetic storm in the Nekrit Expanse , causing approximately 80,000 drones to be disconnected from the hive mind. These former drones settled on a nearby planet, where their limited medical resources allowed them to remove most, but not all, of their cybernetic implants. After the population descended into war, they elected to form a new hive mind as the Cooperative . ( VOY : " Unity ")

The crew of the USS Voyager was forced to sever Seven of Nine 's link to the Collective when, through her, the Borg reneged on its alliance with the starship. Using a neural transceiver installed in him by the Borg Cooperative and a Borg alcove installed aboard Voyager by the Collective, Chakotay tapped into Seven's consciousness in order to distract her while B'Elanna Torres shorted out the console she was attempting to assimilate. ( VOY : " Scorpion, Part II ")

The Brunali genetically engineered Icheb with a pathogen that would infect the Collective after they sent him to be assimilated. After this pathogen killed all of the adult Borg aboard the cube which assimilated Icheb, the ship's maturation chambers prematurely released the juvenile drones who were not yet fully connected to the Collective, giving Voyager an opportunity to liberate them in 2376 . ( VOY : " Collective ")

A neural suppressant developed by The Doctor in 2377 made it possible for Kathryn Janeway , Tuvok , and B'Elanna Torres to be physically assimilated without being connected to the hive mind and losing their individuality. This allowed them to surreptitiously operate within a Borg cube and sabotage its central plexus . Following their mission the three officers were returned to Voyager where their implants were safely removed without medical complications. Use of the neural suppressant apparently correlated to the lack of psychological trauma suffered in comparison to Picard's experience. ( VOY : " Unimatrix Zero ", " Unimatrix Zero, Part II ")

Following Voyager 's sabotage of the central plexus, the Borg drones who had been connected to Unimatrix Zero were able to regain their individuality and mount a resistance against the Collective. They were not, at least initially, able to remove their Borg implants due to the urgency of the conflict. ( VOY : " Unimatrix Zero, Part II ")

Upon arriving in 2378 from an alternate future, Admiral Kathryn Janeway possessed several defenses against the Borg, including a neurolytic pathogen that prevented Borg nanoprobes from linking her to the hive mind while infecting the Collective. ( VOY : " Endgame ")

Complications [ ]

Successful liberation of an assimilated drone depended largely on the relation between the period of time spent as a drone versus time spent as an individual. Adults and children who were assimilated for only a short time were often easily reintegrated back into their old lives following disconnection from the hive mind. ( TNG : " The Best of Both Worlds "; VOY : " Unimatrix Zero, Part II ") However, drones who had spent the majority of their lives within the Collective resisted the very notion that they were better off as individuals, and could retain an admiration for aspects of Borg philosophy . Such drones could feel small or lonely without the "voices" of the entire Collective in their thoughts. ( TNG : " I Borg "; VOY : " Scorpion, Part II ")

In either case, the psychological impact of recovering one's individuality – and thus, the ability to feel the trauma of assimilation and the guilt of one's association with the Borg's atrocities – could be monumental. ( TNG : " Family "; VOY : " Survival Instinct ") Former victims would often feel discomfort within simulations of working Borg vessels or real, disabled ones. ( VOY : " Dark Frontier "; PIC : " The Impossible Box ")

From a medical standpoint, there were many risks in leaving the Borg Collective, primarily when the implants ceased to suppress the immune system and the body's organs began rejecting implants that have been given sole dominion over vital functions. The extraction of these implants could be challenging even for a skilled surgeon. One known type of complication occurred when deactivated microscopic implants become lodged against one of the cranial nerves. ( VOY : " The Gift ") Even after the successful removal of the cybernetics, the liberated drone might not have had access to medical technology that was sufficiently advanced to replace whatever body parts were amputated during assimilation. ( VOY : " Unity ", " Survival Instinct ") Certain implants, such as the cortical node , ocular implant , and assimilation tubules , could not be safely removed by Federation medicine as of 2378 . ( VOY : " The Gift ", " Imperfection ")

  • Trivia Having arrived back in 2024, Picard tells his crew not to step on any butterflies. This is a reference to the Ray Bradbury short story "A Sound of Thunder" in which a big-game hunter travels back in time to kill a dinosaur. In doing so, he steps off the predetermined path and inadvertently kills a butterfly. Arriving back in his own time, he finds the timeline has been changed. This gave rise to the phrase "The Butterfly effect" where small actions can have much larger repercussions.
  • Goofs Penance (2022) ends with the La Sirena crew confronted by Confederate security. They raise their hands in surrender and Picard's hands are empty. When "Assimilation" picks up the very next moment, Picard is suddenly holding a phaser in his still-raised right hand.

Dr. Agnes Jurati : [groggily] Picard?

Jean-Luc Picard : Doctor, are you alright?

[Agnes nods yes]

Jean-Luc Picard : Your plan worked. Power has been restored, along with the Queen. However... same leopard, same spots.

Dr. Agnes Jurati : No need to keep her activated, then.

Jean-Luc Picard : Agreed.

Borg Queen : [scoffs] Idle human threats. You won't deactivate me because of your deeply flawed inability not to hope in the face of hopelessness. I hold information you need. You, against all odds, hope I'll relent. Therefore, you won't deactivate me. And with each passing second, the mathematical probability that I get your ship grows. In the end, you'll sacrifice your lives for the future of the many. So, in the interest of efficiency, shall we just fast forward?

Dr. Agnes Jurati : What exactly is the information you hold?

Borg Queen : The location of the Watcher and when the temporal divergence occurs.

Dr. Agnes Jurati : Hmmm.

[nods her head]

Dr. Agnes Jurati : Are you sure about that?

Borg Queen : [starts to think, then realizes something is wrong] What did you do? Where is it? You...

Dr. Agnes Jurati : Stole it. Computer, dictate the file logged, "Shit I stole from the Borg Queen".

Ship's computer : 34.0488 North...

Borg Queen : No one takes from me, my dear.

Ship's computer : 118.2518 West.

Jean-Luc Picard : Coordinates.

Dr. Agnes Jurati : To find the Watcher.

Jean-Luc Picard : Ah, well done!

Dr. Agnes Jurati : I suppose even higher, cybernetic life forms can get sloppy with where they leave secrets lying around. But there's more, isn't there? When it happens. I can alm... I can almost feel it.

[Jurati chuckles]

Dr. Agnes Jurati : It'll come to me.

Borg Queen : What you have just done here is more difficult and vastly more dangerous than you realize.

Dr. Agnes Jurati : And what is that?

Borg Queen : You've impressed me.

Star Trek: Voyager's original ending had a surprise for the Borg

T he ending of Star Trek: Voyager didn't completely satisfy fans as we didn't get to see Voyager actually back on Earth nor did we see the crew reuniting with their friends and families. Instead, we see Voyager heading toward Earth, which wasn't exactly epic. But the original finale, according to Bryan Fuller [ via Giant Freakin Robot ], would have been a grand finale like no other with Captain Janeway taking on the Borg in an epic showdown.

According to Fuller, originally, because Kate Mulgrew wanted the captain to "go down with the ship but not at the full cost of her being," Captain Janeway was going to surrender Voyager to the Borg. But there was a nasty surprise waiting for the Collective—a reverse assimilation virus which would have destroyed the Borg from the inside out. The Voyager crew would have been able to use a transwarp conduit to make it back to Earth.

As Voyager escaped, an armada of Borg cubes would have followed, and the end result would have been quite the finale.

“This great final image of the Borg armada approaching Earth, and then out of the belly of the beast of the lead ship came Voyager, destroying all of the other Borg in its trail.”Bryan Fuller

Fuller thought this would have been the right way to end Janeway's journey with the Borg and would have given Seven of Nine complete freedom. Whether or not Janeway would have died in this version of the finale was still up in the air, but, like the hologram Janeway aboard the Protostar, it's a sacrifice she would have made either way.

Though this could have resulted in a finale that really resonated with fans, it could have essentially cost us Captain Janeway. With the powers-that-be unsure of whether or not she would have survived, this is a risk I'm glad they didn't take. The death of Janeway would have been traumatic, not only for her crew, but for those fans who would have gladly joined her crew. And since Voyager ended differently, Janeway has now returned as an admiral in the animated series, Star Trek: Prodigy. And most of us fans are holding out hope for a live-action return of the admiral. With so much Star Trek going on, there are plenty of places for her to pop up!
