History of Balamban, Cebu

Before the arrival of the Spanish, the whole region was a densely forested area covered in thick vegetation except for a very narrow strip along the coastline.

Once they have arrived on the land, they are disappointed to discover that there is not even one house to exist as it has already been robbed by the Moro pirates known as pillaging, forcing the indigenous people in the area called as the Kangmas move internally in the region.

Soon as the Spaniards have located the Kanga territory, the Kangmas expressed no fear nor hesitation as they already gained familiarity with the Spanish settlements in the Barangay of Zebu who have taught them to link their arms to stimulate the seat of a chair which is referred to a local term known as “Balang balang”.

The locals even communicated with the white men who asked for the name of their location but given that their knowledge is still limited, they responded the same actions almost in every question which has been accepted by the Spanish and soon shortened into “Bangbang” for ease of pronunciation.

However, due to excessive flood that has destroyed the natives’ stone houses, they were forced to transfer to the town’s current location with regards to the civil authorities until the area has changed to its present name of Balamban as several generations have already passed.

In 1745, Balamban became a town “pueblo” as attested by Spanish documents recognizing its existence during the Spanish colonial period. Ciriaco Gutierrez, a Spanish Captain, it its first administrator.

Balamban City ?

House Bill No. 1547 was filed by Congressman Pablo John Garcia on July 8, 2019. The said bill aims to convert the first class municipality of Balamban, as a component city in the province of Cebu.

Main Industries of Balamban, Cebu

Agriculture.

In the past, Balamban was only an agricultural community. Coconut, rice, corn, and a few root crops are among its products. Other agricultural items are discovered to be more productive and money-generating as the village grows. Thus, the new items also contain abaca and dragon fruit.

The fruit of numerous cactus species is known as a pitaya, pitahaya, or dragon fruit . “Pitaya” typically refers to fruit from the genus Stenocereus, whereas “pithaya” or “dragon fruit” always refers to fruit from the genus Hylocereus. Barangay Singsing has a dragon fruit farm.

The banana species known as abaca , scientific name Musa textilis, is indigenous to the Philippines and is raised commercially in those countries as well as in Costa Rica and Ecuador.

In Barangay Sunog in Balamban, there is a substantial plantation of this product (Magsaysay).

Shipbuilding

Balamban has grown into an industrial municipality, thanks to the huge shipbuilding industry that is located in Buanoy. Buanoy is a known barangay for it is the location of the well-renowned Tsuneishi Heavy Industries , the ship-making company that gave the title Ship Building Capital of the Philippines to Balamban.

The 50-hectare WCIP property belongs to Cebu Industrial Park Developers, Inc. (CIPDI). The largest Asian shipbuilding company is based on the property.

Tsuneishi Heavy Industries (Cebu), Inc. (THI) constructs car and truck carrier vessels and bulk carrier ships up to 180,000 deadweight tons.

Another business is still present in the WCIP Industrial Zone. Among other fastrafts, Austal Philippines, Pty Ltd constructs catamarans.

Metaphil International is another industry that significantly boosted Balamban’s economy. In the industrial zone as of 2014, there were 12,000 people, both direct hires and subcontractors. Balamban is the Philippines’ center for shipbuilding thanks to these businesses.

Balamban, Cebu is one of a kind destination that helps you unwind, recollect your thoughts, reflect on your life in its refreshing accommodations while still having some fun in their top tourist attractions or just by simply wandering around the neighborhood that has a peaceful ambiance and welcoming Cebuanos that will surely make you want to extend your stay in the region until you don’t want to leave anymore – make every second of your visit count and enjoy life!

7 Amazing Tourist Spots in Asturias, Cebu

tourist spots in balamban cebu

Located just north of Balamban, Asturias is one of the less-visited towns along the northwest coast of Cebu island. Less than two hours away from Cebu City, via the Cebu Transcentral Highway, the municipality makes for an excellent day trip or weekend getaway. While its elegant town church and famous bingka dawa (millet cakes) can be found just along the highway, most of its attractions – such as cold springs, waterfalls, and caves – are hidden gems tucked away farther inland, reached by partially paved mountain roads.

tourist spots in balamban cebu

Bingka Dawa Stalls

Coming from Balamban, the gateway to Asturias is Barangay Owak, home of the town’s most celebrated delicacy called bingka dawa (millet cake). Unlike the typical Filipino bingka ( bibingka in Tagalog), this special version is made with dawa or kabóg (millet) instead of pilít (glutinous rice), giving it a finer and softer texture. Stalls selling this unique native cake line the highway near Owak Covered Court. They are sold for ₱25 for two pieces wrapped in banana leaves, and are best consumed within three days. At Teresita’s Special Bingka Dawa , the vendors showed me how they’re made at a stilted hut behind their roadside stall. The bingka dawa are cooked in clay stoves heated with smoldering coconut husks from underneath and above.

San Roque de Montpellier Church

The town center’s centerpiece is San Roque de Montpellier Church, completed in 1935. The neoclassical building stands in front of the town plaza near the municipal hall. It is named after the patron saint of Asturias, St. Roch of Montpellier. The nearby Village Walk Asturias , a commercial center with restaurants and retail shops at Burgos corner G. Delfin Sts, is a nice place to grab a bite or cup of coffee.

tourist spots in balamban cebu

Buswang Lake

Hemmed in by hilly countryside, this lush oasis strewn with lotus and water hyacinths in Barangay Bago is perhaps the most visited tourist spot in Asturias. One can walk on a boardwalk (entrance fee: ₱10) to the middle of the lake. The open-air lakeside establishment Buswang Lake House Restobar is an excellent spot to enjoy food or drinks while admiring the bucolic surroundings.

tourist spots in balamban cebu

Manguiao Cave

If you’re looking for adventure, head for Barangay Manguiao, where local youths can take you spelunking in Manguiao Cave. It’s a wet cave with an underground stream, so make sure you’re dressed appropriately. Exploring this small cave entails wading through waist-deep water and crawling through narrow tunnels that widen up to a chamber densely decorated with stalactites, stalagmites, and some sparkling flowstones. The cave entrance is a few minutes walk from the Lower Manguiao Community Stage, where visitors can park their vehicles. Ask around for local guides, or drop by the barangay hall first for assistance.

tourist spots in balamban cebu

Manguiao Falls

This small hidden waterfall is the perfect spot to bathe and enjoy a picnic after exploring Manguiao Cave. It is located in a private property farther up the village. Visits to this waterfall must be arranged beforehand through St. Anthony Beach Resort (Tel. +63 9268151427; Email: [email protected] ) in Barangay Tubigagmanok. The cascade is only a few meters tall, but the exclusivity ensures it is never overcrowded, setting it apart from larger, popular waterfalls. Next to the upper level of the waterfall is a clearing with picnic tables and a thatch-roofed outhouse for the guests’ convenience. There’s a larger waterfall, Tagbubonga Falls , deeper in the mountains but this is easier to access from the east coast via Danao City.

tourist spots in balamban cebu

Agtugop Cold Spring

Another great spot to cool off is this cold spring (free entrance) located in the mountain barangay of Agtugop, near the village’s elementary school. Canonball into its deep, luminous waters or relax on a inner tube floater that can be rented for only ₱20. It’s especially popular with locals, so weekdays are a better time to visit. The mountain roads going here are partially concreted and some sections have muddy potholes, so its better to charter a habal-habal (motorcycle taxi) from the highway junction, or bring a large four-wheeled vehicle (preferably 4×4).

tourist spots in balamban cebu

Old Panghaw Ruins

The photogenic ruins of a panghaw or chimney, constructed from coral stone and concrete, stands across a rice field in Barangay Lunas, the northernmost village along the highway, bordering Tuburan. The structure is enveloped by the roots of a dakit tree (a type of banyan). I could find no information online on the history of this heritage structure, and the barangay tanod who guided us knew very little. According to him, it was built no later than the Japanese occupation in World War II. Comparing images of similar structures, it is most likely the remnants of a sugar mill. The panghaw is a few minutes walk from highway, traversing a rice field and few residences. Ask for assistance of a local guide from the barangay hall (located inside the Lunas Covered Court).

How to Get There

From Cebu City, take an air-conditioned Tuburan-bound van (aka v-hire) from the PUV terminals of either IT Park (across Ayala Malls Central Bloc) or Cebu Business Park (Ayala Center Cebu), via the Cebu Transcentral Highway, and alight at Asturias (PHP 180, 2 hours). Note: if vans don’t fill up with passengers at Ayala Center, passengers are transferred to IT Park free of charge.

Where to Stay

During our visit, we stayed at a private beach house at Tabique by the Sea . For details, check out my full review of this seaside accommodation .

Charlie’s Cup, the Newest Balamban Tourist Spot to Visit!

Charlie's Cup, the Newest Balamban Tourist Spot

Charlie’s Cup is a cafe in Cebu that offers a cool and refreshing vibe thanks to its cliffside location.

The Cebu Transcentral Highway (TCH) has become one of the island’s best spots to check out the newest and most interesting cafes and restaurants with breathtaking views .

The long, winding road makes it an ideal expedition for many travelers in search of a new spot to hang out in. As such, many businesses have opened for tourists and local travelers to enjoy.

One of these is the brand new treehouse café in Balamban known as Charlie’s Cup, a perfect tourist spot to start your day!

This new tourist spot garnered massive interest online because of its beautiful aesthetic. Sitting atop a cliff in the city’s best area for sunset views is a cafe that brings outdoor dining to a whole other level.

The New Balamban Tourist Spot

This is no doubt one of the island’s best places to unwind.

Only an hour away from the city, this Balamban cafe is located along the road of the uphill neighborhood of Tabunan. For a travel fare of around ₱ 160, you can witness this brand new restaurant that everyone is gushing about.

Balamban has some of the best views, but the comfortable and cozy atmosphere differentiates Charlie’s from the other attractions. The cool breeze and colorful foliage make you one with nature, and the rustic treehouse style definitely makes it one of the most chill places in Cebu.

This Balamban tourist spot is located on a cliff with a beautiful view.

The restaurant’s appeal is perfect for al fresco dining. The tree house aesthetic offers a unique experience where you can enjoy a hefty meal and an artistic catalog of pictures.

Though most people come here in the afternoon for the sunset view, it is actually one of the best breakfast places in Cebu. Their breakfast bowls are perfect morning starters, making it an ideal stopover before you go and visit the many other tourist spots in the area.

They also have several beverages like tea and coffee for customers looking for a quick energy boost. For your sweet tooth, they also have several Filipino desserts like Suman and Brazo de Mercedes .

Charlie’s has several beverages and food items that are mostly available in a typical café in Cebu.

This café in Cebu is also known for being pet friendly. You can bring your dog, cat, or any other cute pet to this mountainside restaurant. Make sure they are leashed at all times, though, as this is one of the set rules for pets if they are to be brought inside.

The place is also great for kids since they have a little playground. There are miniature slides and karts to keep them busy. However, the café doesn’t have someone who can always look after the kids, so their safety is still your responsibility.

This Balamban café has a playground for children, and it’s also pet friendly.

HOW TO GET THERE

Bringing your personal vehicle is the best way to get to Charlie’s since public transport is very scarce. You can use the more popular and closer route via TCH, but you can also pass by Toledo to get there. The former will let you pass by other mountainous tourist spots like the Temple of Leah , Chix Boy, and Chateau de Busay.

A motorcycle is a very popular form of transportation if you want to go to the mountains, so if you know how to drive one, that would be most preferable.

If you prefer to commute, there are vans for hire that you can ride at Ayala Center Cebu. It will cost you around ₱ 160, but you won’t be able to enjoy the relaxing climb.

You can ride a motorcycle taxi at JY Square Mall, but this is a more expensive alternative, where you might be paying around ₱ 250 per person. One motorcycle can carry two people, but if you go alone, you will have to pay the driver ₱ 400.

A drive to TCH is one of the many cheap things to do in Cebu for motorcyclists and trekkers. Located just along the road, this café would be a great morning starter.

With the interest it has gained from travel enthusiasts and foodies everywhere, Charlie’s Cup is a place worth the long drive up the mountains.
