Based on the English Riviera , Torquay is a traditional, yet thriving seaside town that was named the trending UK holiday destination in 2021. The town is most famous for  its beaches , which provide some of the best sea swimming, paddling and kayaking in England. The horseshoe-shaped Bay is perfect for watersports – from global sailing competitions to splashing about in the sea, and you will find the water warm, safe and shallow.

But that’s not all Torquay has to offer! You can also expect iconic palm trees, a busy harbour, an international marina, sandy beaches and a wonderful array of continental-style  cafes, restaurants and cocktail bars : so the scene is set for the perfect Devon seaside holiday!

Family friendly holiday destination

Families can enjoy a wide range of  unique attractions  including one of Europe’s most important caves, an 800-year-old Abbey, a historic manor house and craft studios and for the more adventurous: plenty of walking tours! With its stunning natural beauty, it’s not hard to see why Torquay is part of the UNESCO-accredited Global Geopark – meaning that The English Riviera provides unique cultural, geological and historical importance to the world.

In fact, the Queen of Crime, Agatha Christie was born in Torquay and spent much of her life there, even buying her holiday home, Greenway later in life. In September each year, Torquay comes alive with super-sleuths for the famous International Agatha Christie Festival. Plus there are plenty of connections to the Queen of Crime around Torquay. After a busy day exploring Torquay, why not head to the theatres for evening  entertainment?

Food and drink in Torquay

A real foodie town, there are many  restaurants and bars  around town serving food from all over the world, but if you want to stay local there are some great eateries where you can enjoy some of the freshest seafood straight from England’s Seafood Coast!

There are over  500 accommodation providers , so whether you’re looking for a warm welcome at a B&B, your own space and stunning views with self-catering cottages, family-friendly holiday parks or all the facilities of a large hotel, you’re sure to find it here on South Devon’s beautiful bay!

tourist information centre torquay

Torquay (pronounced "Tor-kee") is a town on the coast of the English Riviera and South Devon region of Devon . Since the 19th century, it has been a fashionable seaside resort in the English Riviera. The town sits on the shore of the English Channel, on the southern edge of Torbay , an east facing bay that is part of the larger Lyme Bay.

Understand [ edit ]

Torquay's advantages as a seaside resort and destination are obvious, with 9 sandy beaches and extremely high standards of water quality (holder of 3 European Blue Flags, more than any other English resort). Torbay enjoys a warm micro-climate that allows palm-like trees to grow readily, though these are not true palms but rather Cordyline australis - Cabbage Tree.

Torquay is infamous as the setting of Fawlty Towers , the hotel owned by Basil and Sybil Fawlty in the classic 1970s British television comedy. The TV show was inspired by the now closed Gleneagles Hotel which the cast stayed at while filming Monty Python's Flying Circus .

The coastal area of Torbay which includes Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, was given the nickname 'English Riviera' because of the large amount of sandy beaches and the relatively warm climate compared to the rest of the country. Officially known as Torbay, it is almost completely made up of tourist resorts and small fishing communities. It is in a natural east-facing harbour.

In 2011, it was home to 65,000 people.

Torquay is also known for being the place where explorer Percy Fawcett was born.

Visitor information [ edit ]

Get in [ edit ]

By plane [ edit ].

Exeter ( EXT  IATA ) is the closest airport, but seldom the most convenient as it's lost its flights to London.

By road [ edit ]

Torquay is connected to the UK motorway network by the A380, which traces the outskirts of the town as Hellevoetsluis Way and Hamelin Way, leading to the A38 and then on to the M5 at Exeter. The A3022 branches from the A380, leading into Torquay as Riviera Way, to the seafront as Newton Road and then Avenue Road, and then on to Paignton as Torbay Road. The A379 runs past the harbour to the Babbacombe and St Marychurch areas of Torquay, and then north along the coast to Teignmouth.

By train [ edit ]

Torquay is on the scenic Riviera Line . Trains run every 30 min from Exmouth, looping round the estuary and taking 55 min from Exeter (3 stations) via Starcross, Dawlish, Teignmouth , Newton Abbot and Torre, and continuing from Torquay to Paignton . There's occasionally a through-service but usually you change at Exeter for Bristol , West Midlands , Manchester Piccadilly and London Paddington .

50.4613 -3.5431 1 Torquay railway station is on the coast near Torre Abbey. There's a staffed ticket office, machines and a coffee shop. Plusbus tickets are available.

50.4729 -3.5463 2 Torre railway station is one mile north along the road to Newton Abbot. The frequent Exmouth-Exeter-Paignton trains stop here but not the long-distance services.

By bus [ edit ]

Torquay is the terminus of the Gold service which runs from Plymouth , Totnes , and Paignton, and terminates at the harbour. This can be a useful way to reach Torquay from the west since it means you do not need to change trains at Newton Abbot.

Get around [ edit ]

Two bus routes operated by Stagecoach Devon pass through Torquay — the 'Bayline' number 12 service between Newton Abbot and Brixham, and the X46 service between Exeter and Paignton — while other routes operate within the town.

Torquay's Heritage

Torquay has undergone significant transformations throughout its history, from a small fishing village to a thriving tourist destination with connections to significant historical events. It started some 450,000 years ago with early humans, of which artefacts were found in Kents Cavern. The eleventh-century records from the Domesday Book show no actual occupation, though it is known that Roman soldiers made visits, and there was a small Saxon settlement called 'Torre'.However, in 1196 Torre Abbey was founded here; the rest is history and much of it!

A Few Facts

It's not uncommon for people to say, "I've been to Torquay, or Paignton or Brixham as a child, or to visit friends or pre-wedding. But there are so many facts most people don't know, such as: The oldest UK human remains found in Kent's Cavern. That Faulty Towers was based on the Gleneagles Hotel (RIP).  Agatha Christie was born here, and two billion book sales later, one of the most famous authors ever! The area is a geopark with an incredible geological history, as witnessed by its cliffs and contours. There are also two other Torquays, Australia & Canada!

Locals love Torquay & Torbay

Ask why the M5 gets jammed in the summer and on bank holidays, heading south. Yes, some head to Cornwall, which is another hour away and nowhere near as lovely as Devon (I'm biased here). We have it all because of the sea, and 80% of people want to live next to water. We have countryside with Dartmoor on our doorstep. We have plenty of bars, restaurants and things to do (it is a tourist destination). It's warmer in winter, and the calm and quiet time, which we all need occasionally, allows time to walk the beaches, breathe the fresh air and wait for next season.

Holiday Rentals

Cottages & Apts

If you are looking for a Torquay Airbnb, cheaper and direct from managers and other more focused websites then check out these links. The companies specialise in certain aspects of the business, and holiday rentals or holiday cottages are recommended by locals.

Dog Friendly Rentals

With so many great beaches and walks around Torbay, then dog-friendly rentals are the perfect answer. For families and couples who don't want to leave their best friends behind then stay in a holiday cottage. Let your dog loose on the beach and in the waves!

Luxury Rentals

Maybe you want to celebrate a birthday or a wedding anniversary, or perhaps you may just want to enjoy views or premium accommodation.

Luxury rentals are often larger, too, with bigger gardens or space. This lends itself to group celebrations, too.

Too much accommodation choice? Take our advice, we live here!
