Off the Grid: Sally breaks down USA TODAY's daily crossword puzzle, Early Animation

tourist aid crossword clue

There are spoilers ahead. You might want to solve today's puzzle before reading further! Early Animation

Constructors: Sally Hoelscher & Olivia Mitra Framke

Editor: Amanda Rafkin

Comments from Today’s Crossword Constructors

Sally: I'm back in a double role today, as constructor and blogger. This time with a collaboration with my friend, Olivia, who is always a joy to work with. This theme came together when Olivia was rooting for COCO GAUFF to win the U.S. Open last year, and that inspired me to try to get COCO GAUFF in a puzzle as a theme answer. It took a bit of brainstorming and reconfiguring, but ultimately we succeeded.

Olivia: As always, working with Sally was an absolute delight. We had so much fun with this theme! Here are some possible theme entries that didn't make the cut: TANGLED WEB, BRAVE NEW WORLD, and HOME IMPROVEMENT.

Sally : Here's a fun thing. This puzzle is the eighth collaboration Olivia and I have had published together (and it won't be our last!). Earlier this month, we met for the first time in person at the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament.

What I Learned from Today’s Puzzle

  • SCATS (9D: Performs like Shooby Taylor) Shooby Taylor (1929-2003) was a jazz vocalist famous for SCAT singing. His nickname was "The Human Horn, " and he was known for his unique style that used phrases not normally used in SCAT singing. Shooby Taylor made recordings of himself SCAT singing over various recordings. This clue was added by Amanda during editing, and I'm happy to learn about Shooby Taylor.

Random Thoughts & Interesting Things

  • TOON (13A: Betty Boop or Goofy, for short) TOON, a shortened form of "cartoon," is a word used to refer to an animated character. Betty Boop, a caricature of a Jazz Age flapper, has been featured in a number of animated TV shows and movies since 1930, when she made her first appearance in the cartoon Dizzy Dishes . Goofy, an anthropomorphic dog, is a Disney character. Goofy has also appeared in a number of TV shows and movies. Goofy's first appearance was in the cartoon Mickey's Revue (in 1932). This is a fun bonus answer for today's theme, EARLY ANIMATION.
  • CARDS (14A: "Magic: The Gathering" need) Magic: The Gathering (also known as Magic or MTG ) is a game played with collectible CARDS. Players collect and trade CARDS, and then use those CARDS to build decks to play the game. Magic , created by Richard Garfield and first released in 1993, was the first trading card game. This was Olivia's clue suggestion, but I was delighted with it, because my son collects Magic CARDS, so not only am I familiar with the game, I've also purchased a number of Magic CARDS as gifts for him.
  • COCO GAUFF (17A: Winner of the 2023 US Open) COCO GAUFF won her first singles tennis title in 2019 (the Linz Open) at the age of 15. Her first major singles title win was in 2023 when she defeated Aryna Sabalenka to win the US Open. Hats off to COCO GAUFF for being a great tennis player, and for being the inspiration for this puzzle! We have seen COCO GAUFF as a theme answer previously , in a puzzle with a different theme mechanism.
  • SUE (23A: WNBA great Bird) SUE Bird is a retired professional basketball player. She played for WNBA's Seattle Storm from 2002-2022. The Seattle Storm won four WNBA championships during SUE Bird's time on the team. SUE Bird also has five gold medals from her time playing on Team USA in the Olympics. Hey, a sports person I know! (This was my clue suggestion.) Unsurprisingly, I first learned about SUE Bird from a crossword puzzle .
  • ASTHMA (27A: What an albuterol inhaler might treat) ASTHMA is a disease characterized by inflammation of the airways of the lung. Symptoms of ASTHMA include wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath. There is no cure for ASTHMA (at the moment), but the condition can be controlled by avoiding things that trigger the condition, and treating the symptoms with medication. Albuterol inhalers are a first-line treatment for ASTHMA symptoms, and can also be used to prevent ASTHMA symptoms (for example, by using prior to exercise for those with exercise-induced symptoms).
  • ALAIN (31A: French chef Ducasse) French-born chef and restaurateur ALAIN Ducasse owns a number of restaurants around the world, including ALAIN Ducasse at the Dorchester in London, and Le Louis XV in Monte Carlo, both of which have three stars (the highest rating) in the Michelin Guide .
  • HAMM (34A: Mia of football fame) Mia HAMM is a retired professional football (aka soccer) player. She was a member of the U.S. women's national soccer team that won Olympic gold medals in 1996 and 2004, and an Olympic silver medal in 2000. In 2013, Mia HAMM was the first woman inducted into the World Football Hall of Fame.
  • OOZING (35A: Trickling, like lava from a chocolate lava cake) Hmm, for some reason I'm craving chocolate lava cake, with its OOZING, delicious, molten chocolate center.
  • FROZEN CUSTARD (38A: Cold treat made with egg yolks) Or maybe what I'd like to have is FROZEN CUSTARD (decisions, decisions!). FROZEN CUSTARD is similar to ice cream, but its ingredients include egg yolks in addition to cream and sugar. When I think of FROZEN CUSTARD, I'm reminded of Ted Drewes , which has been selling FROZEN CUSTARD in St. Louis, Missouri since 1930.
  • THANOS (42A: Marvel villain who wears the Infinity Gauntlet) THANOS is a Marvel Comics supervillain. If you'd like to learn more about THANOS and the Infinity Gauntlet, I highly recommend reading about Amanda Rafkin's July 2, 2022 puzzle titled "Running the Gauntlet."
  • EPICS (60A: "The Shahnameh" and "The Odyssey," e.g.) The Shahnameh is an EPIC poem by Persian poet Ferdowsi. Written between 977 and 1010 CE, The Shahnameh consists of approximately 50,000 couplets that recount Iran's ancient history. It is the longest EPIC poem written by a single author. Olivia recommends the Empire podcast episode, "Ferdowsi: How One Poet Save Persian Civilization," if you'd like to learn more about the significance of Ferdowsi's work. The Odyssey is an ancient Greek EPIC poem attributed to Homer. Composed around the 8th or 7th century BCE, the poem follows Odysseus on his journey home after the Trojan War.
  • CANE (66A: Prop for Carl Fredrickson) Here's another bonus answer that relates to today's theme. Carl Fredrickson is a character in the 2009 Pixar movie, UP (the movie at the beginning of the theme answer UP TO SPEED). Carl, voiced by Ed Asner, is a widower and a retired balloon salesman. Oh, and he uses a CANE as a mobility aid – a CANE that he uses to hit a construction worker on the head, resulting in Carl being declared a public menace, and ... well, if you haven't seen the movie, I highly recommend it!
  • PETA (67A: Org. that boycotts fur) and SPCA (59D: Org. advocating for pet adoption) We didn't set out to include two animal-rights-related organizations in the puzzle, but that's what we ended up with. The abbreviation "org." in each clue indicates that the answer will be an abbreviation. PETA stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. SPCA stands for Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
  • CICADA (3D: Brood X insect) CICADAs are insects with prominent eyes, short antenna, and membranous front wings. CICADAs are known for their exceptionally loud sound. Living in Iowa, I am quite familiar with the sound of CICADAs. CICADAs spend most of their lives underground, emerging to mate and lay eggs (in the case of the female). They die within a few weeks of emerging from the ground. Some CICADAs emerge annually, while others only emerge periodically. Brood X is a brood of periodical CICADAs that emerge every 17 years. Brood X last emerged in 2021. This year promises to be a memorable year for CICADAs, because Brood XIII (a 17-year CICADA brood) and Brood XIX (a 13-year CICADA brood) will emerge together for the first time since 1803. Both of these are large broods, but fortunately, the geographical ranges of Brood XIII and Brood XIX are different, and the emergence of more than a trillion CICADAs will occur over a 16-state area in the Midwest and Southeast United States. I geeked out a little bit about CICADAs there, but if you want to learn more, check out this (appropriately for today's theme) animated guide to the 2024 CICADA co-emergence .
  • IOU (6D: "Will Venmo you later" note) Venmo is a mobile payment system that allows users to transfer money to each other (thus paying off their IOUs) using their mobile phones.
  • IGUANA (33D: Reptile with a dewlap) A dewlap is a flap of skin that hangs beneath the lower jaw. A male IGUANA may extend and retract its dewlap during courtship. Moose also have dewlaps.
  • FUNKO POP (38D: Vinyl collectible with an oversized head) FUNKO POPs are bigheaded collectible figurines made by  FUNKO, Inc . The company makes FUNKO POPs of a number of popular characters, and even allows you the opportunity to make a customized FUNKO POP. Olivia says, "Funko Pops shouldn’t live in boxes, they deserve to be played with! Here, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader face off while Ahsoka Tano watches on from nearby ruins."
  • SWEDEN (48D: Country with a blue and yellow flag) The flag of SWEDEN consist of a yellow Nordic cross on a blue background. SWEDEN is located in Northern Europe on the Scandinavian peninsula. The capital of SWEDEN is Stockholm.
  • BASRA (50D: Birthplace of Iraqi human rights advocate Reham Yacoub) Reham Yacoub (1991-2020) was a doctor and human rights advocate. Born in BASRA, Iraq, Reham Yacoub campaigned against human rights violations in Iraq, and protested against the Government of Iraq. In August 2020, Reham Yacoub was murdered in BASRA, by unidentified gunmen.
  • HIS (52D: "Killing Me Softly With ___ Song") "Killing Me Softly With HIS Song" was a number one hit for Roberta Flack in 1973, and for the Fugees in 1996.
  • CAT (61D: =^.^= creature) I am always happy to feature the word CAT in a grid. I had a longer clue written for this answer, but when we needed to trim some clues to meet character count limits, Olivia had the idea of using this CAT emoticon. It's perfect, as is my CAT, Willow.

Crossword Puzzle Theme Synopsis

  • COCO GAUFF (17A: Winner of the 2023 US Open)
  • FROZEN CUSTARD (38A: Cold treat made with egg yolks)
  • UP TO SPEED (62A: Fully briefed)

The first word of each theme answer (the EARLY word) is the name of an animated movie: COCO (2017), FROZEN (2013), and UP (2009).

As I have mentioned, Olivia and I started this puzzle with the theme answer of COCO GAUFF. We then did a lot of brainstorming to come up with other well-known animated movies with one word titles. I'm happy with the theme set we came up with, and with the movies featured. I hope you enjoyed this puzzle. Thank you, Olivia, for being an amazing collaborator. And thanks, Amanda, for excellent editing.

Trump Deflates

It wasn’t just Putin who lost in the House vote on Ukraine aid.

Donald Trump seen scowling, with House Speaker Mike Johnson in the foreground.

Listen to this article

Produced by ElevenLabs and News Over Audio (NOA) using AI narration.

Ukraine won. Trump lost.

The House vote to aid Ukraine renews hope that Ukraine can still win its war. It also showed how and why Donald Trump should lose the 2024 election.

For nine years, Trump has dominated the Republican Party. Senators might have loathed him, governors might have despised him, donors might have ridiculed him, college-educated Republican voters might have turned against him—but LOL, nothing mattered. Enough of the Republican base supported him. Everybody else either fell in line, retired from politics, or quit the party.

Trump did not win every fight. In 2019 and 2020, Senate Republicans rejected two of his more hair-raising Federal Reserve nominations, Stephen Moore and Judy Shelton.

But Trump won almost every fight that mattered. Even after January 6, 2021, Senate Republicans protected him from conviction at his impeachment trial. After Trump left office, party leaders still indulged his fantasy that he had “really” won the 2020 election. Attempts to substitute Ron DeSantis or Nikki Haley as the 2024 nominee sputtered and failed.

David Frum: The ego has crash-landed

On aid to Ukraine, Trump got his way for 16 months. When Democrats held the majority in the House of Representatives in 2022, they approved four separate aid requests for Ukraine, totaling $74 billion. As soon as Trump’s party took control of the House, in January 2023, the aid stopped. Every Republican officeholder understood: Those who wished to show loyalty to Trump must side against Ukraine.

At the beginning of this year, Trump was able even to blow up the toughest immigration bill seen in decades—simply to deny President Joe Biden a bipartisan win. Individual Senate Republicans might grumble, but with Trump opposed, the border-security deal disintegrated.

Three months later, Trump’s party in Congress has rebelled against him—and not on a personal payoff to some oddball Trump loyalist, but on one of Trump’s most cherished issues, his siding with Russia against Ukraine.

The anti-Trump, pro-Ukraine rebellion started in the Senate. Twenty-two Republicans joined Democrats to approve aid to Ukraine in February. Dissident House Republicans then threatened to force a vote if the Republican speaker would not schedule one. Speaker Mike Johnson declared himself in favor of Ukraine aid. This weekend, House Republicans split between pro-Ukraine and anti-Ukraine factions. On Friday, the House voted 316–94 in favor of the rule on the aid vote. On Saturday, the aid-to-Ukraine measure passed the House 311–112. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said the Senate will adopt the House-approved aid measures unamended and speed them to President Biden for signature.

As defeat loomed for his anti-Ukraine allies, Trump shifted his message a little. On April 18, he posted on Truth Social claiming that he, too, favored helping Ukraine. “As everyone agrees, Ukrainian Survival and Strength should be much more important to Europe than to us, but it is also important to us!” But that was after-the-fact face-saving, jumping to the winning side as his side was about to lose.

Trump is still cruising to renomination, collecting endorsements even from Republican elected officials who strongly dislike him. But the cracks in unity are visible.

Some are symbolic. Even after Haley withdrew from the Republican presidential contest on March 6, some 13 to 19 percent of Republicans still showed up to cast protest votes for her in contests in Georgia and Washington State on March 12; Arizona, Florida, Illinois, and Ohio on March 19; and New York and Connecticut on April 2.

Other cracks are more substantial—and ominous for Trump. Trump’s fundraising has badly lagged Biden’s, perhaps in part because of Trump’s habit of diverting donations to his own legal defense and other personal uses. In March, Biden had more than twice as much cash on hand as Trump did. Republican Senate candidates in the most competitive races and House candidates also lag behind their Democratic counterparts. CNBC reports that the Republican National Committee is facing “small-dollar donor fatigue” and “major donor hesitation.”

How much of this is traceable to Trump personally? The Ukraine vote gives the most significant clue. Here is the issue on which traditional Republican belief in U.S. global leadership clashes most directly with Trump’s peculiar and sinister enthusiasm for Vladimir Putin’s Russia. And on this issue, the traditional Republicans have now won and Trump’s peculiar enthusiasm got beat.

David Frum: Justice is coming for Donald Trump

To make an avalanche takes more than one tumbling rock. Still, the pro-Ukraine, anti-Trump vote in the House is a very, very big rock. On something that mattered intensely to him—that had become a badge of pro-Trump identity—Trump’s own party worked with Democrats in the House and Senate to hand him a stinging defeat. This example could become contagious.

Republicans lost the House in 2018 because they were beaten in districts once held by George H. W. Bush, Newt Gingrich, and Eric Cantor. They lost the presidency in 2020 in great part because their vote eroded among suburban white men. They lost the Senate in 2021 because Trump fatigue cost them two seats in Georgia. They lost Senate seats and governorships in 2022 because they put forward Trump-branded candidates such as Blake Masters and Kari Lake in Arizona and Doug Mastriano in Pennsylvania.

Republicans alienated too many of their own—and paid the political price. They alienated their own because of Trump’s hostility to Ukraine, and that price was paid in blood and suffering by Ukraine’s soldiers and civilians.

The issues that were supposed to keep the Trump show on the road have proved squibs and fizzles. Inflation is down. Crime is down. Republicans threw away the immigration issue by blowing up—at Trump’s order—the best immigration deal they’ve ever seen. The attempt to confect Biden scandals to equal Trump’s scandals turned into an embarrassing fiasco that relied on information from a suspected Russian spy indicted for lying to the FBI. And Trump himself now faces trial in New York State on one set of felony charges . He faces a federal trial, probably starting this fall, on the even graver criminal indictments arising from his attempt to overturn the 2020 election.

Each of these warnings and troubles has deflated Trump. He has deflated to the point where he could no longer thwart Ukraine aid in Congress. Ukraine won; Trump lost. That may be a repeating pattern in the year ahead.

A shark attacked a British tourist on Friday in the southeastern Caribbean, prompting the government of Trinidad & Tobago to close seven beaches and a marine park. The man was hospitalized in an intensive care unit following the attack, officials said.

The closure included beaches along the northwestern coast of the island of Tobago. The attack occurred at Turtle Beach along Great Courland Bay.

The government said in a statement that shark sightings were reported in the Grafton area and the Buccoo Reef Marine Park. Officials said the closures will allow the Coast Guard and Department of Fisheries to investigate the incident and “neutralize the shark threat, if possible.”

Shark attacks are rare. Last year, there were 69 unprovoked attacks and 22 provoked bites worldwide, along with 14 fatalities, according to the Florida-based International Shark Attack File.

The calf has been trapped alone in the lagoon since its pregnant mother became stranded on a rocky beach at low tide and died four weeks ago. A rescue plan involves trying to corral the female calf into a shallow part of the 3-kilometer lagoon, using boats, divers and a net, before she would be placed in a large fabric sling and hoisted onto a transport vehicle. The Evening

Ukraine could receive some u.s. aid ‘within days’.

Also, the F.T.C. banned noncompete clauses. Here’s the latest at the end of Tuesday.

The Senate today overwhelmingly approved a critical procedural move to tee up the final passage of the long-stalled $95.3 billion package of aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. Senators are expected to pass the package as early as tonight, and President Biden said he would quickly sign it.

After the bills become law, shipments of American weapons could begin flowing to Ukraine, including air-defense missiles and artillery ammunition that Ukrainian officials say are badly needed. Some of the aid could be sent from the Pentagon’s stockpiles in Germany and shipped by rail to the Ukrainian border . “We can move within days,” a Pentagon spokesman said.

The anticipated aid — the first significant new U.S. package for Kyiv in 16 months — was celebrated in Ukraine. Lawmakers in the Ukrainian Parliament held up American flags inside their chamber. Our Kyiv bureau chief, Marc Santora, talked to troops who described a teary response to the news.

“What this has done is provided a much-needed boost for the morale of both Ukrainian soldiers on the front and civilians living under the threat of near-nightly Russian drone and missile bombardments,” Marc said. However, he added, military analysts think it will take a month or two before Ukraine receives enough new supplies to change the dynamic of the war.

A publisher testified that Trump asked for campaign help

A witness in Donald Trump’s criminal trial pulled back the curtain today on what prosecutors claim was a conspiracy to influence the 2016 presidential election.

The witness, David Pecker, the ex-publisher of The National Enquirer, described a 2015 meeting with Trump and his fixer, Michael Cohen. Pecker said the men had asked him what he and his magazines could do “to help the campaign,” which the prosecution could use to convince the jury that Trump’s hush-money payments were meant to help his presidential bid.

Also at the trial, Trump’s lead lawyer and the judge clashed over a gag order prosecutors said he had violated. The judge did not rule, but he questioned the credibility of Trump’s lawyer .

The F.T.C. banned worker noncompete clauses

The Federal Trade Commission announced today that it would ban employers from using so-called noncompete clauses, which limit their workers’ abilities to work for rivals . The agency argued that the sweeping change, which would take effect in about four months, could help raise wages by forcing companies to compete harder for talent.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce vowed to sue the F.T.C. to block the proposal, calling it “an unlawful power grab.” Employers have argued that the noncompete clauses help protect trade secrets.

D.O.J. to pay $139 million for failures in Nassar case

The Justice Department said today that it would pay $138.7 million to resolve 139 claims by young women who were abused by the former U.S.A. Gymnastics doctor Lawrence Nassar . The settlement stemmed from the F.B.I.’s failure to promptly investigate credible claims that Nassar had sexually assaulted many women and girls under the guise of treatment.

The settlement is most likely the end of a yearslong effort by the gymnasts — including the Olympic gold medalists Simone Biles, McKayla Maroney and Aly Raisman — to achieve a measure of justice and public recognition that the institutions entrusted to protect young female athletes failed them.

“Swift is someone who thrives off feeling underestimated and misunderstood, so maybe the mixed reception of this album will be the creative rocket fuel that launches her into her next era,” our music critic Lindsay Zoladz said.

An art exhibit disguised as a gift shop

The Walker Art Center, a contemporary art museum in Minneapolis, has a new gift shop. But instead of selling trinkets or T-shirts, the store aims to contribute to the world of modern design and show how artistic objects can fit in anyone’s home.

The store, called Idea House 3 , includes classics such as Frank Gehry’s Wiggle Side Chair and glossy Panton chairs, and creations from emerging Midwest designers such as the Ghost Garden table from Ayako Aratani (of Detroit) and the octopuslike home objects of Daniel Shapiro (of St. Louis).

ONE LAST THING

Shakespeare’s birthplace ’tis possibly true..

Today was the biggest day of the year for the English town of Stratford-upon-Avon. Legend says that on this day — or at least this month — 460 years ago, William Shakespeare was born there. A building in the town thought to be Shakespeare’s exact birthplace has become one of Britain’s most popular tourist destinations, drawing up to three million visitors a year.

The issue: No one really knows where Shakespeare was born. Still, the town relies heavily on maintaining the legend, which is based in part on the location of a dung heap. We traveled there and heard what experts had to say.

Have a poetic evening.
