Let yourself be pampered and leave the campsite chores to us while you have a dip in our private swimming hole on the Wonnangatta River or just relax while shaded by the 100 year old elm trees which run along the river through our High Country basecamp.  

The ancient mountains in the Great Dividing Range, stretching endlessly to the horizon, ensure we're left breathless each time we travel to this stunning part of the world. Canvas Bell Tents

 Our luxurious canvas bell tents are set up and waiting for you when you select our Glamping Package.  We have a variety of sizes available to suit the needs of your group, cosy 3m for those flying solo, spacious 4m for couples or a huge 5m for families and groups of friends.  One of our friendly team members will give you a call after you make a group booking to work out how we can best accommodate your needs!

Wi-Fi Connectivity & Phone Reception

At 4WDining, we understand the pressures of modern life don't always allow us to just ignore our inbox for days so we've made sure our basecamp is equipped with a Wi-Fi hotspot and good phone reception. Just because you're on holiday in the middle of nowhere, doesn't mean you need to be out of contact, and should you need to make an urgent call when we're out on the tracks we even have a satellite phone available for customer use.

There's nothing better than relaxing under a hot shower and at 4WDining we make sure you're taken care of with gas powered instant hot water system and a two room shower cubicle that keeps your clothes and towel dry while you splash around.  Eco-friendly shampoo and body wash are provided, or alternatively you can always opt for a quick dip in our private swimming hole on the Wonnangatta River!  

Our basecamp features private toilet facilities which are kept spotlessly clean and ready for your use. Being in the great outdoors shouldn't mean you need to go for a walk with a shovel! Relax instead knowing that 4WDining have got you covered at both ends!

Vehicle Recovery & First Aid

The carefully planned routes we will take each day are selected to minimise the chance of a vehicle needing recovery, but just in case, our two support vehicles are fully equipped with winches, recovery kits and tools to keep you on track.  Your safety is our priority so we've also made sure all 4WDining staff have been trained in Wilderness First Aid by Survive First Aid  and carry comprehensive first aid kits.

Our team of experienced guides are ready to take you on an unforgettable adventure through this picturesque region of Australia.

Throughout the tour, you’ll have the opportunity to navigate your own 4WD vehicle while being guided by our experts. They have extensive knowledge of the area and will ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience.

The tour will take you through rugged mountains, lush valleys, and breath-taking river crossings. You’ll explore remote tracks and experience the thrill of off-roading in a stunning natural setting. Along the way, our guides will share their knowledge of the local flora, fauna, and history of the region.

Day before tour kicks off – meet up in Howqua Valley, Victoria for tour briefing and welcome dinner Day 1 – Travel high country tracks and trails Days 2-5 – Travel high country tracks and trails Day 6 – Travel high country tracks and trails with farewell dinner at Dargo Pub Day 7 – Finish at Bright VIC

This tour is self-cater with the exception of the first and last night.  Sorry, no camper trailers and no domestic pets allowed due to entering National Parks.

FREE pre and post trip inspections in our workshop for each vehicle registered for the trip. Inspections must be booked with the shop.

A comprehensive checklist will be provided upon booking.

If you do not have a long range or auxiliary fuel tank we suggest you bring 2 jerry cans for fuel. There will be times where we will be travelling for distances and potentially not have access to refuel.

• All terrain tyres
• 35mm lift or greater is all that is required

There are no bypasses for the tracks we are doing. There will be water crossings as part of the trip. This an intermediate trip in terms of difficulty, participating drivers should have previous 4WD experience before joining this trip. All drivers must be licensed and vehicles must be registered and in roadworthy condition.

Comprehensive Vehicle Insurance is required .

BOOKINGS ARE ESSENTIAL ON THIS TRIP

*Tracks and access to some attractions may become limited due to weather, track closures or other conditions which may make access to a particular area unsafe or unsuitable. In these instances we have backup routes to use with alternate attractions.

At home in the wild outdoors, Bruce fell in love with the Victorian High Country as a young Scout where he would often go camping. This love affair continued into his adulthood as he is still an enthusiastic hiker, camper, four wheel driver and fly fisher.

As a 25 year member of the Victorian Scout Four Wheel Drive Service Unit, he gained a lot of knowledge about the area running both day trips and extended trips. Not just limited to the Victorian Hills, he’s explored the furthest corners of the country in some of the roughest terrain – always with a grin on his face.

Grateful for his own opportunity to explore the bush and muck around as a kid, he’s been a Scout Leader for almost thirty-five years, introducing teenagers and children to nature and how to respect and enjoy it. His enthusiasm to show people the hidden gems in our environment took an exciting turn as he worked as a tour guide in the Kimberley Ranges for El Questro.

A guide to 4WD tracks in the Victorian High Country

Victoria’s High Country is the place where many of our best four-wheel drivers earned their spurs. Its alpine destinations and tracks – Wonnangatta, the Davies High Plains, Blue Rag, Mount Terrible – are legendary and not for the faint-hearted or inexperienced.

It’s a region where making a mistake can be fatal, or at the very least, expensive. Steep climbs and descents, lumbering over large rocks and ledges, deep water crossings where a snorkel is mandatory; this is the place where you can expand your 4WD repertoire once you’ve practiced on something a little bit easier. It would be a good idea if you’re not completely confident to go with a friend, a 4WD club or sign up for a Hema Tag-along tour.

Throughout the High Country are thousands of kilometres of four-wheel drive tracks. The status and conditions of these tracks are constantly changing. Many tracks are subject to seasonal closure, especially in winter, and some may be permanently closed. For the latest details on seasonal road closures in national parks visit Parks Victoria .

Below is an overview of what to expect on the many 4WD tracks winding their way through the High Country.

Wonnangatta Station

Experience steep climbs, river crossings, and discover a lush valley filled with wildlife as well as the beauty and history of Wonnangatta Station.

Davies High Plains

This is an iconic 4WD route that leads through many of the best areas of the High Country and will test your skills with some of the most challenging and rugged tracks you’ll find in Australia.

Billy Goat Bluff

Billy Goat Bluff is one of the steepest tracks in the High Country, so be prepared. It should only be attempted by experienced four-wheel drivers and in safe weather conditions.

Blue Rag Range Track

Beginning in the iconic town of Dargo (don't miss stopping in at the Dargo Hotel and Dargo River Inn), the Blue Rag Range Track is one of the most popular tracks in all of the High Country. It's a visual spectacle that can create some nervous moments for drivers attempting to scale its epic heights. But you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views over the High Country for your efforts.

Ingeegoodbee

Travel up the Ingeegoodbee track you will soon be in pure 4WD country. You're going to need to exercise every bit of your four-wheel driving experience on this run.

Benambra to Tom Groggin

The trek from Benambra to Tom Groggin goes through very steep 4WD-only country, so make sure you're properly equipped and prepared with our full track guide .

Sheepyard Flat to Jamieson

The 4WD track from Sheepyard Flat to Jamieson has steep climbs and interesting alternate routes. Make sure to stop at a couple of historical areas including Howqua Hills Historical Area, Fry’s Hut and the Mitchells Homestead ruins.

Mount Terrible

This track takes you from Jamieson to Woods Point in the heart of the High Country. This half-day trip requires low range and high clearance to negotiate. While skirting around the southern part of Lake Eildon, stop at the Goulburn and Jamieson rivers for trout fishing, canoeing and fossicking.

Stringybark Creek and Powers Lookout

The Stringybark Creek and Powers Lookout tracks are an easy drive from Mansfield that can be traversed by 2WD. The additional trek to Top Crossing Hut is for those who want to experience a rougher 4WD track.

Butcher Country Track

This trek will take you to the Butcher Country track by crossing rivers on several occasions, encountering steep climbs and confronting sharp descents.

Preparing for the Victorian High Country

Journeys through the High Country are not only challenging, but also offer the chance to appreciate the spectacular scenery. The Alpine National Park is a must for any visiting the area, featuring plenty of outdoor activities including walking and mountain bike tracks, horse-riding trails and much more.

Don’t forget that as much of the driving is low range work, your fuel consumption will be much higher than normal. If you don’t have long range tanks, take along some jerry cans. For the same reason, don’t set yourself an unachievable itinerary — most of it is slow going. Allow plenty of time and remember it may take a whole day to travel as little as 50km.

You’ll need a high clearance vehicle with low range and be careful to keep your wheels on the high ground. If you have a soft roader, forget it, and it shouldn’t be necessary to point out that this is not camper trailer territory for the most part.

Remember that some tracks are closed off during winter (or impassable because of heavy snow — snow chains and anti-freeze required), and that summer can be hot and dusty, making spring and autumn the optimal choices.

Please be aware that some tracks may be signposted with warnings for users of road damage. As always, keep your options open when travelling, and seek an alternative route if the track deteriorates or the weather suddenly changes. Taking along a chainsaw to clear tracks of fallen timber is a good idea as well.

Some key gear to take along are a UHF radios, satellite communicator, recovery equipment, spare jerry cans and plenty of water.

We have just completed the Lap of Australia in our Prado. We did your beginners course in May & it was the best money we ever spent.  It completely prepared us, with the knowledge you gave us we confidently crossed rivers, drove the Gibb River Road with no punctures & drove around Fraser Island without getting bogged. We look forward to taking our 4x4 adventures further.

Just need to let you know how much we enjoyed the Beach Safari Tour last weekend. Jenny and Wayne were excellent leaders - great refresher course in sand driving; really good comments about the areas we drove and great care when we had an issue with a fractured under body plate. The itinerary was very well paced, challenging and incredibly interesting - right down to the last forest expedition to the Walligat National Park lookout - fantastic forest drive and spectacular lookout. This tour was great to the last moment! Jenny and Wayne made sure everyone on the tour got the most from the experience, even including our stay at the Boogie Woogie Hotel. All in all, a great weekend with exceptional leaders, compatible group members and wonderful 4x4 driving experiences.

To anyone thinking of this type of adventure, you could not find a better way than to join Great Divide tours who offer exceptional customer service and support both on and of the tracks.

This was our second tour with Great Divide Tours in six weeks. Australia has many fine places to visit and I can't suggest a better way to see our country by travelling with your company.

This was our 5th GDT trip and it is up there equal with the best we have done. Fantastic country, great companions, facinating seeing the traditional owners aspects throughout - a completely new perpective for us and very welcome. Neill was very professional, a great tour leader and best of all a good bloke who made certain we all enjoyed our trip. Well done to all the team at GDT and thanks again.

Thought I would drop you a note to let you know we did our big Red Centre trip via the Oodnadatta track - a trip of a lifetime. Part of what made that possible was the understanding of and knowledge about 4Wdriving you gave us in the course we did in 2018 and also via your book Travelling the Outback. I reckon we could have probably bumbled our way through it as nervous wrecks,(as we saw some people doing it) but being clued up on set-up, driving and especially the safety gave us the confidence we needed to drive in all conditons allowing us to relax and really enjoy all 7000kms of the trip. So thank you to you and the team - keep up the good work!

I have visited this area for over 25 years and have put together a trip that includes the magic and splendour of this great land.

You will see Lake Cobbler, King River, the Man From Snowy River Hut, Lovick's Hut, Howitt High plains, Wonnangatta Valley, Historic Grant, the incredible Pinnacle Lookout and the most fabulous 4WD track in Australia (our secret destination).

Steep climbs, over 40 river crossings and the incredible scenery are features of this trip.

The itinerary includes two base camps beside beautiful mountain streams and a camp high amongst the snow gums.

Basic Requirements For This Tour

Fuel Fuel requirements for this trip are:- Diesel = 120 litres 4 and V6 petrol = 125 litres Straight 6 and V8 petrol = 150 litres

These figures include your fuel tank.

Spares/equipment A UHF radio – we can hire you a radio Carry a snatch strap and rated shackles (see our shop if you need recovery equipment) Spare Fan belts, fuel filter, oil and brake fluid

Driver experience Prior experience not necessary as we will assist you as we go or you might consider attending our driver training course. - Do you require Driver Training?

Food This is a self catered tour, bring your own food and drink requirements, we supply a gas BBQ for your use in camp.

Camping gear You need to supply your own camping gear, this is a camping tour there is no accommodation option. Carry warm clothing at all times.

Facilities There are pit toilets at our camp sites.

Refund Policy

Great Divide Tours reserves the right to cancel or alter any tour or course at any time. Great Divide Tours will determine if any refund is due if this action occurs.

In the event of you canceling a booking the following refund policy applies. Deposits are non refundable. If your booking can be reallocated to another participant then the deposit can be transferred to another tour of your choice which must be taken within 18 months of the original booked tour. The full tour fee is payable 2 weeks prior to the tour and is not refundable after this time. You should consider taking out Travel Insurance to cover any unforeseen circumstances including illness, vehicle problems or family matters.
