Join this friendly small-group tour to the Cotswolds, and see the best of this area of outstanding natural beauty. The Cotswolds are the quintessential English countryside; known for beautiful landscapes, sheep farming traditions and charming villages with honey-coloured stone cottages. This full-day tour travels at a relaxed paced to be fully enjoy the highlights of the Cotswolds.

Our Cotswolds Tour from London begins by travelling north-west towards the scenic Chiltern Hills. It won’t be long before we arrive into ‘the Gateway to The Cotswolds’ and our first stop of the day; the historic town of Burford . This was a prosperous trading village during the Middle Ages and is steeped in local tradition. Burford is also one of the best preserved medieval towns in the region with many of the buildings up to 600 years old and the church of St John the Baptist regarded as one of the finest in England. Whilst here there will be time to explore the town, visit the church and stroll along the picturesque high street.

Next, we’ll continue through the countryside, passing quaint villages as we travel towards our next destination, Bibury , often described as ‘the prettiest village in England’. This is one of the most iconic places in the Cotswolds where we can take a stroll along the river to see the iconic Arlington Row; a set of ancient cottages that are now one of the most symbolic sights of the Cotswolds, as seen in the images above.

This afternoon our journey through the heart of the Cotswolds continues, taking us to the picturesque town of Bourton-on-the-Water . Affectionately known as the ‘Venice of the Cotswolds’ due to its river setting, Bourton is one of the most charming places in the region. There will be plenty of time to enjoy this pretty town; take a stroll along the River Windrush, wander over the small bridges, admire the traditional stone cottages and have a traditional countryside lunch.

We’ll also visit the historic town of Stow-on-the-Wold ; a jumble of ancient inns & antique shops located around the bustling market square. Stow has been an important centre of local trade for centuries and is known for being the location of the last battle of the English Civil War in March 1646. The town has provided inspiration to JRR Tolkien and remains home to ‘England’s oldest pub’.

Throughout the day we’ll pass numerous small & lesser-known villages ; travelling off the beaten track to explore the ‘quieter’ parts of the Cotswolds. Enjoy meandering drives through the rolling hills and along narrow country lanes, passing farms, country estates, and miles of dry-stone walls as we are immersed in this beautiful countryside region.

On arriving at Bibury, you may think you have been transported back to a different age. The village was once described by the British poet, artist and novelist William Morris (1834-96) as “the most beautiful village in England”.

It is one of the most photographed areas in the region and was chosen as a location for the 2007 film ‘Stardust’. Close by, you will find the Bibury Trout Farm and a Saxon Church.

The River Coln flows between the main village street and a watermeadow: together with Arlington Row as a backdrop, it makes one of the most picturesque scenes you will find in the Cotswolds.

Burford is known as the gateway to the Cotswolds. Its High Street slopes from the high Wolds, where you have beautiful views over the open countryside, down to the willow-fringed River Windrush in the pretty Windrush valley.

Regularly voted one of the prettiest villages in England , Bourton-on -the-Water has a unique appeal to visitors and residents alike. Known as the Venice of the Cotswolds, this one village offers a wealth of attractions and shops, restaurants and tea rooms, or simply the space for you to enjoy some tranquil time by the River Windrush, spanned by its five arched bridges.

Bourton-on-the-Water’s most prized feature is its tranquil river. Fed from many springs, its source is approximately ten miles from the village, and even in the 1976 drought, the flow continued. Where the river enters the village centre, over the rapids next to the Old Mill, its clear waters flow under a miscellany of arched stone bridges past the green with its banks of Cotswold stone.

The earliest evidence of a Christian presence in Bourton-on-the-Water goes back as far as 709 AD, when a wooden church was built on land donated by the local king, centred to the Abbey of Evesham. Today the parish Church remains the focus of a lively worshipping community in the village of Bourton-on-the-Water, extending a warm welcome to visitors.

The Cotswolds is a stunning region only 100 miles from London. It covers palaces, oh so cute honey-coloured stone houses, market towns, green hedges, winding roads and is essentially the England of Hollywood movies.

Indeed many films and tv shows have been shot in the Cotswolds – including Downton Abbey. The close proximity makes it super easy to take a Cotswolds Tour from London.

A Cotswolds day tour from London is the most common type but I do encourage you to also consider spending the night in this beautiful area to allow for more exploration.

The Cotswolds covers a big area – almost 800 square miles. The single largest town in the Cotswolds is Cirencester. However, the key things to visit in the Cotswolds are its charming villages.

There are market towns such as Cirencester, Tetbury, Stroud and Tewkesbury. The cutest towns are Stow on the Wold, Upper Slaughter, Lower Slaughter, Bourton on the Water, Chipping Norton and Chipping Campden. 

In the Cotswolds Hills, the two main towns are Painswick and Snowshill. Most of the tours of the Cotswolds from London visit some of these cute towns.

If you are looking for a weekend away in the Cotswolds I would highly recommend staying at the lovely Bruern Cottages near Kingham . This area is a fantastic base for visiting the towns of the Cotswolds such as Stow-on-the-Wold, Burford and Chipping Norton.

The cottages are literally in the middle of the Cotswolds so there is easy access to all the key towns.

Michael Paul Holidays is a Bristol-based online holiday property agency. They have a fantastic range of four and five stars rated self-catering accommodation that includes cottages, lodges, and log cabins.

Their phone operators have stayed at or have great knowledge of all their accommodation – this is great for getting advice.

Every property they have listed has been personally visited so you can be confident that all their properties are of high quality.

Bruern Stables were built in 1882 to accommodate the needs of Bruern Abbey, which is across the road. In 1947 the entire estate was purchased by Michael Astor and his wife Nancy.

The process of turning the stables into 12 luxury self-catering cottages began in 1993. Unlike many luxury cottage rentals, it is possible to stay at Bruern Cottages for just 2 nights or more.

The majority of cottages require a one-week minimum stay – this makes Bruern perfect for a weekend away.

The converted stables at Bruern Cottages are beautiful. The exterior features the beautiful honeyed stone look of the Cotswolds.

Once inside each cottage is uniquely furnished in a boutique luxury style that feels incredibly comfortable. Farrow and Ball have provided most of the paint and the fabrics of many well known British designers are used.

Most of the antiques and furniture have been locally sourced. If you enjoy antiques do ask the owners for their local list of hot spots.

I was delighted to find one of my favourite brands, Elemis, in the bathrooms. Plus towels, robes etc all supplied by another favourite The White Company.

A group of 6 of us stayed across Aintree and Sandown Cottages. The cottages are literally attached to each other which makes it super easy to have your own space as well as spending time with friends.

Both cottages have large kitchens. Sandown has a large open area for the kitchen and living room areas.

Upstairs at Aintree are beautifully furnished bedrooms – a large master double and then two twins with bathrooms. Sandown has a double bedroom and ensuite on the ground floor and twin room upstairs.

Without question, my favourite part of both cottages was the living areas. Bruern Cottages have done a wonderful job making these living areas so comfortable yet stylish.

Once you sit down it is hard to imagine leaving. I simply craved poor weather so I could justify sitting on the couch and popping on the tv (which comes with full Sky to keep everyone happy).

The cottages are self-catering but Bruern knows that often when you arrive at a cottage you haven’t had time to get to a store. They provide a fantastic welcome pack that is stocked with local products.

Salted butter, fresh eggs, cheese, local bacon and sausages, cake and even bubbles (or wine. It was such a wonderful package to receive on arrival.

Bruern caters for literally everyone. I can imagine a romantic weekend here with a partner as much as I can imagine a multi-generational family. The cottages themselves have full wifi, sky etc for teenagers.

The outdoor areas are perfect for younger kids and running around. There is an entire play area kitted out with toys outside the fantastic spa and gym area.

The indoor pool is heated so it is ready to be used no matter what the weather. For warmer days there is a lovely outdoor area with sun loungers.

The spa area also has treatment rooms and Bruern Cottages can organise massages, facials etc if booked in advance. And the gym has the latest equipment.

No wonder Bruern Cottages is so often full of repeat customers.

For the ultimate in the English countryside don’t miss a visit to Daylesford Organic . This luxury farm has an amazing shop filled with food and home design items.

There is a restaurant, a spa, places to stay, a cooking school and so much more. It is a stunning place to visit.

There are some fantastic UK City and Sightseeing passes which offer free entry to all must-see attractions & great deals.

If you’re coming from outside the UK then London is the best place to fly into for the Cotswolds. Option one is to stay in London and then take one of the Cotswolds day tour from London options above.

Option two is taking a Cotswolds day trip from London by train. Paddington is the key station for trains to the Cotswolds – some great value options for UK rail passes are listed below.

Option three is hiring a car and driving yourself to the Cotswolds. Heathrow is a great place to pick up a hire car for the Cotswolds. Heathrow is the closest airport to the Cotswolds.

Also, picking up the car at Heathrow means you will avoid central London traffic which is always a good idea.

London has several airports. It can be confusing and expensive to get from each of the airports into central London. And the last thing you need after a flight. It is much easier to organize tickets before you fly.

Heathrow is the most common airport for international flights. The fastest way to get from Heathrow into Central London is the Heathrow Express . This train only takes 15 minutes to get from Heathrow to Paddington Station and runs 4 times an hour. The Heathrow Express is much faster than a cab or any other option.

There is also a bus or coach option which drops passengers at Victoria Station. This is a cheap option but you will have to deal with London traffic. If you are taking this option during peak hour it could take up to 2 hours each way.

The lowest cost way to get from Heathrow to central London is the tube . The tube is actually one of the fastest options as well – and will get you the closest to your final destination.

Gatwick Airport is south of London and can be quite the distance in a car. The Gatwick Express is the fastest option into London and runs directly from Gatwick to Victoria Station.

Artist Residence is located in Pimlico which is fabulously central. It is in a gorgeous 5 store regency building and has a cute bar.

The Portobello Hotel is located in one of London’s best known and cutest neighbourhoods Notting Hill. This is also the hotel where Kate Moss and Johnny Depp filled up the bath with champagne. The hotel is located on a quiet street but is a great location.

The Great Northern Hotel is ridiculously close to Kings Cross and St Pancras stations which is incredibly convenient. The hotel dates back to 1854 but has had a major refurb so it feels fresh and modern.

The Hoxton hotel is in the heart of East London in Shoreditch and a perfect base for exploration. The rooms aren’t huge but the location makes up for it – as does the great value for London with rooms starting at £99 a night.

Visit Great Britain has some fantastic offers that are just for those who live outside the UK. It is possible to make significant savings if you book certain things before you travel – not to mention how much easier it is to already have tickets for things when you arrive.

If you have just moved to the UK you can buy these passes in your first six months of residency.

If you prefer travelling via a bus to train then check out the skimmer pass national express coach . National Express travels to over 1000 locations and has free wifi, USB and power sockets, onboard entertainment, air conditioning and reclining leather seats.

How to plan a day trip from London to Cotswolds (with or without a car)

The Cotswolds’ quintessentially English landscape of rolling hills, honey-stone villages, scenic viewpoints, castles and country houses make it one of the most popular areas of the country to visit. Ideally you’d want a few days to explore the Cotswolds, but if you’re limited on time you can still get a taste of the region’s highlights by taking a day trip from London to Cotswolds.

This post has all the details you need to plan your trip, and includes suggested itineraries for visiting the Cotswolds from London in a day – including options both with and without a car.

A day trip from London to Cotswolds by car

If your time is limited, then having a car is the easiest way to explore the Cotswolds. You can see more in a day as you’re not tied to bus or train timetables, you can stop off wherever you fancy, get off the beaten track and visit some of the Cotswolds’ lesser-known, quieter locations.

The Cotswolds are easy to reach from London, which is around 100 miles/2.5 hours’ drive away, depending on which part of the region you’re visiting. Follow the M4 through Swindon to reach the south Cotswolds, or take the A40 through Oxford for the north and eastern Cotswolds.

Tips for driving in the Cotswolds

Driving in the Cotswolds isn’t much different to driving anywhere else in the UK, though it can be a bit of a learning curve if you’re used to driving on the right-hand side of the road. If you’re hiring a car then it’s a good idea to get the smallest car you need as roads in the Cotswolds are often pretty narrow, so having a small car will make both manoeuvring and parking easier.

Many country lanes are only wide enough for one car and although there are some passing places, be prepared to pull off onto the verge if you need to to let other cars go past. Drive slowly, keep your eyes on the road (however distracting the views might be) and be prepared to stop.

The Cotswolds isn’t all that well signposted and the region’s network of small roads can be confusing, so it’s a good idea to use a GPS or sat nav to find your way around.

Though beware that mobile and GPS reception can be patchy in some areas so set your destination in advance – and think about picking up an old-school paper map * to keep as a backup.

When you’re planning your trip, double check the times between each stop as well as the distance, as the narrow winding roads mean it often takes longer to travel from one place to the next than the mileage would suggest, and you don’t want to spend all day travelling. We have suggested three different itineraries for a day trip from London to Cotswolds by car below to get you started.

Finally, parking is limited in most Cotswold villages, especially at weekends and during school holidays. So it’s a good idea to get to popular villages like Bourton-on-the-Water or Bibury as early as you can before spaces fill up. There’s usually a mix of car parks and on-street parking – our locals’ guides give details of parking spots in each of the main Cotswold towns and villages.

Car hire in the Cotswolds

If you don’t have your own car, you can hire one for the day, either by hiring one in London or by catching the train to one of the larger towns and cities in or around the Cotswolds and picking up a hire car there. These include Cheltenham, Stroud, Bath, Oxford and Stratford-upon-Avon – the best place to hire a car will depend on which area of the Cotswolds you want to visit.

Beware that some places have limited car hire options so you’ll need to book in advance. And in larger cities car hire offices are sometimes miles from the train station and time spent travelling between the two can eat into the limited time have for your day in the Cotswolds.

These are the most convenient car hire offices for the main train stations around the Cotswolds, which are either walkable or you can take a taxi from outside the train station:

• Cheltenham: Midlands Vehicle Rental Ltd and Enterprise (15–20-minute walk from station)
• Stroud: Midlands Vehicle Rental Ltd (20-minute walk)
• Bath: Hertz – Windsor Bridge (25-minute walk)
• Oxford: Hertz or Thrifty (15-minute walk)
• Stratford-upon-Avon: Enterprise (20-minute walk).

3 great Cotswold day trip itineraries by car

The Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty covers a huge 800 square miles, so you’re never going to be able to see it all in one day. So when you’re planning your trip, it’s best to pick an area or a selection of villages you want to see and build your itinerary around them.

These three itineraries for a day trip from London to Cotswolds by car focus on different parts of the region. A lot of suggested itineraries also include cities like Bath, Oxford or Stratford-upon-Avon which could easily eat up half a day, so we’ve focused on just the Cotswolds itself.

The mileage isn’t huge for any of the itineraries – you could drive straight through in a few hours – but there’s lots to see so we’ve allowed time to explore each stop. Mileage is based on a departure from central London, so may need to be adjusted slightly depending on your start point.

Itinerary 1: The big names

This itinerary takes in some of the Cotswolds’ most iconic towns and villages. Head east out of London on the A40 via Oxford to your first stop in Burford (74 miles/2 hours). This Oxfordshire town, known as the Gateway to the Cotswolds, has pretty stone cottages on Burford Hill, antique shops, tasty lardy cakes at Huffkins Bakery and a famous garden centre on the edge of town.

Next head west to the village of Bibury (10 miles/15 minutes) where you’ll find Arlington Row, one of England’s most photographed streets with its line of flower-decked medieval weavers’ houses. Then travel north from Bibury towards Bourton-on-the-Water (12 miles/20 minutes).

Nicknamed the ‘Venice of the Cotswolds’, Bourton is probably the area’s most famous town, with picturesque stone bridges crossing the River Windrush. You can see the town in miniature at the Model Village or visit the Cotswold Motoring Museum and Birdland. There’s also a good selection of riverside pubs and cafés for lunch (Bakery on the Water does a tasty sausage roll).

Next it’s just 1.5 miles/5 minutes’ drive north to tiny Lower Slaughter , with its waterside mill. There’s also a lovely short walk to neighbouring Upper Slaughter (1 mile each way).

Then carry on north to your final Cotswold stop at Stow-on-the-Wold (3 miles/6 minutes). This historic wool town is centred around its market square, which is lined with shops and cafés. There’s also St Edward’s Church with its Yew Tree Door, the old stocks and plenty of historic pubs, including The Porch House, which is said to be the oldest pub in Britain at over 1000 years old.

Finally travel back towards Burford and retrace your steps back to London (84 miles/2.5 hours).

Itinerary 2: The Northern Cotswolds

Our second itinerary focuses on the north of the Cotswolds, with a mix of well-known and quieter spots. Start by travelling to Chipping Campden from London via the M40 to Banbury and then the A429 (100 miles/2.5 hours). Chipping Campden has over 250 listed buildings and was a centre for the Arts and Crafts movement, with works by local artists at the Court Barn Museum.

Next head south towards Broadway , stopping off at the Broadway Tower (4 miles/7 minutes), a fairytale folly with panoramic views – and a nuclear bunker hidden underneath it. Then carry on into Broadway village (4 miles/7 minutes) with its boutique shops, restaurants and pubs, including the Lygon Arms, a 1300s coaching inn where Oliver Cromwell once stayed the night.

The next couple of stops are smaller, quieter villages which don’t see so many visitors and have plenty of unspoilt charm. They don’t have a lot of attractions but are good for a wander around to soak up the scenic sights. First head south to peaceful Stanton (4 miles/7 minutes).

Then travel on to Snowshill (5 miles/11 minutes), which is home to the National Trust property Snowshill Manor with its quirky collections – and if you’re visiting in summer you might want to stop off at the Cotswold Lavender fields which are just a mile outside of the village.

Continue south to your last stop at Winchcombe (9 miles/20 minutes). Allow time for a look around Sudeley Castle, which was built in 1442 and is the burial place of Henry VIII’s last wife Katherine Parr. Then travel back to London via the A40 through Oxford (95 miles/2.5 hours).

Itinerary 3: The Southern Cotswolds

This final itinerary focuses on the south of the Cotswolds, which isn’t as well-visited as the north part of the region, but has more than its share of beautiful locations. From London, take the M40 south via Swindon to Malmesbury (96 miles/2.5 hours). This market town is known for its 12th-century abbey where there are ruins and five acres of gardens to explore.

Next travel on to the historic wool town of Tetbury (5 miles/12 minutes) to admire the houses along the Chipping Steps, visit the Market House and shop for antiques. After lunch, carry on south to Westonbirt Arboretum (4 miles/12 minutes) which is one of the best collections of trees and shrubs in the country, and is especially beautiful in autumn when the leaves turn red and gold.

Then continue on to Castle Combe (10 miles/20 minutes). This picture-perfect village looks like something from another century, with no street lights or telegraph poles, and has been used as a filming location for movies and TV series including War Horse and Stardust .

Finally travel outside the official Cotswolds boundary to another popular film location – Lacock (9 miles/18 minutes). The village is owned by the National Trust and has a 13th-century abbey (as seen in the Harry Pott er films), the Fox Talbot Museum of photography, and plenty of thatched and half-timbered cottages. Then travel back to London (102 miles/2.5 hours) along the M4.

A day trip from London to Cotswolds by public transport

Having a car is undoubtedly the easiest way to explore the Cotswolds. But although getting around the Cotswolds by public transport is more fiddly, it’s still possible to plan a day trip from London by train and bus if you want to explore independently and don’t want to or can’t drive.

Trains don’t reach the Cotswolds’ most famous destinations, but you can take the train to some of the region’s bigger towns and cities and then connect onto local buses from there. Bus services aren’t very frequent though so you do need to plan your trip in advance – or we have three suggested itineraries for a day trip from London to Cotswolds by train and bus listed below.

Tips for visiting the Cotswolds by train and bus

Trains from London run to the main towns and cities on the edge of the Cotswolds. The best destination will depend on which part of the Cotswolds you want to visit, but there are trains from London Paddington to Cheltenham , Stroud, Moreton-in-Marsh , Kingham, Chippenham, Bath and Oxford . Or services from London Marylebone to Banbury and Stratford-upon-Avon .

If you want to save money on train travel in the UK , it’s worth booking in advance to take advantage of the discounted Advance tickets. These restrict you to travelling on a specific train service, but are usually much cheaper than a flexible open ticket and you can reserve a seat.

It’s also cheapest to travel outside peak hours (6.30am–9.30am and 3.30pm–6.30pm) – though that’s likely to be difficult if you only have a day in the Cotswolds. But you can save a third on rail fares with a Railcard * – these cost £30 and there are different versions for 16–25s, 25–30s, Seniors, two adults travelling together or Friends and Family (up to four adults and four children).

There are also a couple of local transport passes. The Cotswolds Discoverer One Day Pass (£13 for adults or £6.50 for children) includes unlimited travel on Stagecoach buses (excluding the S2 from Cheltenham to Oxford) and local trains after 8.50am from Monday–Friday. Or a DayRider ticket gives unlimited travel on Stagecoach West buses for the day (£8 for adults or £7 for children).

The Cotswolds has a reasonably comprehensive bus system which connects the region’s main towns and villages, but services aren’t very frequent, finish early and often don’t run at all on Sundays or public holidays. They’re also run by eight different companies which makes them a bit awkward to navigate – but our public transport guide has a map showing all local services.

3 great Cotswold day trip itineraries without a car

These three itineraries for a day trip from London to Cotswolds by train and bus take in some of the highlights of the area. It’s easy to just take a train to cities like Bath, Oxford or Stratford-upon-Avon for the day but these itineraries focus on the smaller Cotswolds towns and villages.

Because bus services are limited, the itineraries only includes a few stops so you have time to look around and don’t just spend all day travelling, and allow time for any delays. Each itinerary includes details of which train and bus services to take – though make sure to double check times (our full Cotswolds by public transport post has links to all local bus timetables).

Itinerary 1: Bourton-on-the Water and Stow-on-the-Wold (via Moreton)

Moreton-in-Marsh is one of the best-located train stations if you’re visiting the Cotswolds from London without a car. This itinerary uses the number 801 bus from Moreton to visit two of the area’s most famous towns in one day – Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow-on-the-Wold .

Start by catching an early morning direct train from London Paddington at 07.50 which arrives into Moreton-in-Marsh at 09.17. When you arrive in Moreton, the 801 bus meets the train and departs from the station at 09.25, taking 35 minutes to reach Bourton-on-the-Water.

Then you have around four hours to explore Bourton – cross the bridges over the River Windrush, visit the Model Village or Motoring Museum and have lunch in a cosy local pub. Or you can take a scenic walk to the nearby village of Lower Slaughter (45 minutes each way).

At 14.15, get back on board the 801 bus for the short journey back to Stow-on-the-Wold, arriving there at 14.30. Then you have a couple of hours to spend in Stow, checking out its Market Square, antique shops and the magical Yew Tree Door at St Edward’s Church.

Then catch the 801 bus back to Moreton-in-Marsh, departing Stow at 17.15 and arriving in Moreton at 17.27. You can connect onto the 17.48 train back to London Paddington (which arrives at 19.29) or stay in Moreton for dinner and catch a later train back to London if you prefer.

Itinerary 2: Cirencester and Bibury (via Kemble)

Our second itinerary takes us further south to Cirencester – capital of the Cotswolds – where you connect on to the picturesque village of Bibury , home to the photogenic houses of Arlington Row. Start by taking the direct 08.32 train from London Paddington to Kemble, arriving at 09.41.

After arriving in Kemble, catch the 882 bus for the short journey to Cirencester, departing at 10.00 and arriving at 10.12. Then you have around 45 minutes to grab a coffee (Jack’s and Pretty & Pip are a couple of our favourites) before taking the 855 bus to Bibury at 11.00, arriving at 11.17.

Spend the next three hours exploring Bibury. As well as Arlington Row there’s also the walk along the edge of the Rack Isle water meadows, Bibury Trout Farm and St Mary’s Church to visit. And the village has two good pubs for lunch – The Swan and The Catherine Wheel.

At 14.19, catch the 855 bus which arrives back in Cirencester at 14.37. You then have a couple of hours to spend in Cirencester. You can find out more about the town’s Roman history at the Corinium Museum, visit the abbey grounds or shop for local arts and crafts at New Brewery Arts.

Finally, take the 822 bus back to Kemble, which departs Cirencester at 17.40 and arrives in Kemble 17.54, in time to catch the 18.20 train back to London Paddington, which gets in at 19.37.

Itinerary 3: Broadway and Chipping Campden (via Stratford)

The third itinerary visits the north Cotswolds, using the train from London to Stratford-upon-Avon to reach the towns of Broadway and Chipping Campden . Start by taking the 08.07 train from London Marylebone, changing in Leamington Spa and reaching Stratford-upon-Avon at 10.13.

Once you get to Stratford, catch the number 2 bus to Chipping Campden, which leaves at 11.05 and arrives at 11.45. You then have a couple of hours in Chipping Campden to see the Market Hall and St James Church, admire the historic buildings and visit the Court Barn Museum.

Next board the number 1 bus at 13.45 and travel on to Broadway, arriving at 14.05. Broadway has a good selection of cafés and restaurants for lunch (our favourites include Russell’s Fish and Chips and the Broadway Deli) and is also home to the Broadway Museum and Gordon Russell Design Museum. Or you can take the a 4.4-mile/2-hour circular walk to the hilltop Broadway Tower .

Then take the number 1 bus to Moreton-in-Marsh, leaving at 18.10 and arriving at 18.39, and catch the 19.10 train from Moreton to London Paddington via Oxford, which arrives at 20.59.

One-day Cotswolds tours from London

Another easy option if you want to spend a day the Cotswolds but don’t have a car or want to battl with bus timetables is to take a guided tour. There are a variety of different day tours available from London to the Cotswolds, each with different durations, stops and transport options.

This full-day tour * (9.5 hours) from London by minibus departs from Earl’s Court and stops in Burford, Bibury, Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow-on-the-Wold, with time to look around at each stop. Or there’s a similar tour * (11 hours) which includes lunch at the Swan Hotel in Bibury.

There are also various day tours from London which also include visits to other historic cities in the region – though this does limit the time you get to spend in the Cotswolds:

• Cotswolds plus Oxford *: 10-hour minibus tour visiting Oxford, Burford and Bibury.
• Cotswolds plus Stratford *: 10-hour minibus tour visiting Stratford-upon-Avon, Bibury and Bourton-on-the-Water.

Or if you don’t fancy spending so long on the road, you can also catch the train to the Cotswolds and then join a tour there, which means you can see more in a day:

• From Stratford-upon-Avon/Moreton-in-Marsh *: 8-hour minibus tour including Chipping Campden, Broadway Tower, Stow-on-the-Wold, Bibury and Bourton-on-the-Water.
• From Oxford *: 7-hour minibus tour visiting Great Tew, Stow-on-the-Wold, Lower Slaughter, Bourton-on-the-Water, Burford and Minster Lovell Hall.

Thank you very much for all your comments, your advises and information. This is the best web page in all the months I've been looking for a way to travel to Cotswolds without a car. I just have a question about itinerary 1: If I take the scenic walk from Bourton on the Water to Lower Slaughter, then where do I get the 801 bus from there to go to Stow on the Wold? Do I get it at Lower Slaughter? Or must I walk the rest of the way to Stow on the Wold? Thank you very very much, I loved this article!!!! (by the way, do you know if the 801 line is about to change its timetable from March 2024 on?)

Thank you! No you can catch the 801 from the Slaughter Pike stop which is on the main A429 road a short walk from Lower Slaughter. Not aware of the timetable changing anytime soon but it's worth checking just before you travel. Have a great trip.

Hi, January is low season in the Cotswolds – the weather is fairly cold at an average 6ºC (43ºF) and there can be some rain (or snow if you're lucky!). It's quiet though so no crowds and lower prices. Some tours don't run off season though so I'd advise checking and booking in advance.

You head northwest out of London, passing through the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The picturesque countryside here has inspired the television shows Midsomer Murders and Vicar of Dibley.

Your first stop is Oxford, where you have time to explore the precincts of the many colleges, climb to the vantage points to admire the skyline, or see the art and antiquities collections in the Ashmolean Museum.

You stop in Burford, the ‘Gateway to the Cotswolds’. This is a small market town with enormous character and depth. The main street is lined with all those quaint properties that you’ve dreamt of owning. You have time here to take in the local charm and hospitality; and if you’re hungry, you can try a traditional English ‘Afternoon Tea’.

Then, you make the short journey to Bibury. This place was described by William Morris as the prettiest village in England, and Henry Ford wanted to dismantle it and ship it back to the USA. You have time here to stroll to the famous and fairytale-like Arlington Row.

After a full day exploring the city of Oxford and the villages of the Cotswolds, you embark on the comfortable return journey to London.

This route may be reversed on some occasions.

Do you offer hotel pickups in the departure cities?

The UK and Ireland's historic city centres are full of narrow streets and winding roads. So, to speed up your departure, we only pick up from our central meeting points. What's more is leaving the city using the most direct route also reduces the carbon footprint of our tours.

Is there parking close to the departure point?

We don't recommend bringing your car into the centre of our departure cities. It can be hard to find parking, and there are excellent public transportation services.

When should I get to the departure point?

Arrive 15 minutes before your departure time. Due to waiting restrictions, we can't wait for you if you're late.

What happens if I'm late or miss the tour?

If you're late for your tour, our cancellation policy applies. 100% charges are applicable, and you will not be entitled to a refund or alternative.

What are your cancellation policies?

For one-day tours: You'll receive a full refund if you cancel 24 hours or more before the tour departure

For tours of between two and nine days: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 15 or more days before the tour departure

For tours of 10 or more days: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 21 or more days before the tour departure

For all European packaged tours: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 42 days before the tour departure.

If you cancel inside these notice periods, full charges will apply and no refunds will be issued.

Can Itineraries change?

Your tour will always follow the itinerary as closely as possible. Your driver-guide will keep you up to date on the road, and we'll try to get in touch about any large changes prior to your departure.

Can I pre-book a specific seat?

Due to logistical reasons, we're unable to let you pre-book a seat on the bus. But our comfortable 16-seat mini-coaches have huge windows. So, you'll always get a good view.

Are there toilets on the bus?

Unfortunately, we have no on-board toilet facilities, but you'll have regular comfort breaks.

How do you cater for people with accessibility needs?

Do you take children on your tours?

We regret we don't carry children under the age of five on our scheduled tours.

You can ask us about the tours we recommend for younger children. And if your child is less than 1.35m tall, you should let us know, so we can provide them with a suitable booster seat.

How much time do I get off the bus?

We want you to enjoy Britain and Ireland. And we believe the best way to do this is to get you off the mini-coach and out exploring. So, we give you plenty of time to take photos, go walking, and explore ancient ruins.

Why do you exclude visitor attractions?

We exclude visitor attractions in your tour price because it lets you travel your way. It means you can pamper yourself with a luxury lunch or skip an attraction whenever you feel like it.

Do we need to bring our own lunch?

You don't need to. We stop in small towns, villages, and rural eateries where you can choose whatever meal pleases both your taste buds and your budget.

Should I tip the driver-guide?

Let's be honest, our driver-guides would never refuse a cheeky bonus. But it's up to you, and the amount is entirely at your discretion.

What about travel insurance?

We advise you take out travel insurance.
