There are many places you can visit in Ulaanbaatar capital city of Mongolia, from

but somedays you don’t want to go look at museums, art galleries or see any of the historical sites. You want to cut loose, have some fun, and really experience Mongolia, like the locals. Here are the best places to go if you want to have outdoor activities like the locals.

The best things to do in Ulaanbaatar

1) ‘tengis’ movie theater.

“ Tengis ” is a well-known movie theater one bus stop from the city center. You can watch the newest movies there, as well as play any sort of video game you want, including racing cars and shooting zombies. Because there’s a bakery, fast food, and coffee shops on site, you won’t have to travel far to satisfy your needs.

2) Square of Freedom

A Freedom Square is located just outside of the ‘Tengis’ movie theater. If you come here in the summer, you’re fortunate since a number of activities at the Children and Youth Culture and Recreation Center will be moved to Freedom Square, making it into a mini park.

This mini park is the perfect place to have some fun and cool off on a hot day. You can enjoy free jumping at a height of 3-4 meters, sitting in a balloon and playing with sponges on the water. And if you get hot, there’s even a fountain nearby! In the heat of summer, many young people use this park as a romantic spot for dates.

3) Yavuukhulan park

Yavuukhulan park is the ideal local landmark to get some peace and quiet in Ulaanbaatar if that’s what you’re looking for. Yavuukhulan park, located in front of the 23rd school, is named after the great poet Begziin Yavuukhulan . There are many famous vegan restaurants around here that you can enjoy.

This area is a wonderful place to relax and unwind. The flowers, trees, and fountain behind it will provide comfort. There’s also a fantastic skateboarding park on site. Because it is named after a renowned writer, couples who like reading together will have an unforgettable experience.

3) National Park of Mongolia

There are many national parks in Ulaanbaatar, but The National Park of Mongolia is a place you and your family shouldn’t miss. There’s something for everyone to do, no matter the weather. For example, there are many playgrounds your child can play in or your family can play tennis football basketball in the courts they have.

If you just want to enjoy the countryside scenery without leaving city, you can jog or bicycle through the prepared road. And if you didn’t bring your bicycle don’t worry—you can rent one person or two-person bike there. On the road, you can take a break and have a picnic on the green grass and play traditional games of Mongolia.

4) Sükhbaatar square

From sitting on the chains and steps of General Sukhbaatar’s statue in the Sukhbaatar central square, you can observe hustle and bustle city life of Mongolians. If you visit the square in the evening, the view is even more beautiful as the fountain shoots up into the air in time with music.

As many people choose Sükhbaatar Square for their graduation photo shoot or wedding photo shoot, you can see people in their happiest moments. And if you are lucky, you can see Mongolians in traditional costumes to celebrate their happiest day.

7) Buddha Park

Young people enjoy Buddha Park on the west side of Zaisan Hill because it’s a peaceful place to relax. From the name, you might think this is just one of the religious sites.

But this park is quite a romantic site where you can walk around the deity, ring bells on either side, or turn the wheel in the park. The lighting is also good if you come at night.

8) Amusement park of Mongolia

National amusement park of Mongolia is a kid’s paradise in Mongolia. The amusement park has a lot of different equipment for the children to play. And the most popular equipment in the amusement park are the bumper cars, the pirate ships, and of course the roller coaster.

9) Shangrilla center

Shangrilla center, located within the walking distance from Sukhbaatar square, is famous center for tourists and locals alike. The mall offers a variety of entertainment options, including Urgoo cinema and food courts and dessert stalls. You may enjoy your free time doing anything you want there because it has both purchasing opportunities and leisure activities.

There’s also a buffet restaurant and hotel on the next 12 floors, as well as a fitness center with a swimming pool. Yoga instructors are available for lessons there.

10) Urgoo movie theater

Although Mongolia has many cinemas, it’s undeniable that Urgoo is the best. Not only do they have the most up-to-date films, but the theater also has a wide selection of film showings in various languages for international audiences. The cinema offers screenings in English, Korean with mostly Mongolian subtitles.

But the cinema isn’t the only thing they offer, Urgoo cinema has variety of games and attractions for the youth. Urgoo game land has more than 30 automatic games that can be played by all ages.

11) State Department store

The State department store in UB is at the heart of the city only 10 minutes walk from Sukhbaatar square. With a rich history that dates back to the socialist period, the department store is one of the most iconic buildings in the city.

This is our capital city Ulaanbaatar, the largest city with over one-third of the Mongolia’s population lives here and is the political, cultural, industrial and transportation center. The city is situated in a valley at an elevation of about 1.310 m (about 4.300 ft.) and surrounded by four holy peaks, which make a wonderful backdrop. There are many destinations available for a tourist people as you visit such as, many historical museums, monasteries, national parks, traditional food services, shopping malls and department stores.  

9 must see attractions in Ulaanbaatar 

1. gandan khiid monastery .

Gandan Monastery – the largest Buddhist monastery of Mongolia, with enchanting ceremonies held every day. It has the statue of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, the tallest indoor statue of Buddha in the world, which is 26.5 meter high. The statue contains 2286 precious stones, 27 tons of medicinal plants, 334 sutras and 2 millions of mantras. 

2. Sukhbaatar square 

Sukhbaatar Square – the central square features an equestrian statue of Damdin Sükhbaatar, who has declared Mongolia’s independence from China, in July 1921.  In the north from the statue, the large grey building is State Parliament House, to the north east is the tall, modern palace of Culture, a useful landmark containing the art gallery and several other cultural institutions. At the south-east corner is the State Opera & Ballet theatre. All of cultural and political events and festivals are held on this central square. 

3. Chinggis Khaan Statue

Chinggis Khaan Statue – situated in front side of the Parliament House on the central square. This is the statue of sits Chinggis Khaan and a large colonnade monuments to Ogodei Khaan and Khubilai Khaan, completed in 2006 in time for the 800 th anniversary of Chinggis Khaan’s coronation.

4. Bogd Khaan Winter Palace Museum 

Bogd Khaan Winter Palace Museum – built between 1893 and 1903, this palace is where Mongolia’s eighth Living Buddha, and last king, Jebtzun Damba Khutagt (often called the Bogd Khan), lived for 20 years. There are six temples in the grounds; each now contains Buddhist artwork, including sculpture and THANGKA . 

5. Choijin Lama Monastery

The Choijin Lama Monastery – the Choijin Lama Monastery is composed of four temples that were built in the years 1904 to 1908 by the Eighth Bogd Khaan and dedicated to his brother the Choijin Lama Luvsanhaidav. The temple complex is now a museum preserving the elaborately decorated interiors and containing a rich collection of other Mongolian Buddhist sculpture and painting. 

6. National Museum of Mongolia

 National Museum of Mongolia – established in 1971. The museum sweeps visitors from the Neolithic era right to the present day and storage facility additionally holds over 50000 historical and ethnographical objects. Exhibitions cover prehistory, pre-Mongolia Empire history, Mongol Empire, Mongolia during Qing rule, ethnography and traditional life and twentieth century history. 

7. Mongolian National Library 

Mongolian National Library located in Ulaanbaatar, is the largest and oldest surviving library in Mongolia. It houses over 3 million books and publications, 1 million of which are rare and valuable books, sutras and manuscripts, including the world's only surviving copies of many ancient Buddhist texts.The National Library of Mongolia possesses the great Buddhist canonic texts such as Kanjur consisting of 108 volumes, which contains holy didactical words told by Great Buddha himself and Tanjur, an explanatory dictionary to the Buddha teachings, which consists of 226 volumes. Kanjur means “Concise Orders” in Mongolian translation and it contains over 1260 title books belonging to the ancient Indian Tripitaka or three knowledge areas such as Sutraya, Vinaya, Abhidarma concepts which represent listening, meditating and creating abilities. In addition, the National Library of Mongolia possesses over 10 different kind of Kanjur editions such as Nartan Edition Kanjur /102 volumes/, Derge Edition Kanjur /100 volumes/, Khuree Printed Kanjur /105 volumes/, Mongolian Dust Paint Printed Kanjur /108 volumes/, Mongolian Manuscript Kanjur /76 volumes/, Golden Kanjur /101 volumes/, Silver Kanjur /102 volumes/, and Kanjur written with 9 precious stones which is the only copy in the world. This museum is open to public.

8. Traditional Folklore Concert

Traditional Folklore Concert – you may explore the traditional music and culture scene of f olklore concert for visiting to two kinds of theatre as well as Tumen Ekh Theatre and National Dance and Musical Grand Theatre. Both theatre, feature folk and traditional music, song, dance and contortion, and those interested in the colourful art and culture of the land of the blue sky.  

9. Zaisan Memorial Hill

Zaisan Memorial Hill – a memorial communist-era monument in the southern area of Ulaanbaatar city, that honors Soviet soldiers killed in World War II.  From the bottom of the hill, visitors make the climb of more than five hundred steps. In 2003, a tank memorial, featuring a Soviet tank from a brigade paid for by the Mongolian people, was moved to the foot of the hill. This is the best place for panoramic view of the capital city.

How to Experience Ulaanbaatar’s City Lights, Historic Sites, and Culinary Delights

W edged in the foothills of Mongolia ’s sacred mountains, Ulaanbaatar might just be the biggest city you’ve never heard of. The economic, cultural, and political center of the country is home to 1.5 million citizens, about half of Mongolia’s total population. Geographically limited by the rugged landscape, UB (as the locals call it) continues to define itself as it literally grows up into a contemporary capital city. A modern skyline is rimmed by traditional ger (yurt) districts , and congested streets ultimately give way to vast open spaces. UB teeters between the rural and urban, historic and contemporary, simple and complex. It can easily fill several days on your travel itinerary, and here’s how you should fill them.

Take in the city lights and historic sites.

The heart of Ulaanbaatar is Sukhbaatar Square, a large plaza flanked by the city’s most important buildings, including the Parliament (aka Government House), Cultural Palace, National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet of Mongolia, and Stock Exchange. Huge statues of Mongolian heroes set an official tone, including namesake Damdin Sükhbaatar, who declared Mongolia’s independence from China in 1911. The ideal way to begin a trip to the city is to spend a morning walking through the square as it’s essentially a mini history lesson in itself.

Throughout the year, people gather in Sukhbaatar Square for events like state ceremonies, national holidays, and cultural displays. A national sport day, for example, showcases Mongolian athletic prowess in wrestling, boxing, football, and other sports. Should you be in town during a cultural festival, expect to see brightly costumed dancers and resonating throat singers, along with musicians playing horsehead fiddles, oversized drums, and other traditional instruments.

Despite some leftover Soviet-era architecture, significant recent development has created a respectable skyline of modern buildings. For exceptional views of the city, head to the 25th floor of the Best Western Premier Tuushin or to the top of the Khuvsgul Lake City Tower , both adjacent to Sukhbaatar Square. Just south on the opposite side of Peace Avenue, the chic Blue Sky Tower offers great views, especially from its Blue Sky Lounge.

Spend a day touring the National Museum and the Gandan Monastery.

A short walk from Sukhbaatar Square is the National Museum of Mongolia , well worth its nominal entry fee to learn about generations of heroes and centuries of history, including a collection of some 57,000 objects. Permanent exhibits include prehistoric archeological findings, a full-sized traditional ger, and displays depicting the more recent socialist and democratic eras. Highlights include halls of colorful ethnic costumes, traditional musical instruments, and dinosaur relics from 70 million years ago.

Most Buddhist monasteries in the country were destroyed during the Communist regime with the exception of Gandan Monastery, the largest and most important in Mongolia. Its official name is Gandantegchinlen Khiid, meaning “Great Place of Complete Joy,” but no one will expect you to pronounce that title — Gandan Monastery will do just fine. Reopening in 1944 after being closed for several years, Gandan brought joy to Mongolia as the only functioning monastery at the time. It’s still fully functional and is home to several hundred monks, multiple temples and universities, and an impressive 87-foot-high golden statue. It is one of Mongolia’s most important tourist attractions and a place that nearly everyone you talk to in Mongolia will encourage you to visit.

Visit the world’s most unique department store.

Another must-do in UB is the State Department Store whose motto is, aptly, “All needs are fulfilled.” Established in 1921, the exterior reflects the city’s dark Communist past while the interior is bright and modern. State is well worth a visit, whether seeking forgotten items, picking up Mongolian souvenirs, or looking for global name brands. There’s also some great people-watching to be had there.

Taking a bus from one end of Peace Avenue to the other will get you close to most attractions (purchase a bus card at a store or kiosk near the bus stop before boarding). It can be difficult to hail a taxi on the street and may be a good idea to pay the driver to wait when making a short stop. Official taxis can be arranged by hotel or restaurant staff. Since few taxi drivers speak English, it’s best to have the name and destination written in Mongolian for the driver. Traffic is heavy and can be gridlocked — plan ahead if on a schedule.

Rethink your knowledge of meat.

On the culinary side, UB offers both local and international cuisine, so whether you are an adventurous eater or looking for the old standards, you’ll find good fare here. Meat is king in Mongolia, and near the city center there are many spots to dive into a good local meal. Most traditional dishes feature beef, goat, mutton, or horse; however, poultry, pork, and vegetarian dishes are offered at most urban establishments. Dumplings of various shapes and sizes are traditional and popular.

Among the best spots to try these meats is Khainag Grill, on top of the four-star Khuvsgul Lake Hotel in the Sukhbaatar District. The restaurant serves organic meats cooked on a grill right at your table. You’ll don an apron before you grill your own meat with options ranging from typical beef, pork, lamb, and goat to more uncommon animals like yak, camel, and reindeer. Choose one or get the chef’s taste, which includes four types of meat. Try a Mongolian beer or vodka with your meal, then hang out at the uber cool rooftop terrace surrounding one of only three helipads in the city.

Hot Pot restaurants are also popular in Ulaanbaatar, and they’re your best bet for value. Diners are served a hot broth into which they add noodles, raw meat, and vegetables that cook on the table over a burner. A popular location is the Bull Restaurant on the third floor of the Bluemon Center, northwest of the main city square.

For a unique casual dining experience, check out Black Burger Factory located near Sukhbaatar Square. Their black-bun burgers are more than a novelty — they’re so juicy that you can request a pair of black plastic gloves to wear while eating. The menu includes several burger choices with a diverse array of sauces and fresh vegetables.

Visit Route 22 Restaurant and Wine Lounge for date night, or a similar occasion where a touch of extravagance is needed. The menu features salmon, seabass, truffle risotto, salads, and pastas, though the charcuterie board is stunning and a meal in itself. An extensive wine list includes imports as well as domestic; however, when I tried to order a Mongolian wine, the waiter refused to serve even a sample, hinting that it’s best to stick to imports.

Getting here and staying a while

As noted by the many building cranes dotting the skyline, Ulaanbaatar is a city quite literally on the rise. After years of delay, a new international airport is slated to open in 2020, replacing (and assuming the name of) the current Chinggis Khaan International Airport. Tripling passenger capacity with daily flights arriving from China, Russia and South Korea, the new airport means you can get here from North America by connecting directly in those countries. For a reportedly more quaint experience, hop the Trans-Siberian railway from Moscow or Beijing, transferring to the Trans-Mongolian route that cuts the city from north to south.

Once you arrive, Ulaanbaatar offers a wide range of accommodations from hostels to five-star hotels. With most historical and cultural attractions located within a central walkable area, stay near Sukhbaatar Square to avoid the traffic that often stands the city still. Centrally located hotels like Best Western Premier Tuushin , Khuvsgul Lake Hotel , and Blue Sky Hotel and Tower feature modern rooms,contemporary bars and restaurants, and great service at a price point typically under $100 per night. Keep it even more affordable by staying in a hostel. The best options include UB Guesthouse & Hostel, Golden Gobi, Okay Hostel, and Town Yard Hostel.

The Best Things to Do in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – More Than Just a Pitstop to the Great Outdoors

Mongolia may be known more for its great outdoors, yurt stays and other natural attractions but any visitor to this North Asian country will inevitably find themselves in Ulaanbaatar at least once during their trip. For many years, the Mongolian capital was nothing more than a large town with several ger (yurt) districts surrounding the compact city center but the resources boom of the past years has brought a new life to the city with luxury hotels, skyscrapers and upscale malls now dotting the urban landscape. For visitors to Ulaanbaatar, there are enough attractions to keep one busy for a few days at least.

Chinggis Square (formerly Sukhbaatar Square)

Located right at the heart of Ulaanbaatar, the Chinggis Square dates back from the late 19th century when the square was surrounded by a temple complex. This changed after the Mongolian revolution in 1921 and the temples surrounding the square were replaced with government buildings. The square was then named after revolutionary hero, Damdin Sukhbaatar. In 2013, the square’s name was changed to Chinggis Square in honor of Genghis Khan.

Tip: Head over to the square at 11AM to witness the changing of the guards ceremony. You’ll find soldiers dressed in ancient Mongolian military gear as they walk towards the statue of Genghis Khan.

Winter Palace of the Bogd Khan

Probably the most architecturally astounding building in the city, the Bogd Khan Palace was built in the early 1900s in the Chinese style. It consists of several courtyards and has been turned into a museum. Inside, you’ll find several artifacts including religious objects, paintings, sculptures, metal objects and even clothes. Do note though that you’ll need to pay extra if you wish to take photos (the photography fee is around 10 times more expensive than the admission fee).

Admission: 5,000 Tugrik / Photography Fee: 50,000 Tugrik Opening Hours: Mid-May to Mid-September: 9AM to 5:30PM / Mid-September to Mid-May: 9:30AM to 4:30PM (Closed Wednesdays and Thursdays)

Gandan Monastery

Located at the northwestern side of the city, near Holiday Inn Ulaanbaatar , is the main temple in the city. It’s quite busy no matter which day you visit with the busiest being Sunday. Gandan Monastery consists of a number of buildings with the main one being a white structure called   Migjid Janraisig Sum. There is a photography fee to enter the hall where you see an imposing 26.5 meter statue of Avalokitesvara.

Chojin Lama Monastery

Another museum to check out when in Ulaanbaatar, the Chojin Lama Monastery which is located just across the Shangri-la Hotel Ulaanbaatar , was converted into a cultural monument in the 1940s. Inside you’ll find a number of religious artifacts including the embalmed mummy of the teacher of the Bogd Khan. Apart from this, the temple grounds is a also architectural pleasing that can be photographed sans the exorbitant photography fees being charged at the Bogd Khan Palace.

Admission: 5,000 Tugrik Opening Hours: 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM (closed on Sundays and Mondays)

Zaisan Memorial

For a bird’s eye view of the growing skyline of UB, head up to Zaisan Memorial, a Soviet-style monument perched on a hill in the southern part of the city. Best time to visit is during the afternoons when the sun shines over the nearby buildings – an especially scenic sight during winter when the ground is covered in snow.

Tip: The memorial is a bit of a walk from the rest of the city so your best bet would be to take a cab and ask the driver to wait for you by the parking area. You will pass by the Bogd Khan Palace on your way there so it may make sense to combine the two places when sightseeing.

Watching Mongolian Opera

For a taste of Mongolia’s colorful cultural scene, watch one of the live shows at the theater located at Sukhbaatar Square. You can catch a number of performances including western ballet but one that’s highly recommended is the Mongolian opera. Sure, you may not understand anything but it provides for a good glimpse into local traditions (as well as a peek into the colorful local costumes!)

Day Trips From Ulaanbaatar

Gorkhi terelj national park.

Around an hour’s drive from Ulaanbaatar, Gorkhi Terelj offers a taste of what Mongolia is known for – stunning landscapes – without having to travel for hours. Those who only have a couple of days in Mongolia can very well benefit from the proximity of the national park to the city.

One of the most well-known spots within Gorkhi Terelj is the Turtle Rock, located close to a valley with a sweeping scenery. The place is more famous for its greenery but was picturesque nonetheless even during winter.

It’s also possible to stay overnight within the national park. There are yurt stay options as well as some reasonable cabins open for short stays.

Chinggis Khan Statue Complex in Tsonjin Boldog

Not far from Gorkhi Terelj is the large 130 ft tall Genghis Khan statue complex which houses a museum and viewing deck. The attraction is fairly new (completed in 2008) and you can take the lift from the base up to the horse’s back for a nearer view of Genghis Khan’s image.

Taking Selfies With Eagles

On the road to Terelj and the Genghis Khan statue, you’ll spot a number of caretakers with eagles by the roadside. You can take photos with these large birds for a fee and have them perch on your arms.

Tip: You can hire a car to take you to Terelj and the Genghis Khan statue for approximately US$70 to 100 depending how long you stay. I went with the VIP Taxi Service at Ulaanbaatar which charges 35,000 Tugrik per hour for trips farther afield. Drivers were very professional, spoke English and the cars were quite plush. Best Time to Visit Ulaanbaatar

The best time to visit the city and Mongolia in general is during the summer months from June to early September. I did not have that luxury when I visited Mongolia in March during late winter. Temperatures hovered at -15 degrees celsius in early morning with highs of -5 celsius but it was still feasible to go out and about as it was sunny.

What I wore for winter in Mongolia: one layer of thermal (top and bottom), two layers of sweaters, one winter jacket, jeans, two layers of socks, neck warmers, earmuffs. While boots are recommended, I got by wearing sneakers as long as I had at least 2 layers of socks (the ground could get very cold).

Getting From Airport to City

Prior to arriving in Ulaanbaatar, I was warned about taxi drivers who rip off unsuspecting travelers heading to the city from the airport. While in the airport, you will get a lot of drivers waiting at the arrivals area asking if you need a taxi. However, there is a counter right by the baggage claim section where you can arrange a taxi for not more than 20,000 Tugrik if you are traveling to the city.

A guide and things to do in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

The second stop on our Trans Mongolian Railway adventure was Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. We arrived there one afternoon after catching the train from Beijing to Ulaanbaatar. The train to Ulaanbaatar from Beijing was long but a great chance to relax!

The capital of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar was gearing up for the Naadaam Festival which started the day after our arrival. The city was full of people arriving from far and wide to enjoy and celebrate the traditional games of horse racing, archery and wrestling during the 2-day Naadam party.

About Ulaanbaatar

Ulaanbaatar, sometimes written as Ulan Bator or just UB, is the capital city of Mongolia and it’s hugely more westernised than you may be thinking. Some small city in the countryside this is not.

Ulaanbaatar is a sprawling city complete with high rises, more coffee shops than you’ll likely see anywhere in Asia, fashionably dressed residents and a complicated history.

The city was founded as a nomadic Buddhist centre and has been under Russian control in the past. You’ll notice a mix of more Soviet-style buildings in amongst Chinese as you wander around the city.

The coldest capital in the world, Ulaanbaatar comes alive in the summer and I can attest to the fact it’s definitely not cold in July – Ulaanbaatar weather in the summer is HOT!

That cold creates other problems too, mainly the cloud of smoke that sits over the city in winter as a result of all the coal-burning as it keeps the houses warm.

If it’s the dream of pristine Mongolian air you’re after, you’re not going to find it in Ulaanbaatar thanks to the air pollution in Ulaanbaatar, but make sure to spend some time in this city during your Trans Mongolian Railway trip.

Where is Ulaanbaatar?

Ulaanbaatar is in Mongolia and more precisely north-central Mongolia. It’s at an elevation of 1,300m above sea level in a valley on the banks of the Tuul River. The city is connected to both Russia and China by rail on an off-shoot of the Trans Siberian Railway more commonly referred to as the Trans-Mongolian Railway.

Is Mongolia safe?

I felt very safe when walking around Ulaanbaatar and travelling in Mongolia and yes, it’s safe to travel to Mongolia.

Lots of people travel independently either hiring their own vehicles and exploring remote parts of Mongolia or by using public transport and taxis to get around the country.

There are also plenty of tours organised by the guesthouses and hostels that you can join if you want to meet new people and travel as a group.

How to get to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

The main ways people get to the city of Ulaanbaatar are by flying into Chinggis Kahn airport, or by getting the train to Ulaanbaatar from Beijing. We took the second option and caught the K23 train from Beijing to UB.

Flights to Ulaanbaatar

International flights arriving in Ulaanbaatar arrive at the Chinggis Khaan Ulaanbaatar Airport. Aeroflot flies from Moscow and Air China flies to Mongolia from Beijing. You can also fly from Turkey and Korea.

If you’re travelling to Mongolia from Canada, the USA or Europe you’ll normally have to make a stopover.

How to travel to Mongolia on the Trans Siberian Railway

We arrived (and left) Ulaanbaatar by train by taking the Trans-Siberian Railway to Ulaanbaatar from Beijing. You can also get the train from Russia to Ulaanbaatar.

Booking Trans Mongolian railway tickets

If you’re travelling during peak season it’s highly recommended you book your train tickets several months in advance. This is especially true if you’re hoping to travel to Ulaanbaatar for Naadam.

We booked our tickets online through CITS and while, yes there is a huge mark up on tickets when booking through an agency, if you’re short on time like we were, it’s a lot easier to just get them booked beforehand.

If you’re spending longer travelling around the area then you can most likely book in person a few days before. Especially if you’re not fussy about which class you’re in. We were in the hard-sleepers and it was still very comfortable.

Train Beijing to Ulaanbaatar

The Beijing to Ulaanbaatar trains (the K23 and K3) run on Mondays, Tuesday and Wednesday and leaves at 7.27 am from Beijing Railway Station (北京站). It’s easy to get to the train station from where ever you’re staying in Beijing by subway.

The journey takes around 32 hours in total with about 5 of that being the border crossing between China and Mongolia.

Russia to Ulaanbaatar by train

You can also arrive in Ulaanbaatar by train from Russia. A lot of people on the Trans Siberian Railway will stop at Irkutsk in Russia to see Lake Baikal but you can also come directly from Moscow if you’re doing the whole of the Trans Siberian Railway.

There are 3 trains that go from Ulaanbaatar to Russi. There’s the 305 which leaves on Tuesday, Saturday and Sundays, the 3 which leaves on Thursdays and from there’s the 5 which leaves on Fridays from June to October.

Where to stay in Ulaanbaatar

Ulaanbaatar is full of guest-houses with super friendly hosts. During our time in Ulaanbaatar, we stayed at 2 guest houses and at the first we had the most helpful host we’ve ever met on our travels.

Most hostels and guest houses also run their own tours if you’ve yet to book anything.

Hostels in Ulaanbaatar

There are lots of guesthouses and hostels in Ulaanbaatar which offer budget accommodation for your trip to Mongolia. Many of them will help you out with a transfer from the airport of the Ulaanbaatar railway station to the hostel.

• Sara’s Guest House: We stayed at Sara’s Guest House for most of our trip to Ulaanbaatar. Sara was immensely helpful with getting us cheaper tickets for Naadam, getting a SIM Card and where to eat nearby. Plus the price is hard to beat making this the best guest house in Ulaanbaatar! • Danista Nomads Tour Hostel: Another highly recommended hostel in Ulaanbaatar is Danista Nomads hostel . There are single-sex dorms available here as well as single and private rooms. Very close to the monastery. Book here & See prices.
• Khuvsgul Lake Hostel: Here there’s a restaurant, gym, American breakfast and a kitchen in which you can prepare your own meals. See prices.  
• Zaya Guest House:  Zaya Guest House rooms have a TV, some have a seating area and there’s a coffee machine in the room. They look stylish too! Book here

Ulaanbaatar hotels are few and far between but there are some. However, you should expect to pay a lot more compared to what you get for the hostels.

Naadam Festival in Ulaanbaatar

Naadam is Mongolia’s national celebration of national independence and it combines both arts and sports. The main events at the Naadam festival are the 3 manly sports – wrestling, horseracing and archery – alongside singing and dancing.

The sports for Naadam run for 2 days in July (in 2019 is was 11-12), but Mongolians celebrate for about 5 days. There are also smaller Naadam festivals out in the Mongolian countryside but Naadam in Ulaanbaatar is the main event.

We attended the opening ceremony, archery and wrestling in the stadium and headed out to the country to watch the horseracing too. The opening ceremony of Naadam was like attending an Olympic Ceremony!

If you have flexibility with when you visit Mongolia then try and time it around Naadam as it’s got to be the best time to visit Mongolia!

Try fermented horse milk and cheese curds

Our host, Sara, at the guest house greeted us when we returned one evening with a glass of fermented horse milk and cheese curds. I was curious to try these especially Mongolian treats and, whilst I won’t exactly be looking to add them to my weekly shopping list, I’m glad we got to try them. It’s a little bit fizzy and very sour tasting!

Fermented horse milk is actually alcoholic and you’ll see Mongolians walking around with several litres of the stuff!

We were told that cheese curds are often used as snacks for children, especially amongst Mongolian nomads. Sometimes there’s fruit put in them to make it a bit more appetising.

Visit Sükhbaatar Square

Sükhbaatar Square is the site where, in July 1921, Damdin Sükhbaatar declared Mongolia’s final independence from China. The square that’s now there features a bronze statue of Sükhbaatar astride his horse and is one of the most well-known Mongolian tourist spots.

Given that Mongolia doesn’t really use addresses, Sükhbaatar Square is a pretty good landmark for finding your way around the city.

Go to Gandan Khiid monastery

The full name of Gandan Khiid monastery, Gandantegchinlen, roughly translates as “the great place of complete joy”.

Around the start of the 19th Century, there were more than 100 temples and monasteries in Ulaanbaatar. Unfortunately, only a handful of them survived the religious purges of 1937 and it wasn’t until the early 1990s the Mongolians started to openly practise Buddhism again.

Gandan Khiid monastery is one of Mongolia’s most important and one of the biggest attractions in Ulaanbaatar too.

• It costs 4000T to enter and try to visit around 9 am/10 am to see the ceremonies

We ended up just wandering around the complex to the east of the main monastery and caught the end of some of the prayers and ceremonies too.

Learn about Mongolian history

Ulaanbaatar has quite a few museums but the main one to visit is the National Museum of Mongolia.

Mongolia’s National Museum takes you from the Neolithic era right to the present day. It gives you an overview of Mongolian culture from stone-age petroglyphs to displays of traditional ceremonial costumes.

I knew very little about Mongolian history before visiting and this was a great introduction.

• Tickets cost 8000T per adult plus an extra 10,000T if you want to take photos.

Head to the Mongolian countryside and stay in a Ger

Mongolia’s famed for its countryside and the pristine air. And while this is a post about the best things to do in Ulaanbaatar, the countryside isn’t too far away from the city and it’s one of the top Mongolia tourist attractions!

There are two Mongolian National Parks near Ulaanbaatar. They’re called Gorkhi-Terelj and Khustain Nuruu National Park.

Gorkhi-Terelj National Park is the one we visited after the Naadam festivities and spent a couple of nights living in a Ger, washing in rivers and hanging with cows. It was beautiful and I’d highly recommend it as one of the best places to see in Mongolia near the city!

Explore Mongolian coffee culture

I really didn’t expect Mongolia to have such a huge coffee scene! There were coffee shops everywhere and not just because ‘coffee’ was the only word we could recognise.

There’s no Starbucks (or at least we didn’t see any), but there are loads of independent looking and local chains of coffee shops in Ulaanbaatar. You could spend days trying them all out.

We like Cafe Bene when we just needed a more westernised lunch (sandwich & an iced coffee with free wifi). Plus it was the only place open during Naadam.

• Millie’s Espresso

Eat Buuz and Khuushuur

These two Mongolian foods are delicious and a must eat when you’re on your trip in Ulaanbaatar. They’re also very cheap and so great if you’re travelling on a budget!

Buuz is a Mongolian steamed dumpling filled with meat (usually minced mutton or beef). You’ll find it on the menus at many Mongolian cafes and Ulaanbaatar restaurants. We actually tried vegan ones (see below) on our first night in UB.

Khuushuur is a meat pastry or dumpling popular in Mongolia; a bit like an English pasty (with less veg). The meat inside tends to be either beef or mutton mixed with onion, salt and a few other spices.

On one day of our trip to Ulaanbaatar, we ate Khuushuur for lunch and dinner (’cause they were cheap and the only thing on offer at Naadam!). But they’re yummy too.

Experiment with Mongolian vegan culture

Another surprise when visiting Mongolia was the number of vegan restaurants in Ulaanbaatar. Mongolia isn’t exactly a country you’d think of as having been swept up by the move towards veganism and eating less meat. Especially when you consider the dishes that are traditionally eaten there.

However, there are so many good vegan places, some of them are even the best restaurants in Ulaanbaatar! We ate at one of them on our first night and were recommended a few more that we didn’t quite get time to try.

• Luna Blanca – we ate here and there are big portions of vegan food for a good price
• Bosco Verde – one of the top-rated vegan restaurants in UB
• Loving Hut – popular vegan chain in Ulaanbaatar
• Agnista – gets really good reviews

Visit Narantuul Market

Also known as the black market, Narantuul Market in Ulaanbaatar is the place to go if you like to haggle. You’ll find pretty much everything imaginable here from fabrics to fruits and buttons to fur-lined boots.

Top tip: This market is notorious for pickpockets and the host from our Ger told us of a couple of occasions he, or people he’s with, have been victims of theft.

State Department Store

If there’s any shopping you want to get done then make sure to go shopping in Ulaanbaatar’s State Department Store. This place is full of food, souvenirs and gifts and it’s super central so the perfect place to stop in at when you’re in Ulaanbaatar.

Go hiking on Mt Bogd Kahn

Mountains are the backdrop to the city of Ulaanbaatar and the closest one if known as Mt Bogd Kahn. Spending a day hiking this mountain, visiting the nature reserve and the ruins of Manzushir Monastery is a day well spent.

Visit the Manzushir Monastery ruins first. The monastery was built in 1733 but destroyed in the 1930s during the anti-religion campaigns.

However, you can still see the main temple which has survived and then a few stone terraces and walls along the cliffs. Then, enjoy hiking through the forests and meadows to Tsetsee Gun Peak which is 2,256m above sea level.

See the Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue

Another top thing to do in Ulaanbaatar is to take go out to the Genghis Khan equestrian statue during your Mongolia trip. The Genghis Khan Statue Complex is 54 kilometres from Ulaanbaatar and takes roughly an hour to get to.

While Genghis Kahn is often seen as a brutal and savage dictator outside of Mongolia, he’s very much the national hero of Mongolia and this statue was built to remember him. The statue was built in 2008 and is a 40-metre high statue of Kahn on his horse.

It’s the world’s largest equestrian statue and is more than double the height of the previous record holder in Uruguay . It took 250 tonnes of stainless steel and reportedly cost $4.1 million to construct! Nowadays it’s top of the list when it comes to Mongolia’s famous landmarks!

There’s a museum inside and then you can climb the stairs to the top of the horse’s head for a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape.

National Museum of Mongolia

Start off by steeping yourself into the history of Ulaanbaatar and the country of Mongolia. Open to visitors every day in the summer, the museum is easily accessible throughout the week. There’s really no excuse not to stop by!

Central Museum of Mongolian Dinosaurs

Keep the educational vibes going with a trip to Ulaanbaatar’s Central Museum of Mongolian Dinosaurs. There aren’t a ton of museums out there wholly devoted to dinosaur fossils (most are grouped into natural history museums), so take advantage of this unique opportunity. You can check out a Velociraptor, Tarbosaurus bataar, and more intimidating creatures from the Mesozoic Era. This quirky stop is sure to add a unique element to your vacation.

Historical Sites

On your journey through Ulaanbaatar, the city’s spiritual sites and other key landmarks will highlight significant aspects of Mongolian culture. These are just a couple of the incredible structures you can tour while in the city.

Choijin Lama Temple

Over 100 years old, this Buddhist monastery contains multiple temples, all boasting stunning architectural designs and brimming with history. While no longer operating as a monastery, you can still take a tour through and observe its transition from a place of worship to iconic Ulaanbaatar site. Plus, its central location in the city makes it a natural stop for visitors.

Winter Palace of the Bogd Khan

The Eighth Bogd Khan served as Mongolia’s head of state and an important spiritual leader in the early 20th century. When you tour his Winter Palace in Ulaanbaatar you’ll be taking in the estate’s many beautiful and historical buildings where, inside, you’ll find the Bogd Khan’s throne, taxidermied animals, and more preserved contents.

After his death in 1924, a new government was born, so this attraction provides a unique look at a past lifestyle.

Side Excursions

Explore just beyond the city’s central area to embark on some adventurous outdoor activities and take in another iconic site of the Ulaanbaatar region.

Gorkhi Terelj National Park

 Get your camera ready! Gorkhi Terelj National Park is known for its picturesque landscape along with its choice of outdoor activities. You can go horseback riding, try out rafting, or embark on a rock climbing excursion. Be sure to stop and see Turtle Rock, a rock formation aptly named for its unique shape.

There’s also an array of wildlife to spot, including over 200 species of birds. From the mountainous terrain to picturesque Khagiin Khar Lake, there’s a lot to see. Several tour companies will take you out there, or, if you’ve rented a car, you can make arrangements yourself. Gorkhi Terelj National Park is one of Ulaanbaatar’s most popular and scenic sites, so be sure to allow yourself plenty of time in order to appreciate all it has to offer!

Genghis Khan Statue Complex

While you’re headed out to just east of the city, plan to stop by the Genghis Khan Statue Complex. Some tours that go out to Gorkhi Terelj National Park will do a combined tour that includes this site as well. Learn about Mongolia’s early khans, or leaders, through the museum exhibitions inside the complex. Gracing the top of the building is a statue of Genghis Khan on his horse, and, in its entirety, the structure stands 40 meters high.

From inside the horse’s head, you can take in the surrounding view, including the picture perfect Tuul River.

Just for Fun Attractions

Traveling is hard work! Sometimes, you just need to do something regular in a totally not regular place. Round out your trip to the Mongolian city with these smile-inducing things to do in Ulaanbaatar.

National Sports Stadium

How many people back home can say they attended a Mongolian football match in the National Sports Stadium? Probably not many. The stadium hosts multiple athletic events, the most frequent being football, so if you’re a sports fan or just into having a blast at a local event, take out some time to watch FC Ulaanbaatar play.

And if you’re visiting in July, maybe you’ll be able to catch their Independence Day celebration, the Naadam Festival, which also takes place in the stadium.

If you’re looking for free things to do in Ulaanbaatar , these are the 26 best places, parks, and best things to do in Mongolia’s urban capital. The places on this list aren’t your typical tourist attractions, these are the less discovered, cool, weird, and off-beat things to do and see in Ulaanbaatar. Many of them are things I personally love doing, and many of the places are the reason I fell in love with the city.

For years Ulaanbaatar has has a negative reputation as an ugly, harsh, and hard to visit city. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. There is always some truth to a rumor, but I found Ulaanbaatar to be an easy to navigate city from my first day here.

I’ll never forget going for an early morning run the first morning after I arrived and seeing Mongolians dressed in deels walking through the streets. I almost couldn’t believe my jetlagged eyes.

The city and Mongolian culture is rapidly changing and developing faster than ever, which only means you shouldn’t wait any longer to visit Mongolia. A place that I still believe is one of the world’s most beautiful and unique destinations.

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia's Undiscovered Capital

I’ve lived in Ulaanbaatar since 2018, ever since I first fell in love with the country on a visit to the Tsaatan tribe. Like many other first time visitors to Mongolia, I landed in Mongolia having no idea what to expect from this strange and unfamiliar capital city.

I knew I would struggle with the language barrier, like many people do, but what about the etiquette and traditions? Mongolians deeply respect their traditional and ancient culture, they are an extremely proud people, and their Buddhist beliefs guide their everyday lives. After stumbling my way through their traditions and rituals, I quickly realized they were also patient and kind people who appreciated my efforts, not my execution.

The drastic temperature swings and sudden summer storms also took me some time to get used to. Not to mention the fact that Ulaanbaatar is most famous for being the coldest capital in the world. Despite this, my respect for the locals grew even more after I realized this didn’t stop them from living their lives. They simply carried on with what they normally do, just in a lot more layers and clothing!

To this day the architecture in the capital doesn’t do much for me. It’s an incongruent mix of Soviet blocks and modern high rise buildings that perfectly reflect the country’s struggle to hold onto their past while rushing into the future. I wouldn’t compare Ulaanbaatar to cities like Seoul or Hong Kong, but I would go so far as to compare it to a smaller, less populated Kathmandu.

You’ll see the city’s named spelled several different ways, such as Ulan Bator. Ulaanbaatar is Mongolia’s largest city and it’s where the majority of the population lives. The Trans-Mongolian train stops here and many people travel here to for the first time seeking an unforgettable adventure in the least densely populated country in the world.

It also didn’t take me long to notice that young Mongolians are extremely fashionable. This isn’t the kind of place you’ll want to step out for dinner in your adventure clothes, as many travelers learn the hard way. Whether you’re feeling underdressed and underprepared for Ulaanbaatar’s nightlife, or you just want to see what thrift and vintage stores are like in this Central Asian country, these are the shops worth checking out.

Drool Over the Cashmere at the World’s Largest Cashmere Store

Step into Gobi Cashmere and admire the beauty of Mongolia’s finest resource and export at the world’s largest cashmere store. With two floors of jackets, sweaters, leggings, socks, hats, scarves, blankets, and more, it’s here where you’ll start to understand how high quality Mongolian cashmere really is.

A piece of local advice, the Gobi Cashmere Organic line is my preferred line to shop. Since they don’t die the fibers in this line, these are the softest pieces you can buy. Every purchase I’ve made from this line is still in great condition and it really has been my secret weapon out on the Mongolian steppe. Cashmere is moisture wicking, it doesn’t smell, it holds your internal heat, and it looks good. What’s not to like about it! Plus, buying cashmere in Mongolia will cost a fraction of what it does abroad. Expect to pay at least $100 for a sweater and $400 or more for a cashmere jacket.

Step into the Ultimate Murin Khuur Musical Instrument Shop

Stepping into  Egshiglen  is a musician’s dream. If you’re thinking about buying a Murin Khuur, otherwise known as a horse head fiddle, or you’re curious to see them in person, this is the place to do it.

Enjoy the Walking Path in the National Park of Mongolia Along the Tuul River

Walk along the bank of the Tuul River on this nice, clean, and well-kept walking path in the National Park. A popular spot for bikers and runners, the path’s entrance is on the backside of the park, just off Ikh Mongol State Street, and is about 8 kilometers long.

Female Travelers Only: Visit the Women at the Mongolian Women’s Buddhist Center

You won’t find information about this place in a guidebook or online. This is one of those places that’s so local, I only know about it from living in Ulaanbaatar and finding it on accident myself. It’s been several years since I’ve been, but when I went I was able to sit with a woman who listened to my problem and said prayers for me, much the same way monks do. It was a great experience, and one that is very, very local. So local that you’ll need a translator when you go.

The Mongolian Women’s Buddhist Center is located almost directly across from Nomado Hotel at Dilav Khutagt Jamsranjav’s street 25.

See the Lenin Reliefs and Be Reminded of Mongolia’s Soviet Past at the Former Lenin Museum

Most people, including myself, forget that Mongolia was the second state to join the Soviet Union back in 1924. During Soviet rule more than 30,000 people were killed, mainly monks, artists, and intellects, and it was a dark time in Mongolian history. Glimpses of that dark past can still be found around Ulaanbaatar today. My favorite, and the most glaring example, are the reliefs that still adorn the front of what is now the Central Dinosaur Museum. Years ago the museum was the Lenin Museum and there was even a statue of him proudly standing out in the square in front. Today the statue is gone, but the reliefs remain.

Browse the Stalls at the Black Market

Narantuul, more commonly called the  Black Market , is the city’s biggest open market. It’s where locals come to buy everything from furniture and kitchen stuff to saddles and horse tack. My favorite section is the two rows of men’s and women’s deels (traditional Mongolian robes) hanging in all sizes and colors. You can haggle on the price, but don’t expect a huge drop in what the seller originally quotes. They are hard bargainers and usually get almost what they originally asked for. Still, it’s fun to get a banter going.

Hike Bogd Khan Mountain in the World’s First National Park

A fun fact that most people don’t know is that Mongolia is home to the world’s first national park . Bogd Khan Uul Strictly Protected Area was declared a protected site back in 1783 by the Qing Dynasty. Inside the national park, Bogd Khan Mountain is one of the most popular places to hike in Ulaanbaatar and it sits at 2,261 meters (7,418 ft). The mountain’s main hiking trail starts behind the “Chinggisiin Urgoo” Hotel and Restaurant. It’s also a great area to have a picnic with a view of the capital directly in front of you. The hike up the mountain is challenging, especially given Ulaanbaatar’s elevation (1,300 meters/4,300 ft), but the nature along the trail is incredible. Look for the blue sign with gold soyombo symbol at the top of the peak to know you’ve successfully made it to the most panoramic view of Ulaanbaatar. If you’re craving a longer adventure, put aside two to three days to cross over the mountain to Tsetsee Gun peak and down to Manzushir Monastery before hitching a ride back to Ulaanbaatar.

People watch in Sükhbaatar Square

There’s no doubt that Sukhbaatar Square is the heart of Ulaanbaatar and one of the most visited places in the city. From June thru September the area of the main square in front of the Parliament Building is laid out with artificial turf that’s the perfect place for relaxing and people watching. A stage is also erected in the square over these summer months, and free concerts, ceremonies, and other celebrations happen almost daily.

If you want to be really local, buy a bag of  khuushuur  (Mongolian fried meat pockets) from one of the food trucks in the square. They’re actually pretty delicious!

Listen to the Monks Chant at Gandantegchinlen Monastery

The Great Place of Complete Joy,  Gandantegchinlen Monastery , or Gandan for short, is the perfect way to start a day in Ulaanbaatar. Go before 9 am to listen to the monks start their morning chants. Be sure to follow the lead of the locals when entering and exiting the main temple, it’s bad energy to turn your back on the monks and relics!

Not free, but still cheap at 7,000 tugrik, buy a ticket to see the Avalokiteśvara Statue inside the monastery compound. They say this 25.6-metre (84 ft) gilded bronze and precious stones statue is the largest indoor statue in the world, but I can neither confirm nor deny!

For the Best Sunset View of Ulaanbaatar Climb the Steps to the Zaisan Memorial Monument

For the best view of Ulaanbaatar, go to the Zaisan Memorial Monument at sunset. There are almost 100 steps to reach the top of the hill and you won’t want to forget your camera when you go. My biggest piece of advice for this outing is to plan your trip accordingly. Traffic to Zaisan from the city center might seem like a short trip, but it can take more than one hour to reach during rush hour traffic. If you really want to make it into an adventure, jump on one of the local buses heading south down Chinggis Avenue.

Embrace the Quirkiness of the National Amusement Park

On the backside of the Shangri-La Mall, the National Amusement Park is a small, quirky, and fun amusement park. A merry-go-round, Ferris wheel, high-flying rollercoaster, zoo and aquarium all round out the experience here. Stroll through the park at sunset and look for the castle at the back of the park surrounded by a moat! There’s a restaurant inside the castle that serves Mongolian and western cuisine.

Feel the Power of Democracy in Beatles Square

One of the more obscure things to do in Ulaanbaatar, Beatles Square is a small park that pays tribute to the Beatles and the freedoms they inspired. Across the street from the State Department Store, the square was once where young Mongolians listened to Western music illegally during Soviet times. As a result, it was here where discussions around freedom and democracy took place, helping to spark the Mongolian Revolution of 1990, also called the 1990 Democratic Revolution.

Dashchoilin Monastery

Home to an estimated 100 monks, Dashchoilin Monastery is a progressive, forward thinking center in Ulaanbaatar. Inside the center a school and research institute operate alongside training, health, humanitarian, and nature conservation initiatives all coordinated by the monks.

To support the monastery and learn more about Buddhism, book a torma-making class (a Buddhist offering made from flour and butter), see one of their cultural performances, or book a time to drink a cup of tea with a monk. Book any of these experiences with the local tour company  Monastery Stay .

Picnic on the Choijin Lama Temple Lawn

Away from the crowds in Sukhbaatar Square, ease into a quiet afternoon reading, relaxing, or eating lunch on the lawn at the Choijin Lama Temple Museum. A quiet oasis in the center of the urban hustle and bustle, pick up food from  Millie’s Espresso  just next door.

Take a Picture in Front of the Ulaanbaatar Sign

Were you even in Ulaanbaatar if you don’t get a picture with the famous red sign? Ulaanbaatar translates to Red Hero and this sign in front of the National Academic Drama Theater is just that.

Write in Your Journal, Sketch, or Paint at Yavuukhulan Park

Named after the great poet Begziin Yavuukhulan, this tiny park is a great place to visit in the city. Sit on one of the benches, watch the fountain, and channel your creative vibes from the master himself.

If you need to pick up art supplies, there’s a great art shop at this  location .

Play at Misheel Park

Located behind Misheel Expo in Yarmag city, the Misheel park is a great place in Ulaanbaatar for families and kids. There are wooden play areas, walking paths, and picnic areas ideal for a slow day spent along the Tuul River.

Pay Your Respects to Mongolian Culture the Camel Caravan Statue

Close to the National Sport Stadium and Winter Palace of the Bogd Khan, the Camel Caravan Statue is one of the most iconic and recongnizable statues in Ulaanbaatar. This Silk Road monument pays respect to the camel herders and nomadic families of the Gobi Desert who have moved this way for centuries. The statue is easily seen from the road, so keep your eyes on the lookout after crossing the Peace Bridge on Chinggis Avenue heading towards Zaisan. The statue is at the main intersection near the Naadam Center.

Look for the “Stalin of the Steppe” Statue at the National University of Mongolia

Buzzing with young, inspiring Mongolians, walking around the National University of Mongolia is a fun way to rub elbows with the future leaders of the country. Look for the famous Statue of Khorloogiin Choibalsan, the leader of the Mongolian People’s Republic from 1939 until 1952. A close friend of the communist party, Choibalsan is considered the “Stalin of the Steppe” and is a stark reminder of how far the country has come and how hopeful locals are of the future generations.

Early Risers and Photographers Love Ulaanbaatar’s Morning Street

Also called Tourist Street or Juulchin Street, this block of cafes, restaurants, coffee shops, and brightly colored buildings is one of the cutest streets to walk in Ulaanbaatar. The shops here open early, so it’s a terrific place to come if you’re an early riser. Additionally, there are always people taking photos here, and it’s not uncommon to see bride and grooms and their wedding parties! My favorite café on Morning Street is Anjuna Book & Art Café and Evelyn’s Oven also serves some of the most delicious pastries in town. Just around the corner from Morning Street is the National Museum of Mongolia and if you plan accordingly you can have a walk, coffee, and visit the museum all before lunchtime.

Search for Ulaanbaatar’s Best Statues

As you’ve noticed by now, Ulaanbaatar is full of statues that commemorate poets, politicians, revolutionaries, the Mongol empire and even Genghis Khan himself. They also represent herding culture, wildlife, and the country’s history as an important hub along the Silk Road. Besides the other statues and monuments already on this list, here are a few more of Ulaanbaatar’s best historical monuments I urge you to go out in search of.

The National Museum of Mongolia was established in 1924, the largest museum in Mongolia requires 1-3 hours when seeing the displays. It is advisable to visit the museum before starting your countryside tour. It will be your first introduction to the country and learn a lot about Mongolian culture, history, daily life, custom, and ethnics. Mongolia is extremely rich in historical heritage. The displays date back to the 700,000 years ago Paleolithic Age through the next historical periods such as Mesolithic Age, Neolithic Age, The Bronze Age, ancient Mongol States, Great Mongol Empire, Soviet Mongolia to the present day. 46000 items related to Mongolian history, ethnicity, traditional clothing, and daily life ornaments of the nomads are on display. The Museum location is just next to Sukhbaatar Square at the heart of Ulaanbaatar.

Dinosaur Museums in Ulaanbaatar

There are two dinosaur museums in Ulaanbaatar. The Central Museum of Mongolian Dinosaurs is located in the downtown while the other museum in Hunnu Mall on the way to the airport. Both museums are quite impressive as all the fossils showcased are originals and complete skeletons of all shapes, sizes, and appetites, but do not require much time. Some of the species were found only in Mongolia. The endemic species, complete skeletons, and rare findings make Mongolia the third important paleontological site in the world. In addition to the museums, you can have a chance to explore the dinosaur fossils in nature while touring in the Gobi desert. Nowadays, where might one find actual dinosaur fossils in nature? Sukhbaatar Square

An equestrian statue of revolutionary hero Sukhbaatar features in the center of the square, who led the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Movement in 1921. The square neighbors with Government House in its north. In front of the Government House is a big bronze statue of Genghis Khan flanked by Ugudei Khan and Kubilai Khan Statues. The backyard of the government house bears the state stamp figure and is open to the public where you can chill in the garden. There are other main buildings around the square such as the City Hall, Stock Exchange, Cultural Palace, Drama Theater, museums, and the main post office. The square is a big open space in the middle of the town where the locals meet, chat, ride bikes, and skate. There is something happens most of the days; some evens, wedding, school graduation celebration, and parades.

Choijin Lama Temple Museum

Choijin Lama (a monastic title) Temple Museum is an architectural masterpiece of the 19th and 20th centuries. It is the only temple could remain without much destruction during the communist purge. The museum location is convenient in the downtown, just 10 minutes walking in the south of Central Square/Sukhbaatar Square. The Red sect Buddhism temple was erected by Mongolian architects between 1904 and 1908 in honor of an influential monk who was a younger brother of Mongolian last king VIII Bogd Gegeen. The temple was active until 1936 and closed in 1938 by the communists. Since 1942, it has been serving as a temple museum, displaying more than 8600 items such as the work of master painters, cast carvings, Mongolian silk appliqué, embroidery, Tsam dancing mask, and sculptures in the six temples.

Ger Making Factory

The traditional dwelling Ger is a circular, round-shaped wooden framework covered with felt. It is collapsible, easy to build and dismantle, stable, warm in winter and cool in summer, a perfect dwelling suited to the nomadic life. It has been used by nomads for over 10000 years. People make gers using local wood and animal-derived products. Visiting the regular ger making factories is one of the non-touristic things where you will see how the gers are made and decorated.

Zaisan Hill Memorial

Zaisan Hill Memorial is on the foothill of strictly protected Bogd Khaan Mountain located in the south of Ulaanbaatar neighboring Buddha's Garden. It is a viewpoint where you will see the panoramic views of Ulaanbaatar after about 10 min climb on stairs. Either the night climb worth when seeing the city lights and breathe the cooling air.

Narantuul Market

Narantuul is a huge local market that consists of an indoor market and an outdoor market. The indoor market sells food, beauty amenities, cleaning products, housewares, utensils, and clothes. The outdoor market is in the foreigners’ attention as it sells some authentic Mongolian things: horse tacks, ger furniture, traditional shoes/boots, hats including furry winter ones, Buddhist and Shamanic items, traditional deels, carpets, fabric/sewing, processed animal skin, and souvenirs. Not only Mongolian goods, but the market is also full of Chinese products of different qualities. The traditional felt dwelling Ger parts are sold in the extension area to the east of the market. The vendors tell fair prices for the goods and tend not to bargain a lot it does in some other touristy Asian countries. Therefore, do not quibble over the price or do little. The market is notorious for pickpockets. Keep your belongings safe!

Tumen Ekh Ensemble

Tumen Ekh is one of the most entertaining, authentic, and must-see things in Ulaanbaatar. The performance shows throat singing, contortion, drawling song, Tsam religious dance, short song, and colorful traditional dances. There are many Mongolian folk songs and dance bands performing in every corner of the world and have been rated good. Mongolians, particularly performance actors are known in the world as the people wrapped in silk. If you decide to visit Mongolia, do not miss the opportunity to watch the show in their homeland. The show always gets good compliments from the audience.

Bogd Khan Palace Museum

There were eight people named Bogd Khaan (living Buddha), lived between 1639 and 1924. The Bogd Khan Palace was built for 8th living Buddha Bogd Jabuzandamba, who was Mongolian last religious leader and king of the state. The Palace was built between 1893 and 1906. It consists of a two-story European style building and ten temple style buildings. The king lived in this Winter Palace for more than 20 years with his queen Dondogdulam. Since 1926, the palace has been serving as a museum. The two-story wooden house displays items used by the queen and king such as some collections, dresses, a ger, and their rooms, etc. while the temple buildings show wonderful religious masterpieces and artifacts from the 17th to 20th century.

Zanabazar Fine Art Museum

The Zanabazar Fine Art Museum named after Zanabazar who was a pre-eminent religious leader and artist in the 17th century. It is worth visiting the museum if you would like to see Mongolian art and understand some cultural insights. The museum has nine halls: antique hall, hall of Zanabazar's creation, hall displaying paintings drawn with natural colors or tanka, appliqué hall, hall of tsam religious dance, fine arts hall and hall of Maider Buddha. The Treasure's Fond of Mongolia registered over 200 artistic creations as they rated the creations rare and unrepeatable. 50 of them are on display in the museum.

Gandantegchilen Monastery

Tibetan, Chinese, and Mongolian style monastery Gandantegchilen is active all year round. The monastery was established in 1835. It is one of the places you should visit in Ulaanbaatar. Except for its main activity and seeing the believers in their local worshiping moods, a 26, 5 m statue of Migjid Janraisag Buddha (Buddhist Bodhisattva) in one of the monastery's old temple is another thing of interest. It's one of the biggest indoor statues in the world. The monastery located among the ger district in the downtown of Ulaanbaatar, the first and the oldest permanent residing area of the city.

Buy Cashmere

Mongolia is a paradise for cashmere lovers. Mongolia has 25 million goats produce high-quality cashmere. Cashmere clothes made in Mongolia are getting famous for their natural softness, warm quality, and fashion. Dear cashmere users, please do not ignore the opportunity to buy high-quality products at a reasonable price compared to other countries. A first private museum in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia established in 1990, displays 11000 intellectual creations of over 130 countries. The museum intends to show creations made using methods of all scientific sectors. You can touch and play with some of the exhibits at the museum. The majority of the museum visitors are amazed by intellectual work and able to buy some puzzles, traditional games, and magic tricks at the museum shop.

Zaisan Hill Memorial was built between 1971 and 1974 to show gratitude to the Soviet Union (USSR) for its assistance during Mongolia’s fight against Japanese forces. It features a memorial complex honoring the Soviet soldiers who lost their lives during WWII.

Additionally, you can enjoy sweeping views over Ulaanbaatar as you take in the city skyline, the Tuul River, and the surrounding hills and mountains.

Just note that to reach the top you’ll need to walk up 600 steps, though you can cheat a bit by going inside the mall at the base of the hill. Here there is an elevator that can get you about halfway up.

6. Amarbayasgalant Monastery (Selenge Province)

The main reasons to visit this Buddhist monastery include its cultural significance and stunning traditional architecture with intricate artwork, detailed carvings, and vibrant murals.

In terms of design, the Amarbayasgalant Monastery complex features several temples, prayer halls, dormitories for monks, and administrative buildings — with the most impressive structure being the Zuu Temple , which houses a large statue of Buddha Amitayus.

Amarbayasgalant Monastery was originally constructed in the 18th century to honor Zanabazar, a spiritual leader and an influential figure in Mongolian Buddhism.

7. Gobi Desert (Several Provinces)

No list of the best places to visit in Mongolia would be complete without mentioning the Gobi Desert. Personally, this was a main highlight for me when I visited Mongolia thanks to its epic scenery, diverse landscapes, and outdoor adventure opportunities.

As the Gobi Desert is vast, it actually spans several provinces, including:

• Bayankhongor Province
• Dornogovi Province

This also means you’ll encounter a wide variety of landscapes: open spaces, rolling sand dunes, rocky cliffs, canyons, and steppe grasslands that seem to stretch on forever.

In terms of other worthwhile activities in Mongolia, keep your eyes peeled for snow leopards, Bactrian camels, Gobi bears, Gobi gazelles, and numerous bird species.

Speaking of camels, did you know Mongolia is one of the few places in the world where you can see two-humped camels? During my three days in the Gobi, I saw these rare camels multiple times, so your odds of spotting them are pretty good.

Something really neat about the Mongolian Gobi Desert is that it’s the largest dinosaur fossil reservoir in the world, according to UNESCO . I’ll share more about how to explore this when we discuss Bayanzag!

8. Baga Gazriin Chuluu Nature Reserve (Dundgovi Province)

I’ll never forget driving through the Gobi Desert and approaching Baga Gazriin Chuluu Nature Reserve. Suddenly, vast open space turned to giant rock formations and granite outcroppings begging to be climbed and photographed.

Interestingly, only 5% of the Gobi Desert is covered in sand , and this reserve in particular showcases a landscape so different from what you might typically picture when thinking of a desert.

It’s recommended to camp overnight so that you can be perfectly situated for evening stargazing and a morning sunrise hike. Also be on the lookout for snow leopards, argali sheep, ibex, and various bird species.

9. Tsagaan Suvarga (Dundgovi Province)

Also known as White Stupa, this unique geological formation showcases giant limestone cliffs that look like a row of stacked stupas due to erosion and weathering over millions of years.

Not only does the shape of the cliffs make them striking, but also the colors, as they range from white to orange and red. Definitely bring your camera to take photos from a variety of angles as you walk the designated paths.

Another highlight of Tsagaan Suvarga: the panoramic views of the surrounding desert landscape and Mongolian countryside!

10. Ongi Monastery Ruins (Dundgovi Province)

During the late 1930s, a series of political repressions and purges known as the Mongolian Purges took place. They were the result of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and his policies that aimed to eliminate perceived threats to his regime and establish tighter control over Mongolia.

This included replacing religious beliefs with communist ideology. It is estimated that thousands of Buddhist lamas were killed or imprisoned during the purges and over 700 monasteries were destroyed.

The Ongi Monastery was sadly one of these, though it is still one of the top places to visit in Mongolia due to its cultural significance as well as its architectural beauty. The latter can still be seen despite the tragedy, especially as work is being done to restore the monastery.

Established in the 18th century, Ongi Monastery was one of the largest monastic complexes in Mongolia until its destruction. At its peak, it housed over 1,000 monks and consisted of two main sections, the Barlim Monastery and the Khutagt Monastery.

Pilgrims would come from all over Mongolia and beyond to visit the sacred site, see the ornate temples, and view huge collections of religious artifacts.

Today, the ruins of the temples, stupas, and other monastery structures offer a glimpse into the rich history and spiritual significance of Buddhism in Mongolia while allowing you to take in the beauty of the vast Mongolian steppe.

11. Bayanzag (Ömnögovi Province)

Also known as the Flaming Cliffs, Bayanzag is a famous paleontological site within the Gobi Desert. Everything from dinosaur eggs to the remains of various dinosaur species has been found here.

You’ll be able to explore the site, learn about the region’s prehistoric past at a small nearby museum and, if you’re lucky, you might even spot ongoing excavations.

Another highlight of Bayanzag is hiking around the striking red sandstone “Flaming Cliffs.” Sunrise and sunset are particularly amazing here.

12. Orkhon Valley (Arkhangai Province)

A UNESCO World Heritage Site , the Orkhon Valley is one of the top Mongolia tourist spots thanks to its historical, cultural, and natural significance.

First of all, it’s breathtaking with expansive grasslands, rolling hills, winding rivers, and picturesque waterfalls.

In fact, it’s home to Mongolia’s largest waterfall, Ulaan Tsutgalan (Orkhon Waterfall), which measures about 10 meters (33 feet) wide and 20 meters (66 feet) tall. It’s truly one of the most beautiful places in Mongolia!

Hiking, fishing, camping, and other outdoor adventure activities are popular here — as is staying in a Mongolian ger to learn more about traditional nomadic life.

The Orkhon Valley is also one of the more important historical places in Mongolia, as it once sat at the center of the ancient Mongol Empire. Today, you can explore various archaeological sites — including the ruins of ancient cities, burial mounds, and stone monuments.

13. Khorgo-Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur National Park (Arkhangai Province)

The thing that makes this protected area one of the top tourist spots in Mongolia is its incredible natural beauty, with its two main features being Khorgo , a dormant volcano, and Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur (White Lake), a pristine alpine lake.

If you love adventure, one of the best things to do in Mongolia is to hike to the top of Khorgo and take in panoramic views of the surrounding volcanic landscapes. Follow this with some camping along the shore of the lake, which is also a great spot for boating and fishing.

Other fun activities in Khorgo-Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur National Park that make it worth the trip include hiking other scenic trails, horseback riding, and trying to spot wildlife like ibex, argali sheep, and various bird species.

14. Tsenkher Hot Springs (Arkhangai Province)

Looking to enjoy wellness travel in Mongolia? The Tsenkher Hot Springs are renowned for their therapeutic benefits and are one of the best places to visit in Mongolia.

The temperature of the water can reach up to 86°C (187°F), but it is usually cooled down for bathing.

You’ll be able to soak in several pools with water containing minerals that are believed to have healing properties for certain skin conditions, joint pain, and other ailments.

The hot springs offer the perfect way to unwind after a day hiking around the local forests and meadows or kayaking and fishing on the nearby Tsenkher River.

And for a dose of local culture, consider staying overnight in a ger camp!

15. Kharkhorin (Övörkhangai Province)

Established by Genghis Khan in 1220, Kharkhorin was once the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire, then known as Karakorum.

Strategically located along the Silk Road, it was a place of trade and cultural exchanges between East and West. Interestingly, even famed explorer Marco Polo visited !

While much of the city was destroyed and abandoned in the 14th century following the collapse of the Mongol Empire and subsequent invasions, today it remains a fascinating place to explore Mongolian history.

Here you can visit archaeological remains — including the remnants of the palace of Ogedei Khan — and visit the Kharakhorum Museum .

Another highlight is visiting the Erdene Zuu Monastery , which sits just outside the ruins. Built in the 16th century, it’s considered one of the oldest and most important monastic complexes in Mongolia.

16. Khögnö Khan Strictly Protected Area (Bulgan Province)

The Khögnö Khan Strictly Protected Area – sometimes also called Khögnö Khan Nature Reserve or Khögnö Khan National Park – is one of the top places of interest in Mongolia as it’s an important conservation area showcasing a variety of ecosystems and attractions.

Named after the park’s Khögnö Khan Mountain, you can explore mountain ranges, steppe grasslands, sand dunes, and rocky outcrops.

In terms of Mongolia sightseeing in the park, you’ll definitely want to visit the Elsen Tasarkhai Sand Dunes . These dunes stretch for 80 kilometers (50 miles) and are often referred to as the “Mini Gobi.”

It’s the perfect place for some sandboarding – one of the more unique things to do in Mongolia – and taking in a gorgeous sunset.

Other fun things to do in Mongolia in this park include hiking, horseback riding, camping, and trying to spot wildlife like argali sheep, Siberian ibex, and numerous bird species.

17. Altai Mountains (Bayan-Ölgii Province)

In my opinion, the Altai Mountains offer some of the most jaw-dropping scenery I’ve ever seen. Prepare to be wowed by the snowcapped peaks and colorful mountains that stretch dramatically toward the puffy clouds above. Crystal rivers cut through a landscape dotted with gers, livestock, and colorful wildflowers.

When visiting, you’ll fly into Ulgii (Ölgii) – the capital city of the Bayan-Ölgii Province in western Mongolia – to begin your exploration. Within this mountain-hugged city, you can enjoy hotels, restaurants, markets, and museums, though I highly recommend also driving out into the countryside.

One thing to realize is this area is predominantly inhabited by the nomadic Kazakh ethnic group. You’ll be able to immerse yourself in local Kazakh culture by staying in a ger with a Kazakh family, witnessing eagle hunting demonstrations, experiencing Kazakh music, viewing local handicraft displays, and eating traditional Kazakh cuisine.

For example, when I stayed with a couple named Asker and Ahgul and their family, they hosted a big welcome feast. This included Beshbarmak, a Kazakh dish of boiled meat and noodles meant to be eaten with the hands.

The family also took me hiking to explore mountain peaks, glacial lakes, and other gorgeous landscapes. In my opinion, the Altai Mountains are home to some of the most amazing hiking trails in the world !

18. Altai Tavan Bogd National Park (Bayan-Ölgii Province)

Building on things to see in Mongolia specifically in the Altai Mountains, Altai Tavan Bogd National Park is highly recommended.

Here you’ll find Mongolia’s highest peak, Khuiten Peak , as well as beautiful lakes, glaciers, and diverse wildlife. Actually, the park is home to the five highest peaks in Mongolia, which form a stunning natural backdrop for activities like hiking, climbing, fishing, and horseback riding.

Another attraction not to miss is Potanin Glacier , the largest glacier in Mongolia. This alongside other glaciers helps to contribute to the park’s stunning topography.

Love wildlife? Have your camera ready as you try to spot ibex, argali sheep, and snow leopards. The park is also a top location for bird-watching in Mongolia.

And for a bit of history, Altai Tavan Bogd National Park features ancient rock art, including petroglyphs (rock carvings) that depict scenes from ancient times.

Work with a local tour operator. Many of the experiences mentioned above, such as staying with a local family in a ger, can be tricky to book on your own – not to mention navigating Mongolia’s roads is very challenging. Then once you’re there you’ll need someone to translate.

When I visited Mongolia, my experiences were booked through a local company called Eternal Landscapes . They were excellent!

Visit Mongolia with a go-with-the-flow attitude. Things will not always go according to plan; but, remember that is all part of the adventure. Instead of getting frustrated, be grateful that you’re experiencing a place many don’t get the chance to.

Carry a lot of protein-rich snacks if you’re a vegetarian. Mongolians eat a very meat-heavy diet. As a vegetarian myself, it would have been nearly impossible to avoid meat had it not been for my local guides who helped prepare special meals for me.

If you don’t have a guide who can help, create a plan for how you’ll stay nourished, particularly outside of Ulaanbaatar where you’ll have a wide range of restaurants.

Adding on this, dairy is also a huge part of the Mongolian diet, so if you’re vegan you’ll need to plan for this as well.

Prep for long drives on bumpy roads. During my trip to Mongolia, there were many days where I spent over four hours in a car – and this typically isn’t on pavement.

Along with downloading audiobooks and podcasts to pass the time, consider how you might make the drive more comfortable, such as with cozy socks or a travel pillow. And if you get carsick you’ll absolutely want to have medication to help combat this.

Always drink the milk or milk tea offered by hosts. When doing a ger homestay, you’ll always be offered some type of warm milk or milk tea drink. This is a gesture meant to welcome and show respect to visitors, and it reflects their nomadic way of life where dairy products are essential and also symbolize abundance. It is rude to refuse it, so drink up.

Pack essential hygiene products. When doing a ger homestay, there isn’t typically a formal bathroom. Instead, you’ll be cleaning yourself up in your ger and going to the bathroom in a small shed with a hole in the ground. While I often found there was soap and water readily available outside, you’ll definitely want to bring toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and biodegradable baby wipes. I also suggest bringing self-care products that don’t require water, like biodegradable face wipes.

Today, the Government of Mongolia, The Nature Conservancy (TNC), and others, announced the launch of Eternal Mongolia – a Project Finance for Permanence (PFP) initiative that will deliver lasting conservation and sustainable community development for the Central Asian country whose vast steppe represents our planet’s last great tract of intact temperate grassland.

Eternal Mongolia is a negotiated partnership that will deliver USD $198 million of new investment over 15 years to support Mongolia’s ambitious goals and deliver lasting conservation and sustainable community development in and around protected areas. This includes a US $71 million transition fund from private and other global donor sources. This transition fund will accelerate Mongolia’s conservation and community development goals, while providing time to develop sustainable financing mechanisms to ensure protected areas can be managed sustainably in the long-term and that Mongolian people benefit from nature, now and for the future.

Eternal Mongolia will dramatically expand and strengthen the effectiveness of the country’s entire National Protected Area network, support sustainable herding practices, invest in the sustainable tourism industry, and set an unprecedented example to the rest of the world about the value of land and freshwater conservation.

The PFP will support local community-driven proposals to safeguard an additional 14.4 million hectares of Mongolia’s lands and waters including intact grasslands, forests, deserts, wetlands and rivers; strengthen the management of all of Mongolia’s National Protected Areas covering 47 million hectares; and extend sustainable and climate-resilient community-managed practices to 34 million hectares outside protected areas.

The President of Mongolia and TNC’s CEO Jennifer Morris met during the UN Climate Change Conference COP28 in Dubai this past November. During this meeting, the President expressed his support of the Eternal Mongolia PFP.

"Mongolians have a longstanding tradition of cherishing and safeguarding nature. In our Vision-2050 long-term development policy, Mongolia outlined innovative strategies and reforms for green development, nature conservation, and sustainable growth,” said OYUN-ERDENE Luvsannamsrai, Prime Minister of Mongolia. “Through global partnership, the PFP will enable Mongolia to achieve its conservation goals and improve livelihoods of rural communities."

“Climate change is here. Mongolians are already experiencing more frequent and severe climate-induced disasters like harsh winters, droughts, and dust storms. Mongolia’s average annual temperature has increased by 2.25C over the last 80 years, more than anywhere else on earth, and we’ve just endured the worst dzud year yet, with millions of livestock lost and people’s livelihoods ruined,” said Bat-Erdene Bat-Ulzii, Minister of Environment and Tourism. “With Eternal Mongolia, we see a proven tool to tackle the impacts of climate change. The PFP will work to boost the green economy, support the growth of nature-based tourism—the fastest growing sector— and invest in sustainable livelihoods.”

Eternal Mongolia is based on a negotiated agreement and shared plan that identifies the activities needed to deliver Mongolia’s ambitious conservation and community development goals. Through Eternal Mongolia, TNC and the government will work together to develop finance mechanisms that will provide the funding needed to deliver lasting conservation and sustainable community development. Donor funding will be managed by the Mongolian Nature's Legacy Foundation , an independent conservation trust fund set up specifically for the Eternal Mongolia PFP. Government funding will continue to be managed by the Government.

“A shortage of sustainable funding opportunities was a limitation for Mongolia to achieve its conservation goals. Therefore, Eternal Mongolia, a sustainable finance program, within the framework of Enduring Earth conservation initiative, is commencing in Mongolia with an internationally proven solution to fill this financial gap,” said Mr. Boldoo Magvan, Board Chair of the Mongolian Nature’s Legacy Foundation. “Through the Mongolian Nature’s Legacy Foundation, which is based on a transparent Conservation Trust Fund model, we will invest effectively in conservation priorities, identified by Eternal Mongolia.”

Mongolia established itself as a world conservation leader 30 years ago by committing to a vision revolutionary for its time: to protect 30% of its lands—a goal now shared around the world. Eternal Mongolia unlocks all the funding and policy commitments needed for Mongolia to ensure its 30% conservation target will be met by 2030 while providing a secure and economic future for Mongolians. Eternal Mongolia will dramatically expand conservation of one of the world’s most intact and connected temperate grasslands, sweeping sand dunes, rugged mountains, pristine lakes and over 13,000 kilometres of winding rivers that support rare wildlife and feed much of central and northern Asia.

Like the well-known rainforests of the world, grasslands provide enormous ‘hidden’ benefits to the entire planet through their ability to sequester carbon from the atmosphere. Mongolia’s grasslands store 14-15 million tons of carbon, and yet they are one of the planet’s most imperiled landscapes. As the only large-scale habitat of this type in Asia, they provide a rare refuge for native wildlife such as argali sheep, gazelles, demoiselle cranes, cinereous vultures and saiga—an endangered antelope.

As well as protected, rare, and threatened wildlife, Mongolia’s grasslands are home to 200,000 nomadic herding families, some of the last remaining nomadic cultures on Earth. “The success of Eternal Mongolia is not solely about protecting Mongolia’s landscapes but doing so in a way that honors and values generations of traditional knowledge while building sustainable livelihoods and futures," said Munkhbat Tserendorj, Executive Director for Homyn Talyn Takhi NGO. "Mongolia’s nomadic herding families are integral to the success of Eternal Mongolia, and their leadership is critical to how these protected areas will be maintained for years to come.”

Eternal Mongolia demonstrates what can be accomplished through partnerships that promote community-led conservation. Local communities will play a key role in helping develop and implement conservation plans.

Dr. Tungalag Ulambayar, a community-based conservation partner of Eternal Mongolia and Country Director of Mongolia representative office, the Zoological Society of London, emphasized, "As a social scientist and conservation practitioner, I strongly support the Eternal Mongolia project's dedication to community-based natural resource management in Mongolia. This approach enables herder communities to sustainably manage local ecosystems while upholding their traditional rights to natural resources in their nutag or home areas."

Eternal Mongolia is an initiative of Enduring Earth, an ambitious collaboration between The Nature Conservancy, The Pew Charitable Trusts, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and ZOMALAB that works in partnership with nations and communities as they accelerate and amplify conservation for a more sustainable, prosperous future for people and planet. The PFP approach is a proven model that has already protected over 100 million hectares of lands, ocean, and freshwater around the world. Eternal Mongolia is TNC’s third PFP and its first as part of Enduring Earth.
