Vingegaard or Pogačar? Who Do the Betting Markets Favor to Win the Tour de France?

Not much separates the top two GC threats heading into the final week, but Vegas gives a slight edge to one rider over the other.

110th tour de france 2023 stage 15

As this year’s Tour prepares to start its final week, very little continues to separate these two champions. It’s been a historically close TdF so far. Of course, only one will wear the maillot jaune in Paris. So who is favored by those experts in Vegas? Sports betting odds often provide good insight into which riders have the edge. After all, these services stand to lose a lot of money if they get this kind of thing wrong.

Here are the 2023 Tour de France odds for the General Classification (as of Monday, July 17 at 5 p.m. EDT) from three different gambling services.

  • Jonas Vingegaard -120
  • Tadej Pogačar +100
  • Jonas Vingegaard -125

These figures tell us that Vegas gives the edge to the defending Tour champion Vingegaard. But it’s only a very slight advantage. -120 translates to an implied probability of 54.5 percent and -125 translates to an implied probability of 55.6 percent. +100, Pogačar’s odds, translates to an implied probability of 50 percent.

More or less, this competition is a toss up. If you’ve been following the Tour de France this year, these numbers shouldn’t be too surprising.

Vingegaard gained fairly significant time on Pogačar during Stage 5, putting his early advantage at 53 seconds. But Pogačar has little by little been chipping away at Vingegaard’s lead in the yellow jersey competition. Pogačar has gone on the offensive numerous times in the last week plus, and on a few occasions, Vingegaard hasn’t been able to match his accelerations.

Vingegaard now leads Pogačar by just 10 seconds—a number that can shrink or increase over the last six stages between an individual time trial to open the final week on Tuesday and two tough mountain stages.

With the exception of his slip up on Stage 5, Pogačar has appeared to have a bit of a one-up on Vingegaard over the ensuing 10 stages. Yet the betting markets seem to still favor Vingegaard, albeit very slightly.

Bicycling isn’t going to give you gambling advice, nor do we condone gambling. These odds merely give us a look at how those who stand to make a lot of money see this head-to-head battle playing out.

As far as we’re concerned, we’re excited to sit back, relax, and enjoy what should be a thrilling last week of the men’s Tour de France.

Understanding the Tour de France

The Tour de France is sport cycling’s biggest event . It is part of the three Grand Tours along with the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana and is comparable to the Indianapolis 500 of its motorsport counterpart. As such, Tour de France betting is very popular and Tour de France odds are widely available from the top online sportsbook.

The modern tour typically has 21 stages, one per day over 23 days (two rest days). Tour de France betting odds are available for many of these stages, such as the mass-start stages. These are categorized into “flat”, “hilly” or “mountain” stages. Time bonuses are generally awarded to the first three finishers in 10, six, and four seconds, respectively.

The climb of Alpe d’Huez is also one of the more prestigious mountain stages as it is challenging and inclement weather conditions have forced changes to this part.

The tour is divided into 21 stages:

  • 6 flat stages.
  • 7 hilly stages.
  • 6 mountain stages with 5 summit finishes (La super Planche des Belles Filles, Col du Granon, Alpe d’Huez, Peyragudes, Hautacam).
  • 2 individual time trial stages.
  • 2 rest days.
  • 1 transfer day.

The time trials, which has first implemented in 1934, is also known as the “prologue”. This decides who gets to wear yellow on opening day.

These are usually two to three-time trials. Other notable stages include the Champs-Elysees, which is the final stage of the Tour de France.

Since 1975, this stage typically starts on the outskirts of Paris and is generally a more easygoing part of the race though there have been some hotly contested races here.

Tour de France Betting Odds

Betting odds for the Tour de France can fluctuate and vary among different gambling services or bookmakers. These odds reflect the perceived likelihood of certain riders winning the General Classification.

Tour de France betting’s simplest form is the outrights. This is where you bet on who wins the Tour de France. This is available for most of the year though it can be taken off the board if any major changes occur. Closer to the race, usually during the week of, more Tour de France betting lines are opened. Choose wisely!

Team Classification Betting

These cycling betting markets include “Team Classification” which is where you bet on which team will win the Tour de France. Specifically, it is a prize given to the best team as awarded since 1930.

The calculations, as of 2011, are based on:

  • The times of the cycling team’s three best riders per stage.
  • Time bonuses
  • Penalties are ignored.

Young Rider Classification Betting

Betting on the “Young Rider Classification” is also popular. It is a secondary competition outside of the General Classification and began in 1975.

The leader of this classification wears a white jersey as opposed to the yellow jersey of the general category.

The requirements for this classification have changed through the years but generally refers to cyclists under the age of 26.

King of the Mountains Betting

The “King of the Mountains” is another award given to the best climbing specialist of the race. In the Tour de France, it is officially known as the Mountains classification.

Top 10 Betting

Last but not least, a top 10 finish is also a Tour de France betting market. Instead of betting on the outright winner, folks can bet on whether a cyclist will finish within the top-10 of the race. The odds will be much shorter here as there is a better chance of cashing this bet.

Tour de France 2023 odds, field, predictions, dates: Proven cycling expert reveals surprising picks, best bets

Sportsline's gene menez correctly predicted the winners of the yellow, green and white jerseys in the 2019 tour de france.

tour-de-france-getty-images-cbs.jpg

Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar renew their budding cycling rivalry on Saturday at 6:30 a.m. ET when the two champions begin their three-week battle in the world's biggest cycling race, the 2023 Tour de France. The 24-year-old Pogacar already has won the Tour twice, in 2020 and '21. The 26-year-old Vingegaard is the reigning Tour de France champion, relegating Pogacar to second last year. The two cyclists have dominated racing this season, having combined for 21 wins.

Vingegaard is the slight +110 favorite (risk $100 to win $110) to win the yellow jersey in the latest 2023 Tour de France odds from Caesars Sportsbook, while Pogacar is second in the odds at +125. Jai Hindley is a distant third choice in the odds, at +2000. The Tour begins on Saturday with a hilly 113-mile stage in the Basque region of Spain and ends on July 23 with its traditional finish on the Champs-Elysees in Paris. With so many variables in every Tour de France, you'll want to see how SportsLine senior writer Gene Menez breaks down the race before making any 2023 Tour de France picks of your own .

A former reporter and associate editor for Sports Illustrated, where he covered an array of sports for almost 14 years, Menez has been obsessed with the Tour de France for almost four decades. He has been following the iconic three-week race since the mid-1980s when Greg LeMond was riding to three yellow jerseys. Menez correctly predicted the winners of the yellow, green and white jerseys in the 2019 Tour and the white jersey winner of the 2021 Tour.

Now Menez has analyzed the 2023 Tour de France route and contenders and has identified five best bets for the yellow (overall winner), green (best sprinter), and polka dot (best climber) jerseys. He's only sharing his expert Tour de France 2023 picks at SportsLine .

Top 2023 Tour de France picks

Menez, who did a deep dive on the contenders for all of the jersey competitions, is bullish on Biniam Girmay (+900) to win the green jersey, also known as the points competition. The 23-year-old has been one of the best sprinters in the world over the past 18 months. He established himself as a major contender for the green jersey earlier this month when he won Stage 2 of the Tour de Suisse, becoming the first rider from Eritrea to win a stage of that race.

Last year's green jersey winner, Wout van Aert, already has said he is not targeting the points competition this year. And even though Girmay will be riding in his first Tour de France, Menez likes that he has experience in a grand tour, having won a stage in last year's Giro d'Italia. "I prefer Girmay over pure sprinters such as Jasper Philipsen because Girmay has the ability to get over some of the lower-difficulty categorized climbs," Menez told SportsLine.  You can see who else to back here .

How to make 2023 Tour de France picks

Menez's pick to win the yellow jersey is a rider who excels in "the long, high mountains." Menez also is high on a "big longshot" who "enters the Tour in good form" to earn a top-three finish at odds of more than 30-1. He's only sharing his Tour de France picks and analysis at SportsLine .

So which rider wins the Tour de France 2023, and what big longshot finishes on the podium? Visit SportsLine now to see Menez's detailed Tour de France picks, all from the SportsLine staff writer who has been following the sport for almost four decades , and find out.

Jonas Vingegaard begins his quest for a second straight Tour de France title when the race starts its three-week journey on Saturday in the Basque region of Spain. Vingegaard, now 26-years-old, knocked off two-time Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar last year with brilliant tactics and superior climbing in the second half of the race. This year, Vingegaard is the slight +110 favorite to win the yellow jersey in the latest 2023 Tour de France odds from Caesars Sportsbook. Pogacar is second in the odds at +125, while Jai Hindley is a distant third at +2000. TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 7 BETTING PREVIEW

Friday's stage is a relative easy stage that features one easy climb with almost 40 kilometres to go.

The final two kilometers will virtually be completely straight, only with a couple of roundabouts to stretch things out before the finish line.

However it might be a difficult day as well. Temperatures will go over 30 degrees throughout the whole afternoon into Bordeaux and and crosswinds are not excluded throughout the day.

Dark horses.

Honestly we don't expect big surprises here. Anyway, the likes of Luca Mozzato, Bryan Coquard, Sam Welsford, Peter Sagan, Corbin Strong and Biniam Girmay have the potential to grab a Top 5 placement.

Tour de France 2023 – Analysing the contenders

The final form ranking for the yellow jersey contenders

Jonas Vingegaard Tadej Pogacar Tour de France

Most of the hard work has been done and there is precious little time to conjure up form, condition or confidence for the 2023 Tour de France favourites. The big race, starting in Bilbao on July 1, is almost here.

That means it’s final tune-up time: the Critérium du Dauphiné and Tour de Suisse have given us the final display of form for the WorldTour’s best, with only their final preparations separating them from La Grande Boucle.

As ever, Cyclingnews has its form ranking for the favourites, with regular updates through the season and into the Tour itself.

We rank the Tour de France contenders by their performances and as the months have now trickled down to scant days before the Grand Départ in Bilbao, it's time to run the rule over the contenders for the maillot jaune for a final time.

1. Tadej Pogačar

  • Team: UAE Team Emirates
  • Tour experience: Winner in 2020 and 2021, runner-up in 2022
  • 2023 results: 1st at Jaén Paraíso Interior, 1st with three stage wins at Ruta del Sol, 1st with three stage wins at Paris-Nice, 4th at Milan-San Remo, 3rd at E3 Classic, 1st at Tour of Flanders, 1st at Amstel Gold Race, 1st at La Flèche Wallonne, DNF at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, 1st at Slovenian Nationals Time Trial, 1st at Slovenian Nationals Road Race

Tadej Pogacar is a major favorite for the Tour de France after an exceptional 2023 season

It was a spring campaign for the ages from the voracious and versatile Pogačar. However, it ended unceremoniously when a fractured wrist at Liège-Bastogne-Liège led to several weeks off the bike, though he was soon putting in long indoor training sessions to compensate.

In late May, he went out to Sierra Nevada (later than his teammates) to do more preparation. He then headed to Sestriere for a final bit of training and recon in the rarefied air.

It remains to be seen whether the injury affects him or if his glorious, tiring spring has any impact but Pogačar indicated that he’s not worried in his latest interview with Cyclingnews . The only races on his schedule between Liège and the Grand Départ were the Slovenian national time trial and road race, both of which he won hands down, which hardly augers badly.

Pogačar will have to be at his best to beat Vingegaard, but revenge has likely been on his mind ever since the finale of last year’s race. You’d be a fool to write him off.

=1. Jonas Vingegaard

  • Team: Jumbo-Visma
  • Tour experience: Winner in 2022, runner-up in 2021
  • 2023 results: 1st with three stage wins at O Gran Camiño, 3rd at Paris-Nice, 1st with three stage wins at Itzulia Basque Country, 1st with two stage wins at Critérium du Dauphiné

Jonas Vingegaard

With Pogačar out of racing sight and more out of mind for much of the build-up to the Tour, Jonas Vingegaard was the focal point for rivals and observers alike with his strength and ease. They’re so closely-matched, we’ve put the pair in equal first.

After a three-week altitude camp at Sierra Nevada, he passed his last test at the Critérium du Dauphiné with flying colours, winning a brace of stages and the overall, with the biggest winning margin since Charly Mottet in 1987. As if that wasn’t enough, after the race the defending champion indicated he can still improve.

Back in March, Pogačar got the better of Vingegaard at Paris-Nice . Both he and Pogačar have similar remarkable win rates this year but of course the Tour de France is the one that counts above all others. The form book and results suggest it’ll be their duel for glory. All roads lead to Bilbao and a renewal of hostilities between the two titans of the 2022 edition.

3. Jai Hindley

  • Team: Bora-Hansgrohe
  • Tour experience: none
  • 2023 results: 16th at Tour Down Under, 32nd at Cadel Evans Race, 13th at Volta ao Algarve, 32nd at Ardèche Classic, 53rd at Drôme Classic, 15th at Tirreno-Adriatico, 8th at Volta a Catalunya, 12th at Amstel Gold Race, 83rd at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, 4th at Critérium du Dauphiné

Jai Hindley in action at the Dauphine, with a performance that positioned him as a contender for the Tour

Hindley’s season has shifted up a gear at the perfect time. Following finishes on the fringes at Catalunya and the Amstel Gold Race, he was among the strongest at the Critérium du Dauphiné .

Consistency on the climbs at this mini Tour de France was complemented by one of the best time trial rides of his career, laying the foundations for fourth overall.

With Vingegaard and Pogačar looking like a cut above the rest, it is likely to be a fierce scrap for the third step of the podium. Tour debutant Hindley will have to get through the hubbub of the first week unscathed, but the 2022 Giro d’Italia winner appears to be in pole position to be the best of the rest.

4. Mikel Landa

  • Team: Bahrain-Victorious
  • Tour experience: Five appearances, 4th in 2017 and 2020
  • 2023 results: 7th at Volta Valenciana, 2nd at Ruta del Sol, 7th at Tirreno-Adriatico, 5th at Volta a Catalunya, 2nd at Itzulia Basque Country, 3rd at Flèche Wallonne, DNF at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, 22nd at Critérium du Dauphiné

Mikel Landa

We’ve been accustomed to Landa lighting up spring stage races, showing his face at Tirreno-Adriatico , the Volta a Catalunya and Itzulia. His steady run of stage race contention, however, came to an end at the Dauphiné with a particularly poor showing in the time trial. The experienced Basque knows what he’s doing and acknowledged he wasn’t in the best shape before the race. Not ideal, but he’s still on course for a high finish at a TT-light Tour de France.

5. David Gaudu

  • Team: Groupama-FDJ
  • Tour experience: Five appearances, 4th overall in 2022
  • 2023 results: 7th at Tour du Var, 2nd at Ardèche Classic, 4th at Drôme Classic, 2nd at Paris-Nice, 4th at Itzulia Basque Country, DNF at Amstel, Flèche and Liège, 30th at Critérium du Dauphiné

David Gaudu was subdued at the Dauphine, but is still a contender for the Tour de France

Gaudu was off the pace at the Critérium du Dauphiné in the mountains and against the clock. To boot, he copped social media abuse after a few stages. There’s no cause for panic after one poor performance for France’s big hope.

His spring campaign was strong, finishing next best to Tadej Pogačar at Paris-Nice. It also bears remembering that, though he won a stage, Gaudu wasn’t in the frame at last year’s Dauphiné GC either, and that preceded a career-best result.

6. Enric Mas (crashed out on stage 1)

  • Team: Movistar
  • Tour experience: Four appearances, 5th in 2020, 6th in 2021
  • 2023 results: 5th at Ruta del Sol, 6th at Tirreno-Adriatico, 5th at Itzulia Basque Country, 17th at La Flèche Wallonne, DNF at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, 17th at Critérium du Dauphiné

Enric Mas

Mas looked like every bit like a Tour de France podium contender eight months ago. He matched his second places in the Vuelta and Il Lombardia with a fan-pleasing, attacking style.

Still, there was little of that on display at the Critérium du Dauphiné. Dropping three minutes to winner Mikkel Bjerg in the time trial was no big surprise; of greater concern was losing nearly that same amount to a flying Vingegaard on the race’s queen stage.

There’s clearly a bit of work to be done to make sure it’s a case of más rather than menos at the Tour de France. Mas wanted to put his COVID-19 abandon of last year’s race well behind him but crashed on stage 1 of the 2023 Tour and was forced out of the race again .

7. Romain Bardet

  • Tour experience: Nine appearances, 2nd overall in 2016, 3rd in 2017
  •  2023 results: 8th at Tour du Var, 11th at Ardèche Classic, 11th at Drôme Classic, 7th at Paris-Nice, DNF at Volta a Catalunya, 9th at La Flèche Wallonne, 15th at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, 7th at Tour de Romandie

PORTVALAIS SWITZERLAND APRIL 25 Romain Bardet of France and Team DSM sprints during the 76th Tour De Romandie 2023 Prologue a 682km stage from PortValais to PortValais UCIWT on April 25 2023 in PortValais Switzerland Photo by Dario BelingheriGetty Images

Bardet is Mr. Steady of the stage races, rarely terrible or incandescent. The experienced Frenchman sat fourth overall at the Tour de France last summer until an off-day in the blazing sun to Foix put paid to his podium hopes.

COVID-19 in April didn’t seem to slow him down at the Tour de Romandie , where he was seventh. A fifth place at the Tour de Suisse suggests altitude has honed his condition, and he enters the race as a valuable GC contender for DSM.

8. Ben O'Connor

  • Team: AG2R Citroën Team
  • Tour experience: Two appearances, 4th and a stage in 2021
  • 2023 results: 6th Tour Down Under, 46th Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, 13th Tirreno-Adriatico, 14th Volta a Catalunya, 11th Classic Grand Besançon Doubs, 5th Tour du Jura, 50th Liège-Bastogne-Liège, 3rd Critérium du Dauphiné

Ben O'Connor

The Australian climbs into our top ten after his third place finish at the Critérium du Dauphiné, repeating his result from twelve months ago. Coming off an altitude camp, O’Connor was the surprise factor in the time trial, delivering AG2R-Citroën’s first-ever top-five performance in a WorldTour race against the clock.

Last year’s Tour was a bust for O’Connor , dropped on the cobbled stage and abandoning with a torn glute. The first week, with its hillier Basque Country start, may well suit the rider from Perth better as he hopes to improve on his landmark 2021 showing.

9.   Giulio Ciccone

  • Team: Trek-Segafredo
  • Tour experience: Two appearances, wore the yellow jersey in 2019
  • 2023 results: 2nd and stage win at Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, 5th at Tirreno-Adriatico, 7th and stage win at Volta a Catalunya, 5th at Flèche Wallonne, 13th Liège-Bastogne-Liège, 11th and stage win at Critérium du Dauphiné

Giulio Ciccone

After storming the Bastille in Grenoble for triumph on the last day of the Dauphiné, the little Italian surges into our top ten. Ciccone has talked of going for a Tour de France stage victory and the King of the Mountains this summer. Consistency has been his big problem in Grand Tours.

It could be different this summer. Ciccone has had three victories and barely been out of the top 10 in 2023, in spite of COVID-19 dumping him out of a Giro d’Italia team he was due to lead.

His self-belief will be sky high and he’ll be in a positive frame of mind, getting married weeks before the race. With few time trial kilometres in the 2023 race, a top-10 finish is within his reach.

10. Dani Martínez

  • Team: Ineos Grenadiers
  • Tour experience: Three appearances, stage win and 28th in 2020
  • 2023 results: 25th at Vuelta a San Juan, 1st at Volta ao Algarve, 25th at Paris-Nice, 34th at Itzulia Basque Country, 23rd at Critérium du Dauphiné

With the Tour on the horizon, there is no clear leader for Ineos Grenadiers.

Dani Martínez has been targeting that spot since the start of the season, but the last day of the Critérium du Dauphiné likely knocked the Colombian’s confidence. He was the race’s big loser, losing 10 minutes and tumbling down the GC from sixth overall.

A simple jour sans or indicative of a bigger problem? The Colombian was flying on the way to first place at February’s Volta ao Algarve but hasn’t broken the top 10 on GC since.  Martínez has had a poor start to the Tour, losing 3:13 on stage 1 and a further 7:00 on stage 2 to fall out of overall contention.

Third with Geraint Thomas last year, Ineos Grenadiers are at risk of having their most peripheral Grande Boucle in years. But the kids could step up. Tom Pidcock , who finished a disappointing 22nd at the Tour de Suisse, showed his off-road form in recent weeks, winning in Nove Mesto. In an interview with Cyclingnews the Briton laid out his stage goals but was reticent to see himself as a GC contender just yet.

Former Spanish national champion Carlos Rodríguez’s ninth overall in the Alps eclipsed Martínez’s performance. Rodríguez was the silver lining on a poor opening stage for the British team and was the only Ineos rider in the top 10 after the brutal Grand Depart in the Basque Country.

Bubbling under

Egan Bernal is one of the great question marks of the 2023 season

Put out a search party for Simon Yates. The Jayco-Alula man has not raced since stomach problems forced him to abandon the Tour de Romandie on stage 2. This summer, less is evidently more for the Briton. He is set to go straight from training at altitude to the Grand Départ. He was second at the Tour Down Under and fourth at Paris-Nice, but his form is unknown.

EF Education-EasyPost leader Richard Carapaz was on the attack at the Critérium du Dauphiné and sprinted to second place behind Julian Alaphilippe. The Olympic champion is flying under the radar a little; he’s not finished in the top 10 in a GC since being runner-up at last year’s Giro d’Italia.

Unfortunately, Carapaz was involved in the same crash that forced Enric Mas out of the Tour, and abandoned before stage 2 with a fractured patella.

Neilson Powless showed his all-round power through Paris-Nice and the spring Classics, and he gives a potential other option for EF.

Louis Meintjes (Intermarché Circus Wanty) showed he’s ticking along nicely, finishing seventh at the Dauphiné. Cofidis captain Guillaume Martin was a few seconds and a place higher. Sergio Higuita could be a backup option for Bora-Hansgrohe. Expect those three to be in the mix come July.

2019 Tour de France champion Egan Bernal also performed well in the Critérium du Dauphiné high mountains to finish twelfth overall. Given his knee problems this year, it’s surely too soon for Tour contention, but with confirmation of his team selection it's clear his recovery from his life-threatening crash appears to be going well.

With his withdrawal from the race with illness, Alexey Lutsenko (Astana Qazaqstan Team) didn't give us a showing of his form at the Tour de Suisse, having finished top 10 in the past two editions, but he did win both the road race and time trial in the Kazakh Nationals. Lutsenko's GC hopes were ruined on stages 1 and 2 where he lost a combined 18 minutes to the leaders and he will likely now chase stage wins.

As for the Giro d’Italia giants?  Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) and Primož Roglič  (Jumbo-Visma)  won’t be at the Tour , which makes sense, but it’s a shame for the fans. The sport’s blue riband event also comes too soon for Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineos Grenadiers) who crashed out of the Giro d’Italia with a fractured hip.

Tour de France Stage 13 Predictions, Picks, Profile & Odds: Friday, 7/14

  • Author: Mark Lammey, Spotlight Sports

Tour de France (2)

One of the biggest international events each summer is the Tour de France, and we’re now over halfway through the 2023 race. There have been viral tweets of fans doing silly things that have hindered the cyclists and plenty of expectations being met when it comes to the favorites heading into the event.

As we approach Stage 13 on Friday, we’re here to avoid the bad luck with our Tour de France Stage 13 predictions and how to use our best bet to claim a guaranteed $150 DraftKings Sportsbook new-user promo.

TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 13 PREDICTION: Krists Neilands to win the stage (+13000at DraftKings Sportsbook)

Click here to sign up at DraftKings for a guaranteed $150 bonus with a $5+ bet on anything as a new member, such as our Tour de France Stage 13 predictions.

2023 Tour de France Stage 13 Predictions & Profile for Friday, 7/14

Entering the 2023 Tour de France, there were two clear favorites to win the race - Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar. In fact, our experts provided their prediction ahead of the start of the race in this article .

It’s important to note that this is a 21-stage race, so although you may not see those two having won each stage, they still remain the clear favorites in terms of the betting market. It was Pagacar’s teammate - Adam Yates - who won the opening stage, and it wasn’t until Stage 6 that we saw Pogacar come out victorious.

So, how will Friday's leg play out? That’s what we’re here to answer with the best bet from our Tour de France Stage 13 predictions.

Tour de France Stage 13 Picks & Best Bet

Right off the bat, Stage 13 is one of the relatively shorter stages at 137.8 kilometers, or 85.6 miles. However, that doesn’t mean it isn’t just as grueling.

Cyclists will be riding through quite a rough pass in the Jura Mountains, and the entire stage is expected to take about three and a half hours. This begins a stretch of three straight mountain stages, so this will be a chance for the non-sprinting focused cyclists to shine. With that in mind, we’re looking at a great breakaway rider.

Krists Neilands nearly won Stage 10, but was caught down the stretch to grab fourth, as Pello Bilbao ultimately won the stage. That gutsy performance is why we’ve seen him take it easy since then, but now knowing the few stages ahead, this is his time to shine. Not only did he have a great showing, but he also won the Combativity Award following the stage.

That’s chosen by a jury of peers for the most aggressive rider, so it’s certainly an achievement to be recognized. With a few stages since then to now turn things back up, everything is setting up nicely for the Latvian. Therefore, the best bet from our Tour de France Stage 13 predictions is on Neilands to win the stage (+13000 at DraftKings Sportsbook ).

How to Bet on Neilands at DraftKings and Score a $150 Bonus Offer

Favorites general classification Giro d'Italia 2024 | Tadej Pogacar? These gentlemen also dream of the pink jersey

Is there a more beautiful jersey in cycling than the pink one? Tadej Pogacar must have thought the same thing, as after winning two yellow jerseys in the Tour de France, the Slovenian is finally making his debut in the Giro d'Italia this year. The top favorite? Absolutely. But in the Tour of Italy, it’s not always the favorite who wins. IDLProCycling.com lists the top ten contenders for the overall victory!

Please also read/coming soon on IDLProCycling.com:

- Preview of the Giro d'Italia

- Favorites for the points classification (purple jersey)

- Favorites for the mountain classification (blue jersey)

- Favorites for the youth classification (white jersey)

- Betting pool tips for the Giro d'Italia

Recent winners of the Giro d'Italia

2023 - Primoz Roglic

2022 - Jai Hindley

2021 - Egan Bernal

2020 - Tao Geoghegan Hart

2019 - Richard Carapaz

2018 - Chris Froome

2017 - Tom Dumoulin

2016 - Vincenzo Nibali

2015 - Alberto Contador

2014 - Nairo Quintana

Favorites for the General Classification of the Giro d'Italia 2024

To compile this list, (former) editors at IDLProCycling.com were asked for their top ten in response to the question: "Who is most likely to win the Giro d'Italia?" Each top ten was assigned points as follows: 12 points for first place, 10 for second place, and then 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 point respectively. For each rider, the total points received were converted into a percentage of the maximum points possible. This percentage is indicated next to each rider. This helps give a clearer view of how the odds stack up according to IDLProCycling.com!

Antonio Tiberi/Juan Pedro López - Bahrain Victorious/Lidl-Trek: 17/108 points (15.7%)

We start off with a tie in the rankings. Antonio Tiberi appeared seven times on our lists, but often in the ninth or tenth spot. The 22-year-old Italian will chase a classification for the first time in a grand tour for Bahrain Victorious, and why would he not be able to surprise everyone? His third place in the Tour of the Alps was impressive. Top five is his goal, but with us, he just has to make do with narrowly making the top ten.

The same applies to Juan Pedro López, the winner of the Tour of the Alps and a former wearer of the pink jersey for several days. Representing Lidl-Trek, the 26-year-old Spaniard seems to have carte blanche to try again. His stage win in the Alps—where he dramatically dropped everyone—promises much. The problem for him are the time trial kilometers, so he must go on the offensive in his beloved mountains for a top ranking.

Damiano Caruso - Bahrain Victorious: 18/108 points (16.7%)

At number nine, we find Damiano Caruso, Tiberi's teammate at Bahrain Victorious and, of course, the runner-up of the 2021 Giro! That same year, he also won a stage in the Vuelta. However, the Tour de France in 2022 and 2023 didn't go as well for him.

Can he do it again at the age of 36? Or will it be more about chasing stage wins and supporting the new generation? His results in 2024 haven't been very spectacular, but neither were they before his second place in 2021. Caruso is tough, never count him out!

Luke Plapp - Jayco-AlUla: 18/108 points (16.7%)

Scoring the same as Caruso but placed a spot higher, Luke Plapp has caught the attention of several editors who believe he could be this Giro’s surprise package. One even placed him third! Why? Plapp finished sixth in Paris-Nice and seems to be climbing better than ever. Moreover, the Australian from Jayco-AlUla is an outstanding time trialist.

His switch from INEOS Grenadiers to Jayco is paying off, although he recently mentioned that the team's focus for the classification is on Eddie Dunbar. The Irishman isn't on our list, but Plapp is. He’s poised to surprise us. The Giro has often been a platform for riders to come into their own. Maybe this is the moment for the 23-year-old Plapp.

Daniel Felipe Martínez - BORA-hansgrohe: 39/108 points (36.1%)

Another man who, after a surprising departure from INEOS, has been tearing up the streets is Daniel Felipe Martinez. He beat Remco Evenepoel twice (!) in explosive finishes at the Tour of the Algarve. And let’s not forget his role as a domestique for the overall winner Egan Bernal in 2021, where he finished fifth in the Giro.

At BORA-hansgrohe, this year is all about the Tour de France. They are sending Primoz Roglic, Jai Hindley, and Aleksandr Vlasov to focus on it. This gives Martinez free rein to fully explore his potential as a GC contender. If he's really on point, he can compete with the best. He has, after all, also won the GC in the Dauphiné and the Tour of the Basque Country in his career.

Cian Uijtdebroeks - Visma | Lease a Bike: 46/108 points (42.6%)

At Visma | Lease a Bike, since December, they have had one goal: to make a splash in the Giro! Despite losing Wout van Aert and Wilco Kelderman to injuries, there remains more than enough quality to compete for stage wins every day. Olav Kooij, Jan Tratnik, Attila Valter... Impressive, to say the least.

One rider who consistently sneaks under the radar is Cian Uijtdebroeks. The young Belgian's switch from BORA to Visma last winter has been much discussed, and the Giro might shed light on whether this move was beneficial. Considering his eighth-place finish in a competitive Vuelta in 2023, he’s expected to perform even better in this Giro... We're eager to see what he does!

Thymen Arensman - INEOS Grenadiers: 54/108 points (50.0%)

Thymen Arensman is the first and only Dutchman on this list (most of our editors are Dutch), but he's no ordinary competitor. Born to race for the GC, Arensman might not typically finish in the top three of explosive finales, but he consistently secured a strong top ten spot in both the 2022 Vuelta and 2023 Giro.

Having finished sixth twice in a grand tour, he's aiming higher now. Let’s say at least top five. Geraint Thomas is the declared leader at INEOS Grenadiers, but the 24-year-old Arensman is a dangerous dark horse. After finishing fifth in the Algarve and sixth in the Tirreno, and with a year at INEOS under his belt, it's time for him to harvest the fruits of his labor.

Ben O'Connor - Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale: 61/108 points (56.5%)

We're slowly moving towards the podium, but according to our editorial team, it might just be out of reach for Ben O'Connor. Nonetheless, the Australian from Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale is having an excellent season. There's no reason to believe he can't continue this form into the Giro.

The 28-year-old O'Connor is rock solid in the mountains and has improved significantly in time trials over the past few years. He won a stage in the 2020 Giro and followed up a year later with a stage win and an eighth-place finish in the final classification in the Tour de France. 2023 was marred by crashes and injuries, but in 2024, O'Connor has already impressed with a second-place finish in the UAE Tour and the Tour of the Alps, and fifth in the Tirreno.

Romain Bardet - Team dsm-firmenich PostNL: 68/108 points (63%)

Romain Bardet in the best form of his life? At Liège-Bastogne-Liège, he finished second with impressive form, after placing fifth at the Tour of the Alps. Watching a good Bardet race is a delight. And who knows what he might achieve in the GC if dsm-firmenich PostNL fully commits.

And why not? The time trials won't be easy for Bardet, but the Frenchman has greatly improved in this discipline and also has plenty of mountain stages and bonus sprints to compensate. After his second and third places in the Tour in '16 and '17, we'd love to see him on the podium again. However, it won't be handed to him on a silver platter!

Geraint Thomas - INEOS Grenadiers: 73/108 points (67.6%)

As previously noted, Geraint Thomas is the leader at INEOS Grenadiers, but it's always tough to fully gauge the Welshman. After his Tour de France victory in 2018, his career seemed to wane, but in recent years, he's rediscovered his top form. He finished third behind Pogacar and Vingegaard in the 2022 Tour and was the runner-up to Roglic in last year's Giro.

INEOS wants to race aggressively, whatever that may mean. Thomas on the attack? We've rarely seen that. He's mainly a model of consistency. Never really having a bad day, always finishing among the leaders. And in this way, we might see him on the podium again in Rome.

Tadej Pogacar - UAE-Team Emirates: 108/108 points (100%)

Whether any of the ten names mentioned can dream of overall victory will largely depend on one rider. Tadej Pogacar is the man to beat, the rider who stands out when everyone else is performing at their usual level. And this season, the Slovenian from UAE-Team Emirates is at his best...

He clinched a victory at Strade Bianche after an epic eighty-kilometer solo break, secured four (!) stage victories and the overall win in Catalonia, and topped it off with a win at Liège-Bastenaken-Liège following another bold solo effort from La Redoute. With a strong team backing him at UAE, if Pogacar stays healthy for three weeks, everything points to him dominating. However, the Giro still has to be raced, particularly with Pogacar also eyeing a win at the Tour de France this summer...

Tour de France 2023: our selection of the most beautiful mountain stages

Inspiration

Cycling Tourism Nature and Outdoor Activities Sporting Activities Mountains

Le Tour de France 2023 s'annonce très relevé avec des étapes de montagne dans l'ensemble des massifs français, l'occasion de redécouvrir la montagne en été.

Reading time: 0 min Published on 4 December 2023, updated on 15 April 2024

The most famous cycle race in the world, the Tour de France will be taking to the skies once again this year, as the 3,404km and 21 stages will take in all 5 of France's mountain ranges! The Pyrenees, the Auvergne volcanoes, the Jura mountains, the Alps and the Vosges massif... The peloton has plenty of pedalling to do and plenty of climbing to do. The grandiose landscapes, the high altitude finishes and the dizzying descents promise to be emotional highs. To experience the highs (and lows) of the Grand Loop, saddle up with our selection of the most beautiful mountain stages.

From Tarbes to Cauterets-Cambasque, the Pyrenees take centre stage

Les coureurs du Tour de France 2023 devront cette année encore gravir Le col du Tourmalet, dans les Pyrénées.

After 3 stages on the Spanish side, welcome to the French Pyrenees! First there's Bayonne and the Basque country, Dax and its thermal baths, Pau and its beautiful castle where King Henry IV was born. And then there's Tarbes, with its breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, its palm-lined streets (yes, yes!) and its gourmet markets. The riders of the 2023 Tour de France will need a lot of courage to tear themselves away from this gentle way of life and tackle the climbs of the Aspin and terrible Tourmalet cols . The reward for all this climbing is a finish on the Cambasque plateau, overlooking the charming resort of Cauterets, in the heart of the Pyrenees National Park, where the Pic du Midi is enthroned. Want to cool off? Try the hike to the peaceful Lac d'Ilhéou . In a green setting with magnificent views and waterfalls, picnics and swimming...

The Puy de Dôme, a feast for the eyes in Auvergne

Au cœur des Volcans d'Auvergne, le Puy de Dôme fait partie du parcours du Tour de France 2023, une première en 35 ans.

The ascent of Puy de Dôme, the undisputed star of the Auvergne, will be one of the highlights of the 2023 Tour de France! The youngest and highest volcano in the Puys chain has not featured on the itinerary for 35 years. Taking on this fearsome and majestic peak and finishing with a 360° view over the gentle rolling hills of the Parc naturel régional des Volcans d'Auvergne is sure to motivate many a rider! But did you know that you can also climb this peaceful giant by mule track or on board the Panoramique des Dômes, a picturesque little cogwheel train? In just 15 minutes, you'll be transported to an altitude of 1,465 m, with the 80 volcanoes of the Puy range and the Limagne fault (listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site at your feet. To complete a stage that's full of fireworks, the Vulcania Park is not far away! Who can beat that?

Breathtaking escapes in the Jura

Le Tour de France 2023 s'attaque au Col du Grand-Colombier dans les Montagnes du Jura, offrant une vue plongeante sur les lacs des Alpes.

Expect to fall under the spell of Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne! Just 1 hour from Lyon and the Monts du Beaujolais, this small town in the Ain département, from which the Tour de France 2023 peloton will set off on 14 July, is a delightful medieval town. With its pink stone houses, flower-bedecked bridges and old market hall housing one of France's most popular traditional markets, it is also the gateway to the Dombes region, a paradise for fish farmers and birdwatchers with its landscapes of water and ponds. Take advantage of this area on foot, by boat or, ideally, by bike (it's flat!), before taking to the heights of the Montagnes du Jura , just a stone's throw away. The Pyramide du Bugey, from the top of which you can see Mont Blanc and Lake Geneva, is a must-see. The Tour de France riders attack it via the Col du Grand Colombier. At top speed. Take your time, the panorama is well worth it!

In the Alps, between lakes and legendary passes

Au cœur de la Vallée d'Aulps, près de Morzine, le lac de Montriond est sur le parcours du Tour de France 2023.

It's doubtful that the riders will enjoy the view of Lake Geneva as they take their first pedal to the metal in the Alps at Annemasse on stage 14 of the Tour de France 2023. We recommend this one, though, as well as the view of Lake Annecy and its turquoise waters. Then it's time for a series of twists and turns and climbs to the legendary passes of the Alps, including the famous Col du Feu, an unprecedented climb for the peloton. At an altitude of 1,000 metres, in the heart of the Portes du Soleil ski area, the stage finish in Morzine won't dampen the spirits of those who love nature. In summer, the little village resort in the Alps is an ideal playground for lovers of outdoor activities : a stroll along the Dérêches river, swimming in Lake Montriond, canyoning or via ferrata... the hardest thing will be to choose.

From Gets to Saint-Gervais, Mont Blanc in your sights

For the first time since its creation, the Tour de France will start from Les Gets. Well-known to mountain bikers (the World Championships were held there in 2022), the pretty Alpine resort will kick off a 15th stage during which you'll need to have plenty of breath. The Col de la Forclaz-Montmin is on the programme. So allow yourself a break at its belvedere for a bird's-eye view of Lake Annecy before setting off again for Saint-Gervais, at the foot of Mont-Blanc. If you want to reach the highest peak in the Alps, this village resort, with its well-preserved heritage and traditions, is the ideal place to stop. And its thermal baths, renowned for the many benefits of their waters, set the well-being at the summit in a magnificent green setting.

Courchevel, star of the Alps

En 2023, les cyclistes du Tour de France font escale à Courchevel, la station prisée des 3 Vallées, dans les Alpes avec l'ascension du Col de la Loze.

The regulars call it Courch' and they come and go summer and winter as connoisseurs, just like the Tour de France caravan which is visiting the Savoyard resort for the 4th time. Welcome to the pinnacle of top-of-the-range skiing in the Alps, at the heart of the Three Valleys ski area. Courchevel tops the list not only for the size of its ski area (Méribel and Val Thorens are its famous neighbours) but also for its range of hotels (no fewer than 5 mountain palaces , from the Apogée to the Cheval Blanc, not forgetting the K2 Palace, Airelles and the Hôtel Barrière Les Neiges) and restaurants. So, with its 6 hamlets and the surrounding area, the resort has a lot to offer. Take a selfie at the top of La Saulire, take a stroll down to Lac de la Rosière, cycle down the Bike Park, spend the night in the Lacs Merlet refuge or hike through the heart of the Vallée des Avals... You're going to love it!

Full steam ahead in the Vosges

Point culminant du massif des Vosges, le col du Grand Ballon est au programme du Tour de France 2023.

Between the Lorraine plateau and the Alsace plain, the Vosges massif lives up to its reputation: a perfect blend of nature, wide open spaces, traditions and local produce, crafts and fine cheeses. Between the Grand Ballon d'Alsace and the Petit Ballon, via the famous Col de la Schlucht, the Tour de France 2023 will be taking a break from the normality of the mountains, with a new finish on the slopes of the Markstein, in the welcoming family resort of Marlstein Fellering. In the heart of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park , you can enjoy bucolic hikes, tobogganing in the mountain pastures, paragliding with a view, and mountain biking (or mountain bikes) in a landscape of absolute serenity. And for those with a sweet tooth, July is the peak of blueberry season (and the season for tarts in the farm inns).

And (finally) Paris.... and the Olympics!

Comme chaque année, le Tour de France se termine en apothéose par la remontée des Champs-Elysées à Paris.

Will the riders be in Olympic form for the triumphant finish on the Champs-Elysées on 23 July 2023? Just one year ahead of the 2024 Olympics in Paris , the route will certainly provide a magnificent prologue to the sporting event. Starting in Saint-Quentin en Yvelines, all the future Olympic venues in the Yvelines département will be on the peloton's final route. A gigantic loop will join the Colline d'Elancourt (where the mountain bike events will take place), the Golf National in Guyancourt and the Château de Versailles , which will host the equestrian events and part of the modern pentathlon competitions. A prestigious line-up of finishers for a Tour de France 2023 that's sure to be at the top of its game!
