Live reviews

When Steve Marriot left the Small Faces 1969 its must have been hard to imagine what was to come of the iconic British band. In many people eyes Steve Marriot was a one off! A special talent, and I, myself, have to agree.

Who would have thought that spilt helped create two new and equally formidable bands. Steve Marriot joined up with Peter Frampton and to create the band Humble Pie. And the remaining ‘Small Faces’ teamed up with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood to become reincarnated as ‘The Faces’. An appropriate change considering the average height of the band had risen a good few inches with their arrival.

The band became a huge success and were one of the biggest grossing acts in the early 70’s, They had a string of hits such as, ”Had Me a Real Good Time”, "Stay with Me", "Cindy Incidentally" and "Pool Hall Richard”. Despite their success, relationships within the band became strained by the mid 70’s, many fans believe his was largely down to Rod Stewarts solo success. By 1975 the band went their separate ways.

Luckily for us there are many rumours about an upcoming reunion! Imagine that after 30 or so years! Great songs, Ronnie Woods jamming rhythm and blues riffs and Rod Stewards belting out his husky voice! If Carlsberg made bands……. it would possible be The Faces!

The Faces are an English rock band, formed back in 1969 by members of the Small Faces after Steve Marriott left the group to form Humble Pie. The remaining Small Faces – Ronnie Lane (bass), Ian McLagan (keyboards) and Kenney Jones (drums and percussion) – were joined by Ronnie Wood on guitar and Rod Stewart on lead vocals, both from the Jeff Beck Group, and the new line up was renamed The Faces.

Biography

The Faces released four studio albums and toured regularly until the autumn of 1975, although Stewart simultaneously pursued a solo recording career, and during the band’s final year Wood also toured with The Rolling Stones, whom he later joined. Wood and Stewart parted ways with Beck and joined Lane, McLagan and Jones full time. With the addition of Stewart and Wood, the ‘Small’ part of the original band name was dropped, partly because the two newcomers (at 5’8” and 5.9” respectively) were significantly taller than the three former Small Faces.

Hoping to capitalize on the Small Faces earlier success, record company executives wanted the band to keep their old name; however, the band objected, arguing the personal changes resulted in a group very different from the Small Faces. As a compromise, in the US their debut album was credited to the Small Faces, while subsequent albums appeared under their new name. The group regularly toured Britain, Europe and the United States from 1970 to 1975, and were among the top-grossing live acts in that period. In 1974 their touring also encompassed Australia, New Zealand and Japan. Among their most successful songs were ‘Had Me a Real Good Time’, ‘Cindy Incidentally’, ‘Pool Hall Richard’ and their breakthrough UK hit ‘Stay With Me’.

In 2012 the band was inducted into the prestigious Rock n Roll Hall of Fame alongside the Small Faces.

2015 saw Kenney Jones, Ronnie Wood and Rod Stewart get back together for a reunion concert at Kenney’s polo club in aid of Prostate Cancer UK.

The band are currently working on a number of re-releases.

50 Years Ago: The Faces Play Their Final Concert

At one point, you'd have been hard pressed to find a better rock and roll band than the Faces . Unfortunately, Rod Stewart and company came apart after one final early-'70s member defection. Their final concert was on Nov. 1, 1975 at the Labor Temple in Minneapolis.

In truth, even when the Faces' 1975 tour began in August, all parties must have had a sense that the end was near. After all, Stewart's tandem solo career had taken off, and Ron Wood had already taken a second gig with Rolling Stones .

They hadn't recorded an album since 1973's ragged-but-right Ooh La La , which Stewart described as "a bloody mess." Founding bassist Ronnie Lane had been gone since the summer of 1973, too. Then came a stop in Minnesota, and the official end of a group whose records were as pure and genuine as could be – and whose live shows were a joyous, often-inebriated celebration.

The Faces had grown out of the dissolution of the Small Faces in 1969, when singer/guitarist Steve Marriott 's left for Humble Pie . Lane, drummer Kenney Jones and the late keyboardist Ian McLagan then joined with frontman Stewart and guitarist Wood to begin anew. But the newly rechristened Faces' ragged, raunchy rock and roll ride was immediately beset with trouble.

Stewart had started solo work before joining the Faces. By 1971, he was selling millions of records thanks to the hit single "Maggie May," and the album Every Picture Tells A Story . "Before long, I was accused of keeping the best songs for myself," Stewart said in his autobiography Rod . "That was never the case and, logically, it couldn't have been because I didn't write songs all the time, like a proper songwriter."

The late Lane was replaced by Tetsu Yamauchi, but the Faces never caught fire the way Stewart did as a solo act. Their 1974 single "You Can Make Me Dance, Sing or Anything," the sole studio output from this lineup, reached No. 12 in the U.K. but failed to chart at all in the U.S.

Then the Rolling Stones came calling, after splitting with Mick Taylor . "The Stones had courted Woody for ages, and their interest in him was no secret," Stewart remembered in Rod . "I don't think anyone was surprised that eventually he couldn't resist, or blamed him for succumbing. How many guitarists wouldn't have wanted to join the Rolling Stones?"

Wood at first played in both bands, touring across America twice in the summer of '75. When the guitarist finally settled on his new gig, the Faces were no more.

The biggest L.A. culture news

Theater Critic Charles McNulty reviews “Illinoise,” a hallucinatory dance musical based on Sufjan Stevens’ 2005 concept album “Illinois,” which offers a fitting end to a Broadway season that seemed happiest when operating beyond conventional assumptions and practices.

Staff writer Ashley Lee takes a look into “Galilee, 34,” a controversial new play about Jesus running through May 12 at Costa Mesa’s South Coast Repertory . The play takes place months after the crucifixion, when Jesus’ family and followers are trying to figure out how to proceed after the death of their leader.

Art Critic Christopher Knight launches some heat-seeking missles at LACMA’s plans to unveil a new (ill-advised) satellite museum in Las Vegas.

Staff writer Jireh Deng covered Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Mamet slamming Hollywood’s “garbage” DEI initiatives at the LA Times Festival of Books.

Assuming he missed Knight’s less-than-glowing thoughts on LACMA’s new Vegas location, museum director Michael Govan sat down with staff writer Jessica Gelt to talk about LACMA’s goals to develop a “strategic plan of regional partnerships” with museums — large and small — in order to pull more of its collection out of storage, and make it accessible to as many people as possible.

Charles McNulty files his roasty review of Broadway’s latest woefully underwhelming version of “ Cabaret” that can’t be saved, even by its awkwardly dressed star Eddie Redmayne.

More culture news, briefly ...

The recipients of the 2024 Doris Duke Artist Awards have been announced, and the winners are: Nataki Garrett (theater), Shamel Pitts (dance), Acosia Red Elk (dance), Esperanza Spalding (jazz), Chay Yew (theater), and Miguel Zenón (jazz). Now in its 11th year, the awards come with an unrestricted cash prize of $525,000 per artist, and up to $25,000 in retirement funds.

The Getty has returned an ancient bronze head to Türkiye (formerly Turkey). The head of a young man was acquired by the museum in 1971 and dates to c. 100 BCE–100 CE. While the body of the figure has not been identified, the head has been traced to the archaeological site of Bubon, in the Burdur province of southwestern Turkey — an area known for illegal excavations in the 1960s.

The Segerstrom Center for the Arts has announced its 2024-25 Family Series filled with programming suited for people big and small. The lineup includes the world-premiere of the Musicians of Bremen Live , as well as puppet play titled “Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch,” based on the book by Eileen Spinelli.

Geffen Playhouse’s new artistic director, playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney, has been elected as a new member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. The academy recognizes and honors the artistic excellence of its members, and also serves as a research center where accomplished individuals across disciplines can come together in search of answers to complex problems facing various communities and society at large.

The Getty’s PST ART is coming back this September with a theme of “art & science collide.” Facets of the programming began rolling out this week as the Getty inaugurated its PST Climate Impact Program aimed at bringing together PST’s 60-plus participating institutions around issues of climate action and sustainable exhibition practices.
