We’d all rather look well-groomed while traveling. However, any traveler is familiar with the headache of opening your suitcase only to find all your clothes limp and wrinkled.

The most convenient tool for addressing this problem is the travel iron. This handy tool is specially designed to fit in your suitcase and is powerful enough to keep you looking tidy. Choosing the best travel iron can be intimidating, but we will guide you through the whole process.

It’s important to know what to look for when you are setting out to buy a travel iron. Perhaps your foremost consideration will be the size and weight of the iron in order to maximize your luggage storage space.

But there are several other factors to keep in mind, including the iron’s power and heat control. Let’s dig a little deeper into these aspects.

Weight and Size

Travel iron weight and size

One of the biggest advantages travel irons have over regular ones is their weight. Made to be easily portable in your luggage, they weigh significantly less than regular irons. Look for an iron that weighs approximately 1 pound .

As for size, a travel iron is built to fit perfectly into your suitcase or travel bag. This convenient tool’s dimensions typically vary from 6 to 8 inches in length.

Ease of Use

Travel iron ease of use

When it comes to a travel iron’s ease of use, there are a couple of things you should be aware of. First, take a good look at the handle and see if it looks comfortable . A functional handle will go a long way in making your iron usable. Second, the best travel irons include motion-sensitive technology, helping you iron faster and with greater precision.

On top of that, there are some really interesting additional features you can look out for, like anti-drip or water-spraying features, both of which contribute to overall ease of use when it comes to ironing.

Heat Control

Travel iron heat control

If you’re looking at an iron without the option to control the heat level, think again. Any travel iron on your shortlist should have this ability. You don’t want to iron synthetic clothes with the same level of heat as cotton clothes.

Hot Tip: Look for an iron that has printed indicators on the swivel that denote exactly what each level is for.

If you are traveling to a different country, look for an iron with dual voltage . You will likely be dealing with different voltages, which can render your travel iron useless.

If you plug your iron into a higher voltage source, you run the risk of frying it.

Similarly, power is an important consideration when choosing a travel iron. Simply speaking, more powerful irons are made for heavier clothes or fabrics that are hard to iron. So, choose wisely, and if you plan on straightening heavier clothes like hoodies or jeans, find a 1,000-watt iron that can handle the job .

On the other hand, lighter clothes like t-shirts and shorts will not require a powerful iron.

Portability

Travel iron portability

Weigh the portability of your travel iron against its power output. You don’t want to have to make room for a huge iron in your suitcase at the expense of something else.

Most travel irons are specially designed to ensure maximum portability, but it’s still something to consider.

The stainless-steel soleplate ensures a smooth glide over fabric, especially cotton and synthetic clothes. There is also an anti-slip heel on the bottom of the iron for maximum protection from unwanted contact .

Best Steam Irons of 2024

When it comes to your wardrobe and presentation, few things look sloppier than wrinkles. A steam iron is essential for anyone who needs a crisp, unwrinkled shirt or pair of pants. Using hot steam instead of just heat, these home appliances are more efficient than your dryer’s anti-wrinkle cycle or the steam from your shower. The best steam irons come with multiple settings that can be safely used on multiple fabrics.

Daniel Feliciano, co-founder and CEO of on-demand laundry service Clotheslyne, warns not all irons (or ironing boards ) are created equally. “The key lies in correctly using the temperature and steam settings ideal for each fabric type,” Feliciano says. “Delicate fabrics still require careful handling, and not all irons may be suitable for very specific or unusual materials.”

Using Feliciano’s expertise as a guideline, the U.S. News 360 Reviews team looked at dozens of steam irons and found the best options for homemakers, crafters, travelers, and more. Our top picks have automatic shut-off to prevent burns, smooth soleplates for seamless ironing, and high steam output for the best results every laundry day.

PurSteam Iron 1800W  »

PurSteam Iron 1800W

11 fabric settings on LCD display

Three-way auto shut-off

Self-cleaning, non-stick soleplate

Large 11-ounce water tank

Can be used as a vertical steamer

Cord isn’t retractable

Relatively heavy for an iron

The PurSteam Iron 1800W takes the crown as the best steam iron due to its versatility and efficiency. Users can toggle between 11 fabric settings on an easy-to-use LCD screen that adjusts the steam and temperature output, so you can properly care for everything from steam to satin without any guesswork.

The double-layered ceramic soleplate glides effortlessly across most fabric types, and the iron doubles as a vertical steamer for garments, curtains, and more delicate items like silk. You also don’t have to worry about water or mineral build-up ruining your clothes since the iron’s soleplate comes with an anti-drip and self-cleaning system.

It’s still important to regularly clean and descale your iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions to avoid excess mineral build-up, which naturally occurs due to the minerals found in tap water. Still, a self-cleaning system can increase the appliance’s longevity and keep your clothes streak-free.

At 1,800 watts, it's powerful enough to get hot in seconds, not minutes, and the three-way auto shut-off prevents scorched clothes or ironing boards. All this at a good price makes the PurSteam Iron 1800W a no-brainer for anyone looking for professional-quality laundry care in the comfort of their home.

Black + Decker Easy Steam Compact Iron  »

Black + Decker Easy Steam Compact Iron

Six fabric settings

Cord pivots for easy maneuvering

Comfortable handle

Lower wattage means it doesn’t get as hot as other irons

No automatic shut-off

The Black + Decker Easy Steam Compact Iron is proof that sometimes you get more than you paid for. The features-packed steam iron has six fabric settings – more than you get on some more expensive options.

Beyond the features is the ironing experience. For starters, the ComfortGrip handle is a blessing for those longer ironing sessions that typically result in cramped hands. The 360-degree pivoting cord eliminates another annoyance by allowing you to easily place it out of your way, which lefties and righties alike can appreciate.

To top it all off, it has an anti-drip system to prevent water from dripping out of the soleplate when it runs at lower temperatures and a non-stick soleplate that should glide over most fabrics.

The lower price comes with lower wattage, so this iron will take more than a minute to get hot and there are no automatic shut-off features. That said, it’s compact for easy storage and has a two-year warranty.

Rowenta Steamforce Iron  »

Rowenta Steamforce Iron

Anti-calcium system for increased longevity

Self-cleaning system

Increased steam output

Only five fabric settings

The anti-calcium system on the Rowenta Steamforce Iron stops minerals from entering the water used on your clothes in the first place, increasing the steam iron’s longevity and preventing white streaks from showing up on your fabrics.

Minerals found in tap water can build up on a steam iron’s soleplate, which can rub off on your clothes and decrease the iron’s performance by clogging the holes and preventing steam from escaping. Rowenta’s anti-calc valve allows you to see just how much mineral build-up it captures during monthly cleanings, which simply require soaking the valve in lemon water.

Steamforce is an appropriate name for this iron because it is a force of nature when it comes to getting steamy. It can reach a maximum steam output of 210 grams per minute, which means it transforms that much liquid into vapor every 60 seconds, and the soleplate has 400 holes for even distribution.

At 1,800 watts, it gets hot quickly and has a three-way auto shut-off for safety. The easy-to-use LED screen means you don’t have to guess if you’re using the right amount of heat or steam on the fabric you’re ironing.

Sunbeam Hot-2-Trot Travel Steam Iron  »

Sunbeam Hot-2-Trot Travel Steam Iron

Lightweight and portable

Dual voltage for use in multiple countries

Budget-friendly

Can be used as horizontal and vertical steam iron

Takes a while to heat up

Small water tank

The Sunbeam Hot-2-Trot Travel Steam Iron takes up less space in your suitcase than that unnecessary pair of pants you packed. But size isn’t the only reason we recommend it for travel. It has dual voltage ranging from 120 to 240 volts, meaning it can be used just about anywhere in the world, so long as you have a plug adapter.

Use it to freshen up clothing you bring on your next trip. A non-stick soleplate prevents snags on shirts or pants, the dial controls temperature and steam output, the eight-foot cord allows for easy maneuvering, and it can be used horizontally and vertically.

The water tank only holds about a third of a cup of water, but on the bright side, there’s a translucent tank so you never have to wonder when you’re about to run out of steam. You’ll also want to give it some time to heat up since it only has 800 watts of power.

It costs around $25 and customer reviewers say it outperformed their expectations and worked well for many years – one person said they’ve used it as their main iron for more than a decade.

Panasonic Cordless Iron  »

Panasonic Cordless Iron

Cordless design

Built for precise ironing in any direction

Heats up quickly

Good for quilters and tailors

The Panasonic Cordless Iron was built for quilters and seamstresses who needed a hassle-free and precise steam iron, though anyone can reap this steam iron’s benefits. This cordless iron gives users a 360-degree range of motion, meaning you can move it in any direction and watch wrinkles fade away without worrying about snags.

The multidirectional ironing is supported by a double-tipped precision soleplate made of nickel-coated stainless steel that glides over homemade crafts and clothes. The precision tip helps users hone in on seams, pleats, and around buttons for detailed ironing, and an anti-drip system prevents water from spilling on your clothes and crafts. What’s more, the soleplate has an anti-calc system to prevent mineral buildup and prolong the iron’s lifespan.

If you need a quick burst of steam, it doubles as a vertical steamer that weighs less than traditional steamers that require a cord. The cordless design also comes in handy when it comes time for refilling, as the water reservoir detaches from the iron for easy pouring.

Despite its small size, it packs 1,500 watts so it should heat up and be ready to use in about a minute.

Conair Extreme Steam Pro  »

Conair Extreme Steam Pro

Fast heat-up

Adjustable steam and temperature

Non-stick soleplate

Two-way auto shut-off

Anti-calc calcium collector

No automatic fabric settings

No anti-drip feature

Packing 1,875 watts of power, the ConAir Extreme Steam Pro heats up fast. There’s enough time to finish your ironing and make it out the door before the morning rush hour. Three heat levels can unwrinkle five types of fabrics, and an easy-to-adjust temperature dial controls the steam output.

It’s not just the high wattage that cuts down your ironing time, either. The soleplate is made of nano titanium, the same material used in many hair flat irons, for a smooth glide and the pointed detailer tip lets you focus on detailing work with ease. An anti-calc calcium collector and self-cleaning ensures you won’t spend time getting rid of white streaks on your clothes, and helps the iron last longer.

Although it doesn’t impact its functionality, the rose gold soleplate is a nice touch and makes the steam iron stand out among its competitors.

The two-way auto shut-off provides peace of mind whether you’re in a rush or not, though only when it’s left in the upright or down position.

Oliso Auto-Lift Iron  »

Oliso Auto-Lift Iron

Auto-lift feature is perfect for quick bursts of steam

Two-inch detailer tip

Durable and non-stick ceramic soleplate

12-foot pivotable cord

Available in four fun colors

Only four fabric settings

Quilters and sewers will never accidentally scorch another project with the Oliso Auto-Lift Iron at their side. As its name suggests, this steam iron comes with auto-lift technology that lifts the soleplate as soon as you let go of the handle and lowers it when you grab it again.

Crafters will also love the two-inch detailer tip when working with bias tape or tight corners, and it can press over and under pleats, pockets, and collars. On top of that, it can be used as a horizontal or vertical steam iron and a fabric selector for adjustable steam output. Oliso’s trademarked diamond ceramic flow soleplate boasts non-stick properties and “superior” heat output.

We typically like an iron’s auto shut-off to be shorter than 30 minutes, though crafters will appreciate not having to reheat if they decide to take a short break or tend to another task. There’s also a 30-second safety shut-off in case the iron is accidentally tipped over.

A 12-foot pivotable cord gives crafters the ability to place the iron exactly where they need it, and 1,800 watts of power helps it heat up in under a minute.

HiLife Steamer  »

HiLife Steamer

Gentle for more sensitive fabrics

Large water tank

Nine-foot cord

Three-year warranty

More susceptible to mineral buildup

The HiLife Steamer was made for delicate fabrics like chiffon, lace, silk, and other fabrics that don’t do well with high heat. The use of a steamer also eliminates any concern of your iron snagging and tearing fabric.

The water tank holds just more than a cup of water, which is enough for up to 15 minutes of steaming, and has a nine-foot cord so you can bring it into your closet or right up to your curtains. At 700 watts, it’s not as powerful or as hot as a horizontal steam iron but vertical irons such as this were not made for heavily-wrinkled clothes. This is for light touch-ups on garments, or steaming wrinkles out of curtains or craft projects.

It’s compact and lightweight enough to easily fit in suitcases. However, it only works with 120-volt power outlets so you’ll need a power adapter if you plan on freshening up your clothes with it on international trips. It comes with a three-year warranty.

Chi Touchscreen Iron  »

HiLife Steamer

Touchscreen for easy fabric selection

Easy-to-fill water opening

Heats quickly

Titanium-infused ceramic sole plate

No anti-calc system

The Chi Touchscreen Iron looks and acts like something from an episode of “The Jetsons.” The touchscreen can be used to adjust heat and steam output based on fabric type, the iron symbol found on clothes’ care labels, and even by specific temperatures. Not only that, it shows you its preheating progress and clearly states when it’s ready for use.

There are more bells and whistles than just the touchscreen, too. The titanium-infused ceramic soleplate is the same material used in the company’s flat irons, which are considered to be some of the best in the haircare industry and allow for smooth gliding over most fabric types. It can be used as a vertical iron and has a three-way auto shut-off, a self-cleaning mechanism, more than 400 holes for even heat and steam distribution, adjustable steam control, and a 10-foot cord.

One of our favorite features is the easy-to-fill water opening that’s wider than most steam irons, so there are no funnels needed to prevent spills.

The Bottom Line

Although the best steam iron will vary based on needs, there are things all iron owners can agree on. Safety features like automatic shut-off provide peace of mind, a high wattage allows for quick heating, and conveniences such as fabric selectors can eliminate guesswork when it comes to heat and steam output. A self-cleaning and anti-calc system can help prolong an iron’s lifespan by reducing the amount of tap water minerals that clog the soleplate’s steam holes. The PurSteam Iron 1800W comes with all of these and more at a reasonable price, which is why we crowned it our top pick.

Things To Consider When Buying Steam Irons

Daniel Feliciano, co-founder and CEO of on-demand laundry service Clotheslyne, says there are several things people should keep in mind when looking for a steam iron for their clothes or other fabrics.

Steam output and power : Steam output refers to the amount of liquid an iron turns into steam, and it’s usually measured in grams per minute. Feliciano says shoppers should look for irons that allow you to either manually adjust the steam output or automatically adjust it based on fabric selections. “Different fabrics require different steam levels,” Feliciano says. “For instance, delicate fabrics like silk need less steam than heavier fabrics like cotton or denim, which is great if the steam iron has variable steam settings to customize the approach to different materials.” Power is usually measured in watts, and it’s usually a good indicator as to how quickly an iron can heat up. Irons with lower wattage generally require more time before they’re ready to use on your clothes.

Soleplate material and design : The soleplate is the section of the iron that makes contact with your clothes, and it emits steam and heat to eliminate wrinkles. Think of it the same way you would a vehicle’s tires – you want something that’s going to glide effortlessly, handle bumps with ease, and last for a while. “Non-stick, durable soleplates such as those made from ceramic or stainless steel are popular choices,” Feliciano says. “Ceramic plates guarantee an even heat distribution and are less prone to sticking, while stainless steel is durable and has a smooth glide. As a bonus tip, look for an iron with temperature settings suitable for different fabrics, from synthetics to cotton and linen.” Bonus features to look for include anti-drip systems to prevent water from spilling out of the soleplate when it runs at lower temperatures, and a self-cleaning mechanism to flush out minerals found in tap water to prevent the soleplate’s holes from becoming clogged.

Temperature control and settings : Temperature control and settings look different on steam irons, but at the very least you should look for one that allows you to adjust heat and steam output so you can use it on different fabrics. More basic irons come with manual adjustments, which may require some guesswork when working with various fabric types. That said, the care label on many clothes, curtains, and other fabrics sometimes tell you what heat level you should set your iron at by using an iron symbol with dots. One dot means low heat and three dots means high heat. More advanced irons automatically adjust the temperature and steam based on these symbols by simply selecting the fabric you’re looking to iron.

Water tank capacity and ease of refilling : You can’t have steam without water, so steaming abilities depend on your iron’s water tank. “Larger tanks provide longer ironing sessions, and a transparent tank helps monitor water levels,” Feliciano says. The ease of refilling is another factor to keep in mind, especially if you’re someone who irons a lot of clothes at once. Most irons have small, hard-to-fill holes that either require a steady hand and a careful eye or a good old-fashioned funnel, though some newer options have created larger openings for easy refilling.

Cord length : The best steam irons come with cords several feet long because it allows the user to have greater range of motion. A pivottable cord can increase that range by allowing the user to place out of their way. Some people may even prefer a cordless design, though Feliciano says the downside to those is they require more frequent recharging. A longer cord allows steam irons with vertical steaming capabilities to be brought up to curtains or hanging garments for easy steaming.

Safety features : Many steam irons come with auto shut-off capabilities to prevent burns to your clothes or a fire from breaking out in your home, and it also conserves energy. “This feature automatically turns the iron off after a period of inactivity,” Feliciano says. Ideally, you’ll want a steam iron with three-way auto shut-off, which means it can turn itself off during periods of inactivity in the upright position, when laid down, and on its side. Some irons only come with auto shut-off for the upright and bottom positions, which can still prevent burns and save energy.

How We Chose the Best Steam Irons

The U.S. News 360 Reviews team worked with on-demand laundry service Clotheslyne to learn how professionals determine what makes the best steam iron. Daniel Feliciano, the company’s CEO and co-founder, told us to look for irons with adjustable heat and steam settings so they can be used on multiple fabric types, automatic shut-off for safety, a self-cleaning mechanism to mitigate mineral buildup, and a well-designed soleplate.

After that, we searched online community forums to see what real-life people think of irons available online and in stores, and what they thought of top brands like Rowenta, Panasonic, and ConAir. We did the same research in quilter, sewing, and general crafting forums to get a better understanding of how their needs and preferences differ from the general public.

After all that, we scoured through customer reviews on multiple products before whittling our list down to our final picks of versatile and feature-packed steam irons.

WHY SHOULD YOU TRUST US?

Our contributors and editors have years of experience researching, testing, and reviewing products. Additionally, Anthony O’Reilly , the author of this piece, worked with on-demand laundry service Clotheslyne to get a better understanding of how steam irons work and what to look for. Before becoming a commerce writer, Anthony was an award-winning journalist for weekly newspapers in Queens and on Long Island, New York. He worked for Blank Slate Media, the Queens Chronicle, and The Long Island Herald.

Look for a steam iron with adjustable heat and steam output so you can use it on different fabrics, automatic shut-off to prevent scorches, a large enough water tank for your laundry needs, and a non-stick soleplate, preferably with a precision tip.

The water tank capacity determines how much ironing you can do before needing to refill the reservoir. Larger families should get an iron with a larger tank, whereas a single person or small family will do fine with a smaller tank.

The most important safety feature in a steam iron is automatic shut-off, which turns the iron off after a period of inactivity to prevent scorched clothes or fires. Most steam irons will have this when it’s face down or upright, though some may also have shut-off for irons placed on their side.

Expert Tips for Selecting the Perfect Compact Steam Iron

To select a compact travel and home steam iron or garment steamer, there are a few key factors you should consider. Firstly, look for a lightweight and portable design that will be easy to carry around during your travels. This will ensure convenience and make it simpler to pack in your suitcase. Additionally, pay attention to the features and functions offered by the steam iron or garment steamer. Look for adjustable heat settings, a large water tank capacity, and a quick heat-up time. These factors will allow for efficient and effective ironing or steaming. Finally, read customer reviews and check the reliability and durability of the product. Opt for a trusted brand that offers good customer support. By following these guidelines, you’ll be able to select a compact steam iron or garment steamer that meets your needs perfectly, whether at home or on the go.

  • Compact and Portable : Check if the iron is truly compact and portable, as this is one of its main selling points. It should be lightweight and small enough to fit comfortably in your travel bag, making it convenient to carry around
  • Dual Voltage Compatibility : Make sure the iron has dual voltage capabilities. This feature allows you to use the iron in different countries with different electrical systems without the need for a voltage converter. It’s essential if you often travel internationally
  • Non-Stick Soleplate : Look for an iron with a non-stick soleplate. This feature ensures that the iron smoothly glides over your clothes without sticking or snagging the fabric. It also makes it easier to clean the soleplate after use
  • Steam Functionality : Check if the iron offers a steam function. Steaming helps to remove wrinkles more efficiently and provides a crisp finish to your clothes. Having a steam feature is particularly useful when working with slightly more stubborn or creased fabrics
  • Water Tank Capacity : Consider the water tank capacity of the iron. A larger tank will allow for more extended ironing sessions without frequent refills, reducing interruptions during your ironing tasks
  • Temperature Control : Check if the iron offers adjustable temperature settings. This feature is important as it allows you to set the ideal heat level for different fabrics, ensuring that you don’t damage delicate materials while still effectively removing wrinkles from sturdier fabrics
  • Steam Burst Function : Look for an iron with a steam burst function. This feature releases a burst of steam, which helps to tackle stubborn wrinkles and creases more effectively
  • Safety Features : Ensure that the iron comes with some safety features, such as an auto shut-off function. This feature automatically turns off the iron if it’s left unattended for a certain period, providing peace of mind and preventing accidents
  • Cord Length : Consider the length of the iron’s power cord. A longer cord gives you more flexibility and maneuverability while ironing without needing an extension cord
  • Warranty : Lastly, check the warranty details provided by the manufacturer. A good warranty will give you confidence in the product’s quality and provide you with support in case of any issues or defects

Review of Sunbeam Steam Master 1400 Watt

Sunbeam Steam Master 1400 Watt

Easy to use.

If you are looking for an affordable and reliable corded iron, the Sunbeam Steam Master may be perfect for you. This model comes with a retractable cord and allows storing it inside the base with just a quick press on a button. Moreover, such a cord is very convenient in management as you can retract it to the appropriate length.

The Sunbeam Steam Master has a smooth stainless steel soleplate that glides smoothly on any type of fabric, and even guards against the fabric wrinkling under its movement. A pointed tip allows you to iron pleats and move around buttons easily with no snagging.

You can also use the dual spray mist when you need to dampen the materials. So, even the most stubborn wrinkles will be removed with this reliable steam iron. The Sunbeam Steam Master also includes a dial on a grip handle that lets you avoid the accidental changing of preset settings.

Also, we would like to point out that this easy-to-use steam iron is a lightweight model with a comfortable grip so you won't get tired fast during the ironing, even during long sessions.

Review of Sunbeam Steam Master 1400 Watt

This steam iron takes slightly more time to heat up in comparison with most other models on our shortlist. But this factor doesn't have a negative impact on the steam output. With the Shot of Steam feature and a high-volume steam burst, it blasts away even extra-stubborn wrinkles.

Compared to the top-rated irons, this Sunbeam model loses some scores in terms of soleplate design. It has only 15 macro-sized steam holes on the soleplate, which are, however, evenly distributed to deliver good steam distribution.

Sunbeam Steam Master 1400 Watt in the use

Some Extras

The Sunbeam steam iron has got the same set of features that expensive units have. The continuous steaming mode will help you smooth out folds from the most delicate fabrics such as silk. This highly reliable model can also be used for quick ironing of clothes in an upright position so that you don't need to start a half-an-hour process but can get rid of unwanted wrinkles in a matter of minutes.

The Anti-drip system prevents the water from spilling when you need to iron at a low temperature. And the 3 Way Motion Smart technology stands for your safety, automatically turning the steam iron off in case it's been either tipped over or left on the garment or plugged in for some time not in use.

This combination of features and performance makes the Sunbeam Steam Master iron a great model for everyday use.

User Manual     Manufacturer

Sunbeam Steam Master 1400 Watt

Sunbeam GCSBCS-200-000

A bit of extra power.

The GCSBCS-200-000 is the model that tops the list of not only Sunbeam irons but also many other professional-grade models from popular brands at a higher cost. Let's see why.

First and foremost, the Sunbeam iron packs more power than most of its "siblings", which allows it to deliver faster and finer results. To give you the gist, it boasts 1500 watts of power so it can produce copious amounts of steam and smooth out even the worst wrinkles in your garments. Is it safe to use with all types of fabric? Definitely, yes - i t's made with a variable steam selector to let you choose the temperature according to the fabric type. Additionally, the iron has the Shot of Steam button that releases a quick, powerful burst of steam to relax even the most stubborn creases.

Not dissimilar to other full-size irons, the GCSBCS-200-000 features vertical steam shots. However, take note that due to the solid weight of the iron, some users might find it a bit of a workout to use it for vertical steaming for more than a few minutes.

A slightly extended weight is partly achieved owing to its large water tank of 10.42 oz. T his means that you will be able to steam longer with this guy, which would be a good point in anyone's book.

Review of Sunbeam GCSBCS-200-000 Turbo Steam 1500 Watt

And A Bit More Coverage

It's not only the tank of the iron that adds to its weight. The unit is also featured with an extra-large stainless steel soleplate, which makes it slightly hefier, but at the same time provides more coverage for faster ironing results. Besides, owing to its overal weight, the iron almost doesn't require pressure so you can effectively remove wrinkles without breaking a sweat.

Despite its respectful weight, this iron is still pretty agile and can easily smooth fine details on collars, cuffs, lapels and areas around buttons thanks to its pointed tip. An extra long 10-foot 360° swivel cord adds to the maneuverability of the iron, providing enough flexibility and preventing twisting or tangles. Do note that the cord is not rectractable, however, if you aren't going to keep it in plain sight, this shouldn't be a problem.

In all, the Sunbeam GCSBCS-200-000 is definitely a good choice for customers that often do a lot of ironing and are looking for a model to make this task more bearable, effective, and quicker. Its extra-long cord allows for convenient positioning of the ironing board, its extra-powerful steam helps with the worst of wrinkles, and its extra-large soleplate delivers faster results. Win-win.

    Manufacturer

Sunbeam GCSBCS-200-000

Sunbeam Classic GCSBCL-317-000

Entry-level model.

If you're in the market for a frills-free Sunbeam steamer for basic touch-ups and other light ironing jobs, the GCSBCL-317-000 is worth your closer consideration. For under $30, this classic steam iron doesn't offer any bells and whistles but works satisfactorily and does its main job as expected.

Fitted with a non-stick soleplate, it glides well over any type of fabric and smoothes out wrinkles quickly and efficiently. It heats up fine and performs well on the basic wool/cotton settings. However, on the highest settings, it may be not hot enough for de-wrinkling denim and other dense materials. This happens due to low power capacity that makes only 1200 Watts.

For the same reason, the boiler takes considerable time to heat up. The iron requires more than standard 2 minutes to generate the steam. But if you ask us to comment on how well it produces steam, our answer would be "as good as more pricey Sunbeam models".

Just like other reviewed irons, this one features Spray Mist and Shot of Steam functions. So, you can either use a powerful water mist to aid in setting creases or an extra burst of steam to remove the most stubborn wrinkles. The water tank must be at least 1/4 full of water and, what is quite handy, the o paque body makes the water fill line easy to see.

Review of Sunbeam Classic GCSBCL-317-000 Steam Iron

Design Peculiarities

But what we didn't like about the iron's design is the placement of the on/off switch. It's just a cheap lever you should move up and down that is inconveniently located underneath the handle. Therefore, it might be hard to manipulate the lever to turn on/off the unit. It would be better if the manufacturer had used the on/off button and placed it on the front part. This is the area where the iron needs some improvement.

Other than that, we haven't noticed any other design flaws. The iron is of perfect weight (2.38 lbs) to let you iron quite a lot of laundry. For quicker results, we would recommend you to s ort garments by fabric type and start with those that require low-temperature setting.

When changing from a high setting to a lower one, the iron needs a 5-minute rest, so it's better to gradually work up the temperature range rather than decrease it.

Sunbeam Classic GCSBCL-317-000 Steam Iron in the use

Maintaining the Iron

The Sunbeam GCSBCL-317-000 is backed with the all handy features to make maintenance safer and easier. Just like its more pricey counterparts, it's backed with a timed auto-off system (30 minutes), anti-drip system, and self-clean system. The self-clean system will remove the mineral build-up inside the iron for longer-lasting steam performance. It's recommended to use this feature once a month to maintain the peak performance of the iron.

While the Sunbeam GCSBCL-317-000 iron lacks some extra functions and is not very powerful, it offers all the basic features you may expect from an entry-level model. With its vertical steaming function, variable fabric settings, and an extra blast of steam option, it's an ideal iron for light jobs.

Detailed review of Sunbeam Classic GCSBCL-317-000 Steam Iron

Sunbeam Steam Master GCSBCL-202-000

Compact and handy.

The easy-gliding Sunbeam GCSBCL-202-000 Steam Master iron is a moderately-priced product that boasts extra power and extra steam output to help you make your garments look their best. With 1400 Watts of power and variable steam control, it can remove wrinkles quickly and easily.

It's slightly smaller than most other full-size Sunbeam irons and a bit easier to handle. Plus, it has a smaller water tank but high power capacity, which makes it ready for use quicker than standard models. It heats up in less than a minute and is capable of producing loads of steam. By the way, the water tank has a cover over the fill hole and is very easy to fill with bottled water.

The product offers v ariable steam for different fabrics. And when the fabric select dial is set to wool, cotton, or linen, you can benefit from using the additional shot of steam. The extra-powerful jet of steam will penetrate deeper into fibers to smoothen out even the most stubborn wrinkles.

To freshen up hanging clothes, upholstery, or drapery, the iron can function vertically as a garment steamer. However, the vertical steaming feature can bring you a number of splotches if the water tank is full. So we would recommend you to keep the water level a bit lower than 8/10ths of the fill line.

Review of Sunbeam Steam Master GCSBCL-202-000 Steam Iron

About Design

The color of this iron is striking and fresh, which makes the iron look quite modern. But beyond great aesthetics, you get some features that contribute to the ease of use.

For one, the iron features a pointed tip helping with detailing collars , cuffs, lapels, areas around buttons, and inside pleats. Also, this iron will be of great use for those who do a lot of quilting. They will always get flat and beautiful seams using this.

For two, the long 8-foot power cord can be retracted for neat storage. N o more winding up the wire or tripping over it and pulling it down. The retractable feature is especially useful when the day gets busy. The only complaint is that it does make the unit pretty tall.

Sunbeam Steam Master GCSBCL-202-000 Steam Iron in the use

The Sunbeam Steam Master 1400 Watt mid-size iron has almost everything to make operation worry-free. Backed with the Anti-drip technology, it ensures no leaks and accordingly no mess for hassle-free ironing.

Also, no burns or pulls. It uses the non-stick soleplate that glides easily over fabrics and prevents creases as you are ironing. Plus, the soleplate comes with a lifetime warranty, which is a good judgment of product quality.

For extra protection, the item is fitted with 3-way motion smart auto-off function. Therefore, the iron will be switched off if left unattended or set in an improper position.

With an anti-drip feature, quick heat-up time, pulls-free ironing, and 3-way motion smart technology, t he morning rush will go smoother than ever. So, we would definitely recommend this iron for busy households.

First of all, this model has a dual voltage feature that allows you to use it in the USA as well as in European countries. Secondly, the iron measures 6.53" x 3.4" x 3.11" and weighs 1.14 lbs so it won't take up much space in your suitcase nor will it add much load to your luggage. Probably, the most important thing that makes this iron an irreplaceable assistant on your trips is its functionality.

The Sunbeam appliance has 800-Watt power that is enough to handle creases even on firm fabric effortlessly. Just like the majority of portable travel irons out there, this model has variable temperature controls so that you can select the suitable one depending on the type of fabric you have at hand. It’s easy to set the necessary temperature with an easy-to-use dial located right at your fingertips. As soon as the iron reaches the heat level you’ve chosen, the indicator light will tell you that it’s ready to use.

Review of Sunbeam GCSBTR-100-000 Hot-2-Trot 800 Watt Compact Non-Stick Soleplate Travel Iron

Convenient to Use

One more thing that allows the Sunbeam appliance to handle any types of fabric is its non-stick soleplate that glides over any material effortlessly.

In addition to various temperature settings, this model has Shot of Steam feature that will definitely come in handy when it comes to ironing thick types of fabrics or deep creases. To use this option, you need to press two buttons located on both sides of the iron’s body. Thanks to this very design, the Sunbeam iron is convenient to use for right-handed as well as left-handed people. To use the steam feature, you also need to have water inside the iron’s reservoir. It is quite large and transparent so you always have full control over the water level.

Finally, don’t overlook the pointed tip of this model that makes ironing of small details such as pockets, collars, lapels, etc. as easy as anything.

Sunbeam GCSBTR-100-000 Hot-2-Trot 800 Watt Compact Non-Stick Soleplate Travel Iron in the use

Elaborate Design

Design is another important thing that should be taken into account when you choose a travel iron. We bet you want your new appliance not only to function properly but also to be convenient to use. The manufacturer of the Sunbeam Hot-2-Trot iron has done its best to make this model as usable as possible. So it has very compact dimensions to fit any palm size perfectly and comes with controls arranged conveniently right at your fingertips. You can easily reach the temperature dial, steam on/off switch, and Shot of Steam buttons when you need to use one of these options. It will also be easy for you to refill the water reservoir since its lid is located on the top of the iron.

Detailed review of Sunbeam GCSBTR-100-000 Hot-2-Trot 800 Watt Compact Non-Stick Soleplate Travel Iron

What Are Sunbeam Steam Irons?

Sunbeam is a big name on the market that has been around for more than 100 years now. And over these years, the company has been awarded and recognized. This is an American brand that produces high-quality electric home appliances widely used all over the world. Through cutting-edge innovation and intelligent design, the company aims to make it easier for customers to do their household chores, and ironing is one of them.

Knowing that your time is precious, Sunbeam folks develop innovative steam irons to keep your garments look perfect in the fastest and the most efficient way possible. The Sunbeam irons boast advanced technologies and ergonomic design to deliver you top-notch performance. For this review, we managed to pick the best of the best irons in different price points to suit any need and budget.

And to make the process more convenient, you can get a new, high-quality ironing board .

What Features to Compare

When it comes to Sunbeam steam irons, you don't get the basic choice between corded and cordless models. Currently, the Sunbeam company produces only corded models that are quite powerful and provide continuous heat-up. Accordingly, they allow you to iron for as long as you need without interruptions. All the reviewed models feature a long cord and do not limit you in movements that much.

However, with Sunbeam you get the option to choose between full-size and portable irons. Full-size models come with more capacious water tanks and usually provide more power and steam output. They are a bit pricier but more functional. As for portable models, they are great for travel use. They are compact and sufficiently powerful to tackle most ironing jobs whilst traveling. Plus, they can support the 110-220 Volt range, which makes them ideal for use overseas.

Convenience of Use

The weight and the size of a steam iron are very important factors for comfortable use. If the iron is too hefty, your hands can get tired pretty fast, which can become a dealbreaker if you often iron large butches of clothing per one go. That said, if the steam iron too light, it might be difficult for you to iron dense and heavy fabrics.

The soleplate design is also worth your consideration. The manufacturer uses a variety of materials for its irons - ceramics, stainless steel, and aluminum. Irons with ceramic soleplates are the most sophisticated and pricey. They fall into "the premium category" and ensure smoother glide and faster results as compared to other models.

Stainless steel soleplates ensure high-quality ironing too, however, they distribute heat a bit slower and deliver not that smooth results.

Soleplates made of aluminum are the cheapest option. They have good scratch- and scuff-resistance properties but considered to be a bit outdated. They are usually found in low-end irons.

Sunbeam steam irons are backed with lots of useful features, so you should think which of them you really need.

  • Shot of steam delivers an extra-powerful burst of steam to tackle tough wrinkles. This function is very useful if you often deal with linen or heavy fabrics.
  • Vertical steam is important for de-wrinkling drapes, upholstery, or long garments on hangers.
  • Auto shut-off will turn off the iron after some time of non-use. The most sophisticated models come with 3-way shut off function that powers off the iron if it's left in an incorrect position.
  • Anti-drip prevents water spilling and leaking from steam vents while ironing.
  • Self clean system can help you remove the mineral build-up from the water boiler for longer-lasting steam performance.

Did you know?

The long and bumby history of sunbeam.

Sunbeam, or to be more exact Sunbeam Products , is an American company that has been producing home appliances for more than 100 years now. During this time, the brand has endured a long history of growth, bankruptcy, and struggles.

The brand has evolved from the Chicago Flexible Shaft Company that originally made horse trimming and sheep shearing equipment. In 1921, the said company produced the first Sunbeam -branded household appliance. It was the Princess Electric Iron. The name "Sunbeam" appeared because the company wanted to rebrand its growing home appliance business and made people to understand their new concept. However, the Chicago Flexible Shaft company didn’t officially change its name to Sunbeam until 1946. That’s when the brand developed the slogan "Best Electric Appliances Made" .

The rapid growth of the company and its product range falls to the 1950s - 1960s. And by the end of the 1970s, it became the leading American manufacturer of small appliances for everyday life. However, by the end of the 20th century, Sunbeam was in severe crisis. The company had to be filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2001.

In 2002, the company emerged from bankruptcy but already as a privately-held company, American Household, Inc. Its household products division turned into the subsidiary Sunbeam Products, Inc. Today, the company is successful again. It's awarded and recognized all across the globe.

Ironing Tips from Sunbeam

Knowing everything about steam ironing, the Sunbeam company not only produces high-quality irons but is also ready to give some useful advice on clothes care. Here are some tips you may find helpful:

Before ironing garments, check their label and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. If there’re no ironing instructions, start with the lowest heat setting and test by ironing a small area. If everything is ok, gradually increase the heat level.

For better management, sort clothes by their fabric type and start with items requiring low-temperature settings and then work up the temperature range.

When using steam function, go with long, slow passes over the garments to allow the heated steam to penetrate and the heat of the soleplate to dry the excess moisture.

It’s better to iron linen inside out to prevent shine. Also, you can use a special ironing cloth or cotton fabric to reduce shine.

Before ironing, make sure that all the zippers are closed and the flap is flat.

Utilizing a spray starch can make the job easier.
