The bag is made from micro-weave nylon with good dirt, water, and abrasion resistance. It’s worth noting that underseat bags don’t often feature spinner wheels, so this is a very convenient inclusion.

There’s also a luggage strap in the back, in case you’re traveling with a larger suitcase and you want to mount this bag on top of it. The Rhapsody underseater features a spacious main compartment with a wide mouth opening, and you can fit quite a lot of items inside it.

In addition to the roomy packing compartment, this bag has multiple internal and external pockets for effortless organization. Samsonite Spinner Underseater with USB Port 15-inch

Samsonite Underseat Carry-On Spinner with USB Port, Purple, One Size

Samsonite is a safe bet with luggage, and mini suitcases are no exception. This underseat spinner measures 16.5” tall with wheels and handles, so it should fit under most airline seats. It’s got spinner wheels, a retractable wheel handle, and a smart travel sleeve in the back.

The mini suitcase boasts a roomy interior with multiple sleeves and pockets. There’s a dedicated laptop sleeve and a tablet sleeve, as well as several smaller pockets for easy organization.

The luggage features two external compartments – one in the front and one on the side. The front compartment is great for items you want to keep handy at the airport, while the side compartment connects to the USB port above it and it’s great for power bank storage.

Also, the USB port allows you to charge your phone on the go, which is extremely convenient for airport and in-flight usage.

Overall, the Samsonite spinner offers excellent performance and functionality for a good price. It’s one of the more affordable bags in this review, and if you don’t want to overspend on a mini suitcase, it’s certainly one of the top options.

Tumi Small Compact 4-Wheeled Suitcase 16-in

TUMI - Alpha Carry-On 4 Wheeled Laptop Compact Brief Briefcase - 15 Inch Computer Case for Men and Women - Black

Tumi’s underseat bag is the best option for people who prioritize having multiple pockets and compartments in their luggage. This mini suitcase features about a dozen different pockets, including a dedicated compartment for the telescopic wheel handle.

Tumi luggage is made from premium materials and the Compact suitcase is no exception. It’s manufactured from durable ballistic nylon with great abrasion and water resistance, for ultimate durability. The bag also has premium zippers and spinner wheels, as well as a sturdy and height-adjustable wheel handle.

The main compartment of the bag can be split in two, and it comes with a removable, padded divider. You can use the divider to store electronics and other important items or take it out completely to get more space inside the bag, which is more useful if you’re packing clothes.

This case also features an additional compartment in the front with a zippered pocket, as well as two pockets on the front of the bag. If you enjoy organizing your items and you like having a dedicated spot for all the most important possessions, this bag is unbeatable.

Additionally, Tumi includes a USB charging port on the Alpha mini suitcase. You’ll also get a Tumi name tag, plus the bag can be registered in their Tumi tracer system. The underseat bag doesn’t feature any built-in locks, but it does come with a TSA-compatible padlock.

  • Excellent organizational features
  • Telescopic wheel handle with a dedicated compartment
  • TSA-friendly padlock included
  • Quite heavy

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Carry-On Rolling Underseat Bag 15-inch

Travelpro Luggage Maxlite 5 Softside Lightweight Rolling Underseat Compact Carry on Upright 2 Wheel Bag, Men and Women, Ensign Blue, 15-Inch

Travelpro is a popular mid-range luggage brand with excellent options in many different shapes and sizes. This brand is a favorite of frequent flyers and airline professionals, so they’re a good choice if you want a reliable and durable suitcase.

The Maxlite underseat carry-on is made from polyester with a DuraGuard coating, for excellent resistance to stains and water. The luggage features recessed in-line skate wheels, which aren’t as convenient as spinner wheels, but allow the luggage to be smaller in dimension.

The Travelpro bag also has a telescopic wheel handle that locks in multiple height positions and features its own storage compartment. It even has two feet so it can stand upright on its own, and a grab handle at the bottom of the case.

The interior of the Maxlite 5 underseat bag is quite spacious with a padded sleeve for electronics and a removable toiletry bag. The toiletry case includes a hanger for easy packing and storage, and it’s an excellent addition to this mini suitcase.

Other features of this mini luggage include a zippered pocket on the side, another pocket in the front, a trolley sleeve in the back, and a name tag.

  • Lightweight
  • Removable toiletry bag
  • Padded laptop and tablet sleeve
  • Recessed wheels
  • No spinner wheels
  • No charging port
  • Dimensions: 17.5” x 14.5” x 8.5”
  • Weight: 5.5 lbs
  • Capacity: 26 liters

Rimowa Original Compact 16-inch

Rimowa Original Compact is a 16” suitcase made from durable aluminum. It’s possibly the best option for travelers who want a small suitcase that can easily work for short trips of up to three days. With a capacity of almost 29 liters and a height that doesn’t exceed 16”, this is one of the best underseat suitcases you can get your hands on.

But it’s very pricey, and it’s certainly not a piece of luggage that everyone can easily afford. Rimowa is a luxury luggage brand and their prices often sport four digits, so you can just skip this luggage if you’re not looking to spend a small fortune on a mini suitcase.

The aluminum construction means that this bag is virtually indestructible. The case also features double-spinner wheels for smooth and silent movement, a TSA-friendly lock, and a telescopic wheel handle that can be locked at any height. Rimowa’s wheel handles usually feature stageless adjustment, which is a premium feature unique to this brand.

The interior of this mini suitcase features three packing compartments. Two are classic packing compartments with zippered dividers, and the third is a padded compartment in between the other two, which will work perfectly for any electronics. This compartment is also the most easily accessible when you first open the luggage, so it’s great for items you want to keep handy.

  • Very durable
  • Stageless handle adjustment
  • Three internal compartments
  • TSA-approved lock
  • Dimensions: 16” x 16.34” x 9.06”
  • Weight: 9.48 lbs
  • Capacity: 28.8 liters

Hanke 14 Inch Underseat Carry On luggage

Hanke 14 Inch Underseat Carry On Luggage with Wheels Hard Shell Suitcases Carry On Bag Lightweight Small Mini Suitcase Tsa Luggage for Travel(Cuba Sand)

The Hanke underseat luggage is an excellent budget option. If you’re not looking for a premium mini suitcase, this luggage will work perfectly. The bag is small enough that it will fit under airplane seats on most airlines, except for a few budget ones. At the same time, the luggage has a capacity of 23 liters, which is enough for trips up to three days.

This mini luggage features double spinner wheels and a height-adjustable wheel handle for easy maneuvering. The shell of the case is made from pure polycarbonate, for excellent durability and flexibility. Polycarbonate is the best material for hardside luggage, so you can expect great performance and impact resistance from this case.

The Hanke bag features zippered closure with a TSA-friendly lock to secure it. The wheel handle is height adjustable, and the double spinner wheels are smooth and silent.

The interior of this luggage is similar to that of much larger suitcases. The top compartment features a full-panel zippered divider, while the bottom compartment has a pair of tie-down straps to keep the clothes in place. There’s an extra zippered pocket on the divider, but that’s it for internal pockets, which is probably the biggest downside of this underseat luggage.

  • Height adjustable wheel handle
  • Polycarbonate construction
  • Very few internal pockets
  • No sleeves for electronics
  • Dimensions: 12.4” x 8.46” x 15.59”
  • Weight: 6.1 lbs
  • Capacity: 23 liters

Verage Carry-On Underseat Luggage 14” Compact

Verage Carry On Underseat Luggage with Wheels & USB Port, Wheeled Spinner Bag Carry-on Luggages for Airlines, Lightweight Suitcase Men Women, Pilots and Crew (14-Inch Compact)

The Verage mini suitcase is a great option if you’re looking for soft-shell underseat luggage with a fair price point. This is an inexpensive 14” suitcase that measures 17” with wheels and handles, so it should still fit under the seat on most airplanes.

The packing case is only about 14”, but the extra height is due to the smooth double-spinner wheels that allow you to maneuver this luggage in any direction. It’s certainly a convenient feature for getting around the airport, but the spinner wheels add quite a bit of height to this bag.

This underseat bag also features a telescopic wheel handle, a trolley sleeve, and a built-in USB port. It weighs only 4.5 lbs, which is an impressive weight for luggage this size.

Additionally, the Verage mini suitcase has lots of pockets and separate compartments, making it great for people who like to be organized. It has a padded laptop sleeve in the front compartment, a power bank pocket on the side, and a roomy main compartment with compression straps. The bag even has an extra quick-access pocket, which is great for storing your passport and boarding pass.

This underseat luggage is available in five sizes, and it comes with a three-year warranty. Overall, it’s one of the best options for people who are looking to buy affordable mini luggage.

  • Affordably priced
  • Multiple pockets and compartments
  • USB port for charging
  • Extremely lightweight
  • Quite tall at 17”
  • Dimensions: 17” x 13” x 7.5”
  • Weight: 4.5 lbs
  • Capacity: 24 liters

Somago Carry-On Luggage 18-Inch Hardside Spinner Lightweight Suitcase

Somago Carry-On Luggage 18-Inch Hardside Spinner Lightweight Suitcase with TSA Lock (Lime Green)

The Somago 18” suitcase is a great choice if you want small-factor carry-on luggage. This case measures 17.3” tall with wheels and handles so it’s not the ideal size for a carry-on case, but at the same time, it’s the perfect size for a suitcase for three-day trips.

It’s got smooth double spinner wheels, a wide wheel handle that doesn’t take away from the packing capacity, and two TSA-approved locks. It’s possible to lock the wheel handle in multiple heights, for easy adjustments. The body of the case is made from polycarbonate and it boasts zipperless closure, for ultimate security.

The suitcase features two packing compartments with tie-down straps in the bottom and an adjustable divider in the top compartment. The adjustable divider doubles as an organizer panel, with sleeves for a laptop, tablet, phone, and other necessities.

You can get this luggage in four different colors, with beautiful pastel blue and green as options in addition to classic black and white. Overall, it’s a really good polycarbonate suitcase that can be great for short trips, but it’s not the ideal option if you’re specifically looking for an underseat bag.

  • Zipperless closure with TSA locks
  • Wide wheel handle
  • Spacious interior with organizer panel
  • Too big to be a universal underseater
  • Dimensions: 15” x 8.7” x 17.3”
  • Weight: 7.3 lbs
  • Capacity: 29 liters

Rockland Melrose Upright Wheeled Underseater Luggage 15”

Rockland Melrose Upright Wheeled Underseater Luggage, Red, Carry-On 15-Inch

Rockland Melrose mini suitcase is an excellent option if you’re on a tighter budget. This affordable bag measures just 15” tall with wheels and handles, which makes it an excellent universal underseater. It will be accepted as a personal item on most flights, and it’s spacious enough that you can use it as your only piece of luggage on shorter trips.

The Melrose luggage features in-line skate wheels and two feet at the bottom, which allow the bag to stand upright. The in-line wheels mean you can only drag the case behind you, but they are low-profile and don’t add a lot of height to the bag.

The telescopic wheel handle is standard and it stores in its own compartment. As for the packing capacity of this luggage, it’s pretty much a basic underseat bag. That means that you get a single packing compartment with a detachable half-panel divider, and a few convenient pockets inside.

There’s also a waterproof pocket in this bag, which is great for toiletries or clothes that aren’t totally dry. The Melrose bag had two additional zippered pockets in the front, as well as two stretchy open pockets on the sides, that are great for bulkier items like water bottles and umbrellas.

  • Very affordable
  • Waterproof pocket
  • Multiple external pockets
  • Dimensions: 9" x 14" x 15"
  • Weight: 5 lbs

Mixi Carry-On 18” Hardside Luggage

mixi Carry On Luggage, 18'' Suitcases with Spinner Wheels, Rolling Travel Suitcase with Front Laptop Pocket Luggage Aluminum Frame PC Hardside with TSA Lock and Cover, Avocado Green

The Mixi carry-on luggage is possibly my favorite option out of the bunch. If you’re not looking for an underseat bag and you just want a mini suitcase that can fit in the overhead bins on airplanes, this is an excellent option.

This luggage boasts a capacity of 41 liters, which is absolutely impressive for its size. It’s made from durable polycarbonate, and it features a spacious packing compartment, as well as an extra zippered compartment in the front. That front compartment has a laptop sleeve, a tablet sleeve, and a few other small pockets, so it’s perfect for items you want to keep easily accessible, and it doubles as an easy access point for the main compartment.

You can secure the organizer panel to the top cover so that the items stay in place if you need to access something from the main compartment. But this type of opening is very secure and it allows you to utilize the space inside the luggage very easily.

The packing compartment has elastic cross straps to secure the clothes in place. This mini suitcase also features a TSA-approved lock, double spinner wheels, and a telescopic wheel handle.

  • TSA-friendly lock
  • Organizer panel
  • Spacious packing compartment
  • No trolley sleeve
  • Too big to be an underseat bag
  • Dimensions: 18.9” x 16.14” x 9.45”
  • Weight: 8.27 lbs
  • Capacity: 41 liters

What To Look For

Sizing and dimensions.

If you’re specifically looking for an underseat bag, make sure to check the dimensions of any luggage you like and compare it to the personal item requirements of the airlines you usually fly with.

While most mini suitcases featured in this review function as underseat items, some are too big to pass as personal items and you won’t be able to take them in addition to a standard carry-on suitcase.

First, consider if you prefer a softshell or hardshell underseat bag. Softsides are generally a good option if you like having multiple pockets, and if you want to use that bag in addition to a bigger suitcase. Polyester and nylon are both used in the construction of softshell mini suitcases; both materials are good and feature great water and abrasion resistance.

Hardside mini luggage is the better option if you want a proper small-factor suitcase that you can use as your only piece of luggage. Hardsides usually have a larger capacity and multiple packing compartments, but they often lack external pockets. The best materials for hardside luggage are aluminum and polycarbonate, and they’re both featured in the reviewed mini bags.

The mini luggage featured here ranges in price from some $60 to $1,400+, so I think I’ve covered everyone’s budgets with these bags. It’s important that you find a bag you can afford, so be sure to check out the exact prices of all the luggage featured here.

If you’re willing to spend up to $200, you’ll have a sea of options. There are also plenty of amazing bags you can get for around $100; they will perform exceptionally well, and they usually come with a really good warranty. The more expensive options are made by luxury luggage brands, and they’re a good option only for people who want a premium option and don’t really care about the price.

Best Mini Suitcase: Our Top Picks

If you still can’t decide on just one of these mini suitcases, go with one of my top three picks depending on the main features you’re looking for in the luggage.

The Samsonite mini suitcase is the best option if you want a soft-shell bag. It’s got all the features you could need from an underseat bag, and it’s one of the most affordable options in this review. Samsonite always offers excellent quality and performance, and when they also introduce a fair price into that equation, it’s extremely hard to ignore their bags.

  • FITS UNDER MOST AIRLINE SEATS for easy access to belongings en route, please check with your airline for more information as under seat storage capacities and Dimensions can vary.Number of wheels:4
  • Four, Multi Directional Spinner Wheels allow for 360 rolling in Multiple directions for easy mobility

The Rimowa Compact is possibly the best option if you want a durable, hardside mini suitcase. It’s made from aluminum so it is exceptionally sturdy, plus it features TSA-locks, spinner wheels, and a stageless wheel handle. This case also has three packing compartments, for effortless organization, but it is the most expensive mini suitcase you could buy.

The Mixi 18″ Carry-On is excellent if you’re not looking for an underseat bag, but just a small carry-on suitcase. It’s got a huge capacity, a unique opening style, and a padded organizer panel that you can easily access. The luggage is also equipped with spinner wheels, a TSA lock, and a retractable wheel handle.

  • 【FRONT LAPTOP COMPARTMENT】Front pocket innovative design can safely store and easily access tablets, magazines and more. Separate your electronics from clothing(Suggested laptop size 15.6 inches and under). Integrated deep compartment with functional elastic cross straps for securing packaged clothing.
  • 【HIGH QUALITY ACCESSORIES】YKK brand zipper designed for long term use and prevents burst open; American SJ Turbo brand new design silent spinner wheels; aluminum alloy telescoping handle has 4 different height adjustments for effortless mobility; TSA combination lock for multi-country transit, provides excellent security throughout all your travels.

When it comes to luggage , travelers are generally either team hardshell or team soft-sided. While both have their perks, soft-sided suitcases rarely get the praise that they deserve. If you’re in the market for a new piece of luggage, you may want to consider a soft-sided suitcase for flexibility and durability while traversing airport terminals, narrow cobblestone streets in Europe , and beyond.

When shopping for soft-sided luggage, you'll want to consider the materials each piece is made with, the overall design—including the wheels and zippers—and the capacity that the bag can hold. We've done most of the legwork for you, though, testing out a range of popular soft-sided suitcases to bring you a list of 10 excellent options.

This article is part of Condé Nast Traveler' s first-ever Luggage Week , for which dozens of suitcases, backpacks, and weekender bags were road-tested by our editors.

What is the best material for soft-sided luggage?

According to Consumer Reports , soft-sided luggage is often made from woven nylon, but each nylon style has its pros and cons. Cordura has more texture and can hide scuff marks and abrasions better. Ballistic nylon has a smoother texture, but can show wear and tear faster, though the slight imperfections won’t compromise the overall strength and durability of the fabric.

Is soft-sided luggage better than hard-sided?

This depends on personal preference and how you travel. Soft-sided luggage can be ideal because of the ample amount of exterior pockets that hard-shell suitcases typically don’t have. The flexible fabric can also be maneuvered into small overhead bins or car trunks easily.

Is soft-sided luggage durable?

In most instances, soft-sided luggage is extremely durable. Be sure to look for a suitcase that uses high-strength nylon and has strong zippers to ensure that your suitcase doesn’t rip as it’s tossed around by baggage handlers at the airport.

The best soft-sided luggage:

travel basic harriet small suitcase

Dimensions: 23" x 16" x 10" Capacity: 52L Weight: 8 lbs.

Pros: Compression straps, removable packing cube Cons: Wheels can glide too easily allowing the suitcase to roll away

After using it on a weeklong trip to Boston and Connecticut, senior commerce editor Madison Flager was impressed with this soft-sided expandable suitcase from Travelpro. It features one main compartment that has compression straps to keep all of your clothes and valuables secure while traveling. There is also a built-in and removable packing cube that can act as a second compartment if needed. "I like the included packing cube, and that they have other accessories you can swap in to suit your needs. I’m personally eyeing the Zip-in All-In-One Organizer to add smaller pockets for undergarments and socks," says Flager. It’s a great starter soft-sided piece for those who want to swap from a hard-sided suitcase and tend to overpack.

Dimensions: 31" x 22" x 13" Capacity: 126L Weight: 17.9 lbs.

Pros: Smooth wheels and zippers, includes a garment bag Cons: 18 pounds on its own, it can be heavy to lift, plain exterior can be hard to spot on a luggage carousel

If you’re willing to splurge on a soft-sided suitcase, the Tumi Extended Trip Packing Case may be the right fit for you. Research director Alexandra Sanidad loves this suitcase for its smooth wheels and zippers, the overall capacity, and the zippered pouches to keep items separate. With its hefty price tag, Sanidad admits it is a luxury suitcase, but the inclusions of a garment bag, a zip extension, compression straps, and a TSA-approved combination lock all make this piece stand out. Thanks to its large capacity, Sanidad says you could easily pack this suitcase with everything you would need for a month. "We packed as much as we could up to the 50 pounds per bag limit, but you can definitely fit more if you're driving around with this or on a vehicle with no weight limit," she says.

travel basic harriet small suitcase

Dimensions: 22" x 16" x 9" Capacity: 42 liters Weight: 11.1 lbs.

Pros: Large capacity for a week's worth of clothes, included garment sleeve, easy to clean Cons: Heavy before packing, its size can be confused for a checked bag

Travelers looking for a piece of luggage that will look as good as new for years should try out the Tumi Alpha Continental Dual Access carry-on. Former Traveler editor Alex Erdekian has used this carry-on for trips all over the world, including Italy, France, Mexico, and Boston. The bag can fit a week's worth of clothes and has a zip divider, plus a large mesh zip pocket and a garment sleeve to keep all of your outfits organized. And if the suitcase gets scuffed, it’s easy to clean with a paper towel. While she appreciated how much the Tumi carry-on can fit, Erdekian noted she had to check this bag at the airport on two separate occasions because it appeared to be too big for some airline’s carry-on requirements. At just over 11 pounds while empty, it is on the heavier end, and Erdekian found it could be hard to lift into the overhead bin once packed.

travel basic harriet small suitcase

Dimensions: 17" x 16" x 8" Capacity: 20L Weight: 5.97 lbs.

Pros: Neatly fits under an airline seat, protective cover for the handle Cons: Zippered pockets don't expand very far

If you’re on the hunt for a suitcase that’s both visually appealing and can hold a lot of clothes, the Delsey Paris Chatelet Air 2.0 underseater is a great option. This lightweight suitcase features a small protective cover that can be zipped over the suitcases’s handle to protect it while in transit. The underseater has two small interior pockets, one large interior zippered pocket, and one large exterior zippered pocket. It was tested by Paige Baker, who used it as a suitcase for her two-year-old daughter on a one-week trip to Jackson Hole, Teton National Park, and Yellowstone National Park, in which she had to account for a wide temperature range and varied activities (hiking, wedding events, etc.). “If you're looking to use this for a small child's suitcase or a weekend trip, it is an excellent size and very suitable,” Baker says. She did note that the compartments don't expand much, but found it helpful to “keep the packing minimal and straightforward.”

travel basic harriet small suitcase

Dimensions: 22" x 14" x 9" Capacity: 50L not expanded, 60L when expanded Weight: 9.06 lbs.

Pros: Large capacity, able to expand and collapse, cushioned top handle Cons: Only good for shorter trips

If you’re looking for more capacity out of a carry-on-sized suitcase, the Béis soft-sided collapsible roller is a great option. Flager recently used this bag on a four-day trip and had plenty of room for all of her necessities. One of the major pros to this suitcase is that it’s completely collapsible—so after you unpack at a hotel or home, it can lay flat to fit under a bed or in a closet until it’s needed again. The collapsible roller is stain-resistant and has an expandable zipper, which can be put to use from the get-go or to add room should you buy a few souvenirs on vacation. The outside of the bag has a laptop sleeve and a small pocket to store a portable charger. Another major perk is that the top handle has a soft hand cushion that Flager says is akin to a keyboard wrist rest.

travel basic harriet small suitcase

Dimensions: 14" x 9" x 22" Capacity: 51L Weight: 10 lbs.

Pros: Automatic expander, designated pocket for passport and tickets Cons: Overall look is a bit simple and industrial

Senior features editor Rebecca Misner says, "as a proud overpacker (I live by: you never know, might as well throw it on in ), I’m highly suspicious of carry-on suitcases for any trip longer than about two days or as anything other than overflow from my maxed out checked bag." When she tested out the Briggs & Riley Baseline Essential carry-on, she was able to fit everything she needed for a three-day trip, including running shoes and large evening dresses . One draw to this bag is that the expander isn’t zippered—instead, you press a button and then pull up on a lever so that the sides automatically expand. Another nice perk is the “SpeedThru” pocket, which holds passports and tickets, and has an orange lining so you know when it's open or closed. This bag’s sleek style is ideal for frequent business travelers. Bonus: It comes with a lifetime guarantee .

travel basic harriet small suitcase

Dimensions: 14" x 9" x 22" Capacity: 35L Weight: 7.16 lbs.

Pros: Affordable, can fit a week's worth of clothes Cons: Does scuff easily, needs more zipper access for pockets

The Thule Aion carry-on spinner is a well-made, affordable option that can carry a week’s worth of clothes. According to frequent traveler Patrick Thompson, the suitcase has a sleek look, with two useful outside pockets for storing smaller items like phones and chargers. The suitcase has straps that make it easy to pick up and place into cars or toss into an overhead bin. While traversing the globe to Italy, Argentina, Florida, and beyond, Thompson noticed that the bag does scuff easily, but loves its nutria (tan) color.

travel basic harriet small suitcase

Dimensions: 16" x 22" x 10" Capacity: 46L Weight: 9.9 lbs.

Pros: Keeps clothes looking neat, suitcase has a lifetime warranty Cons: Only has two wheels

If you’re traveling with special clothing items, for weddings or business trips, and want to keep the wrinkles to a minimum , pack the Travelpro rolling garment bag. Traveler's global associate director of audience development Lara Kramer has used this bag on a trip to Italy, Croatia, and Montenegro, and it held up well. "I was able to pack a few nice dresses and my husband fit an entire suit, all of which remained wrinkle-free, which was a game changer,” she says. The bag is made from high-density nylon with a duraguard coating, which keeps the suitcase looking new for years. It also comes with a lifetime limited warranty that covers the cost of repairs from airline damage. The one downfall some may see with this bag is that it only has two wheels, which can make it a bit more challenging to maneuver within crowded airports or city streets.

travel basic harriet small suitcase

Dimensions: 13" x 22" x 14" Capacity: 60L Weight: 4 lbs.

Pros: High capacity for a week's worth of clothes, wide color range Cons: Doesn't quite lay flat against your back when fully packed

Travelers searching for a soft-sided piece of luggage that also doubles as a backpack will love the Baboon to the Moon Go-Bag Big. Senior editor Megan Spurrell recently took this bag on a weeklong trip from New York City to Phoenix, Arizona, and Denver, Colorado. She says the bag is heavier than a backpacking backpack , but lighter than a rollaway carry-on, and can fit everything you need for a week with several outfit changes or a ski weekend when you’re packing thicker, heavier items. The wide color range makes this a fun option for those who are bored of basic black or navy, with bright options like bubblegum pink and melon green. This luggage is best for active travelers, but it’s not Spurrell’s first pick for comfort when it’s fully packed. “I had expected this to be a cool upgrade to my worn Gregory backpack , which I’ve used for everything from traveling around Southeast Asia for six months after college, to a multi-stop week in Kenya that included a few days on safari, a few at the beach, and a couple in Nairobi. While I could definitely pack for the second trip with this bag, it would be heavy to carry for extended periods of time,” Spurrell says.

travel basic harriet small suitcase

Dimensions: 15"x 29" x 15" Capacity: 88L Weight: 8.07 lbs.

Pros: Enough capacity for longer trips, sustainably made Cons: Only two wheels, no interior pockets, zipper can get stuck

Flager brought this duffel-style piece on a two-week trip to the Mediterranean where she was on an Oceania cruise , then went directly to Florida for a few days. While rolling a two-wheeled bag took a minute to adjust to, Flager loved its versatility: The large, main compartment can be used as a single compartment or be broken into two spaces, and she was able to get two weeks of clothes into the suitcase—and still had room to spare. “I preferred to keep the two parts separate, so that I could put shoes and dirty clothes in the smaller one,” Flager says. Another perk: the exterior fabric and the interior lining are made from recycled water bottles.

Packing for a trip can be stressful, especially if you’re trying to fit everything you need into a carry-on bag. With increasingly strict airline baggage allowances and common occurrences of lost/mishandled checked bags, finding the right carry-on suitcase is key to avoiding expensive checked baggage fees and ensuring your stuff makes it to your destination.

No one understands this struggle more than the SmarterTravel team. As travel editors, we travel a lot (and are firm carry-on only flyers.) We tested and reviewed the top carry-on luggage over hundreds of trips to help you find one perfectly suited for all your travels.

The carry-on bags we reviewed underwent rigorous testing to see how they held up to the realities of travel. We evaluated important factors like size and weight, wheeled performance, ease of packing, durability, and special features. Our testing process included packing each bag to capacity, carrying it through airports, stowing it in overhead bins, and taking it on planes, trains, and automobiles during real-world trips.

Ranging in price from affordable to splurge-worthy, the best carry-on suitcases earned top marks across all our tests for their optimal size, seamless maneuverability, handy organization, stylish looks, and resilience.

From a lightweight hard-sided spinner that fits easily in tiny overheads to a large carry-on that expands for over-packers, these are our travel editors’ picks for the best carry-on suitcases of 2024.

Best Carry-On Suitcase Overall: Samsonite Outline Pro Carry-On Suitcase

Outline Pro Carry-On Spinner

The Samsonite Outline Pro Carry-On Suitcase was our favorite of all the carry-on suitcases we tested. This smart and sleek suitcase is made from a durable polypropylene shell that helps contribute to its light weight of 6.4 lbs. Smooth spinner wheels and an adjustable handle make this bag easy to wheel even when fully packed.

The interior is just as nice, lined with a fabric made from 100 percent plastic bottles. There’s also a multi-functional panel divider that can compress clothes to create more space while providing pockets for organization. One of the pockets is water-resistant, so you can use it to separate swimsuits or wet clothing on the journey home.

Our favorite feature of the Samsonite Outline Pro is the antimicrobial handle technology used on the trolley grip and side handles, which helps keep us healthy while traveling.

Dimensions: 15” x 10” x 23”

Weight: 6.4 lbs

Best Large Carry-On Suitcase: Roam Large Carry-On Suitcase

Roam Large Carry-On Suitcase

If you want to test the limits of an airline’s carry-on policy, we recommend the Roam Large Carry-On Suitcase as the best large carry-on suitcase. We’ve taken this suitcase on hundreds of flights and have only ever had to check it on very small puddle-jumper planes. This roomy carry-on can hold up to 42 liters, making it a great suitcase for chronic overpackers.

This suitcase comes with two compression boards, which can be used to divide the two halves of the suitcase and help you fit even more in. The boards have large pockets perfect for packing cords and other small items.

We also love that all Roam luggage can be customized to suit your style—you can choose the color of every part of this suitcase, right down to the wheels, to create a unique bag that definitely won’t get mixed up at baggage claim.

Dimensions:  9” x 16.25” x 22”

Weight: 7.7 lbs

Best Expandable Carry-On Suitcase: Delsey Rempart Carry-On Suitcase

Limited Edition Carry-On Expandable Spinner

An expandable suitcase is like having two bags in one—keep it small and compact for a short trip or open it up for a longer journey (or for the return trip when you buy lots of souvenirs to bring home). Delsey’s Rempart Carry-On Suitcase is our favorite expandable bag due to its patented Securitech Zipper that’s three times more resistant than a standard zipper (so you don’t have to worry about it ripping open, even when it’s expanded to its maximum capacity).

Other thoughtful features include an integrated TSA-combination lock, two packing compartments with compression straps, zippered pockets, and a lined divider. We also love that the interior lining can be removed and washed—an innovation you’ll appreciate if you’ve ever come home with a sandy suitcase after a beach trip.

Three carrying handles allow this bag to be carried in various ways. If you have other Delsey suitcases, the Rempart’s modular design allows it to stack on top for easy carrying and storage.

Dimensions: 13.75” x 10.25” x 21.75”

Weight: 6.7 lbs

Best Soft-Sided Carry-On Suitcase: Travelpro Maxlite 5

Travelpro Maxlite 5

The best soft-sided carry-on suitcase is also one of the lightest weight options on our list. The Travelpro Maxlite 5 lives up to its name, weighing just 5.4 lbs. This model is the brand’s latest and is a full half-pound lighter than the previous iteration, the Travelpro Maxlite 5.

The suitcase has a unique tapered design that helps prevent it from tipping over when upright (a common problem with soft-sided suitcases). It also has a solid bottom tray design that helps increase the bag’s durability. The Travelpro Maxlite 5 can expand to 2 inches to provide extra space when needed. The interior is lined with a waterproof protectant that helps keep the bag dry.

This suitcase comes with Travelpro’s limited lifetime warranty, which will cover the cost of repairs if it’s damaged for one year after purchase.

Dimensions: 23” x 14.5” x 9”

Weight: 5.4 lbs

Best Luggage Trackers

Best Small Carry-On Suitcase: Eagle Creek Gear Warrior XE 4-Wheel Carry-On Luggage

Eagle Creek Gear Warrior XE 4-Wheel Carry-On Luggage

We love the Eagle Creek Gear Warrior XE 4-Wheel Carry-On because it’s deceptively spacious for its small size and light weight. It even expands slightly to give you a little bit of extra space when you need it. We’ve packed for week-long trips with just this bag and had no issues fitting everything in. Despite the diminutive size, this suitcase is packed with organizational features, like an exterior laptop sleeve and interior zippered pockets.

Made from 100 percent recycled, water-resistant fabric, this carry-on-sized spinner bag is easy to wipe clean and great for rainy destinations.

The Warrior is equipped with heavy-duty wheels that allow you to roll this bag over rough terrain—a perfect pick for navigating the cobblestone streets of Europe.

Dimensions: 21.65” x 14” x 10”

Weight: 8 lbs 12 oz

The Best Hardsided Carry-On Suitcase: Away The Carry-On

Away The Carry-On

Away’s The Carry-On Suitcase has won many awards and is beloved by travelers, and for good reason—it’s smartly designed. The Carry-On is Away’s smallest suitcase and will fit in most overhead compartments and pass all but the strictest baggage sizers at the gate.

This durable carry-on suitcase is crafted from 100 percent polycarbonate for maximum impact resistance. It glides smoothly on premium 360-degree spinner wheels and features a telescoping trolley handle with two height settings for ergonomic maneuvering. The water-resistant shell safeguards your belongings, while convenient features like the TSA-approved lock, laundry bag, and color-matched luggage tag help streamline your packing routine.

Thoughtfully designed, the suitcase maximizes storage with a double-buckle compression pad and extensive interior organization like three mesh pockets and a handy hanging pocket. Reverse coil zippers grant easy access to the wide opening, and an underside grab handle aids lifting.

As a bonus, Away’s carry-on suitcase comes in a variety of beautiful colors, including glossy and matte options.

Dimensions: 21.7″ x 14.4″ x 9″

Weight: 7.5 lbs

The Best Luxury Carry-On Suitcase: Tumi Continental Dual Access 4-Wheeled Carry-On

Tumi Continental Dual Access 4-Wheeled Carry-On

The Tumi Continental Dual Access 4-Wheeled Carry-On is an organized packer’s dream. The design of this suitcase keeps suits, shoes, clothes, and toiletries neatly separated and wrinkle-free. Convenient amenities like the built-in USB port and built-in TSA lock maximize functionality.

This is a great suitcase choice for business travelers, as the interior features a removable garment sleeve and fiberglass rod that allows you to hang a suit or dress inside the case without getting crushed or wrinkled.

The Continental Dual Access features Tumi’s signature smooth-rolling wheels and a 3-stage telescoping handle for easy maneuverability. Protective features like molded bumpers and side panels guard against impacts, while built-in tracers and TSA-approved locks keep valuables secured. With options for top, side, or bottom access via well-designed zippers, this suitcase optimizes packing efficiency for several days of travel.

Dimensions: 22.0″ X 16.0″ X 9.0″

Weight: 11.1 lbs

The Best Carry-On Backpack: L.L. Bean Approach Travel Pack

L.L. Bean Approach Travel Pack

A carry-on doesn’t have to be limited to a suitcase. For the ultimate in mobility, opt for a backpack as your carry-on. You won’t have to worry about climbing stairs or pulling a bag over rough sidewalks, and a backpack can fit under your seat on a full plane when necessary, avoiding the dreaded gate-check.

Our favorite carry-on backpack is the L.L. Bean Approach Travel Pack . Use it on its own for a short trip, or combine it with a checked bag (put all the essentials in the backpack and carry it on the plane) for longer journeys.

The Approach Travel Pack opens flat and can be packed like a suitcase, unlike a traditional backpack where you’ll have to shove everything in through the top and dig through the entire bag to find something buried at the bottom.

Dimensions: 20” x 12.5” x 10”

Weight: 3.3 lbs

5 Simple Ways to Make Travel Easier in 2024

How We Tested These Carry-Ons

These are the carry-on suitcases that the SmarterTravel team uses on their own trips. We’ve taken them on countless flights, train trips, road trips, and cruises to find out the pros and cons of each bag.

When testing a carry-on, we consider the following factors:

  • Size and weight
  • Ease of transportation
  • Organizational features

We’ve tested out numerous suitcases that didn’t make the cut, which helped us narrow the list to the best carry-ons worth investing in.

What Size is a Carry-On Suitcase

The dimensions for a carry-on suitcase vary by airline and generally change depending on if it’s an international or domestic flight. For flights within the United States, the most common size limit for a carry-on suitcase is 22 inches long, 14 inches wide, and 9 inches high.

The international carry-on suitcase size limit is usually 21.7 inches by 15.7 inches wide by 9 inches high, but this will vary by airline.

Note that airline carry-on size limits include all aspects of the suitcase, including the handles and the wheels, so be sure to check the total dimensions of your bag and not just the interior measurements. If your suitcase meets the size limit but the wheels don’t, it will not pass the carry-on sizer test.

Always check with your airline for the correct carry-on size for your trip, as it can change by destination.

Is There a Weight Limit for Carry-Ons?

There usually isn’t a weight limit for carry-ons on domestic flights within the United States (unless you’re flying on a very small plane). However, you must be able to lift the suitcase into the overhead bin without assistance.

International flights are generally stricter with weight limits and will weigh your carry-on bag when you check-in. These weight restrictions vary quite a bit by airline but generally range from 15 to 35 lbs.

What Can’t You Pack in a Carry-On Suitcase?

Remember, carry-on suitcases are subject to stricter security restrictions than checked bags. You can’t pack these items in carry-on suitcases, but you can pack them in your checked luggage:

  • Liquids or gels bigger than 3.4 ounces
  • Sharp objects (including knives, hiking poles, and large scissors)
  • Certain sporting goods (such as baseball bats and hockey sticks)
  • Self-defense items (including pepper spray and brass knuckles)
  • Weapons (including firearms)

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

Read Next: Things To Do on Socotra

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

Moscow itinerary

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

Random Russian guy

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I have always wanted to go to Russia, especially Moscow. These sights look absolutely beautiful to see and there is so much history there!

Agree! Moscow is a thousand-year-old city and there is definitely something for everyone.

Never been to Moscow or Russia but my family has. Many great spots and a lot of culture. Your itinerary sounds fantastic and covers a lot despite it is only a short period of time.

What was their favourite thing about Russia?

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

Perfect itinerary for spending a week in Moscow! So many places to visit and it looks like you had a wonderful time. I would love to climb that tower. The views I am sure must have been amazing!

I was lucky enough to see the skyline of Moscow from this TV Tower and it is definitely mind-blowing.

OMG I dream to visit Moscow someday! Hope the visa processing would be okay (and become more affordable) so I could pursue my dream trip!

Yup, visa processing is the major downside! Agree! Time and the money consuming process…
