Bukit Lawang Travel Guide: Jungle Trekking To See Orangutans
Bukit Lawang jungle trekking with a guide in Indonesia is one of the best places to see the Sumatran Orangutan in the wild, and it’s pretty easy to do on a budget!
The small village of Bukit Lawang sits on the edge of the Gunung Leuser National Park, a big rainforest where you can see all kinds of animals, including tigers, rare birds & lizards, orangutans, and other monkeys.
Trekking packages are generally ethical and you’re almost guaranteed to see Sumatran Orangutans and other wildlife. We saw more than 20 orangutans and a bunch of rare animals in just a couple days of trekking!
This Bukit Lawang blog and guide will explain how to get there, what to do, where to stay, trekking prices, and everything else you need to know before you go! How To Get To Bukit Lawang
Bukit Lawang is located in North Sumatra, Indonesia, and it’s relatively easy to get there.
There’s no airport in Bukit Lawang, so the nearest international airport is in the city of Medan (KNO), which gets daily flights from places like Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Jakarta starting at $40 USD for a one way ticket. You can shop for flights to Medan at Skyscanner.
Bukit Lawang is a 3 hour drive from Medan city, although in heavy traffic it can take an extra hour or more. Your hotel in Lawang can arrange a driver to pick you up at the airport in Medan, or you can book a high-rated private driver to Bukit Lawang here .
A normal price for a transfer from Medan to Bukit Lawang (or vice versa) with a private driver is about 600k Rupiah ($42 USD), but may cost a little extra in heavy traffic.

Bukit Lawang Jungle Trekking
The rainforest has lots of great wildlife.
In two treks we saw orangutans, gibbons, thomas leaf monkeys, long tailed macaques, monitor lizards, giant ants, a spectacular banyan tree, and other jungle sights.
Inside the national park, you also have a possibility of seeing rare birds, Sumatran tigers, rhinos, elephants, sun bears, pig tailed macaques, vipers, cobras, kraits, and many other things.
This jungle is part of the Gunung Leuser National Park, and it houses some endangered animals, so there are a few rules they expect you to follow:
- Don’t enter the park without a guide. If you pay for a trekking package, you’ll have two guides with you at all times. Their job is to keep you safe in the jungle and give you info about the Sumatran Orangutan and other animals.
- Don’t enter the park without a permit. Your Bukit Lawang guide will handle this for you.
- Don’t go closer to wild animals than 10 meters. Sometimes the animals break this rule, though, and if you’re lucky they may come close to you!
- Don’t feed or touch wild animals. They can become dependent or catch diseases from us. This includes the Sumatran Orangutan.
- Don’t leave rubbish in the National Park. Self explanatory. Thankfully we didn’t see any trash in the jungle at all during our treks.
The trekking difficulty at Bukit Lawang is not too bad, but it’s harder than I expected.
This isn’t like Tangkoko or Tanjung Puting National Park , where you can walk on flat ground and burn minimal calories while enjoying the wildlife.
There are some steep hill sections at Lawang where your legs will get a big workout, and the ground can be muddy and nasty sometimes with thorns and leeches. The daytime humidity can also be crazy.
Don’t let this scare you away! It all adds to the experience. If you don’t think your fitness level is there, I’d recommend doing the 1 day trek instead of 2 days.
Creek crossing
Before dinner, we soaked in the creek to bathe and cool off after the jungle trek. It was a nice clearwater stream and exactly what we needed to beat the humidity.
The camp is very simple and consists of a small 2-person tent inside of a larger covered bamboo shack where the guides and cooks can stay.
When you wake up the next morning after your trek, your Bukit Lawang guide will give you the choice of walking back to town or rafting on inner-tubes. We decided not to do the rafting, but now I wish we had.
It gives you a great view of the jungle from the outside that you won’t get to see on foot!
The jungle day treks normally provide lunch, and for 2-day treks there’s also dinner at night and then breakfast the following morning.
The food we had on our treks was great. For lunch it was fried rice, egg, crackers, and fruit (banana, pineapple, and watermelon).
For dinner, we had some Indonesian dishes that included chicken curry and perkedel (potato cakes), fried fish & rice, and more veggies. Breakfast was like lunch, but with a choice of tea or coffee.
The trekking companies can cater to your diet if there’s anything specific you want (or don’t want). Just give them a heads up the day before you start.
This is not food. But it’s nice looking.
Sumatran Orangutan Facts
Of course, the main attraction at Bukit Lawang is the Sumatran Orangutan!
Orangutans live only in Indonesia and Malaysia (on the islands of Sumatra and Borneo), and Bukit Lawang is one of the best places to see Sumatran Orangutans in the wild. They’re gentle animals and very smart.
Orangutan is an old Indonesian word meaning ‘forest person’, and true to their name, these great apes spend most of their time in the trees, where they use their long flexible arms to find fruit and leaves.
Orangutan Conservation Status
The Sumatran Orangutan is critically endangered, and there are less than 15,000 left in the wild. This is because their habitats are being destroyed on a large scale to make way for palm oil plantations.
The total number of Sumatran Orangutans has decreased by 80% in the last 75 years, and sadly it’s expected to keep shrinking, with extinction on the horizon unless major changes are made in Indonesia and Malaysia.
Orangutans are a protected species in Indonesia, but government enforcement is weak even when the animals are killed illegally. Palm oil farming has taken priority because it brings more value to the economy.
Indonesia is still a relatively poor country, and that’s especially true in Sumatra where tourism isn’t a big player yet, so money speaks. And unfortunately that continues to motivate palm oil farming, illegal logging, the illegal wildlife trade, etc.
Hopefully the tourist money flowing into places like the Bukit Lawang orangutan sanctuary will help incentivize the proper protection of these animals so we can keep enjoying them in the future.
Bukit Lawang Trekking Prices & Length
Most tourists wanting to see the Sumatran Orangutan choose the 1 day trek ($60/pax) or 2 day trek ($100/pax). Bukit Lawang trekking prices are pretty similar across companies.
Treks of up to 7 days are available and you get to go deeper into the jungle like that, but I question how ethical it is, because critically endangered species like the Sumatran Tiger and Sumatran Rhino need all the space they can get.
Keep in mind, the Sumatran rainforests have already shrunk massively to make way for palm oil plantations (and due to illegal logging), and sadly that trend is continuing. There are less than 100 Sumatran Rhinos left in the wild.
Personally I think the 1 day trek at Bukit Lawang is the best bang for your buck, requires the least amount of work, and leaves the least ‘footprint’ on the ecosystem. That’s my opinion. We saw plenty of orangutans and other wildlife on the 1 day trek.

Best Bukit Lawang Jungle Trekking Tour
If you’re looking for a vetted tour company for seeing the Sumatran Orangutan, here’s a Bukit Lawang jungle trekking tour with Klook starting at $60 USD (850k IDR) for a 1 day trek or $100 for a 2 day trek.
This pretty closely mirrors the Bukit Lawang trekking prices we saw advertised in town, and it also includes hotel transfers (from Bukit Lawang or Medan), along with the national park permit fees, meals, and optional river tubing.
We’ve used Klook for lots of tours and activities around the world, and they’re great! Highly recommended.

Other Tips For Bukit Lawang
- ATM: From the town of Bukit Lawang, the nearest ATM is about 10 kilometers away, so make sure you bring enough cash. You can also pay things by bank transfer. Credit cards aren’t accepted.
- Hotels: Expect cold showers and fans only, no air conditioning. We were never hot at night. Electricity is stable, but sometimes there are short outages.
- WiFi: Most places only have limited WiFi in the lobby/restaurant area, or none at all.
- Cell Service: Telkomsel has good 3G/4G reception in the town. We used this for a hotspot at times when we couldn’t reach our hotel WiFi.
- Restaurants: Many hotels have in-house restaurants for their guests, although you can eat at one of the restaurants in town if you’d like. We ate all of our meals at our hotel, Thomas Retreat , which had great Western and Indonesian food at reasonable prices (also good WiFi).
- Safety: We spent months traveling as a couple in North Sumatra and overall it’s very safe. Just take normal precautions. If you’re a solo female traveler, you can ask about joining a trekking group with other tourists.
- Monkeys: There are lots of cheeky macaques that visit the town every day. Most of the time they are good entertainment, but remember to close your hotel windows at night and keep an eye on your belongings or they might make off with them!
- Mosquitoes: According to this Lancet study from 2018, Malaria is rare in this part of Sumatra. I’ve never heard of a tourist getting Malaria from mosquitoes in Bukit Lawang. However, it’s still a very good idea to sleep inside a mosquito net and wear repellant while out and about, just in case. Malaria can be nasty and dangerous.
- More Things To Do: There’s a bat cave near Bukit Lawang town that you can visit on a short trekking tour. However, the best day trips are to Batu Katak to see the rare giant flowers, or Tangkahan to see the elephant sanctuary. You can find more info on these places below.
More Things To Do Near Bukit Lawang
• batu katak: rafflesia & titan flower trekking.
Batu Katak is another small village on the east side of Gunung Leuser National Park where you can do flower trekking to see the giant Rafflesia and Titan Arum, two of the biggest flowers in the world!
This was one of the best highlights of our visit to North Sumatra. The Titan Arum flowers can grow to be 3 meters (10 feet) tall! There’s also several limestone water caves to see near Batu Katak, but I had an injured leg so we didn’t get to do the cave treks yet.
Batu Katak is 40 minutes south of the Bukit Lawang orangutan sanctuary. You can message Joe on WhatsApp ( ☎ +62 812-6340-3452 ) and he can arrange your pickup, trekking, and other info. He was a huge help for planning our trip.
• Tangkahan Elephant Sanctuary
The Tangkahan Elephant Sanctuary is a small settlement 2 hours north of Bukit Lawang where you can play with semi-wild Sumatran Elephants by the river!
Elephant tourism gets a bad rap nowadays, but these animals are critically endangered in Indonesia because their habitat is disappearing, and tourist money may be the only way to correct it. The elephants are well cared for, have lots of freedom of movement, and seemed very happy when we visited.
They have 9 rescued elephants ( a new baby was just born ) and you can pet them, feed them, and help bathe them in the river. It was a great experience!
It’s possible to visit Tangkahan on a day trip from Bukit Lawang, or if you want more time with the elephants there are some hotels in Tangkahan too.

When To Visit Bukit Lawang
Gunung Leuser National Park has a tropical rainforest climate that doesn’t follow the same weather patterns as the rest of Indonesia. You can find a monthly breakdown here .
I wouldn’t stress about when to visit. Every month is rainy at Bukit Lawang, because it’s a rainforest! The driest months are February, March, June, and July, but the rainfall is still much higher than places like Bali.
We went in December and the weather was good for trekking. The rain usually comes in the evenings or at night, and only lasts a few hours max.
Most tourists do their Bukit Lawang jungle trekking in June – August, and in the high season there are hundreds of them trekking per day. So if you want to avoid the crowds, pick a different month.
Happy travels!

After flying into Medan airport, our adventures officially began in the riverside village of Bukit Lawang. Gateway to the world heritage Gunung Leuser National Park , most visitors come here for one thing only… A chance of spotting orangutans in the wild.
Furthermore, the National Park is one of the richest tropical rainforests in Southeast Asia. As well as critically endangered orangutans, the region is habitat to an abundance of unique wildlife and plant species.
While the National Park is the highlight of Bukit Lawang, we also enjoyed the sleepy atmosphere of the village. Traditional and charming, it was a great introduction to Sumatran culture.
What to do in Bukit Lawang
1. bukit lawang orangutan trek.
It’s hard to believe that there are only 2 places in the world where you can find wild orangutans. First, is Borneo in Malaysia, and the other is here in Sumatra. Sadly, deforestation is having catastrophic consequences on the species. As a result, it is unclear how much longer they will survive in the wild.
On a positive note, there are some efforts being made to conserve the environment. That said, there are some questionable practices when it comes to orangutan spotting tours. This is why it is imperative that you do your research before booking a tour, to ensure the company encourages responsible tourism.
While there are a number of tour companies who claim to be eco-friendly, we can personally recommend Sumatra Orangutan Treks. As well as being educated and respectful regarding the environment, they in no way enticed the orangutans by feeding them. This is a common method among some guides but can be very destructive to the orangutans’ well-being.
*Female Travellers – There are some reports online of some tour guides acting inappropriately towards solo female travellers. This is another reason to do your research and go with a reputable company. if you are a female travelling alone, make it absolutely clear that you want to go on a group tour when making your booking.

2. River Rafting/Tubing
Other than the National Park, there is little else to do in Bukit Lawang. Therefore, rafting or tubing on the Bohorok River is a fun way to k!ll some time. How hair raising the experience is, will depend on the time of the year. During the dry season, the rapids along the river are minimal. While in the wet season they are known to get pretty intense. We were there in dry season and so it felt like a lazy river cruise.
*Tip – If you do an overnight jungle trek, most of the tour agencies will include this activity as part of the package.
3. Explore the Village
If you have the time, it is worth spending some time meandering the village itself. As well as its beautiful and peaceful nature, it’s not uncommon to encounter furry residents of the national park roaming around.
In addition to some cool caves and riverside restaurants, the local culture is quite fascinating. You can expect residents of the village to get super excited when they see a Bule (tourist). And you’ll be like a local celebrity with everybody wanting a picture with you.
*Tip – Be sure to check out the bat cave – Although, wear sensible shoes and take 20,000 RP for entrance & torch rental.
Another Tip – on route to the cave, you will walk past a children’s home. This is a private organisation founded in 2008 to help support local children. If you enjoy some food or a drink in their restaurant, the profits will go towards educational material for the children.
Getting to Bukit Lawang
The closest airport is Kualanamu Airport in Medan and from there you will need to travel the 136km to Bukit Lawang. Here are the transport options available:
PRIVATE CAR – Although this is the most expensive option at around 50 euro, you can have your hotel in Bukit Lawang organise a private car for you. The total journey time is 3 hours.
GRAB TAXI – Grab Taxi operates in the area and if you are able to find a driver the price to Bukit Lawang is around 30 euro. The total journey time is 3 hours.
LOCAL BUS – The local bus is your cheapest option to travel to Bukit Lawang. Below you can find the bus time table and prices or check tourist buses with 12go, Asia.

Batu Mandi Guesthouse – Although the rooms were very basic, the garden surroundings are beautiful and peaceful. Furthermore, if you are doing a jungle trek they will store your luggage for you. A great base for a night or 2.

Days 5-6: Lake Toba & Samosir Island
Formed by a supervolcanic eruption 70,000 years ago, Lake Toba is an extraordinary natural wonder of the world. At over 1,145 square km, and a depth of 450 meters, trying to fathom an eruption of this scale completely blows my mind.
That said, there is an imperturbable tranquillity to be found in this part of Sumatra. And located in the heart of the lake, Samosir Island is a wonderful place to spend a relaxing few days amidst your Sumatra Itinerary. In addition to the pristine scenery and serenity, we really enjoyed learning about the mysterious traditions of the local Batak Culture.
What to do on Samosir Island, Lake Toba
1. Visit an Authentic Batak Village
Visit the local villages of Tomok or Ambarita to learn more of Lake Toba’s extraordinary indigenous culture. Specifically, the Batak culture has a compelling history, involving stories of public beheadings and cannibalism. Furthermore, traditional Batak houses are truly unique and beautiful.
2. Take a Swim in the Lake
You can’t come to Lake Toba without taking a swim in the warm volcanic lake. That said, be sure to check with locals where it is safe before diving in. You will find a couple of establishments in the Tuk Tuk area have safe places to swim, including the German Bakery (who also serve some pretty nice cakes too)!
3. Rent a Scooter & Explore the Island
With captivating views aplenty, renting a scooter and driving the coastal road is a great way to spend the day. From Majestic waterfalls, lakes within lakes, and charming villages, there are so many wonders to be discovered here.

Getting to Lake Toba & Samosir Island
From Bukit Lawang: A small minivan of max. 7 people, leaves daily from Bukit Lawang at 8.30am to Parapat. Once you reach Parapat, you can take the ferry to Samosir Island. It is possible to organise the entire journey through a local tour company in Bukit Lawang. As a guideline, we paid 230,000 IDR/pax, including the cost of the ferry. The total journey time was approx. 10 hours.
From Medan Airport : Your best option from Medan Airport is to take a shared taxi to Parapat, followed by the ferry. Once you exit the airport, turn right and look out for a company called ‘Nice-Trans’. Here they offer a direct service to Parapat for around 100,000 IDR /pax. The journey time is approximately 5 hours.
Where to Stay on Samosir Island
Toba Village Inn – Located in the heart of Tuk Tuk, this beautiful property boasts an outdoor pool and incredible views over the lake.

*Tip – We recommend staying in the Tuk Tuk area, as this is where you can find the majority of restaurants and attractions.
Days 7-8: Berastagi
Berastagi is a small rural town, and one certainly not quite catered for tourists yet. Nonetheless, the surrounding area boasts some exciting adventure prospects. Here, you can climb to the summit of a volcano or encounter one of the tallest waterfalls in Asia. That said, we wouldn’t recommend hanging around any longer than you need to.
What to do in Berastagi
1. sipiso-piso waterfall.
At a height of 120m, Sipiso Piso is one of the tallest waterfalls in Indonesia. In fact, it is said to be one of the most powerful in all of South East Asia. Combine that with astonishing surrounding views, you have yourself a worthy contender for your Sumatra Itinerary.
The waterfall is an impressive natural wonder to see up close. While it’s breathtaking from above, we recommend braving the 1000 stair climb to experience the sheer force of its wrath.

2. Climb Gunung Sibayak
At a height of 2,056 metres, Gunung Sibayak is said to be one of the most accessible volcanoes in Indonesia. A manageable 2-3 hour climb will lead you to the summit, where a smouldering sulphur lake lay dormant.
During the morning is the best time to climb, and many choose to start the hike early to be there for sunrise. For more information, ask at your hotel to organise a tour guide & transportation for you.
3. Eat at Jabu Cafe
Serving western and Asian food with a twist, this trendy establishment felt more like we were in Bali than Sumatra. The portions were a little on the side small, but where the food lacked in size, it made up in quality. Furthermore, they also have a great coffee menu including an Avocado based Coffee and a Creme Brule latte!
Getting to Berastagi
From Medan Airport: Your best option is to take a shared taxi. Once you exit the airport, turn right and look out for a company called ‘Nice-Trans’. Here they offer a direct service to Berastagi. The journey time is approximately 3hrs.
From Lake Toba: You can take the ferry to Parapat followed by the tourist bus to Berastagi. As a guideline, we paid 15,000 IDR/pax for the ferry plus 150,000 IDR/pax for the bus and you can book in advance at Parapat pier. Alternatively, there are tour operators dotted around the island.
From Bukit Lawang: A tourist bus will cost approximately 170,000 IDR/pax. Organise with your hotel or local tour companies. Duration: 5-6hrs.

Backpacking West Sumatra Itinerary
West Sumatra is a little more challenging to travel than the North. Meaning other than an intrepid few, you’re unlikely to bump into many other tourists. This area of Sumatra is most commonly known for its world-class surf; however, you don’t need to be a pro surfer to enjoy what’s around. Unfortunately, we didn’t make it to the West on this trip; however, based on some research we have put together this West Sumatra Itinerary for your inspiration.
Days 9-11: Bukittinggi
Known for its stunning scenery and cultural traditions, Bukittinggi seems like a worthwhile addition to your Sumatra itinerary. In fact, there seems to be an endless list of things to do here. If you are a nature lover, you can hike volcanoes or chase waterfalls. At the same time, history buffs will enjoy the royal architecture and Japanese war tunnels.

Days 12-14: The Mentawai Islands
The Mentawai Islands have been described as the Bali of yester-years, with the archipelago boasting some of the best beaches in Indonesia. In particular, those in the know, come here to take advantage of the world-class surf conditions. While the surf beaches in Bali get busier each year, surfers here can enjoy quiet and flawless conditions.
Despite being the top attraction, you don’t have to be a surfer to enjoy the Mentawai Islands. First, the pristine waters are perfect for diving or snorkelling. Furthermore, some islands boast sweeping rainforest where you can go trekking. In short, there is something for everybody here in Paradise.

Additions to Backpacking Sumatra Itinerary
If you find yourself with more time in Sumatra, here are some other spots worth considering.
Aceh Province
While we have covered most places in the North, you may wish to consider the Aceh province as an addition to your backpacking Sumatra itinerary. Unfortunately, this area is most commonly known for a devastating Tsunami that took place in 2004; however, often overlooked is the beautiful nature and raw culture.
As well as museums and cultural sights, the surrounding islands boast pristine beaches with amazing marine life. Yet, the Aceh province remains rarely visited by tourists. Although we are guilty of not making it to Aceh ourselves on this occasion, it’s definitely on the list should we return?
Suggested Read: 15 Best Things to do in Aceh Province
If you’re all about the back to basics, remote island life, I would highly encourage you to consider Asu Island during your trip to Sumatra. Other than surfing and snorkelling, there’s not much else to do other than enjoy the pristine beaches. Sounds terrible right? This article by North Abroad sums up the island perfectly.
Nias Island
Sssssh – this is Indonesia’s best-kept secret. Well off the beaten track off the coast of North Sumatra, Nias Island is a location for the adventurous travellers. Expect 120km of unspoilt beaches, a unique and vibrant culture, as well as epic surfing opportunities.
The Best Time to go Backpacking in Sumatra
The best time to visit Sumatra is in the dry season (May to September). This way, you can enjoy all the outdoor activities the island has to offer. The wet season starts in September and progresses through to around February time. It’s recommended to avoid travelling during that time.
Sumatra Culture & Religion
With the primary religion in Sumatra being Muslim, the culture is very different to that you will find in Bali. That said, it is just as rich and vibrant.
In fact, the people of Sumatra are a diverse group of races and cultural groups. For example in the North, you have areas who implement Sharia Laws. While on Lake Toba, the Batak culture has its own belief centre altogether.
With this in mind, it’s important to be respectful of the local culture and traditions. Most importantly, it is common courtesy to dress conservatively, even on some beaches. Be sure to read, certain customs to be aware of that can avoid unintentional offence or disrespect.
Things to Know Before Backpacking Sumatra
- Pay close attention to the Sumatra culture and religion section above.
- WIFI is extremely difficult to find in the more rural areas of Sumatra . We made the rookie error of arriving without a SIM card and having no internet made planning our travels very difficult.
- It is near enough impossible to buy a tourist sim card in Sumatra unless you can find a local who will register it for you. The shops here do not offer the same services as in Bali or Lombok. The best option is to buy a sim card in Bali and check that it will cover you in Flores as well.
- In some areas, it is difficult to find anybody who speaks English . It is good to learn some local phrases but also have a translation app downloaded on your phone.
- Beware of the minority of locals who will give you incorrect information regarding bus timetables etc. They are usually looking to make money off of you themselves. Be clear on your route before setting off and always have an offline map handy .
What to Pack for Backpacking Sumatra
Unsure of what you might need to pack for your adventures in Sumatra? Don’t worry, we have got you covered. Check out our backpacker essentials, for a packing list of items that we carry with us on every adventure .
Here are some items that we recommend taking to make your visit to the jungles & waterfalls more comfortable:
- Comfortable shoes for the hikes
- Water shoes to wear in the water – We Recommend : 2 in 1 Water/Hiking Shoes .
- Waterproof Bag to protect valuables – We Recommend: Waterproof Dry Bag-10L/20L/30L
- Bathing suit & towel for the obvious – We Recommend: Microfiber Travel Towel
Travel Responsibly
As travellers, it should always be a top priority to travel responsibly. We already leave a substantial carbon footprint just by flying to our travel destinations, so that’s even more reason to make a positive impact when we get there. There are many small steps you can take to becoming a responsible traveller, and we highly encourage you to educate yourself before travelling to Sumatra. Here are some things you can do to minimise your footprint:
1. Do not leave any rubbish on the ground: You would think this would go without saying; however, there are some questionable humans who think it’s ok to throw trash on the ground.
2. Carry a Steripen or iodine tablets to sterilise water: This not only limits your usage of single-use plastic but also saves you money too!
3. Respect the local culture: Be courteous of the local culture and act in such a way that leaves a good impression. Learn a little of the local language (hello and thank you is the minimum), greet the locals in a polite manner, and respect dress codes & traditions.
Well, that concludes Our Backpacking Sumatra Itinerary and Travel Guide . If you have any questions or feel we have missed anything, please reach out to us in the comment section below.

Independent travel & culture guides to indonesia, a guide to gunung leuser national park.
July 26, 2018 Elliot Aceh & North Sumatra 10
The national park
Gunung Leuser is the second largest national park of Sumatra (after Kerinci Seblat) and definitely Indonesia’s most famous.
Started as a nature reserve of about 150’000ha in 1934, the protected area nowadays covers an area larger than 1’000’000ha. Most of it belongs to Aceh province but it overlaps with North Sumatra too.
This is the last known place on Earth where orangutans, tigers, rhinos and elephants coexist in the wild.
In 1998, an area known as the ‘Leuser Ecosystem’ 2 times larger than the national park has been recognized by the government who acknowledged that the park alone wasn’t sufficient to protect all the biodiversity of the area.
Getting in the park requires the purchase of a daily entry ticket. Price is 150’000Rp per day for foreigner and 5’000Rp for locals. On weekends and national holidays, the tarif is supposed to increase to 225’000Rp/7’500Rp but it doesn’t seem to be enforced.
Tickets can be obtained through your guesthouse, insist to get an official ticket from the park in return (it must bear a visitor number on it).
Leuser’s wildlife
The park is home to 350 birds species, 194 reptile species and 129 types of mamals. Still, orangutans are the main draw here. Males, especially flanged one are scarcer, which is logical given they occupy a much larger territory than females.
Don’t get hyped on tigers and rhinos, both are elusive species mostly seen by camera traps. The situation of the Sumatran rhino is especially dire.
A visit to Gunung Leuser National Park would be very judicially organized when the trees are full of fruits.
The most reliable period is between December and January but November and February are not bad either. Groups of several (up to 10) orangutans are often reported feasting on fruiting ficus trees at this time for instance.
Visiting from Ketambe
The patch of forest opened to tourism is located on the eastern bank of the river. The western bank of the river is closed to visitors and fully dedicated to research. Unfortunately, the conditions of the forest on the West bank is immensily better than the one on the East which is not that large as you can see on Google Maps’ satellite images.
Still, I found Ketambe to be a great place thanks to its well-developped trail system. An experienced forest trekker could explore a large part of it on its own.
Leeches are an issue in Ketambe. But I found that tucking my pants in my socks and clearing them regularly from those who still try to go through was enough.
Spotting orangutan was not as easy as I thought, I found several nests but besides a young one that I was lucky enough to spot from very close on the second day it was quite hard. I came back on the same spot on the third day to find maybe the same orangutan but it was very high in the canopea.
The area between the road and the first camp by the river is allegedly the best for orangutan spotting, even though vehicles from the road can be heard all over the place. From the moment you reach the river, the noise gets covered.
Overall I found the forest of Ketambe to be slightly less pristine that in Kedah, huge tree beeings less common.
I stayed at Friendship Guesthouse (check their great website ) . 70’000Rp per night for a double room with cold shower. The staff is very nice and not pushy. They have a restaurant but I eventually took all my meals outside in a local restaurant 500m away that serves food not arranged for Western tastebuds (also cheaper and larger serving).
If I were to come back to Ketambe, I may decide to stay a bit further in Gurah village. Accomodations right in the middle of a small patch of forest are available which should be great for bird spotting.
Visiting from Kedah
My stay in Kedah owes much to Mr Jali’s Kedah Rainforest Guesthouse. The full-board rate is 150’000Rp per person per day. No roads, no sound of motorbike, only you and the nature. Guided treks are charged 500’000Rp per day. The staff is quite nice, food is simple but good. Of course the shower is cold and there is barely any phone signal there.
The immediate surroundings of the lodge are already very rich in wildlife.
Over the 3 days spent hiking, I’ve seen a higher variety of primates than anywhere else in the park :
Groups of Thomas leaf monkeys were rather easily seen. Siamang can be heard every morning and the pictures shown above has been taken right from the lodge. I was lucky enough to spot orangutan on 2 days, which might not be the standard. Outside fruit season (which peaked in December-January) they might be hard to spot.
The trail system is quite good especially in the small patch of forest around the lodge. The other bank of the river can be explored after crossing on a log but progressing through the forest is much more difficult.
Plenty of insects to be seen. The lodge itself and the riverbanks are a good place to check for butterflies.
On the 3rd day I took a guy from the lodge with me to take me to the moss forest. This is actually the beginning of the trek to Mount Leuser summit. I found this area to be better for bird spotting. The change of vegetation is also very interesting to observe.
We also saw interesting vegetation, including pitcher plants. Finally we spotted some civet, squirrel, eagles and 2 wild chicken.
Visiting from Bukit Lawang
Bukit Lawang became a rehabilitation center in 1978 when it was decided that Ketambe would be fully dedicated to researchers. The government ordered the termination of rehabilitation operations in Bukit Lawang in 1991 given the mixed result of the original approach. Since then, the place serves only as a viewing center for tourists. The released population is dependent on daily feeding consisting of banana and milk.
Bukit Lawang is located on the edge of wild orangutans habitats but most visitors end up seeing orangutan regularly fed. They’re free, but definetely not wild.
That’s the closest park entrance gate from an airport (here Medan) and also the most popular.
I visited this place in 2013 with limited interests in wildlife and booked a classic 2D1N tour. It wasn’t bad but I don’t remember seeing any other wildlife but the couple of orangutans roaming near the entrance to get fed. Our groups were way too large and hence noisy.
Unfortunately wildlife feeding by most guides seems to be a common practice in Bukit Lawang. Given that some orangutans are very familiar to humans, I found it possible to get much closer to the apes in Bukit Lawang. Getting such conditions in Ketambe or Kedah requires more luck.
The population of “semi-wild” orangutans in Bukit Lawang shows clear signs of disturbance, including very unusual behaviour (such as mother-infant cannibalism) as well as a dramatically high rate of infant mortality. Please read this study for in-depth analysis.
Additionaly, Sumatran orangutan are very seldomly spotted near the ground in the wild which is obviously not what’s happening in Bukit Lawang.
I believe that a responsible traveller should make the extra effort to visit places where the apes are actually wild. Despite its status, the park is facing a significant number of threats. Better bring revenue to areas actually supporting wild animals which are the ones that need to be preserved in priority.
Transportation guide to Kedah and Ketambe
Kedah is reached from the town of Blangkejeren, itself reachable by bus from Takengon, Aceh and Lhokseumawe from the North, or Kutacane from the South.
Ketambe is a short ride from Kutacane but is also on the way from Kutacane to Blangkejeren.
I tried to put all the places quoted below in my general map of Sumatra.
All prices given below are from 2018.
Coming from Medan
Get from medan kualanamu airport to town.
Medan has an international airport with cheap connections to Kuala Lumpur thanks to Air Asia, as well as flight to Bangkok, Singapore and Penang. Locally it is well connected with most cities in Sumatra as well as Jakarta, Surabaya and Yogjakarta.
From the airport, touts will definetly offer taxi ride to any destination you want (including Bukit Lawang, Lake Toba or even Ketambe). Price might be interesting if you share it with a large group
From the airport a train takes you to Medan train station in about 40min for 100’000Rp. Otherwise follow the signs for buses (check the airport website for updated information about frequency and fares) :
- DAMRI takes you near the Independance square in town and then to Amplas bus terminal where you can take bus to lake Toba. Fare is 15’000 for the square and 20’000 for Amplas as of 2018.
- ALS takes you to directly to Binjai (from where you can reach Bukit Lawang) for 40’000Rp. A ride to town is charged 20’000Rp.
If you want to go straight to Ketambe with no connection, the recommended solution seems to be catching a minibus or a collective taxi in Padang Bulan.
Direct transport from Medan to Kutacane
Different companies offering transportation to destinations west of Medan are gathered on Jamin Ginting Street ( Jl. Jamin Ginting ). Departures are from morning to late afternoon, the car or the minibus leaves when it’s full. Shared taxis are likely to go pick up other passengers in town
Friendship Guesthouse gives detailed information s on their website, I’m goint to rely on it given I never did it that way. To put in a nutshell, minibuses cost 70’000Rp and shared taxi 130’000Rp for about a 7 hours ride.
The most convenient way to reach Padang Bulan from Medan train station or DAMRI bus stop near Independance Square is most likely to use online taxis (car or motorbikes) operated by Grab or Gojek. It requires an Indonesian SIM card though. Rickshaws ( becak ), regular motorbike taxis ( ojek ) or taxis are also availabe but they will probably be more expensive. City minibus ( angkot ) are very likely to be helpful too but they can be confusing to navigate, try to ask around for help about directions.
From Medan to Berastagi / Kabanjahe
If you plan to stop en route in Berastagi or at least the Karo regency, do as following :
- From the airport board ALS bus and ask to be dropped at Simpang Pos . 20’000Rp, 1h15 because of the traffic.
- From here you have regular minibus heading to Kabanjahe (Berastagi is on the way). They leave when full until night, costs 10’000Rp. It’s a 1h15 ride to Berastagi and 1h30 to Kabanjahe.
From Berastagi’s main road, almost every bemo is heading to Kabanjahe. Fare is 5’000Rp for a 20 minutes ride. Cheap accomodation are easier to find in Berastagi.
Get from Kabanjahe to Ketambe
From Kabanjahe you need to go to Kutacane first. Minibus leaves from behind Terminal Bawah Tigabaru on Jl. Mariam Ginting. If I remember well there was 2 companies available, the fare was 60’000Rp or 80’000Rp for a more comfortable minibus dubbed ‘royal’. Took us 3h30 (plus the waiting time of the minibus in Kabanjahe) and an additional 30min for the lunch break.
From Kabanjahe, you need to take a form of collective transport which looks like a pick-up with a roof and benches on the side. It’s called labi-labi . Ask the driver of your minibus from Kabanjahe to drop you at the right place in town. The 30min labi-labi ride costs 20’000Rp (official price seems to be 15’000Rp though).
Get from Kutacane / Ketambe to Blangkejeren / Kedah
There is a bus terminal in Kutacane. When we arrived mid-afternoon, my driver from Kabanjahe advised me to head to another place in town on Jl. Ahmad Yani because bus would be scarce at this time. He dropped me there. Soon we left in a shared regular car if I remember well, fare was 60’000Rp and it took us 3h. This road going right through the middle of the park is beautiful, even though low-scale deforestation can be observed:
Kedah is about 30min away from Blangkejeren, my minibus driver was ok to drop me for no extra cost there given there was another passenger heading in the same direction. Otherwise, ask Mr Jali to arrange a pick-up. He charged me 50’000Rp for an ojek ride from the lodge to Blangkejeren bus station.
On the way back, take a minibus from Blangkjeren to Kutacane. Ketambe is on the way, just asked to be dropped. Fare is 50’000Rp for that portion.
Direct transport from Medan to Blangkejeren
According to Gayo Lues regency tourism department, a few companies operate shared taxis from Medan to Blangkejeren. The companies are CV Kursima, CV Raja World Travel and CV Trans 88. Their office in Medan can be found on Google Maps.
Collective taxis usually offer pick up, including at the airport. Call them for schedule and price, they usually have a WA number. You might need to get assisted by someone speaking Indonesian.
Coming from the North : Bandah Aceh and Takengon
Blangkejeren is served by bus leaving from Banda Aceh and passing Takengon.
Please note that Wings Air now operates direct flights from Medan to Takengon. It you aim at minimizing the driving time, this would be the fastest solution leaving only the bus from Takengon to Blangkjeren that should take about 3 hours.
Susi Air operates small airplanes twice a week between Bandah Aceh and Blangkejeren (the destination is refered to as Gayo Lues) and 3 times a week between Bandah Aceh and Kutacane. According to undated information I got, price should be around 400’000-500’000Rp. The issue is that you cannot book those flights online but only through a travel agency.

Hi there, Thanks very much for this very helpful post. I’m planning to spend a week to trek Gunung Leuser national park for the first time ever. What would you recommend to be the best point of entry? I’m leaning towards Ketambe because Bukit Lawang seems to be overcrowded with tourists. Also, Ketambe seems to offer other more interesting sites nearby, like Kedah. Looking forward to your response. Best wishes!
Hi Basten, glad it helps. Over the 3 entry points I presented, I prefered Kedah which is a bit away from any road. Ketambe (or nearby Gurah) is also good but you are never very far from the road (you need to walk about 30 minutes in Ketambe forest to be far enough for the sounds of cars and motorbikes not to reach you). I also saw the greatest diversity of widlife in Kedah but I’m not sure you can draw any conclusions from that given I just spent a couple of nights in each places. December and January is supposed to be the best season for orangutan spotting 😉
By the way are you working for Mongabay ? Keep up with the good work, I’m a regular reader. Elliot.
Dear Basten and Elliot Do you guys know if Mr. Jali is still active in Kedah giving tours?
I’m quite sure his business is still up and running. His phone number should be 081362291844.
This website is incredibly useful. Thank you for taking the time to construct this.
Thank you Nickolas, have a nice trip to Sumatra 🙂
Thanks to this post we switched from Bukit Lawang to Ketambe. Thanks for the insight.
Hello, So it is possible to walk without a guide on the National Park area or not? I want to go to Gunung Leuser, but want to go with guide, cause is the only way. Now I think go to the Kedah first and make some independent trek after guided 3 days trek, and do the same in Ketambe. You made independent trek in Kedah nera the campsite and then took a guide to the jungle, and in Ketambe only independent. You wrote about the east side to visitors and west side to research. What about guided long trek for 4-5 days is also east side? I dont get it, how does it look? I am gonna to Indonesia only for jungle trek and want to do it best I can. 4 treks, two 3days guided treks and some independent walks. I wanna do it in August but I think better change it for December/January/February when fruits are. Is really big difference between jungle in this places? I mean there is no such huge trees in Kedah or Ketambe like in Bukit Lawang? I dont wanna to Bukit Lawang but I wanna see this magnificient trees.
4-5 days trek on the east side are sold by guides but I guess that you mostly walk in circles in the forest. Old guidebooks refer to week long trek from Ketambe to Bukit Lawang but very few guides are willing to undertake such a trip.
Trail system in Kedah is not very extensive besides the trailhead leading to the Mount Leuser (but it goes into subalpine forest and it’s not the best if you’re looking into large trees and primates). The forest on the other bank on the river in Kedah requires a machette if you want to explore it.
Nevertheless both sites are very interesting and worth a visit.
Do you have current contact info for Kedah? Are they operating still I wonder? Would love be to go there.

Sumatra Adventure
9 days | venture to indonesia’s rugged wilderness in steamy sumatra..
Steamy Sumatra is a rugged jungle paradise for all types of adventurers. The world’s sixth largest island is teeming with untamed nature and is home to many endangered species, including the Sumatran tiger, rhinoceros, elephants and the acclaimed orangutan. On this nine-day Sumatran expedition, travel from Medan to Bukit Lawang and explore Gunung Leuser National Park. Head to Berastagi and hike up the steaming active volcano Sibayak, basking in the glory of misty panoramas from the summit. Finish in Samonsir on Lake Toba, where the colourfully dressed Christian Batak people are happy to have your company. Venture off the beaten track and learn a thing or two about Sumatra.
Trip overview
- Gunung Leuser National Park is your best chance in Indonesia to see orangutans in the wild. Hike through the jungle, home to some 300 bird species and the endangered Sumatran tiger, on a small-group camping experience.
- Begin and end your adventure in Sumatra’s largest city: Medan. Explore the mix of Asian cultures in the city, noticeable in its colourful architecture and delicious mix of food.
- Let your knowledgeable group leader guide you through the thickets of the jungle, past small cultural villages, and to the best places to eat around northern Sumatra.
- Climb the Sibayak Volcano to enjoy panoramic views at its spectacular summit, then head to local hot springs for some well-earned rest and relaxation after the descent.
- Explore Lake Toba and the villages on Samosir Island. Check out Indonesia’s highest waterfall and a take a cultural tour that includes a traditional Batak dance performance.
- By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, Coral Triangle Center Foundation. Donations help expand their coral restoration project and support their educational outreach activities for local schools in Nusa Penida.
- Sumatra is less developed than other islands of the Indonesian archipelago. Due to limited tourism infrastructure, expect there to be more bumpy and windy roads, some longer drives and more basic hotels. On the plus side, you’ll feel like you’re off the beaten track!
- This trip involves either a partial or full camping experience, giving you access to more remote destinations at close proximity, and the joy of camping in the wilderness. This is a participatory trip – a fancy way of saying you’re not just along for the ride, but you are part of a team! Be prepared to roll up your sleeves and help out with camp activities like food prep and washing up. It’s all about giving your new travel mates and group leader a hand, and everyone knows there’s nothing worse than trying to put up a tent on your own! Keep in mind this is jungle camping with twin share tents and no facilities.
- Some of the best scenery on Sumatra is found on hikes. So, while this trip doesn't require a high level of fitness, it’s essential to be at least moderately fit if you want to partake in all activities.
- You may also want to check out our Best of Indonesia (TISSC) if you have longer time to explore in the country.
Selamat datang! Welcome to Indonesia. The adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm. If you happen to arrive early, perhaps check out Maimun Palace – designed by a Dutch Architect and built in the 19th century, it combines architecture from Malay, Indian and Islamic cultures and is now a museum. Alternatively, buy a ticket and take a guided tour of the museum at Tjong A Fie Mansion – known as "the historical jewel in Medan", the Tjong A Fie was built in 1895 by a hakka merchant and is modelled on the Cheong Fatt Tze mansion in Penang. After your important welcome meeting, you could head to grab some street food with your group at one of the night markets in town, or go to a local restaurant – your group leader will know of some good spots.
- Hotel (1 night)
There are no meals included on this day.
- Medan - Maimun Palace - IDR10000
- Medan Grand Mosque - IDR5000
It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place. If you can't arrange a flight that will arrive in time, it's a good idea to arrive a day early so you can attend. We'll be happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability).
Jump aboard a private vehicle and drive to Bukit Lawang (approximately 5 hours). The first part of the journey involves quite heavy traffic, but the roads are nice and smooth. Closer to Bukit Lawang it gets bumpy and windy, so brace yourself for a bit of an adventure. The reward for the journey is the destination – Bukit Lawang a peaceful village located on the banks of the Bohorok river, right next to the Gunung Leuser National Park. In the afternoon you can take an optional tour in the countryside by becak (cycle rickshaw) or cool off with a refreshing swim in the river. There will be also be plenty of time to prepare for your jungle trek.
- Guesthouse (1 night)
- Bukit Lawang - Countryside tour - IDR200000
Set off on your trekking adventure through the Gunung Leuser National Park with an experienced guide (approximately 5–6 hours). The night will be spent camping out in the jungle. This UNESCO World Heritage-listed park spans 7927 square kilometres and is one of the world's most diverse ecosystems. It's the home of many endangered species, including the Sumatran tiger, rhinoceros and elephants. These animals are extremely rare to see but you will get the chance to go in search for wild orangutans. There used to be an orangutan rehabilitation centre here, but now these creatures have all been returned to their natural habitat, so this is your best chance in Indonesia to see orangutans in the wild. There are also 300 species of birds, and many rare plants and flowers. Today's hike is hilly and can be muddy. The paths are mostly clear, but there are some sections where you’ll have to climb over large fallen logs. You may stop and rest while the guides go in search for orangutans. Along the way, guides point out orangutan nests, edible plants for you to try, monkeys, birds, and wild orangutan. You will carry your own lunch and break for lunch along the way then continue trekking to the camp site, where the guides set up and cook dinner for the group.
- Camping (with no facilities) (1 night)
- Gunung Leuser NP - Jungle Wildlife Trek
- Gunung Leuser NP - Trekking Lunch
- Gunung Leuser NP - Campsite Dinner
Variations to this trek are uncommon, but possible due to varying weather conditions (in the rainy season you will try to reach camp earlier, as it normally rains in the late afternoon) and timing depends on the group’s physical condition. The leader gives the hike a 6/10 difficulty in the dry season and an 8/10 in the wet season. It's a wild, remote spot, which means maximum adventure and zero facilities! Twin share tents and boiled stream water refills are provided. You may want to bring your own water purification tablets for tonight.
You will need to prepare an overnight bag for your trek, and we will leave our large bags at the hotel. It is advised to wear long-sleeved lightweight clothing, as this will keep the sun and mosquitoes away and help in the year-round hot and very humid weather. We suggest you bring a spare set of clothes for the evening, a sleep sheet, biodegradable soap or shower gel, insect repellent, a pack towel or sarong and rain jacket. At night, the temperatures do drop slightly but still stay mild. Please refer to packing for information about clothing suitable footwear. A sleeping bag will be provided but you may want to bring your own sleeping bag liner/sleep sheet for extra comfort. Porters are available at a cost of 150,000 IDR per day. Please inform your leader in advance if you would like to hire a porter.
You will wake early to the sound of gibbons and continue the trek down river (approximately 2 hours). Your feet may get wet, so strap-on sandals, booties or local rubber shoes are recommended to pack. Head back to Bukit Lawang, where day rooms will be made available for a freshen up and shower before you get on the bus. It's also a good chance to stock up on some tropical fruit for the road. Depart early afternoon for Berastagi (approximately 5.5 hours). Berastagi is the home of the Karo people, a Batak sub-group with traditional villages (long houses), and is your destination for the night.
The beautiful mountainous area en route to Berastagi goes as high as 1,300 metres above sea level. During the day, temperatures usually rise over 25 C (77 F) but can become quite cold overnight and in the morning, especially in the wet season. It is best to pack clothing that you can layer to ensure you are ready for any season.
Drive for approximately 30 minutes to the starting point of today's hike. The hike (approximately 2-3 hours) brings you to the top of Sibayak Volcano (2094 m). It's quite steep, muddy and slippery, especially in the wet season. Follow a shady jungle path which, towards the top, opens up into a more alpine setting. Long pants are essential to protect you from poisonous plants, and a trekking stick will also come in handy. After reaching the top, sit down to a traditional bungkus lunch and enjoy the views. From the summit you can see (and hear) the steaming vapours escaping from the fumaroles of this active volcano. Then it's time for the descent (approximately 1 hour). Afterwards, head straight to the nearby hot springs for a soothing soak – after a few days of trekking, you deserve to relax in these pools, which are all naturally heated by the volcano.
- Mt Sibayak - Picnic lunch
- Mt Sibayak - Volcano climb
- Berastagi - Hot springs
This morning, head to Tongging Village by private vehicle, on the banks of Lake Toba (2 hours). The road from Berastagi to Lake Toba is a nice, smooth road. Then, continue on and stop at Sipiso-Piso waterfall, which was formed by a small underground river of the Karo plateau. Watch as water cascades from a cave in the side of the Lake Toba caldera some 120 metres (360 feet) down to lake level – forming Indonesia's highest waterfall. Lake Toba itself, surrounded by mountains, is a peaceful spot to relax. It was formed by a huge volcanic eruption 70,000 years ago; a second eruption 50,000 years later created an island the size of Singapore in the middle of the lake – Samosir Island. Your accommodation tonight is right next to the lake and boasts nice views of the water, mountains and rice fields.
- Lake Toba - Sipiso-Piso Waterfall
- Dokan Village - Batak longhouse visit
Embark on a day tour in Samosir. Visit the Stone Chairs and the Simanindo Museum (in a traditional house). You’ll also travel up to a viewpoint on the island which gives you a panoramic vista of the below Lake Toba and the surrounding Sumatran countryside. Walk through nearby rice fields and stop by a local Batak house for a traditional lunch. Toba Island is dotted with many ancient and modern grave sites, several of which you’ll see on today's tour. You’ll also have the chance to enjoy a traditional Batak dance performance. The Toba Bataks have a unique religion, architecture and culture. Although they are predominantly Christian, they also practice animism. The most distinctive element of their culture is the traditional architecture – extraordinary boat-like houses with roofs resembling buffalo horns.
- Lake Toba - Samosir Island day tour
- Lake Toba - Stone Chairs
- Lake Toba - Simanindo Museum
- Lake Toba - Batak Dance Performance
Drive back to Simanindo (approximately 45 minutes). From there, take a boat back over Lake Toba to Tigaras (approximately 45 minutes). Make a stop at a traditional Dokan Village where you'll find a handful of traditional houses which are still the homes of local Batak families. Afterwards, continue back to Medan (approximately 3.5 hours).
With no activities planned for today, you are free to depart at any time. If you would like to spend more time in Medan, we’ll be happy to book additional accommodation (subject to availability).
If you have pre-booked a departure transfer to the airport or travelling by taxi please allow between 2-2.5 hours to travel from the hotel in Medan to the International airport.

Hiking in Berastagi, Sumatra: Gunung Sibayak volcano climb
Hiking in berastagi.
Berastagi is a small town in the highlands of northern Sumatra, Indonesia , near the city of Medan and the popular travel destinations of Lake Toba and Bukit Lawang . It’s primarily known for its close proximity to two active volcanoes, Gunung Sibayak (2,212m) and Gunung Sinabung (2,460m). Both of these volcanoes make for good day-hikes, but the latter has been extremely active in recent years (especially in 2013 & 2014), with eruptions causing mass evacuations and a number of fatalities – in other words, if you want to go hiking in Berastagi it’s going to be the Sibayak volcano climb, with Gunung Sinabung off-limits for the time being until it settles down.
On my first visit to Sumatra with my friend Dan (years before Sinabung’s outbursts), we went to do some Berastagi hiking after visiting Lake Toba and opted to climb Gunung Sibayak, which is the more straightforward of the two as it’s a bit smaller and the walking trail starts higher up the mountain, and it’s also closer to town so easier to reach. I would usually have preferred to go for the bigger mountain, but we were intending to climb Mt Kinabalu a few weeks later so this was more about climbing a volcano and looking into a crater for the first time than it was about how challenging the hike was. A few years later some friends of mine did climb Sinabung (before the recent spate of eruptions started) and said it was pretty tough – but Sinabung will be best observed from a distance for the foreseeable future. In fact I’ve read that Berastagi has seen a big increase in visitor numbers due to the ongoing Sinabung eruptions and there are a number of popular viewing points from which to observe the action… although I have seen gas billowing out of the crater of Vulcan Concepcion from up very close, I’m yet to see a full volcanic eruption (though not for lack of trying) so will definitely head back to Berastagi if I visit Sumatra again.
Guung Sibayak’s crater:
Gunung Sibayak volcano climb
The Sibayak volcano climb can be started by walking from the town itself, or you can take a bus to the trailhead proper. Feeling lazy, we opted for the latter – either way, be sure to get maps and directions from your guesthouse. The trails on the mountain aren’t so well marked or maintained so don’t rely on being able to just walk up the hill and work it out as you go – it would be easy to get lost. As Berastagi is at an altitude of around 1,300m, and the bus takes you up a bit higher from there, the walk up to 2,200m isn’t particularly strenuous – nor is it particularly interesting at first, as it’s partly just up a road and the views don’t really open up until you get to the top. Once up there, though, you are treated to some lovely views of forest-clad mountains (including Sinabung) stretching away on all sides, and while the crater isn’t the most dramatic I’ve seen (having since looked down into two volanic craters in Japan – Mt Aso and Fuji ) it’s still interesting.
To descend we went down the other side of the mountain in order to reach the hot springs at Semangat Gunung, but it was rainy season and as we were on our way down the heavens opened and gave us an absolute soaking – by the time we reached the bottom we had no desire to be any wetter than we already were so gave the springs a miss and caught a minivan back to town… our fellow passengers were a group of local schoolgirls who found themselves in a difficult conflict between their curiosity and their shyness, the result being that they were trying to surreptitiously take photos of Danny and I without looking at us directly. We rumbled them and turned our own cameras on them, resulting in much hilarity and this photo which always amuses me:
Gunung Sibayak is probably one of the easiest volcanoes you can hike up – though there are many you can go up by cable car (e.g. Japan’s Aso-san) or road (e.g. Costa Rica’s Poas) – and makes for a nice day out; combined with the chance to observe the ongoing volcanic activity of Gunung Sinabung, Berastagi makes for a good couple of days on your way to or from Toba or Bukit Lawang. (If heading to Bukit Lawang from Berastagi, see if you can arrange direct transportation and avoid routing through Medan. If you do go through Medan, go as early as possible – in my experience an evening journey from Medan to Bukit Lawang can be… interesting)
(Update: I’ve just been looking at some friends’ Facebook pictures from their recent Berastagi hiking trip, and the devastation on the slopes of Sinabung in the background is incredible – the vegetation has been completely erased by the lava floes)
Have you been hiking in Berastagi? What did you think? Any questions? Leave a comment below and I’ll get back to you.

Operated by intrepid travel.
Back in 1989, two guys from Melbourne, Australia by the names of Darrell and Manch set off on an adventure to the other side of the world. They travelled to Africa and without air conditioning on their modified truck, they filled it with supplies, some beer, a bunch of aviator sunglasses, and some friends. On that trip, they came up with the idea that perhaps others may be interested in this style of travel too. Just like that, Intrepid was born. Intrepid has come a long way since then, now giving over 100,000 travelers a year the opportunity to experience small group travel across all 7 continents. They use local transport, sleep in local accommodation from Cambodian stilt houses to Moroccan riads, and employ 100% local leaders. With three different travel styles including basix, original and comfort, themes ranging from cycling trips to family holidays, and itineraries crafted with the perfect balance of must-see sights and free time, Intrepid caters to every type of traveller no matter their age, budget or travel style. 5D Lake Toba & Medan Itinerary — Caldera views and Gastronomic Adventures
Enjoy the breathtaking caldera views by Lake Toba , hike up smoking volcanoes in Berastagi , and replenish your lost calories in the gastronomic paradise of Medan .
When you think of calderas, an immediate destination that comes to mind is Santorini — one of the most desirable honeymoon destinations . But just a 1.5 hour flight from Singapore (to Medan), and a 2-4 hour drive, the caldera views in Lake Toba come as a close second. After discovering the adventures of Yogyakarta , we were back this time to discover other hidden gems Indonesia had to offer.
Pre-trip Essentials:
Best time to visit North Sumatra: The dry season spans between May to September with the monsoon creeping in from late October. We were there in early November and although it poured heavily everyday in the late afternoons to evenings, the mornings were cool and sunny and we had spectacular sunrise views.
Flight: 1.5hr Direct flight from Singapore to Medan via Garuda Indonesia.
Getting around Sumatra: Indonesia is best covered with a private driver as the sights are far from each other and public transport will take twice the amount of time to get there; we’re talking about 2-4 hours here. We got our ride from Lovely Holidays at S$77/day including petrol. Email Ina (from Lovely Holidays) for more enquires.
DAY 1: Singapore to Lake Toba
There are 2 ways to enjoy Lake Toba. If you’re on a 5-day trip, we’d suggest picking just 1 to truly enjoy each place to its fullest.
(1) From Pulau Samosir
Pulau Samosir is an island in the middle of Lake Toba which is almost the size of Singapore. It’s probably the largest island within an island in the world. There are loads of resorts, most of which offer lake views where you can enjoy water sports just steps from your room!
How to get there: From Kualanamu International Airport (Medan), it’s a 4 – 4.5 hour drive to Parapat where you can take a 30 minute ferry to Tuktuk village. The ferry will cost Rp.100,000/car or S$10 (one-way).
(2) From Taman Simalem Resort
The more visually captivating option of the 2, Taman Simalem resort is located in Tongging, some 1200m above sea level — which means you’d enjoy cool weather (15 – 23 degrees) all year round. The elevation also makes Taman Simalem a very desirable vantage point for Lake Toba . We heard that people drive up 2 hours and pay an entrance fee (Rp.50,000/car or S$5/car) just to catch the view within the resort’s premises — of course, this is free for guests of the resort!
At 206-hectare large, this resort is pretty much an attraction of its own. It’s a little far from everywhere else but there are multiple restaurants within and the resort will provide a complimentary room for your hired driver too.
How to get there: Fly direct from Singapore to Medan, drive 3.5 hours to Taman Simalem Resort .
For us, we arrived in Medan via Garuda Indonesia at 12pm and headed straight for Taman Simalem Resort.
If you arrive early, catch the sunset over the large padi terraces within the resort.
DAY 2: Air Terjun Sipiso-piso And Pulau Samosir
Start your day early by catching the sunrise from One Tree Hill and check out Indonesia’s tallest waterfall Sipiso-piso just 20 minutes from the resort. Return to explore Taman Simalem ; take a yoga class overlooking Lake Toba, go on a jungle trek (both free for resort guests) or treat yourself to a relaxing Indonesian massage or Ayurvedic treatment .
The resort even organises organic farm tours as well as full day trips to Pulau Samosir if you’re up for that. We did a day trip to Pulau Samosir with our hired driver.
Air Terjun Sipiso-piso (Waterfall)
If you only have time for one epic waterfall this trip, Sipiso-piso is it. At 120 metres, it’s the tallest plunge waterfall in Indonesia. The last time I felt so amazed by the grandiose of a waterfall was while standing in front of Skogafoss in Iceland; sans the bitter cold. No kidding. But that’s just me.
From Taman Simalem Resort, it’s only a 20-30 minute drive to a lookout point. But for the adventurous, a 15-minute trek down to the base of the waterfall is where you can truly experience how impressive the waterfall is. The steps are pretty steep but the views are worth it!
Pulau Samosir
From Taman Simalem to Pulau Samosir: Drive down to Tigaras Ferry Jetty (2hours) and take a 30-minute ferry ride to Simanindo port (Pulau Samosir side).
*Ferry leaves Tigaras at 8am, 9:30am, 11:30am and from Simanindo at 2pm, 4pm and 6pm.
*Pro-tip: Make a pit stop at Simarjarunjung Rest House to enjoy a cup of ginger tea and some Goreng Pisang (banana fritters) over a view of Lake Toba.
This is also an Instagram playground with interesting installations like a nest hanging between 2 trees and a swing with the perfect view of Lake Toba.
First stop in Pulau Samosir, explore Ambarita Village where you can find traditional Batak houses that used to belong to the king and his family.
Within Ambarita, you’ll also spot these ancient Siallagan stone chairs where people were executed for serious crimes like murder or rape. The executioners would be locked to a piece of wood under the King’s house until their day of trial.
If found guilty, they would have their heads chopped off and left on a stick by the village entrance. The body would then be thrown into Lake Toba.
Thankfully, this practice no longer continues today because Lake Toba is perfect for water activities. If you’re up for some kayaking, jet-skiing, or a banana boat ride, just approach one of the resorts along the lake in the Tuk Tuk area.
We got our kayak rented from Tabo Cottages at Rp.40,000 (~S$4) for a double (sit-on-top) kayak. Lake Toba’s calm waters, and gorgeous caldera view makes this the perfect post lunch activity.
If you’re staying at the resort, you can even sign up for a the full-day kayaking expedition which brings you around the entire Samosir island.
For an early dinner before catching the return ferry back to Tigaras, stop by Jenny’s Restaurant for grilled fresh lake fish for Rp.65,000(~S$6.50).
DAY 3: Berastagi — Volcanoes and Hotsprings
Check out of Taman Simalem early, drive 1.5 hours to Berastagi (also called Brastagi) to trek up the famous volcano Gunung Sibayak and treat yourself at the end with a dip in the hot spring pools .
Gunung Sibayak (Volcano)
There are various treks you can take up to the crater of Gunung Sibayak ranging from 1.5 hours to 5 hours. The 5-hour trek through the dense jungle will require a guide (~Rp.250,000/~S$25). The shorter route (1.5 hours) is quite straight forward and can be done on your own.
For the shortest route up, get your driver to drop you off at Sibayak Multinational Guesthouse where it’s a 1 – 1.5hour trek up to the top.
We started on a pretty steep gravel road, left unrepaired since the last eruption. Once the gravel road ended, we heaved a sigh of relief as the incline became a lot more manageable.
Once you spot the smoky sulphur gas, you’re more than half way there!
Walk down to the base of the crater where you can get a clean source of mud that’s great for the skin.
After descending, treat yourself to a relaxing dip at one of the public hot springs (Rp.5,000 – 7,000/pax or ~S$5-7) on Karo street.
From Berastagi, it’s a 2.5 hour drive back to Medan City.
For local food in Medan, make a stop at Simpang Tiga Restaurant for dinner.
This restaurant has an interesting concept where food will be placed on your table and you’ll only be charged for what you eat. You can also head to the back kitchen and pick your own dishes. What we loved was that each variety came in small servings so we could try a bunch. The chicken wings, and mutton curry were our favourites.
JW Marriott Medan
Finally, end the night at JW Marriott Medan , perfect after a long day of activities. Despite being a 5-star brand, a night at Medan’s JW Marriott starts at a very reasonable price of under S$100/night.
While we usually scrimp on accommodations while travelling, we couldn’t pass up on this value deal. Because, how often do you get to stay at a JW Marriot for under S$100 right?!
The hotel is also conveniently located to some of the famous food stores covered in Day 4.
DAY 4: Medan City
Throughout the trip, every local we spoke to would say there isn’t much to do in Medan… until we got to the topic on food; their eyes would light up as they enthusiastically shared their favourites in the area. So, for the foodies with a day to spare in Medan, here’s an introduction to your haven.
Getting around Medan: Grab is great for short distances around the city and each ride should cost no more than S$2.
Bihun Bibek Asie 阿泗 鴨米粉
Start your day with breakfast at a popular breakfast spot, Bihun Bibek Asie (Duck Noodles) — rice vermicelli topped with a generous serving of duck. It’s a little pricey for Medan’s standards but you can see from the non-stop stream of customers, the quality and quantity you’re getting is well worth it!
The great thing about Medan is that the Chinese Indonesians here are allowed to retain the use of Chinese so most of them are able to converse in it. The Chinese boss runs the operations by himself and is super friendly to travellers.
Cost: Rp65,000/bowl (~S$6.5) Opening Hours: 6:30AM – 11AM (They sell out pretty early!) Address: Jl. Kumango, Kesawan, West Medan, Medan City, North Sumatra 202212, Indonesia
Hock Seng Bakmi
Right next to Bihun Bibek, is Hock Seng Bakmi — noodles topped with a wide variety of seafood. You can choose between yellow noodles, kwetiau (flat rice noodles), bihun (rice vermicelli) or a combination of 2. The seafood was fresh and had so many varieties we lost count. Some include, prawn, crab, sliced fish, fish cake and fishball.
Cost: Rp59,000/bowl (~S$5.90) Opening Hours: 6:30AM – 1PM Address: Jl. Gwangju No.17
Tjong A Fie Mansion
After a hearty breakfast, take a walk to the Tjong A Fie Mansion just 4 minutes away. The mansion was owned by a well respected, high-ranking Chinese businessman in the 1870s.
It may not look like much from the outside the interior is impressive even for modern standards. It may be old but you can tell this was once a very rich person’s home. The way each room was dedicated to receiving different guests, the pleasing blend of Chinese and European designs and it even had a ballroom! Each room is well-kept close to its original-state and one of the grandsons still lives in a private section of the home.
Entrance Fee: Rp.35,000 (~S$3.5), includes a guided tour Opening Hours: 9AM – 5PM
Soto Kesawan
If you still have space in your tummy, this stall highly raved by a Grab driver is just across the road from Tjong A Fie’s mansion. Soto Kesawan’s menu is simple: Prawn, chicken or beef in a homely coconut soup served with a hearty plate of rice to pair. We’d highly recommend the Udang (prawn) version if you find yourself here!
Cost: Rp.24,500 (~S$2.5) Opening Hours: 7AM – 4PM (Closed on Sundays)
Istana Maimun
From Tjong A Fie Mansion, the Istana Maimun (or Maimoon) is a 15-minute walk. Alternatively, hop on a Grab car for Rp10,000 (S$1). One of the most well known landmarks in Medan, the palace’s interior has a blend of Malay, Islamic and Indian architecture. There are 30 rooms but only the main hall is open to public.
You can dress up in traditional costumes used by the royal family for prices starting from Rp.10,000 but apart from that, there isn’t much info available to tourists.
Entrance Fee: Rp.5,000 (~S$0.5) Opening Hours: 8AM – 5PM
Bolu Meranti (Medan Roll Cake)
For something local to bring home, the roll cakes at Bolu Meranti is a local favourite. The queue is consistently long but moves along quite quickly.
The standard Jejuk (cheese) roll cake costs Rp.65,000 but you can get 3 smaller rolls that come in 3 different flavours (Cheese, chocolate and berry) for Rp 85,000.
The Jejuk tends to be on the sweeter side so if you don’t have a sweet tooth, perhaps opt for the pandan cake instead.
Cost: From Rp.65,000 (~S$6.5) for the standard roll cake Opening Hours: 10AM – 8PM
Kwetiau Ateng
Locals say this is the best place for Kwetiau in the entire Medan. Problem is, there are 3 outlets and different people claim favouritism to each so, our verdict? Just visit the one that’s nearest to you.
We enjoyed the fried kwetiau but the gravy version was equally delicious.
Cost: Rp.32,000 – Rp.38,000 (~S$3.5) depending on outlet Opening Hours: 8:30AM – 12AM Address: Jl. Sumatera No. 3 / Jl. S Parman No. 52A / Jl. Wahidin No.9M
Macehat coffee
The Avocado Coffee Float is the star of the menu here at Macehat Coffee and the cafe is only a 4-minute walk from Kwetiau Ateng (S Parman). Other interesting things on the menu is the Caffe Brulee and the Mocha Lava Jelly although our favourite was still the ACF.
Cost: Rp.35,000 – Rp.38,000 (~S$3.5) for the Avocado Coffee Float Opening Hours: 10:30AM – 6:45PM Address: Jl. Karo No. 20
Zen garden massage
After an entire day of feasting through Medan, I’m sure you’ll be in Knead for some of this 😛
Locals tell us this is one of the best massage parlours in the entire Medan and we enjoyed every bit of it . Zen garden massage spa is clean, cosy and despite minimal English from the staff, I thought the written questionnaires asking for your preferences was a nice touch! You can state your preferred strength, sensitive areas as well as places of injury you might want a bit of caution.
I generally like tougher massages but some are just not enjoyable. The masseur I got (Tania) had heaps of strength but worked in a super intuitive way, reading my micro reactions and very quickly adjusted to just the right amount of pressure. I never had to give any verbal feedback and 90 minutes went by in a jiffy.
Cost: Rp.198,000 (~S$20) for 90 minutes Opening Hours: 10AM – 10PM Address: Jalan J. S. Parman No. 22/272
Si bolang durian
The locals in Medan love their Durian and the most famous one around is Durian Ucok but we chanced upon Si Bolang and couldn’t give the cutely decorated place a miss. Great for a post-dinner treat as the place is open even in the wee hours of the morning.
Cost: Seasonal rates (Off season price Rp.95,000/kg or S$9.50/kg) Opening Hours: 24 hours
Day 5: Afternoon flight back to Singapore
Our Garuda flight back to Singapore was at 1:30PM so we could spend the morning lazing around the pool at JW Marriott before leaving for the airport. We were told the roads in Medan tend to be quite jammed at any time of the day so we’d recommend allocating 1-1.5 hours of travel time to the airport.
Alternatively, there’s an hourly train service just 10 minutes from JW Marriott which will get you to the airport in 30 minutes. You can take a Grab car or ask the hotel to arrange your transport to the train station.
Direct Flight from Singapore to Medan
Awarded ‘The World’s Best Cabin Crew’ 4 years in a row by Skytrax (2014 – 2017), Garuda Indonesia flies from Singapore to Medan, daily.
Despite being a short 1.5 hour flight, wide seats and sufficient leg room during flights are always a delight to have and that’s what the Garuda Indonesia’s plane offered. We arrived fresh after a short power nap on board.

Would you recommend to sign up tour packages or free&easy for trip to Medan?
Hi Jasmine,
Unfortunately we can’t comment on tour packages since we didn’t experience one.
It’s definitely possible to go free & easy but you’ll be spending a very long time on the public buses.
Alternatively, (like us) you could hire a private driver for around $77/day (makes sense if you’re travelling in a group of 3-4) and decide what sort of itinerary you’d like. Hope that helps!
I’m planning to go medan. May I know where do we hire the private driver? is it safe to travel on our own there?
Hello! Under essentials near the top of the post we recommended a driver that we happened to use. Pretty good!
Yup Medan is pretty safe. Like any bit city, there will be some petty crime, but taking the usual precautions should be fine. Avoid walking alone at night, keep valuables out of sight etc.
Hello, thank you for this article! Would just like to ask – would it be okay for a solo female traveller to go to Medan? And as for transport wise, would it be recommended to still hire a private driver or would it be better to get around in public transport instead? Thanks!
Hi Jan, solo is fine but perhaps not to walk around alone at night. Would suggest a private driver as some places are quite hard to get to without a car.
For Istana Maimun (or Maimoon), you have entered Entrance Fee: Rp.5,000 (~S$5) Opening Hours: 8AM – 5PM
Is it 50,000 or 5,000? Might want to rectify (:
Hi Fel! it’s Rp.5000 or S$0.50. Made a mistake with the conversion! The place is a little underwhelming though!
Could you advise us the contact of the driver if you would recommend him pls? Thanks!
Hi Joyce, the driver details are already in the post and yes we recommend them!
Hi pretty ,
Im planning to go on Nov 9 – Nov 12 as well . but we will fly direct to Silangit airport . can you send me your itinerary as a reference. As i checx out the weather forecast its rain most of the time ist true ???
Usually the forecast is right! However, while we were there during the rainy season, there were still large periods of sunshine throughout the day. That said, mother nature is hard to predict!
Our itinerary is as written! 🙂
Hi Cherie, i am going Medan for 5 days in Dec. Would like to follow your itinerary as it’s fully packed. Can i confirm i should book as follows: Day 1 /2 stay at Taman Simalem Resort Day 3 stay at Berastagi (hot spring in hotel??) Day 4 /5 stay at JW Marriot Thanks in advance for your help
Hi Karen! We didn’t stay in Berastagi though that would probably make you trip more spread out. We spent 2 nights at JW Marriot and flew back on the 5th day as mentioned in the itin!
nice… best trip… toba indonesia..
Lake Toba is really wonderful, evet if you just visited there you just want to back there again and again, anyway thankyou for the great post!

Aktifnya Gunung Sinabung membuat para pendaki mencari destinasi lainnya, seperti Gunung Sibuatan.
