Pre-departure checklist.

Before you travel to Australia, there are a few things you need to consider.

Use this check list to ensure you have a smooth journey on your way to Adelaide.

Check Australian Government requirements

Many travel requirements have now been removed or relaxed, though it is important to confirm the most up-to-date information directly on the following Australian government websites:

  • Department of Health –  International Travel and COVID-19
  • Study Australia:  Travel to Australia checklist
  • Study Adelaide:  Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
  • South Australian Government:  Travel to South Australia information
  • Other Australian states:  Information for international travellers

Make sure you hold a valid visa

You will need a valid, active visa to enter Australia.

For most international students, this will be a  student visa  . If you do not yet have a valid student visa, you will need to apply for a new visa before travelling to Australia.

Commencing students

If you are a commencing student, you will receive your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) when you accept your offer. You can then use your CoE to  apply for a student visa .

Please note  visa processing times  on the Department of Home Affairs' website and ensure that you will have enough time to apply for your student visa and travel to Australia prior to your program start date.

Continuing students

If you are a continuing student, you will need to obtain a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from the University that reflects the length of your program.

  • Check your visa status on the Department of Home Affairs'  Visa Verification Entitlement Online (VEVO)
  • If you need a new student visa, you may need to  apply for a new CoE
  • You can then use your CoE to  apply for a new student visa

Please note  visa processing times  on the Department of Home Affairs' website, and ensure that you have enough time to apply for your student visa and travel to Australia before your program start date.

Book your plane ticket

If you will be arriving for the start of the Semester or Trimester, ensure you book a plane ticket that will allow you to attend any Orientation sessions prior to the commencement of your program. You should also factor in any quarantine time you are required to undertake.

You can check Semester and Trimester dates on the  University Calendar .

Pack printed copies of important documents

When travelling to Australia, we recommend bringing printed copies of your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) and visa grant notice in your carry-on luggage. With these documents, you will be able to prove your enrolment and visa status if you are asked by Immigration officers at the airport.

Have any medical, dental, and optical check-ups

Most  Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)  policies do not include dental or optical services. As such, these services in Australia can be quite expensive, and so it's a good idea to get yourself checked before coming to Adelaide.

Pack your suitcase

Make sure you pack clothes for the time of year you're arriving.  Adelaide winters  are wet and cold (average daily maximum 16° Celsius, minimum 8° Celsius), while the  summers  are hot and dry (average daily maximum 28° Celsius, minimum 16° Celsius).

At Australian universities, there is no dress code. Most students wear casual clothes on campus; for example, jeans, t-shirts, shirts, sweaters, blouses, and sneakers. However, you may also want to pack some more formal clothes and any traditional cultural clothing for special events.

Electronics

If you're bringing your laptop and phone, remember your chargers! You should also bring any necessary travel adaptors and voltage converters for your electronics.  Australian power plugs  are likely different than your home country, and the voltage also may be higher. In Australia, the standard voltage is 230V, and the frequency is 50Hz.

Check Australian Government requirements (again)

When you're now ready to travel, it's a good idea to re-check the Australian Government travel requirements and conditions, as these details can change without notice:

Changes to temporary visa holder arrangements

Am I able to enrol in less than a full time load due to the effects of COVID-19?

Normal conditions for student visa holders apply, meaning you are required to complete your program within the duration of your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), which is best achieved by enrolling in a full-time load of 12 units per semester, or 9 units per trimester.

Exceptions to the requirement to enrol in a full-time study load are:

  • An approved  reduced study load  due to compassionate and compelling circumstances
  • An approved  Leave of Absence
  • Intervention strategy implemented by your Faculty or School as a result of Unsatisfactory Academic Progress
  • If you are still on track to complete your course by your CoE end date
  • If you are in your final semester and need fewer than 12 units to complete your course.

Note: an extension CoE can only be issued if you meet the  eligibility criteria  to extend your study duration. If you are facing compassionate and compelling circumstances to prevent you from studying a full-time load, you are required to apply to reduce your study load, please see the  online application form

Am I able to work more than 40 hours per fortnight?

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Australian government relaxed some student visa restrictions related to work. Please note that the  Department of Home Affairs has indicated  that the student visa work rights relaxation will finish on 30 June 2023. After that time, the number of hours a Student visa holder will be allowed to work will again be restricted

Where can I find more information about changes to student visa conditions based on COVID-19?

We recommend that you contact the Australian Government directly, or refer to their materials, for the most up-to-date and accurate information.

This will ensure you are protected by the ESOS framework and can travel to Australia when possible.

If I am studying offshore, do I need to apply for a new student visa prior to the expiry of my current student visa?

For information on applying for a new visa, visit the  Department of Home Affairs   website.

Booking.com is part of Booking Holdings Inc., the world leader in online travel and related services.

Verified reviews from real guests.

We have more than 70 million property reviews, all from real, verified guests .

How does it work?

It starts with a booking.

The only way to leave a review is to first make a booking. That's how we know our reviews come from real guests who have stayed at the property.

Followed by a trip

When guests stay at the property, they check out how quiet the room is, how friendly the staff is, and more.

And finally, a review

After their trip, guests tell us about their stay. We check for naughty words and verify the authenticity of all guest reviews before adding them to our site.

If you booked through us and want to leave a review, please sign in first.
