Air Transat flights : Guide and tips to save money

travel air transat

Air travel can be expensive when you don’t know how to shop around for the best fares. Fortunately, you can save money by booking Air Transat flights.

Air Transat , renowned for its flights to Europe, the United States, Canada and other sunny destinations, is a major player in the Quebec and Canadian air markets.

In this guide, we give you all the tips you need to find cheap Air Transat flights and save on your next plane tickets.

Air Transat or Air Canada: which is better?

For Canadians, Air Transat and Air Canada are the two main airlines available for the vast majority of flights. The big difference between the two companies is that Air Transat targets mainly leisure travel, while Air Canada tries to attract business customers as well.

As a result, Air Transat will serve more secondary airports in Europe and the South than Air Canada. In addition, Air Transat may offer flights on more dates or on a different day of the week, which may be more convenient for you.

For those looking for an enhanced flying experience , Air Canada’s Signature business class is the way to go. Furthermore, when we take a look at the scope of its destinations, we can see that Air Transat doesn’t go as far as Asia, Africa and Oceania, unlike Air Canada.

Direct flights with Air Transat

Here’s a map of Air Transat ’s direct flight coverage. You can find this information on the Flight Connections website.

Current Air Transat flights

Here is a table showing Air Transat ‘s current direct flights from their Canadian airports of operation. You can quickly see, in bold, the destinations that Air Transat serves exclusively with direct flights, as opposed to Air Canada.

For example, for a family trip to Portugal , the most practical itinerary for your vacation might be to land in Lisbon and depart from Porto. Air Transat is therefore the preferred choice between the two airlines, especially with young children , as these flights are direct.

Similarly, Air Canada is not offering international flights from Quebec City airport at the moment. So flights with Air Transat are the only direct options available.

As of autumn 2023, Air Transat and Porter Airlines are now partners, offering codeshare flights! This means that connecting opportunities are greatly increased for North American travellers. In all, the two airlines serve more than 80 destinations.

Codeshare flights allow simplified check-in and transfer of baggage from one airline to another when connecting. Read all about this new partnership in this article :

Air Transat's different flight tickets

Air Transat ’s official website offers a multitude of air ticket options for travellers looking to explore the world.

Economy Class fare options

Club class fare options, air transat's different fare classes: how to choose.

Every trip is unique, and Air Transat offers the freedom to choose the fare that’s best for each individual, with the flexibility to change or cancel flights, plus a host of other benefits. Although you can get excellent travel insurance by paying with the appropriate credit card , it’s best to select the right fare class when buying a plane ticket. In fact, if you change your mind, this is not a situation eligible for protection by insurers .

In addition, any mishaps that may occur during your trip, such as flight delays or lost luggage , can be reimbursed and compensated through your credit card insurance as well!

As far as luggage and seat selection are concerned, many credit cards offer annual travel credits to reimburse such expenses. So, to save on your Air Transat tickets, it may be a good idea to opt for the Eco Budget fare and pay for your seat selection with the travel credit on the National Bank World Elite Mastercard ® !

What’s more, this card gives you unlimited free access to the National Bank Lounge , so you can eat and drink before your Air Transat flight. So you don’t have to pay extra for the gourmet Club Class meal either!

Tips for cheap flights with Air Transat

The best way to find airline tickets at the best prices (all airlines included) is to use Google Flights . Indeed, with the Explore tool, you can easily spot dates that are more affordable at a glance.

For Europe, Air Transat flights will often appear at the top of the results list:

When should you buy your plane ticket with Air Transat?

Contrary to popular belief, it’s a myth to say that there are certain dates or days of the week when it’s best to buy a plane ticket because it’s always a question of supply and demand.

However, Google Flights can show you the best time to book, based on data from previous years, and display a calendar of the cheapest dates too. It’s certain that there will be less demand to leave or return on a weekday than on a Friday night.

Why are flights with stopovers cheaper?

If you’ve ever played around with flight search engines, you’ve probably seen more affordable prices to Europe with a stopover from Toronto than direct from Montreal.

Here’s an example where the segment between Montreal and London is the same on both routes, but adding a return trip to Toronto lowers the price.

Once again, it’s a question of supply and demand, and it’s not a mistake; that’s how pricing works. It’s very important to note that you can’t simply book the Toronto itinerary and decide to embark (or disembark) in Montreal. This practice is known as “ skiplagging ” and involves considerable risks and consequences.

Is it better to book your flight on platforms like Expedia or Skyscanner to save money?

Most of the time, the prices you can find on platforms like Expedia or Skyscanner are similar to what you can get on the airline’s official website.

Therefore, it’s best to book directly so you don’t have a third party to deal with if there’s ever a problem; third parties and airlines often tend to throw the ball back and forth on this.

Using credit card points for cheap flights with Air Transat

At present, Air Transat does not have a loyalty program like Air Canada with Aeroplan . So, to save on Air Transat flights, you’ll have to turn to credit card rewards points (travel points), specifically those that can be used to reimburse any travel purchase or against any expense.

All credit card issuers have travel points programs:

  • American Express Membership Rewards
  • BMO Rewards
  • NBC Rewards
  • CIBC Aventura
  • Desjardins Bonusdollars
  • HSBC Rewards
  • MBNA Rewards
  • RBC Avion Rewards
  • Scene+ Scotia

Some offer you the possibility :

  • book with any travel agency or airline
  • while others will have their own online agency, often offering the same prices.

Of course, it’s best to choose programs that offer more flexibility, but don’t overlook those that offer a little less!

Earn points to pay for a trip with Air Transat

There are two main ways to earn enough points to cover the cost of a flight with Air Transat :

  • get a welcome bonus when you sign up for a new credit card
  • maximize returns and rewards by paying for everyday purchases with the right credit card

In reality, you need a strategy that encompasses both. For example, the National Bank World Elite Mastercard ® gives 5X points when used at the grocery store (the biggest expense item for families) or in restaurants, so points add up fast! This is equivalent to a 5% return on your flights with Air Transat .

Then you can quickly build up your points portfolio with a welcome bonus, which you’ll receive once you’ve met the requirements. This generous contribution of points is a one-off. So you have to mix the two avenues.

If you’ve collected several types of points, how do you use them when it’s time to book?

Ideally, you don’t want to spread out too much. On the other hand, you can buy plane tickets with a credit card and one type of point, and keep the other points to pay for your accommodation. It’s an indirect way of saving on plane tickets with points; the savings are just distributed differently. It is also possible to pay with several credit cards when dealing with a travel agent.

How can I reduce the price of a plane ticket using points?

Each of the above programs has its own way of doing things, but the general principle is the same: you book your flight with Air Transat (or any other airline), and then redeem your points for a statement credit. Your purchase will be reimbursed with points.

Here’s an example with American Express Membership Rewards:

It should be noted, however, that we can maximize the value of our points with certain programs. In fact, American Express Membership Rewards points will always have a value of 10,000 points = $100, whether you use them to reimburse your airline ticket or for groceries.

However, NBC Rewards points have a higher redemption value when you book a flight, whether with Air Transat or another airline, on their Rewards à la Carte platform versus an account credit on your shopping :

We can see that it’s better to use NBC Rewards points for travel than for an account credit on any purchase. Finally, by booking with their platform, you can also earn more points!

Guides for each program can be found here :

Save on all-inclusive with Voyage Air Transat

For fans of all-inclusive packages with Air Transat , points are used in the same way as for airline tickets.

Here’s an example of how to redeem NBC Rewards points to save on an all-inclusive trip with Air Transat :

Bottom Line

Air Transat stands out for its extensive coverage in Europe and for vacations in the South. Airline tickets are often more affordable than their competitors. Then, with little touches like the Kids Club, it’s easy to see why many families choose Air Transat .

With a multitude of credit card rewards programs to choose from, the challenge is simply to maximize your savings on flights!

Air Transat reaching for new horizon with flights to Africa

Howard Hardee

Eastern Canada’s Air Transat has big ambitions to expand transatlantic flying with its growing fleet of long-range jets, and Africa is now within reach.

Chief executive Annick Guerard told reporters on 23 April that the Montreal-headquartered carrier remains on track to  launch its first flights to that continent this summer. Transat plans to operate twice-weekly flights from Montreal to Marrakesh, Morocco starting on 12 June, with a reduced schedule of once weekly flights during winter months.

“We’re very pleased about the booking so far,” Guerard says. “The response from consumers has been very positive since the day we announced this route… We have spoken about the fact that we want to increase our network in North Africa and potentially other places in Africa.”

“This is definitely a goal and part of our strategy in terms of network development,” she adds.

Air Transat has long-term plans for expanded flying to Africa from its position in Eastern Canada

However, Transat’s planned Africa expansion is being hindered by the Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan (GTF) engine issues that have been affecting A320neo-family aircraft operators globally, from Air Baltic   to JetBlue to  Volaris . “Our development will not go as fast as planned, considering the challenges we’re facing with Pratt & Whitney engines at this point,” Guerard says.

P&W has recalled more than 1,000 PW1000G-family engines, requiring airlines ground jets so the engines can be taken off-wing to address a defective disc issue it flagged last year. The repair process can last hundreds of days. Parent company RTX estimates that the number of jets grounded by the potential manufacturing defect has peaked . It  remains unclear exactly how many aircraft are currently out of service for inspections, but Cirium data and analysts suggest the figure is greater than 500.

During Air Transat’s annual call with investors on 23 April, an English-speaking translator for Guerard elaborated on the carrier’s engine troubles.

”It’s not a security problem, but these problems mean the engines need to be returned to the manufacturer more frequently,” she says. “There is a bottleneck of Pratt & Whitney engines from different airlines that is accumulating… There is an impact on costs because we have to lease planes in the short-term market, which is saturated because of this situation.”

During the company’s 14 March earnings call, Transat disclosed plans to   temporarily lease three Airbus A330s to help it cover Canada’s upcoming summer travel season. Lack of available aircraft is holding back the carrier’s revenue-generating potential as it seeks sustained profitability, and Transat is negotiating ”compensation for these losses”, Guerard says.

P&W has reportedly reached compensation agreements with nine GTF customers, including an $150-$200 million settlement with   Spirit Airlines .

Cirium fleets data show that three of Transat’s PW1100G-powered A321LRs are listed as in storage, which does not necessarily mean they are parked for engine repairs. It currently has 12 of the type in service.

Looking further ahead, the carrier’s long-haul network will get a boost when it starts taking delivery of the four Airbus A321XLRs it placed on long-term lease orders in September 2022. The extra-long range variant of the A321neo has range of 4,700nm (8,700km), according to Airbus.

Air Transat is waiting on the Airbus A321XLR to be certificated

Transat now expects the first of those jets to arrive in early 2026, Guerard says. “I think the whole industry is anticipating not to have deliveries of the XLR in 2025 [due to] several delays that are happening on the Airbus side.”

Guerard says her team is not concerned about operating GTF-powered aircraft in Africa’s hot and dusty climate – conditions that have reportedly posed problems for next-generation engines.

PARTNERING WITH PORTER

Starting in June, Air Transat plans to launch the first phase of its joint venture with fellow Canadian carrier Porter Airlines , which is based in Toronto.

The airlines intend to coordinate flight schedules and routes in an effort to expand their respective networks and do what many other airlines have attempted unsuccessfully – compete with Air Canada and WestJet .

“The coordination is going to take effect during the summer, basically connecting the domestic and transborder network of Porter with our European network,” she says. “Making sure there is a flow of passengers between those three networks is the first phase.”

Transat, which operates an outsized international network, has long sought an effective means to feed passengers from within Canada and the USA to its international flights.

The airlines will take another step in the fall, when they plan to start coordinating their respective networks in the USA. Air Transat and Porter have potential to become “extremely competitive against Air Canada”, Guerard says, but it will take 18-24 months of feeding one another’s networks to see the full benefits of the partnership.

Expedia said it would refund my tickets four years ago. Help!

Q. I need help getting a refund from Expedia. I booked two round-trip Air Transat tickets from Toronto to Paris through Expedia back in 2020. I had to cancel the flights, and, under the refund rules during the pandemic, Expedia said I could get my money back. Expedia said it would process the refund in a matter of weeks.

I waited a few months, but the refund never showed up on my credit card. I contacted Expedia in early 2022, and they told me to contact Air Transat for my refund. I did, and an Air Transat representative said the airline had already sent my refund to Expedia.

I’ve contacted both Expedia and Air Transat on numerous occasions since then, and I’ve also asked my credit card company for help. It says that there’s no record of a refund from Expedia or Air Transat.

I would love to get my refund. Can you help me?

KEITH DAWE, Toronto

A. Expedia should have refunded your money four years ago. I believe this is a new record for the longest airline refund case. (Congratulations, Expedia!)

Air Transat is a relatively small charter airline, so that might explain the initial delay. But at some point, Expedia should have taken ownership of this problem and helped you get a refund. Instead, it looks as if you bounced between Expedia, Air Transat, and your credit card company for years. Literally, years. You must be exhausted.

What happened? It looks as if Air Transat refunded part of your purchase with a check, which appears to only cover taxes and fees. This left an outstanding balance of about $1,002. Air Transat claims it sent the money to Expedia, but Expedia said it never received the money.

Here’s the thing: When you buy an airline ticket through an online travel agency, it is responsible for the refund. It doesn’t matter if the airline refunds it or not. So, if Expedia says that you’re entitled to a refund, and it promises to process a refund in a few weeks, it’s on Expedia.

You were way too patient with your airline and online agency. You should have received the promised refund promptly, and if you didn’t, you should have filed a credit card dispute to recover your funds.

I list the names, numbers, and email addresses of the Expedia executives on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org . A brief but firm email to one of them might have motivated Expedia to find your missing money.

I contacted Expedia on your behalf. In response, the company apologized and admitted that there was “an error with the refund.”

“The refund has been processed,” a representative said. Expedia also added $200 worth of points to your loyalty account as an apology for the delay.

Christopher Elliott is the founder of Elliott Advocacy ( elliottadvocacy.org ), a nonprofit organization that helps consumers solve their problems. Email him at [email protected] or get help by contacting him at elliottadvocacy.org/help .

Expedia said it would refund my tickets four years ago. Help!

In-flight catering during the Gate Gourmet strike

travel air transat

Airlines have temporarily adjusted food service on some flights

Food and beverage services on some flights to and from Toronto Pearson are being affected by a strike at in-flight catering firm Gate Gourmet. As a result, food and drink choices on some flights are currently more limited than usual.

All restaurants and retail outlets in the terminals are operating as normal; Gate Gourmet is an airline caterer, not a Toronto Pearson caterer. The airport has no direct role in the dispute but it is working to help minimize disruption to passengers – for example, by working with the airlines to mitigate related gate delays.

Here’s what you need to know about temporary changes to on-board catering:

What is Gate Gourmet?

It’s a multinational company and a major supplier of food and beverages to the airline industry globally. It operates an in-flight meal preparation facility at Toronto Pearson that is currently experiencing a labour disruption. Toronto Pearson is one of seven Canadian airports and 135 locations where Gate Gourmet does business worldwide.

Which flights are affected?

Gate Gourmet supplies catering services to several airlines, including Air Canada and WestJet. While all airlines have taken steps to minimize disruption, some adjustments to onboard services have been unavoidable.

To find out if your flight’s catering is affected, contact your airline’s customer services team. Your airline may also email you a few days before departure to advise you of the in-flight catering options.

What can I expect on the plane?

Air Canada has said that food choices on its North American flights will be limited, but packaged snacks and water will be available on all services. Customers in premium cabins can expect a light meal and more limited beverage service than usual. There is minimal impact to international flights.

WestJet has said that flights operating on its Boeing 737 jets could experience inconsistent food and beverage service. It has advised passengers to pack snacks and beverages or purchase them in the terminal. Service on its other flights should operate as normal.

Can I take larger beverages through security while the labour dispute is on?

No. Canadian government regulations only permit liquids in bottles of 100ml or less in carry-on baggage. You can bring an empty bottle and fill it at drinking fountain beyond security or purchase water and other beverages in the departures area.

What are Gate Gourmet and the airlines doing to minimize the impact of the strike?

Airline industry expected to soar with record summer travel.

travel bags and passport flight travel traveller

The airline industry is gearing up for what could be a record-breaking summer travel season, if forecasts turn out to be correct. Despite challenges such as the Boeing 737 MAX 9 grounding and aircraft delivery delays, airlines are reporting strong demand and growth, particularly in international markets. For investors, this could be a unique opportunity to gain exposure to a sector that’s poised for takeoff.

Not every carrier has reported results for the March quarter yet, but what I’ve seen has been encouraging. Delta Air Lines reported record quarterly revenue and expects continued strong momentum, targeting earnings of $6 to $7 per share and free cash flow of $3 to $4 billion for the full year. United Airlines, despite a pre-tax loss that’s largely attributed to the MAX 9 grounding, saw a $92 million improvement over the same quarter last year.

“Demand continued to be strong, and we see a record spring and summer travel season with our 11 highest sales says in our history all occurring this calendar year,” Delta CEO Ed Bastian said during the company’s earnings call.

Passenger Figures Off To A Record Start

The big takeaway is that the U.S. economy and air travel remain healthy, with airlines experiencing record numbers of travelers. Checkpoint volumes provided by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) are off to a record start in 2024, with carriers in the U.S. handling an average of 2.26 million passengers each day, a 5.6% increase over the same period in 2019.

Air passenger volumes exceeded pre-pandemic levels in the first quarter

WhatsApp Brand New iPhone Feature Just Launched That s Much Easier To Use

Apple’s iphone ai plans confirmed with new software upgrade, packers complete safety overhaul with georgia’s javon bullard.

This bodes well for the industry, as higher passenger volumes translate to increased revenue and potentially better margins.

International Travel Boom Despite Supply Constraints

International travel is driving the recovery, with U.S.-international air travel rising 15% year-over-year in the first three months of 2024, according to Airlines for America (A4A). This trend is also reflected in the latest data from Airports Council International (ACI), which shows that while domestic airport markets grew over 20% in 2023, international markets drove the recovery with a 36.5% growth rate.

The airline industry is not without its challenges. The global airline industry is facing a summer squeeze as travel demand is expected to surpass pre-pandemic levels while aircraft deliveries drop sharply due to production problems at Boeing and Airbus. Airlines are spending billions on repairs to keep flying older, less fuel-efficient jets and paying a premium to secure aircraft from lessors. This has led to increased costs and could potentially impact margins in the short term.

Why Airline Stocks Could Soar In The Coming Years

Nevertheless, I believe the long-term outlook for the airline industry remains positive. The shift toward hybrid work has created a new segment of travelers who have the time and money to spend on air travel. This trend, coupled with the pent-up demand for leisure travel, should help support the industry’s growth in the coming years.

Additionally, airlines have prioritized debt reduction, which should help improve their balance sheets and credit ratings over time. At the end of 2023, the domestic industry reported a collective $143 billion in debt, an approximately 15% decrease from 2021 levels.

U.S. airlines have prioritized debt reduction

As we head into the summer travel season, I believe now may be the time for investors to consider adding exposure to this sector. With a long-term outlook and a diversified approach, investors can potentially benefit from the industry’s recovery and growth in the coming years.
