📍 Ubicación : Para situar esta maravilla de la naturaleza, el Cañón del Sumidero se encuentra en un parque natural con su mismo nombre en el estado de Chiapas (al sur de México), entre las ciudades de Tuxtla Gutiérrez y Chiapa de Corzo .

¿Dónde alojarse para visitar el Cañón del Sumidero?

La ciudad más cercana es Tuxtla Gutiérrez (capital del estado de Chiapas) situada a 13 km del Cañón del Sumidero. Es muy turística y en ella tienes un montón de lugares donde alojarte.

Puedes hacerlo totalmente por tu cuenta si tienes vehículo propio, utilizar el transporte público, o como nosotros,  hacer un tour al Cañón del Sumidero, algo que consideramos mucho más fácil y cómodo, además de ir con un guía que hace que aprendas y disfrutes más del lugar.

◾ Si vas al Cañón del Sumidero por libre , tendrás que contratar el recorrido en barca al llegar, y si quieres visitar los miradores, ir a la caseta de control para comprar la entrada.

¿Qué llevar en la mochila para hacer la excursión por el Cañón del Sumidero?

✎ Básicamente algo para comer , porque no se para en ningún lugar hasta que no llegas a Chiapa de Corzo, y especialmente agua. De todas formas vas a poder comprar snacks y bebidas en las barca-tiendas que te encuentras en el trayecto por el río o en el restaurante del embarcadero. Pero no hay mucho más.

Nosotros comimos algo en uno de los cientos de puestos callejeros que hay en Chiapa del Corzo, pero una vez allí también tienes la opción de entrar en algún restaurante.

En cuanto al tipo de ropa y calzado que llevar, no hace falta nada especial. Los miradores están asfaltados y te dejan a unos metros de los miradores. Eso sí, IMPORTANTE: crema solar, anti mosquitos y gafas de sol.

✎ Imprescindible también un seguro de viaje para imprevistos. Nosotros siempre llevamos el de IATI . Lo hemos tenido que usar en varias ocasiones y por distintos motivos viajando por todo el mundo, en todos los casos la cobertura y su respuesta ha sido perfecta. Qué ver en el Cañón del Sumidero

Este estrecho cañón rodeado de bosques tropicales es Patrimonio de la Humanidad, y se ha convertido en uno de los lugares más visitados de México.

Se trata de un paisaje de cañones alucinantes a través del río Grijalva en un Área Natural Protegida . Su origen está en una falla geológica que se formó hace millones de años, por la que hoy transcurre el río entre paredes verticales de entre 200 y 1000 metros de altura, y un cauce con una profundidad de 250 metros.

Cómo es el tour al Cañón del Sumidero

Todos los tours hacen parada en el pueblo colonial de Chiapa de Corzo , desde donde salen los recorridos en barco por el cañón.

Después, dependiendo del tour que elijas, harás un paseo en lancha por el río Grijalva , con un guía local que te explica el origen y las curiosidades de lo que vas viendo

Y si decides hacer el tour completo , te llevan a conocer algunos de los miradores más espectaculares de la zona al terminar el paseo en barca. Ésta es la opción que nosotros elegimos y que te recomendamos, para poder disfrutar al máximo de los paisajes.

Paseo en lancha por el Cañón del Sumidero recorriendo el río Grijalva

El río Grijalva o río Mezcalapa, nace en Guatemala, atraviesa 4 presas y desemboca en el Golfo de México. ¿Casi nada, eh? A  su paso por el Parque Nacional, se puede navegar perfectamente , lo cual se ha convertido en la actividad principal de cualquier tour al Cañón del Sumidero.

El tour en barca por el río Grijalva dura aproximadamente 2 horas recorriendo el Cañón del Sumidero, que pasa de 200 a 1000 metros de profundidad.

Durante el recorrido, además de paisajes espectaculares, se ven un montón de aves (en el Parque Nacional del Sumidero hay más de 300 especies como garcetas, cormoranes o buitres), y si tienes suerte: monos araña (hoy en peligro de extinción) o cocodrilos.

💡 Además se hace parada en lugares de los más curiosos:

La Cueva de Colores . El Santuario de la Virgen morena de Guadalupe. Los colores naturales que se pueden ver en la cueva son producidos por los óxidos de las rocas.

El Árbol de Navidad . Una pared vertical por la que cae una cascada de agua, que el paso del tiempo ha formado una figura con musgo y vegetación, que parece un abeto gigante visto desde abajo.

La última parada se hace en la Presa Manuel Moreno Torres, una de las 10 más altas del mundo, que aún hoy está en activo generando energía.

👎 Lo peor del tour por el Cañón del Sumidero es ver el río lleno de basura.  Según nos dijeron entra por toneladas de los pueblos de la ribera, pero que en el fondo depende de todos también en nuestra visita. Una verdadera pena el estado en que se encuentra y algo a mejorar en mayúsculas.

Miradores del Cañón del Sumidero

Con el tour completo, te llevan a conocer algunos de los miradores más espectaculares.

✎ Si vas a hacerlo por tu cuenta, tendrás que pagar en función de los miradores que visites.

Horario: Los miradores están abiertos de 8 de la mañana a 5 de la tarde (para deportistas de 6 a 18:00 horas). Los martes cierran por limpieza.

⭐ En total son 5 los miradores del Cañón del Sumidero:

La Ceiba . El primero de los miradores del recorrido terrestre. Desde este punto alcanzas a ver Chiapa del Corzo, pero todavía no se ve el río entre cañones.

Mirador La Coyota . Es el segundo del recorrido terrestre. En éste, la vista resulta impresionante y puedes ver las proporciones de las inmensas paredes del cañón.

El Roblar . Para llegar hasta él tienes que caminar por un largo sendero empedrado entre árboles y arbustos.

Mirador El Tepehuaje . El cuarto del recorrido terrestre. Situado en la parte más alta del cañón (1000 metros de altura), con unas vistas espectaculares. Además desde él podrás ver gran cantidad de aves.

Mirador de Los Chiapa . Es el quinto y último del recorrido. Se encuentra también a 1000 metros de altura y es el más impresionante, porque se ve el río Grijalva en curva. Además este mirador tiene baños, un parque infantil y una tienda.

Su nombre, además tiene leyenda. Los Chiapa fueron el grupo étnico que se asentó en los márgenes del río. Resistieron la conquista de los españoles y cuenta su leyenda que ante la derrota inminente, prefirieron tirarse desde el cañón antes que verse sometidos.

Chiapa de Corzo

De vuelta a San Cristóbal de las Casas, se hace una parada para visitar Chiapa del Corzo (de 1 hora en el tour al Cañón del Sumidero que hicimos nosotros).

Fundado por los españoles durante el siglo XVI, es uno de los pueblos mágicos de México. De estilo colonial y muy pintoresco, hoy también bastante turístico.

En la parte más céntrica del pueblo tienen un mercado situado en el interior de los soportales de los edificios. Además de souvenirs, hay puestos con gran variedad de dulces de la zona. Si eres de es@s a los que nunca les amarga un dulce (como dicen las abuelas) y te gusta probar cosas diferentes, aquí la vas a gozar, créenos.

✎ Una recomendación : el «Pozol de cacao». Es una bebida fría espesa no alcohólica, hecha con cacao, azúcar, masa de maíz y agua.

Can I go to Sumiderro independently?

Yes. But it costs the same as joining a tour , so I wouldn’t recommend it.

There are  colectivos  (shared taxi vans) operating several times a day from Tuxtla Gutierrez to Chiapa de Corzo. The  ride takes about 40 minutes, and there are several stops along the way to either pick up or drop off people.

The driver collects payment once you’ve arrived and you can let him know you want to get off at the  parque principal  or the main square in Chiapa de Corzo.

Chances are that once you arrive to the main square, tour vendors will spot you out and lead you right to the boat tours. 

There are a handful of different boarding docks along the canyon river but two of the main ones are a short walk from the town square of Chiapa de Corzo.

The Sumidero Canyon is a spectacular natural wonder located in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas , just north of the state's capital city, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, and close to the charming town of Chiapa de Corzo. Declared a national park in 1980, the Cañón de Sumidero has high vertical walls of up to 2,600 feet (800 meters) in some places and lots of natural life to admire and enjoy. You can view the canyon from one of the look-out points or take a boat ride and see the canyon and its abundant vegetation and wildlife up close.

The canyon is open to visitors all year long, so you can visit during any season. Chiapas' climate is highly variable due to the mountainous terrain and varying elevations, so it's a good idea to dress in layers. The weather is generally warmest in April and May and coolest in December and January, with the rainy season taking place between May and September. However, rain is possible at any time of year in this tropical climate zone .

The most popular ways of enjoying the national park are by getting a birds-eye view of the canyon from the lookout points above and taking a boat trip to traverse the canyon at water level. You can do both activities in a day and it's definitely the best way to see the canyon. Visitors to the national park may also participate in adventure activities such as hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, and rappelling, but typically only with a guided tour. Exploring the park outside of the viewpoints can only be done with a tour group or by requesting permission from the government.

The Chicoasén hydroelectric dam, one of the largest Mexican hydraulic engineering works, has a 20-mile-long reservoir that encompasses the entire canyon.

There are six miradores (lookout points) accessible by land at different elevations and locations along the canyon so that you can enjoy various views. These lookout points are named La Ceiba, La Coyota, El Roblar, Tepehuaje, Los Chiapas, and Manos. Each of the lookout points has its own charm and offers different perspectives from which to appreciate the canyon. Besides seeing the canyon from above, you can also take a boat tour that runs the length of the canyon, covering some 20 miles from the Belisario Domínguez Bridge to the hydroelectric dam and back again, for a total of 40 miles. This boat tour takes about two hours and gives you a chance to enjoy the canyon's impressive natural beauty, see interesting geological formations, and spot some of the local wildlife.

There are four different docks near the town of Chiapa de Corzo with boat companies who offer basically the same service, charging between 200 and 300 pesos (between $10-15) per person for a two-hour boat tour. The sun can be powerful out on the water, although with the breeze, you may not feel it until afterward, so be sure to take sunscreen and a hat (preferably one with a string to hold it on during the boat ride), and drinking water. Also, be prepared for some splashing and protect your phone or other electronics you may have with you.

There are opportunities for practicing several different adventure activities in the canyon through guided tours. If you’re interested in hiking, Keteka Tours offers a full-day excursion hiking adventure. If you would like to do some mountain biking in the area, Enbiciando provides rentals, repairs, and tours. Kayaking excursions are offered by the tour group and hotel Balam Posada . For rock climbing within the canyon, get in touch with Vertigo Rock Climbing .

It’s best to go with a tour company as they know the lay of the land and provide the necessary permissions and equipment. If you would like to pursue any of these activities independently—even hiking—you’re required to get permission from the CONANP government agency , which has an office in Tuxtla Gutiérrez. You'll need to fill out some forms, pay a fee, and have a detailed plan of what you plan to do and why you're entering.

You can't camp in the park, but Tuxtla Guiterrez—the capital of the province of Chiapas—is located at the border of the national park and is a city with plenty of lodging options. However, most boat tours depart further down the river from the small town of Chiapa de Corzo, making it a convenient location for spending the night. About an hour away is the colonial town of San Cristobal, which is considered one of Mexico's " pueblo mágicos " and is a worthwhile place to spend a few nights.

• Chiapas Hotel Express : Even though this three-star hotel in the city of Tuxtla is outside of the city center, it's one of the closest options to the entrance of the national park. The entrance gates are just 10 minutes away by car and the best vista points are just a bit further.
• Casa Grande Hotel : There are only five rooms in this hotel located inside a historic colonial home in Chiapa de Corzo, so personalized attention is all but guaranteed. Apart from the endearing decor and cozy guestrooms, the hotel is also just a few blocks away from the dock where the boat tours depart for Sumidero Canyon.
• Casa Santa Lucia : If you're staying in a pueblo as magical as San Cristobal, then you'll need a hotel that's just as spellbinding, like Casa Santa Lucia. This 18th-century building is a registered national historic place, but the inside has been remodeled to offer all the amenities of a boutique hotel without losing its Old World charm.

Getting to the park depends on if you're entering by land or by water. If you're taking a car or a bus into the park, you'll likely begin in Tuxtla, which is the biggest city in Chiapas and also home to the area's main airport. The park entrance is about 4 miles northeast of the city center; you can visit in a private vehicle or take a tour offered by tour companies in Tuxtla, Chiapa de Corzo, or San Cristóbal de las Casas. If you're taking a boat tour of the canyon, most of them leave from the town of Chiapa de Corzo to the south of Tuxtla.

Visitors who are staying in San Cristobal can easily get to Tuxtla via frequent buses between the two cities or colectivos , which are like shared taxis for people heading the same direction.

• There is a small admission fee—less than two dollars—to enter the national park, which is separate from the cost of taking a tour. You will be given a bracelet to prove you have paid the admission fee for the park and it will allow you admission to the lookout points after entering the park on a boat tour.

Sumidero Canyon is one of the best places I’ve visited in inland Mexico. This canyon is one of the most beautiful and stunning sights in the Chiapas region of Mexico.

If you’re visiting Chiapas, in Mexico’s south, you’ll probably be visiting San Cristóbal de las Casas. This is an incredibly beautiful and charming city — a must in the region. And it does make a popular itinerary stopover in between Palenque, Oaxaca, and the Guatemalan destinations of Quetzaltenango (Xela) or Lake Atitlan.

But Chiapas is more than just cities — in fact, if you’re traveling to Mexico and only visiting cities and beaches, you’re seriously missing out. In a simple day trip from San Cristóbal that provides everything , you can see one of the great natural wonders of southern Mexico — from several different angles.

I don’t think Mexico gets enough credit for its natural scenery. Sure, its Caribbean beaches get a lot of publicity, but inland Mexico is full of absolutely gorgeous destinations that most international tourists haven’t heard about. Sumidero Canyon is one of these natural wonders. Only four of us were foreigners; the rest were Mexican tourists.

I highly recommend visiting Sumidero Canyon if you make it to Chiapas. It’s one of the best ways to explore the natural beauty close to San Cristóbal. Here is everything you need to know to have a great time.

Sumidero Canyon

Sumidero Canyon, or Cañon del Sumidero, is part of Parque Nacional Cañon del Sumidero, a national park covering 50,000 acres. Even so, the canyon is the superstar. It’s one of the most visited places in Chiapas and the canyon is even on the Chiapas flag!

Sumidero Canyon is about 35 million years old, around the same age as the Grand Canyon, and was formed by the Grijalva River carving through the landscape. Unlike the Grand Canyon, Sumidero Canyon is much smaller at about 8.1 miles long (13 km). The tallest edges of the canyon are about one kilometer high (1.6 miles).

The Chicoasén Dam is a hydroelectric dam located at the northern end of the Grijalva River, an important resource for generating power in the region.

But if you come to see the canyon — and you really should — it’s more than marveling at its beauty. This is an incredibly fun place to visit on a tour from San Cristóbal de las Casas .

Sumidero Canyon Tour

There are lots of Sumidero Canyon tours from San Cristóbal de las Casas, but not all of them are equal. Choose the wrong tour and you could accidentally book yourself onto a trip that omits the miradores or even the boat trip itself, which has sadly happened to some of my friends.

You want to choose a tour that at minimum includes the boat trip, the miradores, and the town of Chiapa de Corzo. Some tours include lunch; most will stop at a restaurant where you can get a pretty cheap meal.

This is the Sumidero Canyon tour that includes everything. You’ll get transportation from San Cristóbal de las Casas, including pickup from your hotel; a two-hour boat ride in the canyon; a visit to the town of Chiapa de Corzo; and visits to five different miradores (viewpoints).

How far is Sumidero Canyon from San Cristobál de las Casas? It’s about one hour away by car. You may be wondering if it’s better to book a tour from Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the major city next door to the canyon (and home to the nearest airport), but tours from here are usually more expensive.

San Cristóbal may be further away, but trips from here are cheaper because it’s a tourist town with lots of tour companies in competition with each other. Tuxtla Gutierrez doesn’t have a lot of tourism value; most visitors to Chiapas skip the city entirely.

Sumidero Canyon Boat Trip

Our Sumidero Canyon tour began with a 9:00 pickup at our hotel in San Cristóbal de las Casas, we were ushered into an air conditioned van. After picking up other tour participants, we headed out on the highway to Sumidero Canyon, the sky bright blue over rippling brown mountains.

The tour begins at the base of the canyon, where you everyone puts on life jackets and Sumidero Canyon National Park wristbands and load up into a bright yellow boat, two seats on each side. You’ll be packed in until you’re cozy. And you better be — this is a two-hour boat ride on the Rio Grijalva.

First up: the boat tour is entirely in Spanish. But don’t worry — there isn’t a ton of hardcore information; it’s more “Look at that cool thing!” than anything else. Your tour guide will let you know where to look.

And with that, we began to speed down the river, briefly holding up our wristband-clad arms as we passed the security guard.

This photo really gives you an idea of just how big the canyon is! A gorgeous natural wonder with wavy rock formations curving upward to the sky.

“This feels bigger than Matka Canyon in Macedonia,” my boyfriend Charlie told me.

“This feels bigger than Tara Canyon in Montenegro,” I replied.

For the record, he was right and I was wrong. Tara Canyon dwarfs the two others.

The views reminded me of my fjords cruise in Norway . High cliffs springing up on either side of the river, smashing straight down into the river.

But unlike Norway, there was nothing around — no villages, no docks. Just canyon walls and a calm river.

Right off the bat, we had our first wildlife sighting. Something black was swinging back and forth from tree to tree — yes, it was a spider monkey. IN MEXICO. I was shocked — I had no idea there were monkeys in Mexico!

What a cute little guy! Well…he was cute at first.

Our boat driver guided our boat right underneath the tree where he was swinging. And I was in the first row of the boat, so I was literally right underneath the monkey, and I started FREAKING OUT. What if he fell on me?! What if he PEED on me?! Can you get rabies from spider monkeys?

I’ve done a few safaris in Africa and none of my safari guides would dare going that close to an animal, let alone right underneath a monkey. This seemed really antagonistic.

Finally, we pulled back, I ceased having a heart attack, and the monkey’s companion swung out to join him.

We watched the monkeys swing back and forth.

Best family portrait ever. Though I’m still terrified of monkeys. Even though they’re an endangered species.

The next sighting was one of Sumidero Canyon’s famous caves — La Cueva de Colores (the Cave of Colors). This cave is streaked with shades of pink from rich magnesium and potassium deposits.

Inside is a shrine to the Virgin of Guadalupe that locals maintain with burning candles and flower offerings.

Next up, the guide drove our boat to a stone crocodile statue. Ho hum.

Then he drove us to another crocodile statue, pictured above.

Then the statue blinked.

YEP, THIS ONE WAS A REAL CROCODILE.

(Also, yes — the trash in the canyon is truly disheartening. I wish people here took better care of their environment.)

We spotted another crocodile on the way back, and there was no denying this one was real — he snarled and slithered and dove into the water.

But the highlight of the boat trip was just enjoying the immense beauty of the canyon. I love when nature makes you feel humble.

One thing you should know is that the driver asks for tips while you’re still offshore — it feels a bit like you’re being held hostage, though I respect the hustle. The driver will come up the aisle taking tips from everyone.

Sumidero Canyon Miradores

There are five miradores, or viewpoints, of the canyon throughout Sumidero National Park. These are great places to take in stunning views of the steep cliffs of the canyon, the green river snaking through them.

After our tour finished the boat ride on the river, we visited four out of the five miradores around the park.

How much time do you need at these lookout points? Not much. I was fine with just a few minutes at each stop, though Los Chiapa Mirador has a restaurant if you’re starving. We wolfed down two quesadillas for 60 pesos ($3).

The miradoras are a great place for posed photos, but keep in mind that the facilities are very basic. Most didn’t have bathrooms. Los Chiapa Mirador had a bathroom — but none of the toilets were flushing and there was no running water nor soap.

Chiapa de Corzo

On the next part of our Sumidero Canyon tour , we visited Chiapa de Corzo — a beautiful town near Sumidero Canyon, and one of Mexico’s Pueblos Mágicos . Pueblos Mágicos are smaller towns throughout Mexico that Mexico Tourism has highlighted for their “magical” cultural value, whether it’s for natural beauty or unique traditions.

If you happen to be near a Pueblo Mágico, you should go! I’ve enjoyed the ones I’ve visited so far, like Izamal in the Yucatán, Sayulita in Nayarit, and Bacalar in Quintana Roo. And San Cristóbal is technically a Pueblo Mágico as well.

We arrived in Chiapa de Corzo as the final part of our tour. Most tours will give you around 45 minutes to an hour to explore the town. It’s a small place so you can see quite a bit of it in that amount of time.

Chiapa de Corzo is another launching point for tour boats heading to Sumidero Canyon.

While we were in Chiapa de Corzo, there was actually a children’s carnival taking place! All the kids were in costumes, mostly Hawaiian and Caribbean themed outfits, and I burst out laughing at one little rotund boy in a bright orange striped jumpsuit with ruffly sleeves, looking like he was about to lead a Cuban band.

Sumidero Canyon Tips

Book your ticket in advance. This tour sells out during busy times, especially Easter and Holy Week.

Prepare for hot weather, even if San Cristóbal is cool. San Cristóbal is at a higher elevation and tends to be cooler than the surrounding area; it’s much hotter and sunnier in the canyon. Wear layers and peel them off.

Bring sunscreen and sun protection. If you’re spending extended time in Mexico, I recommend packing biodegradable sunscreen , which is essential for protecting delicate areas like cenotes , coral reefs, and stromatolite-rich waters like my beloved Laguna de Bacalar .

You’ll also want to wear a hat, but be careful — the boat goes REALLY fast and a hat can easily blow off your head. I nearly lost my hat — the ponytail through the back of the cap saved it — and my boyfriend lost his twice. (Yep, after the second loss, the hats stayed off for the rest of the boat ride. Ha!)

Bring coins for the bathrooms. The bathrooms around the canyon cost 5 pesos to use, which is standard for most places in Mexico. The one by Los Chiapa Mirador is free.

Leave your wristband on all day. This isn’t just for getting on the boat tour, this is for the whole park. When you’re on the boat trip, you’ll pass a checkpoint and the man will yell for everyone to hold up their arms to show the wristbands. When you go back into the national park to the miradores, the staff will check the wristbands again.

Don’t buy anything from children. Chiapa de Corzo has a ton of souvenir sellers, and sadly, some of those sellers are children. Buying from children rewards a system that keeps them out of school and forces them to grow up too quickly. If you want to buy something, buy from an adult.

There is mostly no phone signal on the highway between San Cristóbal de las Casas and Sumidero Canyon. Bring something to read, or just stare out the window — the views are spectacular! (Get a seat on the left side of the car on the way to Sumidero Canyon and on the right on the way back.)

Expect the tour to take longer than the tour provider claims. We were told that we would be back by 4:30 PM. In reality, we weren’t back until 6:15 PM. This isn’t unusual in laid-back Latin America, but keep it in mind if you have plans for later.

Best Time to Visit Sumidero Canyon

Sumidero Canyon is part of Chiapas state in Mexico, and the best time to visit Chiapas is between November and May. This is the dry season, you’ll have daily sunshine, and temperatures will be at their most pleasant.

Things can be a bit iffier if you visit between June and October, which is the rainy season.

Keep in mind that Sumidero Canyon and San Cristóbal de las Casas are just an hour apart, but have totally different climates. San Cristóbal is at a higher elevation and is several degrees cooler. Bring layers to accommodate both climates.

Where to Stay in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Mexico

San Cristóbal de las Casas is a lovely city. It’s so colorful and welcoming, and while there are a few attractions, this is more of a city where you stroll soak up how it feels, rather than checking off things to do. It’s a nice place to catch your breath if you’ve been speeding through Mexico or Guatemala.

San Cristóbal is also a very affordable city. You can get a lot of value for money here, and it’s worth spending a few days to soak it all up.

That being said, it can get very cold here at night (my Uniqlo Ultra Light Down Jacket was the perfect jacket to have here), and most properties are not insulated well. It can also be noisy in San Cristóbal at night (as it is in virtually every place in Mexico), so I recommend bringing earplugs .

Finally, know that a lot of the “double beds” are actually not queens but tiny full-sized beds, so look carefully at the photos before you book. People in Chiapas tend to be on the short side, many under 5 feet, so “double” beds don’t have to be as big.

I recommend staying within five blocks of the zócalo , or main square, which will have you walking distance from most places of interest in the city.

I stayed at Pepe Pancho , a budget guesthouse in the center of town. While on the simple side, the king rooms here are a comfortable budget option. If you’re looking for a budget place to stay, this is a very good option, as long as you stay in a king room.

If you stay here, GET A KING ROOM. We originally stayed in one of the regular rooms and the bed was tiny and awful. For the equivalent of $12 more per night, the king room had a huge bed with giant cushy pillows, a big thick comforter, and a view of the rooftops and mountains.

If you’re looking for a high-end stay, check out Casa Lum . This is a gorgeous luxury hotel, right in the city center, that is colorful and artistic and brings so much of the Chiapas aesthetic indoors creatively.

If you want something mid-range, check out Sombra del Agua . While prices are low, this feels more like a luxury hotel, down to its gorgeous outdoor courtyard and immaculately designed rooms, some with fireplaces.

Visiting the Sumidero Canyon Chiapas: Your 2024 Insider’s Guide

Visiting the Sumidero Canyon (Cañón del Sumidero)  is a highlight of most people’s trip to Chiapas. Next to visiting San Cristobal de Las Casas and the archeological site at Palenque, it is one of the most popular things to do in this region.

The Sumidero Canyon Chiapas 

This dramatic canyon occupies an area close to the state capital of Tuxtla Gutierrez. Some of its towering walls started forming more than 70 million years ago. 

This makes the United States Grand Canyon (which started forming around 4 or 5 million years ago), a baby canyon in comparison! However, once upon a time, this part of Chiapas consisted of nothing more than a shallow sea. It wasn’t until 15 million years ago that waters from the Rio Grijalva started running northwards through the canyon. Since then, the canyon has existed in its current form. The canyon’s walls reach as much as 1km in height, and it extends across a length of 13km. 

Today, the Sumidero Canyon is one of the most stunning natural attractions in Mexico. It was recognized as a national park in 1980 and various species of birds, mammals and fish live in this region, many of which are native to this part of Mexico. 

If you are renting a car in Mexico , you can travel to Sumidero Canyon independently. However, the most popular way to visit is to do so by participating in a guided tour. All of the information that you may need for planning your Chiapas adventure is discussed in this guide. 

Visiting Sumidero Canyon 

There are two main ways that you can experience the Sumidero Canyon. You can opt to take a boat tour or you can opt to explore the canyon on foot and hike up to one of the lookout points.

The best way to visit the canyon is to do both! A number of reputable local tour companies offer excursions to the canyon that include a pick-up and drop-off at your hotel. Most depart from either San Cristobal de las Casas or from Tuxtla Gutierrez and they usually include a brief visit to the charming Pueblo Magico of Chiapa de Corzo too. Exploring with a guide is great because it enables you to obtain more information, history, and context to the things that you see. It also takes a lot of the stress out of planning your trip. This way you don’t have to worry about public transport schedules or how you are going to get from A to B.  Better still? Exploring with a Chiapas local means that you have an expert on hand to ask for recommendations for your trip. Someone that knows the region really well can advise you on the best places to visit in Chiapas , the best restaurants, what to do in each town, etc.  

Get to the Sumidero Canyon from Chiapa de Corzo

If you are already staying in Chiapa de Corzo, it is easy to get to the embarkation point for Sumidero Canyon boat tours from here. This lovely little town dates back to 1528, making it one of the oldest towns in the Americas. It is often overlooked from most people’s Chiapas itineraries but it is very deserved a day or two’s exploration. Colectivos (shared minivans) depart from the Zocalo square near La Pila fountain at frequent intervals throughout the day. It is tricky to find schedule information online (welcome to Mexico!) and timetables can change at a moment’s notice. Ask around in town/at your hotel for the precise departure times the day before you plan on traveling. These colectivos take you to the Cahuare Pier on the outskirts of town from where you can organize a boat through the canyon. A ticket costs only 13 pesos each way. Alternatively, you will easily be able to organize a cab from the center of Chiapa de Corzo to  Cahuare Pier. This should only really cost you a few pesos, although it is a good idea to have your hotel/Airbnb organize the cab for you. Cab drivers are often a law unto themselves the world over and in Chiapas they are no different! If you get into a random cab on the street, they are likely to assume that as a tourist you do not know the correct going rate of things and overcharge you. Hotels typically have a number of trusted cab drivers that they can refer you to.   

Get to the Sumidero Canyon from San Cristobal de las Casas 

If you are traveling to the Sumidero Canyon from San Cristobal de las Casas, your best option is to take an organized tour. There is no direct bus that runs from San Cristobal to the Cahuare Pier or to Chiapa de Corzo so traveling here by public transport is a little tricky. If you want to travel independently, you can take the San Cristobal to Tuxtla Gutierrez bus. Although there is no official stop, if you let the bus driver know that you want to go to Chiapa de Corzo for the Sumidero Canyon, they should drop you off at the side of the road on the outskirts of town. From there, you can get a colectivo into town or to the pier. The other option is to take the bus all the way to Tuxtla Gutierrez and then organize a tour from there. However, Tuxtla Gutierrez isn’t a particularly beautiful or interesting city so you might as well just take a tour from San Cristobal! Buses between San Cristobal de las Casas and Tuxtla Gutierrez run at frequent intervals throughout the day. ADO and OCC are the two bus companies that operate on this route and both are reliable. The first bus departs from San Cristobal at 06.30 am and the last one departs at 22.15 pm. You can purchase tickets online in advance via ADO or Busbud, or in person at the ticket office. You can also take a taxi from San Cristobal de las Casas to Chiapa de Corzo. This is likely to cost around 750 pesos ($38) and the journey should take just over an hour.

A number of reputable Sumidero Canyon tours that depart from San Cristobal de las Casas are detailed below for your consideration. It is advisable to reserve your place online in advance to avoid disappointment.

Get to the Sumidero Canyon from Tuxtla Gutierrez

The Ángel Albino Corzo international airport near Tuxtla Gutierrez is the closest airport to the Sumidero Canyon. Several flights per day run between other Mexican cities and Tuxtla Gutierrez – including Mexico City , Cancun, and Merida. 

If you are heading straight to the Sumidero Canyon from Tuxtla Gutierrez international airport, you can take an airport cab directly to the canyon. This will cost you approximately 400 pesos one way (circa $20). If you are in Tuxtla Gutirrez city center, you can either book a place on an organized tour that picks you up from a hotel in the area, or you can take a cab. If you take a cab, you can expect to pay around 400-450 pesos ($20-23).

Organizing Sumidero Canyon boat trips independently 

If you prefer not to participate in an organized tour and you want to explore the canyon independently, you can pay for your entrance to the park and for your boat tour on arrival. Do keep in mind, however, that the costs of visiting independently are pretty much the same as the cost of visiting on a tour. When you arrive at Sumidero Canyon, you need to pay an entrance fee of 36 pesos per person to enter the national park and another fee of 270 pesos for the boat ride. The boats seat 20 people and you will need to wait for it to be full before you can set off. 

You shouldn’t have to wait long though. There are usually plenty of people waiting to board the boats, particularly at weekends. Life jackets are provided for all passengers and the boat tour takes approximately 2 hours.

From the Cahuare pier, your boat ride will take you on a slow and scenic journey toward the Chicoasén dam.

Where is the Sumidero Canyon?

The Sumidero Canyon is located in the southern Mexico state of Chiapas, close to the Guatemala border. It is just north of the town of Chiapa de Corzo. Crocodiles, ocelots, spider monkeys, iguanas, and raccoons call the canyon home. The area is also famous for its diverse variety of colorful butterflies. Your guide will make small detours here and there to allow you to observe the local wildlife in its natural habitat (while maintaining a respectful distance). Along the route, you will pass by several gorgeous waterfalls. Arguably the most stunning of the group is one known as the Christmas tree falls. Similarly, keep your eyes open for the Cave of Colors. This is a natural chapel with pink tones on the walls due to the various minerals present in the rocks. A Virgin of Guadalupe has been placed within and on the 12th of December each year, hundreds of people from across Chiapas board boats and come on a pilgrimage to pay their respects at the shrine.  After finishing up your boat tour, be sure to hike up to one of the five miradors (viewpoints) to enjoy panoramas over the canyon. The Los Chiapa viewpoint is also home to a restaurant where you can indulge in traditional Chiapescan cuisine while overlooking the canyon. 

Are there crocodiles in Chiapas Mexico?

Several species of crocodiles can be found across Mexico, including in the state of Chiapas. The American crocodile is the name of the species that live in the Sumidero Canyon. 

What to wear for visiting the Sumidero Canyon

It can get very hot in and around the Sumidero Canyon and you can expect temperatures here that range between 82 and 96 degrees Fahrenheit depending on the time of year that you visit. There is no shade or escape from the sun when you are out on a boat so be sure to come prepared with a hat, some sunglasses, and plenty of sunscreen. Light, breathable clothes are a must. It is also worth noting that Chiapas is a mountainous state and the climate conditions vary significantly depending on the altitude of the specific place that you visit. San Cristobal is nestled in the mountains and sees substantially cooler temperatures than towns and cities that are located at lower altitudes. Comitan de Dominguez , Tuxtla Gutierrez, Palenque and Chiapa de Corzo are all much hotter. You essentially need to pack for different seasons to travel to different parts of Chiapas!

Rain is a real possibility at any time of year here, but especially during the rainy season (late May to October). If you are traveling during this time, it is a good idea to also pack a light rain mac, just in case. 

Amenities in and around the Sumidero Canyon

There are bathrooms at the entrance to the National Park. You will also pull up to a “floating bodega” (marketplace on a boat) during your Sumidero Canyon tour. You can buy all manner of Mexican drinks , snacks and light bites here that you would be able to buy at a convenience store. Still, it is a good idea to take plenty of water with you for your visit as it does get very hot here and you will be out in the sun a lot.

The Sumidero Canyon (Cañón del Sumidero, in Spanish) is one of the most beautiful and popular places to visit in Chiapas. I have been there each time I have visited Mexico and I love its landscape and the incredible wildlife!

At an easy distance from the state’s capital Tuxtla Gutierrez, it can be visited on day trips from either Tuxtla or San Cristobal, and it is a fantastic place to be fully immersed in nature and to admire wildlife!

The towering cliffs of the canyon are marvelous to look at, whether you stand on top of them or prefer admiring them from the comfort of a boat that takes you along the Rio Grijalva.

You’ll be accompanied by a Spanish-speaking guide to explain its history or show you the caves and the waterfalls. You may even encounter spider monkeys, crocodiles, and many bird species that live in the area.

What Is Sumidero Canyon?

Sumidero Canyon Chiapas is a natural canyon in southern Mexico, situated just north of the Chiapa de Corzo.

Beginning its life at the same time as the world-famous Grand Canyon in Arizona , Sumidero Canyon has been eroded into its current shape over 35 million years by the Grijalva River – a 300-mile-long river that snakes its way through southeastern Mexico.

The canyon is particularly striking. It boasts soaring near-vertical cliffs that reach as high as 1,000 meters (roughly 3,281 feet), with the river twisting and turning – at some points up to 90 degrees – through the narrow passage of the canyon that goes on for just over 8 miles (13 km).

Cañón del Sumidero is such a beautiful place that it’s the centerpiece of Sumidero Canyon National Park – a protected area that spans four municipalities across 53,840 acres.

Because of its status as a natural wonder of Mexico, it’s a popular spot for locals and domestic tourists to come and soak up the abundance of nature here (in fact, 80% of visitors are Mexican nationals). People enjoy boat trips along the river, hiking in the surrounding area, and spotting wildlife.

But this wasn’t always a popular boating spot. It was only in 1981 when the Chicoasen Hydroelectric Dam was built, that the water levels rose significantly, and the river became much deeper and much easier for boats to navigate. That’s when tourists started showing up.

Is Sumidero Canyon Worth Visiting?

There’s a lot going on at Sumidero Canyon Mexico. Along with the actual majesty of the canyon itself, here you will find five waterfalls, 30 rapids, beaches, caves, rock formations, and plenty of wildlife.

Alongside the endangered Central American river turtle, there’s also the American crocodile that visitors can glimpse, usually spotted sunning on the riverbanks.

Sumidero Canyon is surrounded by dense tropical rainforest, which really gives this place a “Lost World” kind of feeling. It’s kind of like a green version of the Grand Canyon, but even though it looks wild and unforgiving, much of the canyon area is accessible and can be safely explored via boat.

It’s truly stunning and totally packed full of things to see and do, and it boasts a burgeoning eco-tourism scene. The real question is, why wouldn’t you visit Sumidero Canyon? So, let’s see how to do it!

Exploring Sumidero Canyon is a rewarding experience. Not only is there the chance to float along the river on a spectacular boat journey, but there’s also a lot of wildlife to spot along the way. Let’s see in more detail what you can see and do at the Cañón del Sumidero.

The Ecological Park

At the center of the canyon, the new Ecological Park has been opened. The only way to get there, in fact, is by hopping on one of the boats that ply the river. Attractions at this newly-opened center include a wildlife sanctuary, and you can learn all about the local flora and fauna that call the canyon home.

Wildlife spotting is a big part of the experience in Sumidero Canyon. You can see river turtles and crocodiles, of course, but there are also spider monkeys. And there’s a lot in the way of avian life here, too – there are over 195 species of bird, including herons, vultures, egrets, and kingfishers.

Within the park itself, there are other wonderful animals to behold, from ocelot and pacas to white-tailed deer and fruit bats.

Cueva de los Colores

Away from the wildlife, there are natural hotspots to discover during your visit. One of these is Cueva de los Colores – named for its rainbow of geological colors that coat the cave walls. These colors, mainly shades of pastel pink, are produced when magnesium and potassium filtrate through the rock strata.

Dubbed a “natural chapel,” the caves also house an altar to the Virgin of Guadalupe, often decorated with flowers and candles left from the previous. The Cuevas de los Colores are particularly interesting when visited on December 12 (the feast day of the Virgin of Guadalupe), when people make a pilgrimage here and a floating mass is held on the river.

Árbol de Navidad

There’s also the Árbol de Navidad or “Christmas Tree.” Contrary to the name, it’s not actually a tree but a waterfall that gushes over moss and other plants that grow out of the rock. During the rainy season, the 200-meter-high (that’s 656 feet) waterfall is more powerful, giving the effect of a Christmas tree sparkling over the shrubbery growing from the cliff.

Opening hours and admission fees

Sumidero Canyon can be visited from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day but on Tuesdays (it’s closed on Tuesdays).

The following is a rough outbreak of the costs of visiting the Cañón del Sumidero.

ADMISSION FEE – 36 MXN ($2.14 USD) per person. This is the actual fee for the Sumidero Canyon National Park as a whole. When you visit, after you pay for the admission, you’ll be given a wristband. This gives you access to the park and the numerous viewing towers situated throughout the area.

GROUP BOAT TRIP – 270 MXN ($16.06 USD) per person – beware, the price can actually vary.

PRIVATE BOAT TOUR – Around 2800 MXN ($166 USD) for the entire boat.

Boats leave at regular intervals between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

How to explore Sumidero Canyon

A boat is probably the best way to experience Sumidero Canyon in all its glory. The river journey begins at the Cauhuare Embarkation Point, near Chiapa de Corzo.

The wait time for boats varies depending on the time of day (or time of year) that you visit – weekends and holidays are particularly busy. In quieter times, however, you may also have to wait for enough passengers to arrive to fill the boat. Boats have various capacities – 15, 20, 30, and even 40 passengers.

To enjoy a boat tour in Sumidero Canyon National Park, start by purchasing your ticket from the counter that’s closest to the entrance. After this, walk along the pier and hop on the boat. The first boat leaves when the park first opens, and trips continue throughout the day until early afternoon.

The trip itself is three hours long in total. You should make sure you’re prepared with adequate snacks and drinks (I’ll say more about that later).

As you chug along the Grijalva River, you’ll see the towering walls of the canyon, spot wildlife, and marvel at the colorful caves and the “Christmas tree”. Then the river will begin to open out towards the end of the journey as the boat reaches the dam (around 23 miles – 37 km – from Chiapa de Corzo).

This hydroelectric dam provides power for more than half of Mexico, and it’s actually one of the tallest dams in the world.

You’ll get to really lap up the immensity of the dam and the canyon from this terminal spot. The water here is also at its deepest – 860 feet (262 meters), to be precise!

The viewpoints

Once you’re off the boat, there’s still much more of the national park to explore. One of the best ways to really experience the sheer size of the canyon is by hitting up the Miradores.

These viewing towers – five in total – are situated throughout the national park and make for an amazing way to see the river cutting through the dramatic landscape and its dense forests.

There are several Miradores to visit – La Ceiba Mirador; El Roblar Mirador; El Tepehuaje Mirador (particularly beautiful); La Coyota Mirador; and Los Chiapa Mirador, which along with its stunning views, also boasts a restaurant and a bathroom.

What is the best time to visit?

Firstly, if you’re wondering what time of day is best to visit Sumidero Canyon, the answer is simple – the earlier, the better.

You should plan to embark on your boat trip at around 10:00 am to enjoy smaller crowds – and also the best light for taking pictures around the canyon.

Don’t plan your visit for a Tuesday either, because this is when the national park is closed.

As for the best times of year to visit Sumidero Canyon, it depends. In the winter months (November through February), the landscape is not as lush as it is in the spring or summer. There’s also less water, so the waterfalls are not quite as impressive.

In the summer months, the landscapes are much more green, and there’s more water, but it’s also a lot hotter. The rainy season (between June and October) brings gushing waterfalls and is a great time of year to visit all in all, in spite of the heat.

How to get to Sumidero Canyon

One of the most important parts of visiting Sumidero Canyon is knowing how to get there. The canyon is situated just 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) from Tuxtla Gutierrez (on the way to San Cristobal) and 76 km (47 miles) from San Cristobal, so regular transport between the two cities and the national park is easy to come by.

From Tuxtla Gutierrez

You have several options for getting from Tuxtla Gutierrez to the Sumidero Canyon.

BY CAR – If you are planning on renting a car for your trip around Chiapas, the best thing to do would be to visit Sumidero Canyon on your way to San Cristobal de las Casas from Tuxtla International Airport. The canyon is located right between Tuxtla Gutierrez and San Cristobal. You will have to drive along Highway 190.

BY BUS – Local buses and colectivos ply the route frequently, and this is the most inexpensive way to reach Sumidero Canyon – the trip costs around 20 MXN ($1 USD).

BY TAXI – Another option is to take a taxi – make sure you ask the staff at your accommodation how much it should cost as a guideline.

GUIDED TOURS – There’s also the option of taking a tour from Tuxtla Gutierrez to Sumidero Canyon. This is actually a pretty good option as you can reach the Miradores smoothly, and everything is planned for you. It’s more expensive than independent travel, but more convenient too.

For ease, I recommend this guided tour of Sumidero Canyon from Tuxtla Gutierrez . It also goes to the lovely Chiapa de Corzo.

Otherwise, there’s this excellent guided tour that includes pick up from Ángel Albino Corzo International Airport in Tuxtla Gutierrez and a stopover in Chiapa de Corzo and Simidero Canyon, with drop off in San Cristobal.

From San Cristobal

There are several ways of getting from San Cristobal de las Casas to Sumidero Canyon. Here is a quick outline:

BY BUS OR COLECTIVO – The trip from San Cristobal to Sumidero Canyon takes about an hour by bus or colectivo. Hop in a colectivo bound for Tuxtla Gutierrez, ask to get dropped off at Chiapa de Corzo, and then hop on another colectivo with a sign that says “embarcadero.” The overall trip should cost around 70 or 80 MXN ($4 to $5 USD) one way.

GUIDED TOURS – There are also tours you can take from San Cristobal. These will be more expensive than those offered at Tuxtla Gutierrez due to the longer distances involved. A Sumidero Canyon tour will include transport, the fee for the national park, and the river tour. They cost around 650 MXN (in the range of $50 USD). Much more convenient than the potentially uncomfortable colectivo ride but much more expensive.

You could consider this well-rated guided tour of Sumidero Canyon from San Cristobal that also includes a stop at Chiapa de Corzo.

From Chiapa del Corzo

If you happen to be based in Chiapa del Corzo, then you’re in luck! It’s super easy to get to the Embarkation Point for the boats – It only costs 13 MXN ($0.75 USD) on a local colectivo to reach it.

Chiapa del Corzo is often included as a stop-off on tours from San Cristobal or Tuxtla Gutierrez. Dubbed a “magic town,” this little town is a great spot to enjoy local food and culture. You’ll get around an hour or so to explore.

I recommend this tour that includes a stop at Chiapa de Corzo after you visit Sumidero Canyon.

What to bring on your trip to Sumidero Canyon

Firstly, you should bring a hat. You’re going to need your hat because you’ll be out in the sun pretty much the whole time. But make sure you keep hold of it – things can get pretty breezy when you’re out on the river! The boats go fast, and a hat can easily fly away.

Sunscreen is another must. This is integral for protecting your skin against the sun’s harmful UV rays. Consider eco-friendly sunscreen in order to protect the delicate balance of the natural environment.

You should also consider bringing along some layers and things such as a wind jacket or a poncho. Depending on the weather, you may get some rain – temperature fluctuations range from cool due to the high elevation to hot in the center of the canyon.

Bring plenty of drinking water, too. That boat ride alone can take a few hours, so you’ll need to keep hydrated while you’re out in the sun. Opt for a refillable water bottle such as this one to save on plastic waste.

Finally, make sure to bring your camera – with a good lens – to photograph the amazing wildlife, and if you have a pair, bring your binoculars.

Final tips for visiting Sumidero Canyon

There are just a few more things you should know for your Sumidero Canyon trip. Here they are:

BRING SMALL CHANGE – This is handy if you want to buy yourself some souvenirs, some food, or even use the toilets (the bathrooms cost 5 MXN to use; the Los Chiapa Mirador one is free, however).

DON’T BUY ANYTHING FROM CHILDREN – You may have children wanting to sell you souvenirs or food, but it’s best to not buy from children (who should be in school). Rather opt to buy from an adult instead.

DON’T TAKE YOUR WRISTBAND OFF – You’ll need to show it throughout the day – no wristband, no access to the Miradores. This will be checked by staff.

Tradition, culture, cuisine, and adventure.

You’ll find it all and much more in the charming colonial town of Chiapa de Corzo , located off the beaten path, 12km east of Tuxtla Gutierrez, in the Mexican state of Chiapas.

The town has been designated as one of Mexico’s Pueblos Magicos , or magical towns, because of its significant cultural heritage.

Those few intrepid travelers who have already discovered this often overlooked destination describe it as a relaxed, easygoing town framed by the warmth of the local people.

Perhaps best known as the jumping off point for exploring the magnificent Canon del Sumidero , Chiapa de Corzo has plenty of history and attractions within the town itself that make it worthy of spending a day if not two there.

While it’s popular with Mexican tourists, the notable absence of gringos and large tour groups make it enticing for those seeking a truly authentic experience.

Located on the north bank of the Rio Grijalva, Chiapa de Corzo has the distinction of being the oldest colonial town in Chiapas.

Get ready to step back in time.

Legend has it the Spaniard Deigo de Mazariegos laid claim to the land and founded the town when his army invaded a settlement of indigenous people.

Rather than surrender, the natives jumped to their deaths from the cliffs of the nearby Canon del Sumidero.

Eventually tiring of the hot, tropical climate, Mazariegos left and found San Cristobal de las Casas .

It is with this backstory in mind that in Chiapa de Corzo’s main plaza the La Pila Fountain stands like a sentinel dating back to the 16th century.

Legend tells the story of the monumental red-orange brick fountain with its octagonal design, arches, flying buttresses and domed roof being built to resemble the Spanish crown.

Getting there

While air travel will not take you to Chiapa de Corzo directly, it is recommended to fly into Tuxtla Gutierrez International Airport also known as Aeropuerto Internacional Ángel Albino Corzo which is just (7.5 mi / 12km) from town.

You can easily drive to Chiapa de Corzo, located 12km east from the city of Tuxtla Gutierrez.

All you need to do is follow the Federal Highway 190, also known as Panamericana and you’ll see signs pointing you in the right direction.

Combis / Colectivos

Combis or colectivos (small local buses) also depart frequently from Tuxtla Gutierrez.

It takes about 45 minutes and you will be dropped off on the north side of the town’s main plaza.

From San Cristobal de las Casas

If you are based in San Cristobal and feeling adventurous you can take any of the combis to Tuxtla Gutierrez and ask to be dropped off at the junction and then hail another colectivo heading east to Chiapa de Corzo. No worries, it’s much easier than it sounds.

Things to See and Do

Rio grijalva / sumidero canyon tour.

The Rio Grijalva boat tour is a must! Crocodiles, spider monkeys, white herons are just a few of the wildlife you’re likely to see during your journey along the river.

The river is also the best way to travel to and experience the wonder of Canon del Sumidero (more information on this below).

Santa Domingo de Guzman Church

One block south of the main plaza you’ll find the 16th Century Santa Domingo de Guzman Church .

The original bells, cast in 1576, from copper and silver weigh more than 10,000 pounds and are still used today.

The adjoining house was a former convent and is now home to a cultural center and museum.

Archaeological Site of Chiapa de Corzo

If you are ready to channel your inner Indiana Jones, the archaeological site of Chiapa de Corzo is worth a visit.

Between the years of 850-450 BC is was a major ceremonial center.

Local Markets

Be sure to make time to explore the backstreets and local markets.

Here you can shop in relative peace (translation: free from pushy hawkers) and find locally made sombreros, leather goods, handicrafts and jewelry.

If street art strikes your fancy, on the east side of the church you’ll find a few murals and be sure to look for the street art on the road that runs parallel to the river.

Traditional Food

By now you must be getting hungry! Chiapa de Corzo is also known for its culinary delights and cooks up a variety of local dishes unique to the region.

Feast on many different types of tamales, peptic con tasajo which is thinly cut beef served in a special pumpkin seed sauce or cochinito horneado, a roasted pig flavored with adobo sauce.

Canon del Sumidero

Canon del Sumidero is a spectacular must-see and it’s the number one reason people visit Chiapa de Corzo as it’s the main attraction in town.

Sumidero Canyon is a narrow and deep canyon carved out by the Rio Grijalva, a major river which flows north along the canyon’s floor.

The creation of the canyon began around the same time as the Grand Canyon in the United States.

Yeah, you can compare the awesomeness of Canon del Sumidero to the Grand Canyon – it’s truly that impressive !

Picture this – canyon walls stretching toward the sky some 3,200 ft/1000 m tall as the river makes a run through its narrow passageways.

Wildife and lush vegetation color the riverbanks in a display of natural wonder.

The interior of the canyon has it all – whitewater rapids, waterfalls, beaches and even freshwater springs and caves you can explore.

One of the best known caves is called the Cueva de Colores – Caves of Color -Its name comes from a number of minerals which form colors on the cave walls, most notably varying shades of pink.

Inside there is also an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe.

If you’re so inclined bring some fresh flowers or candles to leave behind as an offering.

You can also explore the Cueva de Silencio – the Cave of Silence, named for its lack of an echo or any other kind of interior sounds. Spooky silence – perhaps. But also super cool!

Canon del Sumidero is also home to a number of endangered species like the Central American River Turtle and the American Crocodile.

The crocs can be spotted often catching rays on the banks of the river.

Surrounding the canyon is the Canon del Sumidero National Park which spans four municipalities in the state of Chiapas.

At the north end of the canyon you’ll find the Chicoasen Dam which is vital for storing water and is one of Mexico’s most important sources for generating hydroelectricity.

As the canyon is the second most visited site in the state of Chiapas, after Palenque, commercial activity inside the national park is limited to those who serve tourists, sell food and Mexican handicrafts and folk art.

Note: Some visitors have remarked about the trash alongside the riverbanks, but nonetheless were awe-inspired by the canyon’s natural beauty and the connection they felt to Mother Nature while they were there.

Getting to Sumidero Canyon

So you want to visit Sumider Canyon now, right?

Well, if you are driving you can get a bird’s eye view of the canyon thanks to the five lookout locations along the highway.

But the best way to experience the majesty of the canyon is by boat tour.

The 2-3 hour round-trip river/canyon boat tour leave daily from the “embarcadero” or pier, two blocks south from the main square in Chiapa de Corzo.

You’ll see signs pointing you in the right direction.

Tip: Be sure to bring you camera because you’re you want to miss capturing snaps of beautiful canyon and the wildlife, including the crocodiles sunning themselves on the riverbanks.

The Canyon del Sumidero river tour will also take you past some of the caves along the way.

A number of local tour operators are selling pre-packaged tours to Chiapa de Corzo and Sumidero Canyon.

Tour operators can be found in all surrounding destinations including Tuxtla Gutierrez, San Cristobal de las Casa, Palenque and Villahermosa.

For some who want convenience and would rather forgo the work of organizing a trip on your own this can be a good option.

When to Visit

If weather is your main consideration you need to understand the high altitude (450m) and mountainous terrain make for a varied and somewhat unpredictable climate.

It can get very warm in the summer and equally cold in the winter, with rain occurring anytime of the year.

The best advice is to pack for any and all weather conditions.

If your desire to visit is driven more by events and local happenings then January is the time to go.

Fiesta de Enero

Chiapa de Corzo is famous for its Fiesta Grande de Enero , which takes place annually from January 8-23.

During this religious and traditional celebration parachicos (colorful, costumed dancers) fill the streets in a lively display.

It’s regarded as one of the most important cultural events in the state of Chiapas with some historians estimating the fiesta has origins dating back to the 17th century.

Where to Stay in Chiapa de Corzo

Most hotels are in and around the side streets located near the main plaza (zocalo).

Prices start around $150 pesos per night and upwards for a single room, with attached bathroom and hot water.

• La Ceiba Hotel and Spa  is a rather large (85 guest rooms) well-kept, colorful hotel, set in a lush tropical garden. A room in the back facing the garden is your best bet. The hotel has a restaurant specializing in typical Chiapas cuisine, while the spa has a large swimming pool.
• The Posada Rocio , Av. Zaragoza No.347, located just off the main square near where the combis drops you off, is a friendly and colorful posada. Rooms are clean with attached bathrooms. Ask for a room at the top if you want a view of the main plaza.
• Hotel Los Angeles  offers rooms with private bathrooms, terraces and wifi! There is also a restaurant on the grounds offering local flavors of the region.

For those seeking adventure, wonder, and a truly authentic experience in Mexico, a trip to Chiapa de Corzo combined with an excursion to Canon del Sumidero should be at the top of your bucket list.

Cañón del Sumidero is in Chiapas , just east of Tuxtla Gutierrez . The area is one of the most scenic of Mexico national parks , but is generally not crowded because it is off the usual tourist path.

Understand [ edit ]

This is a long canyon, with sheer, steep sides up to 1 km high. There is a river running the length of the canyon, upon which boat tours are run. The boat tour is the best way to experience the canyon because you can see the entire length from the perspective of the base of the cliffs. There are also a number of scenic overlooks throughout the park, and you can easily drive to these (or take a taxi) if you just want a short, quick visit to see a bit of the canyon and to grab a few snapshots.

History [ edit ]

The Grijalva River was dammed in the early 1980s when the Chicoasan Dam was built to support a hydroelectric plant to supply Mexico's growing energy needs. The dam elevated the river substantially, creating 20 miles of navigable, calm waters from what was once a rushing, rocky mountain river. Today, the river and its man-made reservoir is generally called El Sumidero.

Landscape [ edit ]

The landscape is rugged mountain tropical forests.

Flora and fauna [ edit ]

The national park is home to a wide range of wildlife. Mammals include monkeys, coatis, jaguars and more. More than 100 species of birds are known to inhabit the tropical forests in and around the canyon, including some colorful tropical members of the parrot family. Snakes, lizards and other reptiles make their home in the park, including several venomous species, so be careful about where you step and what you touch as you explore the forest trails. In the river itself, you will probably see American crocodiles sunning themselves on any piece of surface rock they can find, and if you keep your eyes peeled, you may see some Central American River Turtles lurking below the surface.

Climate [ edit ]

The climate is generally tropical, with warm, humid conditions.

Get in [ edit ]

The canyon is on the east side of Tuxtla Gutierrez , which has an airport and bus terminal with frequent service to other cities in Mexico. From Tuxtla Gutierrez, take a taxi to the Embarcadero in Chiapa de Corzo (about a 30 minute taxi ride). Or take a colectivo from the terminal located at Calle Tercera Ote. Sur, between Av. 2a Sur Ote and Av. 3a Sur Ote (across the restaurant El Pozol). The cost is M$18 (Feb 2023). From the centre of Chiapa de Corzo it is a 1 km walk to the port (embarcadero). You can buy boat ticket on site for M$280 (Feb 2023).

An all inclusive tour from San Cristobal de las Casas costs M$200 ( pesos ). You can also take a colectivo towards Tuxtla Gutiérrez (M$40) and ask the driver to drop you near Chiapa de Corzo. Cross the road and take another colectivo (M$5) to the 'embarcadero' where you buy a boat ticket for M$280. The boat ride takes about two hours, so bring drinking water, a hat and sunscreen. There will be a stop mid-tour where souvenirs and refreshments can be bought.

By car, you can drive to the six scenic overlooks ( miradores ). The easiest is on the outskirts of Tuxtla Gutierrez and is called La Ceiba. The most popular overlook is Mirador Cañón del Sumidero, inside the national park, surrounded by rugged mountains and dense forest. (Though the boat tour is, by far, the better way to get memorable pictures).

Fees and permits [ edit ]

M$280 for a boat tour. The boatmen have formed a co-operative which sets the passenger fees. The area from where the boats depart and return is a nice, shaded spot with toilets and kiosks. Life jackets are supplied and compulsory. Miradores are free to visit, but are only open 8am-5pm, and closed Tuesday for maintenance.

Get around [ edit ]

Boat into the canyon itself, drive into the park, then walk or mountain bike.

The boat trip through the canyon is the park's main draw, but there is quite a lot of mountainous forest surrounding the river, and there are tour guides in Tuxtla Gutierrez who will guide you on a hiking or mountain biking trip into the park. The miradores frequently have marked trails that are good for short hikes.

Rock climbing and rappelling are allowed in the park, but use a specialized tour guide with local knowledge and the equipment and skills needed to stay safe. Vertigo Rock Climbing in San Cristobal de las Casas leads climbing groups into the park.

Souvenirs, water, snacks and other items can be purchased in Tuxtla Gutierrez or Chiapa de Corzo. There are no shops or vendors in the park itself. You may find guidebooks that mention the Eco Park area, which once did have shops and activities for travelers, but the Eco Park closed during the COVID crisis and has not reopened (as of October 2022).

The canyon was created by the mighty Grijalva River , which still flows through it. This process began around 35 million years ago by cracks in the earth’s crust and erosions from the river. 

It was formed around the same time as the Grand Canyon. However, the Sumidero Canyon is much smaller, at about 8.1 miles long. The canyon’s walls reach 1,000 meters (3,281 feet) at their highest point and boast intriguing rock formations and caves throughout.

The canyon’s interior features thirty rapids, freshwater springs, sandy riverside beaches, and cascading waterfalls. You’ll also find endangered species in the area, such as the American crocodile and the Central American river turtle. And there is plenty more to explore amongst the lush deciduous rainforest.

Boat Tours Along Grijalva River

One of the best ways to discover the beauty of the canyon is by taking a guided boat trip along the canyon walls. There are several tours from both San Cristobal de las Casas and Tuxtla Gutierrez. The most common departure point is at Chiapa de Corzo. 

The scenic round-trip tour will take you towards the Chicoasen dam, an embankment dam, and a hydroelectric power station. Before the Chicoasen dam was established in 1980, the strong current made it dangerous to cross the river. 

Today, it is one of the most important hydroelectric power sources in Mexico and neighboring Guatemala with energy. And the calm waters offer a memorable experience for all.

Along the way, you’ll see several animal species like spider monkeys, white-tailed deer, and kingfishers. The area is also a haven for bird watching, so don’t forget to carry a pair of compact binoculars .

The Christmas Tree is one of the most popular seasonal waterfalls in the area. It comprises a 750-meter (2,461 foot) limestone formation. The best time to view this 200-meter (656 foot) high waterfall is during the rainy season when it is active. How to Get to Sumidero Canyon, Chiapas

The nearest city to Sumidero Canyon is Tuxtla Gutierrez. You can get to and from the city by air, bus, or car. Angel Albino Corzo International Airport, also called Tuxtla Gutierrez International Airport, is the primary airport that serves the city.

There are also several buses that travel between Tuxtla Gutierrez and other cities, such as Campeche, Mexico City , Merida, Cancun, and Villahermosa. These bus rides operate frequently each day.

A bus ride from Mexico City to Tuxtla Gutierrez takes around 13 to 14 hours, while traveling by car takes about 10 to 11 hours. So if you want a quicker journey on the road, a scenic car ride might be a better choice.

You’ll also find a number of car rental services if you’d like to explore Mexico on your own time. 

After arriving in Tuxtla Gutierrez, you’ll make your way to Chiapa de Corzo, the starting point for your visit to Sumidero Canyon National Park. If you’re visiting the canyon from Angel Albino Corzo International Airport, the park is only a 40-minute drive away. 

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit the Sumidero Canyon is during the rainy season, from June to October. The rainy season brings lush greenery and gushing waterfalls that leave visitors in awe. 

If you’re looking to steer clear of the crowds, it’s best to visit the canyon in the morning. During the early hours, you can enjoy the peaceful environment and impressive lighting, which lends itself to epic pictures of the canyon.

Tip: You can visit the Sumidero Canyon National Park every day from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, but it is closed on Tuesdays for maintenance.  

Entrance Tickets to Sumidero Canyon National Park

As the canyon is set within the Sumidero Canyon National Park, you’ll need to pay the park’s admission fee to visit this breathtaking site. The entrance fee is around $2 CAD per person.

After paying for admission, you’ll receive a wristband that provides you with access to the park and several viewing towers in the area. You can expect to pay around $15 CAD per person for a group boat trip. If you want a more intimate experience, you can take a private tour for $171 CAD.

Sumidero Canyon Garbage Problems

Unfurntely do too bad local management of garbage around the state of Chiapas, so more than 1,600 tons of garbage float on the waters of the Sumidero Canyon. However, luckily so have locals now started to collect the garbage floating around in the canyon.

10 Things to Know Before Visiting Sumidero Canyon

If you’re considering visiting Sumiedro Canyon (Cañón del Sumidero in Spanish) in Chiapas, Mexico, you’ve come to the right place.

This breathtaking lush canyon in southern Mexico is one of Chiapas’ most popular tourist attractions—and for good reason. Sumidero Canyon is one of the most beautiful places I visited during my six months in Mexico, but there are so many things I wish I would have known ahead of time.

In this Sumidero Canyon travel guide I go through ten things you should know before you visit. Make sure to read through each point so you can properly set your expectations and maximize your precious time in beautiful Chiapas.

Things to Know Before Visiting Sumidero Canyon

1. the canyon has two main embarkment points.

Sumider Canyon has two main embarkment points, in other words, places where you can board a boat to explore the canyon via the Rio Grijalva.

Most Sumidero Canyon travel guides only mention the most well-known embarkment point which is located in the town of Chiapa de Corzo, south of the canyon. However, you can also embark from the northern embarkment point , which is right by the giant Chicoasén dam.

The canyon itself is about 8-miles long, so you will be able to see all the same sights regardless of which embarkment point you depart from. However, keep in mind that the northern embarkment point is over an hour from Chiapa de Corzo.

For whatever reason, the tour I booked from a vendor in San Cristobal took us to the northern embarkment point, and then we stopped in Chiapa de Corzo for several hours afterward.

All in all, I think we spend between five and six hours in the car that day. As someone who gets carsick, I wish I would have specifically booked a tour that included a boat trip from Chiapa de Corzo instead, which would have halved our time in the car.

2. Whether you take a tour or drive to an embarkment point, you’ll end up on the same boat—with a Spanish speaking guide

It’s important to understand that no matter how you get to the canyon, you will only have one option for a boat ride. If you traveled to Sumidero Chiapas with a guide from San Cirstobal or Tuxtla, expect your guide to stay behind as you’re stuffed into tour boats with other visitors. They certainly aren’t luxurious boats, but they’re the only way to explore the canyon via the river!

And given that 80% of the canyon’s visitors are Mexican citizens, its not too surprising that the boat rides only have Spanish speaking guides. I visited Sumidero Canyon while I was taking Spanish classes in San Cristobal, but I honestly only understood a few things the guides said, like when they pointed out the ‘monos’ (monkeys) on the river bank.

If you don’t speak Spanish, you’ll still be able to enjoy the boat ride, but you might not learn much about the canyon itself. However, chances are, one of the other passengers might speak English and be able to translate a little for you!

3. The boat ride is sort of a booze cruise

After six months in Mexico, I’ve learned to expect nearly every boat tour in Mexico to resemble a booze cruise. Personally, beer is the last thing I want after a long, windy drive in a tour van, but beers are cheap, cold, and delivered to your tour boat via a floating bar, so I can understand the appeal.

If you do decide to purchase a drink, just be aware that these boats move fast, so you’ll probably want to drink quickly or risk spilling during the ride. Of course, also be sure to keep your trash and do your part to protect this beautiful national park.

4. If you take a tour, you won’t get ‘lunch’ until the late afternoon, so bring snacks!

If you end up booking a tour from San Cristobal, be aware that you probably won’t have a chance to buy (or eat) a proper meal until late in the afternoon.

Our tour ended up at our ‘lunch’ spot in Chiapa de Corzo at nearly 4pm. I was so glad that I had actually packed a lunch so I could fuel up earlier in the day and be able to explore Chiapa de Corzo instead of sit in an overtly touristy restaurant there.

You will probably have a few chances to buy snacks or food along the way. For instance, basic snacks like chips were sold at some of the miradors, and enchiladas were available at the northern embarkment point. However, if you have any dietary restrictions, or prefer fresh, nourishing food over chips, you’ll thank yourself later if you pack a lunch.

My husband and I bought vegan wraps from Te Quiero Verde in San Cristobal then night before and everyone on our tour was asking about them. I also always pack a ton of healthy snacks whenever I leave the US on a big trip and then eat them on day trips and travel days.

5. You might need to lower your expectations about the tour company

You might have started to catch onto this, but I didn’t love the tour company I went with. I’m obsessed with finding the best local tours whenever I travel, so I might have slightly high standards.

But given that we were forced to sit in the car for several extra hours unnecessarily during Sumidero Canyon tour, and our tour guide didn’t tell us much about the places we visited, I think I’m justified in saying that it was a mediocre experience at best.

I wish I could say I was able to find a better tour company to recommend to my readers, but I haven’t. For some reason, every tour company offering day trips to Sumidero Canyon from San Cristobal seem to have sub-par ratings and reviews online. In fact, I get the sense that most, if not all, of these tours are actually run by the same company and I’m not sure why.

Some things you can expect include: early or late pickup from your hotel, poor communication, no English speaking guides, unnecessarily long drives, etc.

You’ll still love the natural beauty that the canyon has to offer, but the experience of getting there might not be the most smooth, and honestly, that’s okay—the canyon is still worth it!

6. The canyon will be a lot hotter than San Cristobal

The temperatures at Sumidero Canyon, Chiapa de Corzo, and Tuxtla Gutiérrez can come as a shock if you’re visiting from chilly San Cristobal de las Casas.

Since this part of Chiapas is at a much lower elevation than nearby San Cristobal, temperatures are very different so you’ll probably want to bring a change of clothes.

A sun hat, sun protectant clothing, sandals, extra water, and sunscreen are helpful to have! However, it is worth noting that you may still get chilly on the Sumidero Canyon boat ride, so a light jacket should be on your Chiapas packing list as well.

7. You might see crocodiles, monkeys, and unique geological formations

Typical stops on a Sumidero Canyon boat tour include places where you can spot local wildlife and striking natural wonders.

Namely, you’ll have the chance to see the endangered American crocodile along the banks of the river. In addition, most tours stop at an area that is home to a family of spider monkeys.

You’ll also get to see the ‘Arbol de Navidad’ (Christmas Tree), a 200-meter waterfall in the shape of a tree. If you visit during the rainy season, you’ll get to watch water cascade past vibrant green formations on the canyon walls that look like branches. Cruising beneath this waterfall was the highlight of my visit to the canyon.

8. Sadly, you’ll also probably see a lot of trash in the canyon

I was shocked when I saw tons of floating trash on the edges of certain parts of the river. I assumed that it was from littering tourists, and I also assumed that no efforts were being made to clean it up.

I was wrong, though. With further research I learned that most of this trash comes cities and villages upstream. Unfortunately, an estimated 5000 tons of trash make their way through the Rio Grijalva each year.

There are efforts to clean up the trash, but unfortunately the root problem has not been fully addressed. Chiapas has the highest poverty rate in Mexico, so its not surprising that environmental awareness is not the most pressing concern.

On the top this, it is important to note that deforestation, limestone extraction, and illegal settlements are also a problem in the national park. Sadly, Sumidero Canyon is far from a perfect ecotourism destination, but my hope is that the next generation will create lasting change in Chiapas and Mexico as a whole.

9. There are five miradors

There are five main miradors, or viewpoints, where you can look down at the canyon from above. Most tours include a stops at a few of these viewpoints, but if you’re taking your own car, you can click the links below for the locations on Google Maps.

Are the Sumidero Canyon miradors worth visiting? The miradors are around an hour away away from Chiapa de Corzo, so whether you visit is totally up to you! I loved seeing the canyon from above, but I don’t think I’d miss it too much if we didn’t go. And as I mentioned earlier in this article, I would have preferred to spend much less time in the car anyhow.

10. Sumidero Canyon is breathtaking, and certainly worth visiting

Even with my mediocre tour experience, I would certainly say that Sumidero Canyon is worth visiting!

Of course Mexico is known for its beaches, but Canon del Sumidero is one of so many examples of how this country’s natural beauty expands far beyond the coastline.

If you’re visiting San Cristobal or another part of the region, be sure to add Sumidero Canyon to your Chiapas itinerary!

When considering what time of year to visit Sumidero Canyon, you’ll want to think about Chiapas’ rainy season. It runs from May through October each year. If you visit in the height of the rainy season, exploring the canyon might be very uncomfortable—and flooding could even impact your tour. However, if you visit late into the dry season, the canyon will be less lush and vibrant.

With this in mind, the best time of year to visit Sumidero Canyon is near the tail end of the rainy season and beginning of the dry season, in October, November, and December. The canyon walls will still be lush with green foliage, but you’ll be less likely to get caught in a rainstorm on the river.

If you’re wondering what time of day to visit, morning is probably best and when there will be the fewest tours. Also, keep in mind that the viewpoints are closed on Tuesdays, so I recommend opting for another day of the week.

If you arrange your own transportation to Sumidero Canyon and book a boat ride directly a boat captain, you can expect to pay between 200 and 300 pesos (~$11-17 USD). Cañón del Sumidero en Chiapas: ¡la guía definitiva!

• Cómo visitar el Cañón del Sumidero en 2024+ Mis Consejos

El Parque Nacional del Cañón del Sumidero es un área natural protegida en Chiapas , México .

Se trata de una amplia zona de 2.789 hectáreas entre las localidades de Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapa de Corzo, Nuevo Usumacinta y San Fernando.

El cañón se formó hace unos 35 millones de años y hoy es uno de los destinos más bonitos de Chiapas , ya que ofrece una magnífica vista panorámica a los visitantes.

Aquí te presento mi guía completa del Cañón del Sumidero , que visité durante mi estancia en San Cristóbal de las Casas .

Te explico por qué no te lo puedes perder, sus mejores atractivos, cómo llegar con un tour o por tu cuenta , qué llevar y dónde dormir para visitarlo.

La mejor opción: tomar un tour guiado, cómo llegar por tu cuenta, ¿qué llevar, vídeo del cañón del sumidero, visiter chiapas en coche, cómo llegar a chiapas en avión, ¿te vas de viaje a méxico ¡esto te puede interesar.

Si prefieres reservar el tour al Cañón del Sumidero sin leer el artículo (aunque te lo recomiendo para conocer todos los atractivos e información práctica) aquí tienes los tours disponibles.

Los dos tours incluyen lo mismo (solo varia el punto de partida): transporte ida y vuelta desde tu hotel, paseo en barco y por los miradores, y una parada en Chiapa de Corzo.

¿Qué ver y hacer en el Cañón del Sumidero?

Hay dos formas de visitar el Cañón del Sumidero en Chiapas: con el paseo en barco y recorriendo los miradores .

Es importante tener en cuenta que son experiencias completamente diferentes y realmente recomiendo hacer ambas para que tu visita sea completa.

¡Se trata de un paseo por el río Grijalva que dura unas 2h y permite descubrir varios km del cañón, desde sus entrañas, entre sus paredes de hasta 1000m de altura!

Embarcamos en el barco y atravesamos el cañón pasando primero por debajo del puente Belisario Domínguez .

Es importante saber que si hoy el río parece tranquilo, es sólo gracias a la construcción en 1980 de una presa hidroeléctrica , ya que antes la corriente era fuerte y resultaba peligroso cruzarlo. Por lo tanto, es de gran importancia porque facilitó el acceso entre Chiapa de Corzo y San Cristóbal de las Casas.

La zona es el hogar de varios animales , aves carroñeras, el paujil , la paca (también llamada tepezcuintle en México), el ocelote, el venado de cola blanca, cocodrilos (nos encontramos con uno INMENSO) y monos araña.

De hecho, vimos con dos monitos muy simpáticos, ¡uno de ellos se llama Pepe!  😄

En las paredes se puede ver varias cuevas pequeñas y formaciones naturales. Los dos más importantes son El Árbol de Navidad y la Cueva de Colores , donde el guía hace una parada:

• La Cueva de Colores , también llamada Capilla de colores o La Cueva del Hombre: es una capilla natural con paredes de tonos rosados, debido a la infiltración natural de diferentes minerales. Allí se ha colocado una Virgen de Guadalupe y el 12 de diciembre se celebra una gran misa en su honor, a la que los participantes llegan en barco.
• El Arbol de Navidad : es una formación caliza de 750 m de altura situada en la pared y creada por una cascada de 200 m. En el momento de mi visita no habia agua (solo se puede ver en temporada de lluvias), pero la enorme estructura es impresionante, ¡toda cubierta de musgo!

Información práctica para el tour en barco:

• Existen 4 embarcaderos (Chiapa de Corzo, Unidad Deportiva, Cahuare, Belisario Dominguez) gestionados por cooperativas locales. De lunes a domingo, de 8 a 16h
• Hay barcos de diferentes tamaños (15, 20, 30 o 40 personas). Sólo salen cuando están llenos, así que si vas solo, puede que tengas que esperar.
• El precio del paseo en barco puede ser de 200 pesos a 600 pesos, e incluye la pulsera de 67 pesos de la CONANP (Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas) que también da  acceso a los miradores .

También puedes reservar este tour al Sumidero desde San Cristobal de las Casas que incluye el transporte, el paseo en barco, los miradores y una parada en el pueblo de Chiapa de Corzo:

El cañón es impresionante desde dentro… ¡pero también lo es desde arriba!

Hay una ruta con 5 miradores de diferentes alturas, que permiten admirar las curvas del río Grijalva que se abre paso entre las paredes verdes del Sumidero: La Ceiba, La Coyota, Roblar, El Tepehuaje y finalmente Los Chiapa .

Abrígate bien, y sobre todo para el último, Los Chiapa , que es la más alta de todas (1000m), ¡y corre un viento muy fuerte!

Por cierto, en este mirador hay una tienda y me han dicho que el ámbar (uno de los principales productos de Chiapas ) es más barato y de mejor calidad que en San Cristóbal de las Casas .

Información práctica para visitar los miradores

• Los miradores son accesibles de 8h a 17h (excepto los martes)
• El acceso cuesta 67 pesos. O gratis si ya has pagado el paseo en barco.

Los tours al Cañón del Sumidero desde San Cristóbal de las Casas suelen incluir una parada en el pueblito de Chiapa de Corzo .

Algunos fueron al mercado artesanal, otros se sentaron a comer. Ya eran las 3 de la tarde y, por supuesto, todo el mundo tenía hambre. Yo también, pero preferí aprovechar mi hora para descubrir el lugar.

La plaza principal está rodeada de tiendas de recuerdos y varios quioscos que venden dulces locales. También hay una construcción inesperada: «La Pila», una fuente de estilo mudéjar construida en 1562 y que es el emblema de la ciudad.

Pero te recomiendo que camines por las callejuelas. Hay unos murales preciosos y el pueblo es encantador, ¡así que mejor disfruta de paseo!

¿Dónde dormir para visitar el Cañón del Sumidero?

Hay dos posibilidades para visitar el Cañón del Sumidero: dormir en Tuxtla Gutiérrez o en San Cristóbal de las Casas .

¿Dónde  dormir en Tuxtla Gutiérrez?

• Hostal Tres Central : es un  hostal acogedor y colorido , tiene una terraza con hamacas y vista sobre las montañas. Dormitorios compartidos y cuartos privados, muy limpios y con wifi. Ofrece la mejor relación calidad-precio de la ciudad en su categoría.  ¡ A partir de sólo 11 euros!
• Hotel Madrid :  si buscas un poco más de comodidad, este hotel está muy bien ubicado en el centro de Tuxtla Gutiérrez, a unos pasos del Jardín de la Marimba y de la plaza principal. Cama King y desayuno incluido,  ¡desde sólo 31 euros por noche!
• Hotel Marriott Tuxtla Gutiérrez :  un hotel de gama alta a precios muy asequibles con camas muy cómodas, muy buen wifi, gimnasio, piscina, restaurante abierto también para la cena. Con desayuno-buffet, ¡desde sólo 65 euros la noche!
• The Coffee Bean Hoste l : hostal muy acogedor con zonas comunes agradables, restaurante y bar, jardín, terraza con hamacas, mesa de billar y varias opciones de desayuno. ¡Desde sólo 11 euros en dormitorio compartido!
• Parador Margarita : a sólo 3 cuadras de la plaza principal y de la estación de autobuses; es un pequeño remanso de paz con jardín y camas muy cómodas. El Wifi y el desayuno están incluidos. ¡Desde sólo 42 euros por noche!
• Hotel Diego de Mazariegos : El hotel se halla en una magnífica mansión del siglo XVIII, que conserva el estilo colonial mexicano, un patio interior encantador con una fuente y decoración clásica en tonos cálidos. El hotel cuenta con dos restaurantes y un bar. Wifi y desayuno incluido. ¡Desde sólo 67 euros por noche!
• Casa Lum Hotel Boutique : ¡Mi alojamiento favorito de San Cristóbal de las Casas ! Es un pequeño y sofisticado hotel decorado entre la modernidad y el diseño tradicional. Estupendo restaurante, una terraza con vista panorámica sobre la ciudad y un jardín. A pocos pasos de la plaza central y de todos los lugares de ocio y diversión, es el lugar ideal para los enamorados. ¡Desde 150 euros por noche!

¿Cómo visitar el Cañón del Sumidero?

El acceso al Sumidero, y especialmente a los miradores, es un poco complicado. Así que, a menos que tengas un coche, la mejor opción es definitivamente ir con un tour , como hice yo.

No soy muy fan de los tours organizados, pero éste me ahorró mucho tiempo y por tanto me permitió disfrutar plenamente del lugar. En realidad no se trata de una «visita guiada», sino de un «transporte organizado».

La visita comienza a las 9h y termina alrededor de las 15h. Incluye el transporte, el paseo en barco , el recorrido por los miradores y tiempo libre en Chiapa de Corzo . Un pequeño consejo: ¡lleva algo para comer y agua!

Aquí te explico cómo ir al Sumidero por cuenta propia:

• En transporte público:

-Para el paseo en barco : si vas por tu cuenta, lo más fácil es ir al muelle de Chiapa de Corzo .

Primero hay que ir a Tuxtla Gutiérrez (1h15 desde San Cristóbal), y luego tomar otro autobús local que te deja en la plaza principal de Chiapa de Corzo (45min).

También puedes ir de Tuxtla a Chiapa de Corzo en taxi, que no es muy caro. Para el regreso a San Cristóbal de las Casas , hay que tomar un colectivo desde la carretera (no hay ninguno dentro de Chiapa de Corzo).

-Para ir a los miradores : toma la combi R-69 que te deja a 100 metros de la entrada del parque.

El primer mirador, La Ceiba, está a 2 km de subida y el último, Los Chiapa, a 16 km de la entrada. Así que prepárate para caminar.

Mi consejo Llega temprano, ya que el parque cierra a las 17h.

Si quieres llegar hasta el último mirador, tu única opción será parar un coche en el camino , pero tendrás menos posibilidades si llegas después de las 15h.

• En coche : tomar la carretera del «Libramiento Norte», luego seguir la señal «Calzada Al Sumidero» hacia el noreste.

Si ya estás en Tuxtla, son 30 min – tomar la Avenida Central hasta la salida donde se encuentra la Plaza Poliforum. Sigue derecho y llegarás al puente sobre el Río Grijalva, ahí verás las indicaciones para Chiapa de Corzo.

Al ser un lugar de montaña con variación de altitud, puede hacer mucho frío y mucho calor . Durante el recorrido en barco, el sol es fuerte, y en los miradores sopla el viento.

Así que trae ropa ligera, pero con un buen jersey, calzado cómodo, buena crema solar, con una gorra o sombrero. Y, por supuesto, agua.
