There’s no magic formula for choosing hats in general — if it feels good and looks good, you’re off to a good start. But when you add “travel-friendly” as a requirement, you’ve got to consider specific attributes, including:

On a serious note, please  do  choose hats that offer good sun protection. The folks at  SkinCancer.org say, “the best hats for sun protection have a brim of at least three inches to shade the face, scalp, neck, shoulders and upper back.”

Packability/Crushability

Once you take off your hat, it’s got to go somewhere… in a coat pocket, perhaps, or flattened and layered into your luggage. If you want it spring back into proper shape, look for products that advertise as ‘crushable’ or ‘packable.’ Wool felt performs well, as do many synthetics. However, straw is brittle and will crack or crumble, and cotton will wrinkle and crease.

Sad story: I took a spiffy fedora with me to Europe last year, but had to hastily jam it into my bag at one point. In Italy, it emerged crushed and never regained its former glory. Since then I’ve only traveled with caps that can take a beating and still look fresh.

You put a lot of effort and expense into planning the perfect trip, so don’t cheap out on that fashion statement sitting above your ears. Invest in one of these quality products that are sure to survive your globetrotting adventures. Go for it.

When you look good, you feel good. Spending a little extra on an accessory like a hat may seem superfluous, but in reality, can you put a price on self-confidence? Yes. Yes, you can. But most of these hats are affordable and can be the perfect accent for any travel outfit. Splurge a little, buddy!

We feel that this hat looks a little cheap, which isn’t the end of the world, but it will deter some users. However, over two dozen colorways are available at the time of writing, so you can find one that fits your vibe.

For the price and materials, this is one of the best travel hat models for winter adventures on a budget.

When we shoved it into a travel backpack, it came out on the other side of a few airplane rides without any noticeable creases. It’s crafted from paper, cotton, and polyester, which give it the unique straw-hat look without being super breakable.

That said, this isn’t the most durable hat on the market, so it’s best to try and keep it out of harm’s way. It doesn’t have a drawstring on the bottom to keep it from falling off, so it might not be the best choice for a windy day, though we found it fit pretty securely and stayed on well.

For those who are serious about sun protection, it’s essential to have a do-it-all model in your arsenal that can handle any trip. Here at Pack Hacker, that’s the Outdoor Research Helios Sun Hat. We don’t feel that it’s always the best travel hat for the job, but it does most things well, and we’ll explain how.

The materials are durable enough to handle the bumps and knocks of travel, from days fishing for trout on the river to afternoons at the beer garden in the city. However, the fabric is lightweight, so it won’t take up much room or weight inside your pack when you aren’t using it. Remember, it’ll rain in the desert every now and then! Because of the chosen materials (nylon and polyester), it’s easy to pack down.

As we mentioned earlier, this hat isn’t perfect for every trip. However, it has a use for most adventures, and that’s what counts!

Crushable Hats

You're crushing it! By far the most packable hats of the bunch, crushable hats are ideal for travel because you don’t have to worry about ruining their shape whether you throw them in a carry-on suitcase, handbag, or backpack. There might be some wrinkling or creasing depending on the material, but a well-made crushable hat will bounce back even after some serious wear and tear.

The fedora is a classic travel companion no matter where you're going. Not only does it add instant flair to any outfit for both men and women, but it's also foldable and easy to stash. Traveling to a tropical paradise? You can't go wrong with a straw fedora. Venturing to a winter wonderland? Don't leave home without a felt fedora.

Baseball Cap

The crushability factor of baseball hats is one of some debate. While many baseball caps have rigid bills (or cardboard bills if they're vintage) that should not be folded, there are plenty of soft, unstructured caps and styles such as this Stetson wool blend baseball cap that can withstand a little rough play. One of the important factors to consider is the material of the hat; cotton, wool, polyester, and other synthetic blends are generally more resilient.

Different hats protect you from the sun in different ways. While some hats are actually made with materials that block the sun’s harmful rays, other hats help shield you from the sun with their shape and design. These are the best hats to consider when traveling to sunny destinations.

Wide Brim Hat

The best sun hats have wide brims. This means hats with at least a three-inch brim to protect the face, ears, and neck. While wide brim hats come in various materials, those made from straw are ideally suited for warmer climates. Panama hats are a classic example of this lightweight and breathable style.

The key is to select a hat with a tightly knit weave that doesn't let any of the sun's harmful rays through. A good rule to remember: If you can see through the weave, leave. Most straw hats today are fairly sturdy and can be considered packable sun hats. To make sure, gently bend the rim of the hat to test it out. If it starts to crack or fray, be extra careful when traveling as it could get easily damaged.

Hat With UPF

Just as sunscreens offer SPF (sun protection factor) to shield skin against sunburn, clothes with UPF (ultraviolet protection factor ) block the sun's harmful UV rays, which could lead to skin cancer. This high UPF rating means that it blocks 97.5 percent or more of the sun's UV rays.

Also, look for hats with an adjustable chin strap — not only does this keep the hat in place to protect you while wearing it, but it also makes it easy to tie to your backpack or pocket when not in use.

I’ve been drawn to panama hats lately, and the masculine feel they give to my outfits. I already own a paper one for the summer, and I’m tempted to purchase a felt one similar to the one below. It would be great on a camping trip, and I’m considering bringing one to my next National Park vacation. Really anyplace where you are headed outdoors into nature, and even in cities with a laid back vibe. I would naturally pair the felt hat with a plaid shirt and denim.

Feather Fedora Hat

Everyone should own at least one fedora. It’s the go to hat for most travelers making them one of the best travel hat styles – it pairs well with almost anything. Straw for tropical destinations or felt for the winter, you can’t go wrong with a fedora. The feather embellishment on the one below is a nice change from a typical ribbon band, and taupe is the perfect neutral.

Striped Floppy Hat

A glamorous poolside hat is a must for any beach or resort vacation. This wide brim hat doesn’t just look great it’s also functional. Sun protection is so important and most people aren’t diligent about reapplying sunscreen. A wide brim hat will give you an extra layer to keep your face and skin protected.

A ladylike style that will add glamour to your ensemble. You can find them with bows, flowers, buckles, or feathers depending on your preference. Bring them on trips to stylish cities, especially in the winter to keep you warm and toasty.

Wool Baseball Cap

I’m a big fan of a flatcap to top off casual outfits. I own three and was so close to purchasing another on my recent trip to Ireland. They are easy to pack inside your packing cubes , and similar to the panama I like the masculine edge they add to my look. Look for chambray and cotton in the warmer months and plaid and tweed in the fall and winter. These definitely top our best travel hat list!

Beanies are a must for cold weather destinations. Ears get cold and you lose heat through your head. This striped version with pom would be a fun addition to your ski outfit. Lighter and open knit styles are good for sightseeing in warmer locales.

Even though they are great for travel, hats aren’t always the easiest to pack. Packable options are out there, but are not always in line with my needs and style preferences. Unstructured hats like the flatcap can easily be laid flat but a panama would be much more difficult. Most travelers solve this problem by wearing them when they travel. Others stuff the interior with items like socks or underwear and pad the crown with clothing.

I found a stall in the market of the MBK mall in Bangkok that sold natural cotton canvas hats in half a dozen styles. I bought a wide-brimmed one with a bow that has been wonderful for beach and sun travel. Because it’s all cotton I can pack it easily and clean off stains or marks, and I get lots of compliments. It keeps the sun out of my eyes, but doesn’t necessarily block the rays. I wish there were more posh, packable hats like this!

I also found a packable hat I absolutely love and still wear years later. I bought it on Khao San Rd 🙂

M&S have a lovely wool fedora hat – in black, navy and deep olive-green. I love ’em! M&S sale, here I come, haha! (Oh, and they’re about £30 each, by the way)

I have a cotton crocheted sunhat, with a wide brim that has a thin plastic rim inside to hold the shape of the brim, keeping it from being too floppy. It packs flat, since the crocheted crown just sort of compresses.

It comes with a little floral pin for embellishment, but I periodically change it to something from the countries we visit. A fake frangipani in Samoa, a madras flower in Antigua, things like that.

It goes with everything but winter clothes. For warmth, I have an alpaca beanie in my cold weather packing cube. Takes up less space than a pair of socks.

I just bought a big floppy sunhat too and it’s crushable, love it! Beanies and crochet style hats have always been a staple in my winter wardrobe. Hats are one accessory that completely changes a look.

I always wear a hat for day wear; but, for travel, my go to topper is a beige, packable Columbia Booney. It’s a sun-shielding/water-resisting wide brimmer with an adjustable toggle strap. I like the wide brim for UPF 50 sun protection and to keep the rain off my eyeglasses and face. I also like having the adjustable strap to keep the hat on my head in case of wind. When traveling, my hands are usually busy with luggage, camera, or totes so it’s is nice not having to worry about losing my hat in a sudden gust. If I’m indoors, I merely push it backward and it lays on my back with the strap hanging around my neck. I’m not apt to leave it behind like I’ve done with other hats. It’s functional, nice looking, and works well for me.

I also try to always pack a comfortable hat in the heat. It’s good to have that extra layer of protection between you and the sun!

Determine the best size and shape.

It’s important to consider how many hats you’ll want to pack before determining the best hat box for your purposes, as various options have different capacities. Measure your largest and widest hat to make sure it fits inside the selected case.

How you plan to carry your hat case is important as well. If you’re hoping to place it inside a checked suitcase, make sure to measure the hat box against your suitcase first to ensure it fits. If you plan to tote it separately as a carry-on or personal item, look for adjustable shoulder straps in a wide width for comfort.

Choose the proper material

Hardshell hat boxes will be the most protective, however, they also tend to be a heavier option. Why do you need a travel hat, anyway?

• If you’re  going someplace sunny , you’d be almost foolish not to take a hat.
• Not only will it shield your head, but a good hat  shades your face and neck . As a redhead whose skin turns puce all too often, I find a hat essential on my  travel packing list .
• A hat helps prevent sunburn and keeps harmful rays from your face (remember all those cancer warnings and wrinkle alerts?) It also helps  prevent heatstroke  by keeping you cooler.
• If you’re heading somewhere with mosquitoes, you can  wrap a net around it  or spray it with insecticide. Even on its own, a hat will keep creepy crawlies from dropping on your hair.
• If you’re heading to a  conservative country  or a particularly religious one, a hat will be useful in entering churches or covering your head whenever you need to.
• A hat is a  personal fashion statement  and can dress up the most boring outfit.
• Finally, if you take photographs and plan to  spend hours waiting outside  for the perfect shot, a hat should be part of your basic equipment.

How to choose the best travel hats for travel

Of course style is important. You don’t want to look too ridiculous (a little ridiculous is fine) or you’ll never wear it (unless, like me, you don’t care!)

A color that highlights your face and a shape that complements it are good starting points (I obviously do not heed my own advice).

Before rushing to buy your chapeau, ask yourself whether it is…

• Water repellant:  a soggy hat in the rain is no fun
• Quick drying  for when it does rain or you have to wash it
• Washable  of course, because it’s bound to get sweaty and dirty
• So it should be  unshrinkable  or it might be too small after you wash it
• Sprayable:  if you’re heading into a malaria zone, you should be able to spray it with a strong repellent (careful, a cheaply made hat could disintegrate if you use a powerful repellent so check first)
• Wrinkle-free , or as wrinkle-free as possible because it’ll get squished in your luggage and you don’t want it to look too crumpled
• It should  fit your head well  – too tight and you’ll get a headache (too loose and it will blow away)
• It  should breathe  and allow the air to circulate around your head to keep you cool and dry
• UV resistant:  increasingly manufacturers are adding this feature, making your hat even more sun repellent
• Broad enough for the  brim  to properly protect your neck and face from the sun – and that’s the main difference between a proper hat and a puny baseball cap
• A  darker color  under the brim is a good feature and considerably cuts back on glare
• A  hook or cord  to hold your hat on your head when it’s windy or to your bag when you’re not using it is essential (if you’re handy you can of course just make one yourself)

Packable travel hats: how to travel with your wide brim sun hat

If you’re a hat wearer and a traveler, this has happened to you: you unpack, gingerly unfurl your so-called foldable sun hat, and there it is, creased, crumpled and filled with lumps.

Yet there are ways to pack any ladies’ sun hat and keep it (and any other hat) from turning into a mess.

• The best way is to pack your hat upside down on top of something soft, stuff clothes around the crown, and fill the crown with more soft clothes such as underwear. This keeps its shape and prevents any hat from denting, while providing useful packing space.
• A similar strategy is to do the same thing but keep the hat right-side up. Once it’s packed to the brim, turn it over and pack around the crown, with the crown facing upwards.
• One surefire way to prevent any damage to your hat is simply to… wear it.
• Place your hat into a tote bag with a few clothes around it and put it under the seat (not in the overhead compartment, where it’ll surely get crushed).
• Travel with a hat that crumples into a ball or rolls into a tube, like a cap or the Solid Wing model above.

As long as your hat is made of some sort of soft material, you should be able to pack it with minimal damage. Harder materials, like more brittle straws, or felt, won’t survive as well.

And remember – a hat is quite a personal item and you can dress it up any way you want. Wear a flower or pin on it, or tie a scarf around it for that nostalgic throwback to our hippie days.

The Maya Train Will Get You to All of Yucatán’s Best Spots. But Not Yet.

In December, the train began running on its first route through Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. On a five-day journey a few months later, the author encountered enthusiasm, and scheduling hiccups.

I stepped off the platform at the gleaming new Maxcanú train station, eager to see the magnificent Maya archaeological site of Uxmal. All I needed was a taxi to take me there, a trip of about 30 miles away.

There are no taxis, said the stationmaster, as we stood on the polished limestone floors of the high-ceilinged station, which was cool and breezy despite the brilliant late-morning sun outside. And I was the third person in two weeks to get off at Maxcanú expecting to reach Uxmal, he said.

I was midway through a five-day trip to explore the brand-new Maya Train and several of its destinations in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico . Designed to run 965 miles (1,554 kilometers) around a loop of 34 stations when completed, the train will whisk passengers in cool comfort through colonial cities, archaeological sites, splashy resorts and tropical forests.

Now I was stunned. Wrangling a taxi has never been a problem in Mexico. But the drivers gathered in the main square of Maxcanú offered only beat-up vans that hopscotch through small towns, where I might or might not find a taxi to Uxmal. The next van was leaving in 45 minutes.

Yucatán’s layers of history have long held me spellbound. During earlier car trips, I have clambered up deserted Maya temples and palaces, stepped into the cool naves of massive 16th-century churches and visited restored haciendas, testaments of the ostentation — and hardship — of the peninsula’s 19th-century plantation economy. Traveling by train, I thought, would allow me to steep myself in more of that history.

But as I found in Maxcanú, a train won’t necessarily get you to where you want to go.

During my February trip, I traveled on the only route then available, an east-west leg that opened in December and runs from Cancún to Mérida, and then south through the port city of Campeche to the Maya site of Palenque (a short route between Cancún and Playa del Carmen opened last month, with three trains a day). I encountered scheduling confusion, unfinished stations and a dearth of trains — just two operating daily each way between Cancún and Campeche, and only one to Palenque. Overnight sleepers and special dining trains seem years away.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador considers the Maya Train his showcase development project, and wants to inaugurate the rest of the train before he leaves office on October 1. Based on my experience, that goal seems elusive.

A $29-billion route through the jungle

I started my journey in Cancún, where in the pre-dawn gloom the station hovered like a glowing spaceship. An attendant scanned the ticket I had bought online and a half-dozen more pointed me toward my tourist-class car, which was about a quarter full. I planned to go to Campeche, about 300 miles away, stopping once each day. At 120 kilometers (about 75 miles) an hour, the train covers the route in about six hours, the same as a car. (When construction is complete, the train’s speed should increase to 160 kilometers an hour.)

The car’s wide windows looked out at a wall of low jungle. The blue-green seats were comfortable and there was ample space between the rows. I bought a very good cappuccino at the snack bar, but declined the plastic-wrapped sandwiches. The rest of the merchandise was fruit cups, milk boxes and junk food.

The train will ultimately cost much more than the $29 billion budgeted so far, and it’s not the first time ambitious planners have alighted on the region. Cancún was once a tiny fishing village, selected half a century ago as a tourist hub. Last year 10 million international tourists flew into its airport, more than the airports of Mexico City, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta combined.

But uncontrolled growth has stressed the Caribbean coast’s fragile environment. The Maya Train, scientists warn , will push those problems south, threatening the area’s water supply, its unique system of underground limestone caves and its vast nature reserves.

Mr. López Obrador has charged ahead, handing the train over to the military , and arguing that it will spread Cancún’s wealth and attract new visitors. Mexico received more than 42 million overseas tourists last year and they spent almost $31 billion .

Local governments see an opportunity. “The train will allow people to disperse throughout the peninsula,” said Michelle Fridman, the tourism secretary for Yucatán state, which promotes dozens of attractions far beyond highlights like Mérida and Chichén Itzá .

Now that the train is operating, transport companies will begin to connect stations with lesser-known sites nearby, she said.

It’s fair to ask whether the train is the most effective way to develop the peninsula’s tourism. Tour companies already run trips to many sites from major cities, which are well served by buses. Driving a rental car through most of the area is considered safe , according to U.S. State Department travel guidance .

Canceled trip.

It took two hours (and one time-zone change) to reach Valladolid, a colonial city of handsome streets and ancient churches, where I bought the rest of my tickets at the station. A tourist-class ticket from Cancún to Valladolid costs 472 pesos (around $28) for foreigners and 355 pesos (around $21) for Mexicans. First class, with wider seats, costs 755.50 pesos and 566.50 pesos, and discounts are available for older travelers and residents of the five states along the train’s route. (A first-class bus from downtown Cancún to Valladolid costs between 222 and 344 pesos, depending on the time of day, and takes half an hour longer.)

It was impossible to run the new Maya Train tracks into dense city centers and the Valladolid station, like the rest, was outside the urban core. A waiting bus took disembarking passengers downtown, a 15-minute ride for 35 pesos.

That day I toured Ek Balam , the site of a ninth-century Maya kingdom that is dominated by a 100-foot palace distinguished by a facade of carvings depicting winged warriors, stylized animal features and geometric patterns bordered by giant fangs. Admission to the site includes entry to the X-Canché cenote, one of thousands of limestone sinkholes that were sacred to the Maya.

Later that afternoon, I was wandering through the Museum of Ethnic Clothing, a private collection of traditional dress, embroidery and hats, when a WhatsApp message from the ticket office blinked on my phone. My train scheduled for the following day was canceled.

I decided to deal with the problem in the morning and enjoy the city. As I wandered past the antique shops and boutique hotels of the elegant Calzada de los Frailes, it was clear that Valladolid’s tourism, and the infrastructure to handle it, was well established. The Maya Train is simply an alternative way to reach a city that tourists discovered years ago.

‘We’re on the Tren Maya!’

In the morning, I found that my train had not been canceled, but the station for which I had a ticket, Tixkokob, was closed. I got off instead one stop earlier at Izamal, known for its ocher streets and the giant Franciscan convent of San Antonio de Padua, built atop the ruins of a pyramid.

During the 90-minute ride, I heard widespread enthusiasm among fellow travelers who expressed a willingness to give the train time to work out the kinks. “We’re an experiment,” said Oliva Escobedo Ochoa, 64, who was vacationing from her home in central Mexico.

Leticia Iliassich, 57, who is Mexican, was traveling with her Croatian husband along with relatives from Mexico and Croatia. They had initially been scheduled on an earlier train to Mérida that had been canceled. “We knew that it was a new project,” she said. “We don’t mind.”

The group had already sent a video to friends declaring, “We’re on the Tren Maya!”

At the Izamal station I hitched a 15-minute ride into the town center with a man who had asked me to take his photo alongside the train and his father. From there I negotiated a taxi to Hacienda San Lorenzo Aké, a working hacienda that still turns the fiber from an agave plant called henequén into coarse rope. Global demand for henequén, known as Yucatán’s “green gold,” brought fantastic wealth to the region in the mid-19th century, speckling the peninsula with more than 1,000 haciendas. ( Many are now sumptuous hotels.)

Where geometry, nature and the divine merge

It was during my third day that I found myself stuck in Maxcanú, after a 90-minute train ride from Izamal. The stationmaster, an army captain, offered me a ride to Uxmal, just as he had to the stranded tourists before me.

Eying Uxmal’s 4 p.m. final ticket sale, I accepted.

My situation made it clear just how distant the Maya Train’s promises are for tourists seeking to explore more of Yucatán. In time, that will change, said Ms. Fridman, the tourism secretary. “The idea is to have more hotels along the train line,” she said. “That will happen little by little.”

But Uxmal , among the most stunning of the Maya sites, made up for the inconvenience. Uxmal’s grand buildings are faced with intricate decorative masks as well as friezes in which geometry, nature and the divine merge. New plaques at each structure offer detailed information in English and Spanish, part of the government’s investment in improving displays at Maya sites for the train project.

Most tourists either take day trips by car or bus to Uxmal from Mérida or stay at one of three nearby hotels. As I finished dinner at my hotel, the dining room began to fill up: 47 Polish tourists had arrived.

Panama hats and a cramped van

My plan for the day was to go by taxi to Bécal, a town where Panama hats are woven in limestone caves to keep the fibers soft, and then pick up the afternoon train in nearby Calkiní for the port city of Campeche.

But I spent so much time watching the hat-making demonstration and then fitting my new hat and buying gifts that we set off with little time to reach the station. To my chagrin, I missed the train, the last one of the day.

On Calkiní’s central square, I found a van that was leaving for Campeche. Cost: 65 pesos. Time: about 1 hour and 20 minutes, similar to what I would have spent on the train. Of course, I was trapped in a cramped seat and had to listen to the driver’s choice of sentimental ballads, but I was dropped off in downtown Campeche, close to my hotel.

The next day, I toured the Museum of Maya Archaeology , an expertly curated collection that included haunting jade funeral masks, glyphs and delicate ceramic figures.

José Madrigal, 45, an engineer from Fremont, Calif., was trying to make Maya pottery interesting for his twin sons. The boys had just turned 5 and their birthday present had been a ride on the Maya Train. “They love trains,” Mr. Madrigal said. Then the family moved on, keeping up a brisk clip through the museum. They had another train to catch.

Should you take the train?

Yes, if you are traveling between larger stations. The train also offers a way to get to Palenque, which is harder to reach and has roads with security concerns. Travelers can stow bicycles on board.

To see train times, check the destinations on the website . You cannot buy tickets online more than a week in advance. But when you finally board, the ride is smooth — and the coffee is excellent.
