Why You Shouldn’t Point Your Smartphone Camera Directly at the Sun During Today's Solar Eclipse, According to NASA

And what to do instead.

sun travel remorque

LeoPatrizi/Getty Images

It’s eclipse day, and while you may want to take photos of the rare phenomenon, NASA warns it could actually damage your smartphone camera.

Ahead of the eclipse happening on Monday, the agency warned on X that the bright sun could damage the phone sensor, just like any other camera when pointed directly at the sun

“This is especially true if you’re using any sort of magnifying lens attachment on the phone. You would need to utilize the proper filters just like on any other camera,” NASA wrote in its post. “The best practice would be to hold a pair of eclipse glasses in front of your phone’s lenses when photographing the Sun at any point other than totality.”

The total solar eclipse , which has been dubbed the Great American Eclipse, is expected to cross the country from Texas and go all the way to Maine, starting near Eagle Pass, Texas, at about 1:30 p.m. CT. The eclipse is an especially big deal since the next total solar eclipse won't be visible from the contiguous U.S. until 2044, according to NASA .

For those who do want to capture the phenomenon on film (or camera roll), NASA does have a few tips to save your lens.

First, use a filter. A filter for your camera is just as important as wearing good solar eclipse glasses to protect your eyes — and NASA said you can even hold those same glasses up to the camera to capture photos. But if you’re in the path of totality, remember to remove the filter when there is 100 percent coverage “so you can see the Sun’s outer atmosphere – the corona.”

Second, remember there’s more to photographing a solar eclipse than the actual sun.

“The real pictures are going to be of the people around you pointing, gawking, and watching it,” NASA photographer Bill Ingalls said in a statement. “Those are going to be some great moments to capture to show the emotion of the whole thing.”

Lastly, remember any camera can be a good camera, but there are certain pieces of equipment that can help like a tripod to steady your shots (especially in low lighting).

This diagram shows what happens during a total solar eclipse

  • A total solar eclipse will be visible from Texas to Maine on Monday.
  • This cosmic event occurs when the Earth, sun, and moon align perfectly.
  • One diagram shows how a total solar eclipse works, and why it darkens the sky in the middle of the day.

A total solar eclipse will turn afternoon skies dark from Texas to Maine on Monday.

During the eclipse, the moon will cross between the Earth and the sun, completely blocking out the sun's light. If you're in the moon's shadow, the sky will go dark for about three to four minutes, depending on your location.

It's the climax of a cosmic dance between our planet , the moon, and the sun.

What causes a total solar eclipse

During a total solar eclipse, three key conditions happen at the same time: The moon is in the "new moon" phase; the moon crosses the plane of the Earth's orbit ; and the moon is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit.

When those conditions are just right, the Earth, sun, and moon line up. This diagram shows how that looks:

Then, if you're in the path of totality — which is basically the center of the moon's shadow, called the umbra — the moon appears to obscure the sun.

If you're in the penumbra — the outer region of the moon's shadow — you'll see a partial solar eclipse , where the moon appears to partially overlap the sun.

A total solar eclipse happens somewhere on Earth about every 18 months on average. It's rare for one to occur in any single place, though, because of the complex movements of the Earth and moon.

The moon orbits Earth every 29.5 days, while Earth has its own orbit around the sun. The moon's orbit is tilted about five degrees, which is large enough to keep its shadow off the Earth and the Earth's shadow off the moon most of the time.

There are two points — called nodes — where the moon's orbit crosses the Earth's plane. In the diagram above, the moon is lined up on a node.

Related stories

The moon aligns with the nodes and the sun about twice per year, which is how we get eclipses. A solar eclipse happens when the moon is between the Earth and sun. A lunar eclipse happens when the moon is on the other side of the Earth, farthest from the sun.

What the total solar eclipse will look like

In the path of totality on Monday, where the moon's umbra falls over Earth, the total solar eclipse will have 10 distinct phases , each with different amounts of the sun visible from the ground.

The phenomenon kicks off with what's called first contact, when the moon starts to pass across the sun. After about an hour, the moon will almost completely mask the sun, and you'll start to see a bright light radiate out of the sliver of remaining sun, known as the "diamond ring."

Then the moon will fully eclipse the sun, turning the sky dark in the middle of the day.

During totality only the sun's outermost atmosphere, called the corona, will be visible glowing around the dark disc of the moon.

After that, the moon will continue to travel across the sky to form another crescent. The eclipse ends when the moon ceases to cover the sun.

Types of solar eclipses

There are three types of solar eclipses .

Total solar eclipses, like this one, occur when the moon appears to completely cover the sun. If the moon only somewhat covers the sun, that's a partial eclipse . Many people who are near the path of totality, but not in it, on Monday will see a partial eclipse.

The third type, an annular eclipse , occurs when the moon is too far from Earth to fully block out the sun from our perspective. The outer edge of the sun remains visible as a bright ring around the moon.

A total solar eclipse is considered the most spectacular. Globally, only about a third of all solar eclipses are total.

The next total solar eclipse in the contiguous US will be in 2044.

How to watch the eclipse

If you plan to watch the eclipse, make sure you are wearing ISO-certified eclipse glasses . These are 1,000 times darker than regular sunglasses. Without them, staring at the sun could damage your eyes.

The only safe time to look at the eclipse without glasses is during totality.

Leanna Garfield and Anaele Pelisson contributed to an earlier version of this post .

Is it safe to drive during the solar eclipse?

sun travel remorque

The upcoming solar eclipse will mean lots of folks looking to the skies on Monday.

That might raise a key question for you, especially if you expect to be on the road that day.

Is it safe to drive during the eclipse?

“Since they are such a rare occurrence, we don’t often think about how an eclipse might impact driving conditions due to the unique challenges it brings to roadway safety,” according to Katie Bower, director of the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning. “As the eclipse unfolds, and visibility decreases, drivers and pedestrians should be extra cautious, patient and alert to ensure everyone makes it home safely.”

Bower noted that “we’ve heard that many Michiganders are heading to Ohio to view the eclipse and we urge everyone who will be traveling to buckle up, slow down and drive for the conditions, so we can all enjoy this rare event safely with family and friends.”

Only a very small piece of Michigan, around Luna Pier , is expected to be in the so-called path of totality, but Michiganders elsewhere will still experience varying degrees of the spectacle.

It’s not safe to look at the sun with the naked eye , and for the vast majority of us it won’t be safe to watch any part of the eclipse without protective eyewear at any point.

But what happens when you’re on the road? For starters, do not try to watch the eclipse if you're driving.

What's the advice for driving during the eclipse?

Various agencies have been offering tips. Here’s what AAA Michigan recommends:

  • Keep your vehicle’s headlights on.
  • Put the sun visor down to block your view of the sun.
  • Don’t wear eclipse glasses while driving.
  • Don’t try to photograph or video the eclipse while driving.
  • Don’t pull over to the side of the road, highway or interstate to view the eclipse.
  • Exit the roadway and park in a safe area away from traffic to view the eclipse.
  • Be mindful of pedestrians who may be walking around with their eyes on the sky.

A group focused on rail safety even put out its own advisory for Monday warning drivers and eclipse watchers to “stay clear of railroad tracks and trains.”

Federal Highway Administrator Shailen Bhatt advised in a video safety message that “this rare event may be a once in a lifetime for some but could have widespread impacts on the traveling public, so please plan ahead to arrive early and if you can, stay put to avoid traffic congestion. … Don’t have an eclipse in judgment. Be safe.”

What's the data show?

There doesn’t appear to be a ton of data on how eclipses affect road safety. The data around what for Michigan was a partial solar eclipse in August 2017 showed a decrease in crashes based on activity for the same day two weeks before and afterward, according to the state Office of Highway Safety Planning.

But circumstances elsewhere were more directly affected by the event. Places that saw a total eclipse that year attracted lots of visitors and extra road activity as evidenced by a photo from the Wyoming Department of Transportation included in a Federal Highway Administration document about eclipse preparations. That photo showed bumper-to-bumper traffic on a rural highway.

A research letter posted on the Journal of the American Medical Association website highlighted national data for the 2017 eclipse, which would include those areas that experienced a total eclipse. It found an increase in fatal crashes at that time.

“In absolute terms, this averaged to 1 extra crash-involved person every 25 minutes and 1 extra crash fatality every 95 minutes,” according to the letter.

The study cited increases in traffic, travel on unfamiliar roads, speeding to arrive on time, driver distraction, viewing from unsafe roadside locations and drug- or alcohol-induced impairment related to eclipse celebrations beyond just changes in lighting as factors.

More than 200 million people are within driving range of the upcoming eclipse the letter noted, highlighting the potential for out-of-the-ordinary traffic safety issues next week.

  • Portable Sun Shade Canopies /

Travel Light with High-Efficiency Compact Sun Shades

Advantages of portable sun shades and canopies, ease of transport and quick setup, uv protection without the bulk, durability meets lightweight design, selecting the right lightweight sun shade, materials and construction: what to look for, comparing sizes and shapes for different needs.

  • Personal vs. Group Use: For solo travelers or couples, smaller, compact, and foldable sunshades are the way to go. These shades are designed to offer sufficient protection from the sun without occupying too much space, making them perfect for individual use or outings with a partner. On the other hand, larger families or groups should consider bigger canopies that can provide extensive shade to accommodate everyone comfortably.
  • Activity Type: Camping trips might necessitate a larger, more robust sun canopy to withstand prolonged use and provide shelter for more extended periods. Conversely, for casual beach visits or picnics, a lighter, more portable sun shade would likely suffice, offering easy setup and takedown for a day's enjoyment.
  • Transportation Means: If you're hiking or trekking to your destination, a compact and lightweight sunshade that easily fits into your backpack is essential. This ensures that you can carry your sun protection without it becoming a burden. For situations where you can drive directly to your spot, such as car camping or tailgating, opting for larger and heavier canopies becomes feasible. These can offer more extensive coverage and are easier to manage when transportation isn't a limiting factor.
  • Environmental Conditions: Lastly, the typical weather and environmental conditions of your chosen outdoor locations can influence the size and shape of the sunshade you need. Areas prone to strong winds might require sun shades with aerodynamic designs and additional stabilizing features to prevent them from being blown away. In contrast, in open and particularly sunny spots, larger canopies might be necessary to provide comprehensive shade coverage, ensuring protection throughout the day.

Making an Informed Choice

Portable sun canopies for camping, combining functionality with convenience, setting up your camping sun shelter, maintenance and care tips for longevity.

  • Clean Regularly: It's crucial to clean your canopy after each use to remove any dirt, sand, or other particles that may have accumulated. Use a mild soap and water solution to gently wash the fabric, being careful not to apply too much force that could damage the material. Avoid the temptation to use harsh cleaning agents or bleach, as these can deteriorate the fabric's quality and color over time. Regular cleaning not only keeps your canopy looking good but also preserves the integrity of the material, ensuring it continues to offer optimal sun protection.
  • Dry Completely: Before storing your sunshade, ensure it is entirely dry. This step is vital to prevent the growth of mold and mildew, which can cause unpleasant odors and potentially weaken the fabric. If you've used your canopy in the rain or if it's collected dew overnight, leave it unfolded in a sunny, airy space to dry thoroughly. Even if the canopy seems dry to the touch, allowing extra time to air out ensures no moisture is trapped in the folds of the fabric or within the frame components.
  • Check for Damage: Regular inspections for any signs of wear or damage are crucial. Look over the fabric for tears, rips, or areas of thinning that could compromise your shade's effectiveness. Also, examine the poles and frame for any bends, breaks, or loose components that may need repairing or replacing. Early detection of these issues allows for timely repairs, which can be simpler and more cost-effective than dealing with more extensive damage later on.
  • Proper Storage: When not in use, store your sunshade in a cool, dry place to avoid exposure to extreme temperatures and moisture, which can degrade the materials over time. If possible, use the original carrying case or a protective bag to shield it from dust and pests. Proper storage not only keeps your canopy ready for its next use but also prevents accidental damage from improper handling or environmental factors.
  • Follow Manufacturer’s Instructions: Finally, always adhere to the care and maintenance instructions provided by the manufacturer. These guidelines are designed specifically for your canopy's materials and construction, offering the best advice for cleaning, repairing, and storing your shade. Following these instructions ensures you won't inadvertently harm your canopy while trying to take care of it.

Documents and Other Assistance Passports

If you are traveling outside of the United States, even on a cruise ship that makes a round trip to a U.S. port, you will need a passport. It usually takes 4 to 6 weeks to get a passport. If this is your first passport, go to the U.S. government website for the forms, instructions and passport office addresses.

You will need to appear at a passport office with

  • your application,
  • proof of citizenship (usually your birth certificate or social security card),
  • proof of identity (your driver’s license or other government issued I.D.),
  • 2 identical 2″x 2″ photos in color against a white background (the post office, Walgreen’s, Costco or Lieber’s Luggage can take these for you) and
  • payment (as of February 20, 2020 $145).

If this is a passport renewal and your passport is 12 years old or less, you can apply for renewal by mail. Go to the U.S. government website to find the form and fees due, have new photos taken and mail the package at least 4 to 6 weeks ahead of your planned trip.

Real I.D. is another type of identification, issued by the state of New Mexico. A real ID is a form of identification that meets increased security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. You will need a real I.D. to fly within the United States after October 1, 2020. It does not function as an international travel identification. You may go to the Motor Vehicle Department or to MVD offices with your required documents. Applicants must present two proofs of residency, such as a utility bill and a bank statement; proof of identity and legal residence in the United States; and a Social Security card. A W-2 form listing a Social Security number is an acceptable alternative to a Social Security card. More information ?

Global Entry or other Trusted Traveler Programs

Global Entry and other Travel Security Administration-issued Trusted Traveler (TT) identifications allow you (or SUN TOURS) to add the TT number to travel records. When your TT number is on your airline records, for example, you will receive a TSA Pre-Check on your boarding pass and be allowed to go through a special TSA Pre-Check line, which usually allows you to skip removing liquids or computers from your carry-on bag and to skip removing your shoes. Upon your return from overseas, if you have a Global Entry card, you can go through a kiosk rather than wait in line at U.S. Immigration. There are 4 different types of Trusted Traveler programs and you must have a passport to register for any of them, even if you do not intend to travel overseas. Go to the Trusted Traveler website for more information.

STEP – SmartTravel Enrollment Program

Florida news | you’ll have to wait 21 years for a total solar eclipse to hit florida. what to know..

This map for years 2041-2060 shows paths of total lunar eclipses in blue and annular solar eclipses in red, when the moon is farther away from the Earth and does not totally cover the sun. The next total solar eclipse to cross the bulk of the U.S. won't occur for 21 years, in 2045, but the umbra will pass directly over South Florida. (Courtesy Fred Espenak, NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center, from eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov.)

Monday’s total lunar eclipse will cut across the continental U.S. but leave Florida in the penumbra, where the moon will only cover part of the sun. We’ll have to wait two decades before a total solar eclipse hits our region.

Though there’s a total solar eclipse that will briefly hit North Dakota and Montana in 2044, the next one to travel across the bulk of the continental U.S. won’t happen until Aug. 12, 2045.

Florida is in the perfect location. The umbra, or darkest and most dramatic inner shadow of the moon, will pass directly over South Florida. Viewers will be able to experience “totality,” or the moon completely blocking the sun.

The 2045 eclipse will first pass over northern California, then arc gradually south and east to cross Colorado, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and the Caribbean before swooping along South America’s Atlantic coast.

The blue lines on this map indicate the path of the August 12, 2045 total solar eclipse. The umbra of the eclipse will pass directly over South Florida at around 1:30 p.m. (Courtesy Fred Espenak, NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center, from eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov.)

Florida cities within the umbra include Orlando, Tampa Bay, Fort Pierce, West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Miami. You can view NASA’s animated map of the path of the 2045 total solar eclipse here .

There will be a number of annular eclipses , where the moon is farther away from the Earth and therefore appears smaller and does not entirely block out the sun.

Annular eclipses can be quite dramatic as well, with the black moon appearing with a bright ring around it, but none will affect South Florida before the big total solar eclipse in 2045.

If you happen to be out of town, or the weather is cloudy on that special day in August of 2045, all is not lost. On March 30, 2052, a total solar eclipse will cut across central Mexico, the Gulf of Mexico and then northern Florida, casting its umbra across Pensacola, Tallahassee, Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina — a good excuse for a road trip.

The Emerald Isle

It's said that Ireland, once visited, is never forgotten, and for once the blarney rings true. The Irish landscape has a mythic resonance, due as much to the country's almost tangible history as its claim to being the home of the fairies and the 'little people'. The weather may not always cooperate, but the dampness ensures there are fifty shades of green to compensate - just one of the reasons Ireland is called the Emerald Isle.

Your guide to the 50th SUN 'n FUN Aerospace Expo in Lakeland

L akeland's  SUN n' FUN Aerospace Expo is celebrating a milestone at this year's event, which kicked off Tuesday morning at the Aerospace Center for Excellence.

The annual gathering of aviation enthusiasts will be the convention's 50th year since opening in 1974 as a 'fly-in' event. Since then, it has grown to Florida's "largest annual convention of any kind," attracting "over 200,000 visitors" each year, according to the non-profit's website .

The six-day event has everything from an aircraft showcase, hands-on workshops, educational forums, new technology as well as a "Family Fun Zone."

Airshows during the day and nighttime have historically been the most popular for visitors. Daily airshows are from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. There are two separate night airshows on Wednesday and Saturday starting at 7 p.m.

Special airshow acts include:

  • U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds
  • U.S. Navy F-18 Super Hornet Demo Team
  • U.S. Air Force F-35A Demo Team
  • TORA TORA TORA
  • Commemorative Air Force Warbirds
  • Commemorative Air Force Rise Above: Red Tail Squadron and Ghost Squadron Debut

To help kick off day one, there's a special opening night concert on Tuesday by country music stars, Dylan Scott and Sara Evans.

On the ground, you'll be able to get up close to more than 500 acres of aircraft including military planes, vintage planes, seaplanes, lightplanes and rotorcraft. There are also plenty of hands-on activities for the kids.

The organization's president and CEO, Gene Conrad, said that over 2,000 volunteers worked together to set up and organize the expo this year.

All proceeds from the expo fund the organization's programs and resources, particularly through the Aerospace Center for Excellence. ACE focuses on STEM-related aerospace education through summer camps, scholarships and outreach.

The event runs until April 14, 2024. Single-day tickets are $45 for adults, and $20 for kids older than 10 years old. Anyone younger gets free admission. Tickets for the entire week are available as well. Special pricing is available for Florida residents and spots to camp on-site.

Heavy traffic fails to cast shadow over eclipse travel experience: ‘It was 100% worth the trip’

A few hours after the total eclipse brought thousands of spectators to downstate illinois, traffic remained heavy on some interstates..

After viewing the spectacle that was a total solar eclipse in southern Illinois, some travelers were met with a less-incredible sight — bumper-to-bumper traffic.

The Illinois Department of Transportation estimated crowds of 100,000 to 200,000 would descend on prime viewing areas downstate ahead of the event , and told those making the trek to expect congestion.

A few hours after the eclipse reached totality in southern Illinois on Monday, IDOT said traffic remained heavy “in pockets along the length of I-57 northbound, north of Marion to Champaign, I-64 westbound west of Mt. Vernon to the Metro East St. Louis area, and all of I-24.”

Traffic is moving out post-eclipse, but slowly, with reports of crashes on some heavily traveled routes. Please continue to be patient and give yourself plenty of time if you’re leaving your eclipse destination. See you back in 2099! Tom Purdy, 42, headed from his home in Janesville, Wisconsin, to Mount Vernon in southern Illinois.

He said the worst traffic heading home was south of Effingham, but overall he expected the traffic to only tack on an additional half an hour to the usual five-hour drive.

"It was 100% worth the trip," Purdy said.

He said he missed the total eclipse in 2017; he decided he would make the trip this year "one way or another," ending up in a park in Mount Vernon with a few hundred other spectators.

He said he'll be in his 60s when the next total eclipse graces North America in 2044, but he expects to make the trip again.

Jason Wright from Atlanta, Georgia, took a detour with his family to Marion on their road trip back home from a trip to St. Louis.

The trip from Marion to Atlanta was expected to take nine to 10 hours, but after a 50-mile stretch that took him three hours to get through, Wright expected the trip to take closer to 12 hours.

Despite the traffic, Wright said the experience was "spectacular."

"I don't have any regrets at this point, I'm glad we did it," Wright said. "Now, ask me at 1 o'clock this morning when I'm still an hour from home, I may think differently."

Chicago saw a partial solar eclipse, peaking at 2:07 p.m. with 94% coverage.

Chicago's Office of Emergency Management and Communications encouraged spectators to take public transportation to viewing events around the city.

Day 1 / Stop 1 – The Red Square

  • Why it’s awesome: The Red Square is the most recognizable area in Moscow, it has mesmerizing architecture and centuries worth of history attached to its name.
  • Cost: Free to walk around, individual attractions in the square have separate fees.
  • Food nearby: Check out Bar BQ Cafe for friendly service and good food in a great location! The atmosphere is upbeat and they’re open 24/7!

The Red Square is Moscow’s historic fortress and the center of the Russian government. The origins of the square date back to the late 15th century, when Ivan the Great decided to expand the Kremlin to reflect Moscow’s growing power and prestige!

During the 20th century, the square became famous as the site for demonstrations designed to showcase Soviet strength. Visiting the Red Square today, you’ll find it teeming with tourists, who come to witness its magical architecture up close!

The Red Square

The square is the picture postcard of Russian tourism, so make sure to bring your camera when you visit! No matter the season, or the time of day, it’s delightfully photogenic!

It’s also home to some of Russia’s most distinguishing and important landmarks, which we’ve made sure to include further down in this itinerary. It’s an important center of Russia’s cultural life and one of the top places to visit in Moscow!

In 1990, UNESCO designated Russia’s Red Square as a World Heritage site. Visiting this historic site is a true bucket-list event and essential addition to your itinerary for Moscow!

Day 1 / Stop 2 – The Moscow Kremlin

  • Why it’s awesome: The Moscow Kremlin complex includes several palaces and cathedrals and is surrounded by the Kremlin wall. It also houses the principal museum of Russia (the Kremlin Armory).
  • Cost: USD $15.00
  • Food nearby: Bosco Cafe is a charming place to grat a casual bite to eat. They have excellent coffee and wonderful views of the Red Square and the Moscow Kremlin!

The iconic Moscow Kremlin , also known as the Kremlin museum complex, sits on Borovitsky Hill, rising above the Moscow River. It is a fortified complex in the center of the city, overlooking several iconic buildings in the Red Square!

It’s the best known of the Russian Kremlins – citadels or fortress’ protecting and dominating a city. During the early decades of the Soviet era, the Kremlin was a private enclave where the state’s governing elite lived and worked.

The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

Insider Tip: The Kremlin is closed every Thursday! Make sure to plan this stop on your Moscow itinerary for any other day of the week!

Day 1 / Stop 3 – Lenin’s Mausoleum

  • Why it’s awesome: The mausoleum displays the preserved body of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin .
  • Cost: Free!
  • Food nearby: Khinkal’naya is a charming Georgian restaurant with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick. It’s a popular place with locals and right next to the Red Square!

Lenin’s Mausoleum, also known as Lenin’s Tomb, is the modernist mausoleum for the revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin. It’s located within the Red Square and serves as the resting place for the Soviet leader! His preserved body has been on public display since shortly after his death in 1924.

It’s located just a few steps away from the Kremlin Wall and is one of the most controversial yet popular Moscow attractions!

Admission is free for everyone, you’ll only need to pay if you need to check a bag. Before visitors are allowed to enter the mausoleum, they have to go through a metal detector first. No metal objects, liquids, or large bags are allowed in the mausoleum!

Lenins Mausoleum

Expect a line to enter the building, and while you’re inside the building, you’ll be constantly moving in line with other visitors. This means you won’t be able to spend as long as you’d like viewing the mausoleum, but you’ll still be able to get a good look. Pictures and filming while inside the building are strictly prohibited, and security guards will stop you if they see you breaking this rule.

The hours it’s open for each day are limited, make sure to check online before you visit to make sure you can fit this into your Moscow itinerary for that day!

Insider Tip: The Lenin’s Museum is there for people to pay their respect; remember to keep silent and move along quickly, it’s not intended for people to congregate around. Also, men are not allowed to wear hats and everyone must take their hands out of their pockets when inside the building.

The cathedral was built from 1555-1561 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. It was designed with an iconic onion dome facade and enchanting colors that captivate all who see it. Fun fact: If you’re wondering why Russian churches have onion domes, they are popularly believed to symbolize burning candles!

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

Insider Tip: During the summer months the line to go inside the cathedral can get quite long! Make sure to arrive early or reserve your tickets online to guarantee quick access into the cathedral!

Cosmonautics Museum | Alexander Garden | Ostankino Tower | Izmaylovo District | Soviet Arcade Museum

Now that we’ve covered what to do in Moscow in 2 days, if you’re able to spend more time in the city you’re going to need more attractions to fill your time. Here are a few more really cool things to do in Moscow we recommend!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

  • Hear the timeline of the ‘space race’ from the Russian perspective
  • This museum is fun for both adults and children!
  • Admission is USD $4.00

The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration! The museum explores the history of flight, astronomy, space exploration, space technology, and space in the arts. It houses a large assortment of Soviet and Russian space-related exhibits, and the museum’s collection holds approximately 85,000 different items!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .
