2021 KTM 85 SX [Model Overview]

2021 KTM 85 SX

The 2021 KTM 85 SX: The Competitive Edge In Junior Motocross

Model overview.

  • Specifications

The 2021 KTM 85 SX is the final step in Junior Motocross, and to provide the best chances at a win, KTM makes two versions of the bike for the 2021 lineup . Both are powered by the same 85cc two-stroke single, producing over 20 HP, with the only difference between the two being wheel sizes. For the shorter rider, the 85 SX 17/14 gives a 17 inch front wheel, with a 14 inch rear. The 85 SX 19/16 similarly gives the taller rider a 19 inch front wheel and a 16 inch rear.

This Austrian-made bike is equipped much more like a fully-fledged supercross bike than a motocrosser, but it will still be competitive in both categories. A full 6-speed manual transmission is tuned specifically to get the power to the dirt, and also delivers a slightly more tame powerband once into the middle revs for long distance cross country racing. WP XAct suspension is once again the suspension of choice.

KTM’s designers have also not only given the 85 SX series a 6-speed transmission but have also included a wet, multi-disc hydraulic clutch, designed by FORMULA racing. This is a race-grade product and lets the junior rider get an excellent feel for the bite point and lightning fast gear changes.

The 2021 KTM 85 SX 17/14 starts at $6,099 USD / $6,899 CAD, while the 85 SX 19/16 starts at $6,299 USD / $7,099 CAD.

2020 KTM 85 SX

Two variants of the 85 SX open up options for young teens.

tour minute 85 sx

For 11- to 15-year-olds, the KTM 85 SX models offer a range in tire sizes (and consequently seat heights) to suit the formidable growing stage of the tween and teenage years. This motocrosser is specified for young riders who have more experience and are looking to race competitively in junior classes. The 17/14 wheel size is perfect for those looking to transition from the 65cc class while the 19/16 model adds a super-mini step before moving onto full-size machines. A chrome-moly steel frame (much like those seen in KTM’s larger dirt bikes) houses its 85cc single-cylinder two-stroke engine and fully adjustable WP Xact suspension assists in tackling the technical tracks that the aspiring racers will come across.

2020 KTM 85 SX 19/16 And 17/14 Reviews, Comparisons, And Competition

The 85 SX won Dirt Rider ’s 2016 85cc MX Shootout for its smooth, broad, controllable power with great over-rev and overall didn’t have any flaws. DR did note that this is a bike geared for top-level racers, so trailbikes would be recommended for new young riders.

Multiple manufacturers are taking into account the younger riders, so competition for the 85 SX is pretty fierce: Husqvarna TC 85 19/16 and 17/14, Kawasaki KX85, TM MX 85, Suzuki RM85, and Yamaha YZ85 .

It took extreme levels of ingenuity to fit the race-winning formula of KTM’s bigger 2-strokes into a compact 85 cc engine. The super-compact powerplant is fitted with a 6-speed gearbox and delivers class-leading power and rideability throughout the entire rev range. The power valve plays a key role in tailoring power delivery to suit track conditions and rider ability, ensuring that the only rider surprised by the incredible performance is the competition.

The cylinder on the KTM 85 SX has a bore and stroke of 47mm and 48.95 mm respectively. It features a sophisticated power valve system, which controls both the exhaust valve and the sub-exhaust ports, giving the bike excellent torque and power delivery. This translates into significant midrange performance, reducing the need to overwork the clutch in loamy or sandy conditions. An adjuster screw allows the opening time of the power valve to be adjusted to suit rider preference and track conditions.

CRANKCASES AND ENGINE COVERS:

The crankcases are manufactured using a high-pressure die-cast production process, keeping wall thickness to a minimum while retaining strength and durability. The design of the cases is very compact and aims at positioning the shaft arrangements as close as possible to the center of gravity, contributing to better handling.

TRANSMISSION

The KTM 85 SX features a lightweight 6-speed gearbox, engineered to take a beating. The gear ratios have been developed to perfectly match the characteristics of the engine, with easy and precise shifting allowing the rider to slot in the next gear quickly and confidently. The gearbox also features a driveshaft that uses a screw to secure the front sprocket, and a diaphragm spring instead of a circlip, to ensure the front sprocket remains firmly in place. As with all KTM SX models, the KTM 85 SX transmission has a “no-dirt” gear shifter which, like the footpeg design, prevents dirt build-up.

Ultra-durable thanks to modified clutch components, the 2024 KTM 85 SX allows riders to actuate the clutch level with ease, thanks to the FORMULA hydraulic system, which conveniently ensures that play is always compensated for. This means the clutch “bite” point remains consistent throughout the ride and under all conditions.

The KTM 85 SX features a lightweight crankshaft with optimized balancing for reduced vibration and oscillating mass. As light as the crankshaft is, the rotational inertia has not been compromised, ensuring maximum torque and revs, as well as easy rideability.

The KTM 85 SX is fitted with a race-proven MIKUNI TMX carburetor with a 38 mm flat slide. This provides buttery smooth and controllable power up to the rev limiter, while the angle of the intake manifold reduces any overflow of fuel. It’s also less sensitive to different altitudes and temperatures, so you can pin it wherever, whenever.

Maintaining the optimal engine temperature is crucial to ensuring consistent horsepower throughout the ride. The KTM 85 SX features radiators that are positioned for a lower center of gravity. Their design matches the shrouds perfectly and offers a great slim feel to the ergonomics.

By using CFD technology (computational fluid dynamics) together with clever coolant circuit routing, the innovative system ensures the optimum engine temperature for the highest performance, no matter what the conditions.

The radiators also feature special protectors that serve not only as protection from flying rocks and debris but also as a brace that disperses energy around the radiators in the event of an impact.

The exhaust system has been designed to perfectly match the engine’s power characteristics and contributes to the outstanding all-around performance and rideability. The header pipe is produced using a 3-dimensional stamping process.

Once the components have been shaped, they are robot welded to ensure the highest level of quality, consistency, and durability. The lightweight and compact silencer guarantees that sweet 2-stroke sound and falls safely within the noise limits for racing.

The frame on the KTM 85 SX is a scaled-down version of the multi-championship-winning full-size frames. Made from hydroformed chromium-molybdenum steel tubes that are robot welded, the frame is pinpoint accurate, ensuring the highest levels of consistent quality and flex characteristics.

The one-piece swingarm is manufactured using a gravity die-cast production process for exceptional strength at the lowest possible weight. It offers a wide range of adjustments for the rear wheel, allowing for a shorter wheelbase on tighter, twisty tracks, or a longer wheelbase for greater stability on longer, more choppy tracks. The swingarm’s chain measurement markings are visible from above, making adjustment simpler and more accurate.

Not only does this lightweight aluminum subframe provide rear fender stability and strong support, it also adds to the overall rigidity and handling of the KTM 85 SX.

The 2024 KTM 85 SX features a ‘big wheel’ Excel rim combo powder coated in black, with a 19-inch front wheel and a 16-inch rear. These are mounted on CNC-machined hubs and wrapped in MAXXIS MX-ST tires which deliver exceptional straight-line stability and excellent traction when chasing the holeshot.

FRONT SUSPENSION

The KTM 85 SX front fork features the same suspension technology found in the full-size motocross range. The WP XACT fork with AER technology consists of a split fork design with a capsuled air spring in the left leg and the trusted oil damping system in the right leg.

The preload adjustment is extremely simple and can be adjusted by using the single air pressure valve and supplied air pump. The design also allows for easy access to compression and rebound clickers.

REAR SUSPENSION

The KTM 85 SX boasts a WP XACT rear shock absorber with a sophisticated PDS (Progressive Damping System). This design offers a high progression rate and an excellent response to uneven terrain – just like the bigger bikes. It also allows an impressive 305 mm of rear-wheel travel and is fully adjustable for preload, compression, and rebound.

Bringing this little screamer to a stop is down to the Formula brake system with radial calipers – four pistons in front, two in the rear – with lightweight Wave brake discs. The system is the benchmark in terms of controlled action and braking performance, ensuring powerful and confident braking.

The KTM 85 SX airbox is a masterclass in design, optimizing the tiny space available to deliver the best possible performance, while still maintaining the highest level of filter protection. The air filter is easily accessed, without tools, by removing the left side panel. The Twin Air filter and filter cage design feature a simple, secure mounting system, making filter maintenance quick and easy, which means less time in the pits, and more time winning races.

Holding approximately 5.2 liters of pre-mixed fury, the tank is perfectly shaped to be small and slim to allow for easy and uninhibited rider movement, while still providing enough range to cover a full race at full throttle.

ERGONOMICS & COMFORT

Hang on tight – the KTM 85 SX features a strong, lightweight, tapered aluminum handlebar, with a specifically shaped bend to suit its overall ergonomics. Additionally, the bike comes standard with ODI lock-on grips, which include a vulcanized grip on the right side and a lock-on grip on the left that does not require glue or wire for mounting.

The KTM 85 SX has “no-dirt” footpegs, which have a simple but effective self-cleaning system that ensures the footpegs return to their original position, providing complete control in all conditions.

Providing the perfect blend of grip, durability, and comfort, the 2024 KTM 85 SX seat does everything you’d expect it to while showing off it’s it’s undeniable READY TO RACE and ‘orange’ heritage.

BODYWORK & GRAPHICS

Rocking an all-white and orange color plastics combination and orange seat cover – not to mention bold, black, orange, and purple graphics – the 2024 KTM 85 SX lines up behind the gate with pure race-winning intent.

2018 KTM 85 odd sag recommenation

By Jasons , July 3, 2017 in Motorcycle Suspension

Recommended Posts

I just picked up a 2018 85SX for my son this weekend. He loved the bike and even though he is small for it. I am not sure how much he will want to ride his 65 now. He was jumping everything that he does on the 65 in a couple of laps on the bike so he was definitely comfortable. It seems to have a little bit of a kick in breaking bumps and acceleration bumps, otherwise looks good. My question is around sag setting and spring selection. Stock is a 4.0 spring and the manual says it is good for 99-121 lbs. And 3.5 for less than 99lbs. Geared up weight. He is 11 and weighs 65 lbs with no gear so I figure 75 with gear(need to weigh his gear) So I put on a 3.0. I also have a 3.5 to try.   KTM recommends 120 sag and 30 free. This seems odd for 305mm travel (I would expect more like 101-102). Last year they recommended 100mm for 300mm travel which seems to make sense. For '18 they have 10mm more front travel, 5mm more rear travel and the shock is laid down 3 degrees, steering angle is the same so I would expect same or less sag recommended. They also have HS compression settings backwards in the manual, so maybe a typo, 120 vs 102. With the 3.0 and 120 sag we had 45 free which would indicate he needs a lighter spring. I had the forks set at the lowest pressure 58psi (stock is 73psi) Air fork on the 85 this year. I took it for a spin and it felt way soft in the rear compared to the front. I am way too heavy, but thought it would feel soft but balanced, maybe my height put me toward the back.  Thinking to try the 3.0 at 102 sag and see if that gives 30 free and then choose up or down on the spring rate based on normal more free-ligher spring, less free-heavier spring.   As usual for me this is way long, so my question is... Does anyone have any technical reason they would recommend so much sag? Thanks, Jason

I think it's a typo

Ball park starting static sag is 10%, race sag is 25%. So 300MM travel is 30mm static and 75+mm race. Then you adjust/change to suit the rider. some like the numbers flopped all about. I suggest keeping an eye on the shock and see if he bottoms, if he does, try the 3.5. I'd keep static at the 10% area and adjust the race to suit.

My Wp spec sheet says 120mm with 30 static, that's from the factory.

Thanks for the replies, they seem to align with what I was thinking.

Karlace, that is what my manual says too, it just seems way out from everything else I have seen and experienced.  120 mm puts the sag at ~40% and there isn't anything else about the chassis that I can find that would suggest such an extreme setting.

I've seen ktm recommend 90mm of sag on a big bike, they are sometimes a tad crazy

With that much sag, it sounds like stiffer springs are needed. It is more then likely they could be "off" by 1-2 spring rates rather then the 120mm being wrong. PDS on big bikes is around 112-116.

Did you ever sort this out on the bike?

The sag measurement seem way off with 120mm rider sag. The bike does not feel balanced

Just picked a 50SX 2018 for the little one and KTM recommends 80mm of SAG so the same 43% of travel...I don't know what was recommended in 17 (same chassis) but it seems to be a lot. Looks like a new engineer figured out something different...or made a mistake !

We are running 120mm.  He was complaining the bike was twitchy and got headshake with less sag.  I talked with a guy from KTM at a WORCS race that does the training for service and asked if it was a misprint and he said it wasn't and that they do a lot of testing to come up with the settings.

Thanks for that we'll aim for 30mm and 120mm.

Just one more question the manual has the high speed compression as softer the further it is wound in, I've not seen this before as it's normally the other way round.

Did you find this to be accurate?

It seems to have the comfort, sport and standard settings backwards.   It also states turn in for more damping and out for less.  I would start with the standard setting and try in and out and see if he likes it better.

U do turn in for more damping

Wondering what your thoughts were with this setup?  How'd it work for y'all?

2012 KTM 85SX 17/14 Review

The full-size pro-bike

No absolute beginners are to be found pootling around among the ranks of ambitious, young MX riders any more. This is where future champions fight for victory and the best chance for a place on the podium is on the 85 SX – as demonstrated convincingly by Henry Jacobi’s 2010 world championship title. The 85 SX masters the toughest MX tracks with unperturbed ease. The grown-up KTM mini-crosser combines fully-fledged MX technology with perfect controllability.

2012 KTM 85SX 17/14 Features and Benefits

New for 2012:

» Reworked 43 mm USD front fork made by WP (215 mm travel) » New 2-component handlebar grips » New, lighter CNC machined front hub » New front axle (22 instead of 17 mm) » New handlebars made by Renthal » New radially mounted 4-piston front brake calliper » New wheels with aluminum spoke nipples » New graphics

Engine with 6 gears and intake and exhaust control

The 85 SX’s sensational engine delivers its power over a wide rev range thanks to its intake membrane and intricate exhaust control. The six-gear transmission always has the right gear ratio available. No coincidence that the 85 SX is the king of holeshots in junior MX race series.

Frame, wheels and suspension components

The 85 SX’s lightweight and sturdy chassis consisting of a chrome-molybdenum steel frame with bolted-on aluminium subframe, 43 mm (1.69 in) fully-adjustable, upside-down fork from WP now with optimised tuning and WP PDS shock absorber featuring adjustable rebound and compression damping, masters even the toughest of MX courses without demanding too much of the rider.

Focussing on optimisation of braking power and application, the front brake on the 85 SX has been equipped with a newly developed, radially mounted, four-piston brake caliper from Formula. In conjunction with the wave brake disc, the performance of the brake system has been improved even further.
