“Charmed:” The Painted Victorian Known as Halliwell Manor

Charmed Halliwell Manor on WB TV series

This painted Victorian is instantly recognizable as Halliwell Manor from the popular TV series “Charmed .”Ā  The show was set in San Francisco, but in real life it’s the historic Innes House in Los Angeles.

The show was about three sisters who discover that they’re descendants of a long line of witches. Each of them has a special ability, like moving objects, stopping time, or seeing the future, and their destiny is to battle against the forces of evil.

They learn that they are “the Charmed ones” with combined forces creating an unstoppable “Power of Three.” Demons are an occupational hazard for them, breaking into their pretty Victorian to bust it up on the regular.

Let’s take a look back at the family home that Paige, Phoebe, Prue, and Paige inherited from their Gram…

Update: Check outĀ  the house from the new “Charmed” reboot , which is pretty fabulous, too.

A reader named Kellie is a “Charmed” superfan who urged me to write about the show and sent me some photos and information to get me started since I didn’t know much about it.

She explained the concept, writing: “The Halliwell family moved into the house in the early 1900s to protect the Nexus and use it for good. Each generation of Halliwells has lived in this house since that time.

“Many of the battles that the sisters have fought have taken place in the manor. The manor is the safest place for them to be, even though a lot of bad stuff still happens there.”

Piper and Paige in the attic on Charmed

“The Book of Shadows is kept in the attic, which, until the sisters received their powers, was always locked. You’ll notice that much of the show takes place in the attic and in other rooms downstairs in the house.”

The “Charmed” Kitchen

Paige Piper Phoebe in the Kitchen

At the beginning of the series, Shannen Doherty played Prue, the oldest Halliwell sister, but she was killed off in the third season finale.

Rumor has it that she left because she didn’t get along with Alyssa Milano, who played her younger sister Phoebe.

The drama came up again last year in an interview with Milano , who hinted that they didn’t always get along.

In any case, when the series returned for a 4th season, Prue was dead, and they discovered they had a new (half) sister they’d never heard of before — Rose McGowan’s Paige.

I hope all of the people who were asking about this house appreciate your hard work. Wow, that was some undertaking! I’ve never seen the show and it doesn’t sound like something I’d be interested in, but the (real) house is beautiful. Very interesting set design. I’d like to know why they chose to decorate it like that. It looks like it was done in the 80s and never updated. Maybe they got to see the interior of the real house when they started and copied that. If not I can’t imagine why they did it that way. It’s a mystery. Get to the bottom of that now, would you? šŸ˜‰

the charmed house tour

2.24.14 at 9:36 am

Yes, I hope they do! Ha. This one took me forEVer to write. šŸ™‚

The show started in the 1990s, so I think the decorating looked a little less old-fashioned at the time than it does to us now. And it was supposed to have been in the family for generations, as Alie mentions below. But you wouldn’t know three women in their 20s lived there at first glance, for sure!

the charmed house tour

2.24.14 at 10:28 am

It was their Grams house and the girls inherited it so I think it was just familiar to them. And you know, Demons were always pooping in and blowing things up, so…. šŸ˜‰

2.24.14 at 10:29 am

“popping in” – Demons were always “popping in” not pooping. Sheesh.

2.24.14 at 10:30 am

Ha. Yes, thankfully they were just popping in the house. And good point about things getting blown up a lot! šŸ™‚

Hi, I love Hooked on Houses! Towards the end of the series of Charmed, Phoebe had an apartment that was wonderful. Is there any chance of pictures ?

the charmed house tour

2.24.14 at 9:19 am

I love the real home exterior of this place! They did a great job on the interior sets as well. You’re right, Julia, the dĆ©cor does seem an odd choice for young women, but since the home is supposed to have been in their family for generations, I can see tradition winning out over trend. It gives an impression of establishment and comfort; sort of like a trip to Grandma’s. Reminds me a lot of Sookie Stackhouse’s gran’s house in True Blood.

2.24.14 at 9:34 am

That’s another good one! Thanks, Alie.

Thanks for this. I LOVED charmed. I didnt watchas much after prud died, and addding the Billie character was crazy. Did you binge watch(as 8yr is alot to go thru) a season or just watch as you could. Lastly,in the 6th picture after pic of Paige’s wedding of the street,is the brown house to right of the innes house burned? It looks so dull.

2.24.14 at 9:53 am

I watched episodes as I could on my computer and took screenshots as I went along over the last few years. (I forgot to mention that Netflix is still streaming the series if anyone wants to check it out.) Fun show!

I don’t know what the deal is with that house next door but it looks like it’s in bad shape, doesn’t it?

the charmed house tour

4.9.14 at 7:57 pm

that dull brown house was where dan lived in the charmed series, and it looks like the house that paige got spooked by. it ended up being a place with a man made boy and a monster who shrinks girls and turns them into one of a kind ciramic or clay sculptures. i hope that answers your question, if you have anymore charmed questions, i would love to answer them, i am a HUGE fan, i wish i was on that tour… thnx bye!!!

The Innes House at least used to be owned by the LA Conservancy & the ground floor was available for tours. I don’t know if that’s still the case. Someone on Flickr posted a few photos of the interior though, starting with this one:

& continuing for a few past that.

2.24.14 at 10:22 am

No problem! Thank YOU for all the hard work in this post!

2.24.14 at 11:39 am

Thanks, Ash! I really enjoyed looking at the real Innes House interior! šŸ™‚ It looks to me like they used the real home as an inspiration for the show sets. The woodworking looks pretty similar, but the designers did their own thing with the dĆ©cor.

2.24.14 at 2:51 pm

I remember hearing that the pilot episode was filmed in the actual house and that they created the sets, after the show got picked up, to be as true to the house’s interiors as possible (particularly the staircase which was featured several times in the very first episode).

ps. GREAT post Julia!!!

I’ve always loved Charmed. You can catch it in reruns in the mornings on TNT and in the afternoons on Lifetime (in NJ it’s on 7-9am on TNT and 3-5pm on Lifetime.) It was such a lovely surprise to see this post today.

The girls lived with their Grams (Grandmother) and then she passed away before their powers were returned to them. Grams bound their powers as young children to allow them normal childhoods. I like to think they kept the house as if she still were alive to keep her close to them. (and she did appear in many episodes as a ghost or spirit). It was their ancestral home – maybe they didn’t feel modernizing it was their right?

Thanks Julia! JoAnn in NJ

Hi Julia thank you for doing this post I have been waiting I loved charmed and always thought the house was beautiful and charming I love how they give the it a history and kinda made seem magical

2.24.14 at 5:05 pm

Thanks for this feature! I loved the Charmed house. Yes, it was old-fashioned for such young women. However, the characters were written as girls who honored their ancestry, so it fit that they didn’t change it.

2.24.14 at 5:20 pm

charmed, in re-runs, used to one of my guilty pleasures, the house was one of the reasons i watched it! it was old fashioned, but very in keeping with the tone of the show. somewhat reminded me of the practical magic house. the attic was my favorite.

i love the house in the witches of east end, especially the kitchen. hope you’ll do a feature on it sometime.

thanks for all of the work on this post!

2.24.14 at 5:22 pm

If I get enough requests for “Witches of East End” I’ll definitely start working on a post about it. I love that one — the kitchen is my favorite room in their house, too. Thanks, Nanne!

I never watched this show, but guess they avoided showing the right side, which doesn’t seem to actually have a solarium protruding there. I love solariums like that, though.

The only house on a witch show I’ve taken much interest in lately is the one on American Horror Story: Coven, which was a gorgeous New Orleans mansion. You’d love the house, Julia, but the show might be a bit beyond your grossness threshold.

2.25.14 at 7:13 am

Yeah, I watched the first season of AHS and it kinda freaked me out. I’m a total wuss about stuff like that! But I keep hearing about the Coven house, so I might have to watch enough to at least check that out. Ha. Thanks, Wade.

2.25.14 at 11:43 am

Well done and many great pictures for us. I love the sets. I didn’t watch the show either but the house is great – although a bit old fashion I agree. I’m fortunate to bump into set designers and staff looking for props and furniture when I’m out looking around too. Once in a while a photographer or stager will pop in looking for a vintage item for a special occasion or photo shoot. I’ve watched every episode of Witches of East End and both houses are amazing. The estate and the home the girls live in with their Mom and Aunt. Your hard work finding all these great pictures and information for us is greatly appreciated. Thanks šŸ™‚

I’ve been at fan of Charmed from the start and have always loved this house. I agree, witches live in the best houses! I think it’s why I love shows and movies about them. The Practical Magic house is my favorite and I also love the house from the series Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Oh and yes, I’m drooling over the Witches of East End house. Gotta love those witchy victorians! Thanks so much for featuring the Halliwell Mansion.

One of the many shows I watched only for the set. I loved the old fashion decoration of the manor. The kitchen is still one of my inspiration and my readers did laugh when I told them the sisters have two range stoves, one of which, the one on the table/island seems to be in no way connected to gas! https://thelittlewhitehouseontheseaside.blogspot.fr/2013/09/charmed.html

Wonderful post — I too was a fan of the show. In the early seasons of the show they often had C-stories related to the problems of upkeep in a historic home on their limited budget–the electric, the fireplaces. I appreciated that as 2 of the 3 were frequently unemployed. And then of course there’s all the home repairs from demon attacks on the show. Luckily one of the sisters ended up marrying a carpenter/repairman. šŸ˜‰

3.3.14 at 8:22 pm

Wasn’t that smart of her to marry someone who could take care of the house? If you’re going to live in an old Victorian, a handy husband would definitely be helpful to have around! šŸ™‚

3.4.14 at 9:16 pm

i stayed with the show for it’s entire run, so i’m gonna bore you stiff: the sisters p are a predestined trio known as ‘the charmed ones’ who were born to wipe out the source of all evil and restore a certain balance to the world. being descended of a centuries-long line of witches, the difference between the sisters and their ancestors is that rather than having the three powers – telekinesis, psychic vision and the ability stop time (freeze atoms on a localized scale) – each sister would have only one power and be exponentially stronger than they forebears in their designated gift. thus, prudence was telekinetic, piper could freeze motion and phoebe could see flashes of the future. in time each sister’s power would expand and develop secondary characteristics (i.e. piper could also speed up atoms, phoebe could levitate).

their home is decorated in an old fashioned manner because it has been in the family so long. this seems to be a standard trick for establishing a legacy of witchcraft around characters. when the show starts phoebe comes home from nyc broke to the aggravation of prue, who is a successful antiques appraiser. piper is trying to establish herself as a professional chef. their sibling dynamic is stereotypical: prue is a take charge/no nonsense firstborn, piper is a shy, mediating middle and phoebe is an impulsive wild child/baby. (this dynamic shifts very masterfully when prue dies and along comes paige, who was raised as an only child. firstborns and only children have pretty much the same personality. paige is not used to group decision making and defies piper’s advice repeatedly. bad things result. piper is frequently upset with her, while phoebe works very hard to keep the peace between them.)

the carpenter who eventually marries piper is actually their guardian angel, leo, who died in ww2. i have never understood how a man who’s mortal life was over could marry and father children. even with a witch. long-lost sister paige was also sired by their mother’s guardian angel, giving her the power to move objects through a sort of translocation the way leo can move from place to place. this allows her to fill prue’s role as the “telekinetic” of the trio. eventually, paige grows to be able to travel this way.

along with the destiny to take down the source of all evil (an actual person first portrayed as an underworld figure cloaked in a scarlet robe with scarlet wings, and then later as a monstrous freak of a demon), the girls must protect their family book of spells – which all demons want. almost any spell, potion or charm they need has been created and written down by their forebears. the girls do learn to write their own spells too.

and then there’s a whole thing about how a time travel incident shunted their destinies so that piper’s first born is a near omnipotent creature of terrifying power.

Hi Julia! I’m also hooked on houses and I’ve been a fan of your blog for years, but I’ve never thought about commenting until now – when I saw my floorplan for the Charmed house in your post!

I fell in love with the show and the house back when I was a teenager. I ran a fan site for it that is now lost to the ether (probably for the best), but it’s fun to see the floorplan I drew up still floating around the internet today.

Another commenter here got it right when they said that the pilot was filmed in the real house, which doesn’t match the set they later built. Even though they never filmed inside the real house again, a part of it can actually be seen in almost every episode! The opening credits feature a clip of a mysterious blue light shooting out of a chandelier, but it’s footage from the original unaired pilot – you can tell because there’s a beautiful corner fireplace visible that doesn’t exist in any of the rooms on the set. I’m not sure how many people watching ever notice that.

Again, love your blog, and this is a great post as usual. I look forward to many more to come!

3.5.14 at 9:04 am

Hi Ted! You’re the one who created the floorplan? I’m so glad to know who to thank for that. I was so excited to find it when I was researching the post. It’s helpful to see how all the rooms go together. Thanks for the additional info, too. Great to hear from you!!

Loved this show! It’s such a gorgeous house, and maybe it isn’t the most beautiful interior I’ve ever seen, but there’s just something about it that makes it feel so “homey”. Am I the only one, though, that’s always wondered why they have a proper cooker AND a set of, what d’you call it in America, an extra stovetop on the kitchen isle? Why?? On another note, the interior, and the house itself, from the Scottish tv series Monarch of the Glen is aboslutely amazing. A bit run down and not the flashiest of homes, but it’s so cozy and also very “homey” – so you should give it a look.

I’ve been watching “Monarch of the Glen” on Netflix. That’s another good one! Thanks, Stella.

The photo of the stairs isn’t from Halliwell Manor. It looks similar, but the wallpaper is different, the doorway to the left of the staircase (coming down the stairs) doesn’t have an actual door in the show – in this picture you can see a bit of a dark wood door – and there isn’t a space beneath the stairs in the show. It’s a flat wall.

Oh, interesting. Maybe that’s why I couldn’t track the photo down! Thanks, Meg.

I’ve seen this show 3 or 4 times, it’s one of my favorites tv shows ever made, and last time i even thought about taking screenshots. I have hundreds of them, especially of the sets and decor. I can’t quite get a good ideea of the upstairs plans though. The house is supposed to be an old victorian house inherited from their grandmother, that’s why it is decorated that way. The show started in 1998 and there is an unaired pilot episode that was actually filmed in the real Innes house, so they kind of got the decorating ideas from there. I have sceenshots from that too. It is kind of old looking, but i do like some parts: the conservatory and the kitchen are my favorites. One day, when i’ll have my own house that i hope i will get to build from scratch, i will definitely have a sunroom :D. I got inspired by this show ever since i first saw it.

You sould also feature the Sabrina, the teenage witch houses. Also victorian and interesting to see. I could help with screenshots, maybe by the end of this year.

And I Dream of Jeannie…I love the 60s tv shows. šŸ™‚

Thank you so much for all the photos and all the work you put into compiling the collection! I plan to use them for visual reference when I built a Charmed house in miniature (a dollhouse, if you will)! I started watching Charmed (reruns) in 2008. Then a couple years ago I checked out Big Bang Theory mainly because Kaley Cuoco had been on Charmed. I then got hooked on BBT too! But regarding the Charmed house (tv version), my favorite part of the house is the solarium, followed by the attic – where most of the ‘magick’ happens! šŸ™‚

Wow, this was an amazing article! Allmost all of my questions regarding the whole house and set was answered here. But, one thing I have noticed is that, when they were at the attic and someone rang on the the door, they always went to the window and looked to the left. But, according to the exterior your not able to see the door from the 3 floor. Aaaand I really wonder what to actual house look like inside šŸ˜® Love the house! And I recently saw it in the background in another movie (with the Ugly Betty girl), and after seeing it I could reqognize anything else. Haha

Anyway.. Great job!!

Halliwell Manor: Where is the Charmed House Located? Where was Charmed Filmed?

  • California California lifestyle California Things to Do Los Angeles travel influencer USA Travel

If you're a Charmed fan you've seen a lot of Halliwell Manor over the seasons. In the TV show, the Victorian-style manor is based in San Francisco, but that's not where the series was filmed.

Where did the Halliwell sisters live on the tv series “Charmed”?

The witches lived in San Francisco. The Halliwell family went through a lot of tribulations & jubilations in that house in San Francisco. And plenty of magic! It was passed down over the generations. The Book of Shadows played an important part up in their attic of those witch sisters, Piper, Prue Phoebe and Paige.

The Warren line of witches is powerful. For the most part, we saw the women inside their home with shots of the outside of the Halliwell house more seen during transitions for scenes. The manor stayed in the Warren family line for four generations. Where was this filmed? If you were ever wondering about the Halliwell manor Charmed houses, this post has the information you're looking for.

Where Is Halliwell Manor in real life? The house used for Charmed is a real house that real people live at. There are no tours. It is a neighborhood with people please be respectful. The address is 1329 Carroll Ave Los Angeles, CA 90026. The whole street is historic!

If you're in the LA area you need to check out the Halliwell manor near the Echo Park neighborhood. Where is Charmed filmed? You can actually find the Charmed house location in Los Angeles. Can you believe it? I suppose it's not the biggest surprise considering Hollywood & Los Angeles is well-known for being a big part of the movie industry. That said, the tv show takes place in San Francisco so it is a bit of a shock to find out that's not where it was shot. 500 Hidden Secrets in LA.

“Our powers are not toys.” - Prue Halliwell: Season 1, Episode 2

You can find the original structure of the house on 1329 Carroll Ave Los Angeles, CA 90026, along with a bunch of other beautiful houses on the same street, such as the Heim House which is at 1320 Carroll Avenue. The Victorian mansions are worth a visit since you're already in the area. They filmed loads of outside shots of Halliwell house for the show, so it's easily recognizable. Walk around the neighborhood to get the full scope of the Victorian-style manor, architecture, windows, even the door!

If you want to shop online so you can have episodes conveniently located at your home, opt for Charmed: the Complete Series  or start with Charmed Season 1 . Do you have a favorite season?

Whether you're a new Charmed fan or you've seen every episode 100 times & can quote every line, no matter what - you are welcome here on my blog!

Los Angeles has literally thousands of things you can potentially do, so this is just something to do if you have extra time or are a Charmed fan. Surprisingly, it's not very well known that the Charmed manor is actually in LA. I found it on accident as I was looking at the map, it just showed up. Carroll Avenue is located in Los Angeles near Echo Park. The neighborhood is beautiful.

Is the Halliwell Manor a Real House?

Oh yes! It's definitely a real house & a stunning one at that, well from what I've seen at least since you can't tour it. However, the exterior of the house is different than the set they used for the inside of the house. The furniture on TV is not the same as the actual interior of the house. When I visited they were doing construction on the exterior of the house. It looked like they were just doing standard maintenance to make it look refreshed. It's an old Victorian house after all. Explore the area, there are other gorgeous houses to see.

People live in the home so it's not available for tours or anything tour options I know of. Where did the Halliwell sisters live on the tv series “Charmed”? In the tv show, the home is supposed to be on 1329 Prescott Street, San Francisco. But there's no location to tour in San Francisco!

“We kick evil’s ass every day.” “Sometimes twice a day.” - Paige Matthews and Piper Halliwell: Season, 4, Episode 15

Is the Charmed House Los Angeles Historic?

In 1976, the entire 1300 block of Carroll Avenue was listed as a National Register of Historic Places. (Learn more about the  National Register of Historic Places .) The Carroll Avenue 1300 block contains the highest concentration of Victorian Era residences still standing in Los Angeles. The interesting homes are considered part of the Eastlake & Queen Anne style. Built by real estate developer and city councilman, Daniel Innes, the Charmed house location in real life is called the Innes House. It's one of the original homes build during the 1880s on Carroll Avenue in Angelino Heights.

These nine Victorian residences are considered Los Angeles-Historic-Cultural Monuments as they represent times long gone, a dedication to architecture, beauty, design. This house had some external work done such as a paint job & fixing the roof, but much of it remains intact. For the most part, it's still the original structure.

Can You Visit the Halliwell Manor?

Here's the thing: the Halliwell house is a real house & real people live there. It's a private residence and historical landmark. It's a historic home, the Innes House. The whole street is a historic site. It's not a fake house on a fake street with fake people. It's a neighborhood with humans who genuinely live there. Be considerate & respectful when you visit. Don't walk directly onto their property, keep your distance & get a shot from the sidewalk. The home is tall so you don't want to cut it out by getting too close anyway! You can't go inside but you can take photos from the outside. The real name of the house is the Innes House.

Where was Charmed Filmed?

Perhaps you're searching for the Charmed house San Francisco. For the most part, the filming location for Charmed was at Paramount Studios at 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA. Exterior shots of  Halliwell manor  were shot at 1329 Carroll Avenue in Los Angeles, California. Despite the tv show being based in San Francisco, they didn't film there! There is no  Charmed house San Francisco.

Don't Forget to Check Out the Thriller House

While you're in the area, check out the Thriller House on the same block. The address is 1345 Carroll Avenue in Angelino Heights. The home is called the Sanders House & is well-known as the place featured in Michael Jackson's Thriller music video. Check out the Thriller CD  on Amazon. You'll love walking around the neighborhood known for its architecture and history.

Thanks Jennifer!

I loved Charm! This is so cool and love that you were able to capture/ visit it :) https://www.mariannyc.com/book-review-indestructible-by-krista-nerestant/

It was a random find one day but so cool!! :]

Omg so cool! I grew up watching Charmed and have only spoiled my adult like with continued reruns thanks to Netflix lol. This would be something I'd love to check out if I ever go to LA lol. Thanks for sharing doll! Des | https://www.itsbetterinheels.com

It's so nice to watch on Netflix, brings up memories of the 1990s! :]

The action figure link of Piper is broken ;-(

Before Covid you used to be able to go in. The owners opened it one weekend a month for tours. They lived upstairs and downstairs it was just like 1900, except the kitchen. I think it was $10 for the neighborhood tour paid to the City. That was the only house we went it. The day of the tour it was all young girls and me. It was funny I stood out. I plan to go back next month when I visit the Fast Furious house closeby. I didn't know they were neighbors or I would have seen it the first time.

I just checked. They have the tours again, but the price went up to $15. https://www.laconservancy.org/events/angelino-heights-walking-tour The website says no guarantee which house you will go into, but the day I went it was the Innes house as it was always the Innes house back then.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! // :]

Book of Shadows

NexusPentagram

The pentagram around the manor.

Since the Halliwell Manor is exactly situated at the center of five essential life elements (fire, water, earth, wood, and metal), it is located on top of a Spiritual Nexus . These five essential life elements are the San Francisco Bay (Water), the Potrero Natural Hot Springs (Fire), Kenwood Park (Wood), The Twin Peaks (Earth) and Mountain Lake Park (Metal). When connected, these five points form a pentagram with the manor in the center, making it not only a spiritual nexus but a Wiccan one as well.

The Nexus is a neutral source of power that could be accessed by good and evil. The Charmed Ones ' great great-grandparents bought the land and built the manor in 1906 to prevent it from falling into the hands of evil. As forces of good were in control of the manor, the Nexus was described as providing an extra boost of power to the sisters. For this reason, good would prevail as long as the sisters were in control of the manor. However, should the manor be overtaken by evil, it would gain control over the Nexus and evil would spread. As the Nexus is a neutral force, those born on top the Nexus are more easily swayed by the forces of evil, but can also be swayed by the forces of good.

Evil Forces

There have been several times that demons and other evil beings have attempted to control the power of the Nexus . The Woogyman was a demon that was imprisoned within the Nexus by Penny Halliwell with a spell. She taught this spell to Phoebe as a nursery rhyme in case the Woogyman was ever freed. [3] After his return from the Demonic Wasteland , Cole Turner sought to obtain the Nexus in an attempt to get Phoebe back. [4] The demon Zankou  also made several attempts to gain control of the Nexus.

Banishing the Nexus

Suxen7

The Nexus and Zankou being destroyed.

When Zankou stole the Book of Shadows and took over the manor, the Charmed Ones had no choice but to destroy the Nexus to prevent evil from accessing its power. In order to vanquish Zankou and destroy the Nexus, the sisters allowed Zankou to take it in and proceeded to banish it with a spell the Elders had placed in the Book of Shadows long ago. The result was a huge explosion that the destroyed Zankou and the basement, allowing the sisters to fake their own deaths in the process. [5]

Rooms and Surroundings

The manor has four bedrooms on the second floor, which consists of one master bedroom and three smaller bedrooms. All four rooms are shown, and confirmed, in Season 8, however, there may be more than just four. [6]

Master Bedroom

6x03BedroomPiper

Piper in her bedroom.

The master bedroom was initially used by Penny Halliwell . When she moved out, it was used by Patty and Victor , until their divorce and Patty's death, at which point Penny moved back in to take care of her granddaughters. After Penny's death, Prue moved into the master bedroom until she moved out to give the newlywed Piper and Leo more space. [7] The closet in the master bedroom was converted into a nursery months before Wyatt was born. Said nursery is later converted back into a closet. The master also has its own bathroom. [8]

Second Bedroom

Charmed-Halliwell-Manor-Prues-bedroom-2

Piper in Prue's bedroom before Paige moved in.

This bedroom was initially used by Piper until she switched rooms with Prue after marrying Leo . Prue then used this room until her tragic and untimely death. The room was left vacant until Paige moved into the house. After Paige and Phoebe, moved out, this room became Wyatt's official room, moving him out of Piper and Leo's closet nursery. After Chris was born, he and Wyatt shared this room together. This room was also once used by Grams as a sewing room. [9]

Third Bedroom

SistersPhoebebed

Phoebe's bedroom.

The third and most likely the smallest bedroom was primarily used by Phoebe until she eventually moved into her own condo. It was also temporarily used by Billie Jenkins and presumably Christy when they stayed at the manor. After Phoebe and Paige moved out permanently, this room was most likely converted to a room for one of Piper's children. This room was temporarily turned into a home gym, when Phoebe relocated to Hong Kong. It was once described by Prue to be the coldest room in the house.

Fourth Bedroom

In season 8 , Paige is seen in her own separate bedroom, along with Leo and Piper, Phoebe, and Chris and Wyatt's shared room. Therefore, this confirms that the manor has (at least) a fourth bedroom.

1x01-PhoebeDiscovers

Phoebe enters the attic for the first time.

The attic of the manor is located on the third floor and can be accessed through a stairway. It is a large space that takes up nearly the entire third floor. Aside from being a basic attic used for storage, the attic was the place where the Book of Shadows was kept by The Charmed Ones and Penny Halliwell before them. As the sisters grew up in the manor unaware of their heritage, the attic was kept locked by Penny at all times while she told her granddaughters that it was sealed off completely. [10]  The door was unlocked the night Phoebe went there after the spirit board had given her the word "Attic" as a message. [11]

During their time as The Charmed Ones , the attic was a very important location for the sisters, as the Book of Shadows was kept there nearly all the time. As such, the sisters spent a lot of time in the attic when they needed to use magic, research demons or other evil beings or summon spirits . Additionally, several important events took place in the attic, including several important vanquishes and revelations.

1x19-PruePotion

Prue making a potion in the kitchen.

The kitchen of the manor was a large and bright-colored room with an entrance to the dining room, the basement, and the laundry room. Like any household, the sisters spent a lot of time in the kitchen for regular daily activities and conversations. Additionally, the sisters kept several potion ingredients in the kitchen and brewed potions when the potion required to be prepared on the stove.

As a chef and most skilled potion maker, Piper spent the most time in the kitchen. Several important events also took place in the kitchen, including Prue taking a potion that killed her in order to vanquish the spirit of Jackson Ward , though Andy managed to revive her with CPR. [12]

WoogymanBanish

The Woogyman being banished.

The basement is a large room located underneath the manor, which is accessible through the kitchen. The basement played an important part in the lives of the sisters, as it is the place where the Nexus could be accessed and where the Woogyman was imprisoned. For this reason, Phoebe was afraid of the basement for most of her youth. [13]

The basement was also used by Prue as a darkroom during her career as a photographer. Additionally, it was the location where Cole trained Phoebe in combat. Prue and Phoebe both hid out in the basement when they gained the power of Empathy . [14] The basement was also where various important events took place, such as The Charmed Ones vanquishing Zankou and faking their own deaths. [15]

Dining Room

The Day the Magic Died - born wyatt

Piper gives birth to Wyatt.

The dining room is a room that connects to the kitchen, the conservatory, and the sitting room. The room is used for fancy or special meals, such as birthdays, or when the sisters received guests. [16] Family meetings were also occasionally held in the dining room. Several important events took place in the dining room, most notably the birth of Wyatt Halliwell on the dining table. [17]

Sitting Room

8x16SittingRoom

The sitting room as seen from the stairs.

The sitting room is the central room of the manor, which leads to the front door through the foyer and also connects to the living room, conservatory, and the dining room. The stairway is also located in the sitting room. The sitting room was primarily used for regular, everyday activities, though it was also used for several important events. The sisters often studied the Book of Shadows here whenever it was not in the attic. When the Charmed Ones was first constituted and later reconstituted (twice), the chandelier in the sitting room emitted a magical glow [18] [19] [20] . It is also the location where the Wedding of Piper Halliwell and Leo Wyatt was held [21] , and where the Ultimate Battle was fought. [22]

Conservatory

5x22-SunSisters

Piper and Phoebe in the conservatory.

The conservatory, also called the sunroom or solarium , is a spacious room in the manor that is brightly lit by the many windows and open doors to the garden. It also connects to the sitting room, the living room and the dining room. The conservatory is generally used as a place of family moments and relaxation in the morning and afternoon, especially during warm seasons. The sisters often came here to relax and talk with each other. It was also used as a playroom for Wyatt .

Additionally, the room severed as an important location for various events. It is the location where the Wedding of Paige Matthews and Henry Mitchell took place. [23] It is also where Piper vanquished the Titans as the Goddess of Earth . [24] Lastly, the conservatory is also the place where Prue Halliwell died after she was blasted through a wall by Shax . [25]

Living Room

PheebsTryingtoHearTVLivingRoom

Phoebe trying to hear the TV.

The living room of manor is a regular-sized room located at the front of the manor. It can be accessed through the foyer, the sitting room, and the conservatory. The living room has a fireplace and is generally used as a regular living room.

Hall3

A view of the foyer.

The foyer is the main hall of the manor and leads straight into the sitting room, though it can also be used to access the living room directly right upon entry through the front door. The foyer is most notable for being the location where the " door tradition " started.

The manor initially had two bathrooms, one upstairs and one downstairs, located underneath the stairway. However, the downstairs bathroom was later converted into a closet. The upstairs bathroom is a large room located at the front of the manor. Several notable events took place in the bathroom, including Prue nearly being drowned in the shower by Barbas and Leo 's marriage proposal to Piper . [26]

Laundry Room

Additionally, there is a laundry room on the first floor that can be accessed through the kitchen. [27]

Garden1

The sisters in the garden.

The manor has a rather large garden, or backyard, which was rarely used by the sisters. When the manor was still a speakeasy in the 1920s, P. Russell met here with her lover Anton and consumed a potion here to triple the strength of her powers. [28] The garden was recreated by the Source of All Evil in his illusionary world to manipulate Piper . [29] Additionally, the sisters once spent a night in the garden to witness the  Aurora Borealis . [30]

Garage

Piper entering the Garage.

The manor has a garage at the end of their driveway, which is located behind the manor. In 2005 , Leo bought an old pick-up truck with the desire to fix it up and sell it. However, his plans were interrupted when he was taken away by the Angel of Destiny as an alternative to his destined death. [31]

The Manor in the Past, Alternate Timelines and Realities

Pardon my past.

Manor1924

The manor circa 1924.

In the 1920s, the Charmed Ones' great grandmother, P. Baxter operated a speakeasy out of the manor with her husband Gordon Johnson . She owned the Manor together with her cousins P. Bowen and P. Russell . Bowen was a celebrated photographer who had people lined up to get their portraits taken by her in the manor. Russell told people's fortunes and did certain magic for people for a price. In 1924 , Baxter and Bowen killed Russell in the manor after she turned evil and tried to kill them for their powers with her warlock lover, Anton .

HippiEManor

The manor in the sixties.

In 1967 , when Penny and Allen Halliwell were leaders in the peace-loving community, the manor was used as a hippie commune, where witches and Whitelighters would hang out and perform magic. Leo Wyatt frequented the Manor during this time. Penny and Allen were planning to hold a magical be-in where the witches in attendance would tap into the power of the Nexus to "ride the magical wave". Unfortunately, Penny's friend Robin allowed her warlock boyfriend, Nigel , to attack and kill Allen. Afterward, Penny vanquished both of them and became a powerful and determined witch.

Brain Drain

Charmed407 229

The manor as a mental hospital.

In 2001 , in order to get Piper to relinquish the powers of the Charmed Ones , the Source of All Evil kidnapped her and placed her inside an illusion in her mind. In her delusion, she became a patient in a mental hospital, which was located in the manor. After manipulation by the Source, Piper was driven to giving up her powers, though she was stopped in time by Leo and her sisters.

Centennial Charmed

Manor-centennial-charmed

The manor in Cole's reality.

In 2003 , in a twisted attempt to win Phoebe back, Cole accepted the offer to become an Avatar , giving him the power to alter reality. He created a new reality where Piper and Phoebe had never met Paige , thus ensuring the Charmed Ones were never reconstituted. However, Paige accidentally wound up in the new reality as well and managed to reunite her sisters and Phoebe vanquished Cole once and for all. In this reality, the manor was controlled by Cole and his demons, with Phoebe being stuck in the manor and a loveless marriage.

Chris-Crossed

Charmed610 251

The manor as a museum.

In 2003 , it is revealed by Chris Halliwell that Wyatt would turn evil in the future and ruled the entire city of San Francisco after magic was exposed. Wyatt had transformed the manor in a museum to show the power from which he came. The manor was filled with several memorabilia of important events in the lives of the Charmed Ones and tours were given to mortals.

Kill Billie: Vol. 2 and Forever Charmed

Charmed821 617

The manor destroyed.

In 2006 , a battle between Christy and Billie Jenkins and the Halliwell Sisters was fought. In the progress, both respective sisters had obtained the powerful force, known as the Hollow , to destroy each other. However, the clash of their powers destroyed the manor in a huge explosion, killing all but Piper and Billie. Both sisters then set out to change the past and save their respective sisters. Piper and her family managed to prevent the manor from being destroyed in a new timeline by returning the Hollow to its burial ground. The Ultimate Battle was later won when Billie realized she was being manipulated and joined the Charmed Ones to vanquish Christy and the Triad .

Door Tradition

The "Unaired Pilot".

A trademark of Charmed is that the front door is magically closed at the end of each season. This tradition started in both the unaired and aired pilot by Prue Halliwell . Since then, every season finale ended with the door magically being closed. [32]

  • Season 1 : Prue closes the front door with her telekinesis, using her finger. [33]
  • Season 2 : Prue closes the front door with her Telekinesis , using her finger. [34]
  • Season 3 : Shax violently slams the doors shut as he whirls out of the manor, shattering the glass. [35]
  • Season 4 : The Angel of Destiny magically closes the front door when he flies out of the Manor. [36]
  • Season 5 : Chris closes the front door with his Telekinesis after sending Leo to an undisclosed location. [37]
  • Season 6 : The doors of the delivery room in the hospital automatically close when Leo goes in with his newborn son to visit Piper . [38]
  • Season 7 : The front door magically closes as Darryl Morris leaves the front porch. The sound of Telekinesis is heard, most likely as a reference to Prue , who is implied to have closed the door from the afterlife. [39]
  • Season 8 : Piper's granddaughter, Prudence Halliwell , closes the front door with her Telekinesis , using her hand. [40]
  • Season 9 : Prue closes the front door of the Halliwell Manor replica, located in the Nexus of The All with her telekinesis , using her hand.
  • Season 10 : Prue, whose spirit telekinetically closed the front door. [41]

Other Occasions

  • Phoebe telekinetically closed the door when possessed by the Woogyman . ( " Is There a Woogy in the House? " )

Notes and Trivia

Halliwell Manor Dollhouse

Halliwell Manor Dollhouse

House

Both the 1998 and 2018 versions of Charmed end on a shot of the Manor.

  • At the beginning of Season 1 the Halliwell manor's address was 7571. It was later changed to 1329.
  • In the promo for the Unaired Pilot , the Manor was called "Warren Manor".
  • Throughout the series, there is a running gag that the Grandfather Clock in the foyer is constantly being destroyed, and having to be repaired. The crew joked there had to be Grandfather Repair Shop down the road.
  • The manor is used as an example in one of the lectures of Professor Whittlesey , a professor at Berkeley University , in her Architectural History Class. Whittlesey stated that the original manor was a masterpiece and commented on its location and beautiful Victorian architecture.
  • A dollhouse replica of Halliwell Manor was constructed by Penny Halliwell . The dollhouse appeared in the episodes " Scry Hard " and "Repo Manor". In both episodes, a person was shrunk and trapped in the dollhouse.
  • In " Sight Unseen ", Cole turns on the air conditioning and opens all windows so the demon Troxa would become visible. However, in " Oh My Goddess! Part 1 ", Phoebe asked why they never got air conditioning.
  • The real house was used for filming the Unaired Pilot of Charmed. All scenes in the manor, except the ones in the attic, were filmed in the real house.
  • The first 6 seasons of Charmed (1998-2004), the interior of the Halliwell Manor was filmed and located at The Ray Art Studios . In 2004, the studio was sold and the demolished so production had to move. The set then moved to Paramount Studios for the remainder of the series.
  • In the series finale of the reboot , the house made an appearance after the producers received permission to use it. [42]

Changes in Layout

ManorLayout

Manor Floorplan

  • When the manor was shown from the outside, the front porch is about 3ā€“5 feet long, but it from the inside, it appears at least 10 feet long. This is most notable in " The Importance of Being Phoebe " and " It's a Bad, Bad, Bad, Bad World, Part 2 ".
  • In several episodes, it is shown the attic has a window that is not present in the exterior shots of the manor.
  • The actual number of bedrooms on the second floor is unclear.
  • Wyatt 's nursery in Piper and Leo's bedroom is initially situated in the closet adjacent to an exterior window but is later moved to a closet beside the bed.
  • The number of bedrooms on the second floor seemed to be three. [43] However, when Phoebe and Paige temporarily moved out of the Manor, Piper converted their rooms into a bedroom for Wyatt and a fitness room. When Phoebe and Paige moved back to the Manor, one of the rooms continued to be used as Wyatt's bedroom, but which room the sisters returned to is unclear.
  • In " Scry Hard ", Piper told Leo that Penny used to have a sewing room on the second floor, which was never mentioned before or after.
  • The view of San Francisco out of various windows has changed over the seasons.
  • In Season 1 and 2, a downstairs bathroom is located beneath the stairs. [44] However, this is later changed into a closet without explanation. [45]
  • In the Unaired Pilot , there was a small herb garden next to the manor.
  • The floor of the kitchen was originally purple to match the worktops, which can be seen most clearly in the episodes " The Power of Two " and " Is There a Woogy in the House? ". In Season 2 , this changed to brown-beige, which it remained for the rest of the series.
  • The basement entrance has changed various times throughout the series. In season 1 , the door is shown to open directly onto the stairs. In later episodes, there appears to be flooring at the top of the stairs.
  • In " That '70s Episode ", Phoebe is able to listen to Grams and Patty talking upstairs using the vent by the kitchen door. However, in terms of layout, this would be impossible.
  • In the first two seasons, the real inside of the Manor was used whenever shooting an outdoor scene. This caused the wall and staircase of the real house to be seen, which are directly at the door when entering. However, in the Halliwell Manor, the staircase is further away with the parlor in between.
  • In certain episodes, the driveway has a patch of grass in the center, while other times, the driveway is completely paved.

Historical Marker Located at either end of avenue.

The "Halliwell Manor", known as the Innes Home, is built in the Eastlake Victorian style and was built in 1887 for City Councilman Daniel Innes. The house has some hints of Japanese architecture in the decorative porch woodwork. Its second owner bought the house in 1920, and remained there until his death in 1971, having added features like a wine cellar. This house is also owned by Murray Burns and might be one of the most familiar Victorian style houses to contemporary viewers.

The house is located in the Angelino Heights district of Los Angeles , California on 1329 Carroll Avenue. Angelino Heights is known for its Victorian-style manors and homes. The homes on Carroll Avenue mirror the extravagance, architecture, and coloration of homes found in Alamo Square and the Castro District of San Francisco, California. Aside from appearing in Charmed , the manor and other houses in the area are also used in various other films and series.

In the episode " Is There a Woogy in the House? ", Prue and Piper marked the location of the Manor that determined the Spiritual Nexus that lay beneath the house. In reality, where the house is located on the map was actually an apartment building and a soccer field.

Take a Tour of the Charmed House!

Just got a comment on my Charmed page from Gary, who heard tours are given of the interior of the Charmed House and he needed me to investigate!

After scouring Google, I found this website which describes walking tours of Angelino Heights (where the Charmed House is located) given by the Los Angeles Conservancy. According to the author of the blog, the owner of the Charmed home allows guests on the tour to view the interior of his property. You can learn more about the tour and make reservations on the Los Angeles Conservancy’s website .

Scroll down to “Angelino Heights” under “Tour Descriptions” to learn more about the tour.

Don’t be disappointed when you see the interior, though. While Charmed does use the Carroll Avenue home to film exteriors, the interiors are filmed exclusively on a sound-stage.

Until next time, Happy Stalking!

Stalk It: Tours of Angelino Heights are given the first Saturday of every month at 10am. You can make reservations here . The Conservancy recommends booking far in advance. This tour sounds pretty incredible, even for those who aren’t Charmed fans. You will get to see some incredible architecture and some of the most unique homes in Los Angeles!

i love charmed i watch every episode over and over on demand

I live in Los Angeles California and the charmed house is only 5 minutes away from where I stay. I took some pictures but I can’t upload on here. But its totally amazing. Love charmed so much!!!! :’) Swear I’m the biggest charmed fan.. Lol

are they still giving tours of the house in 2015?

Are you allowed to go inside the house

The Charmed house can be seen in the background of the movie “The Guilt Trip” in the next to last scene in the movie. The two lead characters visit a house to see someone and while they are standing in front of the door the angle permits you to see that the house next door is the Charmed house (it’s a quick glimpse). Amusingly, they use Dan’s house from season two and many scenes were shot in Charmed looking over to the manor from his front stoop. I recognized the street immediately due to the retaining walls on the sidewalks (Charmed fans will recognize those) and started looking really hard to see if I could spot the Charmed manor and there it was in the background! I love spotting stuff like this.

I guess you can say its like how they were letting people take a tour in the future on season 6 episode 10 Chris-Crossed. If I lived in that house I would make it exactly like the show. And it would make me feel like I am really on the show.

I heard the charmed house is now available for rent!

Do you have locations for: The Bay Mirror, Buckmans Auction House, Paige’s work at Social Services, Cole’s Apartment, etc…?

the exterior shot of cole’s penthouse building is actually located in Long Beach, CA, and is a historic building known as Villa Riviera (built in 1928), located on the corner of Shoreline Drive and Ocean Blvd

if you look close the Bay mirror is the same as the police station in the show.

And Henry’s April office šŸ™‚

Sorry Henry’s Parole office

The exterior of Cole’s penthouse building, it isn’t located in Long beach but in San Francisco, across California Street and Mason Street (sorry for my english I’m french)

I am going to get the halliwell maner when i am older hopfully

Innes House

Popularly known as the "Charmed" house, for its role in the popular television show, it was one of the original homes constructed on Carroll Avenue in the late 1880s. This is one of three easements held by the Conservancy on Carroll Avenue.

The Innes House is one of the original homes constructed during the development of Carroll Avenue in Angelino Heights in the late 1880s. The home was built for Daniel Innes, a socially prominent city councilman and real estate developer. Designed in the Eastlake style, the two-story home features tailored, rectangular lines that are further emphasized by the vertical grooves in the decorative wood trim. The exterior displays such classic Victorian details as windows with upper panes bordered with stained glass. The interior is also Victorian in style, with a classic double parlor with redwood trim, cast-iron fireplaces, and lacquered pocket doors.

The house has had relatively few owners. The Innes family lived in the home for nearly forty years. In 1920, they sold the property to Dominic Iannorone, an Italian barber, who resided there until his death in 1971.

By the 1950s, many of Angelino Heights’ elaborate homes proved too expensive to maintain for residents moving into the neighborhood, and the Carroll Avenue mansions fell into disrepair. During the 1970s, the area experienced a renaissance, and many of the original properties were purchased by new owners who restored the historic details of their homes.

Today, the neighborhood remains highly intact, and Angelino Heights represents one of the largest concentration of Victorian homes remaining in the city. The 1300 block of Carroll Avenue was listed as a National Register Historic District in 1976. Angelino Heights became Los Angeles’ first Historic Preservation Overlay Zone (HPOZ) in 1983. The Conservancy holds an easement protecting the home’s exterior faƧade as well as intact interior features, including original woodwork, hardware, and decorative details such as a newel post with a brass lamp and plaster ceiling medallions throughout. It is one of three easements held by the Conservancy on Carroll Avenue, along with the Haskins House and the Heim House.

Love this area. That house has been up for sale for a few years now. Last time I visited someone had put down an offer and they were deciding what to do with all the furniture contained within.

@merricat: Ah! I did see that it wasn't entirely vacant, but could not tell whether it was furniture or building materials stored inside. The "For Sale" sign was small with the phone number hand-written, so probably "For Sale by Owner" (though it didn't say that.) I'm glad the Daturas are still getting enough water to survive, as the grounds have been neglected. Would love to see the house get some attention soon.

This post was awesome and the photos are great. I had a wonderful time reading your post. Big thanks for sharing and keep posting.

Just read this and really enjoyed the information you've given as I wanted to know where abouts the real house was. I'm hoping to go and see it when I go to America in a couple of years time :)

Great post! I started watching the show again and the Halliwell Manor is truly something. I guessed it was kinda real (interiors are usually sets) but it was just a guess. Awesome post really :)

Something Wicked This Way Comes: The Charmed House

I have always liked witches, but I was really taken with the Halliwell sisters in Charmed. The three sisters were the most powerful witches in the world, and they lived in their grandmotherā€™s house in San Francisco. The house was not only one of the main stages of the production but the house also had plot significance as a spiritual nexus.

Innes House Plan 1

The real house used for the exteriors is located at 1329 Carroll Avenue in Angelino Heights, Los Angeles. And while many may know it as the Halliwell Manor it’s real name is the Innes House. It was built for councilman Daniel Innes, a socially prominent city councilman and real estate developer.Ā  The Innes family lived in the home for nearly forty years before selling the property in 1920, who owned if for another fifty years. The home’s exterior features tailored, rectangular lines, emphasized by vertical grooves with decorative wood trim and classic Victorian details. Inside the house you will find classic Victorian style with a double parlor.

Innes House Plan 2

In the 1950s, many of the Angelino Heights mansions proved too expensive for residents to maintain.Ā  During the 1970s the area underwent a renaissance and many of the original properties were purchased by new owners who did historical restoration on them. The neighborhood remains highly intact and Angelino Heights represents the largest concentration of Victorian homes remaining in Los Angeles.Ā  Carroll Avenueā€™s 1300 block was listed as a National Register Historic District in 1976 and later became Los Angelesā€™ first Historic Preservation Overlay Zone in 1983. Today, the Los Angeles Conservancy holds an easement that protects the homeā€™s exterior faƧade as well as interior features that include woodwork, hardware, and decorative details.

Innes House Plan 3

Even with all its history this house plan is probably best known as the residence of the Charmed Ones. Ā If you happen to be in Los Angeles and want to take a tour of this historic Victorian house plan , walking tours walking tours are offered the first Saturday of every month. And while you might not be able to take up residence in the Angelino Heights mansion for yourself, you can find homes with similar styles in the Victorian house plan collection Ā at the House Designers.

Quaint area with a lot of history. But don't be obnoxious, loud, or trespass as this area is a residential area with people who live here full time. But there's plenty of street parking and most neighbors are friendly! Just a little bit over, you can also see the house the filmed Michael Jackson's Thriller music video!

AN ABSOLUTELY MUST DO! A FREE EVENT & FREE PARKING! The Charmed House is in the 1300 block of Carroll Avenue. The TV series Charmed is a show about several witches who reside @ "Halliwell Manor". Although the series was set in San Francisco, in real life the House is located in LA. It is the historic Innes House in the Angelina Heights section of Los Angeles near Echo Park. The show is about 3 sisters who discover that they are descendants of a long line of powerful witches. Each of the witches is very special in that they each have unique outer worldly abilities. Their magical powers includes stopping time, moving objects, & foreseeing the future. Their goal is to wage war & battle the forces of evil on the planet. "The Charmed Ones" combine their mystical powers. The combination creates "The Power of Three" whose Forces are Unstoppable! Demons BEWARE of The Charmed Ones! The Charmed House is located on Carroll Avenue & in one of LA's oldest neighborhoods. The home was built in the late 1880s for the real estate developer & socially prominent city councilman Daniel Innes. It was designed in the Eastlake style. It is a 2 story home featuring Classic Victorian details. The Innes Family lived here for almost 40 forty years. In 1920, they sold the home to Dominic Iannorone. He was an Italian barber, who resided here until he died in 1971. The Michael Jackson's Thriller House is 2 houses down & should be seen as well. The Thriller House made famous by MJ video with Dancing Zombies. Ola Ray was fleeing from the zombies at the end of Michael Jackson's 1983 "Thriller" video. It was directed by John Landis, changed & influenced MTV & became the gold standard for all future music videos. The Thriller house was also seen in The TV Show Charmed. It was in the fourth Season of Charmed that the house appears & the episode was called "Size Matters". So there is a cross over appeal here. You can see my review for The Thriller House for more details. PLEASE DO NOT BOTHER THE RESIDENTS. THESE ARE PEOPLE'S HOMES THAT THEY LIVE IN & THEY ARE NOT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. A Picture on the sidewalk is as far as you should go. DO NOT DISTURB THE RESIDENTS! BE QUIET & RESPECTFUL! You should also check out the whole street which is filled with Beautiful Victorian Homes & a great view of DTLA. Carroll Avenue is Famous for its preservation of its Gorgeous Victorian Homes. They are BEAUTIFUL! Carroll Avenue has now been given 3 important designations by the government. It is now on the US National Register of Historic Places, a US Historic District, & a Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument. It's Fun coming day or night. Nighttime takes on a bit of a Haunting air especially during October around Halloween. Have Fun exploring the Charmed House & your expedition through the whole neighborhood. Have a Spook-Tacular Time! It used to be, you had to have Mega Bucks & be really Rich to have the Good Life, not anymore. The Game has changed. You've been Upgraded. Now You Can Live Like a King on a Limited Budget!

Popularly known as Halliwell Manor or Halliwell House , the Innes House is the former home of San Franciscan councilman Daniel Innes .

The home is located at 1329 Carroll Avenue in the Angelino Heights district in Echo Park in Los Angeles, California, United States of America.

InnesHousePorch

The porch of the home

The house displays some Japanese decoration in the architecture of the porchwork and was built in the Eastlake Victorian style - a style that is popular in the Angelino Heights district of Los Angeles, California. The house also has art glass panes on the upper halves of the windows and a handcarved balustrade.

Owners of the Home [ ]

Daniel Innes and his family occupied the home for over thirty years from its conception in c. 1887 to about 1920. In 1920, the house's second owner purchased the home and remained there until his death in 1971. The second owner, name unknown, added several features to the home, including a wine cellar. The house is currently owned by Murray Burns, also known as W.J. Heffernan.

Declaration [ ]

The Innes House, as well as all the other houses found on the 1300 block of Carroll Avenue from Edgeware to Douglas Street belong to the American National Register of Historic Places .

It was declared a historic place on February 3, 1971.

Kidnapping of Phoebe Halliwell [ ]

Phoebe-Halliwell0001

In May 2006, an item ran on Defamer.com regarding the Innes House, its possible tenants, its owner, and an incident involving local cops investigating a report that a woman named Phoebe Halliwell had been kidnapped from the premises. Of course, the woman in question doesn't actually exist.

The Defamer web-posting and its ensuing comments raise the issue of owner Burns' use of the house for film shoots, and whether or not there is a tenant on the premises who rents the upstairs. Regardless, Burns also allows Conservancy tour-takers to enter this house and view the downstairs.

How To Decorate Your Home Like The House From Charmed

Halliwell Manor from Charmed

Whether you're a fan of the original or the reboot, there's no denying the Power of Three comes with a great sense of style. Why wouldn't you want to learn how to decorate your home like the ones on "Charmed?" The Halliwell sisters and the Vera/Vaughn trio lived in magnificent Victorian style homes with whimsigothic decorĀ in different parts of the country. There's something magical about both of these houses.

Hooked on Houses explains that the original "Charmed" house ā€” Halliwell Manor ā€” is in the center of a pentagram. That, and being built over the nexus of evil, gave these particular women their powers. However, it was also a responsibility. The family lived there for generations, guarding a concentration of energy that could have gone either way ā€” good or evil ā€” and made them responsible for ensuring the forces of good outweighed those of evil on the universal scale. Vera Manor, on the other hand, had its own armory. It contained all the weapons the second-coming of the "Charmed" trio might need to avenge their mother's death and continue her fight against evil. Here are some charming ways to bring the Power of Three to your home.

Opt for bold colors

The Halliwell's Victorian manor was in San Francisco on the show, but Hooked on Houses reports that this historic home is actually in Los Angeles, just outside Echo Park. The Innes family lived there for 40 years before selling, but many neighboring houses fell into disrepair in the 1950s. The CW network selected the Innes House to serve as the exterior of Halliwell Manor (via Los Angeles Conservancy ). It was similar enough to the famous Painted Ladies near Alamo Square in San Francisco to be believable.

Painted Ladies is a term used to describe Victorian houses that have been repainted in three or more colors to enhance their entryways (via The Color Concierge ). Changing the colors of a home can make all the difference. Switching from neutral shades to brighter, more vibrant ones can do wonders for your home. You don't need to paint your house pink to embrace the painted lady theme. Bright blues, whites, greens, and brick reds can make your exterior look gorgeous while blending in with your more conservative red-brick neighbors. If trying to replicate one of the "Charmed" houses, opt for red. The exterior of Halliwell Manor was cranberry with white trim. Behr's Cranberry Whip from The Home Depot is an excellent choice to recreate the look.

Use stained glass for windows and doors

The next best feature of Halliwell Manor? The great stained glass front door. The good news is this is trendy at the moment, so there are quite a few places to find either full doors with stained glass or stained-glass panels you can add to existing doors. If you live in the UK, The Stained Glass Doors Company offers custom-built doors and a fitting service in London, Kent, Guildford, Surrey, Winchester, Southampton, and Sussex. The glass is glazed on-site and fitted into reclaimed and salvaged Victorian, Edwardian, and Georgian doors.

If you want a design like Halliwell Manor, this find from Etsy is an excellent choice. It is painted white, not stained, but reclaimed from a similar period, and has a design like the one on the Halliwell's front door. You can find a matching pair of doors like the ones from "Charmed" on eBay. Of course, if money is no concern, you can always custom order your doors. Etsy has some excellent choices of both doors and door inserts that can help bring the Power of Three to your current or future home.

Brighten up your attic with windows

The attic is where the "Charmed" ones first discovered they had the Power of Three. It's where they kept the Book of Shadows, the Halliwell spell book, family history, and many other items former generations had collected over the years. You may have plenty of family memorabilia and storage containers in your attic already. If you don't, there are ways to add stylized pieces to create this effect. A Cottage in the City sells storage benches and trunks of reclaimed pine that will lead to incredible attic transformations .

Windows were a less common feature in the Halliwell and Vera Manor attics. The Halliwells, of course, had stained glass. Stained glass was one of the best things about Halliwell Manor, where many Millennials grew up wanting to live (via Buzzfeed ). While often overlooked, attics are a wonderful place to add windows (via Forner LaVoy Builders ). They bring light in, allowing you to do more with the space. Most of the spells, incantations, and other escapades the Halliwell Manor attic was known for could not have happened with the lighting most of us have in our attics.

Line your stairs in dark tones

There's an excellent staircase in "Charmed." Of course, installing a staircase is a significant project. However, if you already have one, there are some witchy ways for you to dress it up. Stair runners are a fantastic way to bring color and style to your steps. Both "Charmed" houses favor dark shades ā€” red in the reboot and navy blue in the original. You can recreate this style in many ways. Opt for heavy fabrics in dark colors with floral prints if you want to imitate one of the manors. These accent the dark wood common in Victorian homes.

According to Rugs , stair runners are not just a decorative addition to your home but also a practical one. They absorb noise and buffer wear and tear, which makes them great for homes with kids or pets. Professional installation is best when using rug runners on stairs. The good news is that there are some other areas where rug runners also look great, and you can put them in these places yourself ā€” hallways, kitchens, bedrooms, and entryways. To get started, choose your fabric and colors, then measure. You want to leave 2 to 3 inches on each side of your runner wherever you decide to put it.

Dress up your windows with lace curtains

The heavy lace you're likely thinking of when you hear about lace curtains is closer to the style that hung in Halliwell Manor than Vera Manor. However, those sheer curtains hanging in the house in the reboot are the modern-day version of lace curtains.

According to Voila Voile , you only think lace curtains are out of style because you imagine those old-school versions. Lace is now known as sheer and comes in many varieties and different color options. Lace is also easy to clean and maintain (via Hindustan Times ). You can hand wash, or in most cases, put it right in your washing machine on the gentle or delicate cycle. There are places besides curtains where you can use lace to turn up the Victorian vibe in your home. Use it as a runner on your tables or under dishes and vases on display.

Add wood beams to a room

In the traditional sense, the conservatory room was only in the original version of "Charmed." Only Victorian homes, and possibly mansions, have conservatories. Nowadays, we'd call this a sunroom, or maybe a greenroom. There is one of those in the reboot, located ā€” not unlike the original ā€” next to the dining room.

The primary benefit of this space in Halliwell Manor is lots of stained glass. In the Vera manor, the light filters through loads of windows. Other features make these rooms bright and airy too. For the Halliwells, this was whitewashed beams across a white ceiling. For the Vera/Vaughns, the ceiling beams are darker but narrower, making the room seem open and spacious. Have beams already, but they're too dark? You can whitewash them, per Maison de Pax . Don't have them? They're easy to add, and you don't need to use real wood if cost is an issue (via Instructables ).

Show off your dishes with glass-faced cabinets

The glass cabinet style was widespread in Victorian-style kitchens. The manor was nothing if not traditional. Woodmaster Kitchens points out some reasons you might want these in your home even if you aren't a Haliwell hopeful. The glass can lighten up dark spaces and make your kitchen lighting scheme shine. While the girls kept potion-making supplies in their cabinets, you are welcome to showcase whatever you want. These items could be glasses, plates, or even decorations.

If you're not sure you want everyone to see everything in your cabinets, you have some options. Textured options provide visual interest to prevent them from being so see-through (via Kitchen Magic ). Reeded glass features vertical lines in a repetitive pattern. These can hide all manner of sins and slapdash stacking following dishwashing. Water glass is probably a better option if you're looking for glass that isn't entirely clear but doesn't block out all your beautiful dishware. This non-linear and more complex pattern works with Victorian and more contemporary decorating styles.

Ditch the paint and hang up wallpaper

The Halliwell and Vera Manor feature their fair share of wallpaper . This style was trendy back in the day. The good news is that it's making a comeback. At least, according to The Washington Post . Be more careful with this than paint, though. It's more challenging to change, so you want to ensure you're not choosing a faddish or trendy option you will fall out of love with in a year or two. If you're looking for Victorian-style wallpaper, Spoonflower has you covered.

Another trend seen in Halliwell Manor is the wallpaper on the ceiling. Lulu and Georgia have some traditional styles that work well if you're unsure about adding wallpaper to this part of your home. They create the look of textured paint instead of going all out with a pattern or print. You will join a long line of successful ceiling decorators. Ceilings used to be extensively decorated ā€” with plaster, gilding, and painted frescoes ā€” before the more recent trend of simply painting them (via OldĀ House Journal ).

Decorate your dining room

Both the Halliwell and Vera Manor have designated dining spaces. This look was a common design aspect in Victorian homes. The Halliwells, however, had upholstered, armless chairs surrounding their table. The Veras had a more contemporary design with wooden chairs and fabric cushions. However, the good news is that vintage is in right now. You can get either type of chair at places like Front Gate if you're trying to recreate one of the "Charmed" manors at your home.

Both dining rooms also had Victorian chandeliers and wallpaper. Lights Online recommend using a streamlined design to avoid competing with other design elements. Full, "Charmed"-level Victorian decor has an abundance of glitz. If you're looking for a more modern version, try pairing frilly options on your lamps with plain walls or couches. Alternatively, opt for simple lamps with intricate couches and ornate walls. That should help balance out your room.

Add comfort to the sitting room

Most houses now have living rooms, which the Halliwell Manor also had, but in their home, the sitting room was separate and used much more often. And in both the Halliwell and Vera Manors, these rooms are where the staircase starts. Staircases are a significant part of a home, even when they don't lead to enchanted attics and the Book of Shadows. A staircase is an entrance into its deeper realms.

In the original "Charmed," this is where the chandelier hung. In the Halliwell Manor, there were also velvet armchairs. Hipcouch recommends using them to add a bit of glamour to your home. You can also use a velvet couch if you have space or add some soft cushions or curtains. Add some contrasting jewel-toned pillows like bright teals, purples, and oranges for some fun. Pairing pillows is simpler than you might imagine (via Bobby Berk ). Stick to two to three colors and choose one large and one small scale pattern. This way, you won't overdo it.

Make your floors inviting

Parquet and Persian rugs are on the floor of the Halliwell foyer. This style looks beautiful in Victorian homes. However, there are still some things to consider, even when your elements are this simple. According to Catalina Rugs , the texture is as important as color and style when choosing a Persian rug. They recommend decorating with mid-century modern styles even if you have a Victorian home. Several Persian rugs in the Halliwell Manor have this style, including the home's exterior. It features bold pops of color and geometric designs that make a statement, and they look lovely with wood flooring.

You'll want parquet if you're trying to live like the characters on "Charmed". This flooring is typically in a herringbone pattern, but you can arrange it in many designs or variations (via goodworksfurniture ). Feel free to get creative with your color options. If you're looking to lighten and brighten the appearance of your foyer, you can whitewash your parquet. Like wood beams on a ceiling, this can make an enormous difference in the appearance of your home. You can also go dark and glossy if you prefer a more classic look.

Keep bathrooms bright and airy

In the Halliwell house, the bathrooms featured a variety of styles, colors, and designs. One of the bathrooms had a corner shower, while another had a tub with a surrounding curtain. Anyone who watched the original show knows the house had three bathrooms. Whether the third was a full or a half bath is debatable.

It seems like it would be a half bath, like most downstairs locations. However, anyone who saw the episode where Prue cloned herself remembers that all three Prues claimed to have used up all the water in the house with their long showers. So, unless there's some witchy way to shower in a half bath, we are left to believe there was a full one downstairs. Decorate the walls with wallpaper to create a vintage-inspired bathroom in your home, per 21 Oak . Opt for simple floral prints or pastoral scenes. If wallpaper isn't your thing, choose light blue, mint green, creamy yellow, or dusty rose shades of paint for some vintage flair.

Make a big statement with oversized headboards

Oversized headboards are an essential decor element in all the bedrooms at Halliwell Manor. While the bed style is different in each room, the beds were big enough to fit three women. There is a sleigh-type bed in the Vera Manor, not unlike the one in Piper's bedroom in the original. MattressNut suggests adding fabric and upholstery to make heavy wood pieces seem lighter. This tip works whether your style is Victorian or more modern.

One of the easiest ways to dress up or update a sleigh bed is by adding fabric and foam batting over the traditional wood. You can cover the wood frame with this fabric and leave it smooth or add accents, like buttons and tufting. Adding stylish accessories, like those jewel-toned pillows you used in your sitting room, can also help brighten a room if you are overwhelmed by a dark sleigh bed but don't want to deal with the task of upholstering it. Many of the beds in Halliwell Manor had pillows of some sort piled on them. The room's occupant determined the type and color. You can do the same in your home, filling each room with unique style and personality.

Old Arbat District: the Art Quarter

Holidays are bright and colourful, we all love them because they form a ray of light amongst the grey monotony of the daily grind. Arbat is a real street-holiday, where it is always noisy and fun: people meet, walk, watch the performances of talented street artists with clowns, singers and dancers strutting their stuff. Right on the pavement, artists proudly exhibit their works.

There is a very special atmosphere here that has long attracted representatives of the creative intelligentsia. L. Tolstoy and S. Yesenin, A. Pushkin and his young wife N. Goncharov, A. Blok and B. Pasternak are fondly remembered by the hallowed paving stones along Arbat. It is of no surprise that the heroes of the famous novel ‘War and Peace’ were ‘registered’.

We would like to invite you to take a walk with us along the historic Old Arbat! We will talk about the history and architecture of the most romantic street in Moscow.

  • You will hear a lot of interesting facts about the grand houses that were located here and their wealthy residents.
  • You will learn how a once inexpensive inn for carriage drivers has since turned into one of the best restaurants in the capital!
  • You will see the famous house where A. Pushkin and N. Goncharova spent their honeymoon and stand at the wall dedicated to the memory of post punk/new wave icon Viktor
  • You will be carried away down the beautiful side streets such as: Bolshaya Afanasyevsky, Nikolopeskovsky, Filippovsky, Krivoarbatsky. In a bygone era, these streets were part of Arbat and were bustling with its spirit.

B.Okudzhava dedicated some of his lyrical poems to Arbat, his favourite street from childhood. A. Rybakov, author of the famous novel ‘Children of the Arbat’ also lived here. There is also a little corner of Bulgakov's Moscow on Arbat - the former Torgsin store (now the ‘The Seventh Continent’), where the novel ‘The Master and Margarita’ unfolded.

Every house on Arbat is a piece of history, and we will dive into this history head first.

Boris Pasternak's museum house

Guided tour of Pasternak's museum housein Peredelkino village

Pasternakā€™s ā€œimportant achievement both in contemporary lyrical poetry and in the field of the great Russian epic tradition" was honored with a Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958. For many readers outside Russia, Pasternak is known mainly as the author of the touching historical novel Doctor Zhivago written in 1957. The novel as a whole communicates the haphazard, uncertain and chaotic quality of life caused by the Russian Revolution and the heroic case of quiet humanism demonstrated by a single person.

Pasternakā€™s translations of Georgian poets favored by Joseph Stalin probably saved his life during the purges of the 1930ā€™s. However, the individualistic Pasternak was not suited to the Soviet artistic climate when art was required to have a clear socialism-inspired agenda and so Russian publishers were unwilling to print Pasternakā€™s novel. In fact, Doctor Zhivago first appeared in Italy in 1957.

Pasternak won his Nobel Prize the following year. Despite Pasternak politely declining his Nobel Prize quoting: ā€œbecause of the significance given to this award in the society to which I belongā€, the award nevertheless spread his fame well beyond Russia. He ended his life in virtual exile in an artist's community in Peredelkino village. His last poems are devoted to love, to freedom and to reconciliation with God.

Pasternak was rehabilitated posthumously in 1987. In 1988, after being banned for three decades, "Doctor Zhivago" was published in the USSR. In 1989 Pasternak's son accepted his father's Nobel medal in Stockholm.

Pastenak loved his house in Peredelkino, the house and surrounding nature featuring in his poetry. The poet considered the cycle of poems "Peredelkino", which he completed in the spring of 1941, to be his best work. The poet spent the first difficult months of the war in Peredelkino; he completed the novel "Doctor Zhivago" here, wrote the Lara poems and translated Shakespeare and Goethe. It was in this house that he learned he was to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature on October 23rd 1958. He died here on May 30 1960.

The house in Peredelkino only acquired the status of a museum in 1990, thirty years after the poet's death and a century after his birth. The museum has fully preserved the environment and atmosphere of the house where Boris Pasternak lived and worked. The director of the museum is Elena Pasternak, grandaughter of Boris Pasternak.
