Tilicho Lake Annapurna Circuit Trek Itinerary with Length

  • Trip Overview

Tilicho Lake Annapurna Circuit Trek is a wonderful Himalayan hiking trip. Many trekkers who go for Annapurna Circuit also trek to Tilicho Lake as their side trip. It takes just 3 or 4 days more to visit Tilicho Lake. No camping is required, as new lodges have been built between Manang and the lake. The final approach to the lake is done in a day hike from the lodge at Tilicho Base Camp.

Tilicho Lake is situated in the Manang district of Nepal. It is considered as the highest lake on the earth at an altitude of 4949/ 16237 feet from sea level. This lake has been formed by the melt of all the glaciers from the northern slopes of the Annapurna Himalayan range and Throng Peak.

From the spiritual perspective, this lake is the blessed place for Hindus as well as Buddhists people. About this mountain lake, it has a description in Ramayana, the epic of Hindu’s, in the holy name of Kagbhusundi.

Apart from the lake, the other highlights of Tilicho Lake Annapurna Circuit Trek are distinct regional scenery as the circuit trail passes four regions (Lamjung, Manang, Mustang, and Myagdi); the splendid mountain views of Manaslu (8,000-plus meter peak), Annapurna II and IV, Annapurna III, Pisang, Tilicho, Gangapurna, Nilgiri, Annapurna I (8,000-plus meter peak) and Dhaulagiri (8,000-plus meter peak).

Moreover, in this trip you will enjoy the culture of different indigenous people influenced either by Buddhism or Hinduism, and also you will pass through the Mountain Rivers, terrace land, and various mountain flora and fauna.

Tilicho Lake Annapurna Circuit Trek can start from different places like Besi Sahar, Chamje, Dharapani, or Chame. In the below itinerary, the trek starts from Dharapani. Dharapani is reachable by 4/5 hours of jeep drive from Besi Sahar.

The hiking trail passes through country land inhabited by diverse ethnic groups and offers spectacular mountain scenery from the far northern Himalayas to the Tibetan Plateau. From Dharapani, you will trek to Chame, Pisang, and Manang. From Manang, you will be deviated from the main trail of Annapurna Circuit and head towards Tilicho Lake.

After visiting the lake, you will again join with the main trail of Annapurna Circuit at Yak Kharka. Then you start to cross over the Thorong La Pass. Thorung La is the highest point of Annapurna Circuit at the altitude of 5416 meters. It grants the magical scenery of the White Mountains.

After crossing Thorung La Pass (5416m) you descend to Muktinath temple, a celebrated Hindus pilgrimage with 108 spring water taps and mysterious natural gas fires. After the visit of Muktinath, you follow the trail along the edge of the Kali Gandaki River Valley to Jomsom. From Jomsom, by drive, you come to Pokhara, a picturesque town in Nepal.  From Pokhara, you will drive back to Kathmandu.

Trekking route to the Tilicho Lake

The Tilicho Lake Trek is a hiking expedition that will take you to one of the highest lakes in the world. At 4,919 meters above sea level, Tilicho Lake is a sight to behold. The trekking route also offers stunning views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.

The trek begins at Besisahar, a town in Lamjung. After an initial ascent, your first destination is Tal (1700 m), and Chame is the next. From there, you will hike to Pisang, at 3200 meters altitude. You will then trek to Manang at 3540 meters and kick-off to Khangsar at 3756 meters. In the course of your trip, you will pass across the beautiful villages of Ngawal, Munchi, and Braka. Similarly, the heart-melting views of Mount Annapurna, Gangapurna, Pisang Peak, and Tilicho Peak give you the most thrilling experience.

Tilicho Lake sits at an altitude of 4919m, and its surrounding sloppy landscapes will be risky but adventurous simultaneously.

From there, you will continue to ascend until you reach the summit of Thorong La Pass. Then you make your way to Muktinath, a sacred place for Hindu and Buddhist people. From Muktinath, you will trek to your last destination, Jomsom, from where you will fly back to Pokhara.

Preparing for the Tilicho Lake Trek

Now that you have all the necessary information, it’s time to start preparing for your trek. While there’s no one right way to do this, here are a few tips to help you get started:

First, ensure you’re physically and mentally prepared for the challenge ahead. Trekking at high altitudes can be strenuous, especially if you need to get used to it. Start by doing some hikes or walks in the weeks leading up to your trek. This will help your body adjust to the altitude and make the journey easier.

Preparing for Trekking

Secondly, pack appropriately. You’ll need plenty of clothes for both warm and cold weather, as well as sturdy shoes that can handle a variety of terrain. Don’t forget sunscreen, insect repellent, and a hat to protect you from the sun and bugs. And remember to pack your sense of adventure!

Finally, familiarize yourself with the route before you go. There’s nothing worse than getting lost in the middle of nowhere. Study the map and make sure you know where you’re going at all times.

Essential Gear for the Tilicho Lake Trek

Packing list

You’ll need a few pieces of essential gear for the Tilicho Lake Trek. Make sure you have a good backpack, sleeping bags, sturdy hiking shoes, water and snacks, and rain gear.

A good backpack is vital—you’ll want something roomy enough to fit all your gear but not too heavy that it becomes a burden. Make sure your shoes are well-worn and waterproof—the terrain can be unpredictable, and you don’t want wet feet for the entire trek. And finally, don’t forget snacks and water—you’ll need the energy to get to the top and want to stay hydrated along the way.

It’s also important to pack wisely. Leave room in your backpack for souvenirs, and be mindful of your weight, so you don’t tire yourself out before you even start the trek.

Tilicho Lake Guide

A Complete Tilicho Lake Guide

Balaram Thapa

Tilicho Lake is a spectacular glacial lake in the Annapurna Region of the Nepal Himalayas. It is a trekking as well as a pilgrimage destination. Most trekkers visit this lake as a side trip while trekking along the Annapurna Circuit Route or the Thorung La Pass. Surrounded by tall snow-covered mountains and frozen glaciers, Tilicho is one of the world's most beautiful high-altitude lakes. It was Nepal's highest lake, but after the discovery of Kanjin Sara Lake in Chame, at an elevation of 5002 meters, in 2019, Tilicho slid to the second spot.

Located in the Manang district, Tilicho Lake is a must-visit destination for trekkers walking along the Annapurna Circuit Trail . The lake also has a deep spiritual value. For Hindus, Tilicho is the sacred lake Kag Bhusundi which is mentioned in the Hindu epic Ramayana. Buddhists revere this lake as the Buddhist saint Milarepa is said to have meditated on the banks of Tilicho.

Tilicho Lake Highlights

  • Amazing view of Tilicho Peak, Nilgiri Himal, Annapurna Range, Gangapurna, etc.
  • Experience pristine and raw nature undisturbed by human habitation
  • Fewer trekkers on the trail
  • Covered with snow throughout the year
  • Stunning colors – a turquoise lake surrounded by pure white snow
  • Trek through culturally rich mountain villages to reach the lake

How to reach Tilicho Lake?

To access the trailhead to Tilicho Lake, one has to reach Khangsar, the last village on the Tilicho trail. To get to Khangsar, you can take a jeep ride to Manang or Chame and walk to Khangsar from there. Or you can trek from Bulbule or Dharapani and trek for a couple of days, acclimatizing before hiking to Tilicho Lake.

People these days also fly directly to Hongde Airport in Manang from Pokhara or Kathmandu and start their trek from Manang. But starting directly after flying into Manang can be dangerous as you may suffer from altitude sickness. If your body is not properly acclimatized, there’s a high risk of suffering from AMS.

There's also a rough dirt track to Khangsar, and cyclists and bikers can ride all the way to Khangsar. Some daring cyclists ride all the way to Tilicho Base Camp.

Those who can afford it can use helicopter charters. Helicopter companies offer Tilicho Lake Helicopter Tour from Pokhara or Kathmandu. You can fly directly to the lake, spend some time there and return to the city the same day. Heli tours to Tilicho Lake are quite popular among Hindu pilgrims who cannot trek to Tilicho Lake.

Trek to Tilicho Lake

You start your trek from the village of Khangsar. After walking for 4 to 5 hours, you reach the Tilicho base Camp, where you can stay overnight. There are a few lodges that cater to trekkers walking along this route. After staying overnight at the base camp, you can start your hike early (around 2-3 AM) the next day.

The trail is long and tiring, and the increase in altitude makes walking difficult. It's difficult to breathe at this point, and further, the freezing cold makes taking each step an ordeal. After starting from Base Camp at about an hour, you reach a place known as  Bais Ghumti(22 turnings), where you will have to walk along a winding route up a hill with 22 switchbacks. After covering the switchbacks, you will come to the top of the mountain and walk across a plain field of snow for about 45 minutes. After some steep ascents, you will finally reach Tilicho Lake.

If you want to save time discovering the package, check out our 17-day Annapurna Circuit Trek with a visit to Tilicho Lake .

Difficulty Level

The trek to Tilicho Lake is moderately difficult. Since the lake is situated at an altitude of 4919 meters getting there will be physically strenuous, especially for those not used to walking in high altitudes. Proper acclimatization is very important before setting off on your trek.

The route at some sections is quite dangerous. For about an hour or so, you will have to walk through a landslide-prone area. The trail winds through the sides of barren mountains where loose rocks and debris keep sliding down. You will be walking on paths with exposed sides and with a sheer drop. Most sections of the trail will be covered with snow, so having appropriate shoes is very important.

Accommodation and Food

There are teahouses and lodges available in Manang, Chame, and other points on the trekking route. At Tilicho Base Camp, there are a few lodges where you can stay overnight. The facilities offered at most of the lodges are pretty basic - rooms with beds(mattresses, pillows, and quilts or blankets), attached or shared toilets, etc. The lodge owners take an extra charge for charging electronic gadgets. Wi-fi, if available, also costs extra. There's no central heating at the lodges, and you will have to rely on your warm clothes and blankets to keep you warm through the chilly night.

Food, as in other mountainous regions of Nepal, is quite costly here. As it's difficult to transport items from the cities, the food items sold along the route can be three or four times higher than in the lower towns and cities. However, you can expect freshly cooked and nutritious meals at the teahouses.

As the lake lies at an altitude of 4919 meters, altitude sickness is a big concern. One should acclimatize properly before heading to Tilicho Lake. Drink plenty of warm fluids and water to keep yourself hydrated. The route to the lake is also a bit hazardous. There are landslide-prone areas, and the narrow paths have sheer drops. Having insurance coverage is essential in case of any untoward incident during the trek.

Religious Significance

Tilicho Lake is a sacred site for the Hindus as the lake is supposed to be Kag Bhusundi, the holy lake where sage Kag Bhusundi is said to have narrated the events of the Ramayana to the king of the bird's Garuda. Tilicho is also sacred for the Buddhists as the saint Milarepa meditated by the lakeside.

Other Attractions close to Tlicho Lake

Thorung La Pass, Ice Lake, Muktinath Temple, and Jomsom are some of the attractions close to Tilicho Lake. The cultural experience while trekking along this route is also quite amazing. The Bhotia villages(Chame, Pisang, Manang, etc.) on this route follow Tibetan culture and traditions. Their way of life, attire, and religion are all quite different from those of the middle hills and the cities. The people living in this part of Nepal trace their origin to Tibet, which lies close to this region. They have preserved the old Tibetan way of life, language, and culture.

Is Tilicho the highest lake in the world?

The answer is no. While the internet is flooded with information about Tilicho being the world's highest lake, it’s not true. The world's highest lake is Ojas Del Salado in South America. Situated between Chile and Argentina, Ojas del Salado lies at an altitude of 6390 meters. There are many lakes in South America as well as Tibet that are located higher than Tilicho.

One will be surprised to know that Tilicho is not even the highest lake in Nepal. After the discovery of Kajin Sara Lake in Chame by a group of mountaineers in 2019, Tilicho lost the title of Nepal's highest lake.

Tilicho may not be the world's highest lake, but it undoubtedly is one of the world's most beautiful and gorgeous high-altitude lakes.

If you are trekking along the Annapurna Circuit trail, you should not miss out on the opportunity to visit Tilicho Lake. Surrounded by undisturbed nature and some of the tallest peaks in the world, Tilicho Lake remains one of the natural wonders of the Himalayas.

Marijana Jarža

The Annapurna Circuit for Soul Healing

I went to Nepal for the second time in my life during the Covid confusion. I visited Nepal in March of this year. I went on my journey alone. Rajesh Gurung, my guide from the Nepal Wilderness Company, introduced me to Mr. Himal two years ago. I usually ask for more climbing options as an insatiable, lifelong hiker. Thus, Mr. Himal organized my trip in detail, granting me, even, the trek to Tilicho Lake, Thorong La Pass, and Mardi Himal.

From Kathmandu, we took a local bus to Bessisahar, then took a jeep to Bahundanda, where we stayed overnight and began our walk the next morning. I take this opportunity to oppose some complaints relating to the replacement of some original and partly damaged pathways. In my opinion this is really, the minority issue in comparison with the natural beauty of the river Marsyangdi, gorgeous landscapes, scenes associating with another world, breathtaking views of the Annapurna range, and ancient cities that stretch along the way as you proceed your way upstream of the river;

To name just a few, Tal, Chame, Pisang, Manang, Muktinath have preserved the atmosphere of sacredness and kindness from some forgotten times in history. On the lower destinations, the weather was pleasant; sunny and warm, and snow-covered, on the Tilicho Lake (4.919 m) and Thorong La Pass (5.416), and almost tropical, on the way to Ghorepani and Ghandruk.

He has already crossed Thorong La Pass seven times in his life. He is familiar with all of the Annapurna region, and with the tea-house management staff, so that even during these times of possible reductions in transport and lodging, he can still provide quick and effective solutions. I enjoyed his company and his warm personality. His hidden strength, caution, diligence, and care had made me feel safe. I highly recommend his assistance, the advice of Mr. Himal, and the services provided by the Nepal Wilderness Company.

Best Time to Visit Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek

You must be wondering about the best time to visit Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake. Any time you visit will give you new experiences and memories. These routes are challenging so it depends on which season you would like to do the trek.

Nepal has four seasons i.e. Spring, Monsoon, Autumn, and Winter. Below we have provided you some information about these seasons:

Spring (March to May)

This is the season for a new beginning when you get to witness the valley slowly getting its greenery back. During these months the routes are crowded with trekkers.

The weather and temperature are just favorable with clear blue skies. You get to see flowers blooming throughout the forest trails. And also hear the sounds of birds chirping. If you are a nature lover this time of the year is just perfect.

Autumn (September to November)

This is the peak season of the year when nature gets enhanced beautifully. Along with it, the crowd reaches its maximum limit. During these months the beauty of nature that you witness will be astounding.

Already bloomed flora and fauna and the clear view of snowy peaks you get to see in these trails are just mesmerizing. But the crowded routes can be a disadvantage for this season. Finding proper rooms can be a bit difficult.

Winter (December to February)

These months are the coldest month of the year. The routes are filled with snow and the lakes are frozen during this time of the year.

The weather is warm during the day but as the sun sets it tends to get chilly by the moment. You should carry warm clothes for this season.

If you can handle cold this season is perfect for you. The mountain peaks covered with snow look quite remarkable.

Monsoon (June to August)

This season is when heavy downpours make the routes challenging in the lower region. During these months, the paths are slippery and muddy, also you will see leeches along the way.

There are high chances of landslides and flood during this time. Also, the raincloud blurs out the vision of Mountain peaks. But you get to see new species of Flora and Fauna due to continuous rainfall. These routes are filled with the researcher during the Monsoon season.

If you are thinking of trekking during these months then you should carry raincoat and boots along with you.

Most Beautiful Metro Stations in Moscow

Most Beautiful Metro Stations in Moscow

Visiting Moscow? Get yourself a metro card and explore Moscow’s beautiful metro stations. Moscow’s world-famous metro system is efficient and a great way to get from A to B. But there is more to it; Soviet mosaic decorations, exuberant halls with chandeliers, colourful paintings and immense statues. Moscow’s metro is an attraction itself, so take half a day and dive into Moscow’s underground!

The best thing to do is to get on the brown circle (number 5) line since the most beautiful metro stations are situated on this line. The only exception is the metro stop Mayakovskaya one the green line (number 2). My suggestion is to get a map, mark these metro stops on there and hop on the metro. It helps to get an English > Russian map to better understand the names of the stops. At some of the metro stops, the microphone voice speaks Russian and English so it’s not difficult at all.

Another thing we found out, is that it’s worth taking the escalator and explore the other corridors to discover how beautiful the full station is.

Quick hotel suggestion for Moscow is the amazing Brick Design Hotel .

These are my favourite metro stations in Moscow, in order of my personal preference:

1. Mayakovskaya Station

The metro station of Mayakovskaya looks like a ballroom! Wide arches, huge domes with lamps and mosaic works make your exit of the metro overwhelming. Look up and you will see the many colourful mosaics with typical Soviet pictures. Mayakovskaya is my personal favourite and is the only stop not on the brown line but on the green line.

tilicho lake trek distance

2. Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya metro station is famous for its yellow ceiling. An average museum is nothing compared to this stop. Splendour all over the place, black and gold, mosaic – again – and enormous chandeliers that made my lamp at home look like a toy.

3. Novoslobodskaya Station

The pillars in the main hall of Novoslobodskaya metro station have the most colourful stained glass decorations. The golden arches and the golden mosaic with a naked lady holding a baby in front of the Soviet hammer and sickle, make the drama complete.

4. Prospect Mira Station

The beautiful chandeliers and the lines in the ceiling, make Prospekt Mira an architectural masterpiece.

5. Belorusskaya Station

Prestigious arches, octagonal shapes of Socialistic Soviet Republic mosaics. The eyecatcher of Belorusskaya metro station, however, is the enormous statue of three men with long coats, holding guns and a flag.

tilicho lake trek distance

6. Kiyevskaya Station

The metro station of Kiyevskaya is a bit more romantic than Belorusskaya and Prospect Mira. Beautiful paintings with classical decorations.

7. Taganskaya Station

At the main hall Taganskaya metro station you will find triangle light blue and white decorations that are an ode to various Russians that – I assume – are important for Russian history and victory. There is no need to explore others halls of Taganskaya, this is it.

tilicho lake trek distance

8. Paveletskaya Station

Another and most definitely the less beautiful outrageous huge golden mosaic covers one of the walls of Paveletskaya. I would recommend taking the escalator to the exit upstairs to admire the turquoise dome and a painting of the St Basil’s Cathedral in a wooden frame.

Travelling with Moscow’s metro is inexpensive. You can have a lot of joy for just a few Rubbles.

  • 1 single journey: RMB 50 – € 0,70

It’s absolutely beautiful! Moscow is a great city trip destination and really surprised me in many ways.

My partner and I did a self guided Moscow Metro tour when we were there 2 years ago. So many breathtaking platforms…I highly recommend it! Most of my favorites were along the Brown 5 line, as well. I also loved Mayakovskaya, Arbatskaya, Aleksandrovski Sad and Ploshchad Revolyutsii. We’re heading back in a few weeks and plan to do Metro Tour-Part 2. We hope to see the #5 stations we missed before, as well as explore some of the Dark Blue #3 (Park Pobedy and Slavyansky Bul’var, for sure), Yellow #8 and Olive #10 platforms.

That’s exciting Julia! Curious to see your Metro Tour-Part 2 experience and the stations you discovered.
