Need to Know: Flying Ryanair with a baby or toddler

Will you be flying Ryanair with a baby, toddler or young child soon? Some of their rules and fees for babies and toddlers might come as a surprise to some families.

Here’s a guide to important information and details to know before flying Ryanair with a baby or young children.

Flying Ryanair with an infant less than 2 years old:

Infants and babies less than 24 months flying on laps:.

Minimum age for travel: Infants must be at least 8 days old to fly on Ryanair.

Lap infant fares: For both domestic and international flights, Ryanair charges a flat fare of 25€/25£ each way for a lap-held infant or child less than 2 years old.

Seating requirements: Be sure to reserve a window seat for whichever adult will hold the baby because only these seats are equipped with two oxygen masks on Ryanair.

Infant baggage allowance: Lap-held children are not allowed a carry-on bag or checked suitcase of their own. However, parents are permitted to bring a diaper bag with essentials weighing less than 5kg (dimensions: 45 x 35 x 20cms) into the cabin in addition to their own carry-on cabin baggage.

Lap children can now be booked online on Ryanair.com. If you need to add an infant to an existing reservation, you’ll need to call the airline.

Infants and toddlers up to 24 months flying in paid seats on Ryanair:

IMPORTANT: Ryanair does not allow babies less than 1 year old to fly in their own seat for all portions of the flight (see note on “infant comfort seat” below).

If your child is between 12 months and 2 years and you would like them to fly in an airplane seat with the CARES flight safety harnes or a car seat for all phases of your flight, contact Ryanair.

What is an “infant comfort seat” on Ryanair flights?

It is possible to purchase what Ryanair calls an “infant comfort seat,” eg. an extra seat for a child less than 2 years old who will not fly with an airline-approved flight restraint (car seat or CARES harness to occupy during the cruise portion of the flight.

However, you can only make this reservation by phoning Ryanair’s call center (find the number to call from your country here ).

Using car seats on Ryanair or the CARES harness:

IMPORTANT: Ryanair allows only forward-facing car seats (child safety seats) certified for air travel. Alternatively, they accept the Kids Fly Safe CARES flight safety harness . For more, see my full review of the CARES harness her e – and see note about avoiding counterfeit CARES.)

Your car seat must have either of the following certification labels:

• Car seats from the U.S. must be labeled the “Certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft”
• Car seats from Europe must have the European Standard Mark.

Contact reservations well in advance to ensure your child will have an appropriate seat where either restraint may be used.

Ryanair baggage allowance for baby equipment:

Free checked baby gear: Ryanair allows two free checked pieces of baby equipment per infant. These can be a pushchair or stroller plus either a car seat or bassinet.

Strollers and Pushchairs: Collapsible pushchairs/strollers may be used right up the gate. However, other items must be checked at the ticket counter (closes 40 minutes before flight).

Checking additional baby equipment and gear ? You can check up to two additional pieces of baby equipment or child travel items for a fee.  Pay 15€/15£ per item when included in your online booking, or 25€/25£ when paid at the airport (for car seats, safety boosters, travel cots, etc.).

Renting baby gear at your destination: If it’s more convenient, you may instead be able to rent baby equipment at your destination. See the Worldwide Directory of Baby Gear Rentals for more.

What parents should know about Ryanair Family Plus

Some kids can fly free on ryanair with family plus.

When booking your Ryanair reservation, it’s possible for kids under 12 years to get free seats on flights with a paying adult under the Family Plus bundle option.

How many kids fly free? Remarkably, for an airline known for nickel-and-diming passengers, up to 4 kids under 12 years could fly for free with one paying parent booking a Family Plus bundle.

However, you may be limited to seat availability on certain rows, which will be shown in your options during the online booking process. Be sure to book your reservation as early as possible.

Why else would families want to book a Ryanair Family Plus bundle?

The Ryanair “Family Plus Bundle” is available to all bookings (single reservation) with up to six passengers that include at least one child up to 15 years old. Note: Kids 16 years and older are priced as adults on Ryanair flights, and only kids under 12 years qualify for free seats.

With the Family Plus bundle, the whole family receives the following baggage allowance:

• 1 small cabin bag or carry-on bag for the entire group, up to 40x20x25 cm and will fit beneath the seat in front of you
• 1 10 kg. checked bag for each group member on the reservation
• Free seats for any children under 12 years on the reservation
• 1 20 kg. checked suitcase for the whole family (must be checked at the Bag Drop Desk).

Volare con Ryanair con dei bambini: tutto ciò che si deve sapere

Volare con Ryanair con dei bambini : quali sono le regole? Come comportarsi con i posti a sedere, con i bagagli a mano, con l’attrezzatura ed i dispositivi? Proviamo a dare una risposta a queste domande.

In viaggio con Bambini

Iniziamo dicendo che sui voli Ryanair i bambini sono considerati tali dai 2 compiuti ai 16 anni e benché le tariffe del volo non siano scontate per loro, godono comunque di alcune agevolazioni.

E’ anche importante sapere  che i bambini non possono viaggiare da soli , ma devono necessariamente essere accompagnati.

I bambini sotto i due anni, ovvero i neonati pagano una tariffa ridotta e non hanno un posto a sedere : dovranno rimanere in braccio al genitore o all’accompagnatore ed indossare un particolare cintura di sicurezza durante il decollo e l’atterraggio o quando richiesto.

E’ comunque possibile richiedere un posto a sedere per il vostro neonato : per farlo dovrete contattare il call center Ryanair.

Sono ammessi a bordo i neonati a partire da 8 giorni . Inoltre i neonati possono essere inseriti nella prenotazione di un volo durante l’apposito processo online.

Bagaglio a mano bambini con Ryanair

Iniziamo subito dalle cose importanti: il bagaglio a mano. Le regole per i bambini sono le stesse che si applicano agli adulti: hanno diritto ad un bagaglio a mano incluso nel costo del biglietto con dimensioni 40 cm x 20 cm x 25 cm per un massimo di 5kg. Si tratta quindi di una piccola borsa che deve poter stare sotto il sedile di fronte al proprio.

All’interno del bagaglio a mano non possono venire trasportati liquidi se non in una busta separata con una capienza massima di 10 botticini da 100 ml ciascuno.

Fanno eccezione , per quanto riguarda i bambini: il latte del bambino, latte in polvere, acqua sterilizzata e alimenti per bambini che siano necessari per il volo , anche se eccedono i 100 ml.

I neonati, invece , hanno diritto -nonostante non abbiano posto a sedere – ad ad  un bagaglio a mano fino a 5 kg di dimensione 45x35x20cm in aggiunta al bagaglio a mano del genitore.

Valigia cavalcabile Trunki o similare

C’è una  piccola deroga alle misure del bagaglio  a mano per i bambini (età 2-11). La  valigia cavalcabile Trunki , o comunque un altro marchio  con le stesse caratteristiche e dimensioni simili,  sono accettate a bordo come bagaglio a mano anche se superano leggermente le dimensioni massime previste per il bagaglio piccolo  (40 x 20 x 25 cm).

Priorità e due bagagli a mano

Il bagaglio a mano incluso nel biglietto Ryanair è decisamente piccolo: una borsetta. Per i piccoli viaggiatori che necessitano di più spazio, in fase di acquisto del biglietto o durante il check-in online è possibile acquistare servizi extra come Priorità e due bagagli a mano.

Imbarcare attrezzattura per bambini?

No problem! Come molte altre compagnie aeree, Ryanair permette il trasporto gratuito di ben due dispositivi per ogni singolo bambino. Perciò potrete portare con voi il passeggino e un altro dispositivo a scelta, come seggiolino auto, lettino da viaggio, seggiolone,ecc … Insomma ciò che vi serve di più.

Per imbarcare l’attrezzatura dei bambini è necessario dirigersi al banco del check-in e fare etichettare tutti gli oggetti.

Il passeggino resterà con voi fino al gate e quindi fino all’imbarco, mentre lettino, seggiolino altro, ecc, dopo essere stati etichettati dovranno venir consegnati all’imbarco degli oggetti fragili prima di oltrepassare i controlli e avvicinarsi al gate. Li ritroverete a destinazione : a volte sul nastro insieme ai bagagli, a volte al banco degli ingombranti/fragili.

Noi abbiamo portato i due seggiolini auto delle nostre BimbeInViaggio  per non doverli affittare a destinazione, dato il costo quasi proibitivo. E’ stato facilissimo e davvero comodo.

Seggiolini auto o rialzi per bambini a bordo?

È possibile portare a bordo un seggiolino per auto alla sola condizione che sia approvato per l’utilizzo in aereo e disponga di un’imbracatura con attacco a 5 punti.

Inoltre portando a bordo ed usando il seggiolino auto per un bambino di eta’ inferiore a 2 anni, sara’ necessario acquistare un posto separato per il bambino.

Check-in e posti per bambini con Ryanair

Veniamo ora alla questione check-in ed assegnazione dei posti.

Quando si prenota un volo Ryanair per un bambino , il posto a sedere va obbligatoriamente scelto all’atto della prenotazione . Ed anche per l’adulto accompagnatore vige la stessa regola. In questo caso, la pre-assegnazione dei posti è gratuita .

Ricordate però che in una famiglia di 4 persone , due adulti e due bambini, solo un adulto sarà l’accompagnatore mentre il secondo dovrà acquistare il posto a sedere se la prenotazione viene fatta per tutti e quattro insieme. Altrimenti si può decidere di acquistare i biglietti separatamente : un adulto più due bambini e poi un solo adulto. I primi tre avranno un posto assegnato fin da subito, mentre il secondo adulto avrà l’assegnazione del posto random al momento del check-in. Perciò in questo caso potreste ritrovarvi a non essere seduti vicini. 

Per quanto riguarda il check-in con Ryanair: avendo i posti già assegnati poichè si viaggia con dei bambini, è possibile effettuare il check-in fin da due mesi prima della data del volo. 

Vi ricordo inoltre che in fase di check-in è ancora possibile aggiungere servizi accessori come un bagaglio da stiva o la priorità di cui ho parlato.

La nostra esperienza a bordo di Ryanair

Avevo paura . Sì, esatto, avete letto bene: ho proprio scritto paura. Prima di partire per Cipro mi sono pentita più e più volte di aver prenotato un volo Ryanair .

Avevo il terrore che qualcosa andasse storto , ma soprattutto che ci cancellassero il volo. Tra l’altro proprio per questo motivo, avevo stipulato un’ assicurazione completa .

Poi mi sono detta: “Sono andata in Madagascar con una bimba di un anno e mezzo. Un volo di poco più di tre ore anche che sia con Ryanair non può essere un qualcosa di inaffrontabile.”

Ed infatti è andato tutto per il meglio : nessun problema a bordo, nessun ritardo (anche se questa è questione di fortuna) e nessun problema al passeggino e seggiolini imbarcati, che abbiamo ritrovato a destinazione.

E per finire…

Vi lascio qualche idea su  cosa mettere nel bagaglio a mano di un bambino e come affrontare un volo aereo con un bambino.

Sono un addetto alla sicurezza aeroportuale. Non è vero che non si possono portare bottiglie d’acqua o latte come è stato scritto nell’articolo… è vero proprio il contrario: per i bimbi fino a 12 anni si possono portare a bordo liquidi ben oltre i 100 ml previsti per ogni contenitore. Il quantitativo dei liquidi necessari all’alimentazione dei bimbi è considerato quello necessario per tutta la durata del viaggio. La regola dei 100 ml per ciascun contenitore ed 1 litro totale vale solo per gli adulti.

Buongiorno Andrea, viaggio personalmente con due bimbe di 7 e 4 anni che hanno preso il loro primo volo a 1 anno e 4 anni. In Italia ci è stato permesso portare una bottiglietta con dell’acqua per il volo, ma all’estero proprio no. Il biberon con acqua dentro ci è stato fatto svuotare sia a Mauritius che a Londra Gatwich. Addirittura, in quest’ultimo aeroporto, mi hanno fatto buttare via un omogenizzato di frutta, di quelli da bere per capirsi, perchè era di 110ml e non 100ml. A questo punto andrebbe approfondito se in Italia si è più permissivi rispetto alle leggi internazionali

Buongiorno, Le confermo che entrambe i bambini possono portare gratuitamente il passeggino ed anche un secondo dispositivo come un passeggino o un lettino da campeggio . Quando noi abbiamo volato con Ryanair abbiamo infattiportato i seggiolini auto per entrambe le bambine e avevano 3 e 6 anni

Ciao, noi non li abbiamo mai messi in appositi contenitori né avvolti in pluriball. Fortunatamente ci sono sempre arrivati sani e salvi con Ryanair. Se così non fosse, all’aeroporto in arrivo, rivolgetevi subito al punto reclami (quello dove ci si rivolge anche per i bagagli smarriti) e fate subito denuncia: avrete diritto ad un rimborso oppure alla sostituzione del passeggino, così come accade per le valige.

Buongiorno, mi dispiace ma non siamo il servizio assistenza di ryanair, perciò le suggerisco di contattare direttamente il call center o comunque di contattare ryanair direttamente per poter prenotare il suo volo. Posso dirle che l’assegnazione dei posti, se non acquistati, è random, perciò il neonato o comunque il bambino deve essere accompagnato da un solo adulto, il secondo adulto non è detto che sieda vicino (sempre se non si paga il posto e dunque si sceglie esattamente ciò che si vuole).

Here you find everything you need to know about luggage when you fly with Ryan Air. Ryan Air the leading low cost airline in western Europe and has great ambitions in Central and Eastern Europe as well.

Ryanair luggage allowance at a glance:

Separately, you can carry bicycles (60-70 Euros), large sports equipment (50-60 Euros), other sports equipment (30-35 Euros), ski equipment (40-45 Euros), golf clubs 30-35 Euro) and musical instruments (50-60 Euro). Ryanair will not allow pets to fly in the aircraft, even is they are transported in a cage (with the exception of medically certified cases but these will have to be applied for and approved in advance).

Find below, in detail, all the luggage information when traveling with RyanAir.

As of November 1st, 2018, Ryanair passengers (we are referring to non priority passengers) are only allowed to bring in the cabin a single piece of hand luggage / bag that fits the maximum size 40x20x25 cm (it doesn't matter if the 25cm is the width or height but will need to fit undeseat). This one small cabin baggage can be either a small duffel bag or backpack. Any personal item must be placed in this bag and is not allowed separately on board as a rule. This is the only bag you can carry with you for the duration of the flight.

However, priority passengers are allowed to bring a second piece of large cabin luggage, up to 55x40x20 cm and 10kg weight limit (usually a standard trolley case that  will fit in the overhead luggage compartment). The old luggage policy which allowed for 2 cabin bags is no longer valid.

Watchout for hand luggage dimensions: RyanAir operates by a strict policy and will promptly charge 50 Euro for each baggage that will not fit the sizer placed at the boarding gate, exceeding the allowed dimensions.

Ryanair Checked Baggage

The checked or hold baggage - the one you hand over to the airline to be placed in the air carrier - is shipped for a fee. Prices vary depending on the travel period, between 8 and 60 Euro per bag and per flight segment. This means that for a return flight you will pay the tax twice and if you have a connection flight, you will pay for each separate flight segment.

We recommend buying the online luggage transport service, preferably together with airline tickets, as they are cheaper this way. If you buy your luggage at the airport check in desk or by phone, the rates will be significantly higher, with approx. 5-10 Euro per each baggage.

The size of the Ryanair luggage is not limited, which allows you to travel even with a XXL trolley case. The maximum accepted suitcase weight is 20kg but 10kg and 15kg are significantly cheaper. Ryanair does not limit the number of pieces of checked luggage up to 20 kilo per each passenger, so theoretically it is unlimited. It is important to remember that the weight of a luggage is strictly applied to each separate piece and can not be cumulated on several pieces or on several passengers.

What can you bring aboard Ryanair into your hand baggage?

Ryanair recommends that you store in your hand bag all fragile electronics such as laptop, tablet and more to have them near and protect them from possible damage.

Liquids should be transported in containers of up to 100ml, placed in a single 1 liter resilient transparent bag. The notion of liquid includes: water, beverages, soups, syrups, creams, oils, lotions, perfumes, sprays, foams, gels, pastes (including toothpaste), mascara and any other toiletries. Better leave these in your home bathroom locker or carry a special liquiqs kit.

Liquids, sprays, gels, etc. purchased from duty-free shops in the airport or in the airplane must be packed in a secured and sealed bag and the products together with the receipt must remain inside the bag during the journey.

Medicines and baby food are pre-made in your hand baggage, but it is possible for some medications to have to read the prescription from your doctor.

It is strictly prohibited to carry your Ryanair hand luggage:

• Compressed air or CO2 weapons, firearms and other equipment capable or apparently capable of launching projectiles and causing injury to persons, including: firearms of any kind, toy weapons including replicas that may be passed as real, any components except for rifles, CO2 or compressed air guns, signaling or starting guns, sporting competitions, springs, crossbows or arrows, harpoons or underwater weapons, swords or catapults of any kind.
• Equipment designed to paralyze or immobilize, including: electroshocks, spraying gas, irritant or pepper spray or animal spray.
• Any sharp-pointed or sharp-edged objects capable of being used to injure a person, including "knives, quilts, daggers, axes, torso, ice breakers, razor blades, cutters, scissors, sharpened martial arts equipment or with sharp edges, swords or swords of any kind.
• Work equipment and tools including: wounds, drills and spirals, including battery-operated drilling machines, tools that can be used including guns, screwdrivers or chisels, saws and cutting machines including portable ones, torches and gas lamps, pistols and Nail and Snap /
• Bustling instruments and items such as baseball balls, sticks and self defense sticks, martial arts equipment

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

The Kings season ended again Wednesday with a whimper not a bang.

It ended again in the first round of the NHL playoffs and again in a loss to the Edmonton Oilers, who have become for the Kings what kryptonite was for Superman.

The final score of the final game was 4-3 , but that was just a bookkeeping detail because the series was over long before the final horn sounded. The Oilers outscored the Kings 22-13 in the five games, with nine of those goals coming in 19 chances on the power play. They didn’t concede a goal on the Kings’ 12 power-play opportunities.

Four Oilers — Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Evan Bouchard and Zach Hyman — finished the series with at least eight points, twice as many as the Kings’ co-leaders, Quinton Byfield and Adrian Kempe. As beatdowns go, this one was about as one-sided as the Kings-Oilers playoff history has been in general.

For third year in a row, Kings’ season ended by Edmonton

The Edmonton Oilers eliminate the Kings from the playoffs once again, this time beating them in five games.

Yet for Kings defenseman Drew Doughty, it really didn’t matter what color the other uniform was. What matters is the Kings are out of the playoffs after one round.

“The whole point, I think, is that we lost three years in a row in the first round,” he said. “Yeah, it was against Edmonton. But no matter who we lost to, it would have been the same amount of disappointment, same amount of wanting to win the series.”

And a third straight loss in the first round of the playoffs will undoubtedly lead to some offseason soul-searching for the Kings. Did interim coach Jim Hiller show enough in getting the team to the playoffs for general manager Rob Blake to remove the interim tag and give Hiller the permanent job? Will that even be Blake’s decision to make?

In Blake’s seven seasons in charge the Kings have made the playoffs four times, but never advanced beyond the opening round. When Blake fired coach Todd McLellan in February, he said a new voice was needed in the dressing room. Could the same now be true in the front office?

Plus the Kings have seven players who became unrestricted free agents after Wednesday’s loss, among them defenseman Matt Roy, forward Trevor Lewis and goaltenders Cam Talbot and David Rittich. They will all need to be re-signed or replaced.

And finally the team will have to decide what to do with center Pierre-Luc Dubois, who signed an eight-year, $68-million contract with the team in June, becoming the second-highest player on the team. For that the Kings got just 16 goals and 24 assists; Dubois was skating on the fourth line Wednesday, taking a questionable penalty that led to Edmonton’s third goal.

The general manager of the Kings knows the team must turn it around under interim coach Jim Hiller or his job could be on the line.

Asked whether he wanted the job permanently, a clearly deflated Hiller perked up.

“That goes without saying,” he said. “You know, it’s a great group of players with with a lot of character. They made it easy for me in what was maybe difficult circumstances for them. So I owe a lot to them. I enjoyed it.”

But change must come if the Kings are to ever get to the second round again.

Asked in the quiet Kings’ locker room if the Kings’ roster is good enough to win the playoffs, Doughty was direct.

“We haven’t proven that yet. I’m not going to say no. But that’s a tough question,” he said. “We haven’t proved that. That’s the bottom line.”

Asked if there’s a next step in the team’s evolution, he continued with the same theme.

“Obviously win a playoff round. That was our goal this year,” he said. “Work hard in the offseason again and come back stronger and you know, use this experience, these past experiences, as motivation and try to win a series.”

“I’m not going to tell you what I think is missing,” he continued. “It comes down to we all need to chip in a playoff series and we had guys on some nights, some guys off other nights. And we all need to be on. Nothing great. We all need to be really solid and consistent to win a playoff series and I think that’s where we lost.”

The Kings haven’t beaten anyone in a first-round playoff series since 2014, when they won the second of their two Stanley Cups . But it’s the Oilers who have become the perennial postseason roadblock, beating the Kings in the first round in each of the last three seasons.

The teams have met in the postseason 10 times since 1982 and Edmonton has won eight of those series. Only two other teams in the NHL have beaten the same playoff opponent more often over that span.

And while you can chalk some of the Kings’ struggles up to bad luck and some to chance, dominance of this degree seems inexplicable without a curse. So maybe it’s all Wayne Gretzky’s fault.

Hey, it’s a theory. (And it’s not any worse than some of those offered by the Kings players Wednesday.)

Gretzky was far more than an icon in Canada, he was a national treasure who had led the Oilers to four Stanley Cups in five seasons when he was dealt to the Kings in the summer of 1988. In hockey-mad Edmonton, the trade wasn’t so much a trade as it was a betrayal.

But Oilers owner Peter Pocklington, whose other business ventures were struggling, needed cash and the Kings offered him $15 million of it in the Gretzky deal. In that way the trade was reminiscent of Babe Ruth’s sale from the Red Sox to the Yankees in 1920, one Boston owner Harry Frazee made to prop up his failing theater interests.

After the trade the Red Sox would go 83 seasons without a World Series title while the Yankees would win a record 26 championships.

If the Gretzky Curse does indeed exist, it hasn’t been nearly as harsh as the Curse of the Bambino, but it has haunted both teams. Plus it needed a couple of seasons to take effect.

In Gretzky’s first season in Los Angeles, the Kings beat the Oilers in the playoffs en route to the division finals; a year later the Oilers, sans Gretzky, would win their fifth Stanley Cup in seven seasons.

Neither of those things have happened again.

The Kings have lost six straight playoff series to the Oilers while Edmonton has gone 33 years without an NHL championship. The entire country of Canada, in fact, has won just two Stanley Cups since Gretzky left for Hollywood.

And while the Kings won NHL titles in 2012 and 2014, their path forward was made easier because the Oilers missed the playoffs both times, part of a 10-season playoff drought fans still refer to as “The Decade of Darkness.”

The Oilers may finally be ready to step back into the light, curses be damned. In McDavid and Draisaitl, Edmonton has three of the last four Hart Trophy winners, and this year the supporting cast around them is better than it’s ever been. The team seems primed for a long playoff run.

The Kings, meanwhile, are looking at another long offseason searching for answers. Could they be cursed?

“I don’t know what to think. It’s too fresh,” forward Phillip Danault said. “But it definitely hurts.”
