12 Interesting Facts and Secrets About the Eiffel Tower

Explore the history, science, and secrets of Paris' most famous landmark.

tour eiffel under 26

The Eiffel Tower — or, la Tour Eiffel — has long been one of the world's most recognizable landmarks, symbolizing the romance and ingenuity of the City of Light .

Designed as the centerpiece of the 1889 World's Fair, the Tower was meant to commemorate the centennial of the French Revolution and to show off France's modern industrial prowess on a world stage.

And that it did. The tower's construction, finished after two years, two months, and five days, was considered a marvel of precision and speed. Gustave Eiffel's civil engineering firm used 7,300 tons of iron and 2.5 million rivets , and the result stood triumphant over the Champs de Mars, receiving more than two million visitors during the fair.

The Tower’s now-famous silhouette has been  emulated around the world  in places like Las Vegas, Prague, Tianducheng, China, and, of course, Paris, Texas. The design wasn’t without its detractors , however — a "Protest against the Tower of Monsieur Eiffel,” signed by the likes of Guy de Maupassant, Alexandre Dumas fils , and other well-known artists, was published in the newspaper Le Temps before the project’s completion. The letter argued that the tower would be “a gigantic black factory chimney, its barbarous mass overwhelming and humiliating all our monuments and belittling our works of architecture, which will just disappear before this stupefying folly.”

In defiance of such protests, the Eiffel Tower did see the light of day and has stood the test of time. It remains one of the most visited monuments in the world, welcoming almost seven million visitors a year and more than 300 million people since its debut. It has changed over the years, with the addition of lighting, fresh coats of paint, and numerous installations that have come and gone.

And there’s still more to this landmark than meets the eye. Despite the incredible number of people who have visited since it opened, La Dame de Fer still has a few secrets to share.

There’s a penthouse apartment at the top.

Gustave Eiffel reserved the uppermost level of the tower for himself, where he hosted famous guests like Thomas Edison in a private apartment that he designed. The space has since been transformed into a recreation of Eiffel's office, complete with wax figures of himself, his daughter, and Edison, and it's open for the public to tour.

Gustave Eiffel didn’t design the tower.

While the tower is named for Eiffel, it was actually Maurice Koechlin and Emile Nouguier — two engineers who worked for his company — who designed the structure. They also commissioned French architect Stephen Sauvestre to work on the appearance of the project in order to quell public concerns about the harsh, utilitarian nature of the original design. They ultimately beat out more than 100 other projects in a contest to choose the main attraction of the World's Fair.

The Eiffel Tower was supposed to be torn down after 20 years.

The tower was built with the intent of showing off France's industrial prowess during the World's Fair, but the plan was to tear it down after 20 years. However, Eiffel cleverly put a radio antenna and wireless telegraph transmitter in the tower. After proving radio’s usefulness to the government in 1910, Eiffel was granted a 70-year extension to his lease. By 1980, of course, the tower had become an indelible symbol of both Paris and France, and it was in no danger of demolition.

The Eiffel Tower was almost destroyed during World War II.

In August 1944, as the Nazis were losing control of occupied Paris, Adolf Hitler commanded his generals to level the city. Plans were drawn up to mine the Eiffel Tower with explosives. Thankfully, Allied troops swooped in before the order could be carried out. Subsequent air raids over Paris caused significant damage, but the Eiffel Tower survived the war intact.

The Eiffel Tower is a cousin of sorts to the Statue of Liberty.

As sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi was designing “Liberty Enlightening the World”, he called upon his mentor, Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, to design the statue’s internal framework. After Viollet-le-Duc died in 1879, Bartholdi turned to Eiffel and Koechlin. They proved their iron expertise with Lady Liberty before moving on to the Iron Lady.

The Eiffel Tower has been home to both a post office and a theater.

The tower has been home to several businesses throughout the years, many of which are now gone. These include the newspaper “Le Figaro”, which had an office on the second floor for six months during the 1889 World's Fair, a post office tucked into the first floor, and a wooden theater on the first floor designed by Sauvestre.

The Eiffel Tower doubled as a scientific laboratory.

Eiffel, an avid scientist, housed a meteorology lab on the tower's third floor. He was known to perform studies in physics and aerodynamics there, even building a wind tunnel at the foot of the structure. Eiffel opened the doors of the laboratory for other scientists to use for their experiments as well.

The Eiffel Tower moves.

The massive iron structure is wind resistant and will sway during a storm. Wind isn't the only thing that can make the enormous tower move, though — the heat of the sun causes the iron to expand , making the Tower grow a few centimeters during the summer months. The tower will also lean an average of six inches away from the sun, as the one side facing the direct light heats up faster than the other three sides.

The Eiffel Tower is covered in the names of scientists.

The names of French scientists and engineers working in the 19th century were not forgotten by history — not only are they attached to several Parisian streets, but 72 of them are also engraved on the Eiffel Tower. The tributes were painted over in the early 20th century, but thanks to a restoration effort in the late 1980s, they are once again visible. Eagle-eyed visitors can see names like Foucault, Dumas, and Perrier cut into the iron surrounding the tower's first floor.

It takes a lot of work to keep the Eiffel Tower looking good.

Every seven years, workers apply around 60 tons of paint to the tower. This not only keeps La Dame de Fer looking good, but it also helps keep the iron from rusting.

The Eiffel Tower’s sparkling lights are copyrighted art.

The Tower’s first light show coincided with the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in 1925. Automaker Andre Citröen financed a 200,000-bulb show that featured a shower of stars, alternating Zodiac symbols, comets, and (naturally) his car brand’s name at the finale. Another show, featuring 336 yellow-orange spotlights, came sixty years later , but the now-famous sparkling light show, consisting of 20,000 bulbs, first lit up the night sky New Year’s Eve 1999 to ring in the new millennium. While the Tower itself is in the public domain , its illumination is protected by copyright under French law . However, don’t call your lawyer just yet — this only applies to pictures taken for professional use. You’re free to share any personal pictures of the Eiffel Tower and its lights as you please.

There’s a Champagne bar at the top.

If you're brave enough to climb the stairs to the top of the tower, reward yourself with a glass of Champagne from the Champagne Bar . There's nothing like a glass of bubbly with a spectacular view.

  • MONUMENTAL TOUR CÉLÈBRE EIFFEL: a unique electro show at the Eiffel Tower

a unique electro show at the Eiffel Tower with Michael Canitrot to mark the centenary of Gustave Eiffel's death.

Monumental eiffel tower.

To mark the centenary of Gustave Eiffel's death, the Eiffel Tower has teamed up with artist Michael Canitrot for a unique artistic collaboration, offering a rediscovery of the monument through a unique fusion of heritage, electronic music and artistic performance. On December 27, 2023, the anniversary of Gustave Eiffel's death, this audio-visual concert will be broadcast on television and social networks. This collaboration brings to a close an exceptional year punctuated by events paying tribute to Gustave Eiffel and his work.

After the success of five sold-out dates for his Monumental Tour project, including performances at Nancy's Place Stanislas in front of more than 22,000 people and the first date in Italy at Genoa's Palazzo Ducale in front of more than 10,000 people, DJ and producer Michael Canitrot closes 2023 on a high note with this unprecedented performance in the heart of the Eiffel Tower.

For this exceptional show, Michael Canitrot will present an unprecedented artistic performance on the monument: a spellbinding DJ set oscillating between melodic techno and progressive house, accompanied by a grandiose light show with the participation of several guest artists including the "Spectre" choir, Yana Mann, mezzo-soprano singer, Ablaye Diop contemporary dancer passionate about electronic music and Yann Dulché, pianist fusing electro beats and classical notes. Award-winning actor Philippe Torreton will lend his voice to Gustave Eiffel, offering a moving interpretation to guide spectators on this sonic and visual journey. An original creation that puts the monument in a new light, while paying tribute to Gustave Eiffel's audacity and creative genius.

tour eiffel under 26

The "Monumental Tour célèbre Eiffel" show will be broadcast on December 27, 2023, the anniversary of Gustave Eiffel's death, at 9pm as a preview on the Youtube and Facebook pages of Michael Canitrot and the Eiffel Tower, before its televised broadcast on the CSTAR channel at 10:50pm. Lasting 50 minutes, the program will then be broadcast on C8 and available for replay on MyCanal, the Canal+ group's channel platform.

How the Eiffel Tower Will Feature in the 2024 Paris Olympics

Paris Olympics

Planning a trip to Paris this summer? You’re not alone — an estimated 15.9 million people are expected to visit France during this year’s Olympic and Paralympic games, which will be held from July 26 through September 8, not to mention the 10,500 athletes who will be there competing for the gold.

Needless to say, you should be prepared to see the City of Lights transformed into one big stadium for every sporting event from breaking (aka break dancing, which will be making its official debut as an Olympic sport) to beach volleyball. Paris’ “games wide open” concept aims to make the excitement of the games accessible to everyone by setting the city’s famous monuments, including the Eiffel Tower, as the backdrop for the events.

Exactly 100 years since Paris hosted the Olympics in 1924, the city is bringing the games to life in a new way that’s sure to be exciting if you’re there for the events. It could add an extra layer of complexity if all you want to do is climb to the top of the Eiffel Tower (or take the elevator up), but scaling the monument is still a must for your visit.

Whether you’ll be in Paris to see the games or simply experience summer in the city, we’ve got your guide to visiting the Eiffel Tower during the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic games right here.

The Eiffel Tower is going for the gold

Eiffel Tower

Just in time for the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics, the 20th paint job of the Eiffel Tower — the last one was about 55 years ago — will be complete. Changing the tower’s color from “Eiffel Tower brown” to “yellow brown” started in 2019 but was delayed due to the pandemic, rust, and the presence of lead in the old paint.

All these issues aside, you’ll get to see a gilded Eiffel Tower if you’re visiting Paris during the games this summer, and likely for many decades to come. It’s also the color the man who built the tower — Gustave Eiffel — originally chose, and it hasn’t been this shade since 1947.

So it’s nice to think of this €60 million repaint job as a return to the Eiffel Tower’s roots.

Fun fact : Gustave Eiffel recommended that the structure be repainted every seven years. What would he say if he were alive today and knew that this is only the 20th time it’s been repainted since it opened?

To create the impression of uniformity, the yellow-brown color is applied in three shades, with the darkest at the bottom and the lightest at the top. But don’t think this paint job has been as simple as slapping on a new coat of paint — it’s taken a crew of 55 professional painters to cover 2.5 million square feet with the new color.

Winning athletes will take a piece of the Eiffel Tower home

Here’s an interesting fact — whenever the Eiffel Tower undergoes maintenance, pieces of metal from the original structure are removed and stored in a warehouse.

So when it comes to letting the 2024 Olympic medalists take part of the Eiffel Tower home with them, it’s not as hard as you’d think.

Metal offcuts from 1889 have been used to make all 5,084 gold, silver, and bronze medals designed by Chaumet, an elite French jewelry house that’s old enough to count Gustave Eiffel and Napoleon’s family as clients.

Another unique feature of the Paris 2024 medals is the addition of the Eiffel Tower in the design on the back of the medallions.

Since 2004, all medals feature the Greek goddess Nike flying into the Panathinaikos Stadium in Athens, but Paris organizers managed to get permission to include the Iron Lady in this scene.

What events will be held at the Eiffel Tower?

Eiffel Tower

Beginning in May, a four-month Olympic celebration like no other will be happening across France. It all starts with the Olympic Torch Relay, when 10,000 torch bearers will carry the flame across 65 French territories and more than 400 cities, arriving in Paris in time for the opening ceremony on July 26.

While the top of the Eiffel Tower seems like the obvious place to install the Olympic Torch, technical limitations due to the tower’s antennas prevent it from being placed there. Still, the Iron Lady will host the flame until the closing ceremony on Aug. 11.

The Eiffel Tower will also host the Olympic men’s and women’s beach volleyball and the Paralympic men’s blind football events. A more than 12,000-seat outdoor arena will be located at the foot of the tower, which will give spectators in person and watching on TV a picturesque view of the Eiffel Tower and École Militaire just across the Champ de Mars.

The architecture firm Populous and engineering group Egis have been in charge of constructing Paris’s Olympic village, ensuring that all 38 venues are built sustainably by using a combination of existing and new structures.

What about the Eiffel Tower stadium? It’s only temporary and will be taken down without a trace after the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic events officially end, with the closing ceremony of the Paralympic games in September.

How else will the Eiffel Tower be featured during the Olympics?

Eiffel Tower

Since many of the Olympic and Paralympic games are happening outdoors, the Eiffel Tower will be a constant backdrop.

The judo and wrestling events at the Champ de Mars Arena and the fencing and taekwondo competitions at the Grand Palais will give athletes and spectators a magnificent view of the Eiffel Tower. Road cyclists departing from nearby the Trocadéro Gardens and marathon runners will also get a passing glimpse.

Are any Olympic events accessible without a ticket?

Living up to its motto “games wide open,” most of the Paris Olympic events happening in the streets and along the Seine River will be free to watch.

This includes the triathlon, marathon, and cycling events, and even the opening ceremony on July 26, which will take place right on the Seine. Ticket holders will have seats in the stands along the river, but you can watch the celebration on one of the giant screens set up around the capital without a ticket.

More tips to watch for free : Throughout the Olympic and Paralympic games, you’ll find fan zones set up around the city. These are open spaces equipped with giant screens, so you can stop and watch the sporting events while exploring Paris’s other attractions.

Will the Eiffel Tower be open during the Olympics?

Eiffel Tower Tour Group

Although it will be flooded with sports fans, Paris will still be Paris for anyone visiting the city for the Louvre, the Arc de Triomphe, and, of course, the Eiffel Tower. Our guided climbing and elevator tours will be running as usual, but be sure to book your spot in advance as we’re anticipating a busy summer season.

What’s the best way to get to the eiffel tower during the olympics.

Olympic organizers are looking to keep Paris’ carbon footprint in check during the games, so many areas will be closed to cars. Instead, visitors are encouraged to walk, cycle, or take the metro.

Metro prices have increased to €4 per ride, but you can buy a Paris 2024 pass during your trip that costs €16 per day.

If you prefer getting around by bike, take advantage of the expansion of the Vélib’ Métropole bike-sharing program and the 55 miles of new cycling lanes that have been added around the capital.

Start making plans for the Paris 2024 Olympics

Whether you’ll be in Paris this summer for the Olympic and Paralympic games or to see the Eiffel Tower for the first time, you should book your tours and accommodations soon.

Paris may still be Paris during the games, but prices are rising and hotels are filling up fast. Don’t miss your chance to stay in a hotel with a gorgeous view of the Iron Lady, dine in Le Jules Verne restaurant, or take any of our exciting Paris tours .

However you choose to visit, you can expect to have a wonderful time. Yes, there will be crowds. Yes, it will likely be hot. But we’re making history here with the first Olympics in Paris in the last century — and that’s incredible! We can’t wait to welcome you while you’re here to experience the tower itself, whether you take the elevator or climb the stairs to the top.

Having trouble choosing? We wrote a pros and cons guide to taking the elevator vs. the stairs , but in honor of the Olympics, I’d have to say, go with the guided climb if you can’t decide. It’s not quite an Olympic-level workout, but you’ll feel like a champion when you reach the second floor!

AVONDALE, La. (AP) — Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry held onto a share of the lead Friday in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, with the Irish duo shooting a 2-under 70 in alternate play in the PGA Tour’s only team event.

The teams of Davis Thompson-Andrew Novak, Ryan Brehm-Mark Hubbard and Aaron Rai-David Lipsky matched McIlroy and Lowry at 13-under 131 at TPC Louisiana. They will play best ball Saturday and close with alternate shot Sunday.

Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, the 2022 winners, were a stroke back with Callum Tarren-David Skinns, Nick Taylor-Adam Hadwin, Zach Johnson-Ryan Palmer, Luke List-Henrik Norlander and Corey Connors-Taylor Pendrith.

McIlroy and Lowry, who opened Thursday with a best-ball 61, overcame Lowry's mid-round putting woes to close with consecutive birdies. Lowry missed two short birdie putts and a makeable par putt.

“I was just trying to keep him as positive as possible and remind him that I’m here and I’m here to back him up in any way that I can,” McIlroy said.

Lowry rebounded with a long par-saving putt on No. 4 and blasted out of a greenside bunker to inches on the No. 8 after a mammoth drive by McIlroy.

“I missed a pretty short one on 18 and then another one on the second,” Lowry said. “I started to get a little bit into myself, but to roll that one in (on the fourth hole) was nice, and to play the last few holes the way we did was really nice too.”

Rai and Lipsky held a one-shot lead heading into the 18th hole when Lipsky hit a wild hook that landed out of play. Lipsky was able to make a bogey putt that helped the team retain a share of the lead.

“It was nice for me to make that putt after I double-crossed that drive off the tee,” Lipsky said, “That was wasn’t fun, I’ll be honest.”

Cantlay and Schauffele had the best round of the day with a 67. They were tied for the lead heading into 18th but Cantlay’s tee shot found the water, leading to a bogey.

Record crowds turned out for the first two days, which tournament officials attributed to the presence of McIlroy, the world’s No. 2 ranked player who has been enjoying the city’s cuisine. Earlier in the week, he admitted he was planning a quick visit to Bourbon Street in the city’s iconic French Quarter, but as of Friday that had not occurred.

“Maybe this afternoon could be the time,” he joked after his morning round.

Tesla Autopilot

Tesla autopilot is again under nhtsa investigation after doubts over recall remedy.

Avatar for Fred Lambert

Tesla Autopilot finds itself once again under NHTSA investigation after the agency is now doubting the effectiveness over the 2-million vehicle “recall” last year.

As you may remember, Tesla and NHTSA announced a new “safety recall” of all Tesla vehicles equipped with Autopilot in North America last December.

The recall marked the conclusion of the NHTSA’s years-long investigation into crashes of Tesla vehicles on Autopilot into stopped emergency vehicles on the highway.

The “fix” to the “recall” is again an over-the-air software update .

In the defect notice, Tesla made it clear that it doesn’t agree with NHTSA’s findings of improper driver monitoring leading to these accidents, but it agreed to add more warnings and alerts when drivers are using the Autopilot features – hence the recall.

Now, a few months later, NHTSA seems to be having doubts about how effective the recall has been after new crashes have been reported and the agency was made aware of some concerns about the “remedy”.

NHTSA decided to open a new investigation. It wrote in the notice:

Tesla filed Recall 23V838 to address concerns regarding the Autopilot system investigated in EA22002. Following deployment of the remedy in Recall 23V838, ODI identified concerns due to post-remedy crash events and results from preliminary NHTSA tests of remedied vehicles. Also, Tesla has stated that a portion of the remedy both requires the owner to opt in and allows a driver to readily reverse it. Tesla has also deployed non-remedy updates to address issues that appear related to ODI’s concerns under EA22002. This investigation will consider why these updates were not a part of the recall or otherwise determined to remedy a defect that poses an unreasonable safety risk.

The agency says that the new investigation covers all Tesla vehicles in the US with Autopilot – just over 2 million vehicles.

Electrek’s Take

The original recall always felt like a compromise. The fact that Tesla didn’t agree with NHTSA’s findings and that the actual recall mainly consisted of mild increases in alerts looked like significant compromises on both sides.

I think they have a problem because the use of the in-car camera requires the latest computer. I have an early Model 3 and I can't use the in car camera for sentry mode live viewing due to having the original computer. I believe the same is true for the Model S around this time which had AP but no inside facing cameras either.

So, any solution solely dependent on the cameras for AP/AS will need to consider these cars that have AP/AS but not the latest tech.

Now, it looks like NHTSA is trying to push further.

I’m not sure what they mean by drivers having to “opt-in”. It might be due to some owners not having accepted the driver monitoring through the cabin camera? They would have to approve it to enable any change to the driver monitoring through the camera in the first place.

Honestly, the driver monitoring through the cabin camera is fairly strong now. You can’t look away from the road for more than 3 seconds without getting an alert. There’s an unfortunate way to bypass that, which I don’t want to popularize even though it’s widely known.

That might be part of what NHTSA is investigating now.

Grace Kim opened a four-stroke lead Friday in the LPGA Tour’s JM Eagle LA Championship, shooting a five-under 66 in tricky afternoon conditions at Wilshire Country Club.

A stroke ahead after an opening 64, Kim had an eagle, four birdies and a bogey to get to 12-under 130. The 23-year-old Australian patiently worked her way around the tree-lined layup, trying not to get frustrated with the bumpy greens.

“I think the less thoughts, the better,” Kim said. “Obviously, during the afternoon round today, we’ve got poa annua greens so just have to stay patient with them. You can kind of see how it can get bumpy, so working with the course and not getting too wrapped up around putts not going in.”

Maja Stark was second after a 69, also in the afternoon.

“I feel like maybe not taking everything so personal because they are a little bit wobbly,” Stark said. “Especially late. Like the whole day pretty much the ball has been wobbling because there has been so many people walking on it.”

The Swede finished second last week in Texas in the Chevron Championship, two strokes behind top-ranked Nelly Korda in the first major of the year. Korda withdrew Monday , a day after her fifth straight victory.

Defending champion Hannah Green of Australia shot a 69 to join Germany’s Esther Henseleit (68) at six under. Denmark’s Kristine Pedersen (67) and American Auston Kim (71) were five under, and Irvine’s Rose Zhang (69) topped the group at four under.

She started play Friday on the back nine, rebounding from a bogey on the par-three 12th with the eagle on the par-five 13th and a birdie on the par-four 14th. On 13, she hit a 5-wood to 10 feet. She added birdies on Nos. 3, 6 and 7 on the second nine.

“I think I’ve got to breathe a little bit,” she said. “I did get a little bit nervous on my back nine, so making sure I don’t rush too much and just staying in the present.
