Moses Mabhida Stadium
Club: Amazulu FC | Opening: 2009 | Capacity: 56,000 seats
History and description
Moses Mabhida Stadium was built to serve as a playing venue for the 2010 World Cup .
The stadium officially opened on 29 November 2009 with a match between Amazulu and Maritzburg United (0-1).
During the World Cup, Moses Mabhida Stadium hosted five first round group matches, the round of 16 match between the Netherlands and Slovakia (2-1), and the semi-final between Spain and Germany (1-0).
After the World Cup, capacity of the stadium was reduced from 70,000 (or 62,760 during the World Cup) to 56,000 by removing the third tier.
The stadium’s most characteristic feature is its Y-shaped 106-metres high arch, inspired by the South African flag, and which holds up the Teflon-coated glass fibre membrane roof.
How to get to Moses Mabhida Stadiume
Moses Mabhida Stadium is located toward the north of the city of Durban, almost at the coast of the Indian Ocean. It lies about 3 kilometres from Durban’s central business district and a little less from Durban’s central railway station.
The stadium is situated almost adjacent to the M4 motorway that runs along the coast. If coming from the north, leave the M4 at the Blue Lagoon turn off, turn right under the bridge, and shortly after left onto Masabalala Yengwa Avenue (NMR). Continue until you reach the stadium.
From the central business district, the stadium can be reached by following Masabalala Yengwa Avenue north.
If using public transport, the stadium can be reached with the Metrorail trains that run from Durban central railway station. Take a train on either the North Coast Line or KwaMashu Line. Get off at the next station Moses Mahbida. Trains run rather infrequently.
An alternative are the People Mover buses that run along the beaches. Take a bus on the Northern Line, which brings you to the Suncoast Casino, a 5 to 10-minute walk from the stadium.
Address: 44 Isaiah Ntshangase Rd, Durban 4001
Amazulu Tickets
Tickets for Amazulu FC matches can be bought online via Computicket , or through the Computicket sales outlets , which include the Shoprite and Checkers stores.
Tickets are not always available at the stadium on the day of the match, and it is therefore advised to buy in advance.
Tickets typically go for a flat price of R$40.00 for all stands, though at times can be slightly higher for some stands at high-profile matches.
Amazulu play most of their matches at Moses Mabhida Stadium, but at times move to a smaller venue.
Stadium tours
Moses Mabhida Stadium offers guided stadium tours that include the changing room, players tunnel, mixed zone, hospitality facilities, and the stadium’s art gallery.
There are two types of tours available: all access tours that last 90 minutes and shorter express tours. All access tours run Tuesday to Sunday at 12:00 noon and 2:00 pm. Express tours run on weekdays every hour between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm and on the weekends between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm.

Moses Mabhida Stadium
Top choice in Durban
Durbanites are proud of their state-of-the-art stadium, constructed for the 2010 World Cup. Resembling a giant basket, it seats 56,000 people, and its arch was inspired by the ‘Y’ in the country’s flag. Visitors can head up to the arch in a SkyCar , puff up on foot (550 steps) on an Adventure Walk or plunge off the 106m arch on the giant Big Swing . All options offer great views of Durban.
Cafes line a section of the stadium base; from here you can explore on a Segway, hire a bike or walk to the beachfront on the pedestrian promenade.

FAQs on Moses Mabhida Stadium
Durban’s mainly known as the busiest port city in South Africa. But there’s more to it than its crystal clear waters and warm weather!
It’s also the home to the large Moses Mabhida Stadium, one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions. There are a lot of things you can do here – and in this article, we’re taking you through our favourite activities!
1. Try the big swing jump.
Trying the big swing jump is a great choice for all adrenaline junkies who visit the Moses Mabhida Stadium. It’s the tallest swing in the world, being 80 metres high up the ground.
It’s an exhilarating experience that’ll make your heart explode in thrill (figuratively, of course). You’ll see the entire field through this along with the people from below who’ll look like ants from your point of view.
Rest assured that you’ll be strapped properly with secure harnesses by our local guides, particularly our good friend Taka who’ll give you all the safety briefings beforehand. He’ll also be there to assist you if there’s anything you need.
2. Ride the SkyCar.
Riding the SkyCar takes you to the top of the arch of the Moses Mabhida Stadium where you’ll get a 360-degree view of the entire Durban City.
During your two-minute ride up, you can look through the glass windows to observe your beautiful surroundings. Once you reach the endpoint, you can get off and go to the viewing platform at the centre.
Of course, you’d better not miss the chance to take good photos or you can simply bask in the stunning panoramic view of our local coastline.
By the way, the SkyCar is not always available due to bad weather conditions so make sure to call the stadium beforehand if you want to ensure its availability.
Here are important contact numbers to keep note of.
3. Go for an adventure walk.
Reaching the top of the stadium can be done in two ways: through the SkyCar, as we discussed previously, or through the adventure walk. It’s around 500 steps to reach the viewing platform on top but it’s worth every drop of your sweat.
Once you reach the peak, you’ll feel out of breath – and just from the climb – but with the stunning panoramic view of our city.
FYI: there will be harnesses wrapped around your lower body as a safety precaution.
4. Do a segway gliding tour.
Segway gliding is one of the most chill and great ways to explore the Moses Mabhida Stadium and its surrounding area.
In case you don’t know what a segway is, it looks like a common scooter but it has a self-balance feature compared to the latter. Manoeuvring is easy because all you need to do is stand upright and hold tight on its main handle.
There will be a guide with you all throughout your tour who’ll tell you everything you need to know, whether it’s the history of the stadium or the background of the pristine beaches nearby.
Pro tip: pre-book your tour ahead of time to ensure a slot.
Here are Segway Gliding Tours’ direct contact lines you can easily reach out to. They are the assigned agency for this tour that is in partnership with the stadium.
5. Tour the stadium.
Moses Mabhida is more than a place to do fun activities, it’s also a significant landmark that’s rooted in history (what is KwaZulu Natal known for?). It has secret tunnels, impressive changing rooms and big conference rooms that’ll pique your curiosity.
That’s why touring the stadium on foot is a must for all first-time visitors!
History 101: Moses Mabhida was the venue for the 2010 FIFA World Cup so you’ll get a good hit of nostalgia about that iconic competition during your tour.
6. Watch sports matches.
You can never go wrong with watching a sports game at Moses Mabhida Stadium – because duh, why not? With its big seating capacity and its circular shape, any spot is perfect for viewing exciting matches.
The most popular games here that you can watch are cricket, golf and rugby union, apart from soccer, of course.
1. People’s Park Café
A few metres away from Moses Mabhida Stadium is People’s Park Café, a family-friendly restaurant with free parking. It’s also close to People’s Park where you can enjoy walking around with your loved ones after your meal.
Here, you can find a great selection of food from classic picks we love, particularly burgers and chips and their special eggs benedict.
Plus, they offer special kiddie meals with sweet treats such as cookies and cakes for your little ones. You can even let them go to the cafe’s playing area after they have their fill so they can have all the fun they want while you relax on the sidelines.
As for adults, you’ll love their bar area because they serve amazing cocktails like margaritas and mojitos. You can even go for a wine option, particularly their Durbanville Hills Sauvignon Blanc if you want something different.
Nino’s very close to the Moses Mabhida Stadium so you can make a stop here before going inside the main stadium itself, especially if you have a long day ahead.
They usually offer breakfast and brunch selections with big servings at an affordable price. Its average rate is R100 for a main meal, fairly cheap given its location.
Their must-try dish is the chicken sliders with either fries or onion rings as sides. We also recommend their power meal combo if you want a heavier meal – it’s a mix of avocado, corn, chicken and oats.
For something refreshing, you should try their different fruit juices. They also have amazing milkshakes with a secret twist that’ll give you the energy you need as you tour the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
3. Grimaldi’s Cucina and Sushi Bar
After your trip to the Moses Mabhida Stadium, make a stop at Grimaldi’s Cucina and Sushi Bar. It only takes five minutes to get here so you won’t have to go far to enjoy good food.
With its soothing ambience, you’ll have a great time with your friends or family in this cafe. Plus, you can get a sneak peek of Durban’s amazing coastline through the glass windows.
Also, you can never go wrong by digging into their classic burgers or baked sushi. Their croissants are to die for, so try one or take it to-go.
4. Mali’s Indian Restaurant
Even if it’s been here for ten years already, we love dropping by Mali’s Indian Restaurant whenever we get the chance.
They serve authentic Indian dishes in traditional copper bowls to make sure your food will still be piping hot once it reaches your table. Plus, they offer generous portions at fair rates, averaging only R80 for a main meal.
We recommend you try their sweet and spicy Dragon Chicken, delicious biryanis – lamb or chicken, either way, it’s worth a bite – and famous prawn golden fry/
As for sides, there are over six options of garlic naan or paratha to choose from. You can then top off your dining experience with some good ol’ desserts such as sooji or kulfi.
For a quick coffee stop that’s close to the stadium, you can have it at Kofi which is only 10 minutes away by foot. They have great sandwiches, and one of our favourites is their smoked chicken with avocado and feta.
But of course, you shouldn’t miss their coffee selection with our go-to picks like lattes and cappuccinos.
FYI: they only accept payments through credit cards or the Zapper app so it’s best to be prepared.
You can get to the Moses Mabhida Stadium via public transporrt in two ways: -Take the Metrorail train that passes on either the North Coast Line or KwaMashu Line. Then alight at the Moses Mahbida station. -Ride on the People Mover buses, for the Northern Line. Get off at the Suncoast Casino and then walk for a few minutes to reach the stadium.
The Moses Mabhida Stadium is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on regular days.
The Moses Mabhidastadium has a seating capacity of 80,000 people.
Moses Mabhida was a former Secretary General of the Communist Party in South Africa. The stadium was named after him because of his contributions to fighting for freedom during the apartheid regime.

About Moses Mabhida Stadium
Durban is one of South Africas most significant metropolises, and the proud home of the Moses Mabhida Stadium . Named after one of the most dedicated freedom fighters of the apartheid regime, this has been voted the most popular stadium in the country on an online poll. And it is no wonder when one considers the clean, modern design, the ample facilities and the innovative use of space and light.
The Moses Mabhida Stadium is characterised by its arch, which makes it a feat of engineering, as well as the perfect spot for adventure sport and adrenalin-inducing activities (such as the Big Rush Big Swing , which has adrenalin-addicts swinging from the dizzying height of 80 metres above the ground). The SkyCar transports visitors to the highest point of this arch (106 metres high), exhibiting some of the most breath-taking views of the stadium and its surrounds.
In addition to hosting a number of the 2010 FIFA World Cup games , this stadium is the perfect venue for other sports matches, tournaments, corporate events, concerts and performances. It is a truly multi-purpose stadium that was designed to rival the likes of the Eiffel Tower and The London Eye in international acclaim and recognition.
The Moses Mabhida Stadium is located in Stamford Hill, and is able to accommodate 56 000 spectators. However, for special events, this capacity can be increased to a massive 85 000. The seats have been arranged and coloured to resemble the ebb and flow of the Indian Ocean, which laps the shores of Durban , and each seat provides a clear line of sight to the pitch.
There are 120 luxury suites and business clubs, which boast no fewer than 7 500 VIP seats for those wanting to watch the games in style or make the best use of this facility for corporate events.
The Moses Mabhida Stadium has already won a number of awards for its design and innovation, and continues to be one of South Africas most beautiful stadiums.

Explore the grand moses mabhida stadium.
T T he term “sporting cathedral” fits Durban ’s Moses Mabhida Stadium , a 2010 FIFA World Cup™ stadium, to perfection. Its classic design, which incorporates elements of the national flag, has made it one of the country's favourite sports stadiums.
The feature that stands out most at the Moses Mabhida Stadium is its grand arch. At 350m long and 106m high, the arch is symbolic of a diverse nation, unified in its love of sport. The two legs of the arch on the southern side of the stadium join together on the northern side, representing a once-divided nation now unified.
This Durban sports stadium was built at a cost of around R3.4 billion, across the road from the rugby stadium most popularly known as Kings Park. It has been widely acclaimed as an architectural masterpiece and has already achieved iconic status.
T T he 70 000-seat 2010 FIFA World Cup™ stadium hosted seven matches during the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, including the semi-final between Spain and Germany.
