See two of the world’s most beautiful lakes including iconic Lake Louise – famous for its jewel-like water nestled between rugged peaks.

YouTube video

These stunning alpine lakes look too beautiful to be real. On this sightseeing tour you will visit the “Jewel of the Canadian Rockies”, Lake Louise, and the world renowned Moraine Lake, both of which are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of their priceless natural beauty. They’ll stop you in your tracks in awe.

Wander the shoreline at Lake Louise and see the Victoria Glacier and the famous Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise Hotel, and then snap some shots of Moraine Lake in the beautiful Valley Of The Ten Peaks. Take a short walk up the Rockpile at Moraine Lake, where you’ll find the iconic view that was once on the back of the Canadian $20 bill. During the tour, your guide will weave tales of the early mountaineers, who also fell in love with this spot in the 1890s.

With parking lots often filling up by sunrise, get guaranteed access to both famous lakes on this guided tour.

The best parts of the tour for most people include the following:

Castle Mountain

Lake louise, the fairmont chateau lake louise, moraine lake, how long is the tour, what does the tour include, where is our pick up and drop off from, how can i join this tour if i'm not staying in banff, how long are the stops at lake louise and moraine lake, i want to see turquoise lakes, when do the lakes thaw, when is the road closed to moraine lake, can i drive to lake louise and moraine lake, is there a lot of walking involved, will i see wildlife on the tour, what is the cancellation policy, should i tip my guide.

  • All children aged 15 years and under must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian.
  • Early and late season road closures will limit access to Moraine Lake (until late May and from early October). When the access road to Moraine Lake is closed, the tour will not visit Moraine Lake and will instead spend 1 hour at Lake Louise.

Weather:  This adventure runs rain, snow or shine! Only under extreme weather conditions will there be cancellations, with full refunds or rescheduling options.

Ensure you’re dressed for mountain weather. The early morning right before sunrise is often the coldest part of the day, so layers are recommended.

Our number 1 local tip:  Don’t trust the weather forecast or be afraid of the rain! Mountain weather is super unpredictable, but fortunately even when it doesn’t cooperate as we’d like, these conditions often produce the most stunning sunrises and even less crowds. Personally, we look forward to a chance of rain on the forecast!

Accessibility:  While fitness levels for this tour are generally adaptable, participants should be prepared for light walking to make the most of this adventure.

Will I have enough time to hike to the teahouse at Lake Louise?

If you want to return to Banff with the tour group, it’s highly unlikely you’ll have time to reach any of the teahouses at Lake Louise. A popular option for guests on this tour is to join us for the exclusive sunrise experience at Moraine Lake, then “depart” the tour at Lake Louise and use the local Roam bus to return to Banff at your convenience. Getting to the lakes in the morning is the hardest part, as bus and shuttle seats sell out well in advance, but returning later in the morning/afternoon is much easier.

BANFF & LAKE LOUISE

Be social in the day & night life of banff.

Canada’s First National Park hosts the world-renowned town of Banff and the famous Lake Louise.

Banff barely needs a presentation. The little town in the heart of the Rocky Mountains offers an array of activities for every interest and landscapes that are hard to top, in the winter and summer alike. Optional activities include a guided tour of the Columbia Icefields , gondola rides, and more! Banff is also one of the best ski destinations in North America, the Lake Louise Mountain Resort is one of our favorites.

In the central avenue, you can check out boutiques, restaurants -with Elk burger!-, nightclubs and live-music pubs. Because it is in the heart of the Rockies, it is easy to spot wildlife around, especially on a sightseeing tour of Banff National Park .

Not too far, there is another site that requires little presentation: the spectacular turquoise Lake Louise with the château-style Fairmont hotel at shore. Don’t miss your picture on our Rockies tours!

Excellent tour. Accommodations, meals, vehicle met and many times exceeded expectations. Each day offered new adventures, sites, options. Itinerary was perfect with driver/guide Kara being professional, cheerful, thoughtful and adaptable. I highly recommend Discover Canada and wish they did tours in the east as well. Great value for money. The support from Jennifer at head office to reconfigure end of trip helpful as well. Thanks for memorable holiday in the west.

5-stars

Positive: Professionalism, Quality, Value

I took the Whistler sightseeing tour with Joe as our guide, it was really great! Joe was very friendly and helpful, informative and knowledgeable about BC and its history; he told us interesting tidbits and stories about the province and Whistler/Blackcomb. I enjoyed being able to do my own thing on the tour, Whistler was beautiful! Thanks again to Joe and Discover Canada Tours!

The tour was great! Our tour guide Meaghan was the best. Very nice and knowledgeable. She was funny too! Highly recommended!

My mom and I, along with her friends did the full day sightseeing tour to Vancouver island with a visit to the Butchart Gardens. We had an absolutely fantastic experience and I would highly recommend if you want to see the island and gardens as the travel is all planned out and you get to sit back and enjoy everything!

Discover Canada also provides very good pricing for everything you get and our tour guide Joe was fantastic and very kind! He was very knowledgeable and made everyone feel comfortable and answered random questions everyone had throughout the day.

Day Tour To Banff- Lake Louis-Morine Lake - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

Is the Columbia Icefield Adventure Tour Worth the Cost?

Is the Athabasca Glacier Icefield Adventure Tour Worth It?

The Columbia Icefield Adventure Tour (also called the Athabasca Glacier Tour) on the Icefields Parkway is one of the most popular attractions along the famed route. Huge icefield explorer vehicles transport guests to the base of Athabasca Glacier, allowing them to get up close and personal with the glacier. For many, it’s the experience of a lifetime that leaves lasting memories.

It’s not a cheap experience, as adult tickets are over 100 dollars, and the tour can take several hours. As it’s a significant cost, we get a lot of questions about our opinion of the tour. Let’s break down the experience along with the pros and cons.

What is the Full Tour?

Natasha Stands On Athabasca Glacier In Front Of Ice Explorer Vehicles

The Athabasca Glacier tour can be a bit confusing to understand; a lot is happening at this little meeting point between Banff and Jasper. When talking about the Athabasca Glacier/Columbia Icefield Adventure Tour, we’re referring to a tour run by Pursuit. The Adventure Tour is comprised of two experiences. It’s essentially a combo tour that includes the Ice Explorer Tour on the Athabasca Glacier and the Columbia Icefield Skywalk overlooking the Sunwapta Valley. The tour departs from the Glacier Discover Centre.

Do I Have to Do It as a Combo?

Cameron on the Columbia Icefield Adventure Tour

It’s not possible to purchase tickets for the Ice Explorer Vehicles separately. All Ice Explorer tours automatically include admission to the Skywalk. However, purchasing just a Columbia Icefield Skywalk ticket is possible if you want to enjoy the Skywalk and not the Ice Explorer.

Ice Explorer Truck Experience

The Ice Explorer Vehicles Parked On The Athabasca Glacier

The Ice Explorer is the most popular tour and experience on the Athabasca Glacier. The tour takes visitors high up the Glacier and drops them off on the Glacier to experience it firsthand. This is done with massive trucks that drive up and down the steep moraines of the Glacier before driving to a designated area where passengers can get out and touch and drink from the glacier.

An Ice Explorer Vehicle Drives Over A Rock Moraine

The designated area is a roped-off area free of crevasses that is safe to explore. Granted, it’s certainly not a vast space. However, as they only allow visitors to stop here for 20 minutes, it keeps people moving through, so there’s always plenty of space to accommodate everyone.

Icefield Explorer Tour on the Athabasca Glacier

When you are on the Glacier, you can drink straight from it and take as many photos as you want. It’s certainly an incredible experience. Guides are on site to answer any questions. At nearly $100, it’s one of the more expensive experiences you can have, but this also includes tickets to the Skywalk.

The Columbia Icefield Skywalk Experience

A View Of The Icefields Skywalk

After stepping foot on the Athabasca Glacier, you’ll be transported to the Skywalk. This is a glass-bottomed bridge just north of the Athabasca Icefield. Depending on your ticketed time, you’ll board a bus at the Glacier Discovery Centre that will drive you to the Skywalk. There is nowhere to park at the Skywalk, so you cannot drive there yourself. You must get on the buses to the Skywalk, which may prolong your time at this stop.

The actual Skywalk is about 6 km from the Glacier Discovery Centre and doesn’t quite offer views of Mount Athabasca or the Glacier; instead, it offers fantastic views of the Sunwapta Valley.

Natasha Looks Over Edge A Cloudy Day On Icefields Skywalk

The whole Skywalk is a kilometer-long walk. The first bits of the walk move through informative displays where you can learn about the Rockies and even the building of the Skywalk—quite an engineering feat! Guests are given audio guides in multiple languages, which you can listen to and follow.

Eventually, you’ll reach the glass-bottom bridge, which is a thrilling walk, especially if you fear heights. Don’t worry, though. There is no need to worry about safety, as these glass panels are literally bulletproof and then some. However, that doesn’t mean looking down at the valley floor 300 meters below isn’t heart-stopping.

Is the Adventure Tour Worth The Cost?

Early Morning On The Icefields Parkway, Mount Athabasca & Andromeda

At $109, it’s not a cheap experience and it’s one of the most expensive experiences you can have in the Rockies – and the most costly Pursuit offering. The only main paid attraction it’s cheaper than is canoeing on Lake Louise or canoeing on Moraine Lake . Pursuit’s website offers numerous deals, including one for families, one for Albertans, and one for off-peak savings.

We have enjoyed every experience around Mount Athabasca, including the Ice Explorer and Skywalk. We’ve booked an Icewalk Experience, hiked near the Glacier, camped near the Glacier at the Columbia Icefield Campground, and even summited Mount Athabasca .

Perhaps we are the wrong people to ask, but we would give the Athabasca Glacier Icefield Adventure Tour a skip. It’s not a bad experience, and plenty of people absolutely love it, but to us, it’s a ver y commercialized experience in the Canadian Rockies. We’ll break down our pros and cons below.

It’s expensive . Not much in the Canadian Rockies is cheap, but a family of four would spend nearly $400 on this experience. Yikes!

The whole tour takes a while . Between parking at the Discovery Centre, checking in, getting transported onto the Ice Explorer Vehicles, 20 minutes on the Glacier, being transferred to the Skywalk, 45 minutes on the Skywalk, and returning to the Discovery Centre, the whole experience can easily take 4 hours. Driving the Icefields Parkway is already a full-day experience, so we think this is quite a long time to spend between the two activities.

It’s not environmentally friendly . When you get to Athabasca Glacier, you’ll undoubtedly be in awe of its beauty, but that Glacier has retreated a bit in the past 100 years, and there are photos to prove it. It seems pretty ironic to show these photos while also running large trucks burning fossil fuels right next to the ice, but I’m no scientist.

A Historic Photo Of Athabasca Glacier In 1930

It’s not much glacier time : While visitors can spend as long as they want on the Skywalk, they are only given 20 minutes to walk on the glacier. The designated area is quite small, so 20 minutes is enough time. Though we feel that $109 is quite a bit to spend for this time.

It’s very commercial : The buses can hold up to 56 passengers and run all day. That is a lot of people in the area, especially during the peak summer season. For a national park that is all about conservation, recreation, and reconnection to our wild spaces, experiences like this feel like the opposite.

You get to experience a glacier ! Learning about glaciers is exceptionally important, and for many, the best way to learn about them and the role climate change has on them is to see them up close and experience them. The huge amount the glacier has receded is terrifying and seems to worsen every season, which is important to learn about.

It’s a safe and controlled experience : Unlike some activities in the Rockies, like skiing, scrambling, or hiking, the whole Athabasca Adventure Tour is a safe and controlled glacier experience.

The vehicle tech is impressive: The Ice Explorer travels on extreme off-road terrain, including a steep moraine slope, before venturing onto the glacier. On our last tour, our driver told us it was the steepest non-paved descent in Canada. These vehicles hold 56 passengers and have absolutely massive low-pressure tires for on-road and off-road adventures. They have huge windows that are great for viewing out the window. It’s a vehicle I’ve never seen anywhere else in the world.

The engineering is amazing: There’s no question about it. The Columbia Icefield Skywalk is an impressive structural engineering work featuring a 30m curved glass walkway extending 35m from the cliff face and 280m above the Sunwapta Valley. RJC Engineers, the team behind the Skywalk, had their work cut out for them and certainly delivered.

A Kid Walks Along The Icefield Skywalk

Kids love it: If you have kids, both experiences will surely WOW them. We consider the Adventure Tour one of the best things to do with kids in the Canadian Rockies. It’s a bonus that it gets them to learn about glaciers early.

It’s Accessible : One-quarter of the Explorer fleet’s vehicles are extra-long and have a special wheelchair lift. Each vehicle can accommodate up to two wheelchairs at a time. The Skywalk is also intentionally designed to be entirely flat and accessible to people using wheelchairs, pushchairs, and walkers, ensuring that all visitors to the park can have an enjoyable experience! This is a huge plus for us, as our wild spaces are for everyone.

Tour Alternatives

Book an icewalk experience.

Guests Of Rockaboo Glacier Tour Stand Next To A Crevase On Athabasca Glacier

You don’t have to take the massive Ice Explorer vehicles to walk on the Glacier. Instead, you can book an Ice walk tour if you are fit and able. An Ice Walk tour is a much more personal experience, with a certified guide that will safely take you on the glacier and provide insights and explanations of what you are looking at. We highly recommend booking an Ice Walk tour and not trying to walk on the glacier yourself, which can be very unsafe. If you want to actually repel into a crevasse on your glacier experience, Rockaboo is the only guiding company certified to do that.

Hike to the Toe of the Glacier

The Road That Leads To The Toe Of The Athabasca Glacier

The best free option is to hike to the Toe of the Athabasca Glacier, which can be reached easily from the parking area. This short hike is less than a 2km round trip and has less than 100 meters of elevation gain from the parking area.

Hike Wilcox Pass

A Photo Of Mount Athabasca From Wilcox Pass

Wilcox Pass is a moderate half-day hike that offers mesmerizing glacial views over the Columbia Icefields. The hike gains a pass across from Mount Athabasca and Andromeda, two of the tallest mountains in the Canadian Rockies.

Hike Parker Ridge

Cameron Sits On A Rock And Looks Out To Glacier From Parker Ridge

Parker Ridge is my favorite hike along the Parkway , and I recommend that most people try it if they have a few hours to spare and are prepared for a hike. Located near the Columbia Icefields Center, hikers can reach the ridge after a gradual 2.5 km climb. The trail is easy and well-marked, with no technical or scrambling involved.

This makes it an excellent walk for people of all ages and skill levels, from young couples to families with children and dogs. Once at the ridge, you’ll get the most impressive views of the Saskatchewan Glacier and a beautiful blue glacier lake.

Book Your Tickets

TheBanffBlog on the Columbia Icefield Adventure Tour-3

We hope this has helped you decide what to do with your time on the Icefields Parkway and whether to book the Adventure Tour.

If you decide to go for the tour, we are sure you will have a great time! Tickets for the experiences operate on time slots, so purchasing your tickets in advance is best to avoid a long wait or the tickets being sold out entirely. You can book tickets online, but I wouldn’t recommend booking too far in advance as, similar to Banff Gondola and Jasper Skytram , your experience can vary significantly with the weather due to poor visibility.

The Glacier Discovery Centre, Skywalk, and Ice Explorer Tour all open on May 4th, 2024. You can book tickets here on the Pursiut Banff Jasper Collection website, or through a third party like Viator or GetYourGuide .

Canadian Rockies: The 12 Most Beautiful Lakes in Banff National Park

Are you wanting to visit the lakes in banff national park you’re in the right place .

Feeling the pull towards those gorgeous mountain lakes of the Canadian Rockies you see plastered all over top travel sites?

From the bright turquoise blue shores of beautiful Lake Louise to the quiet serenity of Herbert Lake, there’s surely a lake for everyone in Banff.

I never travel without bringing GuideAlong with me! Check out this affordable audio guide to take your Banff trip from ok to exceptional!

Best lakes in Banff National Park

1. lake louise.

Inarguably Banff’s most iconic lake, Lake Louise is a must-see lake when visiting Banff.

Of course, with being the most popular of Banff’s lakes comes, yep, you guessed it…crowds. So, if crowds aren’t your thing, head to Lake Louise very early or late in the day.

One of the best ways to explore this aqua gem is to rent one of the iconic red canoes here. At an eye-popping $155 per hour for non-hotel guests, expect to shell out for this famous experience.

If you’d rather remain a land-lover, the best way to experience Lake Louise is by hitting the lakeshore trail. You’ll curl around this gorgeous azure blue lake, and soak in those famed views from shore.

Because Lake Louise is the most popular lake in Banff, finding it is easy. Expect about a 45-minute drive from the town of Banff along the Trans-Canada Highway.

The exit is well-marked and can’t be missed, and there are multiple on-site parking lots.

Pro Tip* The parking sign at Lake Louise always states the lots are “FULL” whether they are or not. Not once did we find the lots even close to full on several trips there, yet the sign always indicated lots were totally full.

If you’re willing to fork over the $21 Canadian for a primo parking spot on-site, continue past the “lot full” sign, and have your credit card handy.

2. Lake Minnewanka

Dubbed “The Water of the Spirits” by indigenous peoples, the largest lake in Banff National Park is the stuff bucket lists are made of. This stunning body of water fed by the adjoining Cascade River offers chances to see such wildlife as bighorn sheep, elk, and deer. If you’re lucky, you may even spy a Grizzly or black bear.

Spectacular views of the surrounding Canadian Rockies make this the perfect place for a scenic boat cruise. This incredibly popular tour has you soaking in scenic views while guides describe the history of Lake Minnewanka .

Hiking options include the beautiful Minnewanka Lakeside Trail, or, for a more challenging hike, check out Aylmer Lookout Trail .

Love to fish? Lake Minnewanka makes the list of the top ten Lake Trout fishing spots in all of Canada, so bring along your rod and reel!

You’ll also find some of the best picnic areas in Banff here.

Not adventurous enough for your taste? Strap on your SCUBA tank and take it underwater to explore the hidden town of Minnewanka Landing.

Yep, this beautiful glacial lake features a real abandoned town from the 1800s, completely underwater!

A mere 15-minute drive from the town of Banff, Lake Minnewanka can be found by way of Lake Minnewanka Road via the Trans-Canada Highway.

Pro-tip: When traveling to Banff in the summer months , be sure to pick up a bottle of bear spray. With the exception of the Lake Louise lakeshore, as it’s so incredibly busy, bear spray is wise to carry in the Banff wilderness.

3. Moraine Lake

Moraine Lake is yet another must-see turquoise lake nestled in the Canadian Rockies. This is one spot you don’t want to miss. During the summer months, the lake will be at its brightest blue, so it’s quite possibly the best time to visit.

While Moraine Lake boasts several great hiking trails, the most popular is the Rockpile Trail. With very little (under 80 feet) of elevation gain, and clocking in at less than 1,000 feet long, it’s an easy choice.

Atop the rock pile, you’ll find yourself gazing upon one of the best views in Banff. And the most photographed view in Canada.

Canoeing is another excellent way to enjoy the lake, and (at $115 per hour) is slightly less expensive than at nearby Lake Louise.

Or, for a flatter jaunt, hit the lakeside trail, and soak in the views of the gorgeous Ten Peaks.

Getting to Moraine Lake is simple. Expect around an hour’s trip (one-way) from the town of Banff. You’ll take the Trans Canada Highway to Lake Louise Drive.

Pro Tip: Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles, so if you want to get there, hop on the Parks Canada shuttle bus, and relax your way to this stunning glacial lake.

At $8 per adult, and free for kids under 18, it’s well worth the price. Vehicles with handicapped plates or passes are exempt and are granted access to parking here.

4. Two Jack Lake

This emerald-green stunner is sure to capture your heart. Two Jack is a perfect place for active watersports, SUP, kayaking, swimming, fishing, and canoeing here.

So, if getting out on the water is your jam, definitely head to Two Jack Lake. Fans of this spectacular mountain lake come for the stunning views of the famed Mount Rundle and stay for the many activities it offers.

Hikers enjoy the moderately-rated Two Jack Lake Trail, a three-mile out-and-back jaunt through picturesque mountain views.

Two Jack Lake is also home to the top-rated Two Jack Lakeside Campground. So, if sleeping under the stars is your game, this is your spot.

You’ll find Two Jack Lake just a short drive from nearby Lake Minnewanka, and only 10 minutes from the town of Banff, making it a popular choice for tourists.

From Banff town, jump on the Trans-Canada Highway and exit Banff Avenue. From there, you’ll turn onto Lake Minnewanka Scenic Drive.

5. Lake Agnes

This lake offers a truly unique hiking experience. Yes, there are, of course, beautiful views to be had here. But, the crown jewel of adventuring here is the hike up to the Lake Agnes Tea House . Yep, here you’ll find an adorable tea house, ready to serve you tea, and a number of other goodies, amongst the forest.

Think it can’t get any more special than this? Guess what…the water used to make the tea literally comes from Lake Agnes.

Though this hike is family-friendly, it’s uphill the whole way to the Tea House, so be sure you’ve packed adequate water, and wear those hiking shoes.

Plan for this hike to take a total of 3 hours or so, and be sure to head up early. The Tea House isn’t open late, and you’ll find yourself disappointed if they’re closed.

On your way up to the Tea House, you’ll pass by beautiful Mirror Lake , in addition to a small waterfall just before the Tea House. These are great opportunities for photo ops.

To hike Lake Agnes, you’ll park or take a Parks Canada shuttle bus to the Lake Louise parking lots. So, you’ll get the chance to see Banff’s most famed lake on your way.

Pro Tip: The extremely popular Lake Agnes Trail is shared as a horse trail, so you’re likely to find large amounts of horse droppings along the trail. Be sure to wear appropriate shoes for this hike.

6. Peyto Lake

Located very close to the Icefields Parkway, Peyto Lake is a great place to pencil in if you’re thinking of heading up to Jasper National Park. Another of Banff’s stunning glacial lakes, Peyto does not disappoint.

This spectacular, turquoise lake gets its rare color from large amounts of glacial rock flour depositing into the lake. If you’re looking to capture that Instagram-worthy photo, the best spot to head is Bow Summit .

Another of the quite popular lakes in Banff, Peyto Lake has seen a huge investment in upgrades to make it more visitor-friendly, including adding year-round restrooms, a larger parking lot, and massive upgrades to the popular viewing platform.

Considered one of the very best overlooks in Banff National Park, the Peyto Lake Lookout sits at the very highest elevation on the famed Icefields Parkway.

The views are so beautiful, it sits atop most of the must-do lists for Banff, so don’t miss it!

Getting to Peyto Lake is simple. Just west of Lake Louise, you’ll hop on the Icefields Parkway. You’ll find the exit about 30 minutes away.

7. Vermilion Lakes

Vermilion Lakes are a popular choice for many, as they’re located within a stone’s throw of the town of Banff, in the gorgeous Bow River Valley. Here, you’re able to experience all sorts of fun water activities, and still make it back into town for a delicious meal.

Vermilion Lakes are made up of three different lakes. Vermillion Lakes are not glacier-fed, so don’t expect the bright aqua color you’ll find at Lake Louise or Moraine Lake, but they’re still a beautiful spot to explore.

This series of lakes has a wide array of both water and on-land activities available, from stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and canoeing, to hiking and birdwatching. You’ll find all these great options here at Vermilion Lakes.

It’s also a really excellent spot for photo ops, as you can often catch the reflections of Mount Rundle and Sulphur Mountain in your pics.

Getting to Vermilion Lakes from Banff is easy and is only about a 5-minute jaunt, making it quite a popular spot. You’ll take Mt. Norquay Road to Vermilion Lakes Road, simple and easy!

8. Herbert Lake

Looking to escape the crowds and find a more peaceful lakeside? Head to beautiful Herbert Lake . Located just off the Icefields Parkway, this wonderful mountain lake is often overlooked.

If you’re a fan of those beautiful views of mountains reflected on the water, pop over to Herbert Lake early in the day for some Instagram-worthy snaps.

Not adventurous enough for your taste? Jump on the lakeshore trail here and head to the backside, where you’ll find a diving board. Yes, a diving board, no joke!

Herbert Lake is a bit warmer than the surrounding lakes, so if you’re feeling brave, make a splash here!

Or, for families or those looking for an easy hike, soak up the stunning views of the lake along the easy, flat Herbert Lake Trail loop.

It’ll take you around the whole lake, with very little elevation gain, and in only one mile. It’s an excellent option for those with kids in tow.

Getting to Herbert Lake is easy. Hop on the Trans-Canada, and exit onto the Icefields Parkway just a few miles after Lake Louise. You’ll see the Herbert Lake parking lot on your left.

9. Hector Lake

Hector Lake is another of Banff’s most beautiful lakes.

If you have kids in tow, be sure to plan carefully if you choose to visit here, as reaching the lake requires crossing a river.

This lake may best be suited to adults only, as the river levels may vary.

You’ll also want to be sure to wear water shoes, or other sturdy hiking sandals for the river crossing. If you do decide to visit, you’ll be handsomely rewarded with a glacial lake full of natural beauty.

Many people who visit Hector Lake choose to camp here, and you’ll find pit toilets and picnic tables at the campsite here.

Hector Lake is also known as an excellent lake for fishing rainbow trout, so go ahead and bring along your tackle box.

The hike itself is only 1.6 miles to reach the lake, so it’s not an incredibly long hike, though the river crossing increases the challenge.

Hector Lake can be found by taking the Trans-Canada west from Lake Louise to Icefields Parkway. Travel approximately 11 miles further and Hector Lake parking will be on the left.

Pro Tip: The trailhead is not well-marked here, so arrive in daylight, if possible, and look carefully. You’ll find a rather small wooden sign marking Hector Lake Hike.

10. Johnson Lake

Have your heart set on taking a dip in Banff?  Welcome to Johnson Lake, the warmest lake in Banff. Since many of Banff’s lakes are glacier-fed, they tend to be quite chilly for swimming.

Here, you’ll find ample opportunities to stand up paddleboard, kayak, and swim. This beautiful lake is also really close to the town of Banff, making it a popular spot for daytime activities before dinner in town.

Some of the best picnic areas in Banff may be found here at Johnson Lake. You’ll also find excellent fishing here, in addition to mountain biking and bird-watching.

Looking to hit the trails? The Johnson Lake hike offers scenic views of the surrounding mountain peaks while looping around the lake.

The trail is flat and is an excellent option for families. With a beautiful beach for kids, excellent picnic areas, and more, this lake tops our list of family-friendly lakes in Banff.

Getting here from the town of Banff is quick and easy. Jump on the Trans Canada Highway and take the exit marked for “Two-Jack Lake.” On your right will be signing for Johnson Lake.

11. Bow Lake

If you’re looking for another option for a stunning, turquoise lake in Banff, Bow Lake is a great choice. Located along the Bow River, this lake is fed by meltwater from the Bow Glacier, giving it that distinct aqua-blue color.

Photogs rejoice as Bow Lake is yet another of Banff’s lakes capable of giving you gorgeous mountain views reflected in the water.

On a clear day, you may find the peak of the beautiful Bow Summit reflecting on the lake’s surface.

There are several options here for excellent hiking. The lakeshore trail is rated as easy and fits the bill for families, or those looking for a beautiful, simple hike.

For those looking for a bit more challenge, Bow Glacier Falls would be an intermediate hike, or check out Bow Hut for a challenging hike here.

Beautiful mountain views surround you here, along with Crowfoot Mountain, which rises above Bow Lake.

Be sure to check out the Peyto Lake Viewpoint while you’re here. For a more challenging hike, keep going to the Bow Lake Summit. You’ll be rewarded with views of gorgeous, snowy peaks, and glaciers, right before your eyes.

Expect a considerable crowd along the way to the Peyto Lake Viewpoint, but venture further, and the crowd thins considerably.

You’ll find Bow Lake about an hour from the town of Banff, as you take the Icefields Parkway from the Trans Canada Highway.

12. Consolation Lakes

Consolation Lakes are another incredibly beautiful choice to visit. One of the most popular trails to hike here begins at the base of the Rock Pile at Moraine Lake.

There isn’t a huge elevation gain on this trail, though it begins somewhat rocky. At just under 2 miles, each way, it’s a kid-friendly trail with a gorgeous view of the surrounding Rocky Mountains.

You’ll pass by the beautiful Tower of Babel on this hike, and It’s also dog-friendly, but they must be kept on a leash.

Warm summer months aren’t the only time of year worth visiting Consolation Lakes. The lakes are a popular snowshoeing spot in the winter months, so bring your snowshoes along!

Since Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles, your best bet for getting here is to take the Parks Canada shuttle bus to Moraine Lake and hike to Consolation Lakes.
