A favorite of Northern Europeans — particularly Germans — seeking respite from the long, cold, dark winters. It offers beaches, magnificent scenery, adventure, peace, and springtime temperatures the year-round.

Tenerife has got so much going for it: 365 days of warm weather, things to do for the young and the mature people, good beaches, great nightlife, coastal walkways that are great for walking and ideal for wheelchairs. If you don't want the high nightlife there are quieter areas you can go to.

What is the best way to get there?

There are two airports on Tenerife, Tenerife South (Reina Sofia) near Los Cristianos and Tenerife North (Los Rodeos) by La Laguna. Buses connect the airports to the main cities.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring. Tenerife’s warm climate makes it an attractive destination all year round. Easter and summer are the busiest times, due to families taking advantage of the school break, so if you want fewer crowds, aim for spring or fall. Spring temperatures are typically in the low and sit somewhere around 70 Fahrenheit (21.1 Celsius).

Having your own vehicle is ideal for getting to the more remote corners of the region. There are a number of rental companies on the island, or, for the best price, book before you leave home.

TITSA, the island’s public transport system is cheap and reliable. If you plan to make multiple trips, it's worth buying a plastic Ten+ Travel Card, which gives you discounted fares on almost all bus routes. You have to swipe your card when you board and when you get off. The same card can be used by several users.

Taxis are plentiful, safe, and reliable. You can hail them on the street or call ahead.

Public transit

Let passengers off before boarding. Offer your seat to elderly and pregnant people and to those with disabilities.

Is Tenerife worth visiting?

It’s probably one of the questions that come to mind when you hear so many people talking about how good their holiday to Tenerife was.

I thought the same, but I can confirm that Tenerife is worth a visit. I fell in love with this island!

Its breathtaking landscapes, mild weather all year round, delicious traditional food and atmosphere make it a favourite destination.

But there are more reasons to visit Tenerife, and I’m going to tell you all of them.

1. the diverse climate.

One of the reasons why people choose Tenerife is the weather. 

If you live in a cold and rainy place and want to escape winter, you can do so by travelling to Tenerife.

If you want a summer holiday, Tenerife is fantastic too. Although it’s warm, the temperatures are more manageable than in the south of Spain. 

However, I learned during my trip to Tenerife that there are up to 28 microclimates across the island. 

It can be sunny and warm in the south, rainy in the north, and there might be snow near Mount Teide. It’s amazing. 

Due to these microclimates , Tenerife has completely different landscapes from one side to another side of the island. You can find diverse plants and animals in different locations.

Lush green colours predominate in the north of Tenerife, whereas desert-like landscapes are more common in the south.

2. The wide variety of beaches

Did you know Tenerife has incredible beaches? 

Being an island, you can expect a wide variety of beaches to choose from.

You can find black sand beaches, like Playa Jardin in Puerto de la Cruz, whose sand is black because of the El Teide volcano. 

However, you can also enjoy golden sand beaches like Playas de las Teresitas in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Tenerife’s coastline is spectacular, and you’ll be amazed by its beauty and uniqueness. Each beach offers a different experience. Whether you want a quiet or busy beach near the city, Tenerife has it all.

Surf the waves, soak up the sun or go on a scenic hiking trail to admire the cliffs and rock formations. 

3. It has one of the best waterparks in Europe 

Tenerife is home to the biggest water park in Europe.

Siam Park is among Tenerife’s most visited attractions, which isn’t surprising. 

This water park has all sorts of slides, pools and other fun attractions to keep you entertained all day.

If you love a bit of adrenaline, you must go to attractions like Kinnaree and the famous Tower of Power. 

The latter is a 28-metre-high water slide in which you’ll pass through an impressive aquarium with sharks and rays.

Siam Park also offers family-friendly attractions and a relaxing area like the Champagne Club, where you can lay in comfortable Balinese beds and sip a glass of champagne. 

4. It’s heaven for nature lovers

Why Tenerife? One of the reasons I could easily return to Tenerife is the natural landscapes. If I had more time, I would have taken a road trip across Tenerife , so that’s next on my list when I’m back.

I think it’s the best way to discover the natural beauty of Tenerife! Each landscape offers a unique experience. 

The Teide National Park is the most popular as it has the biggest volcano on the island, El Teide. And as magical as El Teide is, there are other enchanting natural parks and protected spaces. 

Another unmissable location for nature lovers is Anaga Natural Park. One of the best hiking trails in this park is Sendero de los Sentidos (Trail of the Senses).

A beautiful forest route which is accessible to everyone, including travellers with disabilities, and it immerses you in nature. 

5. It has the second-best carnival in the world

If you love carnival, you won’t be disappointed by visiting Tenerife. 

Santa Cruz de Tenerife hosts the second-best carnival in the world every February and attracts people from around the world. The capital is the carnival epicentre, but celebrations occur in different locations across the island too.

Expect lively parades with locals wearing unique fancy dresses and make-up, upbeat music and fun attractions. 

You’ll be amazed how some people wear heavy costumes (some of them can weigh up to 100 kilograms!)

However, wearing these costumes can be worth it. Locals get very serious about the main carnival competition because they will receive amazing prizes if they’re given the title of “Reina del Carnaval” (the Queen of Carnival).

Join the locals and have a fantastic time during the carnival in Tenerife. 

6. Stargazing is truly amazing

With numerous natural spaces, Tenerife is a great place to stargaze.

There are companies that offer stargazing tours in different locations on the island.

However, if you don’t have much time and want the best place to watch the stars, go to El Teide. It has amazing viewpoints, perfect weather conditions, and you feel immersed in nature.

The best time for stargazing in Tenerife is the first two weeks of August because there are high chances of seeing shooting starts. However, this is an activity that you can do all year round.

This fantastic Teide stargazing tour offers a delicious Canarian meal on your way to El Teide, and then you stop to watch the sunset and learn all about night sky observation.

7. The food is delicious

When thinking of Canarian cuisine, patatas arrugadas (wrinkled potatoes) is the first dish that comes to mind. They’re served alongside green and red mojo sauces with many meals. 

Despite these delicious potatoes that are a must-try, there are many other delicious traditional dishes in Tenerife and the Canary Islands. 

Fish is another star ingredient in Tenerife. Surrounded by the sea, it isn’t a surprise. Cherne is one of the most typical fish. 

But if you visit the mountainside, you’ll also find hearty stews, like ropa vieja (chickpea and meat stew), and meat dishes like carne de cabra compuesta (goat stew). 

Last but not least, Tenerife has numerous traditional desserts, such as bienmesabe, and its famous coffee, called barraquito, a coffee made with milk, condensed milk, Licor 43 and cinnamon.

8. The Mount Teide

There’s no visit to Tenerife without seeing El Teide. 

The truth is you can see El Teide from different locations across the island.

However, it is worth going to El Teide National Park, which features the Teide-Pico Viejo Mount, the highest peak in Spain and one of the tallest volcanic structures in the world.

El Teide has such a particular setting and landscape that it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the 12 Treasures of Spain.

There are fantastic things to do in Teide National Park – from going on the cable car to enjoy the views of the volcano and hiking to paragliding and stargazing.

9. It’s a paradise for surfers

Do you like surfing? You’ll love Tenerife. It’s a fantastic destination to surf all year round and one of the best surfing spots in Europe, alongside Tarifa (Cadiz).

Whether you’ve never surfed in your life or have some experience, there are great surf schools in Tenerife, and most of them will always take you to the quieter spots and at the best times

Some of the best spots in Tenerife South are Playa de la Tejita, La Izquierda and La Fitenia, whilst if you’re looking for the best places to surf in Tenerife North, go to Bajamar and El Arenal.

10. It’s rich in culture

Before heading to Tenerife, I didn’t know much about its culture because you don’t often hear about it. Everyone knows Tenerife for its amazing weather, beaches and Teide volcano.

However, taking a tour with a local guide made me realise there is so much history and culture behind Tenerife, and if you have the time, I recommend taking a tour because it’s the best way to learn about it.

There are plenty of historic buildings that tell you about the Guanches, the indigenous inhabitants of Tenerife and the Canary Islands, and the influences from South America and other parts of the world.

One of the best places to learn about Tenerife is San Cristóbal de la Laguna, a city near Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and used to be the former capital of the island.

Another must-see place in Tenerife for history buffs is Orotava, one of the oldest towns in the Canary Islands.

11. Tenerife is home to beautiful villages

Off-the-beaten-track destinations often offer a more authentic experience, and they can also have interesting and historical buildings that are worth checking out. 

Tenerife has several towns and villages with incredible buildings rich in history and breathtaking landscapes.

If you’re into nature and hiking, head to Masca. It’s one of my favourite places on the island. You won’t believe the landscape is hundred per cent natural and not human. This place resembles Macchu Picchu, and it’s truly a hidden gem .

If you’re into history, go to Orotava. The streets of Orotava are home to several historic buildings, including Casa de los Balcones , a beautiful museum that showcases Canarian architecture and art. You can walk into the building and see how previous generations used to live.

12. Its lively atmosphere

The last but not least reason to visit Tenerife is its vibrant atmosphere.

You’ll always find a fantastic atmosphere if you visit cities like Santa Cruz de Tenerife or Puerto de la Cruz. Expect live music on the streets and locals eating in outdoor terraces enjoying the sunshine, and the nightlife doesn’t disappoint either.

On top of this, Tenerife becomes even more lively with the carnival or other traditional events such as Fiestas de la Candelaria, Alfombras del Corpus and Baile de Las Libreas, which take place every year.

Whether you're hoping to wine taste and explore on your honeymoon, visit water parks and hike volcanoes with your family or simply have a getaway filled with sunshine and cocktails with friends, Tenerife is the island for you.

Getting there and around the Canary Islands

Tenerife is home to not one but two international airports. There's Tenerife Norte (TFN) and Tenerife Sur (TFS). As each of their names suggests, Norte is in the north of the island in the capital of Santa Cruz. The Sur airport is near the southern tip of the island, closer to popular resort areas such as Los Cristianos, Playa de las Americas and the Costa Adeje.

As previously mentioned, United Airlines unveiled a new route from Newark, New Jersey, to Tenerife Sur three times a week. The route launches on June 9.

This is the easiest and fastest way to reach Tenerife, which is closer to Africa than Europe. Or, you can always take advantage of Iberia's award chart sweet spots, flying business class starting at 34,000 Avios one-way from a U.S. hub like Chicago (ORD) or New York (JFK) to Madrid, then hop over to Tenerife North (TFN) or Tenerife South (TFS), a flight that takes two-and-a-half to three hours.

You can also combine a visit to Tenerife with another European hub, as many flights operate on both full-fare and low-cost carriers from destinations like Frankfurt, London, Paris, Milan and Amsterdam, among many others. Most visitors coming from European destinations tend to fly into the south airport, which caters more to tourists. However, if you get an amazing deal for the north airport and plan to rent a car, it's about a one-hour drive to some of the more popular resort areas in the south.

Renting a car is essential if you'd like to explore. Public transport on Tenerife is limited to buses that often run on 'island time,' especially on weekends and holidays. Popular car rental companies like Hertz and Avis have a presence at both airports. However, local car rental chains like Plus Car and Orlando tend to be more affordable.

That being said, if you'd prefer to permanently park yourself in a beach lounger at your all-inclusive hotel, you may not need to rent a car. Instead, take a taxi from either airport to your hotel, as there are no ride-hailing programs on the island.

Where to stay

In general, most visitors prefer staying in the south, mainly because the weather is often sunnier and less windy in this area of the island. The west side is also popular for travelers. Looking for all the tourist amenities? Consider areas like Los Cristianos, Playa de las Americas, Los Gigantes and the surrounding Costa Adeje.

If you're looking to explore Tenerife's wineries, tour the capital of Santa Cruz or hike in Anaga Park, you could consider a base in the north of the island.

Most of the resorts are located in the south and west of the island. For a more local stay, book a home or apartment in the north of the island. Santa Cruz provides all the amenities of an urban oasis, while San Cristóbal de La Laguna, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has colorful, vibrant homes reminiscent of the Caribbean and a gorgeous cathedral.

Wine-lovers should consider the rolling hills of Icod de los Vinos. There are rentals in the sunnier south in quieter, less touristy areas such as Las Galletas or surfer enclave El Médano.

Travelers with Marriott points might opt for the Ritz-Carlton Abama (rates start at 40,000 points per night) and the Sheraton La Caleta (rates start at 30,000 points per night). Both of these luxury hotels offer gorgeous views of the sea, with amenities such as saltwater pools and fitness centers.

For a base in the north, the AC Tenerife, which opened in 2021, is an affordable, basic option for Marriott fans (rates start at 25,000 points per night, but it's better to pay cash as rates usually cost well under $100 per night). The hotel features a small rooftop pool and offers a fairly ample breakfast buffet spread, too.

Another beachfront option is the Hard Rock Tenerife, which boasts a trio of swimming pools and the Rock Spa. The H10 hotel brand has a few hotels throughout the island apt for both families and couples such as the H10 Big Sur and the H10 Costa Adeje.

Finally, the Melia Palacio de Isora is another luxury option that caters to all types of travelers, with a special floor for adults only called the Red Level and another just for families called the Red Level for Families.

What to do and see

What's the top activity to do in Tenerife? The beach ! The island is covered with both black sand volcanic beaches, as well as stretches of golden sand. Here are some of the best:

• For windsurfing, kite surfing and surfing: El Médano.
• For white sands, shallow waters and all the amenities: Los Cristianos and Las Vistas (walk between them).
• For white sands in the north: Playa de Las Teresitas.

• For windswept black sands: Playa de la Tejita.
• For a hidden gem: La Pelada.
• For restaurant and shopping options: Playa del Fanabe.
• For far-flung, northern black sands: Playa Benijo (spot monolithic sea rocks here!).

Tenerife is perfect for travelers who love adventure. Besides offering all sorts of water sports like diving and snorkeling, kite, wind and regular surfing , paragliding is a popular activity, as is canyoning on Tejina Mountain. You can also explore an ancient lava dome system of craters and caves at Cueva del Viento.

Hiking is another favorite activity in Tenerife. The most famous spot is one of the tallest peaks in Spain, the Teide volcano. There are many paths of varying lengths and difficulties to choose from. For those wanting a more relaxed experience, there's a cable car that takes you almost to the very top.

Note that a trip to the top summit requires a permit, and it's best to buy your cable car tickets well in advance for the beginning of your trip. Make sure to check the day of to confirm the cable car is operating (it often shuts down due to weather conditions), rebooking for later in your trip if it's not.

Anaga Rural Park is a verdant area to hike. It leads you through twists and turns in varying microclimates past one-of-a-kind mosses and laurel trees, fertile valleys and rocky passes, offering stunning views of the ocean below. Wear layers here — while others may be sunning on the beach, it can be freezing and rainy in areas of this natural park.

Masca is one of Tenerife's most beautiful mountaintop villages . Hike the area, or simply drive through the Macizo de Teno mountains and enjoy the impressive scenery. Certain hikes here offer views of Los Gigantes, towering oceanside cliffs on the island's western side.

Families will enjoy visiting the Siam Water Park, one of Europe's largest waterparks. Families with older children may also enjoy quad adventures or stargazing experiences. Santa Cruz, the island's capital, is home to the Natural History Museum. The city also features many 15th-century buildings and palm-tree-lined squares ideal for a stroll on a warm, sunny afternoon.

What to eat and drink

Canarias cuisine is hearty and delicious. You'll want to sample papas arrugadas ("wrinkled" potatoes in a delicious, tangy Canarian sauce, Mojo picón), and ropa vieja, a meat dish also popular in Cuba. Of course, you can't go wrong with fresh seafood, either.

Make sure to dine in some of the most traditional restaurants found in the north of the island , known as guanchinches. These no-frills eateries aren't fancy, featuring simple foods with a limited menu. However, they're the heart and soul of the island's gastronomy.

Traditionally, these restaurants also cultivate their own wine, so make sure to indulge in a glass (or a few). Some of the best ones to try are the colorful Restaurante Bodegón Casa Tomás, famous for its ribs in mojo picón sauce, or Guachinche 3 Dragos (try the fresh cheese or stewed octopus).

Tenerife's volcanic soil is ideal for wine cultivation. Some of the best wineries are in the north of the island, like Bodegas Lomo or Bodegas Monje. The latter offers a gorgeous outdoor patio where you can taste wine while admiring the sunset.

Bottom line

Tenerife makes for a versatile vacation spot: One where you can either lounge on the beach for days on end, enjoy wine-tasting and waterparks, or explore caves, forests, beaches and beyond.

Tenerife must be one of the most underrated and overlooked destinations in Europe. It has sea, sun, scenic grandeur, excellent and affordable cuisine, and a raunchy nightlife.

A favorite of Northern Europeans — particularly Germans — seeking respite from the long, cold, dark winters. It offers beaches, magnificent scenery, adventure, peace, and springtime temperatures the year-round.

Tenerife has got so much going for it: 365 days of warm weather, things to do for the young and the mature people, good beaches, great nightlife, coastal walkways that are great for walking and ideal for wheelchairs. If you don't want the high nightlife there are quieter areas you can go to.

What is the best way to get there?

There are two airports on Tenerife, Tenerife South (Reina Sofia) near Los Cristianos and Tenerife North (Los Rodeos) by La Laguna. Buses connect the airports to the main cities.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring. Tenerife’s warm climate makes it an attractive destination all year round. Easter and summer are the busiest times, due to families taking advantage of the school break, so if you want fewer crowds, aim for spring or fall. Spring temperatures are typically in the low and sit somewhere around 70 Fahrenheit (21.1 Celsius).

Having your own vehicle is ideal for getting to the more remote corners of the region. There are a number of rental companies on the island, or, for the best price, book before you leave home.

TITSA, the island’s public transport system is cheap and reliable. If you plan to make multiple trips, it's worth buying a plastic Ten+ Travel Card, which gives you discounted fares on almost all bus routes. You have to swipe your card when you board and when you get off. The same card can be used by several users.

Although English is widely spoken in resort areas, learning a few Spanish words and phrases goes a long way.

If you're staying in the southern part of Tenerife, which is where the island's main tourist resorts are located, it's quite easy to get around and explore various areas.

Depending on where you're staying you can even walk between places, like from Costa Adeje to Los Cristianos, or from Playa La Arena to Los Gigantes. 

If you want to move around you can also hire a car (although parking can be difficult in most resorts), use the bus (guagua) or you can use the local taxi.

The famous Siam Park was named as the best water park in the world for the second year in a row. You can visit the park at any time of the year, as the pools are heated to a comfortable 24 Celsius. We usually go to Tenerife in winter, so we visited the park in January and February and we had a great time, as it's far less crowded than in summer (just be sure to choose a sunny day for your visit if you are heading over in winter).

Aqualand is usually best suited for people traveling with younger kids, as they also have included access to a dolphin show at the same price. Some people recommend Aqualand over Siam Park because they had more attractions for younger kids, but Siam Park has recently opened a brand new area for kids, so if we had to pick one, we definitely prefer Siam Park over Aqualand, but it's good to know that you have options.

Loro Parque is considered to be the best zoo in the world, as it was voted on first position by Tripadvisor users who have visited. We have visited Loro Parque several times and we loved it every time, all the animals are well taken care of and they have several shows that you can attend.

Jungle Park is another animal park in Tenerife, this time located in the South, very close to Los Cristianos. The park is beautifully landscaped and it truly looks like a jungle in some areas, with the luxurious vegetation and colorful flowers. 

The park offers a free bus transfer from several resorts in Tenerife South, so it's easy to get there even if you don't have a rental car.

This is a MUST while in Tenerife. You get to see a unique volcanic landscape, with lots of great views, with Mt Teide at the center of it all.

Explore Mount Teide's most iconic places with an official guide, then hop on the cable car, which takes you almost to the summit. The cable car takes you all the way to 3.555 m, which will give you spectacular views over the national park. We recommend that you wear comfortable shoes and also bring a jacket or a cardigan, no matter the time of year since it can be very windy sometimes.

If you want to climb on top of Mount Teide, you should reserve a permit ahead of time. 

Don't miss the chance to see the cliffs in Los Gigantes or Acantilados de Los Gigantes as they are named in Spanish. You can spend some time on the beach (Playa Los Guios), but if you want to enjoy one of the best views of the cliffs you should head over to Mirador de Archipenque (this is the perfect spot to watch the sunset, as it offers a lovely view of La Gomera, the neighboring island).

From the marina in Los Gigantes, you also have the option to go on boat trips and the cruise by sail boat is one of the most popular in this part of Tenerife.

Masca is a picturesque village , settled inland in a location where residents of Tenerife used to hide when they were being attacked by pirates. If you have a hire car you can get there on your own, but you should try to get there as early in the morning as possible, otherwise, it gets really crowded.

The views are spectacular and there is a restaurant overlooking the valley, where you have to go even if only for a cup of coffee (the view is definitely included in the above-average price, but it's worth it).

No holiday to Tenerife would be complete without a boat trip where you can see dolphins and whales in their natural habitat. The waters between Tenerife and La Gomera are ideal for spotting these majestic mammals and this 3 hours cruise also includes unlimited drinks, champagne, snacks and hotel pick-up.

A visit to Garachico is like going back in time: this small town has a rather dark history, being destroyed not once, but two times by volcanic eruptions.

Walk on its narrow streets, eat great ice cream on the seashore, and if you're visiting during the summer months, go swimming in the natural pools.

The natural pools in Garachico are actually a huge Tenerife attraction in summer, and they are popular not only with tourists but with the locals as well, so be prepared for big crowds, especially during those hot July and August weekend days.

El Drago or the Dragon Tree is the island's most popular tree. The best view is the one from the town square, so there's no need to pay to see it up close. We totally recommend spending some time visiting Icod de los Vinos , a small town where you can see some buildings with typical Canarian architecture and wooden balconies. Garachico and Icod de los Vinos are situated very close to one another, so you should visit them on the same day.

Snorkel alongside turtles in a non-intrusive way on a kayaking adventure in Tenerife that respects the animal's welfare and freedom. 

Home to up to 5 different species of dolphins, including bottlenose dolphins, the waters just off the island’s coast are ideal to marvel at these lovable creatures.

Take a submarine dive in the lesser-explored waters of southern Tenerife.

This is a pretty unique experience and an exciting thing to do with kids in Tenerife, since they will be so thrilled to hop on a submarine and see the most exciting marine creatures in their natural environment. 

The submarine dive takes around 50 minutes and it's a great activity for the entire family while on holiday in Tenerife.

The town of San Cristobal de la Laguna is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it deserves at least a few hours to walk around and see the beautiful buildings. If you're with the kids you may want to visit the Museum of Science and the Cosmos and why not also the Museum of History and Anthropology. 

The Anaga forest is one of the most magical places in Tenerife, with its laurel trees and wild beaches like the popular Benijo beach. If you have rented a car for your holiday, don't miss a day trip to this part of the island as it's one of Tenerife's most amazing places to see and visit. Look up at the weather forecast before you make the trip though, as sometimes it can be cloudy and foggy (especially during the winter months).

Did you know that Tenerife is a great location for stargazing? 

Watching the sunset in Teide National Park while sipping from a glass of champagne is really a unique experience, the views are incredible, you get to see the best sights inside the park and then you get to have a nice dinner, followed by a session of stargazing.

We went on this tour with Teide by Night a few years ago and our guide was really funny and knowledgeable, so we not only found out a lot of new things about Tenerife, but we were really blown away by the stargazing experience inside the national park.

If you're having a cloudy day in the south and you don't know what to do in Tenerife besides laying by the pool, you could go and visit the island's capital - Santa Cruz de Tenerife . You have many things to do, including great shopping opportunities (the only Primark on the island is located inside Meridiano Shopping Center).

Tenerife is an amazing destination for hiking and the best time for this activity is between October and May when the temperatures during the day are ideal for walking (during the summer it can be too hot).

We have an entire article about the best hiking trails in Tenerife (in our opinion, based on the hikes we did) but even out of those we definitely recommend you do the Chinyero Loop and the hike through the Enchanted Forest El Pijaral (Bosque Encantado), in order to see up close the beauty of the Anaga forest.

In case you don't want to hike or you just don't have the proper hiking equipment with you... you can also walk and discover the beauty of Tenerife by choosing an easy path. We've walked from Los Gigantes to Playa San Juan (not in one go, but it is possible) and we've walked almost the entire southern coast, another town or resort every day, usually walking by the ocean on the promenade (when possible).

The carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is considered the second largest in the world after the one in Rio de Janeiro and it is truly an amazing experience, especially if you want to mingle with the locals and party all night long. We've participated in the 2019 edition of the carnival and we loved the parades (especially the one on Friday, when the carnival is inaugurated), and then of course we loved the parties in the various squares in the city, the costumes, and the music.

La Gomera is the island that you see every day if you are staying in the south of Tenerife. The island is much smaller compared to Tenerife, but it hides tremendous beauty, an amazing national park and forest and winding roads that lead to lookout points with modern architecture.

From Tenerife South, you can book a day tour that includes the ferry ride, transfer on the island in order to see all the best places, and lunch at Mirador Abrante (probably the most Instagrammed place on La Gomera).

The view from Punta de Teno is amazing, as you get to see the cliffs of Los Gigantes from the other side. You can't visit the lighthouse, unfortunately, but the view is enough to be worth the drive there. There is also a small and pebbly beach there and when the ocean is calm you can swim here while enjoying the sight of the Los Gigantes Cliffs.

We have been to Punta de Teno several times, as it's one of our favorite places to visit in Tenerife, due to the spectacular views of the ocean and the cliffs, and we can tell you that the experience varies a lot depending on the weather. The place still looks impressive even when it's cloudy or rainy (some may even like the dramatic colors), but for a first-time experience, we definitely recommend visiting Punta de Teno on a dry and sunny day.

Most of the tourist resorts in Tenerife have a weekly market, where you can buy all sorts of things, from clothes, souvenirs, and handmade items to fake bags and watches, so if you want to do some shopping while there, check out the list of markets in Tenerife to see which is the nearest one to you.

Los Cristianos, Adeje, Alcala, and El Medano, all have a market and the items sold there are very similar since most vendors move daily from one market to the other.

What is a Guachinche you may ask?

Well, a Guachinche is a type of local place to eat, specific to the island of Tenerife, or more specifically to the north of the island. A Guachinche should only serve local food, which should be accompanied by local wine (most of the Guachinches actually produce their own wine and this is a way to sell the wine directly to the public).

Most of the Guachinches that you can find in Tenerife are located in the following municipalities: Tacoronte, El Sauzal, Tegueste, La Matanza de Acentejo, La Victoria de Acentejo, Santa Úrsula, La Orotava, Los Realejos, Icod de los Vinos. As you can see, these are not the usual tourist places, so here you'll find that most of the customers are residents, and it would be great if you could speak some Spanish, as most of the servers don't speak English.

Even so, eating at a Guachinche is one of the unique experiences in Tenerife and we always try to find new ones, especially around Tegueste, Los Realejos, or La Orotava, which are our favorite areas for this, as we really like the wine in those parts.

As you can see, there are plenty of places to visit during your trip to Tenerife , from traditional towns to natural parks. If you don’t have much time and can only visit part of the island, don’t worry. We have specific guides on things to do in Tenerife North and things to do in Tenerife South , so you can plan a wonderful getaway.

Don’t get overwhelmed; the island isn’t that big, so regardless of where you stay, you’ll be able to visit the main points of interest in the north and south. Your best bet is to rent a car so you can move freely around the island. However, if you’d rather not worry about driving during your Tenerife holiday, there are lots of great excursions around Tenerife that will allow you to discover the most popular attractions .

If you’re wondering about the best time to visit Tenerife , there really isn’t a bad time to go. The temperatures on the island are quite mild throughout the year, with an average temperature of 77 °F (25 °C) in the summer and 65 °F (18 °C) in the winter.

Keep in mind that there are about 25 microclimates on the island, meaning there may be small thermal variations from one area to another. For example, the south tends to get more sun, so the temperatures are a few degrees higher than in the north. As for the northern part of the island, it usually gets more rain, especially in winter. That said, there are only 2-3 rainy days per month on average, so you’ll still be able to enjoy your vacation to Tenerife .

Overall, you can enjoy a pleasant trip to Tenerife year-round.

Best month to travel to Tenerife

If you want a specific answer for when to travel to Tenerife , it’s difficult to pinpoint an exact time, as the temperatures and weather in Tenerife are mild year-round. Something to keep in mind is that, depending on what you want to do during your holiday in Tenerife , some months may be better than others.

For example, for lazy days on the beach, plan to travel to Tenerife in the summer months, specifically July, August, and September. The temperatures should be around 77 °F (25 °C), with very little rain and up to 12 hours of daylight. That said, during this time of year, there are often sudden changes in temperature from one area of the island to another, depending on altitude. So, if you want to climb Mount Teide , be sure to bring some warm layers to wear. Also, one of the drawbacks of traveling in Tenerife during the summer is that the prices for everything are higher since it’s peak tourist season.

Best month to visit Tenerife

On the other hand, if you want to go to Tenerife in the winter (January, February, and March) the temperatures will still be quite nice, with an average of 65 °F (18 °C). This time of year also brings more rainfall, although it’s usually no more than 2-3 rainy days per month. So, this could be the best time to travel to Tenerife if you want to go hiking and try other outdoor activities.

The spring (April, May, and June) and the autumn (October, November, and December) are the best for taking a cheap holiday to Tenerife . It’s the low season, so accommodation and food prices will be more affordable. Plus, there will be fewer crowds and the weather will still be pleasant, so you can visit the beach, go hiking, and enjoy other attractions .

Should you travel to Tenerife North or South?

One of the most common questions I see is whether to travel to Tenerife North or South . Both parts of the island offer beautiful sites and exciting attractions. Depending on your personal preferences, one area will appeal to you more than the other.

First, if you visit Tenerife North , you’ll be able to explore some of the most important metropolitan areas on the island, such as Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Puerto de la Cruz . The north is also home to several charming towns like La Orotava and Garachico , where you can try some authentic Canarian cuisine. There are also incredible natural areas here, like Anaga Rural Park , and beaches like Las Teresitas. So, if you’re interested in history, culture, and stunning hiking trails, you’ll love exploring all the tourist attractions in Tenerife North .

As for Tenerife South, it’s known for its white sand beaches, where you can practice watersports like kayaking and surfing, as well as dolphin and whale-watching. There are also some lovely historical towns here like Vilaflor de Chasna and El Médano , not to mention magnificent landscapes like the Masca Gorge , one of the best places to visit in Tenerife South . And if you’re looking to enjoy some shopping and nightlife while traveling in Tenerife , there are lots of restaurants, shops, and nightclubs in Tenerife located in this part of the island.

Remember, you can get from one end of the island to the other by renting a car, booking a tour, or taking the bus. So, just because you’re staying in one part of Tenerife, that doesn’t mean you can’t explore other interesting areas. I will say that the quickest and easiest way to get around is by renting a car in Tenerife .

How many days do you need to visit Tenerife?

Later, return to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, stopping at Las Teresitas Beach along the way. It’s one of the most beautiful beaches in Tenerife , and one of the few white and golden sand beaches in the north.

The next day, begin with a visit to Anaga Rural Park , one of the most magical places to visit in Tenerife . After that, make the 35-minute drive to Benijo Beach , one of the wildest, virgin beaches on the island. Be very careful if you go swimming, as there are strong currents and waves. At night, I recommend returning to your Santa Cruz de Tenerife hotel.

There are many interesting places in Puerto de la Cruz , although you can’t miss Plaza del Charco, Plaza Europa, the port, and the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia.

In La Orotava , you’ll find all kinds of restaurants and beautiful attractions like Casa de los Balcones, Plaza de la Constitución, and the Church of Our Lady of the Conception.

After visiting La Orotava, head to Icod de los Vinos, where I recommend spending the night. There are some small, intimate hotels here, like the Hotel Emblemático San Agustín or the Casa Rural Montiel .

If you’ve spent the night in Icod de los Vinos , you can start your day exploring its lovely town center. You can’t miss the Cueva del Viento, a volcanic cave that formed over 27,000 years ago after the Pico Viejo eruption. The Drago Milenario, an over 800-year-old dragon tree, is another must-see.

After visiting Mount Teide, you can travel to Puerto de la Cruz, where I recommend spending the night. The change prompted UK tour operators to resume holidays to the Canary Islands – the only part of Spain exempt from the Foreign Office’s non-essential travel warning . Hiking here is a Canary Islands highlight, especially around the Barranco de las Angustias, the Roque de los Muchachos and the 1,854m-high Pico Bejenado. There’s more walking among the Los Tilos laurel forests in north-east La Palma. Take a dip in the saltwater pools in nearby San Andrés, with its 16th-century church.

In the far south, Fuencaliente’s bare, volcano-studded landscape produces distinctive malvasia vines; visit wineries such as Bodegas Teneguía , and drive to the wonderfully scenic salt flats, beach and lighthouse on the island’s southernmost tip.

Where to stay Hotel San Telmo (doubles from €69) in Santa Cruz has eight boutique-inspired rooms strung around a flower-filled patio in a mango-yellow 17th-century house. Hacienda San Jorge (doubles from €64) looks out on to the black sand beach in Los Cancajos, and has a lagoon-style pool and subtropical gardens.

Eat and drink In Santa Cruz, book one of the handful of tables at Enriclai for home-style Canarian cooking (mains €10-€15), and stock up on island produce at the municipal market. El Paso’s Tapas & Trekking does excellent Canaries-inspired tapas – cheese boards , squid-ink caldoso rice, all with local wines (up to €10).

Walkers travel to lush La Gomera for its outstanding mountain trails, but there’s much more to this bohemian island, where cliff-edged coastlines give way to palm-filled valleys, ancient subtropical forests and eerie volcanic rock formations.

What to do Combine a stay in La Gomera’s pastel-hued seaside capital San Sebastián with delightful agricultural Hermigua in the less touristy north (near lovely volcanic Playa de la Caleta). San Sebastián’s historic centre features laurel-shaded plazas, ancient mansions and the 15th-century church where Columbus is said to have prayed before setting off for the Americas.

However, La Gomera’s hands-down highlight is the magical, misty Parque Nacional de Garajonay , whose elevated, Unesco-protected laurisilva forests conceal some of the Canaries’ most rewarding walking paths. A fabulous route through the 40 sq km park meanders down the Hermigua valley from the Alto de Garajonay (1,484m).

Elsewhere, drop into northern villages such as 17th-century Agulo or Vallehermoso and Alojera, both with black sand beaches. Peaceful El Cercado, just south-west of the national park, is home to La Gomera’s last remaining traditional ceramicists, whose workshops you can visit.

Where to stay Looking out on Hermigua’s banana-palm valley, Los Telares offers smartly rustic studio apartments (from €47) with balconies and a pool. The Parador de la Gomera (doubles from €97), designed to resemble a 15th-century mansion, sits above San Sebastián, surrounded by Canarian gardens and an Atlantic-facing pool.

Eat and drink In Las Hayas, on the western edge of Garajonay, Casa Efigenia is a classic for traditional, all-vegetarian La Gomera cuisine (menus €10). Hermigua’s El Faro does excellent seafood paella, goat’s cheese salads and fresh fish (mains €10-15), while San Sebastián’s market is great for local produce, including gomero cheese.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is not a tourist town — citizens live and work here, and it may be a bit harder to find English speakers here than in the island's southwest resorts. That said, a visit to Santa Cruz de Tenerife a great way to experience authentic island life. And there are some interesting things to do as well.

Head to the Canaries' biggest public square — Plaza de España — to people-watch, view the enormous artificial lake and see the sailboat design of the Auditorio de Tenerife. (By the way, this auditorium is a great place to view an opera, concert or other performance.) For a culture fix, travelers can also check out some of the museums, including the contemporary art housed in the Tenerife Espacio de las Artes. The gallery is located in downtown Santa Cruz on Avenue de San Sebastian.

Many visitors also liked the area's Playa de Las Teresitas , a beach located just a 6-mile bus ride north of central Santa Cruz. Travelers waxed poetic about the pristine golden sand and the cheap beach chairs available for rent.

The best times to visit Tenerife for carnival fever and coastal hiking

Once known for its wild all-night parties, Tenerife now enthralls with even wilder landscapes – and a million and one ways to embrace them.

Time your visit right and you can ride massive Atlantic rollers, watch whales, hike through prehistoric laurel forests ripe for a Tolkien fantasy, flop on volcanic beaches and pedal through crater-pocked lunar landscapes with Mt Teide peeking over your shoulder.  

Whether you’re coming to Tenerife for fiestas, outdoor adventures or lazy beach days, the island provides constant surprises. Winter is high season for those craving warmth and sunshine, but being so close to North African shores, the weather is pretty reliable year round. Summer turns up the heat, especially when the Saharan Calima winds blow, while spring and fall are perfect for hitting the trail and seeing a calmer, less-crowded side to this crazily popular Canary Island .

Plan a trip in high season to soak up winter sun (December to March; July to August)

Much of Europe might be bundled up in coats and shivering, but Tenerife is closer to the coast of Africa than Spain, and this difference is reflected in mild winter temperatures, which rarely dip below 15ºC (60°F) and sometimes hit a balmy 22ºC (71°F). January is the driest month, with barely any rain, plenty of sunshine and clear blue skies that are a tonic to vitamin D-deprived travelers. The Atlantic is a little chilly this time of year, but the brave still take the plunge. 

Bear in mind that south coast resorts are a touch warmer than those in the north, where the weather can be more fickle. You’ll want to pack layers if you’re heading into the mountains or up Pico del Teide , which is often snow-capped in winter. Heavy snow can mean the sudden closure of roads and trails.

Surfers come in winter to ride big rollers on the south coast. Whale watching on the Costa Adeje is terrific. Not only can you see the usual resident pilot whales and dolphins, but you’ll also spot migratory species like fin whales, blue whales and humpbacks. Birdwatchers are also in their element in winter.

Winter is a popular season to visit, particularly in February, when the capital,  Santa Cruz de Tenerife , goes wild for Carnaval, with Latino beats, parades, sexy dance moves and skimpy, sparkly costumes. The carnival here is second only to Rio, so expect to see crowds in bigger resorts. You’ll pay top rates for rooms during the Christmas holidays and carnival time.

Crowds also surge in summer, especially during school vacations, and flight prices and room rates soar. The island sizzles in temperatures up to 31ºC (88°F), though Atlantic breezes make the heat tolerable. This is the time for flopping on the beach, swimming, kitesurfing and windsurfing at El Médano . The island flicks into fiesta and music-festival mode, and south-coast resorts ramp up their party scene.

For festivals, visit during shoulder season (April to June)

Spring is when Tenerife takes a breather. Except during Easter, you can find bargain flights and hotels, and things are generally quieter. It’s a glorious time to see the peaks, valleys and gorges lushly green and freckled with wildflowers in mountainous areas like Anaga, Parque Nacional del Teide and Parque Rural de Teno in the island’s rugged north.

Days are warming up, with highs of up to 23ºC (73°F), taking the chill off the sea. You can expect occasional showers, but these tend to blow over quickly. Shoulder season is a great time to cycle, scuba dive, paraglide above volcanic landscapes and strike out on mountain-to-coast trails like the Barranco de Masca .

Low season is the best time for quiet exploration (September to November)

At times, you’ll feel as though you have Tenerife all to yourself in fall. The crowds of summer have fizzled out, and room rates are dropping. Flights might be less frequent, but if you’re flexible, you can snap up some good deals. September is still pretty hot, with highs around 27ºC (80°F), and the Atlantic has had all summer to warm up.

It’s a fine month for exploring, so combine the coast with hikes in the mountains, wine tasting at inland bodegas and culture in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the historic center of Unesco World Heritage La Laguna .

Bring waterproof clothing or an umbrella in October, Tenerife’s rainiest month by far. (Given how wonderfully quiet the island is at this time, you can forgive it the odd downpour.) The surfing season lasts from September to April.

January is for whale watching and big waves

Blue skies delight winter sun-seekers. January is the driest month, and the beaches buzz with travelers topping up their tans (not locals: they're the ones wearing padded coats!). Come for whale watching and big waves. Christmas festivities spill over into the new year at Día de los Reyes Magos (Three Kings Day) on January 6, with parades and presents in resorts like Santa Cruz, Garachico and Los Cristianos. The architecturally striking Auditorio de Tenerife reverberates to classical music. Key events: Día de los Reyes Magos, Canary Islands Music Festival

February's scene is all about Carnaval

Ay ay ay! The whole island goes mad for Carnaval in February, with glittering parades, parties and samba beats that bring Rio to the capital Santa Cruz. Book far in advance to reserve a room. Puffed white with almond blossom, the island looks gorgeous. Hike the Almond Blossom Route that starts in Santiago del Teide to see it at its blooming best. Key events: Carnaval

March has great weather sans crowds

Tenerife is coming into flower and warming up in March, making this a great time for uncrowded beach days or backcountry hikes and bike rides. Folk concerts bring Canarian culture to life in south coast Arona.  Key events: Festival of Early and Baroque Music

In April, prices spike around Easter

Semana Santa (Holy Week) brings emotive religious processions to traditional towns and villages like La Laguna, Güímar and La Orotava. April is overall a quiet month, but room rates and visitor numbers spike around Easter. You’ll get the odd showery or cloudy day, but also plenty of sun. Key events: Semana Santa  

May is lovely and often overlooked

One of the loveliest, most-overlooked months on Tenerife, May is mostly sunny and dry, ideal for planning outdoor escapades or just crashing on the nearest beach. Cafe and restaurant terraces hum as the evenings get warmer. Santa Cruz de Tenerife throws a huge May festival, with balls, pageants and food and craft fairs. The highlight is Día de la Cruz (Holy Cross Day) on May 3, with parades and costumed parties. Key events: Fiestas de Mayo, MUECA

Summer swings into gear in June

Spring eases into summer in June, with higher temperatures, lots of sunshine and refreshingly few crowds. Puerto de la Cruz celebrates San Juan (St John) on June 23, with all-night beach parties, barbecues, bonfires, fireworks and music. The town of La Orotava is carpeted in elaborate tapestries of flowers and sand for Corpus Christi. Key events: Fiestas de San Juan, Corpus Christi

Fiesta season touches down in July

It’s peak summer, and hot days mean you’ll want to be close to the coast or in the cool of the mountains in July. Visitor numbers (and room rates) surge when school is out. This is fiesta season, with festivals swinging from music to dance and film to folk. Puerto de la Cruz celebrates the Virgen del Carmen, the patron saint of fishermen and sailors, with maritime processions on July 16. Temperatures hit their peak in August

The island buzzes with people and parties in August, when temperatures peak, regularly hitting 30ºC (86°F). It’s time to head for the playa (beach), but don’t expect much towel space. Flights are pricey, and rooms are at a premium.

The events calendar is jam-packed. Pro windsurfers catch breezes at the PWA World Cup in El Médano. Take a deep dive into the island’s culture at festivals like the Fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaria, which honors the island’s patron saint with mid-month pilgrimages and parades. September is peaceful, with stable weather

Summer lingers, and the Atlantic is nice and warm for swimming in September. It’s a peaceful month and one of the best for hiking and cycling, with the weather still stable. September is harvest time, and many farmers are busy picking almonds, figs and grapes. La Laguna is festival central, with its Fiesta del Santísimo Cristo staging parades, parties, Canarian wrestling and big-bang fireworks, and folk music concerts at the Sabandeño Festival. Pack an umbrella in rainy October

October is the wettest month in Tenerife, but don’t let that put you off: temperatures can still creep up to a very pleasant 26ºC (79°F), though nights are cooler. It’s a quiet month for rambles into the mountains or along the coast. In the island's west, the village of Aripe holds a fair to celebrate the almond harvest. Key events: Tenerife Opera Festival

November is the calm before the holiday storm

November is true low season, and tourism slows to a trickle, a breath of calm before the Christmas festivities. The north can be cloudy, but days are still warm, making this a great month for a winter-sun fix before the big crowds rock up. It’s a month of feasting: cheese, chestnuts and, at the end-of-month Fiesta de San Andrés (Festival of St Andrew), new wine in Puerto de la Cruz and La Orotava. Icod de los Vinos holds the wacky Tablas, where locals race down the town’s steep streets on greased wooden boards.   Key events: Fiesta de San Andrés

December brings festive cheer

December is full of festive sparkle, fiestas and fireworks. The price of flights, hotels and crowds shoots up as travelers flock here for Navidad (Christmas) and Nochevieja (New Year’s Eve). Key events: Puertos de Tenerife Christmas concert
