In full swing: The Ten Tenors to bring greatest hits tour to Popejoy Hall

Feb. 24—Cameron Barclay made it through opening night.

"I feel like we're in full swing now," he says. "We're at a happy medium with the tour right now and it's magnificent."

Barclay is a member of The Ten Tenors.

The Australian music ensemble has toured the world, releasing 15 albums and four DVDs since its formation in 1995.

They have headlined more than 2,000 concerts around the world, sold more than 3.5 million concert tickets and become renowned for their dynamic, choreographed performances and skillful ability to seamlessly transition from operatic arias to soulful ballads through to chart-topping pop and rock songs.

Joining Barclay in the line up is Michael Edwards, Boyd Owen, Daniel Belle, Adrian Li Donni, Ammon Bennett, Ben Clark, Joseph Naim, Sam Ward and Jesse Layt.

The Ten Tenors is set to take the stage at Popejoy Hall at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 1.

Over the course of its nearly 30-year career, the group has performed extensively in Australia, overseas and on television, and their signature brand of music featuring 10-part harmonies has been enjoyed by more than 90 million people.

They have also shared the stage with artists including Lionel Richie, Rod Stewart, Andrea Bocelli, Willie Nelson, Alanis Morissette and Christina Aguilera.

They have also appeared extensively on TV, including "The Today Show," Oprah's "Australian Adventure" and "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," as well as the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon for an audience of 32 million viewers and the 2012 UEFA Cup in Warsaw, Poland.

Barclay was the first New Zealander to join the group more than 10 years ago.

"It doesn't feel like time has gone by," he says. "It's always great to head out to tour in the United States. Everything is so different in America. The other night we ate at The Cheesecake Factory and I ordered spaghetti and meatballs. I think I got all of my calories for the week as the plate was bigger than me."

The group has been on tour since October and completed tours in South America and Australia.

"The Australia shows were Christmas shows," he says. "Depending on what time of year it is, the tour is adjusted for that. The idea of the show in the states is a greatest hits show."

A Ten Tenors performance runs about two hours filled with music and interaction with the audience.

"We sing about 26 numbers," he says. "In terms of choosing the repertoire, that's done by our managers. They build a show that flows well with plenty of ups and downs. There are hundreds of songs that we could choose from and it's a complete balance. We're getting the opportunity to do a disco mashup in this show. That's always fun."

The Ten Tenors are bringing their ‘greatest hits’ to Poway on Feb. 18

The Ten Tenors are coming from Australia to perform in Poway on Feb. 18.

The Australian group performs a variety of music genres

With a mix of classical, pop and rock, The Ten Tenors will be bringing their greatest hits to the Poway Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, Feb. 18.

The Australian group has been performing around the world for 28 years.

The 7 p.m. concert, part of the group’s three-week tour of the West Coast, will likely include songs such as Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” The Righteous Brothers’ “Unchained Melody,” Glen Campbell’s “Wichita Lineman” and “Bring Him Home” from the musical “Les Misérables.

“It’s very varied, with lots of different songs. It will be an exciting show,” said Michael Edwards, one of the singers and the group’s musical director.

While his personal favorites during performances vary, Edwards said he “loves singing opera” but also enjoys “Wichita Lineman” because of how the song has been arranged.

“We have contemporary pop (songs) that are familiar to the audience, but arranged in completely different ways,” Edwards said. “I love Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ I love performing it every night.”

Some of the songs are sure to get audience members on their feet. Edwards said the group enjoys it when the audience starts dancing because they want everyone to have a good time.

“We have a lighting guy whose designs are absolutely spectacular,” he said. “It is a full show, with lots going on … It is not us just standing there singing. It is not what people will expect.”

In between songs the singers will chat a bit with the audience, he said.

“We enjoy it and don’t take the show too seriously,” Edwards said, adding the singers build off the audience’s energy.

Michael Edwards has been a member of The Ten Tenors since 2014.

Edwards joined The Ten Tenors in late 2014.

“It’s been nearly 10 years, crazy how the time has flown,” he said when recently interviewed virtually while in Australia.

“One of the things I love about singing is performing with people,” he said. “I was in choirs a lot while growing up, so I enjoy the collaboration. I love singing with The Ten Tenors because we get solo experiences as well. All the guys get their different moments on their own, singing on their own and singing with other people.”

Edwards said while he has sung in recitals, “they can be a bit of a lonely experience,” so he finds this group a pleasant contrast.

“The guys get along really well and we function well off-stage,” he said. “Singing with this bunch of people has kept me coming back.”

In addition to Edwards, the other singers are Cameron Barclay (who is also their choreographer), Daniel Belle, Ammon Bennett, Ben Clark, Jesse Layt, Adrian Li Donni, Joseph Naim, Boyd Owen and Sam Ward. While a couple have been in The Ten Tenors for two years, most have been there five years or longer, Edwards said.

They are accompanied by a pianist, drummer and recorded tracks.

The singers’ professional experiences vary. According to their bios, some have performed in operas, others in musicals including on Broadway, and all have extensive training. When not performing with The Ten Tenors they often have solo performances, teach music or do stage productions, Edwards said.

Edwards has been singing since age 8, when he started performing with the Australian Boys Choral Institute. Later, he was in the National Youth Choir of Australia, Adelaide Chamber Singers and The Consort of Melbourne. He studied at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and was cast in several Victorian Opera Chorus productions.

As the group’s musical director, a position Edwards has held since 2018, he runs the rehearsals, allocates vocal parts, works on their harmonies and handles other duties required to put on the shows. He works closely with the group’s producer, music arrangers and choreographer.

While this is the group’s first time performing in Poway, they have done concerts in San Diego before.

“I love coming to new theaters and love it in California,” Edwards said.

The Ten Tenors will perform at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18 in the Poway center, 15498 Espola Road.

Tickets are $50-$85 for adults; $43-$72 for seniors (65-plus), active duty military and students (ages 13-21); and $25-$43 for youths (12 and under). A $9 handling and facilities restoration fee will be added to each ticket.

Purchase tickets at powayonstage.org or contact the box office at 858-748-0505 from 1 to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

The TEN Tenors return to Popejoy Hall to perform their Greatest Hits LIVE on Friday, March 1, 2024 at 7:30pm. Formed in 1995, the talented Australian ensemble has performed over 2,500 times across 34 countries. Their current tour celebrates decades of artistic innovation and excellence with a collection of their greatest songs performed live.

The Greatest Hits LIVE performance features a mix of the group’s most-requested songs ranging from opera, pop, rock, and more. Songs including “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Bring Him Home,” “Funiculì Funiculà,” “The Boxer,” “Unchained Melody,” and more offer an opportunity for the tenors to combine choreography with their dynamic voices. The musical arrangements for the group include their signature ten-part harmonies, as well as striking solos.

The TEN Tenors quickly rose to stardom with extensive tours across the Australian continent combined with media appearances. Since their debut, the group has sold over 3.5 million tickets, released 4 different live-recording DVDs of their performances, and released 15 albums, several of which have reached either gold or platinum status. They’ve also performed alongside artists such as Lionel Richie , Rod Stewart , Andrea Boccelli, Willie Nelson , Alanis Morissette and Christina Aguilera .

Audiences fell in love with their ability to transform iconic songs into multi-part harmonies. The music they choose also appeals to a wide audience, as the ensemble can seamlessly shift their voices from opera arias to popular hits. This ability also provides some excitement at live performances, as audiences don’t know what piece will be next.

The TEN Tenors' current line-up includes Michael Edwards , Cameron Barclay, Boyd Owen, Daniel Belle, Adrian Li Donni , Ammon Bennett, Ben Clark , Joseph Naim, Sam Ward , and Jesse Layt. Five of these performers, Barclay, Belle, Edwards, Owen, and Ward, are returning to Popejoy following the group’s 2022 Love Is In the Air performance.

Tickets for The TEN Tenors are on sale for $79, $65, $45, and $25. Tickets may be purchased online at  popejoypresents.com , in person at the UNM Ticket Offices located at the UNM Bookstore, or by calling (505) 277-4569. TEN Tenors Greatest Hits tour Moncrieff Entertainment Centre Bundaberg

The TEN Tenors will perform their Greatest Hits tour featuring all the fan favourites when they return to the Moncrieff Entertainment Centre on 25 June.

The Tenors are renowned for their dynamic performances of some of the great songs of all time , accompanied by spectacular Broadway-style choreography.

The Greatest Hits tour will feature the most loved and requested songs the Tenors have performed across a 28-year-history and from across multiple genres of music including opera, pop and rock.

Fan favourites include Bohemian Rhapsody, Hallelujah, Perfect, In my Life, Here’s to the Heroes, Shallow, Pearl Fishers Duet, Funiculì, Funiculà, Largo AL Factotum and, of course, Nessun Dorma.

TEN Tenors producer D-J Wendt said the group was known for its fun musical melodies, which could play for up to nine minutes and include up to 23 songs mashed up together.

“The camaraderie and feeling of being a Tenor can be likened to the combination of the best parts of a strong family bond, a football team and a secret society rolled in to one,” D-J said.

“This Greatest Hits tour is a celebration of the history and achievements of The Ten Tenors and an opportunity to say thank you to fans and music lovers across the world who show their love and support by coming to our shows time and time again.

“Pulling this show together has been a nostalgic trip through history, looking back at some of the more than 3500 shows the Tenors have performed over the years.

“We can’t wait to bring this new show to audiences across Australia and relive these highlights.”

Since the group's inception in 1995, The TEN Tenors have worked passionately and toured extensively to bring unique shows to audiences at home and abroad.

First touring Australia in 1997, the Tenors then took their show to Europe in 2001, thrilling audiences in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and they have graced the Moncrieff Entertainment Centre’s stage multiple times and are excited to return next month.
