Barcelona to Rome
15 days | from la vida loca to la dolce vita, enjoy a slice of the good life from barcelona to rome..
Lose yourself in three of Europe's most enchanting countries. From the vibrant streets of Barcelona, travel into the heart of the picturesque Spanish Pyrenees, then discover Provencal food and world-class wines as you frolic with Europe’s high rollers in the French Riviera. Feast on breathtaking sights in the cliff-top towns of the Cinque Terre, see master works of art in Florence and marvel at the leaning Torre de Pisa. Call into beautiful Siena then conclude this European adventure in the ancient city of Rome.
Trip overview
- Spend your free time in Barcelona visiting Gaudi's modern basilica, La Sagrada Familia – a Gothic masterpiece that embodies the city’s artistic and progressive heart.
- Hike in the majestic Spanish Pyrenees mountains, revelling in the fresh air, panoramic views and an exhilarating sense of freedom.
- Explore the idyllic Provencal landscapes of southern France and gain an understanding as to why this part of the world is so adored by artists.
- The Leaning Tower may be Pisa’s most iconic image, but there’s so much more to discover – The Piazza dei Miracoli and Pisa Baptistry are masterpieces in Medieval-Italian architecture.
- Enjoy plenty of free time in Rome to discover the ancient Colosseum, stroll through Vatican City and gaze up towards the gods inside St Peter's Basilica.
- Less time spent travelling; more time to explore each destination. The primary means of transportation on this trip is by train. Trains are a fast way to cross long distances, allowing you to avoid traffic jams and arrive right into the city centre. They are comfortable and all have toilets, however, can sometimes be quite busy. Please note that you'll have to carry your own luggage on and off the train, so make sure it doesn’t exceed our weight and size recommendations. You can find specifics under ‘Packing’ in the ‘Essential Trip Information’ section.
- Europe is steeped in majestic old buildings, and often there are no lifts or escalators, particularly in some train stations or hotels. You may have to carry your bags up and down stairs, but the trek will be worth it.
- Don’t let the heat keep you from exploring the world! Summer temperatures can be very high (over 40°C), which can make things uncomfortable. It’s important to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat, and drink plenty of water.
- Hotels in Europe often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together. In some cases, bathroom facilities will be shared rather than ensuite.
- On this trip you must pack as lightly as possible because you will be expected to carry your own bag and although you won't be required to walk long distances with your luggage (max 30 minutes), we strongly recommend keeping the weight under 15kg / 33lb. Most travellers carry their luggage in a backpack or suitcase, although an overnight bag with a shoulder strap would suffice if you travel lightly. Smaller bags or backpacks with wheels are convenient although we recommend your bag has carry straps to accommodate the cobbled streets, uneven surfaces, stairs and steps you are likely to encounter while carrying your luggage. You'll also need a day pack/bag to carry water and a camera etc for day trips.
Welcome to Spain! Barcelona's quirky character and fabulous Catalan cuisine mixes seamlessly with a ground-breaking art scene, Gothic architecture, superb dining and a non-stop nightlife, making it a city you won't soon forget. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 7 pm today – you can arrive at any time before this. If you arrive early, use free time to get your bearings of Barcelona. There are plenty of galleries, cafes and historic corners to keep you busy. Gaudi's bizarre La Sagrada Familia Basilica is not be missed. As there's not much time in Barcelona, we suggest you arrive a few days early so you can get under the skin of this great city. The heart of Catalonia prides itself as a gastronomic centre and so this evening, perhaps venture out to taste the reputation for yourself. You could take a tapas crawl through rustic Catalan dishes in the funky neighbourhood of El Born.

If you would like to visit La Sagrada Familia, it’s best to pre book your tickets before the tour. On this trip the best time to visit is before the group meeting today, ideally in the morning or early afternoon.
Travel north today by train and climb into the Spanish Pyrenees, which form a mighty barrier between the Iberian Peninsula and the rest of Europe, arriving in the small town of Ribes de Freser (approximately 2 hours). This is your base for next two days. Beautifully placed Ribes de Freser is a low-key town situated at the confluence of three different rivers; Freser, Rigard and Segadell. The town is not only an important tourist centre in this part of Pyrenees, but it’s also well known for its mineral water and milk products. Make sure you sample these, perhaps in your free time during the rest of today. The town is a great place to relax with the views of beautiful Pyrenees Mountains in the background. In the evening, perhaps head out for dinner with the group.
Today, enjoy stunning views from a cogwheel train ride into the Nuria Valley. This train line was first opened in the 1930s and connects Ribes de Freser with Queralbs, making a spectacular and magical snaking journey up to the small ski town and pilgrimage site of Nuria. It crosses viaducts, travels past dramatic cliffs, through tunnels, forest and waterfalls, finally arriving at 2000 metres above sea level after one of the most magnificent rides in the Pyrenees. Along with the cogwheel train journey, you will find time to stretch your legs on a hike in the scenic surrounds. Take to the hills for a day of hiking in the Pyrenees and be prepared for some steep ascents. Climb up through the forest to a fantastic viewpoint of the mountain peaks (weather permitting). Don't forget your camera, as the alpine scenery is spectacular. Return to Ribes de Freser in late afternoon. Tonight it's time for an included paella dinner.
- Pyrenees - Cogwheel Railway to Nuria Valley
- Pyrenees - Hiking in Nuria Valley
- Ribes de Freser - Paella Dinner
On today's hike please be prepared for some steep sections on uneven and rocky terrain. Please make sure you bring sturdy trainers or light hiking boots. Feel free to opt out of the hike if you prefer to take it easy upon arrival at the final stop of the cogwheel railway.
Continue your adventure across the French border today with a combination of a train journey and private transfer to Carcassonne (approximately 4.5 hours). The stunning medieval French city of Carcassonne looks like it's straight out of a classic fairytale and is famous for its 53 watchtowers and double-walled fortifications. The first walls were built in Gallo-Roman style with later additions made in 13th and 14th centuries, making it the biggest and most beautiful medieval construction in Europe. For good reason, this World Heritage-listed fortress is the second most visited tourist site in France after the Eiffel Tower. There’ll be plenty of time to explore and uncover the memorable castle and ramparts, crossing the medieval stone-arched bridge and navigating the cobbled streets that form a spider’s web through the town. You'll have plenty of time to explore and uncover Carcassonne’s secrets. Chateau Comtal, a 12th-century fortress within Le Cite, which offers archaeological exhibits and a tour of the inner ramparts, is certainly an interesting option for a free afternoon. This evening, if weather permits, watch a golden sunset over this medieval landscape.
- Carcassonne - Chateau Comtal Entrance - EUR10
- Carcassonne - Saint Nazarius Basilica - Free
Leave Carcassonne behind today and take the train into the French region of Provence, through heartland scenery that has long attracted the brushes of Impressionist painters, settling in the town of Arles (approximately 3 hours). Once a provincial capital of ancient Rome, Arles is now famed for inspiring the paintings of Van Gogh, which can be seen at the local gallery that takes his name. On arrival, take a walk around this town stepped in Provençal culture and immerse yourself in the picturesque landscapes that surround you. There’s also an included trip to see the beautiful double rows of arches of the Arles Amphitheatre in the afternoon, an ancient Roman arena still in use after 1000 years. Later, what better way to round off the day than a leisurely stroll, relax, and a coffee or ‘pastis’ at the shaded terraces of the atmospheric outdoor cafe that once paid host to the famous painter.
- Arles - Amphitheatre Visit
Enjoy a free day in the town of Arles. Perhaps follow the Van Gogh trail to see sites that the artist drew on as subjects for his paintings, finishing at the Vincent Van Gogh Foundation to browse the changing exhibitions of the Post-Impressionist painter, as well as temporary exhibitions of other famous artists. Discover Gothic architecture in a walled city where the Pope once took refuge, uncover an ancient Roman necropolis and theatre, or stroll past an ancient multi-storey aqueduct. You could also head outside of the town to the Camargue Nature Park, a beautifully bio-diverse region, and cycle among pink flamingos that frolick in sandy reed beds. The Antiques Museum, Arlaten Ethnographic Museum and Reattu Museum back in town also provide lots of culture to discover. Otherwise, you might simply relax by the Rhone River and watch the world go by. A wander around the town at night becomes an art history lesson, with scenes recognisable from famous artworks like ‘Cafe Terrace at Night’.
- Arles - Reattu Museum - EUR8
- Arles - Arlaten Ethnographic Museum - EUR8
- Arles - Musee de Arles Antique - EUR8
- Arles - Vincent Van Gogh Foundation - EUR10
- Arles – LUMA Art Gallery - Free
Take the train to Nice today, which should take you around five hours. The star of the Riviera and a great base from which to explore the rest of the Cote d'Azur, Nice boasts both public and private beaches, with countless opportunities to relax. Your afternoon and evening are free but try not to miss the flower and evening markets on Place Saleya. Take some time to explore Nice’s old centre, walking its maze of staircases and lanes, fine Baroque churches, and the famous Promenade des Anglais – a hot spot for street theatre and local artists. The Old Quarter is a warren of alleyways, boutique shops, cafes and restaurants just waiting to be discovered.
Today is free for you to further explore Nice as you like, there's even the option of taking a day trip to the glitzy city of Cannes, which only costs around EUR16 by train. The famed film festival host is a place of sun, sand, style and shopping, while the old town still maintains a Provencal feel. You might like to visit the cliff-top village of Eze, known as 'The Eagles Nest' which is just a few kilometres outside of Nice. This medieval town is a true gem – it’s vaulted, narrow streets are filled with art galleries, workshops and gastronomic restaurants and at the top is a ruined medieval castle commanding one of the most beautiful panoramas on the Cote d'Azur. Back in Nice there are museums to explore, tiny shops in the retro neighbourhood of Vieux to browse, beaches to lounge on, scenic gardens to discover, and delicious French fare to feast on.

This morning after breakfast, spend the day travelling by train across the Italian border to the once important naval base of La Spezia, now the gateway to the gorgeous Cinque Terre, or ‘Five lands’ in English (approximately 6 hours). The name comes from the five tiny villages – Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore – whose position, wedged into a series of coves between sheer cliffs, makes it one of the highlights of the whole of Italy. On arrival in La Spezia there won't be too much time to explore yet, but after checking into your hotel perhaps get your bearings of the area with a short walk around the pedestrian zone on Via del Prione to the gardens along the harbour, or head out for dinner with the group. Afterwards, you might like to relax and rest up before the walk along the famous Cinque Terre route tomorrow.
This morning venture out on the footpaths of Cinque Terre (Five Lands), a region of Italy famed for its coastline and pastel villages. The footpaths that run between the villages were once the only way to travel in the region, and take you through olive groves, vineyards and on to idyllic vistas. Walking the entire network of paths can take around five hours (12 kilometres in total) and you will need a good level of fitness. You can also choose to walk just a few sections, which will still unveil a great amount of majestic scenery. Some sections of path can be difficult, as there are challenging uphill stretches, narrow paths, steep cliffs and foot bridges. Please remember to bring comfortable footwear such as trainers or light hiking shoes. It's also possible to take the train between any of the villages or back to the group's base whenever you want. After working up an appetite, take advantage of the foods of the Liguria region with a pesto class – focaccia is also a speciality in this area and makes a great start to lunch. The rest of the day is free for you to enjoy at your own leisure. In the evening, there's no better way to recover from your day of walking with more indulgence in delicious Mediterranean food.
- Cinque Terre - Day Trip, including Cinque Terre Pass
- Cinque Terre - 'Il Laboratorio del Pesto' Making & Demonstration - EUR25
- Cinque Terre - Sea Kayak Hire - EUR10
- Cinque Terre - Church of St Andrea in Levante - Free
- Cinque Terre - Coastal Cruise - EUR41
Due to recent landslides in the area, it is currently not possible to walk the Via dell'Amore and the coastal section between Manarola and Corniglia. There are alternative inland routes, however these are of a higher physical rating and involve steep ups and downs. It is possible to take the train or a bus for these sections. Due to safety reasons some sections of any path can be closed at short notice. Please remember to bring comfortable footwear such as trainers or light hiking shoes.
Depart Cinque Terre today and catch a train to Pisa (approximately 1 hour). Divided in two by the River Arno, the heart of Pisa is the Santa Maria quarter on the north bank. Here there'll be ample time for you to visit the world-famous Leaning Tower, as well as the Duomo (Piazza dei Miracoli, once the largest in Europe) and Pisa Baptistry. Please note that it's not always possible to climb the tower, although you'll have plenty of time to take pictures and explore the city. The tower was built in the 12th century, but its foundation was on shifting sand and clay, meaning that it now leans at an angle of 4 degrees (after restoration and stabilising work). Wander the shopping streets, from high-end boutiques to speciality book and antiques stores, and perhaps enjoy lunch and an aperitif in a backstreet restaurant before returning to the station in the afternoon and taking the train to Florence (approximately 2 hours). After checking in to your hotel, join your leader for quick orientation walk. The rest of your evening is free to explore the city of the Renaissance.
- Pisa - Leaning Tower of Pisa - EUR27
After breakfast head out into Florence, one of the most culturally rich and beautiful cities in Italy, known to many as the beating heart of Tuscany. The Medicis, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Brunelleschi, Machiavelli, Donatello and Michelangelo all lived in Florence at the height of their creative reign. It's impossible to see everything in this Renaissance wonderland, so take your time and enjoy it. Perhaps visit the Uffizi, one of the world's oldest art galleries, or walk up to Piazzale Michelangelo, which is set on a hill on the south bank of the Arno River, to take in beautiful views of the city – a lovely way to while away the day. There are plenty of sights to see during your time in Florence – don't forget to visit Michelangelo's David, housed in the Galleria dell'Accademia. As the evening comes around, join the locals in taking a passeggiata, a leisurely socialising stroll, perhaps between piazza Beccaria and piazza della Repubblica.
- Florence - Medici Chapels - EUR17
- Florence - Bargello Museum - EUR14
- Florence - Baptistry, Museo Opera del Duomo, Giotto Bell Tower and Brunelleschi Dome - EUR30
- Florence - Pitti Palace, Gallery of Modern Art & Palatine Gallery - EUR19
- Florence - Aperitivo Time! Urban Adventure - EUR77
- Florence - Foodies Walk Urban Adventure - EUR79
- Florence - Palazzo Vecchio - EUR12
- Florence - Pitti Palace (Boboli Gardens, Museo Argenti, Costume Gallery, Porcellain Museum) - EUR15
- Florence - Uffizi Gallery - EUR24
- Florence - Accademia - EUR17
The individual Florentine State Museums have slightly different opening times and closing days between them but the website firenzemusei.it has everything you need to know about all of them, including the option to purchase tickets. We suggest that you pre-book your visit to the Uffizi, as this museum experiences enormous queues (up to 5 hours) all year round. Your leader can be of assistance. Make your reservations for these museums for any time today.
Leave Florence early in the morning by train for a day tour to Siena (approximately 1.5 hours). Surrounded by olive groves and the vineyards of Chianti, Siena is one of the most idyllic cities of Tuscany. Wander the tiny alleyways and lively piazzas, and search out the unique Piazza del Campo, a grand fan-shaped piazza built on the site of the old Roman forum, and where the famous Palio horse race takes place (twice annually in mid-July and the end of August). Siena has an energetic and friendly student atmosphere thanks to one of the oldest universities in the world being located here. Be sure to visit the small but stunning Siena Cathedral, and see the statue of the Capitoline Wolf which was brought here by Romulus and Remus, the mythical founders of Rome. You will be back in Florence for the evening, which is free to enjoy as you please. Food is also a major part of the city's identity, so perhaps explore some of the culinary delicacies on offer from across Tuscany. Regional specialities are noted for their simplicity and fine flavour, and the use of high-quality olive oil, cannellini beans and fresh herbs.
- Siena - Day Trip
- Siena - Duomo di Siena - EUR15
- Siena - Torre del Mangia Climb - EUR10
In the morning, take the train to Rome (approximately 2 hours), and remember that while here, the best attitude is ‘when in Rome’! Join your leader on an orientation walk around the city, where you can see some of the iconic sights such as the Colosseum and Arch of Constantine, the Forum (centre of ancient Rome), the Victor Emmanuel Monument, the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, Spanish Steps, Via Dei Condotti and Piazza Venezia. No visit would be complete without a trip to Vatican City and St Peter's Basilica, so check with your leader for options and tips on how to fit that in a day. Entry to the Basilica is free and there's a small charge to climb the dome for a panorama over the city. Use your free time to also visit the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel. Rome is packed full of restaurants and trattorias that cater to every taste and budget. Eating in trattorias will give you a chance to sample some Italian wines, with house choices usually very good and affordable. Head out in the evening with the group for a final farewell gastronomic fling.
- Vatican City - Vatican Museum - EUR22
- Rome - Galleria Borghese - EUR16
- Rome - Venezia Palace - EUR17

1. How Many Days to Spend in Italy and Spain
Generally speaking, it is necessary to spend at least 10 days in Spain and Italy to cover the top highlights. If you are visiting these countries for the first time and wish to explore the city highlights, you are recommended to spend at least 5 days in each destination. If you are a history enthusiast for ancient Roman ruins, Renaissance art, and historical landmarks, then you could spend more days in Italy.
For a more profound cultural immersion, a 2-week trip would be preferable to fully enjoy both countries without feeling rushed. Allocate 1 week to Italy for a relaxed exploration of its classic cities and another week to Spain, giving you the opportunity to explore its islands and capital city.
Extending your trip to 3 weeks would certainly allow for a much deeper and richer itinerary. We recommend spending 2 weeks touring Italy from north to south and reserving the final week for the best of Spain.
Let us know your available time for travel, interests, group size, budget, and any other preferences, and our travel consultant would create a customized itinerary just for you. Feel free to contact us .
2. Choose a Suitable Spain and Italy Itinerary
Here are two sample itinerary suggestions for Italy and Spain: a concise 10-day itinerary and a classic 14-day one.
Itinerary 1: 10-Day Concise Spain and Italy Tour (Time-Smart)
- Days 1–3: Madrid, Spain
- Days 4–5: Barcelona, Spain
- Days 6–8: Rome, Italy
- Days 9–10: Florence, Italy
For this itinerary, we have selected the most iconic travel destinations in Spain and Italy. You could explore the top attractions in these cities even with limited time.
Start your journey in Madrid by visiting the Museo Nacional del Prado, an impressive neoclassical building that houses exquisite masterpieces. Explore the stories behind the artwork with the help of your private guide. Next, head to the Palacio Real de Madrid to experience the splendor of the Spanish royal residence. Then, take a leisurely walking tour of the old town, making sure to stop for churros and chocolate. Consider taking a day trip from Madrid to Segovia, where you could visit the Alcázar de Segovia, which is said to have been the inspiration for Snow White's castle.
Your next stop is Barcelona , where you would be amazed by its architectural wonders, especially the works of Gaudí. Marvel at the enchanting Casa Batlló and the iconic Sagrada Família as you immerse yourself in a world of vibrant designs and captivating stories. Dive into the city's rich history by exploring the Gothic Quarter and don't forget to indulge in local delicacies at Mercat de la Boqueria.
While in Rome , seize the opportunity to explore iconic attractions, such as the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and other historical sites in Rome. In Florence , immerse yourself in the rich cultural scene by visiting museums and art galleries displaying masterpieces. Delight in a pizza and gelato-making class and get a taste of Italy's rustic charm by paying a visit to a family-run winery.
Itinerary 2: 14-Day Spain and Italy Family Tour
- Days 4–5: Valencia, Spain
- Days 6–7: Barcelona, Spain
- Days 8–10: Rome, Italy
- Days 11–12: Florence, Italy
- Days 13–14: Venice, Italy
For this family tour, we have added Valencia for a perfect blend of children's activities. Try a private walking tour in Valencia's historic center, followed by a unique paella cooking experience. Explore the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences with a bike ride and walking tour. Visit Europe's largest aquarium, the Oceanogràfic, and delve into scientific wonders at the Museo de las Ciencias Príncipe Felipe. Conclude your adventure at Gulliver Park for interactive fun inspired by the classic tale, Gulliver's Travels.
In Italy, we have added 2 days in Venice , where you could explore Piazza San Marco, admire the Grand Canal, and enjoy a gondola ride. Then, embark on a 4-hour island-hopping adventure in the Venetian Lagoon, visiting Murano, Burano, and Torcello. You may be captivated by glass blowers, colorful houses, and ancient history with the insights of a knowledgeable guide.
3. Step 3: Estimate Your Travel Costs
When comparing travel costs in Italy and Spain, Italy tends to be slightly more expensive than Spain, although the disparity is not significant. Both countries share many similarities otherwise. A fine 4-star hotel may cost about 200 USD per night in Italy, while it would cost about 150 USD in Spain. Traveling by train in both countries between the major cities would range from 30 to 100 USD depending on the distance.
Typically, our private tours in Italy cost about 500 USD per person per day, while a similar experience in Spain would be about 400 USD. These prices cover a comprehensive package of services, including airfares within and between the countries, accommodation in 4- or 5-star hotels, access to attractions, guided tours, and all necessary transport and private transfers.
Additionally, discounts of 30–50% are available for children under 10, ensuring a maximum-value, hassle-free travel experience for families and individuals.
4. Choose the Best Time to Visit
For the most favorable weather with fewer crowds in Italy and Spain, consider traveling during May, early June, September, or October.
In Spain, the summer vacation season typically runs from July to August. August, the hottest month, is generally not recommended due to high temperatures and increased tourist congestion. Many architectural sites may also undergo maintenance during this period, affecting the overall experience.
If cold weather is not a major concern for you, winter could also be a good time to visit, particularly for those seeking lower costs and fewer crowds. Both countries experience minimal rainfall during the winter months, offering a quieter travel experience. However, keep in mind that costs may rise during the Christmas period. Read more about the best times to visit Spain and Italy .
5. Decide Which Country to Enter First
Both Spain and Italy provide easy access to international flights from major cities worldwide. Your decision on whether to start your trip in Italy or Spain should be based on flight availability and convenience. For travelers flying from the USA, Spain is a bit quicker to reach by flight, taking about 1 hour less compared to Italy. Italy typically requires 8–9 hours to fly from New York to Rome.
6. Consider Transportation Between Spain and Italy
The most popular way to travel between Spain and Italy is by taking a direct flight. Major cities in Spain, such as Madrid and Barcelona, have direct flights to major Italian cities, such as Rome, Milan, Florence, and Venice.
The price for a one-way flight (2½ hours duration) from Madrid to Rome typically ranges from 50 to 200 USD for economy class. Prices could fluctuate based on the airline, season, and how far in advance you book your ticket.
Trains are not recommended as the journey takes more than 15 hours.

See Michelangelo's frescoed ceiling in the Sistine Chapel
One of the most important structures of the Catholic faith, the Vatican City’s Sistine Chapel is a must-see on a tour of Italy. Though the chapel walls have witnessed centuries of worship, it’s the renaissance ceiling paintings of Michelangelo that will leave you in awe.

Cruise your way through Venice
The charm found in the canals of Venice is nothing short of irresistible. Admire gothic palaces and postcard bridges whilst adrift in a gondola, gaining an understanding of life in a city that floats. Exploring a city by foot will never be the same after a trip to Venice.
Journey to the well-preserved ruins of Pompeii
An unfathomable history lesson is found in the archaeological ruins of Pompeii. Buried and preserved by the ash of a volcano eruption in the year 79, in this Italian town you will discover the progressive life of early Roman times as you walk within the parameters of an open-air time capsule of life on Earth.
Go shopping in Italy's fashion capital Milan
Armani, Gucci, Prada and Versace. These are some of the prestigious fashion brands that call the Italian city of Milan home. In between yearning through boutiques and department stores, stop to sample the city’s delicacies like breaded veal cutlet and ossobuco.
Our top 5 things to do in Italy
It's the moments of quiet stillness that take your breath away on a Trafalgar tour through Italy. Sitting in the calm halls of the Vatican. Floating on the canals of Venice. Standing beside the ruins of Pompeii.
Uffizi Gallery
The Tuscan capital is home to Uffizi Gallery, where the brushworks of art’s true masters are found. Names like Raffaello, Leonardo, and Michelangelo dress Uffizi’s grand pink walls, whilst internal courtyards leading to the Arno River will show you the building’s architectural brilliance.
Vatican Museums
A collection of Christian artwork that spans centuries and stirs the soul is found in Rome’s Vatican Museums. From the intricate ceiling by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel to the detailed Pope portraits from the 16th century to today, you will be lost for words once inside this blessed museum complex.
Doge's Palace
Home to the leader of Venice from its opening in 1340, Doge’s Palace summarizes the sparkle of this city. An opulent example of Venetian Gothic architecture and home to numerous historical works, this museum is a must when you visit Venice.
Best museums in Italy
The epicenter of the Catholic faith and the birthplace of art’s most renowned masters. Our guided tours of Italy will take you to the many museums found here, whether in the Sistine Chapel, by the canals of Venice or in the grand galleries of Tuscany.
The authentic carbonara experience will take place in Rome, covered in salty Pecorino Romano cheese. A simple dish inspiring heart-warming meal times, this pasta will connect you with Italy’s rich culinary customs - an impressive evolution from its supposed heritage as a coal-miner’s meal.
Pollo alla Cacciatora
Literally translating to ‘hunter’ in Italian, cacciatore offers an appreciation for Italy’s meals of days gone by. Typically a preparation of rabbit or chicken, it’s the simmering tomato stew that makes this dish so mouthwatering. Satisfy a genuine hunger and consume with hand-ripped bread.
Italy tours are best served with an oversized slice of tiramisu. Cementing this country's obsession with espresso, this cake of layered biscuits soaked in coffee is the perfect after hours pick-me-up before an evening stroll through the charming streets.
Best food in Italy
A date with Italian food will likely start and end with a slice of pizza. But it’s the menu items that we share with you in between that will take your appreciation to new heights; think cacciatore and Carbonara with a slice of tiramisu in between.
What to pack for Italy
A classic linen outfit
The Italians are famous for their equal parts glamorous and effortless dress sense. Look the part with a few ensembles featuring classic linens in navy and white.
A blank journal
With the wealth of inspiration tucked into every corner of Italy, you might find yourself compelled to write down notes or memories. At the very least to remember the traditional Italian recipes you learn.
With such a large expanse of space to explore, on some days, long journeys are unavoidable. The scenery will provide plenty of visual entertainment, while headphones can be used to listen to some local music or enjoy podcasts about Italian history, culture and politics when you're not enjoying the storytelling from your Travel Director.
A small blanket
When exploring the soul-stirring setting of Tuscany, a picnic may call. Come prepared with a small blanket to cover in wine and cheese.
Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes
A classic memoir that brought the romance of Tuscany to the world, there’s no better time to read this book than when venturing through the country yourself.

by Beau Ragland
assisted by Avo AI technology
Last Updated: 10/10/2023
Traveling across Europe is an experience unmatched in its appeal, and nothing quite encapsulates the spirit of exploration like a scenic train ride from Spain to Italy. At Voyista, we believe that the journey can be as memorable as the destination itself, and this is especially true when traveling by train.
While flights may be the faster option in terms of time, they fail to capture the essence of European travel - the opportunity to witness changing landscapes, the anticipation as you get closer to your destination, and the connection to the journey itself that you feel when you're literally on the ground. With trains, the journey becomes an integral part of your travel experience rather than merely a means to an end.
Why Choose a Train Over Flight?
When you travel by train, you get to immerse yourself in the changing geography of the land in a way that is simply impossible from a plane. From the luxurious green of the landscapes as you leave Spain, to the azure blue of the Mediterranean Sea, and then the rustic charm of the Italian countryside, you get to witness a diverse series of visuals up close when traveling by train.
Moreover, traveling by train from Spain to Italy is more sustainable than flying. At Voyista, we're committed to reducing travelers' carbon footprints by booking trains instead of flights whenever possible.
Experience Spain to Italy With Voyista
With Voyista, you are not alone in your travel adventure. A trip to Italy is too special to get wrong. Here's how to do it right. (San Gimignano, Tuscany)
I absolutely love Italy, for many different reasons. But I hate the way in which many Americans go about planning trips there. Survey after survey shows it is the number one dream destination for U.S. leisure travelers, but the way those travelers get their information and advice gives me nightmares.
Throughout the years I’ve heard people say over and over that “I was told to do this in Italy,” or “I was told not to do this in Italy.” By who? “A friend.” I have close friends who recently planned their entire 12-day trip on the basis of another couple they knew who gave them advice—after their first visit. I’ve heard of many people who skipped Rome because “we heard it was too busy, just another big city.” Or passed on Venice, one of the world’s most magical destinations, because, “I heard it was touristy.”
There are American tourists who say you should skip Venice. They are wrong.
It goes on and on, but suffice to say, I have been to Italy in the neighborhood of two dozen times, summer and winter, for food, wine, skiing, golf, hiking, cycling and more food, from north to south and east to west and islands too, and I know a lot about Italian cuisine, but I still ask real experts for advice every time I go. I specifically ask for advice on where to eat, what to see, and who to choose as guides. And by experts, I mean people how live in Italy, specialize in particular areas of travel, and know their subject matter.
“We get multiple guests a year who want to wing it,” says Cherrye Moore, owner of My Bella Vita travel. Moore moved to Calabria two decades ago after falling in love with the region on a visit, and opened a bed and breakfast, learning about what her visitors were looking for. Her company now specializes in planning trips—especially foodie and ancestry trips—to the area in Southern Italy where many Italian Americans trace their heritage. “They say, ‘My neighbor just showed up in their family’s hometown and it went great for them,’ or, ‘Our friends went to Italy last year and said we don't need a driver.’ It’s true that you can rent a car and drive to your family’s hometown, but that experience is vastly different from having a dedicated driver and a heritage specialist who has done research on your family’s history, who has already identified the home your grandfather was born in, and who has arranged meetings with locals upon your arrival.”

Anyone can tour the Vatican, but only the right guides can get you a private visit.
I just got back from an exploration of Turin followed by a weeklong hiking trip in surrounding Piemonte, Italy’s most prestigious wine region, which included multiple winery visits. For restaurants and guides and sightseeing in Turin I used an Italian-based travel specialist that is the choice of many of the best luxury travel agents/advisors in this country (the best travel agents are savvy enough to know what they do not know and regularly rely on local experts). For the hiking trip, I used an Italy-based active travel specialist that does nothing else, and does it with a food-centric spin. It was another fantastic Italy trip, one amazing day after another, featuring many meals, wineries and experiences I never would have found by myself, especially by asking random friends or watching You Tube influencer videos by people with far less Italy experience than myself.
“We don’t focus on stars or diamonds, we focus on really special one-of-a-kind experiences and lodging that lets you discover our Italy,” said Heather Dowd, who lives in Turin and along with her Italian husband Beppe Salerno. They run Tourissimo , the active travel company we used. We had several friends hiking with us who were on either their very first or second trip to Italy, and when we reviewed our experiences at the end for the trip, one place we stayed, an 18 th century castle turned boutique hotel, was the overwhelming favorite. It did not have whirlpool tubs or Frette linens, it did not have a concierge or room service, but it had excellent food and beautiful gardens in which we had an epic dinner. It had cooking classes, a great location, a fun aperitivo evening cocktail session, and most of all, incredible charm..
Everyone wants the perfect meal in Italy, but not everyone knows where the locals go to find it.
It was exactly what my first timers dreamed Italy would be like, and it was a place we never would have found online. It was perfect, and even in Italy not every place is, but the reality is that Heather and Beppe and their guides spend a lot of time behind the scenes visiting small hotels and vetting them, way more time than the people who rate their stays on booking websites. One of my friends was so impressed he is already planning an extended family hiking trip to Sicily with Tourissimo next year.
If you want to have an insider experience in Italy, and see the places locals go, you need a local insider to help you out.
“Our goal is for guests to experience Calabria like we do, so we’ve built experiences that aren’t available online,” said My Bella Vita’s Moore. “Nowhere else can you find a multi-course lunch hosted at Zia Pina’s or a picnic prepared and delivered by Signora Francesca. Lunch in the home of our friend, Chef Massimo, isn’t available on Google. When creating or reviewing experiences I always think of my sister in Texas. If she were visiting, would I take her here? If that answer is yes, I know we have a winner.” That is exactly the standard by which I’d like my Italy travels to be judged.
A trip to Italy is a beautiful, special, and almost sacred experience, so don’t screw it up by taking bad advice. I do not know every local specialist—and I hope to keep finding more—but I know several experts I would recommend for different kinds of travel. Or use a good travel advisor, something I recommend for all travel (Read my article Why You Need A Travel Agent More Than Ever here at Forbes ), and communicate with them to ensure they are on the same page in terms of sourcing these kinds of local experts. If they are good, they will already be familiar with several of these companies.
Active Travel
All of Tourissimo's cycling and hiking trips in Italy emphasize food and wine, which is how it ... [+] should be.
Italy has long been the dream destination of cyclists, with Tuscany atop the Bucket List for global road riding destinations. But for the past few years the fastest growing sector of cycling has been “gravel grinding,” and with hundreds of miles of its stunning unpaved “white roads,” Tuscany has also emerged as the world’s top travel spot for gravel lovers. There are also plenty of other amazing places to ride in Italy, including Piemonte, Sardinia, Puglia, the Lakes region, and many other areas. World class hiking abounds, especially the stunning Dolomites—a UNESCO World Heritage Site of beauty unmatched by most other mountain regions on earth. Beyond this there are the Alps in the east, the Cinque Terre, Sardinia, and many other great options.
Italy is so well known for cycling and hiking that every major active travel company in the world runs trips there. But for my last two active trips, one hiking and one biking, I chose a tour operator that is actually based there, founded by an Italian with a passion for cycling and food. Tourissimo may be Italian, but they cater to the American market, and founder Beppe Salerno worked for am American cycling company as a guide before realizing he could do the real Italy better himself—to me, the perfect startup rationale. Over the years since, Tourissimo has grown its library of offerings, with both with an array of scheduled group trips and private custom options. While they do mostly road riding, they are notably one of the only tour operators scheduling gravel trips, and can also arrange custom mountain biking itineraries, with years of expertise in cycling and hiking.
Superstar Chef Mary Sue Milliken has led about galf a dozen Chef's Cycling Tours in Italy for ... [+] Tourissimo.
In addition, Tourissimo has also been a pioneer in “Active Culinary Travel,” a hot new category I have written about here at Forbes (and for other magazines and newspapers). They offer an annual series of six group rides (and a hike) each hosted by an acclaimed chef like Mary Sue Milliken, an award-winning chef, restaurateur, cookbook author (five!) and co-host of the popular PBS cooking show Two Hot Tamales . She is also an avid cyclist and has led the Tourissimo Chef Bike Tours for several years, along with other big names. These trips are a unique option for serious foodies who also ride, while the other trips cater to just about anyone. Otherwise they offer several styles of trips, from Bici Basics for new riders to Ambitious Tours for the more hard core.
Tourissimo puts a focus on local, choosing small and often historic hotels that they have curated and vetted (like the castle I just stayed at in Piemonte), places that you would never be able to distinguish from hundreds of other non-chain options online. Same for restaurants, wineries, and all the other ways they take you behind the scenes and into their real Italy. Their Mission Statement? “We don't want to be the biggest adventure travel company. We want to design and run the best tours in Italy. We strive to be the most authentic and the most beneficial to local communities.” Fantastico!
Bellagio on Lake Como is one of the most famous destinations in Italy — and the perfect place for a ... [+] food-centric bike tour!
Bike It! Bellagio offers another insider biking experience on a much different scale, providing a great one-day experience for visitors to Italy’s most famous lake town. This bike shop on Lake Como is run by a former pro racer and his wife. They rent bikes (road, mountain and e-bikes) out, but also offer one-day guided tours with multiple food and drink stops. Given that the owner grew up here and knows everyone, it’s not surprising that the food and drink spots are insider picks. The shop sits near the iconic Madonna del Ghisallo climb, the most famous in the Giro di Lombardia, a race more than a century old, and several days a week the shop offers guided group rides with a climb of the pass, on road or e-bikes—Bianchi bikes of course!
There are scheduled tours Monday through Saturday, as well as wide range of customizable private tours. These are often taken by families with mixed ages, but for more aggressive riders they offer longer road tours, mountain biking and gravel riding, along with a wide range of less demanding e-bike tours, including some even more focused on food and wine. They also offer a handful of multi-day tours and can put these together as custom on demand, usually for groups, including an iconic coast to coast traverse of Italy. If you are a guest of one of the many stunning (and pricey) ultra-luxury hotels around Bellagio, and ask the concierge to arrange a bike tour, they are likely going to call this shop anyway (and mark it up) so just do it yourself.
Luxury Travel in Italy
From planning your entire itinerary with flights, hotels, and transfers to just booking the best tours, guides and VIP access (often to non-public highlights), it pays to use a top local specialist.
Last year I attended the annual Virtuoso Travel Week in Las Vegas, which has been called “the Oscars of the travel industry.” Virtuoso is the leading global luxury travel consortium, and many of the best travel advisors on earth belong, So does just about every top hotel, resort, safari lodge, cruise line, and luxury tour operator. Virtuoso CEO Matthew Upchurch was explaining the many advantages of using a travel advisor (I wholeheartedly agree) and something he said really stuck with me. He explained that with all of the new online tour booking companies, it was easier than ever to book a tour or guide in just about any destination on earth, but harder than ever to judge the quality. The caveat was that, “you can book a guide, but you can’t book my guide.”
One of Italy's greatest hidden gems, Turin was the nation's first capital and a Winter Olympic host. ... [+] It's worth getting a good guide if you visit.
The Vatican is the Vatican and the Colosseum is the Colosseum, so when you opt for a guided tour, what really matters and makes it a good, bad or great experience is the guide—and their special access, like a tour of the Vatican when no one else is there.
For my recent trip to Turin, I called Imago Artis Travel , an Italy-based luxury travel specialist. They are what is known in the travel industry as a destination management company or DMC, the same companies luxury travel agents call to arrange local details for their clients. There are great DMCs all over the world, and local knowledge is valuable everywhere, but many of them do not deal directly with travelers, while in Italy the best ones do.
I wanted a private day tour of Turin and its surrounding attractions for my wife and I, most importantly the Reggia di Venaria Reale, aka the “Italian Versailles” (one of two places in Italy with this lofty but accurate nickname). The guide they got for me was a licensed guide, and lifelong resident of Turin, and spoke excellent English, which was all good, but she was also an architect, which was great in a city where so much is driven by architecture. That’s not so easy to find on global tour aggregator website. Imago Artis also gave me a list of their favorite restaurant recommendations, which were spot on, then made my reservations for me. At a minimum this eliminates the language barrier of calling or the technology barrier of booking through often tricky (or non-functional) Italian restaurant reservation websites, but in many cases it also gets you a better table and instant VIP treatment—which definitely does not happen when I book myself.
Italy is rich in world-class crafts, and companies like Imago Artis can take you behind the scenes ... [+] to meet the makers.
Imago Artis Travel is a Virtuoso member, which means when you book through them, if you book your luxury hotel, you get extras like room upgrades, late checkout, spa credits etc., one of the big advantages of working with Virtuoso travel advisors. If you have a bigger budget than I do, they can handle all sorts of luxury transport, private jets, helicopters, boat charters, and also offer VIP Meet and Greet services at just about every airport in Italy. They can even arrange private security details. On a more accessible luxury level, they specialize in exclusive experiences, unlocking historic buildings and art collections not open to the public, and taking you behind the scenes with many artisans of Italy, from custom shoemakers to sculptors to jewelry designers. They know food, they know the guides, and I especially like their mission statement, “Our mission is simple: Getting You to the Heart of Italy.” That’s what it is all about.
Another top luxury DMC that is also a member of Virtuoso that I have used in the past with great success is IC Bellagio . They offer a similar array of luxury services and are very well connected, but they also specialize in Villa rentals as well as 5-Star hotels. Differentiating villas in Italy may be the single biggest challenge, more so than restaurants, with so many options and so few valid reviews. IC Bellagio has also boldly acknowledged the overtourism problems some of the most popular parts of Italy face, and are pushing “Slow Season Travel,” which varies in each of the country’s 20 regions but is something they are expert in. Last winter I went to Venice in the off-season, and it was spectacular, and I just traveled in a slow season to Piemonte. It was much, much better than fighting the crowds.
Skiing in Italy is awesome, and it's the best place in the world to stay in mountain rifugios — but ... [+] you need help for the perfect trip.
Skiing in Italy remains a bit under the radar for Europe, especially compared to France and Switzerland. Well, let the crowds go to other countries, because Italy has two different major ski regions, both of which have hosted the Winter Olympics, and the Games are returning to Milan and Cortina in 2026. The interconnected Dolomiti SuperSki lift and trail network in the Dolomites is arguably the largest “ski resort” in the world, and inarguably one of the most beautiful mountain landscapes on the planet. The towns are charming, the food is great, there are spectacular hotels from non-chain independent hidden gems to world-class luxury (Aman, Mandarin Oriental, Relais & Chateaux, etc.) and it’s cheaper than much of the rest of Europe. Did I mention the food?
I first went to the Dolomites to go hiking, and was so wowed I thought, “I have to come back and ski here.” I came back the next winter and skied, and the following year I got a group of friends together and went back. I have skied all over the U.S., and all over the world and never had the same compulsion to return to the same place immediately. That’s how good skiing in Italy is ( read much more in my Italy skiing piece here at Forbes ).
I’ve only used one company for ski travel in Italy and see no reason to switch gears, especially since the local logistics (a great guide/instructor, transfers, the best on-mountain meals and staying a couple of nights in the region’s unique on-mountain rifugios) is very hard to organize on your own. The company is Dolomite Mountains , a specialist in both resort ski vacations and backcountry touring trips (using skins and alpine touring or AT gear). They too are a U.S. facing company with mainly American clientele.
Like many active travel companies, they offer both group trip scheduled departure options and private custom trips to fit whatever you want. The group option is called the Dolomites Ski Safari and is a 7-day trip mixing stays in amazing rifugios with in-town hotels (4 and 5-stars on the Italian system) and includes all breakfasts and dinners, a full-time guide, ski pass, luggage transfers and more. Custom options include the same kind of trip for your own group, or anything you want, and while its name suggests local expertise—quite true—Dolomite Mountains also handles ski trips in the rest of Italy, like Courmayeur, and connected border regions of France, Switzerland and Austria, as many lift systems here know no national boundaries (ski with your passport!). They are also a Virtuoso member.
Calabria & Southern Italy
Many Italian Americans trace their ancestry to Southern Italy's Calabria, and if you want to visit, ... [+] make sure you do it right.
My Bella Vita travel focuses on this area, including both small group trips and custom privates. Their specialties include “Heritage Tours” for those interested in their ancestry, and a food focus for the rest of us. For instance, Taste of the South is a 12-day gastronomic journey through Calabria, Basilicata and Naples—the birthplace of pizza! Food & Wine of Calabria is an 11-daty trip and just what it sounds like.
These are some of the scheduled small group tours offered, but the rest of their business is private trip planning and custom options.
“Italy is deceivingly large, and travelers think two weeks is enough time to see everything. It isn’t,” insists Moore. “You can’t even experience all of Calabria in two weeks. Our team collectively spends about six months a year scouting new hotels, restaurants, and experiences in Calabria and we are constantly re-evaluating and tweaking our recommendations.”
There are some other Italy specialists I have not personally experienced, but that come highly recommended by some of my other experts:
My Bella Vita’s Cherrye Moore says, “ In Sicily, I recommend Lucia Davies of Sicily Tour , one of a trio of British expats who have lived in Siracusa, Sicily for decades.” A family-owned tour-guiding company based in Siracusa, they have nearly 40 years of experience on the island and create trips fostering cultural exchange between Italy and English-speaking visitors, specializing in small group and custom tours.
Food & Wine
Life is too short to go to Italy and not eat well.
Beppe and Heather Dowd of Tourissimo recommend Lazy Italian Culinary Adventures , a company that has also earned kudos from other travel industry folks I know. Owner Francesca Montillo grew up in Southern Italy where her father was greengrocer. An Italian-American cookbook author, she launched the company a decade ago, and she personally leads the tours. She does numerous scheduled tours to different regions each year, and also offers custom private itineraries.

Enchanted Landscapes
The tour is generally good. I wish though that more time are given to explore major places. Some places can be skipped already since there was nothing much to see.
Barcelona to Rome
Brilliant trip!.Because Intrepid do small groups we were able to get into the best locally run restaurants and really get to experience life like a local. We traveled by train and got to sit and chat with the locals (even picked up some top tips on where to go out) The tour leader was amazing, his knowledge of the 3 counties visited blew me away. He even booked us tickets to see Santana feat. Dave Matthews on the piano in a 2000yr old amphitheater in Nimes, something I would never had known about on my own. The tour was such a great mix of activities and free time. highly recommend.

Rome to Lisbon: Coasts & Countryside
I did Rome to Madrid on a shoestring. It was an amazing tour! We visited a lot of places but still had enough time to chill and relax. Highlights were Lagos, Lisbon and Grenada. Alhumbra is a must see! Our tour guide was incredible! Lalo was AMAZING! He was so helpful and full of energy that you couldn't help but be excited as well. He is such an amazing human being, it was a privilege to meet and travel with him! He gave us amazing orientation walks and is quite the photographer. All in all - an amazing trip!!
London to Rome (Start London, 15 Days)
The trip was more than I expected. My tour guide was Greg and he was spectacular. Very knowledgable about everything and didn't discriminate against anyone. The tour itself was fun, there was a a lot of free time which I didn't mind. Transportation was comfortable and the driver, Michele, was one of the best.

Mediterranean Highlights (13 Days)
Well organized. Great tour guide. Perhaps too many stops and places included. Optional tours sometimes not with money.
Mediterranean Flavors
We covered a lot of places and Billy did a great job preparing us before we visited and then at the sites. Madrid tour guide was poor hard to understand and unfriendly. Don’t use Ibis hotels due to lack of porters. Hard for elders to haul their luggage. Visit Portofino and only one Cinque Terre village. Train on/off too difficult and time consuming.

Meanwhile, Irish holidaymakers in Gran Canaria may soon be hit with a new tourist tax after Tenerife's move to introduce the fee.
The beautiful island, known and loved for its white sandy beaches, gets four million tourists every year.
But locals recently took to the streets in the capital protesting that tourism is destroying their economy.
The Canary Islands is now set to take on measures to control the number of people arriving by charging tourists a daily cost.
This latest proposal - known as eco tax - is part of a new tourism strategy being drafted by the government of Canary Islands.
Last week, Tenerife’s president Rosa Davila proposed the new plan and the island council agreed the idea would be moved forward.
Irish tourists in Tenerife will have to pay to get into the Anaga, the 12,188ft Mount Teide and Teno Rural Parks.
Now officials in Gran Canaria are considering introducing an entry fee to the popular natural monument Roque Nublo in a bid to control crowds of visitors.
The Roque Nublo, a volcanic rock surrounded by 26,000 hectares of park, attracts people from all over.
A report will be carried out to assess the scheme with the findings to be completed in eight weeks.

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.
Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!
If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.
The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.
However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

More than 2,600 seats are up for election in 107 English councils on Thursday.
Now, YouGov has made its final calls for some key contests using the MRP polling method after interviewing almost 9,000 people over two weeks.
Here, exclusively on Sky News, are the headlines...
People voting in local elections in England on 2 May will need to provide photo ID.
It is the second year the requirement has been in place - but in 2023, 14,000 people couldn't cast their ballot because they didn't take ID to the polling booth.
There are 22 different types of ID you can use - and if you don't have any of them, you can register for a Voter Authority Certificate.
Here's everything you need to know to avoid being caught out:
Around 600 people are blocking the entrances to offices of the Department for Business and Trade.
It is part of a protest organised by the Workers for a Free Palestine campaign group.
They say they are blockading sites involved in arms supplies to Israel, and are also demonstrating outside BAE Systems sites.
Police say three people have been arrested.
"We are policing a protest in Admiralty Place and Horse Guards Parade," a Metropolitan Police statement said.
"Officers have made three arrests after protesters blocked access to a building. Protesters must stay within the law."
In a statement, the Workers for a Free Palestine group said they were responding to a call "from Palestinian trade unions for workers around the world to mobilise on May Day in solidarity with Palestinian workers".
Staff in the trade department were sent a text this morning warning all entrances are closed "until further notice", one worker has told Sky News.
MSP Michelle Thomson tells Sky News she wants to see more of a contest in the SNP leadership race, but says she does have a preference for one potential candidate in particular.
Nominations have opened to find a replacement for First Minister Humza Yousaf, who resigned this week.
Two candidates - John Swinney and Kate Forbes - have said they are considering standing for the SNP leadership, but none have been confirmed.
Ms Thomson, an SNP MSP for Falkirk East, says she "would like to see other candidates as well".
"It's very important that democracy is aired for people on the ground who are members of the SNP," she says.
But she says she is urging Ms Forbes, who narrowly lost out to Mr Yousaf in last year's SNP leadership contest, to stand.
The former finance secretary is "the brightest political brain I've seen and certainly of her generation", Ms Thomson says.
Ms Forbes has told Sky News she is considering entering the race.
As has former deputy first minister and former SNP leader Mr Swinney, who said he is giving "very careful consideration" to the prospect of throwing his hat into the ring.
Ms Thomson describes Mr Swinney as an "extremely experienced politician" with a "huge amount to offer".
You can read more on the potential leadership contenders here:
Scrapping National Insurance payments would be a "ticking time bomb", shadow education secretary Bridget Phillipson tells Sky News.
In the budget in March, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt indicated plans to eventually scrap National Insurance contributions - a move Labour branded "reckless".
He later admitted to Sky News it "won't happen any time soon".
Ms Phillipson says it would open up a "£46bn black hole".
" More than 50 days on, we've had nothing from the government about how they're going to fund it, how they're going to pay for it, how all of that will work," Ms Phillipson says.
"It is just not good enough for ministers to set out this kind of bombshell with no plan, no detail around any of it."
Shadow education secretary Bridget Phillipson tells Sky News the government has been "slow to act" on knife crime - following an attack that left a 14-year-old dead yesterday.
"The government have been slow to act where it comes to cracking down on knife crime," she says.
"We've been pushing for further legislation, for further measures to stop young people... having access to knives and to take action on violent crime overall.
"That, sadly, isn't what we've seen happen."
Earlier this morning, Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch told Sky News London's mayor Sadiq Khan was "failing" to tackle knife crime ( see post at 7.47am ).
Responding to the comments, Ms Phillipson says knife crime is a "nationwide issue", adding that now is not the time to "make political points".
Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch tells Sky News she is "pleased we've finally seen one person going to Rwanda".
Her comments come after the first failed asylum seeker was sent from the UK to Rwanda on Monday under a voluntary scheme.
This "shows the point about Rwanda not being safe to be untrue because people are volunteering to go", Ms Badenoch claims.
The scheme is for those who have gone through the asylum process and had permission rejected, rather than for migrants who have illegally entered Britain by crossing the Channel on small boats.
It is separate to the powers set out in the controversial Safety of Rwanda Act, which became law last week.
Ms Badenoch says after "so many obstacles" put in the way of that legislation, "the scheme is working".
She cites comments made by the Irish government as evidence the Safety of Rwanda Act is working as a deterrent.
"The scheme is working, as we've seen with the comments from the Irish government as well," she says.
"This is something that we need to do in order to help police our borders."
You can read more on the Ireland-UK asylum seeker row here:
Business Secretary (and equalities minister) Kemi Badenoch is calling on people to give examples of organisations issuing "incorrect guidance" on single-sex spaces.
She tells Sky News the aim is to tackle "confusion" on the matter.
"What I have noticed as equalities minister is that across the board there is a lot of confusion about when single-sex spaces are protected," she says.
Rather than the government carrying out a "huge investigation that will cost lots of money", she is asking people to send examples if they think the guidance in their institution is wrong.
Asked whether that could invite transphobic responses, she replies: "No, not at all. And it shouldn't be."
"All we're saying is that if you think the guidance in your institution is wrong, let us know... and then we can help provide clarity."
Ms Badenoch's "call for input" comes a day after the health secretary announced plans to update the NHS Constitution to "ensure that biological sex is respected".
Read more on that here...
Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch tells Sky News the London mayor is failing to tackle knife crime - following an attack that left a 14-year-old dead yesterday.
She was responding to a question about how high a priority tackling knife crime is for the government - with official data showing it increased across England and Wales in 2022-23.
She replies it's a "very high priority", but says policing powers are devolved to the London mayor.
"Sadiq Khan is failing," she says, adding that he is "not taking this issue seriously enough".
"I think we really do need to put the spotlight on what the mayor of London is doing on knife crime, on policing the streets, on public order, " she says.
"He has the biggest police force. He has the one that has the most resources. He should be using them to keep people safe."
ONS data shows that in 2022-23, the West Midlands, led by Tory mayor Andy Street, recorded the highest rate of 178 offences per 100,000 population .
Bin collections, potholes, local schools and town centres: Ruth Davidson and Jess Phillips were right in our Electoral Dysfunction podcast last week when they talked about these issues being the political meat of local elections when it comes to what voters want to talk about on the doorstep.
But it's true too that this set of local elections is hugely significant as the final big ballot test we're going to get before a general election.
Some 28 million people across England and Wales have the option of casting a vote - be it for councillors, mayors, London Assembly members or police and crime commissioners - and Labour is using this polling day as a dry run for a general election, testing their arguments, focusing their spending and attention in local battlegrounds where they need to win for general election victory.
And while much of the attention in the run-up to polling day has been on whether the results will trigger a full-blown leadership crisis for the Tories, what's perhaps more relevant to you the voters is what these elections tell us about the prospect of a majority Labour government.
