OF ROMULUS Feat. HELION PRIME, Former DIRE PERIL Members Presents Star Trek Metal With Debut Single

Of Romulus sees Heather Michele and Jason Ashcraft reuniting in full force since the 2016 debut self-titled Helion Prime album along with ex-Dire Peril bassist Chelsea McMasters joining the band. With their debut single, which is also the namesake of their new project, they are happy to present to Star Trek and metal fans Of Romulus. The track was mixed by Michael Goodrich and mastered by Ted Whitten Media. Additional engineering was done by Carlos Alvarez of Dirty Viking Audio along with drums performed by Justin Tvetan (Wastewalker).

The band members comment on the new endeavor and song:

"I am so excited to be singing over Jason's always exceptional music again. It's been a long time coming, and I feel what we're working to deliver is some of our best work yet. I am so happy to finally be working so closely on a project with Chelsea. She's an incredible human and a phenomenal bassist. I'm so stoked to get to write and sing about something so very close to my heart. I hope I do my fellow Trekkies proud! LLAP," says vocalist Heather Michele.

"It's been great working with Heather again. While we did write the third Helion Prime album together this is our first time really back in the thick of it since the debut Helion Prime album. I am very excited about what we've been coming up with and think fans of old Helion Prime will be very pleased. Of course, I had to bring Chelsea along to slay on the bass!" adds guitarist Jason Ashcraft.

"I remember listening to Heather and Jason’s material a few years back before I had never really listened to power metal. That opened a door I never thought would have led to here and I’m SO thrilled to have gotten to be a part of this new project with them. I really think sci-fi fans will enjoy this high-energy, first release!" says bassist Chelsea McMasters.

For those who are not very familiar with Star Trek, Romulans are distant cousins of Vulcans (like Mister Spock). They look very similar to Vulcans, but where Vulcans are driven by logic and controlling their emotions, Romulans are highly emotional and rather xenophobic. They believe they are a superior race and are always scheming to take over control of the galaxy.

Heather Michele tells the story behind the band:

“So the concept for ‘Of Romulus’ is I am a Romulan commander, Jason is a Romulan sub commander, and Chelsea is our human companion we have enlisted to help us tell our story. Jason and I were members of a Romulan science vessel called the ‘Namek D’Ral that had figured out a way to travel through time (fun fact: The name for the ship is an anagram of Mark Lenard, who was the first actor to play a Romulan). So, the Romulan High Command sent our ship on a mission to travel through space and time, gathering intel on how we could manipulate the timeline to the planet Romulus’ advantage. Romulan starships have the ability to cloak, so they cannot be seen by the naked eye or by most tracking systems."

Basically, most of Of Romulus' songs are about episodes of Star Trek, with the assumption that the ship was there watching and couldn’t be seen.

Michele continues:

“While the ship was in the middle of our method of time travel (The Breakaway Effect; where you travel towards a star at the speed of light, then break away from its gravity and are thrown into another time), a glitch in the space-time continuum occurred causing the ship to malfunction and ultimately be destroyed. We happened to be in the vicinity of Earth in the 1980s, so before the ship exploded, Jason transported us off the ship down to Earth.

We’ve waited 40 years to find a way off Earth, to no avail, and we have finally decided our last option is to disrupt the timeline by telling everyone on Earth all these secrets we have learned in our travels (by singing about them). Our hope is this organization called ‘The Temporal Police’ will hear about what we are doing and come get us.”

Remember When: Tom Morello was in ‘Star Trek’ (both on TV and film)?

by Zach Shaw | May 24, 2016 | Columns , Remember When | 0 comments

star trek metal band

Tom Morello has contributed his musical talents to many films’ scores. In fact, not only did he add some guitar work to both Iron Man and Iron Man 2’s scores , but even made a cameo in Tony Stark’s first foray onto the big screen. But at the height of Rage Against The Machine’s popularity, the guitarist got to do something most Star Trek fans could only dream of accomplishing…

Morello was such a die-hard “Trekkie” that he reached out to producer Rick Berman about making a cameo in the 1998 film Star Trek: Insurrection . It turned out that Berman’s son was a huge fan of Rage Against The Machine, so he gave Morello an uncredited role as a Son’a officer. However, since Morello could barely be seen in the film (both because he was stuck behind other actors and had such heavy makeup on), Berman asked the guitarist to make a cameo on the UPN TV series Star Trek: Voyager . He only had a few lines as “Starfleet crewman Mitchell” on the episode titled “Good Shepard”, but it was enough for Berman to declare that Morello “did a great job. It was a little pick-me-up for everyone.”

Sadly it seems like Morello missed his chance to appear in this summer’s Star Trek Beyond   film (unless he filmed a cameo without telling anyone?). However, maybe there’s still a chance he could pop up in CBS’ TV series reboot ? Surely he can find time to film an appearance in between… whatever it is he’s been up to .

For now, watch Morello’s appearance on Star Trek: Voyager , as well as a “behind the scenes” look at his appearance in Star Trek: Insurrection, below.

And as an added bonus, see if you can spot Star Trek: Voyager Garrett Wang around the 2:08 mark of Rage Against The Machine’s video for “Sleep Now In The Fire”.

As Their Name Implies, Of Romulus Bring us Star Trek Metal |

With a name like “Of Romulus,” we definitely expected Star Trek-themed metal, and this band deliver and then some.

Trekkies rejoice—Heather Michael and Jason Ashcraft, formerly of Helion Prime, are doing a new project with Chelsea McMasters, formerly of Dire Peril. This new project has already graced us with a debut song of the same name as the band. You’re gonna want to break out the Romulan/Vulcan ears for this one. Not only is there some cool Trekkie imagery here, there’s a full-on Romulan fan fic backstory.

The track was mixed by Michael Goodrich and mastered by Ted Whitten Media. Additional engineering was done by Carlos Alvarez of Dirty Viking Audio along with drums performed by Justin Tvetan (Wastewalker).

The band members comment on the new endeavor and song:

“I am so excited to be singing over Jason’s always exceptional music again. It’s been a long time coming, and I feel what we’re working to deliver is some of our best work yet. Of Romulus are just getting started; stay tuned for more music coming soon.

Exclusive Interview: Prog Rock Band Spock's Beard

star trek metal band

StarTrek.com aims to leave no stone unturned when it comes to exploring Star Trek 's influence on pop culture and everyday life. And so you've read stories about Trek -themed weddings, fans spurred to careers in engineering, real-life astronauts guest starring on Trek , houses decked out with Trek screening rooms or living quarters and rock/pop bands who scored hits with Trek -inspired songs. Well, today we'll put a spin on that last one and shine the spotlight on Spock's Beard, a band named -- quite obviously -- after the facial hair of everyone's favorite Vulcan. The progressive rock/metal band formed in 1992 in California, co-founded by guitarist Alan Morse and his brother, Neal. The band carries on to this day, with Alan as the only remaining original member. Spock's Beard just finished the European leg of a tour in support of their latest album, "The Oblivion Particle," and from November 10-15 they'll be part of Cruise to the Edge, which will also feature YES, Marillion and several other bands on a cruise to Key West, Florida, and the Bahamas. StarTrek.com recently spoke to Alan Morse about Spock's Beard, how the band got its name and their current projects. Here's what he had to say...

star trek metal band

Spock's Beard is closing in on 25 years. How amazed are you by that longevity? I'm thrilled about that. It's been a great ride. I'm still having a great time. We had no idea, of course, when we formed the band that we'd still be around in 2015. So it's the best kind of surprise. Some bands break up after six months, so this is kind of hard to believe. Were you a Star Trek fan? Of course. I don't know if I'd say I was a hardcore Trekkie, but I was a huge fan. The stories were cool. The characters were so awesome. What's not to like? I didn't follow all of the shows, but I like the reboots of the films. It's good stuff. And the old episodes, they hold up. Take us through the story of how the band got its name... We'd gone through a few different names. Actually, a lot of names. We kept bumping into people, and their bands had names we were thinking of, so those wouldn't work. We thought we'd get tired of certain other names. Naming a band is so much harder than you'd think. It's challenging because it's hard to find something that's different and stands out and that you won't get sick of in a week. So we had to come up with a new name and we couldn't settle on anything, so we came up with a long list, a bunch of different names that I'd been collecting over a period of time. Spock's Beard was sort of a phrase that we'd say to each other -- my brother and I -- when something weird would happen. We'd say, "Wow, that's like 'Spock's Beard,'" meaning, "that only happens in a parallel universe, right?" Anyway, Spock only has that beard in the one episode, and it's when he's in the parallel universe in " Mirror, Mirror ." So, that was just something we'd say to each other as an inside joke. I put Spock's Beard on the list sort of as a joke. Everybody seemed to like it the best, and so we picked that one, and here we are 20-however-many-years later. Do you find that Trek fans are Spock's Beard fans? There's definitely an overlap. I would say that probably a sizable chunk of our fans are also Star Trek fans, just because our music comes from a similar mindset. A lot of our fans are, well... nerds (laughs). And I say that in the nicest possible way. I consider myself a nerd. So there's definitely a big overlap there, although I have to say there's nothing else in our music or in our lyrics that touches on Star Trek in any way. Did you ever meet or hear from Leonard Nimoy? Boy, don't I wish, right? No, I never did. That would have been mind-blowing. I never got to meet the man. Spock's Beard has been on the road supporting "The Oblivion Particle" and you guys were just in Germany, Italy, the UK and Budapest. And the cruise is coming up. If you can be at all objective, how pleased are you with the album? Well, it is pretty tough to be objective, like you say. But I think it came out fantastic. I couldn't be happier. I wish we could play more of it live. Some of it is just too difficult for us to take all those pieces of instrumentation, all that luggage, with us on the road. There's some good stuff on the album. And we're excited about Cruise to the Edge. We did another cruise last year and had a blast. So come see us with YES. It'll be a good time. Who makes up the fan base these days? You guys have been around so long you must look out into the audience and see the kids of fans -- and those fans were probably kids when they first discovered you... Exactly. There is some of that, and I love to see it. It's great to see the generations. Of course, a lot of it is the fans who have been with us since the beginning. They still come out to see our shows. So, when we're on stage, we see a lot of familiar faces every time. It's kind of like a family, really. Or it's like pals just hanging out together. The band crowdsourced its most-recent albums. What are the pros and cons of the way the music industry -- and getting music to the fans -- has evolved over the years? Oh my gosh, how much time do you have? The music industry has changed so much. It's great that, with the Internet, you can reach out to many more people than it would have been possible for us to reach back in the old days. There's so much streaming and downloading and everything, and that makes it hard to monetize it. A lot of bands make their money on the road, but the road is a challenge, too. So you make money on tee-shirts, I guess. Go here for the official the official Spock's Beard site and here for details about Cruise to the Edge.

"a very metal monster comic": the mcu's werewolf by night unleashes bloody fury in new red band series.

This Summer, Jack Russell, the Werewolf by Night, will return in a bloody new ongoing that will certainly please fans of this MCU breakout star.

  • Jack Russell, the Werewolf by Night, returns in a new mature series spinning out of the Blood Hunt event - complete with a new status quo.
  • Marvel shared a first look at the new Werewolf by Night series, by writer Jason Loo and artist Sergio Davila.
  • Marvel's new "Red Band" initiative offers uncensored, bloody Werewolf by Night stories which fans have been craving for over 50 years.

The Werewolf by Night made a huge impression on MCU fans, and now he is cutting loose in a brand-new, red band, ongoing series. Spinning out of the forthcoming Blood Hunt event , Marvel’s new Werewolf by Night marks the return of Jack Russell. In the wake of Blood Hunt , Russell faces a new status quo: now fighting alone, Russell must defeat enemies old and new.

An exclusive first look at Werewolf by Night , including the first issue’s cover by EM Gist, was released on Marvel ’s website. The new book, which will be written by Jason Loo and drawn by Sergio Davila, begins with Jack Russell’s life being changed forever. He can no longer trust those closest to him, and there is blood on his hands. Now, Russell must fight for redemption in a quest so bloody and violent, Marvel will be releasing it as part of their new “Red Band” series of books.

These titles, marked clearly for adults, arrive polybagged to keep kids out.

Werewolf by Night Is One of Marvel's Bloodiest Characters

Jack russell's inner turmoil is on par with the hulk's angst.

Speaking with Marvel, writer Jason Loo promised the new Werewolf by Night ongoing would be a “very metal monster comic.” For over 50 years, Jack Russell, the Werewolf, has been roaming the Marvel Universe, searching for inner peace and a cure for the curse that haunts him. A cult favorite character, the Werewolf made the leap to the MCU in 2022’s Werewolf by Night special. Played by Gael Garcia Bernal, the one-shot also introduced monster hunter Elsa Bloodstone, who will factor into the new Werewolf by Night series, and Man-Thing to the MCU.

The Werewolf by Night's human identity, Jack Russell, shares a name with a dog breed. Writer Gerry Conway, who came up with the name, swears he did not consciously name the character after a dog.

The MCU’s Werewolf by Night special introduced mainstream audiences to Jack Russell, giving them their first look into his dark and violent world. Jack Russell, much like the Hulk, struggles with the monster inside of him. Russell’s internal conflicts have driven the character since his first appearance in 1972’s Marvel Spotlight #2, and they have led him to some horrifying places. In last year’s Moon Knight Annual , Russell had ascended to “King of the Werewolves,” but even then he failed to find the peace that he sought. Now, Blood Hunt has ripped it all away from him.

Werewolf by Night Gets an Epic New Codename Ahead of MCU Debut

Censorship, not moon knight or vampires, is werewolf by night's worst enemy, marvel's new red band books will finally allow him to cut loose.

The Werewolf’s previous adventures, while disturbing and gruesome, were hampered by the Comics Code Authority or other such self-censorship measures. This meant that the Werewolf could not truly cut loose and show the world what he was capable of, and this carried over to his MCU debut as well. The MCU’s Werewolf by Night was gory, but still held back on showing its protagonist’s propensity to terror and violence. Now, however, with Marvel’s new “Red Band’ publishing initiative, fans will finally get the blood-soaked, adults-only Werewolf by Night stories they have craved.
