U.S. News Insider Tip: For the best birding experience, visit Wildlife Drive and its trails at low tide. Or take a sunset kayak tour with Tarpon Bay Explorers. – Chelle Koster Walton, Contributor, Travel

Named for a Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist and conservationist, the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge occupies more than 6,400 acres on Sanibel and Captiva, plus offshore waters and islands. On Sanibel, it shelters mangrove forests, marshes and seagrass beds, as well as animals like alligators, bobcats and more than 240 species of birds. In fact, for herons, white pelicans , warblers and ospreys, this refuge is an important stop along their southern migratory path.

Bowman's Beach Bowman's Beach free

Situated on the west end of the island, Bowman's is well known for having beautiful, abundant shells. Recent travelers found the best method is to step waist-deep in the water and dig your feet into the sand to find the shells. (You may want to wear water shoes to protect your feet.) Or plan your shell hunt for low tide, especially after a storm.

Beachgoers routinely praised Bowman's for its excellent shelling, gorgeous sunsets and expansive sands that let visitors find their own spots with ease. Several also enjoyed riding their bikes to the beach, saying that the ride is easy along the nearby path. Other reviewers reported spotting dolphins and manatees.

Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum

The Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum expanded in 2020 with 11 different aquarium exhibits on the ground floor showcasing mollusks, including a giant octopus, living shells and touch pools. Unfortunately, Hurricane Ian flooded that level, but the museum temporarily opened its original second-floor exhibits in February 2023. Its Great Hall of Shells showcases specimens from around the world and helps identify any treasures you might have uncovered at the nearby seashore. Popular exhibits include the sailors' valentines (19th-century shell art that Barbadian women designed for visiting sailors to take home to loved ones) and a depiction of what life was like for the Calusa Native Americans, who once lived near the Southwest Gulf and used shells for tools and building material.

Before the hurricane, travelers said the museum exceeded their expectations. They appreciated the hands-on exhibits and found the displays, as well as the museum employees, to be informative.

Captiva Island Captiva Island free

U.S. News Insider Tip: Take a short walk off the beach to roam the historic Chapel by the Sea and its cemetery. Here, visitors often leave seashells rather than flowers at headstones. In season, the chapel holds nondenominational Sunday religious services. – Chelle Koster Walton, Contributor, Travel

Some people think of Sanibel and its quirky little sister island, Captiva, as interchangeable. True, they're both quiet spots with great shorelines and are connected by a short bridge, but there are a few differences. Here's a cheat sheet: Sanibel has better shelling on its beaches; quirkier Captiva is known for its water sports and destination resorts. Souvenir shopping on both islands is fairly evenly matched, but Sanibel has an inside edge on art galleries. In short, consider spending your days on Sanibel, then hop over to Captiva for a boat excursion or dinner on the waterfront.

Lighthouse Beach Park & Fishing Pier Lighthouse Beach Park & Fishing Pier free

The Sanibel Lighthouse has been in service since 1884 to light the entrance into San Carlos Bay. Now, this iconic Sanibel Island landmark on the island's eastern tip, nearly 140 years old, is a little worse for wear. One of its four legs got sheared off at the bottom by Hurricane Ian in September 2022. It has since been found and is being repaired, standing ever stronger as a symbol of island resiliency. The two picturesque, historic lighthouse keeper homes were swept away. The light tower serves as the centerpiece of a popular recreational area that fronts both the gulf and bay, now closed with no projected reopening date.

In addition to the lighthouse, this 32-acre is also home to Sanibel's most developed beach. It's popular with windsurfers, anglers and families, who take advantage of its picnic area, grills, shaded pavilions, restrooms, showers, bayside fishing pier and nature trail. Parking is $5 per hour, but cyclists and pedestrians can access it for free.

Sanibel Island Farmers Market Sanibel Island Farmers Market free

Like several businesses on Sanibel Island, the seasonal farmers market, which started in 2008 and featured more than 50 vendors, has temporarily relocated. Normally a Sunday morning fixture at the Sanibel City Hall grounds, the market currently sets up at the parking lot for Jerry's Foods on Periwinkle Way . It reopened in January 2023 in the smaller venue with 15 vendors. Owners intend to return to the market's traditional location as soon as the city gives the go-ahead.

Besides organic and other produce brought in from nearby fields, market vendors sell ready-made food from stands and food trucks, plus cheese, local seafood, flowers, plants, honey, beverages, baked goods, crafts and a wide variety of products. Recent visitors raved about the variety. The fresh-made guacamole was a hit with several.

Sanibel Historical Museum & Village Sanibel Historical Museum & Village

This historic village has been cobbled together since 1984. Of the complex's 10 buildings, nine were relocated from other parts of Sanibel to the present site so that they could be preserved. The buildings date from 1896 to 1927 and include a schoolhouse, several cottages, a tea room and a packing house. Each building has audio recordings to help tell the story of Sanibel's history, which spans hundreds of years. There's information about the Calusa tribes as well as Sanibel's fishermen and farmers. Currently, the village is undergoing rebuilding after Hurricane Ian with no set reopening date.

Travelers who visited before the hurricane were impressed with the museum. They enjoyed seeing the evolution of Sanibel over time and highly recommend watching the introductory video and taking the guided tour.

Blind Pass Beach Blind Pass Beach free

U.S. News Insider Tip: When the winds whip up, surfers head to Blind Pass Beach to catch the best waves on the islands. – Chelle Koster Walton, Contributor, Travel

Among the first two public beach accesses to reopen in February 2023 during hurricane recovery, Blind Pass Beach spans across both Sanibel and Captiva islands. It's a great place to find shells, fish from the bridge, sunbathe or watch the sunset. One thing you might want to skip at this beach? Swimming. Blind Pass is susceptible to strong currents. Nevertheless, it's a favorite among vacationers for its beauty and excellent collection of shells. Visitors do warn, however, that parking is tricky and describe the facilities as average, as there are only restrooms and outdoor showers on the Captiva side.

Periwinkle Way Periwinkle Way free

U.S. News Insider Tip: Head to Jerry's Foods complex of shops for the most concentrated retail therapy right now, plus free Wi-Fi. The grocery store's restaurant is one of the island's best dining bargains. – Chelle Koster Walton, Contributor, Travel

The island's main, two-lane thoroughfare is home to several restaurants and shopping opportunities, although many are still undergoing hurricane recovery following September 2022's Ian. So, there's no one reason to recommend you visit; there's a good chance you'll end up along Periwinkle at some point in time during your trip.

Tarpon Bay Explorers Tarpon Bay Explorers

U.S. News Insider Tip : Sunset is the best time for birdwatching at Tarpon Bay's rookeries, when ibises, pelicans, herons and cormorants come in to roost for the night. The company normally offers sunset paddling tours and nature cruises. – Chelle Koster Walton, Contributor, Travel

For more than 20 years, Tarpon Bay Explorers has been running the recreation concession for the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge at its Tarpon Bay Recreation Area campus, just a couple of miles from the refuge's main campus. On the banks of Tarpon Bay, the company currently rents kayak, canoes and stand-up paddleboards, and conducts kayaking and stand-up paddleboard tours into the bay and its offshoot, Commodore Creek Trail, through a mangrove canopy teeming with birds and fish.

BIG ARTS BIG ARTS

Artful communities with galleries and a once-vital performing arts scene, Sanibel and Captiva have concentrated their cultural offerings at the BIG ARTS campus. It first started at a grassroots level in 1979, and since has grown to inhabit a contemporary facility that debuted in 2021. Its high-tech performing arts hall hosts everything from film series to musical and theater performances. Note that the 2023 season for its Performing Arts Series has been canceled due to Hurricane Ian. Artists hailing from Florida and elsewhere mount their exhibits in the main and mezzanine art galleries, where you'll also find a lovely gift shop selling locally created works. BIG ARTS also hosts various workshops both in-person and via Zoom.

Visitors remark about the grandeur of BIG ARTS' performing arts hall and the quality of its visual art exhibits.

Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife

The Clinic for Rehabilitation of Wildlife was founded by Shirley Walter in 1968 after she realized there was no facility on Sanibel to aid injured local wildlife. Since then, CROW has nursed thousands of animal patients and cared for more than 200 species. The clinic's specialists provide emergency medicine, surgery and rehabilitation to animals. Each year, they help about 5,000 animals. CROW is also a teaching hospital where veterinary students can hone their skills.

You don't have to be a wounded bird or student to visit. CROW's Visitor Education Center has interactive exhibits to teach visitors about the clinic's history and how the organization cares for animals. You can also attend daily presentations given by a staff member and an Animal Ambassador – recovered patients that cannot be released due to their injuries. Presentations explain how wildlife are rescued and give more information about the different patients. You can even go on a Wildlife Walk, which is a guided tour of the hospital. Note that programming will return gradually to CROW once it reopens its Visitor Education Center around mid-March 2023. (Currently, its gift shop has reopened.)

10 Top-Rated Attractions & Things to Do on Sanibel Island

Written by Lana Law Updated Dec 23, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Beaches, wildlife, and nature are some of what draws visitors to Sanibel Island. As you drive over the Sanibel Causeway, you can almost feel yourself begin to relax. The busy roads of Fort Myers, just 30 minutes away, transform into small two-lane roads as you drive through the lush vegetation to beautiful beaches, wildlife preserves, and funky restaurants.

Leave the car parked and take the extensive network of bike trails to many of the tourist attractions or even out to dinner. You won't find typical high-rises or high pressure on Sanibel. Life here is about living and slowing down.

Step out of life for a while and discover the best things to do on Sanibel Island.

1. See the Animals at J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge

2. explore sanibel lighthouse beach park, 3. search for shells on bowman's beach, 4. grab lunch on a patio at blind pass beach, 5. visit the bailey-matthews national shell museum, 6. sanibel historical museum & village, 7. sanibel causeway, 8. sanibel-captiva conservation foundation nature center, 9. clinic for the rehabilitation of wildlife (crow), 10. grab dinner fixings at the sanibel island farmers market, where to stay in sanibel, map of attractions & things to do on sanibel island.

Roseate spoonbills at JN Ding Darling National Wildlife Preserve

J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge is the premier destination in the area for seeing nature and wildlife. The visitor center, open to the public free of charge, is a great spot to learn about the ecosystems and animals, as well as the history of the refuge's founder, Jay Norwood "Ding" Darling. Informative displays, large picture windows, and the latest wildlife spotting information will get you right up to speed on everything nature related on Sanibel. Still have questions? Just ask the rangers on duty - they are a fountain of information.

To actually get out and see the refuge, take a 90-minute trip on an open-air tram led by a certified naturalist. These guides know where the alligators, wading birds, bobcats, and otters hide out. If you prefer, you can self drive the same route as the tram .

The refuge is noted for its four hiking trails , including the short Indigo Trail and the Wildlife Education Boardwalk. One of the most unique experiences is kayaking or stand up paddleboarding through the mangroves. Bring your own, or rent at one of the gear shops on the island. Other popular things to do include fishing and bird-watching. Note that the nature drive is closed on Fridays to allow the wildlife to roam.

Sanibel Lighthouse Beach Park

Visible for miles around, the historic 112-foot-high Sanibel Lighthouse will likely pique your curiosity. Head to the eastern tip of Sanibel Island for a visit. Not only will you find the lighthouse dating from 1884, you'll also find a beautiful white-sand beach, one of the finest on the island. The beach wraps around a point, with one small section looking out towards the Sanibel Causeway and another much larger and longer stretch of beach facing the Gulf of Mexico.

The park has picnic tables, large trees that provide shade, restroom facilities, and showers. Also in the park is the Sanibel Fishing Pier, where you'll have a good chance of catching small fish. There are two parking areas: If you are interested mainly in the lighthouse or fishing, use the northern lot. If you are only going for the beach, use the larger southern lot.

Bowman's Beach

Bowman's Beach is a stunning stretch of white sand backed by a lovely natural area. The beach is a perfect place to visit for a family outing . You'll have no problem finding your own perfect patch of sand to set up.

Shelling, swimming, and generally lazing in the sun are the most popular things to do here. Stop by the local grocery store and stock up for a full day of fun. The park offers shaded picnic tables, barbecues, restrooms, and a children's playground in the forested area behind the beach.

The beach is in full sun all day, so you'll need to bring your chair and umbrella. Be prepared to carry your gear about a quarter mile from the parking lot. The trail is easy, and shaded part of the way, but it can feel long if you are carrying equipment. There is plenty of parking here, and the parking fee is per hour.

Blind Pass Beach

If you like spending time on the beach, grabbing lunch on a patio under the palms, and then wandering back to your beach chair, the beautiful stretch of beach at Blind Pass is the place for you. You might barely notice the small cluster of buildings at Blind Pass as you drive along, except the beach houses and retail are painted in colorful hues, making it hard to miss this little area. Be sure to pull off before you hit the bridge to Captiva Island.

This is one of the best spots on Sanibel for beach walking for the distance you can cover. Blind Pass Beach runs for miles eastward, and gets wider the farther east you go, eventually meeting up with Silver Key Beach, and beyond to Bowman's Beach.

If you are interested in shelling, you may want to cross the bridge to Captiva Island and check out the piles of shells that wash ashore at the breakwater on Turner Beach.

Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum

If you've always wondered what creatures created and lived in all the shells you see along Sanibel's wonderful beaches , the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum is a great place to find out. The museum displays over 30 exhibits showcasing not just the shells of Sanibel, but amazing shells from all over the world.

One of the most fascinating displays is titled Record Breaking Shells, where you can see a massive Goliath Conch. In addition to the shells, the museum also has live tanks in the basement in a classroom setting, where naturalists work with live animals and the audience has a chance to participate.

Sanibel Historical Museum & Village

Had enough sun for the day? A great option away from the beach is the Sanibel Historical Museum. Centrally located on the island, the museum has a wonderful collection of items from Sanibel's past, starting from the Calusa Indians to the Spanish era, the pioneer families from the 1800s, right through to more recent history.

The museum consists of nine historical buildings from the late 1880s to the early 1920s, including a post office and school. These buildings have been meticulously restored to their original condition and inside are interesting artifacts and memorabilia displayed with information panels providing background. Also on show is a fully restored 1927 Model T truck.

Sanibel Causeway from Lighthouse Beach

This three-mile-long causeway provides vehicle access to Sanibel Island, but it's also an impressive site. The roadway rises up 70 feet over beautiful San Carlos Bay and offers views over the aquamarine waters.

The causeway consists of three separate bridges and in between, you'll find Causeway Islands Park . The park is spread over two islands, A & B, and has sandy beaches and is a popular place for stand up paddleboarding. Restroom facilities are available on Island B.

If the wind is up, you'll likely see kiteboarders and their colorful kites high in the air racing back and forth across the water. The conditions here are perfect for this adrenaline-fueled sport, with shallow warm water, consistent winds, and lots of room to run.

Note that there is a one-way toll for traffic heading towards Sanibel.

Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation Nature Center

Just past the National Shell Museum is the SCCF Nature Center. This is an ideal spot to get an understanding of the ecosystems on Sanibel as you walk along the Sanibel River and above the wetlands on raised boardwalks .

The boardwalks form a four-mile maze of trails that feature frequent sightings of turtles, snakes, alligators, and wading birds. Inside the nature center, you'll find displays and aquariums, maps, and all kinds of information on local animals that occupy the islands. Children are admitted free.

Tortoise

CROW is located in the same area as J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge and the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum, and a visit to this attraction is worthwhile if you are visiting either of the other two. A visitor center provides a variety of interactive displays on the wildlife of Southwest Florida along with live animal displays consisting mainly of snakes, turtles, frogs, and an armadillo.

The best way to experience CROW is to time your visit to arrive for a daily presentation, happening most days at 11am. During these presentations, naturalists work with live animal "ambassadors" and speak about how they have been injured and subsequently rehabilitated by the doctors.

Fresh farmers market produce

If your long beach walk has got your tummy rumbling and thinking about what is for lunch or dinner, consider a visit to the Sanibel Island Farmers Market. Every Sunday morning from October through May, this lively outdoor event is the place to search out the freshest veggies, baked goods, seafood, meats, cheeses, and flowers.

The market takes place at Sanibel City Hall on Dunlop Road. Ride your bike or park your car at City Hall, the library, BIG Arts, or the Schoolhouse Theater.

  • A romantic option is the quaint and cozy Song of the Sea Inn . Here, you'll find 30 rooms with screened balconies, and kitchens overlooking an outdoor pool and hot tub area. Breakfast is served on the outdoor patio and is included with the room rate.

The city of  Sanibel Island , located along the Gulf of Mexico just a short drive from Fort Myers, is justly famed for its sunsets, lighthouse, and luxurious resorts.

For family fun, the most popular activity on Sanibel Island is shelling – you barely can walk a step on the beach without indulging in the so-called "Sanibel Stoop" to search for shells.

But there is so much else to do on Sanibel Island – fine accommodations, fresh seafood, fishing, boating, and just plain relaxation, a chance to get away from the hurly burly, a chance to draw closer to nature.

Planning a Trip to Sanibel Island

Sanibel Island walkway.

There are many things to consider when planning a trip to Sanibel Island. As a starting point for planning your trip, consider your answers to the following questions:

  • Are you traveling with kids, a partner, or solo?
  • Where are you coming from?
  • How many days are you planning on staying in the area?
  • What are you most interested in seeing on your visit?

Beach with people sitting umbrellas on the shore.

Keep your answers to these questions in mind as you start to make plans. Sanibel Island has great options for everyone, whether you are looking for a solo trip, a romantic getaway, or fun for the whole family.

Let’s review some of the basics for planning your trip!

How to Get to Sanibel Island

Packed and open suitcase.

You can get to Sanibel Island by driving or by flying to one of the region’s airports.

If you are flying in, you will also need to consider renting a car or taking a taxi from the airport to get to the island. The closest airport is on the mainland, 28 miles away.

Bridge over the water.

Tampa   is about 3 hours north of Sanibel Island via I-75 South.  Orlando   is about 4 hours away, with the most direct route being I-4 West to Highway 17 South to I-75 South. From   Miami , it is a 3-hour drive to Sanibel Island via I-75 North.

Airplanes at the airport.

If you are flying in for your trip, the most convenient airport to arrive at near Sanibel Island is Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers.

Southwest Florida International Airport is located 28 miles from Sanibel Island, with many major airlines flying to and from it. Naples Municipal Airport, Punta Gorda Airport, and Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport are all options within approximately 100 miles of Sanibel Island.

How to Get Around

Person on a bike.

You may be wondering the best way to get around while on Sanibel Island due to its size and separation from the mainland.

Getting around by car, bike, or walking can all be good options depending on where you want to go and how much you want to see during your visit.

Bridge over the water.

If you are driving in for your trip to Sanibel Island, having a car makes it easy to plan day trips to nearby areas like Captiva Island or Fort Myers. It can be difficult and costly to find parking throughout the island.

You must pay to park at local beaches. Trips from the mainland require you to cross the Sanibel Island Causeway, which has a $6 toll ($9 if your vehicle doesn’t have a transponder.)

Couple biking on Sanibel Island.

Riding a bike is the most convenient way to get around Sanibel Island. The island has over 20 miles of paved bike paths that can be utilized to access attractions and beaches.

Bikes are also an affordable option—many hotels and vacation rentals in the area have free rentals you can use during your stay.

If your accommodations don’t have bike rentals, shops on the island rent out bikes and helmets at reasonable prices.

Sanibel Island pathway to beach.

Depending on where you book your hotel or vacation rental, walking can be a convenient and free way to travel to Sanibel Island beaches, attractions, and restaurants.

If this sounds ideal for your trip, book accommodations nearby your top places to visit.

Trip Duration

Sanibel Island shells 2023.

Sanibel Island is full of things to do, so you may be wondering how many days you should plan to be on this island paradise. The answer depends on how you want to pace your trip.

If you are short on time or prefer to see the island at a faster pace, 2 to 3 days will allow you to see all the top hits if you move quickly.

In general, if you want to see top sights while still having ample time to relax at the beach, a 5 to 6-day stay is optimal.

Sanibel Island enjoys a subtropical climate characterized by warm temperatures, abundant sunshine, and occasional rainfall throughout the year.

The island experiences two primary seasons: the dry season and the wet season.

During the dry season, which typically spans from late fall to early spring, Sanibel Island experiences cooler temperatures and minimal rainfall, making it an ideal time for outdoor activities and beach excursions.

The winter months, in particular, offer pleasant weather conditions with average temperatures ranging from the 60s to the 70s Fahrenheit (15°C to 25°C).

In contrast, the wet season, occurring from late spring to early fall, brings warmer temperatures and higher humidity levels to Sanibel Island.

While afternoon showers and thunderstorms are common during this period, they often pass quickly, allowing visitors to enjoy the island’s attractions and outdoor adventures.

Best Months to Visit Sanibel Island

The best time to visit Sanibel Island largely depends on individual preferences and desired activities.

However, many travelers prefer the dry season, spanning from late fall to early spring, for its pleasant weather and comfortable temperatures.

The months of November through April typically offer sunny days, mild temperatures, and lower humidity levels, making it an ideal time for beachcombing, shelling, and outdoor exploration.

For those seeking fewer crowds and discounted accommodations, the shoulder seasons of late spring and early fall can also be appealing.

While temperatures may be warmer during these months, visitors can still enjoy a variety of recreational activities and take advantage of offseason rates.

It’s important to note that peak tourist season on Sanibel Island occurs during the winter months, particularly from December to February, when visitors from colder climates flock to the island to escape the cold weather.

1. Go Shelling on A Beach, Specifically Turner Beach (Blind Pass Beach)

This beach sits in the middle of Sanibel and Captiva, making it one of the best things to do in Sanibel! Here the currents are strong- so make sure to be careful. But with strong currents means wonderful shells!

The waves that make for great fishing grounds and gorgeous sunsets are also perfect for shelling, as the location brings up some of the biggest and most unique shells in Sanibel.

You’ll find lots of people relaxing here rather than swimming, as swimming can be very dangerous. Arrive here at low tide (and early if possible to get parking!) to find the best shells that you can take home and make gorgeous mementos of. And if you need more advice, check out our article on the seven best beaches on Sanibel ! No matter where you go, we promise the beaches on one of the best things to do in Sanibel.

2. J.N. Ding Darling’s National Wildlife Refuge Gets You Up Close with Nature

The J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge is known for its abundant bird life and is one of the best things to do in Sanibel. During low tide and specifically in winter months, birds naturally feed on the exposed mud flats here, which means you can get an up close view of nature!

There is also a free visitor and education center here, that features exhibits on ecosystems, migratory flyaways, and hands-on areas of children. In addition, there is a bookstore that offers great field guides, nature books and children’s books! Anything purchased goes to the programs at the refuge.

One of our favorite elements of this location is definitely the Wildlife Drive. For only five dollars a vehicle you can drive through the wildlife and explore everyone in their natural habitat! There are also trails available for hiking where you can spot herons, ibis and alligators. Other recreational opportunities include fishing, photography, kayaking and more. 3. Visit Bailey Matthew’s National Shell Museum If You Can!

Because you are in a location that is famous for shelling and shells, of course we have to highlight the Bailey Matthew’s National Shell Museum! This is one of the best things to do in Sanibel and Captiva solely because of how interactive and informative it is.

Families love this place because it features programming that includes touch pools, scavenger hunts, and mollusk movies. With new exhibit that feature cuttlefish and sea hares, to highlighting some of the largest shells ever on display, this location is so fun and educational.

4. The Sanibel Lighthouse is a Great Landmark

As mentioned earlier, the beaches at Sanibel and Captiva are great for shelling, and that includes Lighthouse beach! Lighthouse beach is great to visit and is one of the best things to do in Sanibel because it also features a very prominent landmark: the lighthouse itself!

With restroom facilities, and large parking lots, this is a popular destination for fishing off the pier and shelling. Tourists also seem to love observing the ospreys and pelicans, and if they’re lucky, witnessing a dolphin or two swim by!

What makes this spot really cool though is that the Sanibel Island Light, also known as the point Ybel Light, was one of the first lighthouses on the Gulf Coast. It is 98-feet above sea level and features an iron skeleton tower.

The lighthouse was first lit in 188, and has a spiral staircase that starts about 10 feet above the ground. You should consider checking it out and exploring as we think it is one of the most iconic things to do in Sanibel!

The Sanibel Lighthouse sets a strong contrast to a sunset.

5. Captiva Chapel by the Sea is Epic

One of the coolest things to do in Sanibel, and even one of the coolest things to do in Captiva, is to explore Captiva Chapel by the sea. In this national historic district, you can step back in time and look through a one room schoolhouse that was built in 1901 but transformed into a mission church in 1921

This Methodist mission church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013 and welcomes all, no matter what their religions beliefs.

Here this church nurtures a strong community and supportive outreach missions. The community feel is usually enhanced by local events, prayer chains and more, and while they do reach out to everyone, stepping in here is a moment of history because of its National Register of Historic Paces. It is one of the cool places in Captiva and things to do in Sanibel! And if you want more information, feel free to check out our post on Christmas Towns in Florida : Captiva knows how to celebrate!

This white chapel is small and decorated with colorful lights.

Periwinkle Way is Sanibel and Captiva’s main hub for several restaurants and shopping opportunities. Most tourists find themselves here, strolling through storefronts and browsing. It is also home to some of the best restaurants in Captiva!

Here you can find souvenir shops and upscale stores, but what makes this one of the best things to do in Sanibel is the backdrop of the picturesque scenery along the street. This scenery comes at any time of the day, of course, but Periwinkle can also be a great one of those great things to do in Sanibel Island at night!

10. Stop by the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife if it Rains

If you love animals you have to stop by the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife! In fact, we recommend stopping here if you have a rainy day on your schedule: this is one of the best things to do in Sanibel Island when it rains!

This attraction was founded by Shirley Walter in 1968 when she realized there was no one there to help injured and local wildlife. Since then the Clinic (also known as CROW) has nursed thousands of animals back to health.

Over 200 species have been helped by specialists who provide emergency medicine, surgery, and rehabilitation. It is a teaching hospital for most, but we love it and recommend it as one of the best things to do in Sanibel because this center also has interactive exhibits with presentations, the Visitor Education Center and more! Admission is just $12!

New Sanibel restaurant opens for breakfast, lunch and dinner on east end of island

Brian Podlasek has always had a fondness for lighthouses.

“It started when I was a kid growing up in south Boston,” said the owner of the Magic Bus and soon-to-be-rebuilt Island Cow on Sanibel. “I always saw one. Then here, I could see the light from the ( Sanibel) lighthouse from my bedroom window while going to sleep every night. I’ve always had a fascination for them.”

So when it came time to name his newest venture on the island's east end, he “went old school.”

“Wickies was an interesting term for lighthouse keepers,” said the co-owner of Wickies Lighthouse Restaurant. “It’s such a fun name. People will ask about it, and I tell them.”

The lighthouse theme works on another level too.

A fire closed Island Cow, owned by Brian and his wife Elke, in August 2022. When Hurricane Ian roared through in September 2022, it washed away Max and Bridget Kolshak’s restaurant, The Mad Hatter .

The longtime friends teamed up to open The Magic Bus in February and Wickies on April 1 in the Seahorse Shops plaza on the east end of Sanibel.

“This is a different thing the east end hasn’t had,” Brian said. “It brings focus here, a neat spot for people to go to and see something new.”

And they sure have been finding it.

“We have reservations every evening,” Elke said. “We have locals and day travelers. A lot are coming over and over and over again. People love it.”

It starts with breakfast — from 8-11:30 a.m. — where you’ll find loaded buttermilk waffles and pancakes (topped with fresh fruit, chocolate chips, Nutella, whipped cream and more), omelets, and classics, from steak & eggs to biscuits & gravy.

“We have a chef-inspired menu that we keep adding to,” Brian said. “We’re always trying new things. I’m going to need a treadmill. Crème Brule French toast and more Benedicts — lobster, shrimp, salmon.”

More creativity is served during lunch (11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.), from the blueberry jalapeno or pear gorgonzola flatbreads to the strawberry zinfandel salads or bacon fig wrap. They’re all scattered among burgers, tacos and other sandwiches, salads, and appetizers.

“The crab cakes are fantastic,” Brian said. “I try them everywhere I go, and these are excellent.”

You’ll find the same apps, salads, flatbreads, a burger and fish tacos on the dinner menu (4-9 p.m.), along with some serious steak, lobster and seafood dishes.

Lunch and dinner specials change daily, “depending on what fish is in.”

Desserts are also available, including the beloved Hatter cheesecake, the “same recipe from The Mad Hatter” according to Elke.

“We have dinner reservations being booked for six weeks ahead,” she added. “We’ve been pretty slammed at night. But don’t worry. We always have room to accommodate everyone.”

The bright, stylish dining room has six tables and four whitewashed wood booths practically floating on a deep sea-blue floor. A handful of seats and three more booths appear in the chic, intimate bar area.

Guests can also walk up to a full-service window to grab drinks — from signature cocktails to beer and wine — or a bite to enjoy outside. Outdoor seating includes a few more tables and a stool-lined counter.

“People love the bar inside and the outside window,” Elke said. “Some stop just for a cocktail and come back for dinner later. They come for bloody marys, mimosas and manmosas (with vodka, bubbly, beer and fruit puree). Word is spreading. People really love to hang out and have cocktails.”

Island eats: Restaurants open on Matlacha and Pine Island, including all the waterfront and hidden gems

“Fish tacos and margaritas just can’t be beat,” said Brian, who first came to Sanibel with his snowbird parents in the late 1970s and early '80s, before moving down in 1990. “I find myself eating here more in four weeks than I ate at the (Island) Cow in four years. I was always moving there, always busy. The east end of the island has its own feel to it. It's like you’re on vacation.”
